The development of BiPo detectors is dedicated to the measurement of extremely high radiopurity in $^{208}$Tl and $^{214}$Bi for the SuperNEMO double beta decay source foils. A modular prototype, called BiPo-1, with 0.8 $m^2$ of sensitive surface area, has been running in the Modane Underground Laboratory since February, 2008. The goal of BiPo-1 is to measure the different components of the background and in particular the surface radiopurity of the plastic scintillators that make up the detector. The first phase of data collection has been dedicated to the measurement of the radiopurity in $^{208}$Tl. After more than one year of background measurement, a surface activity of the scintillators of $\mathcal{A}$($^{208}$Tl) $=$ 1.5 $\mu$Bq/m$^2$ is reported here. Given this level of background, a larger BiPo detector having 12 m$^2$ of active surface area, is able to qualify the radiopurity of the SuperNEMO selenium double beta decay foils with the required sensitivity of $\mathcal{A}$($^{208}$Tl) $<$ 2 $\mu$Bq/kg (90% C.L.) with a six month measurement., Comment: 24 pages, submitted to N.I.M. We have constructed a GEANT4-based detailed software model of photon transport in plastic scintillator blocks and have used it to study the NEMO-3 and SuperNEMO calorimeters employed in experiments designed to search for neutrinoless double beta decay. We compare our simulations to measurements using conversion electrons from a calibration source of $\rm ^{207}Bi$ and show that the agreement is improved if wavelength-dependent properties of the calorimeter are taken into account. Using a small amount of radioactive 111Cd atoms implanted in cerium lattice to probe the hyperfine electric quadrupole interaction, we have detected a quadrupole electron charge density component in alpha-Ce, which is absent in gamma-Ce. The appearance of the quadrupole density in alpha-Ce predicted by the quadrupole scenario of the phase transition demonstrates that the spacial symmetry is lowered at the gamma->alpha phase transition. This finding makes cerium the first element where the symmetry change is driven exclusively by the valence electron degrees of freedom while the atomic centers of mass (cerium nuclei) occupy the face centered cubic positions. In the double beta decay experiment NEMO~3 a precise knowledge of the background in the signal region is of outstanding importance. This article presents the methods used in NEMO~3 to evaluate the backgrounds resulting from most if not all possible origins. The quadrupole interaction at 111Cd impurity nuclei in the intermediate-valence compound YbAl2 has been measured under pressure up to 80 kbar by the TDPAC spectroscopy. It was found that the quadrupole frequency nQ measured on the 111Cd located at the Al sites in YbAl2, varies nonlinearly and increases by almost four times with the pressure increase up to 80 kbar. A linear correlation between the mean Yb valence, derived from Yb L3 OFY-XAS and RXES measurements, and the electric field gradient (the quadrupole frequency nQ=eQVzz/h) has been observed. The quadrupole frequencies on 111Cd in the GdAl2, YbAl3, TmAl3 and CaAl2 compounds have been measured, also. The possibility of determining the valence of Yb in the Yb compounds with p-metals from the relation nQ (u(P)) = n2 + (n3 - n2) u(P) has been considered.

We report the high-pressure synthesis of novel superconductor MgB$_2$ and some related compounds. The superconducting transition temperature of our samples of MgB$_2$ is equal to 36.6 K. The MgB$_2$ lattice parameters determined via X-ray diffraction are in excellent agreement with results of our ab initio calculations. The time-differential perturbed angular correlation (TDPAC) experiments demonstrate a small increase in quadrupole frequency of $^111$Cd probe with decreasing temperature from 293 to 4.2 K. The electric field gradient (EFG) at the B site calculated from first principles is in fair agreement with EFG obtained from $^11$B NMR spectra of MgB$_2$ reported in the literature. It is also very close to EFG found in our $^111$Cd TDPAC measurements, which suggests that the $^111$Cd probe substitutes for boron in the MgB$_2$ lattice., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures
