Accurate and timely prediction of sea fog is very important for effectively managing maritime and coastal economic activities. Given the intricate nature and inherent variability of sea fog, traditional numerical and statistical forecasting methods are often proven inadequate. This study aims to develop an advanced sea fog forecasting method embedded in a numerical weather prediction model using the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE) coastal area as a case study. Prior to training our machine learning model, we employ a time-lagged correlation analysis technique to identify key predictors and decipher the underlying mechanisms driving sea fog occurrence. In addition, we implement ensemble learning and a focal loss function to address the issue of imbalanced data, thereby enhancing the predictive ability of our model. To verify the accuracy of our method, we evaluate its performance using a comprehensive dataset spanning one year, which encompasses both weather station observations and historical forecasts. Remarkably, our machine learning-based approach surpasses the predictive performance of two conventional methods, the weather research and forecasting nonhydrostatic mesoscale model (WRF-NMM) and the algorithm developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Forecast Systems Laboratory (FSL). Specifically, in regard to predicting sea fog with a visibility of less than or equal to 1 km with a lead time of 60 hours, our methodology achieves superior results by increasing the probability of detection (POD) while simultaneously reducing the false alarm ratio (FAR)., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures

Memory resources in data centers generally suffer from low utilization and lack of dynamics. Memory disaggregation solves these problems by decoupling CPU and memory, which currently includes approaches based on RDMA or interconnection protocols such as Compute Express Link (CXL). However, the RDMA-based approach involves code refactoring and higher latency. The CXL-based approach supports native memory semantics and overcomes the shortcomings of RDMA, but is limited within rack level. In addition, memory pooling and sharing based on CXL products are currently in the process of early exploration and still take time to be available in the future. In this paper, we propose the CXL over Ethernet approach that the host processor can access the remote memory with memory semantics through Ethernet. Our approach can support native memory load/store access and extends the physical range to cross server and rack levels by taking advantage of CXL and RDMA technologies. We prototype our approach with one server and two FPGA boards with 100 Gbps network and measure the memory access latency. Furthermore, we optimize the memory access path by using data cache and congestion control algorithm in the critical path to further lower access latency. The evaluation results show that the average latency for the server to access remote memory is 1.97 {\mu}s, which is about 37% lower than the baseline latency in the industry. The latency can be further reduced to 415 ns with cache block and hit access on FPGA.

The problem of multi-robot navigation of connectivity maintenance is challenging in multi-robot applications. This work investigates how to navigate a multi-robot team in unknown environments while maintaining connectivity. We propose a reinforcement learning (RL) approach to develop a decentralized policy, which is shared among multiple robots. Given range sensor measurements and the positions of other robots, the policy aims to generate control commands for navigation and preserve the global connectivity of the robot team. We incorporate connectivity concerns into the RL framework as constraints and introduce behavior cloning to reduce the exploration complexity of policy optimization. The policy is optimized with all transition data collected by multiple robots in random simulated scenarios. We validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach by comparing different combinations of connectivity constraints and behavior cloning. Rock classification plays an important role in rock mechanics, petrology, mining engineering, magmatic processes, and numerous other fields pertaining to geosciences. This study proposes a concatenated convolutional neural network (Con-CNN) method for classifying the geologic rock type based on petrographic thin sections. Herein, plane polarized light (PPL) and crossed polarized light (XPL) were used to acquire thin section images as the fundamental data. After conducting the necessary pre-processing analyses, the PPL and XPL images as well as their comprehensive image (CI) were incorporated in three convolutional neural networks (CNNs) comprising the same structure for achieving a preliminary classification; these images were developed by employing the fused principal component analysis (PCA). Subsequently, the results of the CNNs were concatenated by using the maximum likelihood detection to obtain a comprehensive classification result. Finally, a statistical revision was applied to fix the misclassification due to the proportion difference of minerals that were similar in appearance. In this study, 13 types of 92 rock samples, 196 petrographic thin sections, 588 images, and 63504 image patches were fabricated for the training and validation of the Con-CNN. The five-folds cross validation shows that the method proposed provides an overall accuracy of 89.97%, which facilitates the automation of rock classification in petrographic thin sections.
