Search

Galaxy clusters are useful cosmological probes and interesting astrophysical laboratories. With growing cluster samples, a deeper understanding of the sample characteristics and improved control of systematics becomes more crucial. In this analysis we create a new and larger ACT-DR5-based thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect (tSZE) selected galaxy cluster catalog with improved control over sample purity and completeness. We employ the red sequence based cluster redshift and confirmation tool MCMF together with optical imaging data from the Legacy Survey DR-10 and infrared data from the WISE satellite to systematicallyidentify true clusters from a new cluster candidate detection run on the ACT-DR5 dataset. The resulting ACT-DR5 MCMF sample contains 6,237 clusters with a residual contamination of 10.7%. This is an increase of 51% compared to the previous ACT-DR5 cluster catalog, making this catalog the largest tSZE-selected cluster catalog to date. The z>1 subsample contains 703 clusters, three times more than in the previous ACT-DR5 catalog. Matching the ACT-DR5 MCMF cluster catalog with a deeper tSZE sample from SPTpol 500d allows us to confirm the completeness and purity of the new ACT-DR5 MCMF sample. Cross-matching to the two largest X-ray selected cluster samples, the all-sky RASS MCMF and the half-sky eRASS1, confirms the sample purity of the RASS MCMF sample and in the case of eRASS1 reveals that 43% of the matched clusters are designated in eRASS1 as X-ray point sources rather than clusters. Cross-correlating the ACT-DR5 MCMF cluster catalog with ACT-DR6 lensing maps results in a 16.4\sigma detection of CMB lensing around the clusters, corresponding to the strongest signal found so far for a galaxy cluster sample. Repeating the measurement for the z>1 cluster subsample yields a significance of 4.3\sigma, which is the strongest CMB lensing detection in a z>1 cluster sample to date., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, submitted to A&A

Studies of surface brightness fluctuations in the intracluster medium (ICM) present an indirect probe of turbulent properties such as the turbulent velocities, injection scales, and the slope of the power spectrum of fluctuations towards smaller scales. With the advancement of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) studies and surveys relative to X-ray observations, we seek to investigate surface brightness fluctuations in a sample of SPT-SZ clusters which also have archival \textit{XMM-Newton} data. Here we present a pilot study of two typical clusters in that sample: SPT-CLJ0232-4421 and SPT-CLJ0638-5358. We infer injection scales larger than 500 kpc in both clusters and Mach numbers $\approx 0.5$ in SPT-CLJ0232-4421 and Mach numbers $\approx 0.6 - 1.6$ in SPT-CLJ0638-5358, which has a known shock. We find hydrostatic bias values for $M_{500}$ less than 0.2 for SPT-CLJ0232-4421 and less than 0.1 for SPT-CLJ0638-5358. These results show the importance to assess its quantitative values via a detailed multiwavelength approach and suggest that the drivers of turbulence may occur at quite larger scales., Comment: Accepted to ApJ; 34 pages, 23 figures, and 14 tables

Aims. We aim to characterize the gas properties in the cluster outskirts ($R_{500}R_{200}$) of the A3391/95 system and to compare them to predictions. Methods. We performed X-ray image and spectral analyses using the eROSITA PV data to assess the gas morphology and properties in the outskirts and the filaments in the directions of the previously detected Northern and Southern Filament of the A3391/95 system. We took particular care of the foreground. Results. In the filament-facing outskirts of A3391 and the Northern Clump, we find higher temperatures than typical cluster outskirts profiles, with a significance of $1.6-2.8\sigma$, suggesting heating due to their connections with the filaments. We confirm SB excess in the profiles of the Northern, Eastern, and Southern Filaments. From spectral analysis, we detect hot gas of ~1 keV for the Northern and Southern Filaments. The filament metallicities are below 10% solar metallicity and the $n_e$ range between 2.6 and $6.3\times10^{-5}~\mathrm{cm^{-3}}$. The characteristic properties of the Little Southern Clump (~1.5$R_{200}$ from A3395S in the Southern Filament) suggest that it is a small galaxy group. Excluding the LSC from the analysis of the Southern Filament decreases the gas density by 30%. This shows the importance of taking into account any clumps to avoid overestimation of the gas measurement in the outskirts and filament regions. Conclusions. The $n_e$ of the filaments are consistent with the WHIM properties as predicted by cosmological simulations, but the temperatures are higher, close to the upper WHIM temperature limit. As both filaments are short and located in a denser environment, stronger gravitational heating may be responsible for this temperature enhancement. We present the RASS-MCMF catalog of 8,465 X-ray selected galaxy clusters over 25,000 deg$^2$ of extragalactic sky. The accumulation of deep, multiband optical imaging data, the development of the Multi-Component Matched Filter cluster confirmation algorithm (MCMF), and the release of the DESI Legacy Survey DR10 catalog makes it possible -- for the first time, more than 30 years after the launch of the ROSAT X-ray satellite -- to identify the majority of the galaxy clusters detected in the second ROSAT All-Sky-Survey (RASS) source catalog (2RXS). The resulting 90\% pure RASS-MCMF catalog is the largest ICM-selected cluster sample to date. RASS-MCMF probes a large dynamic range in cluster mass spanning from galaxy groups to the most massive clusters. The cluster redshift distribution peaks at $z\sim0.1$ and extends to redshifts $z\sim1$. Out to $z\sim0.4$, the RASS-MCMF sample contains more clusters per redshift interval ($dN/dz$) than any other ICM-selected sample. In addition to the main sample, we present two subsamples with 6,924 and 5,516 clusters, exhibiting 95\% and 99\% purity, respectively.. We forecast the utility of the sample for a cluster cosmological study, using realistic mock catalogs that incorporate most observational effects, including the X-ray exposure time and background variations, the existence likelihood selection and the impact of the optical cleaning with the algorithm MCMF. Using realistic priors on the observable-mass relation parameters from a DES-based weak lensing analysis, we estimate the constraining power of the RASS-MCMF$\times$DES sample to be of 0.026, 0.033 and 0.15 ($1\sigma$) on the parameters $\Omega_\mathrm{m}$, $\sigma_8$ and $w$, respectively., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures, including comments from referee

We present the splashback radius measurements around the SRG/eROSITA eFEDS X-ray selected galaxy clusters by cross-correlating them with HSC S19A photometric galaxies. The X-ray selection is expected to be less affected by systematics related to projection that affects optical cluster finder algorithms. We use a nearly volume-limited sample of 109 galaxy clusters selected in 0.5-2.0 keV band having luminosity $L_X > 10^{43.5}\,{\rm erg s^{-1} h^{-2}}$ within the redshift $z<0.75$ and obtain measurements of the projected cross-correlation with a signal-to-noise of $17.43$. We model our measurements to infer a three-dimensional profile and find that the steepest slope is sharper than $-3$ and associate the location with the splashback radius. We infer the value of the 3D splashback radius $r_{\rm sp} = 1.45^{+0.30}_{-0.26}\,{\rm h^{-1} Mpc}$. We also measure the weak lensing signal of the galaxy clusters and obtain halo mass $\log[M_{\rm 200m}/{\rm h^{-1}M_\odot}] = 14.52 \pm 0.06$ using the HSC-S16A shape catalogue data at the median redshift $z=0.46$ of our cluster sample. We compare our $r_{\rm sp}$ values with the spherical overdensity boundary $r_{\rm 200m} = 1.75 \pm 0.08\,{\rm h^{-1} Mpc}$ based on the halo mass which is consistent within $1.2\sigma$ with the $\Lambda$CDM predictions. The eROSITA Final Equatorial-Depth Survey (eFEDS), executed during the performance verification phase of the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG)/eROSITA telescope, was completed in Nov. 2019. One of the science goals of this survey is to demonstrate the ability of eROSITA to detect samples of clusters and groups at the final depth of the eROSITA all-sky survey. Because of the sizeable point-spread function of eROSITA, high-redshift clusters of galaxies or compact nearby groups hosting bright active galactic nuclei (AGN) can be misclassified as point sources by the source detection algorithms. We present the first weak-lensing mass calibration and X-ray scaling relations of galaxy clusters and groups selected in the $eROSITA$ Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS) observed by Spectrum Roentgen Gamma/$eROSITA$ over a contiguous footprint with an area of $\approx140$ deg$^2$, using the three-year (S19A) weak-lensing data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program survey. In this work, a sample of $434$ optically confirmed galaxy clusters (and groups) at redshift $0.01\lesssim z \lesssim1.3$ with a median of $0.35$ is studied, of which $313$ systems are uniformly covered by the HSC survey to enable the extraction of the weak-lensing shear observable. In a Bayesian population modelling, we perform a blind analysis for the weak-lensing mass calibration by simultaneously modelling the observed count rate $\eta$ and the shear profile $g$ of individual clusters through the count rate-to-mass-and-redshift ($\eta$--$M_{500}$--$z$) and weak-lensing mass-to-mass-and-redshift ($M_{\mathrm{WL}}$--$M_{500}$--$z$) relations, respectively, while accounting for the bias in these observables using simulation-based calibrations. As a result, the count rate-inferred and lensing-calibrated cluster mass is obtained from the joint modelling of the scaling relations, as the ensemble mass spanning a range of $10^{13}h^{-1}M_{\odot}\lesssim M_{500}\lesssim10^{15} h^{-1}M_{\odot}$ with a median of $\approx10^{14} h^{-1}M_{\odot}$ for the eFEDS sample. With the mass calibration, we further model the X-ray observable-to-mass-and-redshift relations, including the rest-frame soft-band and bolometric luminosity ($L_{\mathrm{X}}$ and $L_{\mathrm{b}}$), the emission-weighted temperature $T_{\mathrm{X}}$, the mass of intra-cluster medium $M_{\mathrm{g}}$, and the mass proxy $Y_{\mathrm{X}}$, which is the product of $T_{\mathrm{X}}$ and $M_{\mathrm{g}}$. The eROSITA X-ray telescope on board the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) satellite has started to detect new X-ray sources over the full sky at an unprecedented rate. Understanding the performance and selection function of the source detection is important for the subsequent scientific analysis of the eROSITA catalogs. Through simulations, we test and optimize the eROSITA source detection procedures, and we characterize the detected catalog quantitatively. Taking the eROSITA Final Equatorial-Depth Survey (eFEDS) as an example, we ran extensive photon-event simulations based on our best knowledge of the instrument characteristics, the background spectrum, and the population of astronomical X-ray sources. We introduce a method of analyzing source detection completeness, purity, and efficiency based on the origin of each photon. According to the source detection efficiency measured in the simulation, we chose a two-pronged strategy to build eROSITA X-ray catalogs, creating a main catalog using only the most sensitive band (0.2-2.3 keV) and an independent hard-band-selected catalog using multiband detection in a range up to 5 keV. Because our mock data are highly representative of the real eFEDS data, we used the mock catalogs to measure the completeness and purity of the eFEDS catalogs as a function of multiple parameters, such as detection likelihood, flux, and luminosity. These measurements provide a basis for choosing the eFEDS catalog selection thresholds. The mock catalogs (available with this paper) can be used to construct the selection function of active galactic nuclei and galaxy clusters. Cosmological inference from cluster number counts is systematically limited by the accuracy of the mass calibration, i.e. the empirical determination of the mapping between cluster selection observables and halo mass. In this work we demonstrate a method to quantitatively determine the bias and uncertainties in weak-lensing mass calibration. To this end, we extract a library of projected matter density profiles from hydrodynamical simulations. Accounting for shear bias and noise, photometric redshift uncertainties, mis-centering, cluster member contamination, cluster morphological diversity, and line-of-sight projections, we produce a library of shear profiles. Fitting a one-parameter model to these profiles, we extract the so-called \emph{weak lensing mass} $M_\text{WL}$. Relating the weak-lensing mass to the halo mass from gravity-only simulations with the same initial conditions as the hydrodynamical simulations allows us to estimate the impact of hydrodynamical effects on cluster number counts experiments. Creating new shear libraries for $\sim$1000 different realizations of the systematics, provides a distribution of the parameters of the weak-lensing to halo mass relation, reflecting their systematic uncertainty. This result can be used as a prior for cosmological inference. We also discuss the impact of the inner fitting radius on the accuracy, and determine the outer fitting radius necessary to exclude the signal from neighboring structures. We present a weak lensing analysis for galaxy clusters from the APEX-SZ survey. For $39$ massive galaxy clusters that were observed via the Sunyaev-Zel\textquotesingle dovich effect (SZE) with the APEX telescope, we analyse deep optical imaging data from WFI(@2.2mMPG/ESO) and Suprime-Cam(@SUBARU) in three bands. The masses obtained in this study, including an X-ray selected subsample of 27 clusters, are optimised for and used in studies constraining the mass to observable scaling relations at fixed cosmology. A novel focus of our weak lensing analysis is the multi-colour background selection to suppress effects of cosmic variance on the redshift distribution of source galaxies. We investigate the effects of cluster member contamination through galaxy density, shear profile, and recovered concentrations. We quantify the impact of variance in source redshift distribution on the mass estimate by studying nine sub-fields of the COSMOS survey for different cluster redshift and manitude limits. We measure a standard deviation of $\sim 6$\% on the mean angular diameter distance ratio for a cluster at $z\!=\!0.45$ and shallow imaging data of $R\!\approx\!23$ mag. It falls to $\sim 1$\% for deep, $R=26$ mag, observations. This corresponds to 8.4\% and 1.4\% scatter in $M_{200}$. Our background selection reduces this scatter by $20-40$\%, depending on cluster redshift and imaging depth. We derived cluster masses with and without using a mass concentration relation and find consistent results, and concentrations consistent with the used mass-concentration relation., Comment: Accepted and published by MNRAS. The Planck satellite has detected cluster candidates via the Sunyaev Zel'dovich (SZ) effect, but the optical follow-up required to confirm these candidates is still incomplete, especially at high redshifts and for SZ detections at low significance. In this work we present our analysis of optical observations obtained for 32 Planck cluster candidates using ACAM on the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope. These cluster candidates were preselected using SDSS, WISE, and Pan-STARRS images to likely represent distant clusters at redshifts $z \gtrsim 0.7$. We obtain photometric redshift and richness estimates for all of the cluster candidates from a red-sequence analysis of $r$-, $i$-, and $z$-band imaging data. In addition, long-slit observations allow us to measure the redshifts of a subset of the clusters spectroscopically. The optical richness is often lower than expected from the inferred SZ mass when compared to scaling relations previously calibrated at low redshifts. This likely indicates the impact of Eddington bias and projection effects or noise-induced detections, especially at low SZ-significance. Thus, optical follow-up not only provides redshift measurements, but also an important independent verification method. We find that 18 (7) of the candidates at redshifts $z > 0.5$ ($z > 0.8$) are at least half as rich as expected from scaling relations, thereby clearly confirming these candidates as massive clusters. While the complex selection function of our sample due to our preselection hampers its use for cosmological studies, we do provide a validation of massive high-redshift clusters particularly suitable for further astrophysical investigations., Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures (+ 6 figures in the Appendix). We present the MARD-Y3 catalog of between 1086 and 2171 galaxy clusters (52\% and 65\% new) produced using multi-component matched filter (MCMF) followup in 5000\,deg$^2$ of DES-Y3 optical data of the $\sim$20000 overlapping 2RXS X-ray sources. Optical counterparts are identified as peaks in galaxy richness as a function of redshift along the line of sight toward each 2RXS source within a search region informed by an X-ray prior. All peaks are assigned a probability \fcont\ of being a random superposition. The clusters lie at $0.020.5$. Residual contamination is 2.6\% and 9.6\% for the cuts adopted here. For each cluster we present the optical center, redshift, rest frame X-ray luminosity, $M_{500}$ mass, coincidence with NWAY infrared sources and estimators of dynamical state. About 2\% of MARD-Y3 clusters have multiple possible counterparts, the photo-z's are high quality with $\sigma_{\Delta z/(1+z)}=0.0046$, and $\sim$1\% of clusters exhibit evidence of X-ray luminosity boosting from emission by cluster AGN. Comparison with other catalogs (MCXC, RM, SPT-SZ, Planck) is performed to test consistency of richness, luminosity and mass estimates. We measure the MARD-Y3 X-ray luminosity function and compare it to the expectation from a fiducial cosmology and externally calibrated luminosity- and richness-mass relations. Agreement is good, providing evidence that MARD-Y3 has low contamination and can be understood as a simple two step selection-- X-ray and then optical-- of an underlying cluster population described by the halo mass function., Comment: Version accepted for publication

We forecast the impact of weak lensing (WL) cluster mass calibration on the cosmological constraints from the X-ray selected galaxy cluster counts in the upcoming eROSITA survey. We employ a prototype cosmology pipeline to analyze mock cluster catalogs. Each cluster is sampled from the mass function in a fiducial cosmology and given an eROSITA count rate and redshift, where count rates are modeled using the eROSITA effective area, a typical exposure time, Poisson noise and the scatter and form of the observed X-ray luminosity-- and temperature--mass--redshift relations. A subset of clusters have mock shear profiles to mimic either those from DES and HSC or from the future Euclid and LSST surveys. Using a count rate selection, we generate a baseline cluster cosmology catalog that contains 13k clusters over 14,892~deg$^2$ of extragalactic sky. Low mass groups are excluded using raised count rate thresholds at low redshift. Forecast parameter uncertainties for $\Omega_\mathrm{M}$, $\sigma_8$ and $w$ are 0.023 (0.016; 0.014), 0.017 (0.012; 0.010), and 0.085 (0.074; 0.071), respectively, when adopting DES+HSC WL (Euclid; LSST), while marginalizing over the sum of the neutrino masses. A degeneracy between the distance--redshift relation and the parameters of the observable--mass scaling relation limits the impact of the WL calibration on the $w$ constraints, but with BAO measurements from DESI an improved determination of $w$ to 0.043 becomes possible. With Planck CMB priors, $\Omega_\text{M}$ ($\sigma_8$) can be determined to $0.005$ ($0.007$), and the summed neutrino mass limited to $\sum m_\nu < 0.241$ eV (at 95\%). If systematics on the group mass scale can be controlled, the eROSITA group and cluster sample with 43k objects and LSST WL could constrain $\Omega_\mathrm{M}$ and $\sigma_8$ to 0.007 and $w$ to 0.050., Comment: 28 pages, 13 figure

We present measurements of the X-ray observables of the intra-cluster medium (ICM), including luminosity $L_X$, ICM mass $M_{ICM}$, emission-weighted mean temperature $T_X$, and integrated pressure $Y_X$, that are derived from XMM-Newton X-ray observations of a Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect (SZE) selected sample of 59 galaxy clusters from the South Pole Telescope SPT-SZ survey that span the redshift range of $0.20 < z < 1.5$. We constrain the best-fit power law scaling relations between X-ray observables, redshift, and halo mass. The halo masses are estimated based on previously published SZE observable to mass scaling relations, calibrated using information that includes the halo mass function. Employing SZE-based masses in this sample enables us to constrain these scaling relations for massive galaxy clusters ($M_{500}\geq 3 \times10^{14}$ $M_\odot$) to the highest redshifts where these clusters exist without concern for X-ray selection biases. We find that the mass trends are steeper than self-similarity in all cases, and with $\geq 2.5{\sigma}$ significance in the case of $L_X$ and $M_{ICM}$. The redshift trends are consistent with the self-similar expectation, but the uncertainties remain large. Core-included scaling relations tend to have steeper mass trends for $L_X$. There is no convincing evidence for a redshift-dependent mass trend in any observable. The constraints on the amplitudes of the fitted scaling relations are currently limited by the systematic uncertainties on the SZE-based halo masses, however the redshift and mass trends are limited by the X-ray sample size and the measurement uncertainties of the X-ray observables., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 29 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables

Context: The galaxy cluster Abell S1101 (S1101 hereafter) deviates significantly from the X-ray luminosity versus velocity dispersion relation (L-sigma) of galaxy clusters in our previous study. Given reliable X-ray luminosity measurement combining XMM-Newton and ROSAT, this could most likely be caused by the bias in the velocity dispersion due to interlopers and low member statistic in the previous sample of member galaxies, which was solely based on 20 galaxy redshifts drawn from the literature. Aims: We intend to increase the galaxy member statistic to perform a precision measurement of the velocity dispersion and dynamical mass of S1101. We aim for a detailed substructure and dynamical state characterization of this cluster, and a comparison of mass estimates derived from (i) the velocity dispersion (M_vir), (ii) the caustic mass computation (M_caustic), and (iii) mass proxies from X-ray observations and the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect. Methods: We carried out new optical spectroscopic observations of the galaxies in this cluster field with VIMOS, obtaining a sample of ~60 member galaxies for S1101. We revised the cluster redshift and velocity dispersion measurements based on this sample and also applied the Dressler-Shectman substructure test. Results: The completeness of cluster members within r200 was significantly improved for this cluster. Tests for dynamical substructure did not show evidence for major disturbances or merging activities in S1101. We find good agreement between the dynamical cluster mass measurements and X-ray mass estimates which confirms the relaxed state of the cluster displayed in the 2D substructure test. The SZ mass proxy is slightly higher than the other estimates. Observations of the cosmic microwave background indicate that baryons account for 5% of the Universe's total energy content. In the local Universe, the census of all observed baryons falls short of this estimate by a factor of two. Cosmological simulations indicate that the missing baryons might not have condensed into virialized haloes, but reside throughout the filaments of the cosmic web (where matter density is larger than average) as a low-density plasma at temperatures of $10^5-10^7$ kelvin, known as the warm-hot intergalactic medium. There have been previous claims of the detection of warm baryons along the line of sight to distant blazars and of hot gas between interacting clusters. These observations were, however, unable to trace the large-scale filamentary structure, or to estimate the total amount of warm baryons in a representative volume of the Universe. Here we report X-ray observations of filamentary structures of gas at $10^7$ kelvin associated with the galaxy cluster Abell 2744. Previous observations of this cluster were unable to resolve and remove coincidental X-ray point sources. After subtracting these, we reveal hot gas structures that are coherent over scales of 8 mergaparsecs. The filaments coincide with over-densities of galaxies and dark matter, with 5-10% of their mass in baryonic gas. This gas has been heated up by the cluster's gravitational pull and is now feeding its core. Our findings strengthen evidence for a picture of the Universe in which a large fraction of the missing baryons reside in the filaments of the cosmic web., Comment: Published in the December 3 edition of Nature

We studied one of the most X-ray luminous cluster of galaxies in the REFLEX survey, RXC J1504.1-0248 (hereafter R1504; z=0.2153), using XMM-Newton X-ray imaging spectroscopy, VLT/VIMOS optical spectroscopy, and WFI optical imaging. The mass distributions were determined using both the so-called hydrostatic method with X-ray imaging spectroscopy and the dynamical method with optical spectroscopy, respectively, which yield M^{H.E.}_{500}=(5.81+/-0.49)*1.e14Msun and M^{caustic}_{500}=(4.17+/-0.42)*1e14Msun. According to recent calibrations, the richness derived mass estimates closely agree with the hydrostatic and dynamical mass estimates. The line-of-sight velocities of spectroscopic members reveal a group of galaxies with high-velocities (>1000 km/s) at a projected distance of about r^{H.E.}_{500}=(1.18+/-0.03) Mpc south-east of the cluster centroid, which is also indicated in the X-ray two-dimensional (2-D) temperature, density, entropy, and pressure maps. The dynamical mass estimate is 80% of the hydrostatic mass estimate at r^{H.E.}_{500}. It can be partially explained by the ~20% scatter in the 2-D pressure map that can be propagated into the hydrostatic mass estimate. The uncertainty in the dynamical mass estimate caused by the substructure of the high velocity group is ~14%. The dynamical mass estimate using blue members is 1.23 times that using red members. We study the duality of $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theories in the presence of a massless adjoint field and massive quarks by calculating the superpotential using the Dighkgraaf-Vafa matrix model and by comparing with the previous result coming from Kutasov duality. The Kutasov duality method gives a result in which one instanton term is absent. We derive the effective superpotential for an N=1 SU(N_c) gauge theory with one massless adjoint field and N_f massless fundamental flavors and cubic tree-level superpotential for the adjoint field. This is a generalization of the Affleck-Dine-Seiberg superpotential to gauge theories with one massless adjoint matter field. We analyze the transmission of supersymmetry breaking in brane-world models of pseudo-supersymmetry. In these models two branes preserve different halves of the bulk supersymmetry. Thus supersymmetry is broken although each sector of the model is supersymmetric when considered separately. The world-volume theory on one brane feels the breakdown of supersymmetry only through two-loop interactions involving a coupling to fields from the other brane. In a 5D toy model with bulk vectors, we compute the diagrams that contribute to scalar masses on one brane and find that the masses are proportional to the compactification scale up to logarithmic corrections, m^2 ~ (2 pi R)^{-2}(ln(2 pi R ms)-1.1), where ms is an ultraviolet cutoff. Thus, for large compactification radii, where this result is valid, the brane scalars acquire a positive mass squared. We also compute the three-loop diagrams relevant to the Casimir energy between the two branes and find E ~ (2 pi R)^{-4}((ln(2 pi R ms)-1.7)^2+0.2). I discuss effective field theories of brane-world models where different sectors break different halves of the extended bulk supersymmetry. It is shown how to consistently couple N=2 supersymmetric matter to N=1 superfields that lack N=2 partners but transform in a non-linear representation of the N=2 algebra. In particular, I explain how to couple an N=2 vector to N=1 chiral fields such that the second supersymmetry is non-linearly realized. We analyze theories in which a supersymmetric sector is coupled to a supersymmetry-breaking sector described by a non-linear realization. We show how to consistently couple N=1 supersymmetric matter to non-supersymmetric matter in such a way that all interactions are invariant under non-linear supersymmetry transformations. We extend this formalism to couple N=2 supersymmetric matter to N=1 superfields that lack N=2 partners but transform in a non-linear representation of the N=2 algebra. In particular, we show how to couple an N=2 vector to N=1 chiral fields in a consistent way. This has important applications to effective field theories describing the interactions of D-brane world-volume fields with bulk fields. Recent understanding of {\cal N}=1* supersymmetric theory (mass deformed {\cal N}=4) has made it possible to find an exact superpotential which encodes the properties of the different phases of the theory. We consider this superpotential as an illustrative example for the source of a nontrivial scalar potential for the string theory dilaton and study its properties. The superpotential is characterized by the rank of the corresponding gauge group (N) and integers p,q,k labelling the different massive phases of the theory. For generic values of these parameters, we find the expected runaway behaviour of the potential to vanishing string coupling. But there are also supersymmetric minima at weak coupling stabilizing the dilaton field. An interesting property of this potential is that there is a proliferation of supersymmetric vacua in the confining phases, with the number of vacua increasing with N and leading to a kind of staircase potential. We discuss compact four-dimensional Z_N x Z_M type IIB orientifolds. We take a systematic approach to classify the possible models and construct them explicitely. The supersymmetric orientifolds of this type have already been constructed some time ago. We find that there exist several consistent orientifolds for each of the discrete groups Z_2 x Z_2, Z_2 x Z_4, Z_4 x Z_4, Z_2 x Z_6, Z_2 x Z_6' and Z_6 x Z_6 if anti-D5-branes are introduced. Supersymmetry is broken by the open strings ending on antibranes. The rank of the gauge group is reduced by a factor two if the underlying orbifold space has discrete torsion., Comment: Latex, 61 pages

We construct compact type IIB orientifolds with discrete groups Z_4, Z_6, Z_6', Z_8, Z_12 and Z_12'. These models are N=1 supersymmetric in D=4 and have vector structure. The possibility of having vector structure in Z_N orientifolds with even N arises due to an alternative Omega-projection in the twisted sectors. Some of the models without vector structure are known to be inconsistent because of uncancelled tadpoles. We show that vector structure leads to a sign flip in the twisted Klein bottle contribution. It has been proposed that gauge and Kaehler anomalies in four-dimensional type IIB orientifolds are cancelled by a generalized Green-Schwarz mechanism involving exchange of twisted RR-fields. We explain how this can be understood using the well-known duality between linear and chiral multiplets. We find that all the twisted fields associated to the N=1 sectors and some of the fields associated to the N=2 sectors reside in linear multiplets. But there are no linear multiplets associated to order-two twists. Only the linear multiplets contribute to anomaly cancellation. This suffices to cancel all U(1) anomalies. In this paper we discuss quantum modified moduli spaces in supergravity. We examine a model suggested by Izawa and Yanagida and by Intriligator and Thomas that breaks global supersymmetry by a quantum deformation of the classical moduli space. We determine the minimum of the supergravity potential when the gauge coupling is taken to depend on a dynamical field, typically a modulus of string theory. We find that the only minimum is at the trivial configuration of vanishing coupling constant and unbroken supersymmetry.
