1. Safe Reinforcement Learning of Robot Trajectories in the Presence of Moving Obstacles

Abstract: In this paper, we present an approach for learning collision-free robot trajectories in the presence of moving obstacles. As a first step, we train a backup policy to generate evasive movements from arbitrary initial robot states using model-free reinforcement learning. When learning policies for other tasks, the backup policy can be used to estimate the potential risk of a collision and to offer an alternative action if the estimated risk is considered too high. No matter which action is selected, our action space ensures that the kinematic limits of the robot joints are not violated. We analyze and evaluate two different methods for estimating the risk of a collision. A physics simulation performed in the background is computationally expensive but provides the best results in deterministic environments. If a data-based risk estimator is used instead, the computational effort is significantly reduced, but an additional source of error is introduced. For evaluation, we successfully learn a reaching task and a basketball task while keeping the risk of collisions low. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach for deterministic and stochastic environments, including a human-robot scenario and a ball environment, where no state can be considered permanently safe. 2. HIRO: Heuristics Informed Robot Online Path Planning Using Pre-computed Deterministic Roadmaps

Abstract: With the goal of efficiently computing collision-free robot motion trajectories in dynamically changing environments, we present results of a novel method for Heuristics Informed Robot Online Path Planning (HIRO). Dividing robot environments into static and dynamic elements, we use the static part for initializing a deterministic roadmap, which provides a lower bound of the final path cost as informed heuristics for fast path-finding. These heuristics guide a search tree to explore the roadmap during runtime. The search tree examines the edges using a fuzzy collision checking concerning the dynamic environment. Finally, the heuristics tree exploits knowledge fed back from the fuzzy collision checking module and updates the lower bound for the path cost. As we demonstrate in real-world experiments, the closed-loop formed by these three components significantly accelerates the planning procedure. An additional backtracking step ensures the feasibility of the resulting paths. Experiments in simulation and the real world show that HIRO can find collision-free paths considerably faster than baseline methods with and without prior knowledge of the environment.

3. Planning with Learned Subgoals Selected by Temporal Information

Abstract: Path planning in a changing environment is a challenging task in robotics, as moving objects impose time-dependent constraints. Recent planning methods primarily focus on the spatial aspects, lacking the capability to directly incorporate time constraints. In this paper, we propose a method that leverages a generative model to decompose a complex planning problem into small manageable ones by incrementally generating subgoals given the current planning context. Then, we take into account the temporal information and use learned time estimators based on different statistic distributions to examine and select the generated subgoal candidates. Experiments show that planning from the current robot state to the selected subgoal can satisfy the given time-dependent constraints while being goal-oriented.

4. Structural Manipulation of Spin Excitations in a Molecular Junction

Abstract: Single metallocene molecules act as sensitive spin detectors when decorating the probe of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). However, the impact of the atomic-scale electrode details on the molecular spin state has remained elusive to date. Here, a nickelocene (Nc) STM junction is manipulated in an atom-wise manner showing clearly the dependence of the spin excitation spectrum on the anchoring of Nc to Cu(111), a Cu monomer and trimer. Moreover, while the spin state of the same Nc tip is a triplet with tunable spin excitation energies upon contacting the surface, it transitions to a Kondo-screened doublet on a Cu atom. Notably, the non-trivial magnetic exchange interaction of the molecular spin with the electron continuum of the substrate determines the spectral line shape of the spin excitations.

Abstract: In 2017 Day et al. introduced the notion of locality as a structural complexity-measure for patterns in the field of pattern matching established by Angluin in 1980. In 2019 Casel et al. showed that determining the locality of an arbitrary pattern is NP-complete. Inspired by hierarchical clustering, we extend the notion to coloured graphs, i.e., given a coloured graph determine an enumeration of the colours such that colouring the graph stepwise according to the enumeration leads to as few clusters as possible. Next to first theoretical results on graph classes, we propose a priority search algorithm to compute the $k$-locality of a graph. The algorithm is optimal in the number of marking prefix expansions, and is faster by orders of magnitude than an exhaustive search. Finally, we perform a case study on a DBLP subgraph to demonstrate the potential of $k$-locality for knowledge discovery.

6. Jerk-limited Traversal of One-dimensional Paths and its Application to Multi-dimensional Path Tracking

Abstract: In this paper, we present an iterative method to quickly traverse multi-dimensional paths considering jerk constraints. As a first step, we analyze the traversal of each individual path dimension. We derive a range of feasible target accelerations for each intermediate waypoint of a one-dimensional path using a binary search algorithm. Computing a trajectory from waypoint to waypoint leads to the fastest progress on the path when selecting the highest feasible target acceleration. Similarly, it is possible to calculate a trajectory that leads to minimum progress along the path. This insight allows us to control the traversal of a one-dimensional path in such a way that a reference path length of a multi-dimensional path is approximately tracked over time. In order to improve the tracking accuracy, we propose an iterative scheme to adjust the temporal course of the selected reference path length. More precisely, the temporal region causing the largest position deviation is identified and updated at each iteration. In our evaluation, we thoroughly analyze the performance of our method using seven-dimensional reference paths with different path characteristics. 7. Characterizing hydrogel behavior under compression with gel-freezing osmometry

Abstract: Hydrogels are particularly versatile materials that are widely found in both Nature and industry. One key reason for this versatility is their high water content, which lets them dramatically change their volume and many of their mechanical properties -- often by orders of magnitude -- as they swell and dry out. Currently, we lack techniques that can precisely characterize how these properties change with water content. To overcome this challenge, here we develop Gel-Freezing Osmometry (GelFrO): an extension of freezing-point osmometry. We show how GelFrO can measure a hydrogel's mechanical response to compression and osmotic pressure, while only using small, $O(100\mu$L$)$ samples. Because the technique allows measurement of properties over an unusually wide range of water contents, it allows us to accurately test theoretical predictions. We find simple, power-law behavior for both mechanical response to compression, and osmotic pressure, while these are not well-captured by classical Flory-Huggins theory. We interpret this power-law behavior as a hallmark of a microscopic fractal structure of the gel's polymer network, and propose a simple way to connect the gel's fractal dimension to its mechanical and osmotic properties. This connection is supported by observations of hydrogel microstructures using small-angle x-ray scattering. Finally, our results motivate us to propose an updated constitutive model describing hydrogel swelling, and mechanical response.

Abstract: Using novel metallic magnetic calorimeter detectors at the CRYRING@ESR, we recorded X-ray spectra of stored and electron cooled helium-like uranium (U$^{90+}$) with an unmatched spectral resolution of close to 90 eV. This allowed for an accurate determination of the energies of all four components of the K$\alpha$ transitions in U$^{90+}$. We find good agreement with state-of-the-art bound-state QED calculations for the strong-field regime. Our results do not support any systematic deviation between experiment and theory in helium-like systems, the presence of which was subject of intense debates in recent years.

9. Scanning tunneling microscopy using CO-terminated probes with tilted and straight geometries

Abstract: Scanning tunneling microscopy using a CO-functionalized tip is combined with simulations to explore the impact of the CO tilt angle on topographies of a single Cu atom and CO molecule adsorbed on Cu(111). Images of the Cu atom acquired with varying tip tilt angles and sample voltages are reproduced by the calculations. The agreement between measured and simulated data allows to unveil the tip-orbital composition of the tunneling current, which highlights the role of the different p-orbitals of the CO tip. Microscope data of adsorbed CO and their dependence on voltage and probe-surface distance are captured for the nontilted junction geometry and in the limit of weak tip-surface interaction assuming sufficiently large tip-sample separations., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review B

10. Assessing the impact of weather-induced uncertainties in large-scale electricity systems

Abstract: The future energy system will largely depend on volatile renewable energy sources and temperature-dependent loads, which makes the weather a central influencing factor. This article presents a novel approach for simulating weather scenarios for robust large-scale power system analysis. By applying different signal analysis methods, historical weather data is decomposed into its spectral components, processed appropriately, and then used to generate random, self-consistent weather data. In this process, any weather parameters of different locations can be considered, while their respective dependencies are mapped. The added value is demonstrated by coupling with a state-of-the-art large-scale energy system model for Europe. It is shown that the integrated consideration of different weather influences allows a quantification of the range of fluctuation of various parameters - such as the feed-in of wind and solar power - and thus provides the basis for future resilient grid planning approaches.

11. A global evidence map of human well-being and biodiversity co-benefits and trade-offs of natural climate solutions

Abstract: Natural climate solutions (NCS) are critical for mitigating climate change through ecosystem-based carbon removal and emissions reductions. NCS implementation can also generate biodiversity and human well-being co-benefits and trade-offs ("NCS co-impacts"), but the volume of evidence on NCS co-impacts has grown rapidly across disciplines, is poorly understood, and remains to be systematically collated and synthesized. A global evidence map of NCS co-impacts would overcome key barriers to NCS implementation by providing relevant information on co-benefits and trade-offs where carbon mitigation potential alone does not justify NCS projects. We employ large language models to assess over two million articles, finding 257,266 relevant articles on NCS co-impacts. We analyze this large and dispersed body of literature using innovative machine learning methods to extract relevant data (e.g., study location, species, and other key variables), and create a global evidence map on NCS co-impacts. Evidence on NCS co-impacts has grown approximately ten-fold in three decades, although some of the most abundant evidence is associated with pathways that have less mitigation potential. We find that studies often examine multiple NCS pathways, indicating natural NCS pathway complements, and each NCS is often associated with two or more coimpacts. Finally, NCS co-impacts evidence and priority areas for NCS are often mismatched--some countries with high mitigation potential from NCS have few published studies on the broader co-impacts of NCS implementation. 12. Reinforcement Learning for Safety Testing: Lessons from A Mobile Robot Case Study

Abstract: Safety-critical robot systems need thorough testing to expose design flaws and software bugs which could endanger humans. Testing in simulation is becoming increasingly popular, as it can be applied early in the development process and does not endanger any real-world operators. However, not all safety-critical flaws become immediately observable in simulation. Some may only become observable under certain critical conditions. If these conditions are not covered, safety flaws may remain undetected. Creating critical tests is therefore crucial. In recent years, there has been a trend towards using Reinforcement Learning (RL) for this purpose. Guided by domain-specific reward functions, RL algorithms are used to learn critical test strategies. This paper presents a case study in which the collision avoidance behavior of a mobile robot is subjected to RL-based testing. The study confirms prior research which shows that RL can be an effective testing tool. However, the study also highlights certain challenges associated with RL-based testing, namely (i) a possible lack of diversity in test conditions and (ii) the phenomenon of reward hacking where the RL agent behaves in undesired ways due to a misalignment of reward and test specification. The challenges are illustrated with data and examples from the experiments, and possible mitigation strategies are discussed.

13. Modeling and Contribution of Flexible Heating Systems for Transmission Grid Congestion Management

Abstract: The large-scale integration of flexible heating systems in the European electricity market leads to a substantial increase of transportation requirements and consecutively grid congestions in the continental transmission grid. Novel model formulations for the grid-aware operation of both individual small-scale heat pumps and large-scale power-to-heat (PtH) units located in district heating networks are presented. The functionality of the models and the contribution of flexible heating systems for transmission grid congestion management is evaluated by running simulations for the target year 2035 for the German transmission grid. The findings show a decrease in annual conventional redispatch volumes and renewable energy sources (RES) curtailment resulting in cost savings of approximately 6 % through the integration of flexible heating systems in the grid congestion management scheme. The analysis suggests that especially large-scale PtH units in combination with thermal energy storages can contribute significantly to the alleviation of grid congestion and foster RES integration.

14. Comparison of theory and experiment for radiative characteristics in neutral thulium

Abstract: Intensities in Tm I emission series originating from a common upper level are measured using a Fourier transform spectrometer. The derived relative transition probabilities within each series are compared to the theoretical predictions obtained from large-scale calculations that combine configuration interaction with many-body perturbation theory. Moreover, the Tm I spectrum recorded in an external magnetic field is analyzed. Our theoretical results well describe the current measurements and show no more than a two-fold difference from previous experimental data on absolute transition probabilities. Additionally, Land\'e g factors, hyperfine structure constants, and atomic electric quadrupole moments for several levels of interest are computed and compared to experimental observations, where available.

15. In-Context Explainers: Harnessing LLMs for Explaining Black Box Models

Abstract: Recent advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated exceptional capabilities in complex tasks like machine translation, commonsense reasoning, and language understanding. One of the primary reasons for the adaptability of LLMs in such diverse tasks is their in-context learning (ICL) capability, which allows them to perform well on new tasks by simply using a few task samples in the prompt. Despite their effectiveness in enhancing the performance of LLMs on diverse language and tabular tasks, these methods have not been thoroughly explored for their potential to generate post hoc explanations. In this work, we carry out one of the first explorations to analyze the effectiveness of LLMs in explaining other complex predictive models using ICL. To this end, we propose a novel framework, In-Context Explainers, comprising of three novel approaches that exploit the ICL capabilities of LLMs to explain the predictions made by other predictive models. We conduct extensive analysis with these approaches on real-world tabular and text datasets and demonstrate that LLMs are capable of explaining other predictive models similar to state-of-the-art post hoc explainers, opening up promising avenues for future research into LLM-based post hoc explanations of complex predictive models.

16. Local Volume Concentration, Packing Domains and Scaling Properties of Chromatin

Abstract: We propose the Self Returning Excluded Volume (SR-EV) model for the structure of chromatin based on stochastic rules and physical interactions. The SR-EV rules of return generate conformationally-defined domains observed by single cell imaging techniques. From nucleosome to chromosome scales, the model captures the overall chromatin organization as a corrugated system, with dense and dilute regions alternating in a manner that resembles the mixing of two disordered bi-continuous phases. This particular organizational topology is a consequence of the multiplicity of interactions and processes occurring in the nuclei, and mimicked by the proposed return rules. Single configuration properties and ensemble averages show a robust agreement between theoretical and experimental results including chromatin volume concentration, contact probability, packing domain identification and size characterization, and packing scaling behavior. Model and experimental results suggest that there is an inherent chromatin organization regardless of the cell character and resistant to an external forcing such as Rad21 degradation.

17. Uncertainty-aware Risk Assessment of Robotic Systems via Importance Sampling

Abstract: In this paper, we introduce a probabilistic approach to risk assessment of robot systems by focusing on the impact of uncertainties. While various approaches to identifying systematic hazards (e.g., bugs, design flaws, etc.) can be found in current literature, little attention has been devoted to evaluating risks in robot systems in a probabilistic manner. Existing methods rely on discrete notions for dangerous events and assume that the consequences of these can be described by simple logical operations. In this work, we consider measurement uncertainties as one main contributor to the evolvement of risks. Specifically, we study the impact of temporal and spatial uncertainties on the occurrence probability of dangerous failures, thereby deriving an approach for an uncertainty-aware risk assessment. Secondly, we introduce a method to improve the statistical significance of our results: While the rare occurrence of hazardous events makes it challenging to draw conclusions with reliable accuracy, we show that importance sampling -- a technique that successively generates samples in regions with sparse probability densities -- allows for overcoming this issue. We demonstrate the validity of our novel uncertainty-aware risk assessment method in three simulation scenarios from the domain of human-robot collaboration. 18. Inferring microbial interactions with their environment from genomic and metagenomic data

Abstract: Microbial communities assemble through a complex set of interactions between microbes and their environment, and the resulting metabolic impact on the host ecosystem can be profound. Microbial activity is known to impact human health, plant growth, water quality, and soil carbon storage which has lead to the development of many approaches and products meant to manipulate the microbiome. In order to understand, predict, and improve microbial community engineering, genome-scale modeling techniques have been developed to translate genomic data into inferred microbial dynamics. However, these techniques rely heavily on simulation to draw conclusions which may vary with unknown parameters or initial conditions, rather than more robust qualitative analysis. To better understand microbial community dynamics using genome-scale modeling, we provide a tool to investigate the network of interactions between microbes and environmental metabolites over time. Using our previously developed algorithm for simulating microbial communities from genome-scale metabolic models (GSMs), we infer the set of microbe-metabolite interactions within a microbial community in a particular environment. Abstract: Mobility data captures the locations of moving objects such as humans, animals, and cars. With the availability of GPS-equipped mobile devices and other inexpensive location-tracking technologies, mobility data is collected ubiquitously. In recent years, the use of mobility data has demonstrated significant impact in various domains including traffic management, urban planning, and health sciences. In this paper, we present the emerging domain of mobility data science. Towards a unified approach to mobility data science, we envision a pipeline having the following components: mobility data collection, cleaning, analysis, management, and privacy. Abstract: We compare games under delayed control and delay games, two types of infinite games modelling asynchronicity in reactive synthesis. In games under delayed control both players suffer from partial informedness due to symmetrically delayed communication, while in delay games, the protagonist has to grant lookahead to the alter player. Our first main result, the interreducibility of the existence of sure winning strategies for the protagonist, allows to transfer known complexity results and bounds on the delay from delay games to games under delayed control, for which no such results had been known. We furthermore analyse existence of randomized strategies that win almost surely, where this correspondence between the two types of games breaks down. In this setting, some games surely won by the alter player in delay games can now be won almost surely by the protagonist in the corresponding game under delayed control, showing that it indeed makes a difference whether the protagonist has to grant lookahead or both players suffer from partial informedness. These results get even more pronounced when we finally address the quantitative goal of winning with a probability in $[0,1]$. We show that for any rational threshold $\theta \in [0,1]$ there is a game that can be won by the protagonist with exactly probability $\theta$ under delayed control, while being surely won by alter in the delay game setting. Abstract: The internal structure of adhesive tapes determines the effective mechanical properties. This holds true especially for blended systems, here consisting of acrylate and rubber phases. In this note, we propose a lattice-based model to study numerically the formation of internal morphologies within a four-component mixture (of discrete particles) where the solvent components evaporate. Mimicking numerically the interaction between rubber, acrylate, and two different types of solvents, relevant for the technology of adhesive tapes, we aim to obtain realistic distributions of rubber ball-shaped morphologies -- they play a key role in the overall functionality of those special adhesives. Abstract: The Internet of Production (IoP) leverages concepts such as digital shadows, data lakes, and a World Wide Lab (WWL) to advance today's production. Consequently, it requires a technical infrastructure that can support the agile deployment of these concepts and corresponding high-level applications, which, e.g., demand the processing of massive data in motion and at rest. As such, key research aspects are the support for low-latency control loops, concepts on scalable data stream processing, deployable information security, and semantically rich and efficient long-term storage. In particular, such an infrastructure cannot continue to be limited to machines and sensors, but additionally needs to encompass networked environments: production cells, edge computing, and location-independent cloud infrastructures. Finally, in light of the envisioned WWL, i.e., the interconnection of production sites, the technical infrastructure must be advanced to support secure and privacy-preserving industrial collaboration. To evolve today's production sites and lay the infrastructural foundation for the IoP, we identify five broad streams of research: (1) adapting data and stream processing to heterogeneous data from distributed sources, (2) ensuring data interoperability between systems and production sites, (3) exchanging and sharing data with different stakeholders, (4) network security approaches addressing the risks of increasing interconnectivity, and (5) security architectures to enable secure and privacy-preserving industrial collaboration. 23. GADformer: A Transparent Transformer Model for Group Anomaly Detection on Trajectories

Abstract: Group Anomaly Detection (GAD) identifies unusual pattern in groups where individual members might not be anomalous. This task is of major importance across multiple disciplines, in which also sequences like trajectories can be considered as a group. As groups become more diverse in heterogeneity and size, detecting group anomalies becomes challenging, especially without supervision. Though Recurrent Neural Networks are well established deep sequence models, their performance can decrease with increasing sequence lengths. Hence, this paper introduces GADformer, a BERT-based model for attention-driven GAD on trajectories in unsupervised and semi-supervised settings. We demonstrate how group anomalies can be detected by attention-based GAD. We also introduce the Block-Attention-anomaly-Score (BAS) to enhance model transparency by scoring attention patterns. In addition to that, synthetic trajectory generation allows various ablation studies. 24. Siloxane molecules: Nonlinear elastic behavior and fracture characteristics

Abstract: Fracture phenomena in soft materials span multiple length- and timescales. This poses a major challenge in computational modeling and predictive materials design. To pass quantitatively from molecular- to continuum scales, a precise representation of the material response at the molecular level is vital. Here, we derive the nonlinear elastic response and fracture characteristics of individual siloxane molecules using molecular dynamics (MD) studies. For short chains, we find deviations from classical scalings for both the effective stiffness and mean chain rupture times. A simple model of a non-uniform chain of Kuhn segments captures the observed effect and agrees well with MD data. We find that the dominating fracture mechanism depends on the applied force scale in a non-monotonic fashion. This analysis suggests that common polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) networks fail at crosslinking points. Our results can be readily lumped into coarse-grained models. Although focusing on PDMS as a model system, our study presents a general procedure to pass beyond the window of accessible rupture times in MD studies employing mean first passage time theory, which can be exploited for arbitrary molecular systems.

25. Fact or Artifact? Revise Layer-wise Relevance Propagation on various ANN Architectures

Abstract: Layer-wise relevance propagation (LRP) is a widely used and powerful technique to reveal insights into various artificial neural network (ANN) architectures. LRP is often used in the context of image classification. The aim is to understand, which parts of the input sample have highest relevance and hence most influence on the model prediction. Relevance can be traced back through the network to attribute a certain score to each input pixel. Relevance scores are then combined and displayed as heat maps and give humans an intuitive visual understanding of classification models. Opening the black box to understand the classification engine in great detail is essential for domain experts to gain trust in ANN models. However, there are pitfalls in terms of model-inherent artifacts included in the obtained relevance maps, that can easily be missed. But for a valid interpretation, these artifacts must not be ignored. Here, we apply and revise LRP on various ANN architectures trained as classifiers on geospatial and synthetic data. 26. Safety Evaluation of Robot Systems via Uncertainty Quantification

Abstract: In this paper, we present an approach for quantifying the propagated uncertainty of robot systems in an online and data-driven manner. Especially in Human-Robot Collaboration, keeping track of the safety compliance during run time is essential: Misclassifying dangerous situations as safe might result in severe accidents. According to official regulations (eg, ISO standards), safety in industrial robot applications depends on critical parameters, such as the distance and relative velocity between humans and robots. However, safety can only be assured given a measure for the reliability of these parameters. While different risk detection and mitigation approaches exist in literature, a measure that can be used to evaluate safety limits online, and succinctly implies whether a situation is safe or dangerous, is missing to date. Motivated by this, we introduce a generalizable method for calculating the propagated measurement uncertainty of arbitrary parameters, that captures the accumulated uncertainty originating from sensory devices and environmental disturbances of the system. To show that our approach delivers correct results, we perform validation experiments in simulation. Abstract: We present a measurement of the $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} \nu_{\ell}$ ($\ell=e,\mu$) branching ratio and of the CKM parameter $|V_{cb}|$ using signal decays accompanied by a fully reconstructed $B$ meson. The Belle II data set of electron-positron collisions at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance, corresponding to 189.3$\,$fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, is analyzed. With the Caprini-Lellouch-Neubert form factor parameterization, the parameters $\eta_{\rm EW} F(1) |V_{cb}|$ and $\rho^{2}$ are extracted, where $\eta_{\rm EW}$ is an electroweak correction, $F(1)$ is a normalization factor and $\rho^{2}$ is a form factor shape parameter. We reconstruct 516 signal decays and thereby obtain $\mathcal{B} (B^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} \nu_{\ell} ) = \left(5.27 \pm 0.22~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 0.38~\rm{\left(syst\right)}\right) \%$, $\eta_{EW} F(1) |V_{cb}| \times 10^{3} = 34.6 \pm 1.8~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 1.7~\rm{\left(syst\right)}$, and $\rho^{2} = 0.94 \pm 0.18~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 0.11~\rm{\left(syst\right)}$.

28. Increase in rod diffusivity emerges even in Markovian nature

Abstract: Rod-shaped particles embedded in certain matrices have been reported to exhibit an increase in their center of mass diffusivity upon increasing the matrix density. This increase has been considered to be caused by a kinetic constraint in analogy with tube models. We investigate a mobile rod-like particle in a sea of immobile point obstacles using a kinetic Monte Carlo scheme equipped with a Markovian process, that generates gas-like collision statistics, so that such kinetic constraints do essentially not exist. Even in such a system, provided the particle's aspect ratio exceeds a threshold value of about 24, the unusual increase in the rod diffusivity emerges. This result implies that the kinetic constraint is not a necessary condition for the increase in the diffusivity., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

29. CoMadOut -- A Robust Outlier Detection Algorithm based on CoMAD

Abstract: Unsupervised learning methods are well established in the area of anomaly detection and achieve state of the art performances on outlier datasets. Outliers play a significant role, since they bear the potential to distort the predictions of a machine learning algorithm on a given dataset. Especially among PCA-based methods, outliers have an additional destructive potential regarding the result: they may not only distort the orientation and translation of the principal components, they also make it more complicated to detect outliers. To address this problem, we propose the robust outlier detection algorithm CoMadOut, which satisfies two required properties: (1) being robust towards outliers and (2) detecting them. Our CoMadOut outlier detection variants using comedian PCA define, dependent on its variant, an inlier region with a robust noise margin by measures of in-distribution (variant CMO) and optimized scores by measures of out-of-distribution (variants CMO*), e.g. kurtosis-weighting by CMO+k. These measures allow distribution based outlier scoring for each principal component, and thus, an appropriate alignment of the degree of outlierness between normal and abnormal instances. Experiments comparing CoMadOut with traditional, deep and other comparable robust outlier detection methods showed that the performance of the introduced CoMadOut approach is competitive to well established methods related to average precision (AP), area under the precision recall curve (AUPRC) and area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curve. Abstract: We report measurements of the ratios of branching fractions for $B \to \bar{D}^{(*)}\pi\ell^+\nu_\ell$ and $B \to \bar{D}^{(*)}\pi^+\pi^-\ell^+\nu_\ell$ relative to $B \to \bar{D}^*\ell^+\nu_\ell$ decays with $\ell = e, \mu$. These results are obtained from a data sample that contains $772 \times 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs collected near the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy $e^+e^-$ collider. Abstract: We present a determination of the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element $V_{cb}$ using $B\to D\ell\nu$ decays. The result is based on $e^+e^-\to\Upsilon(4S)$ data recorded by the Belle II detector corresponding to 189.2/fb of integrated luminosity. The semileptonic decays $B^0\to D^-(\to K^+\pi^-\pi^-)\ell^+\nu_\ell$ and $B^+\to\bar D^0(\to K^+\pi^-)\ell^+\nu_\ell$ are reconstructed, where $\ell$ is either electron or a muon. The second $B$ meson in the $\Upsilon(4S)$ event is not explicitly reconstructed. Using the diamond-frame method, we determine the $B$ meson four-momentum and thus the hadronic recoil. We extract the partial decay rates as functions of $w$ and perform a fit to the decay form-factor and the CKM parameter $|V_{cb}|$ using the BGL parameterization of the form factor and lattice QCD input from the FNAL/MILC and HPQCD collaborations. We obtain $\eta_{EW}|V_{cb}|=(38.53\pm 1.15)\times 10^{-3}$, where $\eta_{EW}$ is an electroweak correction, and the error accounts for theoretical and experimental sources of uncertainty., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

32. Layer-wise Relevance Propagation for Echo State Networks applied to Earth System Variability

Abstract: Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are known to be powerful methods for many hard problems (e.g. image classification, speech recognition or time series prediction). However, these models tend to produce black-box results and are often difficult to interpret. Layer-wise relevance propagation (LRP) is a widely used technique to understand how ANN models come to their conclusion and to understand what a model has learned. Here, we focus on Echo State Networks (ESNs) as a certain type of recurrent neural networks, also known as reservoir computing. ESNs are easy to train and only require a small number of trainable parameters, but are still black-box models. We show how LRP can be applied to ESNs in order to open the black-box. We also show how ESNs can be used not only for time series prediction but also for image classification: Our ESN model serves as a detector for El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) from sea surface temperature anomalies. ENSO is actually a well-known problem and has been extensively discussed before. Abstract: We measure the photon-energy spectrum in radiative bottom-meson ($B$) decays into inclusive final states involving a strange hadron and a photon. We use SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions corresponding to $189~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance by the Belle II experiment. The partner $B$ candidates are fully reconstructed using a large number of hadronic channels. The $B \rightarrow X_s \gamma$ partial branching fractions are measured as a function of photon energy in the signal $B$ meson rest frame in eight bins above $1.8~\mathrm{GeV}$. The background-subtracted signal yield for this photon energy region is $343 \pm 122$ events. Integrated branching fractions for three photon energy thresholds of $1.8~\mathrm{GeV}$, $2.0~\mathrm{GeV}$, and $2.1~\mathrm{GeV}$ are also reported, and found to be in agreement with world averages., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: We present an analysis of the charmless semileptonic decay $B^0\to\pi^- \ell^+ \nu_{\ell}$, where $\ell = e, \mu$, from 198.0 million pairs of $B\bar{B}$ mesons recorded by the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider. The decay is reconstructed without identifying the partner $B$ meson. The partial branching fractions are measured independently for $B^0\to\pi^- e^+ \nu_{e}$ and $B^0\to\pi^- \mu^+ \nu_{\mu}$ as functions of $q^{2}$ (momentum transfer squared), using 3896 $B^0\to\pi^- e^+ \nu_{e}$ and 5466 $B^0\to\pi^- \mu^+ \nu_{\mu}$ decays. The total branching fraction is found to be $(1.426 \pm 0.056 \pm 0.125) \times 10^{-4}$ for $B^0\to\pi^- \ell^+ \nu_{\ell}$ decays, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. By fitting the measured partial branching fractions as functions of $q^{2}$, together with constraints on the nonperturbative hadronic contribution from lattice QCD calculations, the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $V_{ub}$, $(3.55 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.17) \times 10^{-3}$, is extracted. Here, the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is theoretical.

Abstract: Safety critical systems are typically subjected to hazard analysis before commissioning to identify and analyse potentially hazardous system states that may arise during operation. Currently, hazard analysis is mainly based on human reasoning, past experiences, and simple tools such as checklists and spreadsheets. Increasing system complexity makes such approaches decreasingly suitable. Furthermore, testing-based hazard analysis is often not suitable due to high costs or dangers of physical faults. A remedy for this are model-based hazard analysis methods, which either rely on formal models or on simulation models, each with their own benefits and drawbacks. This paper proposes a two-layer approach that combines the benefits of exhaustive analysis using formal methods with detailed analysis using simulation. Unsafe behaviours that lead to unsafe states are first synthesised from a formal model of the system using Supervisory Control Theory. The result is then input to the simulation where detailed analyses using domain-specific risk metrics are performed. Abstract: We report a measurement of decay-time dependent $CP$-violating parameters in $B^0 \rightarrow K^0_S K^0_S K^0_S$ decays. We use $(198.0 \pm 3.0) \times 10^6\ B\overline{B}$ pairs collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The observed mixing-induced and direct $CP$ violation parameters are $\mathcal{S} = -1.86\ _{-0.46}^{+0.91}~{\rm (stat)} \pm 0.09~{\rm (syst)}$ and $\mathcal{A} = -0.22\ _{-0.27}^{+0.30}~{\rm (stat)} \pm 0.04~{\rm (syst)}$, respectively., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures; added a reference

Abstract: We determine the branching fractions ${\mathcal{B}}$ and $CP$ asymmetries ${\mathcal{A}_{{\it CP}}}$ of the decays $B^+ \rightarrow \pi^+ \pi^0$ and $B^+ \rightarrow K^+ \pi^0$. The results are based on a data set containing 198 million bottom-antibottom meson pairs corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $190\;\text{fb}^{-1}$ recorded by the Belle II detector in energy-asymmetric electron-positron collisions at the $\Upsilon (4S)$ resonance. We measure ${\mathcal{B}(B^+ \rightarrow \pi^+ \pi^0) = (6.12 \pm 0.53 \pm 0.53)\times 10^{-6}}$, ${\mathcal{B}(B^+ \rightarrow K^+ \pi^0) = (14.30 \pm 0.69 \pm 0.79)\times 10^{-6}}$, ${\mathcal{A}_{{\it CP}}(B^+ \rightarrow \pi^+ \pi^0) = -0.085 \pm 0.085 \pm 0.019}$, and ${\mathcal{A}_{{\it CP}}(B^+ \rightarrow K^+ \pi^0) = 0.014 \pm 0.047 \pm 0.010}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results improve a previous Belle II measurement and agree with the world averages.

38. An Integrated Solar Battery based on a Charge Storing 2D Carbon Nitride

Abstract: Solar batteries capable of harvesting sunlight and storing solar energy present an attractive vista to transition our energy infrastructure into a sustainable future. We present an integrated, fully earth-abundant solar battery design based on a bifunctional (light absorbing and charge storing) carbon nitride (K-PHI) photoanode, combined with all-organic hole transfer and storage materials. An internal ladder-type hole transfer cascade via a hole transport layer is used to shuttle the photogenerated holes to the PEDOT:PSS cathode. This concept differs from previous designs such as light-assisted battery schemes or photocapacitors and allows charging with only light or light-assisted during electrical charging and discharging, thus substantially increasing the energy output of the cell. Compared to battery operation in the dark, light-assisted (dis)charging increases charge output by 243 %, thereby increasing the electric coulombic efficiency from 68.3 % in the dark to 231 %, leading to energy improvements of 94.1 % under illumination., Comment: manuscript and supplementary information

39. Uncertainty Estimation for Safe Human-Robot Collaboration using Conservation Measures

Abstract: We present an online and data-driven uncertainty quantification method to enable the development of safe human-robot collaboration applications. Safety and risk assessment of systems are strongly correlated with the accuracy of measurements: Distinctive parameters are often not directly accessible via known models and must therefore be measured. However, measurements generally suffer from uncertainties due to the limited performance of sensors, even unknown environmental disturbances, or humans. In this work, we quantify these measurement uncertainties by making use of conservation measures which are quantitative, system specific properties that are constant over time, space, or other state space dimensions. The key idea of our method lies in the immediate data evaluation of incoming data during run-time referring to conservation equations. In particular, we estimate violations of a-priori known, domain specific conservation properties and consider them as the consequence of measurement uncertainties. We validate our method on a use case in the context of human-robot collaboration, thereby highlighting the importance of our contribution for the successful development of safe robot systems under real-world conditions, e.g., in industrial environments. In addition, we show how obtained uncertainty values can be directly mapped on arbitrary safety limits (e.g, ISO 13849) which allows to monitor the compliance with safety standards during run-time.

40. SpeedFolding: Learning Efficient Bimanual Folding of Garments

Abstract: Folding garments reliably and efficiently is a long standing challenge in robotic manipulation due to the complex dynamics and high dimensional configuration space of garments. An intuitive approach is to initially manipulate the garment to a canonical smooth configuration before folding. In this work, we develop SpeedFolding, a reliable and efficient bimanual system, which given user-defined instructions as folding lines, manipulates an initially crumpled garment to (1) a smoothed and (2) a folded configuration. Our primary contribution is a novel neural network architecture that is able to predict pairs of gripper poses to parameterize a diverse set of bimanual action primitives. After learning from 4300 human-annotated and self-supervised actions, the robot is able to fold garments from a random initial configuration in under 120s on average with a success rate of 93%. Real-world experiments show that the system is able to generalize to unseen garments of different color, shape, and stiffness. Abstract: String constraint solving, and the underlying theory of word equations, are highly interesting research topics both for practitioners and theoreticians working in the wide area of satisfiability modulo theories. As string constraint solving algorithms, a.k.a. string solvers, gained a more prominent role in the formal analysis of string-heavy programs, especially in connection to symbolic code execution and security protocol verification, we can witness an ever-growing number of benchmarks collecting string solving instances from real-world applications as well as an ever-growing need for more efficient and reliable solvers, especially for the aforementioned real-world instances. Thus, it seems that the string solving area (and the developers, theoreticians, and end-users active in it) could greatly benefit from a better understanding and processing of the existing string solving benchmarks. In this context, we propose SMTQUERY: an SMT-LIB benchmark analysis tool for string constraints. SMTQUERY is implemented in Python 3, and offers a collection of analysis and information extraction tools for a comprehensive data base of string benchmarks (presented in SMT-LIB format), based on an SQL-centred language called QLANG.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the branching fraction and longitudinal polarization of $B^0 \to \rho^+ \rho^-$ decays. SuperKEKB electron-positron collision data corresponding to 189~fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity and containing $198 \times 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs collected with the Belle II detector are used. We obtain \begin{eqnarray*} \mathcal{B}(B^0\to\rho^+\rho^-) &=& [2.67\pm0.28\,(\mathrm{stat})\,\pm0.28\,(\mathrm{syst})] \times 10^{-5}, \end{eqnarray*} \begin{eqnarray*} f_L &=& 0.956\pm0.035\,(\mathrm{stat})\,\pm 0.033\,(\mathrm{syst}), \end{eqnarray*} These results are consistent with previous measurements and can be used to constrain penguin pollution and to extract the quark-mixing angle $\phi_2$.

Abstract: We study $B^{+}\to \pi^{+}\pi^{0}\pi^{0}$ using 711 $\rm{fb}^{-1}$ of data collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. We measure an inclusive branching fraction of $(19.0\pm 1.5\pm 1.4)\times 10^{-6}$ and an inclusive \textit{CP} asymmetry of $(9.2 \pm 6.8 \pm 0.7)\%$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic; and a $B^{+}\to \rho(770)^{+}\pi^{0}$ branching fraction of $(11.2\pm 1.1\pm 0.9 ^{+0.8}_{-1.6})\times 10^{-6}$, where the third uncertainty is due to possible interference with $B^{+}\to \rho(1450)^{+}\pi^{0}$. We present the first observation of a structure around 1 GeV/$c^{2}$ in the $\pi^{0}\pi^{0}$ mass spectrum, with a significance of 6.4$\sigma$, and measure a branching fraction to be $(6.9\pm 0.9\pm 0.6)\times 10^{-6}$. 44. The Many Facets of Trust in AI: Formalizing the Relation Between Trust and Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency

Abstract: Efforts to promote fairness, accountability, and transparency are assumed to be critical in fostering Trust in AI (TAI), but extant literature is frustratingly vague regarding this 'trust'. The lack of exposition on trust itself suggests that trust is commonly understood, uncomplicated, or even uninteresting. But is it? Our analysis of TAI publications reveals numerous orientations which differ in terms of who is doing the trusting (agent), in what (object), on the basis of what (basis), in order to what (objective), and why (impact). We develop an ontology that encapsulates these key axes of difference to a) illuminate seeming inconsistencies across the literature and b) more effectively manage a dizzying number of TAI considerations. We then reflect this ontology through a corpus of publications exploring fairness, accountability, and transparency to examine the variety of ways that TAI is considered within and between these approaches to promoting trust.

Abstract: We report a study of $B \to J/\psi(\ell^{+}\ell^{-})K$ decays, where $\ell$ represents an electron or a muon, using $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance. The data were collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy collider during 2019-2021, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $189$ fb$^{-1}$. The measured quantities are the branching fractions (${\mathcal B}$) of the decay channels $B^{+} \to J/\psi(e^{+}e^{-})K^{+}$, $B^{+} \to J/\psi(\mu^{+}\mu^{-}) K^{+}$, $B^{0} \to J/\psi(e^{+}e^{-}) K^{0}_{S}$, and $B^{0} \to J/\psi(\mu^{+}\mu^{-})K^{0}_{S}$; the lepton-flavor-dependent isospin asymmetries for the electron [$A_{I}\left(B \to J/\psi(e^{+}e^{-}) K\right)$] and muon [$A_{I}\left(B \to J/\psi(\mu^{+} \mu^{-}) K\right)$] channels; and the ratios of branching fractions between the muon and electron channels for the charged [$R_{K^{+}}\left(J/\psi\right)$] and neutral kaon [$R_{K^{0}}\left(J/\psi\right)$] case. The measurements are consistent with the world-average values.

Abstract: This paper presents an approach for verifying the behaviour of nonlinear Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) found in cyber-physical safety-critical systems. We implement a dedicated interval constraint propagator for the sigmoid function into the SMT solver iSAT and compare this approach with a compositional approach encoding the sigmoid function by basic arithmetic features available in iSAT and an approximating approach. Our experimental results show that the dedicated and the compositional approach clearly outperform the approximating approach. 47. Enhancing cluster analysis via topological manifold learning

Abstract: We discuss topological aspects of cluster analysis and show that inferring the topological structure of a dataset before clustering it can considerably enhance cluster detection: theoretical arguments and empirical evidence show that clustering embedding vectors, representing the structure of a data manifold instead of the observed feature vectors themselves, is highly beneficial. To demonstrate, we combine manifold learning method UMAP for inferring the topological structure with density-based clustering method DBSCAN. Synthetic and real data results show that this both simplifies and improves clustering in a diverse set of low- and high-dimensional problems including clusters of varying density and/or entangled shapes. Our approach simplifies clustering because topological pre-processing consistently reduces parameter sensitivity of DBSCAN. Clustering the resulting embeddings with DBSCAN can then even outperform complex methods such as SPECTACL and ClusterGAN. Finally, our investigation suggests that the crucial issue in clustering does not appear to be the nominal dimension of the data or how many irrelevant features it contains, but rather how \textit{separable} the clusters are in the ambient observation space they are embedded in, which is usually the (high-dimensional) Euclidean space defined by the features of the data. Abstract: It is an elementary fact in the scientific literature that the Lipschitz norm of the realization function of a feedforward fully-connected rectified linear unit (ReLU) artificial neural network (ANN) can, up to a multiplicative constant, be bounded from above by sums of powers of the norm of the ANN parameter vector. Roughly speaking, in this work we reveal in the case of shallow ANNs that the converse inequality is also true. More formally, we prove that the norm of the equivalence class of ANN parameter vectors with the same realization function is, up to a multiplicative constant, bounded from above by the sum of powers of the Lipschitz norm of the ANN realization function (with the exponents $ 1/2 $ and $ 1 $). Moreover, we prove that this upper bound only holds when employing the Lipschitz norm but does neither hold for H\"older norms nor for Sobolev-Slobodeckij norms. Abstract: We report on a Belle II measurement of the branching fraction ($\mathcal{B}$), longitudinal polarization fraction ($f_L$), and CP asymmetry ($\mathcal{A}_{CP}$) of $B^+\to \rho^+\rho^0$ decays. We reconstruct $B^+\to \rho^+(\to \pi^+\pi^0(\to \gamma\gamma))\rho^0(\to \pi^+\pi^-)$ decays in a sample of SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions collected by the Belle II experiment in 2019, 2020, and 2021 at the $\Upsilon$(4S) resonance and corresponding to 190 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We fit the distributions of the difference between expected and observed $B$ candidate energy, continuum-suppression discriminant, dipion masses, and decay angles of the selected samples, to determine a signal yield of $345 \pm 31$ events. The signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to \rho^+\rho^0) = [23.2^{+\ 2.2}_{-\ 2.1} (\rm stat) \pm 2.7 (\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $f_L = 0.943 ^{+\ 0.035}_{-\ 0.033} (\rm stat)\pm 0.027(\rm syst)$, and $\mathcal{A}_{CP}=-0.069 \pm 0.068(\rm stat) \pm 0.060 (\rm syst)$. The results agree with previous measurements. This is the first measurement of $\mathcal{A}_{CP}$ in $B^+\to \rho^+\rho^0$ decays reported by Belle II.

Abstract: We report the measurement of the branching fraction of the $B^0 \to K_S^0 \pi^0 \gamma$ decay in $e^+ e^- \to \Upsilon(4S) \to B \overline{B}$ data recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy collider and corresponding to 190 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The signal yield is measured to be $121\pm 29\,\hbox{(stat.)}$, leading to the branching fraction ${\cal B}\left(B^0 \to K_S^0 \pi^0 \gamma\right) = \left(7.3 \pm 1.8\,\hbox{(stat.)} \pm 1.0\,\hbox{(syst.)} \right)\times 10^{-6}$, which agrees with the known value., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures
