We investigated structural changes, phase diagram, and vibrational properties of hydrogen hydrate in filled-ice phase C2 by using first principles molecular dynamics simulation. It was found that the experimentally reported 'cubic' structure is unstable at low temperature and/or high pressure. The 'cubic' structure reflects the symmetry at high (room) temperature where the hydrogen bond network is disordered and the hydrogen molecules are orientationally disordered due to thermal rotation. In this sense, the 'cubic' symmetry would definitely be lowered at low temperature where the hydrogen bond network and the hydrogen molecules are expected to be ordered. At room temperature and below 30 GPa, it is the thermal effects that play an essential role in stabilizing the structure in 'cubic' symmetry. Above 60 GPa, the hydrogen bonds in the framework would be symmetrized and the hydrogen bond order-disorder transition would disappear. These results also suggest the phase behavior of other filled-ice hydrates. In the case of rare gas hydrate, there would be no guest molecues rotation-nonrotation transition since the guest molecules keep their spherical symmetry at any temperature. On the contrary methane hydrate MH-III would show complex transitions due to the lower symmetry of the guest molecule. These results would encourage further experimental studies, especially NMR spectroscopy and neutron scattering, on the phases of filled-ice hydrates at high pressures and/or low temperatures., Comment: typos corrected

Due to the severe self-interaction errors associated with some density functional approximations, conventional density functionals often fail to dissociate the hemibonded structure of water dimer radical cation (H2O)2+ into the correct fragments: H2O and H2O+. Consequently, the binding energy of the hemibonded structure (H2O)2+ is not well-defined. For a comprehensive comparison of different functionals for this system, we propose three criteria: (i) The binding energies, (ii) the relative energies between the conformers of the water dimer radical cation, and (iii) the dissociation curves predicted by different functionals. The long-range corrected (LC) double-hybrid functional, omegaB97X-2(LP) [J.-D. Chai and M. Head-Gordon, J. Chem. Phys., 2009, 131, 174105.], is shown to perform reasonably well based on these three criteria. A combination of the extended Ice Rule of Pauling, Raman spectroscopy, and molecular dynamics calculations has enabled us to clarify the bonding origin of the anomalous volume expansion, Raman phonon relaxation, and the stiffness and fragility of H2O upon frozen. We found that the initially shorter-and-stronger intramolecular "H+/p-O2-" bond follows the regular rule of cooling-contraction while the initially longer-and-weaker intermolecular "O2- : H+/p" nonbond turns to be even longer yet stiffer in the "O2- : H+/p-O2-" hydrogen-bond of H2O upon frozen, as a consequence of the polarization and Coulomb repulsion between the unevenly-bounded bonding and nonbonding electron pairs. The elongation of the nonbond and the polarization of the nonbonding lone pair are responsible, respectively, for the volume expansion and the stiffness and the fragility of ice. Findings should form important impact to the understanding of the physical anomalies of H2O under other stimuli such as pressure and confinement.

With first-principles DFT calculations, the interaction between graphene and SiO2 surface has been analyzed by constructing the different configurations based on {\alpha}-quartz and cristobalite structures. The single layer graphene can stay stably on SiO2 surface is explained based on the general consideration of configuration structures of SiO2 surface. It is also found that the oxygen defect in SiO2 surface can shift the Fermi level of graphene down which opens out the mechanism of hole-doping effect of graphene absorbed on SiO2 surface observed in experiments., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

BN domains are easy to form in the basal plane of graphene due to phase separation. With first-principles DFT calculations, it is demonstrated theoretically that the band gap of graphene can be opened effectively around K (or K') points by doping the small BN domains. It is also found that the random doping with B or N is possible to open a small gap in the Dirac points, except for the modulation of Fermi level. The surface charge which belongs to the $\pi$ states near Dirac points is found to be redistributed locally. The charge redistribution is contributed to the change of localized potential due to the doping effects. This may be the reason that the energy states near Dirac points is just disturbed in the energy region [-0.4eV, 0.4eV] for the doping of BN domain. Thus, we suggest that the band opening induced by the doped BN domain is due to the breaking of localized symmetry of the potential. Doping graphene with BN domains is an effective method to open a band gap with quasi-linear dissipation near Dirac point., Comment: 7 page, 8 figures
