Despite the striking advances in recent language generation performance, model-generated responses have suffered from the chronic problem of hallucinations that are either untrue or unfaithful to a given source. Especially in the task of knowledge grounded conversation, the models are required to generate informative responses, but hallucinated utterances lead to miscommunication. In particular, entity-level hallucination that causes critical misinformation and undesirable conversation is one of the major concerns. To address this issue, we propose a post-hoc refinement method called REM. It aims to enhance the quality and faithfulness of hallucinated utterances by refining them based on the source knowledge. If the generated utterance has a low source-faithfulness score with the given knowledge, REM mines the key entities in the knowledge and implicitly uses them for refining the utterances. We verify that our method reduces entity hallucination in the utterance. Also, we show the adaptability and efficacy of REM with extensive experiments and generative results. Minifilament (MF) eruption producing small jets and micro-flares is regarded as an important source for coronal heating and the solar wind transients through studies mostly based on coronal observations in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and X-ray wavelengths. In this study, we focus on the chromospheric plasma diagnostics of a tiny minifilament in quiet Sun located at [71'', 450''] on 2021--08--07 at 19:11 UT observed as part of the ninth encounter of the PSP campaign. Main data obtained are the high cadence, high resolution spectroscopy from the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS) and high-resolution magnetograms from the Near InfraRed Imaging Spectropolarimeter (NIRIS) on the 1.6~m Goode Solar Telescope (GST) at Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO). The mini-filament with size $\sim$1''$\times$5'' and a micro-flare are detected in both the H$\alpha$ line center and SDO/AIA 193, 304~\AA\ images. On the NIRIS magnetogram, we found that the cancellation of a magnetic bipole in the footpoints of the minifilament triggered its eruption in a sigmoidal shape. By inversion of the \ha\ and Ca {\sc ii} spectra under the embedded cloud model, we found a temperature increase of 3,800 K in the brightening region, associated with rising speed average of MF increased by 18~$km~s^{-1}$. This cool plasma is also found in the EUV images. We estimate the kinetic energy change of the rising filament as 1.5$\times$$10^{25}$~ergs, and thermal energy accumulation in the MF, 1.4$\times$$10^{25}$~ergs. From the photospheric magnetograms, we find the magnetic energy change is 1.6$\times$$10^{26}$~ergs across the PIL of converging opposite magnetic elements, which amounts to the energy release in the chromosphere in this smallest two-ribbon flare ever observed.

This work explores the zero-shot adaptation capability of semantic skills, semantically interpretable experts' behavior patterns, in cross-domain settings, where a user input in interleaved multi-modal snippets can prompt a new long-horizon task for different domains. In these cross-domain settings, we present a semantic skill translator framework SemTra which utilizes a set of multi-modal models to extract skills from the snippets, and leverages the reasoning capabilities of a pretrained language model to adapt these extracted skills to the target domain. The framework employs a two-level hierarchy for adaptation: task adaptation and skill adaptation. During task adaptation, seq-to-seq translation by the language model transforms the extracted skills into a semantic skill sequence, which is tailored to fit the cross-domain contexts. Skill adaptation focuses on optimizing each semantic skill for the target domain context, through parametric instantiations that are facilitated by language prompting and contrastive learning-based context inferences. This hierarchical adaptation empowers the framework to not only infer a complex task specification in one-shot from the interleaved multi-modal snippets, but also adapt it to new domains with zero-shot learning abilities. We evaluate our framework with Meta-World, Franka Kitchen, RLBench, and CARLA environments. Small-scale interplanetary magnetic flux ropes (SMFRs) are similar to ICMEs in magnetic structure, but are smaller and do not exhibit ICME plasma signatures. We present a computationally efficient and GPU-powered version of the single-spacecraft automated SMFR detection algorithm based on the Grad-Shafranov (GS) technique. Our algorithm is capable of processing higher resolution data, eliminates selection bias caused by a fixed $\avg{B}$ threshold, has improved detection criteria demonstrated to have better results on an MHD simulation, and recovers full 2.5D cross sections using GS reconstruction. We used it to detect 512,152 SMFRs from 27 years (1996 to 2022) of 3-second cadence \emph{Wind} measurements. Our novel findings are: (1) the radial density of SMFRs at 1 au (${\sim}1$ per $\si{10^6\kilo\meter}$) and filling factor (${\sim}$35\%) are independent of solar activity, distance to the heliospheric current sheet (HCS), and solar wind plasma type, although the minority of SMFRs with diameters greater than ${\sim}$0.01 au have a strong solar activity dependence; (2) SMFR diameters follow a log-normal distribution that peaks below the resolved range ($\gtrsim 10^4$ km), although the filling factor is dominated by SMFRs between $10^5$ to $10^6$ km; (3) most SMFRs at 1 au have strong field-aligned flows like those from PSP measurements; (4) in terms of diameter $d$, SMFR poloidal flux $\propto d^{1.2}$, axial flux $\propto d^{2.0}$, average twist number $\propto d^{-0.8}$, current density $\propto d^{-0.8}$, and helicity $\propto d^{3.2}$. Implications for the origin of SMFRs and switchbacks are briefly discussed. The new algorithm and SMFR dataset are made freely available.

Solar type III radio bursts are generated by beams of energetic electrons that travel along open magnetic field lines through the corona and into interplanetary space. However, understanding the source of these electrons and how they escape into interplanetary space remains an outstanding topic. Here we report multi-instrument, multi-perspective observations of an interplanetary type III radio burst event shortly after the second perihelion of the Parker Solar Probe (PSP). This event was associated with a solar jet that produced an impulsive microwave burst event recorded by the Expanded Owens Valley Solar Array (EOVSA). The type III burst event also coincided with the detection of enhanced in situ energetic electrons recorded by both PSP at 0.37 AU and WIND at 1 AU, which were located very closely on the Parker spiral longitudinally. The close timing association and magnetic connectivity suggest that the in situ energetic electrons originated from the jet's magnetic reconnection region. Intriguingly, microwave imaging spectroscopy results suggest that the escaping energetic electrons were injected into a large opening angle of about 90 degrees, which is at least nine times broader than the apparent width of the jet spire. Our findings provide an interpretation for the previously reported, longitudinally broad spatial distribution of flare locations associated with prompt energetic electron events and have important implications for understanding the origin and distribution of energetic electrons in the interplanetary space., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

The solar active region NOAA 12887 produced a strong X1.0 flare on 2021 October 28, which exhibits X-shaped flare ribbons and a circle-shaped erupting filament. To understand the eruption process with these characteristics, we conducted a data-constrained magnetohydrodynamics simulation using a nonlinear force-free field of the active region about an hour before the flare as the initial condition. Our simulation reproduces the filament eruption observed in the Ha images of GONG and the 304 angstrom images of SDO/AIA and suggests that two mechanisms can possibly contribute to the magnetic eruption. One is the torus instability of the pre-existing magnetic flux rope (MFR), and the other is upward pushing by magnetic loops newly formed below the MFR via continuous magnetic reconnection between two sheared magnetic arcades. The presence of this reconnection is evidenced by the SDO/AIA observations of the 1600 angstrom brightening in the footpoints of the sheared arcades at the flare onset. To clarify which process is more essential for the eruption, we performed an experimental simulation in which the reconnection between the sheared field lines is suppressed. In this case too, the MFR could erupt, but at a much reduced rising speed. We interpret this result as indicating that the eruption is not only driven by the torus instability, but additionally accelerated by newly formed and rising magnetic loops under continuous reconnection., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures. We present evidence that a magnetic flux rope was formed before a coronal mass ejection (CME) and its associated long-duration flare during a pair of preceding confined eruptions and associated impulsive flares in a compound event in NOAA Active Region 12371. Extreme-ultraviolet images and the extrapolated nonlinear force-free field show that the first two, impulsive flares, SOL2015-06-21T01:42, result from the confined eruption of highly sheared low-lying flux, presumably a seed flux rope. The eruption spawns a vertical current sheet, where magnetic reconnection creates flare ribbons and loops, a nonthermal microwave source, and a sigmoidal hot channel which can only be interpreted as a magnetic flux rope. Until the subsequent long-duration flare, SOL2015-06-21T02:36, the sigmoid's elbows expand, while its center remains stationary, suggesting non-equilibrium but not yet instability. The "flare reconnection" during the confined eruptions acts like "tether-cutting reconnection" whose flux feeding of the rope leads to instability. The subsequent full eruption is seen as an accelerated rise of the entire hot channel, seamlessly evolving into the fast halo CME. Both the confined and ejective eruptions are consistent with the onset of the torus instability in the dipped decay index profile which results from the region's two-scale magnetic structure. We suggest that the formation or enhancement of a non-equilibrium but stable flux rope by confined eruptions is a generic process occurring prior to many CMEs., Comment: Accepted by the ApJ; v1: initial submission

A circular ribbon flare SOL2014-12-17T04:51 is studied using the 17/34 GHz maps from the Nobeyama Radioheliograph (NoRH) along with (E)UV and magnetic data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). We report the following three findings as important features of the microwave CRF. (1) The first preflare activation comes in the form of a gradual increase of the 17 GHz flux without a counterpart at 34 GHz, which indicates thermal preheating. The first sign of nonthermal activity occurs in the form of stepwise flux increases at both 17 and 34 GHz about 4 min before the impulsive phase. (2) Until the impulsive phase, the microwave emission over the entire active region is in a single polarization state matching the magnetic polarity of the surrounding fields. During and after the impulsive phase, the sign of the 17 GHz polarization state reverses in the core region, which implies a magnetic breakout--type eruption in a fan-spine magnetic structure. (3) The 17 GHz flux around the time of the eruption shows quasi-periodic variations with periods of 1--2 min. The pre-eruption oscillation is more obvious in total intensity at one end of the flare loop, and the post-eruption oscillation, more obvious in the polarized intensity at a region near the inner spine. We interpret this transition as the transfer of oscillatory power from kink mode oscillation to torsional Alfv\'en waves propagating along the spine field after the eruption. We argue that these three processes are inter-related and indicate a breakout process in a fan-spine structure.

We studied a circular-ribbon flare, SOL2014-12-17T04:51, with emphasis on its thermal evolution as determined by the Differential Emission Measure (DEM) inversion analysis of the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) images of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) instrument onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). Both temperature and emission measure start to rise much earlier than the flare, along with an eruption and formation of a hot halo over the fan structure. In the main flare phase, another set of ribbons forms inside the circular ribbon, and expands as expected for ribbons at the footpoints of a postflare arcade. An additional heating event further extends the decay phase, which is also characteristic of some eruptive flares. The basic magnetic configuration appears to be a fan-spine topology, rooted in a minority-polarity patch surrounded by majority-polarity flux. We suggest that reconnection at the null point begins well before the impulsive phase, when the null is distorted into a breakout current sheet, and that both flare and breakout reconnection are necessary in order to explain the subsequent local thermal evolution and the eruptive activities in this confined magnetic structure. We study an eruptive X1.1 circular-ribbon flare on 2013 November 10, combining multiwavelength observations with a coronal field reconstruction using a non-force-free field method. In the first stage, a filament forms via magnetic reconnection between two mildly twisted sheared arcades, which are embedded under the fan dome associated with a null point. This reconnection seems to be driven by photospheric shearing and converging flows around the inner two arcade footpoints, consistent with the flare-related changes of transverse field. The southern portion of the filament rises upward due to torus instability and pushes against the null point. The induced null point reconnection then generates the circular ribbon and the initial remote brightening in the west, as accelerated electrons precipitate along the fan and propagate outward along quasi-separatix surfaces with high values of the squashing factor (Q) in the envelope fields, which have a curtain-like shape here. In the second stage, the southern end of the flux rope breaks away from the surface, sequentially disrupts the dome and overlying fields, and erupts in a whipping-like fashion to become a partial halo coronal mass ejection. This leads to an enhanced flare emission and fast-moving remote brightenings at the footpoints of the magnetic curtain, which span a remarkably broad region and are also associated with coronal dimmings. Chromospheric activities prior to solar flares provide important clues to solar flare initiation, but are as yet poorly understood. We report a significant and rapid H$\alpha$ line broadening before the solar flare SOL2011-09-29T18:08, that was detected using the unprecedented high-resolution H$\alpha$ imaging spectroscopy with the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS) installed on the 1.6 m New Solar Telescope (NST) at Big Bear Solar Observatory.The strong H$\alpha$ broadening extends as a blue excursion up to -4.5 A and as a red excursion up to 2.0 A, which implies a mixture of velocities in the range of -130 km/s to 38 km/s by applying the cloud model, comparable to the highest chromospheric motions reported before. The H$\alpha$ blueshifted broadening lasts for about 4 minutes, and is temporally and spatially correlated with the start of a rising filament, which is later associated with the main phase of the flare as detected by the Atmosphere Imaging Assembly (AIA) onboard Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). The potential importance of this H$\alpha$ blueshifted broadening as a preflare chromospheric activity is briefly discussed within the context of the two-step eruption model., Comment: Published in Solar Physics

Solar hard X-rays (HXRs) appear in the form of either footpoint sources or coronal sources, and each individual source provides its own critical information on acceleration of nonthermal electrons and plasma heating. Earlier studies found that the HXR emission in some events manifests a broken-up power-law spectrum with the break energy around a few hundred keV based on spatially-integrated spectral analysis, without distinguishing the contributions from individual sources. In this paper, we report the broken-up spectra of a coronal source studied using HXR data recorded by Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) during the SOL2017-09-10T16:06 (GOES class X8.2) flare. The flare occurred behind the western limb with its foot-point sources mostly occulted by the disk, and we could clearly identify such broken-up spectra pertaining solely to the coronal source during the flare peak time and after. Since a significant pileup effect on the RHESSI spectra is expected for this intense solar flare, we have selected the pileup correction factor, $p = 2$. In this case, we found the resulting \textit{RHESSI} temperature (~30 MK) similar to the GOES soft X-ray temperature and break energies of 45--60 keV. Above the break energy the spectrum hardens with time from spectral index of 3.4 to 2.7, and the difference of spectral indices below and above the break energy increases from 1.5 to 5 with time. We, however, note that when $p = 2$ is assumed, a single power-law fitting is also possible with the RHESSI temperature higher than the GOES temperature by ~10 MK. Possible scenarios for the broken-up spectra of the loop-top HXR source are briefly discussed.

Latest observational reports of solar flares reveal some uncommon features of microwave spectra, such as unusually hard (or even positive) spectra, and/or a super-high peak frequency. For a better understanding of these features, we conduct a parameter study to investigate the effect of broken-power-law spectra of energetic electrons on microwave emission on the basis of gyrosynchrotron mechanism. The electron broken-power-law energy distribution is characterized by three parameters, the break energy ($E_B$), the power-law indices below ($\delta_1$) and above ($\delta_2$) the break energy. We find that with the addition of the $\delta_2$ component of the electron spectra, the total flux density can increase by several times in the optically-thick regime, and by orders of magnitude in the optically-thin regime; the peak frequency ($\nu_p$) also increases and can reach up to tens of GHz; and the degree of polarization ($r_c$) decreases in general. We also find that (1) the variation of the flux density is much larger in the optically-thin regime, and the microwave spectra around the peak frequency manifest various profiles with the softening or soft-hard pattern; (2) the parameters $\delta_1$ and $E_B$ affect the microwave spectral index ($\alpha$) and the degree of polarization ($r_c$) mainly in the optically-thick regime, while $\delta_2$ mainly affects the optically-thin regime. The results are helpful in understanding the lately-reported microwave bursts with unusual spectral features and point out the demands for a more-complete spectral coverage of microwave bursts, especially, in the high-frequency regime, say, $>10-20$ GHz.

Large-scale propagating fronts are frequently observed during solar eruptions, yet it is open whether they are waves or not, partly because the propagation is modulated by coronal structures, whose magnetic field we still cannot measure. However, when a front impacts coronal structures, an opportunity arises for us to look into the magnetic properties of both interacting parties in the low-$\beta$ corona. Here we studied large-scale EUV fronts accompanying three coronal mass ejections (CMEs), each originating from a kinking rope-like structure in the NOAA active region (AR) 12371. These eruptions were homologous and the surrounding coronal structures remained stationary. Hence we treated the events as one observed from three different viewing angles, and found that the primary front directly associated with the CME consistently transmits through 1) a polar coronal hole, 2) the ends of a crescent-shaped equatorial coronal hole, leaving a stationary front outlining its AR-facing boundary, and 3) two quiescent filaments, producing slow and diffuse secondary fronts. The primary front also propagates along an arcade of coronal loops and slows down due to foreshortening at the far side, where local plasma heating is indicated by an enhancement in 211 {\AA} (Fe XIV) but a dimming in 193 {\AA} (Fe XII) and 171 {\AA} (Fe IX). The strength of coronal magnetic field is therefore estimated to be $\sim\,$2 G in the polar coronal hole and $\sim\,$4 G in the coronal arcade neighboring the active region. The photospheric response to solar flares, also known as coronal back reaction, is often observed as sudden flare-induced changes in vector magnetic field and sunspot motions. However, it remains obscure whether evolving flare ribbons, the flare signature closest to the photosphere, are accompanied by changes in vector magnetic field therein. Here we explore the relationship between the dynamics of flare ribbons in the chromosphere and variations of magnetic fields in the underlying photosphere, using high-resolution off-band H-alpha images and near-infrared vector magnetograms of the M6.5 flare on 2015 June 22 observed with the 1.6 m Goode Solar Telescope. We find that changes of photospheric fields occur at the arrival of the flare ribbon front, thus propagating analogously to flare ribbons. In general, the horizontal field increases and the field lines become more inclined to the surface. When ribbons sweep through regions that undergo a rotational motion, the fields transiently turn more vertical with decreased horizontal field and inclination angle, and then restore and/or become more horizontal than before the ribbon arrival. The ribbon propagation decelerates near the sunspot rotation center, where the vertical field becomes permanently enhanced. Similar magnetic field changes are discernible in magnetograms from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI), and an inward collapse of coronal magnetic fields is inferred from the time sequence of non-linear force-free field models extrapolated from HMI magnetograms. A recent laboratory experiment of ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities reveals four distinct eruption regimes readily distinguished by the torus instability (TI) and helical kink instability (KI) parameters \citep{Myers2015}. To establish its observational counterpart, we collect 38 solar flares (stronger than GOES class M5 in general) that took place within 45$^{\circ}$ of disk center during 2011$-$2017, 26 of which are associated with a halo or partial halo coronal mass ejection (CME) (i.e., ejective events), while the others are CMEless (i.e., confined events). This is a complete sample of solar events satisfying our selection criteria detailed in the paper. For each event, we calculate decay index $n$ of the potential strapping field above the magnetic flux rope (MFR) in and around the flaring magnetic polarity inversion line (a TI parameter), and the unsigned twist number $T_w$ of the non-linear force-free (NLFF) field lines forming the same MFR (a KI parameter). We then construct a $n-T_w$ diagram to investigate how the eruptiveness depends on these parameters. We find: (1) $T_w$ appears to play little role in discriminating between confined and ejective events; (2) the events with $n\gtrsim0.8$ are all ejective and all confined events have $n\lesssim0.8$. However, $n\gtrsim0.8$ is not a necessary condition for eruption, because some events with $n\lesssim0.8$ also erupted. In addition, we investigate the MFR's geometrical parameters, apex height and distance between footpoints, as a possible factor for the eruptiveness. We report a different type of three-minute chromospheric oscillations above a sunspot in association with a small-scale impulsive event in a light bridge. During our observations, we found a transient brightening in the light bridge. The brightening was composed of elementary bursts that may be a manifestation of fast repetitive magnetic reconnections in the light bridge. Interestingly, the oscillations in the nearby sunspot umbra were impulsively excited when the intensity of the brightening reached its peak. The initial period of the oscillations was about 2.3 minutes and then gradually increased to 3.0 minutes with time. In addition, we found that the amplitude of the excited oscillations was twice the amplitude of oscillations before the brightening. Based on our results, we propose that magnetic reconnection occurring in a light bridge can excite of oscillations in the nearby sunspot umbra., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

Solar flare ribbons provide an important clue to the magnetic reconnection process and associated magnetic field topology in the solar corona. We detected a large-scale secondary flare ribbon of a circular shape that developed in association with two successive M-class flares and one CME. The ribbon revealed interesting properties such as 1) a quasi-circular shape and enclosing the central active region; 2) the size as large as 500\arcsec\, by 650\arcsec\,, 3) successive brightenings in the clockwise direction at a speed of \kms{160} starting from the nearest position to the flaring sunspots, 4) radial contraction and expansion in the northern and the southern part, respectively at speeds of $\leq$ \kms{10}. Using multi-wavelength data from \textit{SDO}, \textit{RHESSI}, XRT, and Nobeyama, along with magnetic field extrapolations, we found that: 1) the secondary ribbon location is consistent with the field line footpoints of a fan-shaped magnetic structure that connects the flaring region and the ambient decaying field; 2) the second M2.6 flare occurred when the expanding coronal loops driven by the first M2.0 flare encountered the background decayed field. 3) Immediately after the second flare, the secondary ribbon developed along with dimming regions. Based on our findings, we suggest that interaction between the expanding sigmoid field and the overlying fan-shaped field triggered the secondary reconnection that resulted in the field opening and formation of the quasi-circular secondary ribbon. We thus conclude that interaction between the active region and the ambient large-scale fields should be taken into account to fully understand the entire eruption process., Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ, (20 pages, 13 figures)

How eruption can recur from a confined magnetic structure is discussed based on the {\it Solar Dynamics Observatory} (SDO) observations of the NOAA active region 11444, which produced three eruptions within 1.5 hours on March 27, 2012. The active region had the positive polarity magnetic fields in the center surrounded by the negative polarity fields around. Since such a distribution of magnetic polarity tends to form a dome-like magnetic fan structure confined over the active region, the multiple eruptions was puzzling. Our investigation reveals that this event exhibits several properties distinct from other eruptions associated with magnetic fan structures: (i) a long filament encircling the active region was present before the eruptions; (ii) expansion of the open-closed boundary of the field lines after each eruption suggestive of the growing fan-dome structure, and (iii) the ribbons inside the closed magnetic polarity inversion line evolving in response to the expanding open-closed boundary. It thus appears that in spite of multiple eruptions the fan-dome structure remained undamaged, and the closing back field lines after each eruption rather reinforced the fan-dome structure. We argue that the multiple eruptions could occur in this active region in spite of its confined magnetic structure because the filament encircling the active region was adequate for slipping through the magnetic separatrix to minimize the damage to its overlying fan-dome structure. It is now a common practice to use local magnetic parameters such as magnetic decay index for explaining solar eruptions from active regions, but there can be an alternative view that the global properties of the source region should be counted as a more important factor. We discuss this issue based on {\it Solar Dynamics Observatory} (SDO) observations of the three successive eruptions within 1.5 hours from the NOAA active region 11444 and the magnetic parameters calculated using the nonlinear force-free field (NLFFF) model. Two violent eruptions occurred in the regions with relatively high magnetic twist number (0.5--1.5) and high decay index (0.9--1.1) at the nominal height of the filament (12$''$) and otherwise a mild eruption occurred, which supports the local parameter paradigm. Our main point is that the time sequence of the eruptions did not go with these parameters. It is argued that an additional factor, in the form of stabilizing force, should operate to determine the onset of the first eruption and temporal behaviors of subsequent eruptions. As supporting evidence, we report that the heating and fast plasma flow continuing for a timescale of an hour was the direct cause for the first eruption, and that the unidirectional propagation of the disturbance determined the timing of subsequent eruptions. We report the intriguing large-scale dynamic phenomena associated with the M6.5 flare~(SOL2015-06-22T18:23) in NOAA active region 12371, observed by RHESSI, Fermi, and the Atmospheric Image Assembly (AIA) and Magnetic Imager (HMI) on the Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO). The most interesting feature of this event is a third ribbon (R3) arising in the decay phase, propagating along a dimming channel (seen in EUV passbands) towards a neighboring sunspot. The propagation of R3 occurs in the presence of hard X-ray footpoint emission, and is broadly visible at temperatures from 0.6~MK to over 10~MK through the Differential Emission Measure (DEM) analysis. The coronal loops then undergo an apparent slipping motion following the same path of R3, after a $\sim$ 80~min delay. To understand the underlying physics, we investigate the magnetic configuration and the thermal structure of the flaring region. Our results are in favor of a slipping-type reconnection followed by the thermodynamic evolution of coronal loops. In comparison with those previously reported slipping reconnection events, this one proceeds across a particularly long distance ($\sim$60 Mm) over a long period of time ($\sim$50 min), and shows two clearly distinguished phases: the propagation of the footpoint brightening driven by nonthermal particle injection and the apparent slippage of loops governed by plasma heating and subsequent cooling.

Sunspots are concentrations of magnetic field visible on the solar surface (photosphere). It was considered implausible that solar flares, as resulted from magnetic reconnection in the tenuous corona, would cause a direct perturbation of the dense photosphere involving bulk motion. Here we report the sudden flare-induced rotation of a sunspot using the unprecedented spatiotemporal resolution of the 1.6 m New Solar Telescope, supplemented by magnetic data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory. It is clearly observed that the rotation is non-uniform over the sunspot: as the flare ribbon sweeps across, its different portions accelerate (up to 50 deg per hr) at different times corresponding to peaks of flare hard X-ray emission. The rotation may be driven by the surface Lorentz-force change due to the back reaction of coronal magnetic restructuring and is accompanied by a downward Poynting flux. The dynamic properties of flare ribbons and the often associated filament eruptions can provide crucial information on the flaring coronal magnetic field. This Letter analyzes the GOES-class X1.0 flare on 2014 March 29 (SOL2014-03-29T17:48), in which we found an asymmetric eruption of a sigmoidal filament and an ensuing circular flare ribbon. Initially both EUV images and a preflare nonlinear force-free field model show that the filament is embedded in magnetic fields with a fan-spine-like structure. In the first phase, which is defined by a weak but still increasing X-ray emission, the western portion of the sigmoidal filament arches upward and then remains quasi-static for about five minutes. The western fan-like and the outer spine-like fields display an ascending motion, and several associated ribbons begin to brighten. Also found is a bright EUV flow that streams down along the eastern fan-like field. In the second phase that includes the main peak of hard X-ray (HXR) emission, the filament erupts, leaving behind two major HXR sources formed around its central dip portion and a circular ribbon brightened sequentially. The expanding western fan-like field interacts intensively with the outer spine-like field, as clearly seen in running difference EUV images. We discuss these observations in favor of a scenario where the asymmetric eruption of the sigmoidal filament is initiated due to an MHD instability and further facilitated by reconnection at a quasi-null in corona; the latter is in turn enhanced by the filament eruption and subsequently produces the circular flare ribbon., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted to ApJ Letters

We carry out a comprehensive investigation comparing the three-dimensional magnetic field restructuring, flare energy release, and the helioseismic response, of two homologous flares, the 2011 September 6 X2.1 (FL1) and September 7 X1.8 (FL2) flares in NOAA AR 11283. In our analysis, (1) a twisted flux rope (FR) collapses onto the surface at a speed of 1.5 km/s after a partial eruption in FL1. The FR then gradually grows to reach a higher altitude and collapses again at 3 km/s after a fuller eruption in FL2. Also, FL2 shows a larger decrease of the flux-weighted centroid separation of opposite magnetic polarities and a greater change of the horizontal field on the surface. These imply a more violent coronal implosion with corresponding more intense surface signatures in FL2. (2) The FR is inclined northward, and together with the ambient fields, it undergoes a southward turning after both events. This agrees with the asymmetric decay of the penumbra observed in the peripheral regions. (3) The amounts of free magnetic energy and nonthermal electron energy released during FL1 are comparable to those of FL2 within the uncertainties of the measurements. (4) No sunquake was detected in FL1; in contrast, FL2 produced two seismic emission sources S1 and S2 both lying in the penumbral regions. Interestingly, S1 and S2 are connected by magnetic loops, and the stronger source S2 has weaker vertical magnetic field. Magnetic reconnection is one of the primary mechanisms for triggering solar eruptive events, but direct observation of its rapid process has been of challenge. In this Letter we present, using a nonlinear force-free field (NLFFF) extrapolation technique, a visualization of field line connectivity changes resulting from tether-cutting reconnection over about 30 minutes during the 2011 February 13 M6.6 flare in NOAA AR 11158. Evidence for the tether-cutting reconnection was first collected through multiwavelength observations and then by the analysis of the field lines traced from positions of four conspicuous flare 1700 A footpoints observed at the event onset. Right before the flare, the four footpoints are located very close to the regions of local maxima of magnetic twist index. Especially, the field lines from the inner two footpoints form two strongly twisted flux bundles (up to ~1.2 turns), which shear past each other and reach out close to the outer two footpoints, respectively. Immediately after the flare, the twist index of regions around the footpoints greatly diminish and the above field lines become low lying and less twisted (~0.6 turns), overarched by loops linking the later formed two flare ribbons. About 10% of the flux (~3x10^19 Mx) from the inner footpoints has undergone a footpoint exchange. This portion of flux originates from the edge regions of the inner footpoints that are brightened first. These rapid changes of magnetic field connectivity inferred from the NLFFF extrapolation are consistent with the tether-cutting magnetic reconnection model., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted to the Astrophysical Journal Letters

He I D3 line has a unique response to the flare impact on the low solar atmosphere and can be a powerful diagnostic tool for energy transport processes. Using images obtained from the recently digitized films of Big Bear Solar Observatory, we report D3 observation of the M6.3 flare on 1984 May 22, which occurred in an active region with a circular magnetic polarity inversion line (PIL). The impulsive phase of the flare starts with a main elongated source that darkens in D3, inside of which bright emission kernels appear at the time of the initial small peak in hard X-rays (HXRs). These flare cores subsequently evolve into a sharp emission strand lying within the dark halo simultaneously with the main peak in HXRs, reversing the overall source contrast from -5% to 5%. The radiated energy in D3 during the main peak is estimated to be about 10^30 ergs, which is comparable to that carried by nonthermal electrons above 20 keV. Afterwards the flare proceeds along the circular PIL in the counterclockwise direction to form a dark circular ribbon in D3, which apparently mirrors the bright ribbons in Halpha and He I 10830 A. All these ribbons last for over one hour in the late gradual phase. We suggest that the present event resembles the so-called black-light flare that is proposed based on continuum images, and that D3 darkening and brightening features herein may be due to, respectively, the thermal conduction heating and the direct precipitation of high-energy electrons., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted to the Astrophysical Journal

Recently a distinctive class of hard X ray (HXR) sources located in the corona was found, which implies that the collisionally thick target model (CTTM) applies even to the corona. We investigated whether this idea can independently be verified by microwave radiations that have been known as the best companion to HXRs. The study is made for the GOES M2.3 class flare occurred on 2002 September 9 that were observed by the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) and the Owens Valley Solar Array (OVSA). Interpreting the observed energy dependent variation of HXR source size under the CTTM the coronal density should be as high as $5\times 10^{11}$ cm$^{-3}$ over the distance up to 12$"$. To explain the cut-off feature of microwave spectrum at 3 GHz, we however, need density no higher than $1\times 10^{11}$ cm$^{-3}$. Additional constraints need to be placed on temperature and magnetic field of the coronal source in order to reproduce the microwave spectrum as a whole. Firstly, a spectral feature called the Razin suppression requires the magnetic field in a range of 250--350 gauss along with high viewing angles around 75$^{\rm o}$. Secondly, to avoid excess fluxes at high frequencies due to the free-free emission that were not observed, we need a high temperature $\geq2\times 10^7$ K. These two microwave spectral features, Razzin suppression and free-free emissions, become more significant at regions of high thermal plasma density and are essential for validating and for determining additional parameters for the coronal HXR sources., Comment: APJ Letters, in press

The rapid, irreversible change of the photospheric magnetic field has been recognized as an important element of the solar flare process. This Letter reports such a rapid change of magnetic fields during the 2011 February 13 M6.6 flare in NOAA AR 11158 that we found from the vector magnetograms of the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager with 12-min cadence. High-resolution magnetograms of Hinode that are available at ~-5.5, -1.5, 1.5, and 4 hrs relative to the flare maximum are used to reconstruct three-dimensional coronal magnetic field under the nonlinear force-free field (NLFFF) assumption. UV and hard X-ray images are also used to illuminate the magnetic field evolution and energy release. The rapid change is mainly detected by HMI in a compact region lying in the center of the magnetic sigmoid, where the mean horizontal field strength exhibited a significant increase by 28%. The region lies between the initial strong UV and hard X-ray sources in the chromosphere, which are cospatial with the central feet of the sigmoid according to the NLFFF model. The NLFFF model further shows that strong coronal currents are concentrated immediately above the region, and that more intriguingly, the coronal current system underwent an apparent downward collapse after the sigmoid eruption. In this paper, we present a multi-wavelength analysis of an eruptive white-light M3.2 flare which occurred in active region NOAA 10486 on November 1, 2003. Excellent set of high resolution observations made by RHESSI and TRACE provide clear evidence of significant pre-flare activities for ~9 minutes in the form of an initiation phase observed at EUV/UV wavelengths followed by the X-ray precursor phase. During the initiation phase, we observed localized brightenings in the highly sheared core region close to the filament and interactions among short EUV loops overlying the filament which led to the opening of magnetic field lines. The X-ray precursor phase is manifested in RHESSI measurements below ~30 keV and coincided with the beginning of flux emergence at the flaring location along with early signatures of the eruption. From the RHESSI observations, we conclude that both plasma heating and electron acceleration occurred during the precursor phase. The main flare is consistent with the standard flare model. However, after the impulsive phase, intense HXR looptop source was observed without significant footpoint emission. More intriguingly, for a brief period the looptop source exhibited strong HXR emission with energies up to 100 keV and significant non-thermal characteristics. The present study indicates a causal relation between the activities in the preflare and main flare. We also conclude that pre-flare activities, occurred in the form of subtle magnetic reorganization along with localized magnetic reconnection, played a crucial role in destabilizing the active region filament leading to solar eruptive flare and associated large-scale phenomena., Comment: 31 pages, 13 figures; Accepted in The Astrophysical Journal

Magnetic reconnection changes the magnetic field topology and powers explosive events in astrophysical, space and laboratory plasmas. For flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in the solar atmosphere, the standard model predicts the presence of a reconnecting current sheet, which has been the subject of considerable theoretical and numerical modeling over the last fifty years, yet direct, unambiguous observational verification has been absent. In this Letter we show a bright sheet structure of global length (>0.25 Rsun) and macroscopic width ((5 - 10)x10^3 km) distinctly above the cusp-shaped flaring loop, imaged during the flare rising phase in EUV. The sheet formed due to the stretch of a transequatorial loop system, and was accompanied by various reconnection signatures that have been dispersed in the literature. Filament eruptions and hard X-ray (HXR) source motions are commonly observed in solar flares, which provides critical information on the coronal magnetic reconnection. This Letter reports an event on 2005 January 15, in which we found an asymmetric filament eruption and a subsequent coronal mass ejection together with complicated motions of HXR sources during the GOES-class X2.6 flare. The HXR sources initially converge to the magnetic polarity inversion line (PIL), and then move in directions either parallel or perpendicular to the PIL depending on the local field configuration. We distinguish the evolution of the HXR source motion in four phases and associate each of them with distinct regions of coronal magnetic fields as reconstructed using a non-linear force-free field extrapolation. It is found that the magnetic reconnection proceeds along the PIL toward the regions where the overlying field decreases with height more rapidly. It is also found that not only the perpendicular but the parallel motion of the HXR sources correlates well with the HXR lightcurve. We have investigated the variation of magnetic helicity over a span of several days around the times of 11 X-class flares which occurred in seven active regions (NOAA 9672, 10030, 10314, 10486, 10564, 10696, and 10720) using the magnetograms taken by the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). As a major result we found that each of these major flares was preceded by a significant helicity accumulation over a long period (0.5 to a few days). Another finding is that the helicity accumulates at a nearly constant rate and then becomes nearly constant before the flares. This led us to distinguish the helicity variation into two phases: a phase of monotonically increasing helicity and the following phase of relatively constant helicity. As expected, the amount of helicity accumulated shows a modest correlation with time-integrated soft X-ray flux during flares. However, the average helicity change rate in the first phase shows even stronger correlation with the time-integrated soft X-ray flux. We discuss the physical implications of this result and the possibility that this characteristic helicity variation pattern can be used as an early warning sign for solar eruptions.

We present a multiwavelength study of the 2005 September 13 eruption from NOAA 10808 that produced total four flares and two fast coronal mass ejections (CMEs) within 1.5 hours. Our primary attention is paid to the fact that these eruptions occurred in close succession in time, and that all of them were located along an S-shaped magnetic polarity inversion line (PIL) of the active region. In our analysis, (1) the disturbance created by the first flare propagated southward along the PIL to cause a major filament eruption that led to the first CME and the associated second flare underneath. (2) The first CME partially removed the overlying magnetic fields over the northern Delta spot to allow the third flare and the second CME. (3) The ribbon separation during the fourth flare would indicate reclosing of the overlying field lines opened by the second CME. It is thus concluded that this series of flares and CMEs are interrelated to each other via magnetic reconnections between the expanding magnetic structure and the nearby magnetic fields. We present a detailed multi-wavelength analysis and interpretation of the evolution of an M7.6 flare on October 24, 2003. The X-ray observations of the flare taken from the RHESSI spacecraft reveal two phases of the flare evolution. The first phase is characterized by the altitude decrease of the X-ray looptop (LT) source for $\sim$11 minutes. Such a long duration of the descending LT source motion is reported for the first time. The EUV loops, located below the X-ray LT source, also undergo contraction with similar speed ($\sim$15 km s$^{-1}$) in this interval. During the second phase the two distinct hard X-ray footpoints (FP) sources are observed which correlate well with UV and H$\alpha$ flare ribbons. The X-ray LT source now exhibits upward motion. The RHESSI spectra during the first phase are soft and indicative of hot thermal emission from flaring loops with temperatures $T>25$ MK at the early stage. On the other hand, the spectra at high energies ($\varepsilon \gtrsim$25 keV) follow hard power laws during the second phase ($\gamma = 2.6-2.8$). We show that the observed motion of the LT and FP sources can be understood as a consequence of three-dimensional magnetic reconnection at a separator in the corona. During the first phase of the flare, the reconnection releases an excess of magnetic energy related to the magnetic tensions generated before a flare by the shear flows in the photosphere. The relaxation of the associated magnetic shear in the corona by the reconnection process explains the descending motion of the LT source. The rare phenomenon of ribbon-like hard X-ray (HXR) sources up to 100 keV found in the 2005 May 13 M8.0 flare observed with the \textit{Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager} provides detailed information on the spatial distribution of flare HXR emission. In this Letter, we further investigate the characteristics of HXR emission in this event using imaging spectroscopy, from which we obtain spatially resolved HXR spectral maps during the flare impulsive phase. As a result we found, along a flare ribbon, an anticorrelation relationship between the local HXR flux and the local HXR spectral index. We suggest that this can be regarded as a spatial analog of the well-known temporal soft-hard-soft spectral evolution pattern of the integrated HXR flux. This paper presents a multiwavelength study of the M8.0 flare and its associated fast halo CME that originated from a bipolar active region NOAA 10759 on 2005 May 13. The source active region has a conspicuous sigmoid structure at TRACE 171 A channel as well as in the SXI soft X-ray images, and we mainly concern ourselves with the detailed process of the sigmoid eruption as evidenced by the multiwavelength data ranging from Halpha, WL, EUV/UV, radio, and hard X-rays (HXRs). The most important finding is that the flare brightening starts in the core of the active region earlier than that of the rising motion of the flux rope. This timing clearly addresses one of the main issues in the magnetic eruption onset of sigmoid, namely, whether the eruption is initiated by an internal tether-cutting to allow the flux rope to rise upward or a flux rope rises due to a loss of equilibrium to later induce tether cutting below it. Our high time cadence SXI and Halpha data shows that the first scenario is relevant to this eruption. As other major findings, we have the RHESSI HXR images showing a change of the HXR source from a confined footpoint structure to an elongated ribbon-like structure after the flare maximum, which we relate to the sigmoid-to-arcade evolution. Radio dynamic spectrum shows a type II precursor that occurred at the time of expansion of the sigmoid and a drifting pulsating structure in the flare rising phase in HXR. Finally type II and III bursts are seen at the time of maximum HXR emission, simultaneous with the maximum reconnection rate derived from the flare ribbon motion in UV. Solar flare emissions at Halpha and EUV/UV wavelengths often appear in the form of two ribbons, which has been regarded as evidence for a typical configuration of solar magnetic reconnection. However, such a ribbon structure has rarely been observed in hard X-rays (HXRs), although it is expected as well. In this letter, we report a ribbon-like HXR source observed with the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) at energies as high as 25-100 keV during the 2005 May 13 flare. For a qualitative understanding of this unusual HXR morphology, we also note that the source active region appeared in a conspicuous sigmoid shape before the eruption and changed to an arcade structure afterward as observed with the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE) at 171 A. In this paper, we are primarily concerened with the solar neutron emission during the 1990 May 24 flare, utilizing the counting rate of the Climax neutron monitor and the time profiles of hard X-rays and gamma-rays obtained with the GRANAT satellite (Pelaez et al., 1992; Talon et al., 1993; Terekhov et al., 1993). We compare the derived neutron injection function with macroscopic parameters of the flare region as obtained from the H-alpha and microwave observations made at the Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) and the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) respectively. Our results are summarized as folows: (1) to explain the neutron monitor counting rate and 57.5-110 MeV and 2.2 MeV gamma-ray time profiles, we consider a two-component neutron injection function, Q(E, t). (2) From the H-alpha observations, we find a relatively small loop of length approximattely equal to 2 x 10(exp 4) km, which may be regarded as the source for the fast-decaying component of gamma-rays (57.5-110 MeV) and for the first component of neutron emission. From microwave visibility and the microwave total power spectrum we postulate the presence of a rather big loop (approximately equal to 2 x 10(exp 5) km), which we regard as being responsible for the slow-decaying component of the high-energy emission. We show how the neutron and gamma-ray emission data can be explained in terms of the macroscopic parameters derived from the H-alpha and microwave observations. (3) The H-alpha observations also reveal the presence of a fast mode MHD shock (the Moreton wave) which precedes the microwave peak by 20-30 s and the peak of gamma-ray intensity by 40-50 s. From this relative timing and the single-pulsed time profiles of both radiations, we can attribute the whole event as due to a prompt acceleration of both electrons and protons by the shock and subsequent deceleration of the trapped particles while they propagate inside the magnetic loops.

We analyze the time variation of microwave spectra and hard X-ray spectra of 1989 March 18, which are obtained from the Solar Array at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) and the Hard X-Ray Burst Spectrometer (HXRBS) on the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM), respectively. From this observation, it is noted that the hard X-ray spectra gradually soften over 50 - 200 keV on-and-after the maximum phase while the microwaves at 1 - 15 GHz show neither a change in spectral shape nor as rapid a decay as hard X-rays. This leads to decoupling of hard X-rays from the microwaves in the decay phase away from their good correlation seen in the initial rise phase. To interpret this observation, we adopt a view that microwave-emitting particles and hard X-ray particles are physically separated in an inhomogeneous magnetic loop, but linked via interactions with the Whistler waves generated during flares. From this viewpoint, it is argued that the observed decoupling of microwaves from hard X-rays may be due to the different ability of each source region to maintain high energy electrons in response to the Whistler waves passing through the entire loop. To demonstrate this possibility, we solve a Fokker-Planck equation that describes evolution of electrons interacting with the Whistler waves, taking into account the variation of Fokker-Planck coefficients with physical quantities of the background medium. The numerical Fokker-Planck solutions are then used to calculate microwave spectra and hard X-ray spectra for agreement with observations. Our model results are as follows: in a sronger field region, the energy loss by electron escape due to scattering by the waves is greatly enhanced resulting in steep particle distributions that reproduce the observed hard X-ray spectra. In a region with weaker fields and lower density, this loss term is reduced allowing high energy electrons to survive longer so that microwaves can be emitted there in excess of hard X-rays during the decay phase of the flare. Our results based on spectral fitting of a flare event are discussed in comparison with previous studies of microwaves and hard X-rays based on either temporal or spatial information.

We report peculiar spectral activity of four large microwave bursts as obtained from the Solar Arrays at the Owens Valey Radio Observatory during observations of X-class flares on 24 May 1990 and 7, 8, 22 March 1991. Main observational points that we newly uncovered are: (1) flat flux spectra over 1-18 GHz in large amounts of flux ranging from 10(exp 2) to 10(exp 4) s.f.u. at the maximum phase, (2) a common evolutionary pattern in which the spectral region of dominant flux shifts from high frequencies at the initial rise to low frequencies at the decaying phase, and (3) unusual time profiles that are impulsive at high frequencies but more extended at lower frequencies. We carry out the model calculations of microwave spectra under assumptions of gyrosynchrotron mechanism and a dipole field configuration to reproduce the observational characteristics. Our results are summarized as follows. First, a flat microwave spectrum reaching up to 10(exp 2) - 10(exp 4) s.f.u. may occur in a case where a magnetic loop is extended to an angular size of approximately (0.7-7.0) x 10(exp -7) sterad and contains a huge number (N(E greater than 10 keV) approx. 10(exp 36) - 10(exp 38)) of nonthermal electrons with power-law index approx. 3-3.5 over the entire volume. Second, the observed spectral activity could adequately be accounted for by the shrinking of the region of nonthermal electrons to the loop top and by the softening of the power-law spectrum of electrons in a time scale ranging 3-45 min depending on the event. Third, the extended microwave activity at lower frequencies is probably due to electrons trapped in the loop top where magnetic fields are low. Finally, we clarify the physical distinction between these large, extended microwave bursts and the gradual/post-microwave bursts often seen in weak events, both of which are characterized by long-period activity and broadband spectra.

The center-to-limb variation of both the spectral and spatial brightness distributions is investigated using a series of microwave observations of a sunspot in the active region NOAA 4741. Depending on the heliocentric position of the sunspot, the microwave emission appears in two typical profiles: either a ring structure near the center of the disk or a single-peak structure near the limb. Due to the increase of the gyroresonance opacity of the field lines near the spot center as the viewing angle increases, the brightness temperature at high, optically thin frequencies increases slightly as the spot approaches the limb. In addition, a change of effective harmonic, which accompanies a discontinuous change in the degree of polarization, characterizes the center-to-limb variation of the gyroresonance spectrum. Finally, the height of the gyroresonance layer, low in the corona of the active region, is determined from a change of spectrum from gyroresonance to free-free emission as the spot passes over the solar limb.

The magnetic field strength of a sunspot can be determined from the gyroresonance brightness temperature spectrum by using the property that microwave brightness is limited above a frequency given by an integer-multiple of the gyrofrequency. This concept is used to find the radial distribution of the magnetic field at the coronal base of a sunspot in the active region NOAA 4741. It is shown that the o-mode emission must arise primarily from the second harmonic of the gyrofrequency, and that the third harmonic is responsible for the x-mode emission. An expression is given to describe the radial distribution of magnetic fields at the coronal base of a sunspot. Coronal magnetic fields are found to originate mainly in the photospheric umbral region. Finally, while it is possible to approximate roughly the derived vertical variation of magnetic fields by means of a dipole model, the radial field distribution at coronal heights is determined to be more confined than predicted by this model.

In this paper we analyze the generation of waves in a sunspot by extending Stein's hydrodynamic approach to the turbulent medium permeated by a strong uniform magnetic field oriented parallel to the gravity. For wave sources appropriate to the sunspot, we consider magnetic perturbations and entropy changes as well as turbulent convection. To describe the anisotropy imposed by the sunspot, we use a one-dimensional correlation function relating the turbulent eddies separated along the symmetry axis of the spot. This treatment yields several interesting possibilities for wave generation in a sunspot. First, it is demonstrated that the entropy change and magnetic perturbation can lead to a relative enhancement of acoustic wave emission. Second, the energy flux of Alfven waves may be comparable to that of acoustic waves in sunspots. Third, the anisotropy of the sunspot dynamics can lead to wave energy spectrum in a form which may explain the origin of umbral atmospheric oscillations.

New measurements of Moving Magnetic Features (MMFs) based on the observations of the active region NOAA 5612 made at Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) on August 2, 1989 are presented. The existing theoretical models are checked against the new observations, and the origin of MMFs conjectured from the deduced observational constraints is discussed.
