This work develops a novel set of algorithms, alternating Gradient Descent (GD) and minimization for MRI (altGDmin-MRI1 and altGDmin-MRI2), for accelerated dynamic MRI by assuming an approximate low-rank (LR) model on the matrix formed by the vectorized images of the sequence. The LR model itself is well-known in the MRI literature; our contribution is the novel GD-based algorithms which are much faster, memory efficient, and general compared with existing work; and careful use of a 3-level hierarchical LR model. By general, we mean that, with a single choice of parameters, our method provides accurate reconstructions for multiple accelerated dynamic MRI applications, multiple sampling rates and sampling schemes. We show that our methods outperform many of the popular existing approaches while also being faster than all of them, on average. This claim is based on comparisons on 8 different retrospectively under sampled multi-coil dynamic MRI applications, sampled using either 1D Cartesian or 2D pseudo radial under sampling, at multiple sampling rates. Evaluations on some prospectively under sampled datasets are also provided. Our second contribution is a mini-batch subspace tracking extension that can process new measurements and return reconstructions within a short delay after they arrive. Purpose: Task-based assessment of image quality in undersampled magnetic resonance imaging provides a way of evaluating the impact of regularization on task performance. In this work, we evaluated the effect of total variation (TV) and wavelet regularization on human detection of signals with a varying background and validated a model observer in predicting human performance. Approach: Human observer studies used two-alternative forced choice (2-AFC) trials with a small signal known exactly task but with varying backgrounds for fluid-attenuated inversion recovery images reconstructed from undersampled multi-coil data. We used a 3.48 undersampling factor with TV and a wavelet sparsity constraints. The sparse difference-of-Gaussians (S-DOG) observer with internal noise was used to model human observer detection. Results: We observed a trend that the human observer detection performance remained fairly constant for a broad range of values in the regularization parameter before decreasing at large values. A similar result was found for the normalized ensemble root mean squared error. Without changing the internal noise, the model observer tracked the performance of the human observers as the regularization was increased but overestimated the PC for large amounts of regularization for TV and wavelet sparsity, as well as the combination of both parameters. Conclusions: For the task we studied, the S-DOG observer was able to reasonably predict human performance with both TV and wavelet sparsity regularizers over a broad range of regularization parameters. We observed a trend that task performance remained fairly constant for a range of regularization parameters before decreasing for large amounts of regularization.

This work proposes a self-navigated variable density spiral(VDS) based manifold regularization scheme to prospectively improve dynamic speech MRI at 3T. Short readout 1.3ms spirals were used to minimize off-resonance. A custom 16-channel speech coil was used for improved parallel imaging of vocal tract. The manifold model leveraged similarities between frames sharing similar speech postures without explicit motion binning. The self-navigating capability of VDS was leveraged to learn the Laplacian matrix of the manifold. Reconstruction was posed as a SENSE-based non-local soft weighted temporal regularization scheme. Our approach was compared against view-sharing, low-rank, finite difference, extra-dimension-based sparsity reconstruction constraints. Under-sampling experiments were conducted on five volunteers performing repetitive and arbitrary speaking tasks at different speaking rates. Quantitative evaluation in terms of mean square error over moving edges were performed in a retrospectively under-sampled data. For prospective under-sampling, blinded image quality evaluation in the categories of alias artifacts, spatial blurring, and temporal blurring were performed by three voice research experts. Region of interest analysis at articulator boundaries were performed to assess articulatory motion. Our scheme provided improved reconstruction over the others. With prospective under-sampling, a spatial resolution of 2.4mm2/pixel and a temporal resolution of 17.4 ms/frame for single slice imaging, and 52.2 ms/frame for 3-slice imaging were achieved. We demonstrated implicit motion binning by analyzing the mechanics of the Laplacian matrix. Our method demonstrated superior image quality scores in reducing spatial and temporal blurring. While it exhibited faint alias artifacts similar to temporal finite-difference, it provided statistically significant improvements over remaining constraints., Comment: 32 pages, 10 figures

This work develops a fast, memory-efficient, and general algorithm for accelerated/undersampled dynamic MRI by assuming an approximate LR model on the matrix formed by the vectorized images of the sequence. By general, we mean that our algorithm can be used for multiple accelerated dynamic MRI applications and multiple sampling rates (acceleration rates) and patterns with a single choice of parameters (no parameter tuning). Real-time magnetic resonance imaging (RT-MRI) of human speech production is enabling significant advances in speech science, linguistics, bio-inspired speech technology development, and clinical applications. Easy access to RT-MRI is however limited, and comprehensive datasets with broad access are needed to catalyze research across numerous domains. The imaging of the rapidly moving articulators and dynamic airway shaping during speech demands high spatio-temporal resolution and robust reconstruction methods. Further, while reconstructed images have been published, to-date there is no open dataset providing raw multi-coil RT-MRI data from an optimized speech production experimental setup. Such datasets could enable new and improved methods for dynamic image reconstruction, artifact correction, feature extraction, and direct extraction of linguistically-relevant biomarkers. The present dataset offers a unique corpus of 2D sagittal-view RT-MRI videos along with synchronized audio for 75 subjects performing linguistically motivated speech tasks, alongside the corresponding first-ever public domain raw RT-MRI data. Purpose: To apply tracer kinetic models as temporal constraints during reconstruction of under-sampled dynamic contrast enhanced (DCE) MRI. Methods: A library of concentration v.s time profiles is simulated for a range of physiological kinetic parameters. The library is reduced to a dictionary of temporal bases, where each profile is approximated by a sparse linear combination of the bases. Image reconstruction is formulated as estimation of concentration profiles and sparse model coefficients with a fixed sparsity level. Simulations are performed to evaluate modeling error, and error statistics in kinetic parameter estimation in presence of noise. Retrospective under-sampling experiments are performed on a brain tumor DCE digital reference object (DRO) at different signal to noise levels (SNR=20-40) at (k-t) space under-sampling factor (R=20), and 12 brain tumor in- vivo 3T datasets at (R=20-40). The approach is compared against an existing compressed sensing based temporal finite-difference (tFD) reconstruction approach. Results: Simulations demonstrate that sparsity levels of 2 and 3 model the library profiles from the Patlak and extended Tofts-Kety (ETK) models, respectively. Noise sensitivity analysis showed equivalent kinetic parameter estimation error statistics from noisy concentration profiles, and model approximated profiles. DRO based experiments showed good fidelity in recovery of kinetic maps from 20-fold under- sampled data at SNRs between 10-30. In-vivo experiments demonstrated reduced bias and uncertainty in kinetic mapping with the proposed approach compared to tFD at R>=20. Conclusions: Tracer kinetic models can be applied as temporal constraints during DCE-MRI reconstruction, enabling more accurate reconstruction from under- sampled data. We propose a novel deformation corrected compressed sensing (DC-CS) framework to recover dynamic magnetic resonance images from undersampled measurements. We introduce a generalized formulation that is capable of handling a wide class of sparsity/compactness priors on the deformation corrected dynamic signal. In this work, we consider example compactness priors such as sparsity in temporal Fourier domain, sparsity in temporal finite difference domain, and nuclear norm penalty to exploit low rank structure. Using variable splitting, we decouple the complex optimization problem to simpler and well understood sub problems; the resulting algorithm alternates between simple steps of shrinkage based denoising, deformable registration, and a quadratic optimization step. Additionally, we employ efficient continuation strategies to minimize the risk of convergence to local minima. The proposed formulation contrasts with existing DC-CS schemes that are customized for free breathing cardiac cine applications, and other schemes that rely on fully sampled reference frames or navigator signals to estimate the deformation parameters. The efficient decoupling enabled by the proposed scheme allows its application to a wide range of applications including contrast enhanced dynamic MRI. Through experiments on numerical phantom and in vivo myocardial perfusion MRI datasets, we demonstrate the utility of the proposed DC-CS scheme in providing robust reconstructions with reduced motion artifacts over classical compressed sensing schemes that utilize the compact priors on the original deformation un-corrected signal.
