We report new limits on the kinetic mixing strength of the dark photon spanning the mass range 0.21 -- 1.24 $\mu$eV corresponding to a frequency span of 50 -- 300 MHz. The Dark E-Field Radio experiment is a wide-band search for dark photon dark matter. In this paper we detail changes in calibration and upgrades since our proof-of-concept pilot run. Our detector employs a wide bandwidth E-field antenna moved to multiple positions in a shielded room, a low noise amplifier, wideband ADC, followed by a $2^{24}$-point FFT. An optimal filter searches for signals with Q $\approx10^6$. In nine days of integration, this system is capable of detecting dark photon signals corresponding to $\epsilon$ several orders of magnitude lower than previous limits. We find a 95% exclusion limit on $\epsilon$ over this mass range between $6\times 10^{-15}$ and $6\times 10^{-13}$, tracking the complex resonant mode structure in the shielded room., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, submitted to PRD

How much do financial management fees cost investors? This article studies an approximate formula for the cumulative costs of annual Assets Under Management (AUM) fees. The formula states that an investment paying an annual fee of $\epsilon$% of AUM over $N$ years loses almost $N\epsilon$% of its value, compared to an investment with the same returns paying no fee. The article explains this formula intuitively, derives it analytically, and studies its approximation error. We are building an experiment to search for dark matter in the form of dark photons in the nano- to milli-eV mass range. This experiment is the electromagnetic dual of magnetic detector dark radio experiments. It is also a frequency-time dual experiment in two ways: We search for a high-Q signal in wide-band data rather than tuning a high-$Q$ resonator, and we measure electric rather than magnetic fields. In this paper we describe a pilot experiment using room temperature electronics which demonstrates feasibility and sets useful limits to the kinetic coupling $\epsilon \sim 10^{-12}$ over 50--300 MHz. With a factor of 2000 increase in real-time spectral coverage, and lower system noise temperature, it will soon be possible to search a wide range of masses at 100 times this sensitivity. We describe the planned experiment in two phases: Phase-I will implement a wide band, 5-million channel, real-time FFT processor over the 30--300 MHz range with a back-end time-domain optimal filter to search for the predicted $Q\sim 10^6$ line using low-noise amplifiers. We have completed spot frequency calibrations using a biconical dipole antenna in a shielded room that extrapolate to a $5 \sigma$ limit of $\epsilon\sim 10^{-13}$ for the coupling from the dark field, per month of integration. A photographic technique for investigating water droplets of diameter less than 200 microns falling freely in air at temperatures between 0 C and -50 C has been devised and used to determine: (i) The shape of frozen droplets (2) The occurrence of collisions of partly frozen or of frozen and liquid droplets (3) The statistics on the freezing temperatures of individual free-falling droplets A considerable number of droplets were found to have a nonspherical shape after freezing because of various protuberances and frost growth, and droplet aggregates formed by collision. The observed frequency of collision of partly frozen droplets showed good order of magnitude agreement with the frequency computed from theoretical collection efficiencies. The freezing temperature statistics indicated a general similarity of the data to those obtained for droplets frozen on a metallic surface in previous experiments.

A flight instrument that uses electric means for measuring the droplet-size distribution in above-freezing clouds has been devised and given preliminary evaluation in flight. An electric charge is placed on the droplets and they are separated aerodynamically according to their mass. Because the charge placed on the droplets is a. function of the droplet size, the size spectrum can 'be determined by measurement of the charge deposited on cylinders of several different sizes placed to intercept the charged droplets. An expression for the rate of charge acquisition by a water droplet in a field of coronal discharge is derived. The results obtained in flight with an instrument based on the method described indicate that continuous records of droplet-size spectrum variations in clouds can be obtained. The experimental instrument was used to evaluate the method and was not refined to the extent necessary for obtaining conclusive meteorological data. The desirable features of an instrument based on the method described are (i) The instrument can be used in clouds with temperatures above freezing; (2) the size and the shape of the cylinders do not change during the exposure time; (3) the readings are instantaneous and continuous; (4) the available sensitivity permits the study of variations in cloud structures of less than 200 feet in extent.

A cascade impactor, an instrument for obtaining: the size distribution of droplets borne in a low-velocity air stream, was adapted for flight cloud droplet-size studies. The air containing the droplets was slowed down from flight speed by a diffuser to the inlet-air velocity of the impactor. The droplets that enter the impactor impinge on four slides coated with magnesium oxide. Each slide catches a different size range. The relation between the size of droplet impressions and the droplet size was evaluated so that the droplet-size distributions may be found from these slides. The magnesium oxide coating provides a permanent record. of the droplet impression that is not affected by droplet evaporation after the. droplets have impinged.
