Polarizing optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry are used to determine the phase sequence of three liquid crystalline 4-pentylphenyl-4'-n-alkyloxythiobenzoates with n = 9, 10, 11. The X-ray diffraction method is applied for structural characterization of the liquid crystalline phases. The smectic layer spacing, tilt angle, average distance between the long axes of molecules and correlation length of the short-range order are determined as a function of temperature. For the crystal-like smectic phases with hexagonal or herring-bone packing, the unit cell parameters are obtained. The presence of the tilted hexagonal phase for n = 10, 11 and tilted herring-bone phase for n = 9, 10 is indicated, although the direction of the tilt cannot be determined., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures

Chiral liquid crystalline compounds belonging to the homologous series of (S)-4'-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonyl)biphenyl-4-yl 4-[m-(2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutoxy)alk-1-oxy]-2-fluorobenzoates show various behavior on cooling depending on the length of the CmH2m chain. The homologue with m = 2 crystallizes, while for m = 5, 6, 7, and presumably also for m = 3, the glass of the anticlinic smectic CA* phase is formed. The previous results for m = 4 suggest that this homologue may also be a glassformer. This paper presents the study of the crystallization kinetics for the compound with m = 4 in isothermal conditions (by polarizing optical microscopy) and for the 5-40 K/min cooling rates (by differential scanning calorimetry). Microscopic observations enable estimation of the energy barrier for nucleation, which equals 409 kJ/mol. The threshold cooling rate necessary for complete vitrification of the smectic CA* phase, obtained by extrapolating the enthalpy change during crystallization to zero, is equal to 81 K/min or 64 K/min for the linear and parabolic fit, respectively. The structural studies by X-ray diffraction show that crystal phases have lamellar structures both in the pristine sample and after crystallization from the melt but with different layer spacing. A weak relaxation process is detected in the sample after melt crystallization, revealing the presence of the conformational disorder. The dynamic glass transition temperature of the SmCA* phase, estimated from the relaxation time of the PH process (as the {\alpha}-relaxation time could not be registered in a wide enough temperature range), is 244 K., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures

The memristive device is one of the basic elements of novel, brain-inspired, fast, and energy-efficient information processing systems in which there is no separation between memorization and information analysis functions. Since the first demonstration of the resistive switching effect, several types of memristive devices have been developed. In most of them, the memristive effect originates from direct modification of the conducting area, e.g. conducting filament formation/disintegration, or semiconductor doping/dedoping. Here, we report a solution-processed lateral memristive device based on a new conductivity modulation mechanism. The device architecture resembles that of an organic field-effect transistor in which the top gate electrode is replaced with an additional insulator layer containing mobile ions. Alteration of the ion distribution under the influence of applied potential changes the electric field, modifying the conductivity of the semiconductor channel. The devices exhibit highly stable current-voltage hysteresis loops and Short-Term Plasticity (STP). We also demonstrate short-term synaptic plasticity with tunable time constants.
