Search

The mechanism that controls the superconducting (SC) transition temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}^{0}$ as a function of doping is one of the central questions in cuprate high-temperature superconductors. While it is generally accepted that $T_{\mathrm{c}}^{0}$ in underdoped cuprates is not determined by the scale of pairing but by the onset of global phase coherence, the role of phase fluctuations in the overdoped region has been controversial. Here, our transport measurements in perpendicular magnetic fields ($H$) on underdoped Bi-2201 reveal immeasurably small Hall response for $T>T_{\mathrm{c}}(H)$ as a signature of SC phase with vortexlike phase fluctuations. We find that the extent of such a regime in $T$ and $H$ is suppressed near optimal doping but becomes strongly enhanced in heavily overdoped Bi-2201. Our results thus show that vortexlike phase fluctuations play an important role in the field-tuned SC transition in the heavily overdoped region, in contrast to conventional mean-field Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer description. The electric dipole strength distribution in $^{58}$Ni between 6 and 20 MeV has been determined from proton inelastic scattering experiments at very forward angles at RCNP, Osaka. The experimental data are rather well reproduced by quasiparticle random-phase approximation calculations including vibration coupling, despite a mild dependence on the adopted Skyrme interaction. They allow an estimate of the experimentally inaccessible high-energy contribution above 20 MeV, leading to an electric dipole polarizability $\alpha_\mathrm{D}(^{58}{\rm Ni}) = 3.48(31)$ fm$^3$. This serves as a test case for recent extensions of coupled-cluster calculations with chiral effective field theory interactions to nuclei with two nucleons on top of a closed-shell system., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Vortex matter in layered high-$T_c$ superconductors, including iron-pnictides, undergo several thermodynamic phase transitions due to the complex interplay of pinning energy, thermal energy and elastic energy. Moreover, the presence of anisotropy makes their vortex physics even more intriguing. Here, we report a detailed vortex dynamics study, using dc magnetization measurements, in a triclinic iron-pnictide superconductor (Ca$_{0.85}$La$_{0.15}$)$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$)(Fe$_2$As$_2$)$_5$, with a superconducting transition temperature, T$_c$ $\sim$ 31 K. A second magnetization peak (SMP) feature is observed for magnetic field perpendicular ($H$$\parallel$$c$) and parallel ($H$$\parallel$$ab$) to the crystal plane. However, its fundamental origin is quite different in both directions. For $H$$\parallel$$c$, the SMP can be well explained using an elastic-to-plastic vortex creep crossover, using collective creep theory. In addition, a possible rhombic-to-square vortex lattice phase transition is also observed for fields in between the onset-field and peak-field related to the SMP. On the other hand, for $H$$\parallel$$ab$, a clear signature of an order-disorder vortex phase transition is observed in the isothermal $M$($H$) measurements at $T$ $\geq$ 6 K. The disordered phase exhibits the characteristics of entangled pinned vortex-liquid. We construct a comprehensive vortex phase diagram by displaying characteristic temperatures and magnetic fields for both crystal geometries in this unique superconducting compound. We studied the in-plane angular magnetoresistance (AMR), in the normal state, of underdoped superconducting Sr1-xLaxCuO2 , which has the simplest crystal structure among cuprates. The measurements of two underdoped thin films with different dopings were performed in intense magnetic field H (up to 22 T). The longitudinal magnetoresistance at temperature T is negative and scales with H/T. For both samples, the AMR is anisotropic and shows an unexpected dependence on H intensity. While at the low magnetic field, one observes essentially twofold AMR oscillations for the more doped sample, fourfold ones start to grow under the high magnetic field, resulting in the coexistence of the two. For the less doped film at the low magnetic field, both twofold and fourfold AMR components exist. With the increase of the magnetic field, the fourfold component survives a pi/4 phase shift, during which its amplitude vanishes, at a magnetic field Hc such as: 16 T < Hc < 17 T. As a result, at the high magnetic field above Hc, the angular dependence of the in-plane magnetoresistance turns out to be the same for both samples. We tentatively ascribe the above features to the presence of anti-ferromagnetism in the CuO2 planes of underdoped Sr1-xLaxCuO2., Comment: 9 pages 5 figures

The transport properties, resistance, Hall effect, and low T magnetoresistance for very oxygen overdoped nonsuperconducting Bi2Sr2CuO6+d (Bi2201) thin films are reported. From 20 to 300K, the temperature dependence of the resistance is well described by a law of the form a+bT4/3, theoretically predicted to occur in the presence of ferromagnetic fluctuations. In addition, this prediction is reinforced by the analysis of the transverse and the longitudinal low T magnetoresistance. Interestingly, the presence of a weak disorder causing low T electronic localization allows us to evidence very short diffusion lengths, as observed in other systems with ferromagnetic fluctuations., Comment: 8 pages 8 figures

"Why is the EoS for tin so soft?" is a longstanding question, which prevents us from determining the nuclear incompressibility $K_\infty$ accurately. To solve this puzzle, a fully self-consistent quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) plus quasiparticle-vibration coupling (QPVC) approach based on Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov is developed. We show that the many-body correlations introduced by QPVC, which shift the ISGMR energy in Sn isotopes by about 0.4 MeV more than the energy in $^{208}$Pb, play a crucial role in providing a unified description of the ISGMR in Sn and Pb isotopes. The best description of the experimental strength functions is given by SV-K226 and KDE0, which are characterized by incompressibility values $K_\infty=$ 226 MeV and 229 MeV, respectively, at mean field level.

The perfectly linear temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity observed as $T \rightarrow$ 0 in a variety of metals close to a quantum critical point is a major puzzle of condensed matter physics . Here we show that $T$-linear resistivity as $T \rightarrow$ 0 is a generic property of cuprates, associated with a universal scattering rate. We measured the low-temperature resistivity of the bi-layer cuprate Bi2212 and found that it exhibits a $T$-linear dependence with the same slope as in the single-layer cuprates Bi2201, Nd-LSCO and LSCO, despite their very different Fermi surfaces and structural, superconducting and magnetic properties. We then show that the $T$-linear coefficient (per CuO$_2$ plane), $A_1$, is given by the universal relation $A_1 T_F = h / 2e^2$, where $e$ is the electron charge, $h$ is the Planck constant and $T_F$ is the Fermi temperature. This relation, obtained by assuming that the scattering rate 1 / $\tau$ of charge carriers reaches the Planckian limit whereby $\hbar / \tau = k_B T$, works not only for hole-doped cuprates but also for electron-doped cuprates despite the different nature of their quantum critical point and strength of their electron correlations., Comment: main + SI

Oxygen was electrochemically intercalated into Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ sintered samples, single crystals and a thin film. We estimate the diffusion length to a few $\mu$m and the concentration of the intercalated oxygen to $\delta$ $\simeq$ 0.01. The latter is thus much smaller than for the cuprate and nickelate parent compounds, for which $\delta$ $>$ 0.1 is obtained, which could be a consequence of larger steric effects. The influence of the oxygen doping state on resistivity is small, indicating also a poor charge transfer to the conduction band. It is shown that electrochemical intercalation of oxygen may also contribute to doping, when gating thin films with ionic liquid in the presence of water.

We report on the synthesis of perovskite SrIrO3 thin films using sputtering technique. Single phase (110) oriented SrIrO$_3$ thin films were epitaxially grown on SrTiO3 (001) substrate. Using off-axis XRD $\theta-2\theta$ scans, we demonstrate that these films exhibit (110) out-of-plane orientation with (001) and (1-10) lying in-plane. The sputtering grown thin films have a smooth, homogeneous surface, and excellent coherent interface with the substrate., Comment: Corrected the peaks permutation in Fig. 4

Magneto-transport properties of SrIrO$_3$ thin films epitaxially grown on SrTiO$_3$, using reactive RF sputtering, are investigated. A large anisotropy between the in-plane and the out-of-plane resistivities is found, as well as a signature of the substrate cubic to tetragonal transition. Both observations result from the structural distortion associated to the epitaxial strain. The low-temperature and field dependences of the Hall number are interpreted as due to the contribution of Coulomb interactions to weak localization, evidencing the strong correlations in this material. The introduction of a contribution from magnetic scatters, in the analysis of magnetoconductance in the weakly localized regime, is proposed as an alternative to an anomalously large temperature dependence of the Land\'{e} coefficient.

The loss of single-particle coherence going from the superconducting state to the normal state in underdoped cuprates is a dramatic effect that has yet to be understood. Here, we address this issue by performing angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements in the presence of a transport current. We find that the loss of coherence is associated with the development of an onset in the resistance, in that well before the midpoint of the transition is reached, the sharp peaks in the ARPES spectra are completely suppressed. Since the resistance onset is a signature of phase fluctuations, this implies that the loss of single-particle coherence is connected with the loss of long-range phase coherence., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

We perform time resolved photoelectron spectroscopy measurements of optimally doped $\tn{Bi}_2\tn{Sr}_2\tn{CaCu}_2\tn{O}_{8+\delta}$ (Bi-2212) and $\tn{Bi}_2\tn{Sr}_{2-x}\tn{La}_{x}\tn{Cu}\tn{O}_{6+\delta}$ (Bi-2201). The electrons dynamics show that inelastic scattering by nodal quasiparticles decreases when the temperature is lowered below the critical value of the superconducting phase transition. This drop of electronic dissipation is astonishingly robust and survives to photoexcitation densities much larger than the value sustained by long-range superconductivity. The unconventional behaviour of quasiparticle scattering is ascribed to superconducting correlations extending on a length scale comparable to the inelastic path. Our measurements indicate that strongly driven superconductors enter in a regime without phase coherence but finite pairing amplitude. The latter vanishes near to the critical temperature and has no evident link with the pseudogap observed by Angle Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy (ARPES)., Comment: 7 pages, 5 Figures

We report the crystal growth of a new compound, Yb3Os4Ge13, by using a Bi-flux method. X-ray diffraction measurement shows that it crystallizes in the quasi-skutterudite-type caged structure with a cubic space group of Pm-3n (No. 223). Magnetic measurements reveal almost fully localized Yb f-moments above 120 K. The resistivity exhibits a crossover from metallic to insulating behavior with a logarithmic increase below ~ 40 K. The specific heat coefficient shows a rapid upturn below ~5 K and exceeds 2 J mol-1 K-2 at 2 K. Our experimental analysis and electronic band structure calculations demonstrate that Yb3Os4Ge13 exhibits the Kondo effect due to strong hybridization of the localized Yb f-moments with the p-electrons of the surrounding Ge-cages., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

We show that the newly discovered BiS$_2$-based superconductors may have a dominant triplet pairing component, in addition to a subdominant singlet component arising from the spin-orbital coupling. The pairing respects time-reversal symmetry. The dominant triplet gap causes gap sign changes between the spin-split Fermi pockets. Within a pocket, the gap function respects $d^*_{x^2-y^2}$-wave symmetry, where the star indicates joint spin-lattice rotations. Below the Lifshitz filling level the gap is nodelss and the superconducting state is weak topological. Above the Lifshitz points the gap becomes nodal. The dominant triplet pairing is consistent with the experimental upper critical field exceeding the Pauli limit., Comment: 5 pages, 5 color figures

In order to understand the origin of high-temperature superconductivity in copper oxides, we must understand the normal state from which it emerges. Here, we examine the evolution of the normal state electronic excitations with temperature and carrier concentration in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 using angle-resolved photoemission. In contrast to conventional superconductors, where there is a single temperature scale Tc separating the normal from the superconducting state, the high- temperature superconductors exhibit two additional temperature scales. One is the pseudogap scale T*, below which electronic excitations exhibit an energy gap. The second is the coherence scale Tcoh, below which sharp spectral features appear due to increased lifetime of the excitations. We find that T* and Tcoh are strongly doping dependent and cross each other near optimal doping. Thus the highest superconducting Tc emerges from an unusual normal state that is characterized by coherent excitations with an energy gap., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. Published in Proc. Nat. Acad. High-impedance contacts made on the surface of Sr$_{0.88}$La$_{0.12}$CuO$_2$ superconducting thin films systematically display a zero-bias anomaly. We consider two-level systems (TLS) as the origin of this anomaly. We observe that the contribution of some TLS to the contact resistance is weakened by a magnetic field. We show that this could result from the increase of the TLS relaxation rate in the superconducting state, due to its ability to create pairs of quasiparticles out of the condensate, when located close to the surface of the film.

We report on the spectra of point-contacts made on Sr$_{0.88}$La$_{0.12}$CuO$_2$ thin films. Besides a clear evidence for the superconducting gap, we discuss the origin of specific features, such as resistance peaks at the gap voltage and the occurrence of a two-steps resistance decrease., Comment: New data added

We have used the electric--field effect to modulate the resistivity of the surface of underdoped Sr$_{0.88}$La$_{0.12}$CuO$_{2+x}$ thin films, allowing opposite modifications of the electron and hole density in the CuO$_2$ planes, an original situation with respect to conventional chemical doping in electron-doped materials. When the Hall effect indicates a large contribution of a hole band, the electric--field effect on the normal state resistivity is however dominated by the electrons, and the superconducting transition temperature increases when carriers are transfered from holes to electrons.

Signatures of antiferromagnetism (AF) in the underdoped Ln2-xCexCuO4 (Ln = Nd, Pr,...) family are observed even for doping levels for which superconductivity exists. We have looked for a similar property in a different electron-doped cuprate family, Sr1-xLaxCuO2, which consists of CuO2 planes separated by Sr/La atoms, and is exempt of the possible influence of magnetic rare earth ions. We report in-plane magnetoresistance measurements in the normal state of underdoped, superconducting, c-axis oriented, epitaxial Sr1-xLaxCuO2 thin films. This probe is sensitive to spin arrangement and we find that the in-plane magnetoresistance, which is negative and does not saturate for T, exhibits an angular dependence when measured upon rotating a magnetic field within the CuO2 planes. The analysis reveals a superposition of fourfold and twofold angular oscillations. Both of these increase in amplitude with increasing field and decreasing and appear below a temperature, which gets higher with decreasing doping levels. Our results demonstrate that these magnetoresistance oscillations, also observed for the Ln2-xCexCuO4 (Ln = Nd, Pr,...) family and attributed to an AF signature, are, without ambiguity, a property of CuO2 planes. Besides, these oscillations vary with doping in an unusual way compared to previous results: fourfold oscillations are essentially present in the more underdoped samples while only twofold oscillations are visible in the less underdoped ones. This intriguing observation appears to be a consequence of spin dilution with increasing doping level., Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures

The in-plane penetration depth of Sr$_{0.88}$La$_{0.12}$CuO$_{2+x}$ thin films at various doping obtained from oxygen reduction has been measured, using AC susceptibility measurements. For the higher doping samples, the superfluid density deviates strongly from the s-wave behavior, suggesting, in analogy with other electron-doped cuprates, a contribution from a nodal hole pocket, or a small gap on the Fermi surface such as an anisotropic s-wave order parameter. The low value of the superfluid densities, likely due to a strong doping-induced disorder, places the superconducting transition of our samples in the phase-fluctuation regime.

We use angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy to probe the electronic excitations of the non-superconducting state that exists between the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator at zero doping and the superconducting state at larger dopings in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+\delta}. We find that this state is a nodal liquid whose excitation gap becomes zero only at points in momentum space. Despite exhibiting a resistivity characteristic of an insulator and the absence of coherent quasiparticle peaks, this material has the same gap structure as the d-wave superconductor. We observe a smooth evolution of the spectrum across the insulator-to-superconductor transition, which suggests that high temperature superconductivity emerges when quantum phase coherence is established in a non-superconducting nodal liquid., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

We have conducted a highly precise doping controlled experiment on a thin film of the single layer cuprate Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuOy (x = 0.6), in order to observe the superconducting insulating transition (SIT). Sr2+/La3+ substitution (x = 0.6) allowed us to start from a doping state in the vicinity of the SIT, which was further finely-tuned by varying the oxygen content in very small amounts through a vacuum anneal process. Measurements of the Hall effect at 300K and of the resistance vs. T, R(T), have been performed after each treatment. Approaching the SIT from the metallic side, and with decreasing T, R(T) exhibits a high T metallic behaviour down to a temperature Tmin, followed by a non metallic increase (dR/dT< 0) up to a maximum at Tp before the superconducting transition at Tc. This re-entrant behaviour in R(T), commonly observed in cuprates close to the SIT, is attributed to a phase segregation phenomenon in the presence of strong electronic correlations and inhomogeneities. We present our results extracted from R(T) and Hall effect studies in the region close to the SIT and in the insulating region. We have epitaxially grown c-axis oriented SrxLa1-xCuO2 thin films by rf sputtering on KTaO3 substrates with x = 0.12. The as-grown deposits are insulating and a series of superconducting films with various Tc(R=0) up to 26 K have been obtained by in-situ oxygen reduction. Transport measurements in the ab plane of these samples have been undertaken. We report original results on the temperature dependence of the Hall effect and on the anisotropic magnetoresistance (T > Tc). We discuss the magnitude of upper critical fields and anisotropy, the Hall effect, which presents changes of sign indicative of the existence of two types of carriers, the normal state magnetoresistance, negative in parallel magnetic field, a possible signature of spin scattering. Single phase, c-axis oriented, e-doped, Sr1-xLaxCuO2 thin films were epitaxially grown on KTaO3 and DyScO3 substrates by reactive rf sputtering. As-grown films being insulating due to oxygen excess, oxygen reduction is necessary to observe superconductivity. Two different procedures were employed to reach superconductivity. On one hand an in-situ reduction process was conducted on a series of films deposited on both types of substrates. On the other hand, an ex-situ reduction procedure was performed sequentially on a single film deposited on DyScO3. The study of the influence of oxygen reduction on the structural and electronic properties of the thin films is presented and discussed., Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures, to appear in Physica C

The time-averaged and low--frequency noise transport properties were investigated in the vicinity of the superconductor--insulator transition for a Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_{x}$CuO$_{6+\delta}$ ($x=0.3$) thin film. The results are consistent with a superconductor (metal) embedded in a strong insulator, the latter showing two-dimensional variable range hopping properties. The weak insulator behavior -- if any -- is attributed to the metallic inclusions only.

Angle resolved photoemission on underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 reveals that the magnitude and d-wave anisotropy of the superconducting state energy gap are independent of temperature all the way up to Tc. This lack of T variation of the entire k-dependent gap is in marked contrast to mean field theory. At Tc the point nodes of the d-wave gap abruptly expand into finite length ``Fermi arcs''. This change occurs within the width of the resistive transition, and thus the Fermi arcs are not simply thermally broadened nodes but rather a unique signature of the pseudogap phase., Comment: Accepted by Phys. The resistance noise in a Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O$_{8+\delta}$ thin film is found to increase strongly in the underdoped regime. While the increase of the raw resistance noise with decreasing temperature appears to roughly track the previously reported pseudogap temperature for this material, standard noise analysis rather suggests that the additional noise contribution is driven by the proximity of the superconductor-insulator transition.

We find that peaks in the autocorrelation of angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy data of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ in the superconducting state show dispersive behavior for binding energies smaller than the maximum superconducting energy gap. For higher energies, though, a striking anomalous dispersion is observed that is a consequence of the interaction of the electrons with collective excitations. In contrast, in the pseudogap phase, we only observe dispersionless behavior for the autocorrelation peaks. The in-plane resistivity and Hall coefficient have been measured for the single-layer compound Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CuO$_{6+\delta}$ for the whole range of doping states. The deviation of the Hall coefficient, $R_H$, from a high-temperature linear behavior and the temperature dependence of the Hall angle are both only weakly dependent upon doping, contrasting with Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+\delta}$ and Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCuO$_{8+\delta}$. This is in contradiction with former proposals that the transverse transport detects the formation of incoherent Cooper pairs in the pseudogap state. Conversely, the analysis of the data using a phenomenological angular dependent scattering rate clearly allows to distinguish between underdoped and overdoped states, and we propose that the maximum in $R_H(T)$ simply arises due to the combination of a large isotropic scattering rate and an anisotropic temperature dependent one.

The pseudogap phase in the cuprates is a most unusual state of matter: it is a metal, but its Fermi surface is broken up into disconnected segments known as Fermi arcs. Using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we show that the anisotropy of the pseudogap in momentum space and the resulting arcs depend only on the ratio T/T*(x), where T*(x) is the temperature below which the pseudogap first develops at a given hole doping x. In particular, the arcs collapse linearly with T/T* and extrapolate to zero extent as T goes to 0. This suggests that the T = 0 pseudogap state is a nodal liquid, a strange metallic state whose gapless excitations are located only at points in momentum space, just as in a d-wave superconductor., Comment: to appear, Nature Physics (July 2006)

The in-plane magnetoresistance of an epitaxial Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CuO$_{6+\delta}$ thin film was systematically investigated as a function of doping, above $T_c$. The orbital magnetoconductance is used to extract the crossover field line $H_{c2}^*(T)$ in the fluctuation regime. This field is found in good agreement with the upper critical field obtained from resistivity data below $T_c$, and exhibits a similar upward curvature, thus pointing toward the existence of a critical correlation length. The consequences regarding the nature of the resistive transition are discussed.

We report the observation of a change in Fermi surface topology of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 with doping. By collecting high statistics ARPES data from moderately and highly overdoped samples and dividing the data by the Fermi function, we answer a long standing question about the Fermi surface shape of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 close to the (pi,0) point. For moderately overdoped samples (Tc=80K) we find that both the bonding and antibonding sheets of the Fermi surface are hole-like. However for a doping level corresponding to Tc=55K we find that the antibonding sheet becomes electron-like. This change does not directly affect the critical temperature and therefore the superconductivity. However, since similar observations of the change of the topology of the Fermi surface were observed in LSCO and Bi2Sr2Cu2O6, it appears to be a generic feature of hole-doped superconductors. Because of bilayer splitting, though, this doping value is considerably lower than that for the single layer materials, which again argues that it is unrelated to Tc.

The autocorrelation of angle resolved photoemission data from the high temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d shows distinct peaks in momentum space which disperse with binding energy in the superconducting state, but not in the pseudogap phase. Although it is tempting to attribute a non-dispersive behavior in momentum space to some ordering phenomenon, a de-construction of the autocorrelation reveals that the non-dispersive peaks arise not from ordering, but rather from the tips of the Fermi arcs, which themselves do not change with binding energy., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

The current dependence of the excess conductivity is measured up to $\simeq 3 T_c$ for a Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CuO$_{6+\delta}$ thin film, as a function of doping. It is found to be anomalously sensitive to the transport current and to behave as a universal function of $T/T_c$ in the whole doping range. We discuss these results in the perspective of a granular superconductor with a gapless-like behavior.

We have studied the evolution of the structural modulation in epitaxial, c-axis oriented, Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+d thin films when varying the La content x and for a given x as a function of oxygen content. A series of thin films with 00.2. Such study is important to understand the electronical properties of Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+d thin films., Comment: 25 pages with 10 figures, accepted for publication in Phys.Rev.B

We examine the momentum and energy dependence of the scattering rate of the high temperature cuprate superconductors using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The scattering rate is of the form a + bw around the Fermi surface for under and optimal doping. The inelastic coefficient "b" is found to be isotropic. The elastic term, "a", however, is found to be highly anisotropic for under and optimally doped samples, with an anisotropy which correlates with that of the pseudogap. This is contrasted with heavily overdoped samples, which show an isotropic scattering rate and an absence of the pseudogap above T_c. We find this to be a generic property for both single and double layer compounds., Comment: Extended version of cond-mat/0404385

The in-plane infrared and visible (3 meV-3 eV) reflectivity of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (Bi-2212) thin films is measured between 300 K and 10 K for different doping levels with unprecedented accuracy. The optical conductivity is derived through an accurate fitting procedure. We study the transfer of spectral weight from finite energy into the superfluid as the system becomes superconducting. In the over-doped regime, the superfluid develops at the expense of states lying below 60 meV, a conventional energy of the order of a few times the superconducting gap. In the underdoped regime, spectral weight is removed from up to 2 eV, far beyond any conventional scale. The intraband spectral weight change between the normal and superconducting state, if analyzed in terms of a change of kinetic energy is ~1 meV. Although initially quite controversial, it has been widely accepted that the Cooper pairs in optimally doped cuprate superconductors have predominantly dx2-y2 wavefunction symmetry. The controversy has now shifted to whether the high-Tc pairing symmetry changes away from optimal doping. Here we present phase-sensitive tricrystal experiments on three cuprate systems: Y0.7Ca0.3Ba2Cu3O7-x (Ca-doped Y-123), La2-xSrxCuO4 (La-214) and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (Bi-2212),with doping levels covering the underdoped, optimal and overdoped regions. Our work implies that time-reversal invariant, predominantly dx2-y2 pairing symmetry is robust over a large variation in doping, and underscores the important role of on-site Coulomb repulsion in the making of high-temperature superconductivity., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

One of the interesting features of the photoemission spectra of the high temperature cuprate superconductors is the presence of a large signal (referred to as the "background'') in the unoccupied region of the Brillouin zone. Here we present data indicating that the origin of this signal is extrinsic and is most likely due to strong scattering of the photoelectrons. We also present an analytical method that can be used to subtract the background signal.

The suppression of excess conductivity with electric field is studied for Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_{n-1}$Cu$_n$O$_{2n+4+x}$ ($n$ = 1, 2) thin films. A pulse-probe technique is used, which allows for an estimate of the sample temperature. The characteristic electric field for fluctuations suppression is found well below the expected value for all samples. For the $n=1$ material, a scaling of the excess conductivity with electric field and temperature is obtained, similar to the scaling under strong magnetic field.

In a recent comment [1], Armitage and Hu have suggested that our experiment observing dichroism in angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) [2] could not be conclusively interpreted as arising from time reversal symmetry breaking, arguing that our observations are likely due to structural effects. The concerns expressed by Armitage and Hu that our results could be due to a change in the mirror plane are as important as they are obvious. In fact the first part of their comment merely restates the results of Simon and Varma [3] about the relationship and contrast of effects due to time reversal symmetry breaking and those caused by crystallographic changes. In any test of time reversal symmetry one must ensure that parity alone is not inducing the observed changes. We have indeed considered this issue very carefully in the course of our study [2] and it is precisely the lack of temperature dependent structural changes significant enough to explain the magnitude of the observed dichroism that forced us to conclude that time reversal symmetry breaking is the only plausible explanation. Furthermore, recent experiments by Borisenko, et al. [4] confirm that changes in the mirror plane are unmeasurably small.

We have measured the dynamics of individual magnetic fluxoids entering and leaving photolithographically patterned thin film rings of the underdoped high-temperature superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$, using a variable sample temperature scanning SQUID microscope. We present a comparative study of Nernst effect and resistivity in underdoped samples of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CuO$_{6+\delta}$ and La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$. The Nernst effect presents a peak in a region of the H-T diagram where resistivity shows a non-metallic temperature dependence. Our results illustrate that the mechanism of dissipation in the mixed state of underdoped cuprates is poorly understood. Large quantum superconducting fluctuations and vanishing vortex viscosity are among suggested explanations for an enhanced Nernst signal close to the superconductor-insulator boundary., Comment: 5 pages including 3 figures

We have studied the evolution of the thermoelectric power S(T) with oxygen doping of single-layered Bi2Sr2CuO6+d thin films and ceramics in the overall superconducting (Tc, S290K) phase diagram. While the universal relation between the room-temperature thermopower S290K and the critical temperature is found to hold in the strongly overdoped region (d>0.14), a strong violation is observed in the underdoped part of the phase diagram. The observed behaviour is compared with other cuprates and the different scenarios are discussed., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The in-plane optical conductivity of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d thin films with small carrier density (underdoped) up to large carrier density (overdoped) is analyzed with unprecedented accuracy. Integrating the conductivity up to increasingly higher energies points to the energy scale involved when the superfluid condensate builds up. In the underdoped sample, states extending up to 2 eV contribute to the superfluid. This anomalously large energy scale may be assigned to a change of in-plane kinetic energy at the superconducting transition, and is compatible with an electronic pairing mechanism., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

Temperature and doping dependent tunneling spectroscopy on $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+\delta}$ single crystals has been investigated by using break-junction technique. The results provide direct evidence that the pseudogap persists into heavily overdoped regime, possibly in whole doping range of the superconducting phase. The gap value determined from the peak-to-peak of the conductance, $\Delta_{p-p}$, exhibits a jump-like increase as $T$ is raised across the critical temperature. The magnitude of the jump, the pseudogap opening temperature and superconducting gap decrease with raising doping. The $\Delta_{p-p}$ below $T_c$ can be naturally treated as the vector sum of two competing orders: a BCS-like superconducting gap and a residual pseudogap., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

The ab-plane reflectance of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+d) thin films was measured in the 30-25000 cm^(-1) range for one underdoped (Tc = 70 K), and one overdoped sample (Tc = 63 K) as a function of temperature (10-300 K). We find qualitatively similar behaviors in the temperature dependence of the normal-state infrared response of both samples. Above Tc, the effective spectral weight, obtained from the integrated conductivity, does not decrease when T decreases, so that no opening of an optical pseudogap is seen. We suggest that these are consequences of the pseudogap opening first in the k=(0, pi) direction, according to ARPES, and of the in-plane infrared conductivity being mostly sensitive to the k=(pi, pi) direction., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

Photoemission spectra of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 reveal that the high energy feature near (pi,0), the "hump", scales with the superconducting gap and persists above Tc in the pseudogap phase. As the doping decreases, the dispersion of the hump increasingly reflects the wavevector (pi,pi) characteristic of the undoped insulator, despite the presence of a large Fermi surface. This can be understood from the interaction of the electrons with a collective mode, supported by our observation that the doping dependence of the resonance observed by neutron scattering is the same as that inferred from our data., Comment: 4 pages (revtex), 5 figures (eps)
