Vortex motion in ferromagnetic-superconducting bilayers constituted by thin YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ film deposited on the top of thin manganite La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ film has been investigated. Both films were deposited on uniformly twinned single-crystalline substrates and patterned into strips directed at different angles to the twin lines pattern. These conditions lead to the guided vortex motion at different angles to the periodic pinning potential. It has been established that critical current and flux flow resistance in such an anisotropic pinning landscape-scale follow the elliptic dependence on the angle of the direction of the strip. For vortex flow at the directions close to the perpendicular to magnetic domain walls, signatures of the coherence in the vortex motion have been observed., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

We provide a systematic study of the position-dependent correlation function in weak lensing convergence maps and its relation to the squeezed limit of the three-point correlation function (3PCF) using state-of-the-art numerical simulations. We relate the position-dependent correlation function to its harmonic counterpart, i.e., the position-dependent power spectrum or equivalently the integrated bispectrum. We use a recently proposed improved fitting function, BiHalofit, for the bispectrum to compute the theoretical predictions as a function of source redshifts. In addition to low redshift results ($z_s=1.0-2.0$), we also provide results for maps inferred from lensing of the cosmic microwave background, i.e., $z_s=1100$. We include a {\em Euclid}-type realistic survey mask and noise. In agreement with the recent studies on the position-dependent power spectrum, we find that the results from simulations are consistent with the theoretical expectations when appropriate corrections are included. Performing a rough estimate, we find that the (S/N) for the detection of the position-dependent correlation function from {\em Euclid}-type mask with $f_{sky}=0.35$, can range between $6-12$ depending on the value of the intrinsic ellipticity distribution parameter $\sigma_{\epsilon} = 0.3-1.0$. For reconstructed $\kappa$ maps using an ideal CMB survey the (S/N) $\approx 1.8$. We also found that a $10\%$ deviation in $\sigma_8$ can be detected using IB for the optimistic case of $\sigma_\epsilon=0.3$ with a (S/N) $\approx 5$. We analyse the Planck full-mission cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and E-mode polarization maps to obtain constraints on primordial non-Gaussianity (NG). We compare estimates obtained from separable template-fitting, binned, and modal bispectrum estimators, finding consistent values for the local, equilateral, and orthogonal bispectrum amplitudes. Our combined temperature and polarization analysis produces the following results: f_NL^local = -0.9 +\- 5.1; f_NL^equil = -26 +\- 47; and f_NL^ortho = - 38 +\- 24 (68%CL, statistical). These results include the low-multipole (4 <= l < 40) polarization data, not included in our previous analysis, pass an extensive battery of tests, and are stable with respect to our 2015 measurements. Polarization bispectra display a significant improvement in robustness; they can now be used independently to set NG constraints. We consider a large number of additional cases, e.g. scale-dependent feature and resonance bispectra, isocurvature primordial NG, and parity-breaking models, where we also place tight constraints but do not detect any signal. The non-primordial lensing bispectrum is detected with an improved significance compared to 2015, excluding the null hypothesis at 3.5 sigma. We present model-independent reconstructions and analyses of the CMB bispectrum. Our final constraint on the local trispectrum shape is g_NLl^local = (-5.8 +\-6.5) x 10^4 (68%CL, statistical), while constraints for other trispectra are also determined. We constrain the parameter space of different early-Universe scenarios, including general single-field models of inflation, multi-field and axion field parity-breaking models. Our results provide a high-precision test for structure-formation scenarios, in complete agreement with the basic picture of the LambdaCDM cosmology regarding the statistics of the initial conditions (abridged)., Comment: 50 pages, 20 figures

The electric noise can be an important limitation for applications of conducting elements of size in the nanometer range. The intrinsic electrical noise of prospective materials for opto-spintronics applications like ZnO has not been characterized yet. In this study we have investigated the conductivity fluctuations in 10~nm thick current paths produced by proton implantation of ZnO microwires at room temperature. The voltage noise under a constant dc current bias in undoped as well as in Li-doped microwires is characterized by $1/f^a$ power spectra with $a \sim 1$. The noise intensity scales with the square of the bias current pointing out to bias-independent resistivity fluctuations as a source of the observed noise. The normalized power spectral density appears inversely proportional to the number of carriers in the probed sample volume, in agreement with the phenomenological Hooge law. For the proton-implanted ZnO microwire and at 1~Hz we obtain a normalized power spectral density as low as $\sim 10^{-11}~$Hz$^{-1}$., Comment: 10 pages,3 figures to be published in Nanotechnology (2016)

Conductivity noise in dc current biased La_{0.82}Ca_{0.18}MnO_{3} single crystals has been investigated in different metastable resistivity states enforced by applying voltage pulses to the sample at low temperatures. Noise measured in all investigated resistivity states is of 1/f-type and its intensity at high temperatures and low dc bias scales as a square of the bias. At liquid nitrogen temperatures for under bias exceeding a threshold value, the behavior of the noise deviates from above quasi- equilibrium modulation noise and depends in a non monotonic way on applied bias. The bias range of nonequilibrium 1/f noise coincides with the range at which the conductance increases linearly with bias voltage. This feature is attributed to a broad continuity of states enabling indirect inelastic tunneling across intrinsic tunnel junctions. The nonequilibrium noise has been ascribed to indirect intrinsic tunneling mechanism while resistivity changes in metastable states to variations in the energy landscape for charge carriers introduced by microcracks created by the pulse procedures employed, Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Low frequency noise in current biased La$_{0.82}$Ca$_{0.18}$MnO$_{3}$ single crystals has been investigated in a wide temperature range from 79 K to 290 K. Despite pronounced changes in magnetic properties and dissipation mechanisms of the sample with changing temperature, the noise spectra were found to be always of the 1/f type and their intensity (except the lowest temperature studied) scaled as a square of the bias. At liquid nitrogen temperatures and under bias exceeding some threshold value, the behavior of the noise deviates from the quasi-equilibrium modulation noise and starts to depend in a non monotonic way on bias. It has been verified that the observed noise obeys Dutta and Horn model of 1/f noise in solids. The appearance of nonequilibrium 1/f noise and its dependence on bias have been associated with changes in the distribution of activation energies in the underlying energy landscape. These changes have been correlated with bias induced changes in the intrinsic tunneling mechanism dominating dissipation in La$_{0.82}$Ca$_{0.18}$MnO$_{3}$ at low temperatures., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Journal of Applied Physics

A collective electron transfer (ET) process was discovered by studying the current noise in a field effect transistor with light-sensitive gate formed by nanocrystals linked by organic molecules to its surface. Fluctuations in the ET through the organic linker are reflected in the fluctuations of the transistor conductivity. The current noise has an avalanche character. Critical exponents obtained from the noise power spectra, avalanche distributions, and the dependence of the average avalanche size on avalanche duration are consistent with each other. 1/f noise in current biased La0.82Ca0.18MnO3 crystals has been investigated. The temperature dependence of the noise follows the resistivity changes with temperature suggesting that resistivity fluctuations constitute a fixed fraction of the total resistivity, independently of the dissipation mechanism and magnetic state of the system. The noise scales as a square of the current as expected for equilibrium resistivity fluctuations. However, at 77 K at bias exceeding some threshold, the noise intensity starts to decrease with increasing bias. The shape of the V-I characteristics leading to a peak in the differential resistance r_d=dV/dI in the vicinity of the order-disorder transition in NbSe2 is investigated. r_d is large when measured by dc current. However, for a small Iac on a dc bias r_d decreases rapidly with frequency, even at a few Hz, and displays a large out-of-phase signal. In contrast, the ac response increases with frequency in the absence of dc bias. These surprisingly opposite phenomena and the peak in r_d are shown to result from a dynamic coexistence of two vortex matter phases rather than from the commonly assumed plastic depinning., Comment: 12 pages 4 figures. The large increase in voltage noise, commonly observed in the vicinity of the peak-effect in superconductors, is ascribed to a novel noise mechanism. A strongly pinned metastable disordered vortex phase, which is randomly generated at the edges and annealed into ordered phase in the bulk, causes large fluctuations in the integrated critical current of the sample. The excess noise due to this dynamic admixture of two distinct phases is found to display pronounced reentrant behavior. In the Corbino geometry the injection of the metastable phase is prevented and, accordingly, the excess noise disappears, Comment: 5 pages 3 figures. Accepted for publication in Europhysics letters

Deterministic oscillations of current-induced metastable resistivity in changing voltage have been detected in La$_{0.82}$Ca$_{0.18}$MnO$_3$ single crystals. At low temperatures, below the Curie point, application of specific bias procedures switches the crystal into metastable resistivity state characterized by appearance of pronounced reproducible and random structures in the voltage dependence of the differential conductivity. In certain bias range equally spaced broad conductivity peaks have been observed. The oscillating conductivity has been tentatively ascribed to resonances in a quantum well within the double tunnel barrier of intrinsic weak-links associated with twin-like defect boundaries., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Phys. Giant enhancement of the nonlinear response of a single crystal of Nb placed in a sweeping magnetic field has been experimentally observed. The rectified signal from Nb ($Tc=9.15$ K) has been measured by means of an inductive method as a function of temperature, dc field, dc field sweep rate, and the amplitude of ac field. The Nb sample was excited by an amplitude modulated ac field. Under a stationary regime, the rectified signal appears only for magnetic fields ($H_0$) in the range $H_{c2}H_{c1}$. This experiment shows that the amplitude of the rectified signal is two orders of magnitude larger than the amplitude of the signal seen under stationary field conditions. Transport studies in a Corbino disk geometry suggest that the Bragg glass phase undergoes a first-order transition into a disordered solid. This transition shows a sharp reentrant behavior at low fields. In contrast, in the conventional strip configuration, the phase transition is obscured by the injection of the disordered vortices through the sample edges, which results in the commonly observed vortex instabilities and smearing of the peak effect in NbSe2 crystals. These features are found to be absent in the Corbino geometry, in which the circulating vortices do not cross the sample edges., Comment: 12 pages 3 figures. The interaction between the telegraph noise and background voltage fluctuations in the current induced dissipative state of high-Tc BiSrCaCuO thin films has been investigated. Experimental time records of the voltage drop across current biased thin film strips show markedly different background noise traces in the up and down telegraph states. Detailed analysis demonstrates that fluctuations around the telegraph voltage levels are due to a unique background noise process. The apparent quiet and noisy voltage states are due only to differences in the effective frequency bandwidth at which background noise is seen at distinct telegraph levels. Changes of the background noise variance ratio with changing bias current follow changes of the statistical average lifetimes of the random telegraph process., Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. B

The spectrum of the diffuse isotropic component of cosmic X-rays over the 13-180 keV range was determined by the UCSD/MIT Hard X-Ray and Gamma-Ray instrument (HEAO A4) on the High Energy Astronomical Observatory-1 (HEAO-1). The instrument consists of a complex of actively shielded and collimated scintillation counters, including the Low Energy Detector set from which the data reported here were obtained. These data join smoothly with the spectrum at lower energies reported by the GSFC HEAO A2 instrument and with that measured to 400 keV by the HEAO A4 Medium Energy Detectors. The HEAO data set also joins the recent results from COMPTEL on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory in the 1-10 MeV range, which failed to confirm the existence of an "MeV bump" in this range. Although the spectrum over the entire range 3 keV < E < 100 GeV can be fit by a simple empirical analytic expression, the origin is likely due to a number of distinct source components. The prevailing idea for the origin is that the hard X-ray spectrum is due to X-rays from various AGN components, particularly Seyfert galaxies extending to cosmological distances, and that the low energy gamma-rays may be due to emission from type 1a Supernovae, also integrated to cosmological distances. The higher energy gamma-ray spectrum defined by EGRET, also on the CGRO, may be due to unresolved gamma-ray emitting blazars. Models of production by these source components, extrapolated to the present epoch, must reproduce the observationally derived spectrum., Comment: LaTeX, 16pp, 3figs

We present the results of OSSE observations of the soft gamma ray continuum emission from the Galactic plane at longitude 95 degrees. Emission is detected between 50 and 600 keV where the spectrum is fit well by a power law with photon index -2.6+-0.3 and flux (4.0+-0.5) 10^{-2} photons/s/cm^2/rad/MeV at 100 keV. This spectral shape in this range is similar to that found for the continuum emission from the inner Galaxy but the amplitude is lower by a factor of four. This emission is either due to unresolved and previously unknown point sources or it is of diffuse origin, or a combination of the two. Simultaneous observations with OSSE and smaller field of view instruments operating in the soft gamma ray energy band, such as XTE or SAX, would help resolve this issue. If it is primarily diffuse emission due to nonthermal electron bremsstrahlung, as is the >1 MeV Galactic ridge continuum, then the power in low energy cosmic ray electrons exceeds that of the nuclear component of the cosmic rays by an order of magnitude. This would have profound implications for the origin of cosmic rays and the energetics of the interstellar medium. We report results of multiple observations of the quasar 3C 273 with the Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE) instrument on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. These observations span the period from 1991 June through 1993 January and represent the most sensitive observations to date in low-energy gamma rays. The source was detected at historically weak 100 keV fluxes compared with previous measurements. Variability by factors of approximately 3 on timescales of approximately equal 2 months was observed in the energy band 50-150 keV. The data are well described by a single power law with a proton number index Gamma = 1.7 +/- 0.1. No significant change of Gamma was observed during changes in intensity. Thermal models do not provide acceptable fits to the data. When the OSSE data are combined with contemporaneous measurements by COMPTEL and EGRET, the spectrum is seen to break at an energy of 1.0(+0.9, -0.4) MeV to a softer power law with Delta Gamma = 0.7(+0.06, -0.11), forming a power law with Gamma = 2.4 between approximately 1 MeV and several GeV.

Cassipeia A, the youngest known supernova remnant in the Galaxy and a strong radio and X-ray source, was observed by OSSE 1992 July 16-August 6. Its close distance (approximately 3 kpc) and its young age (approximately 300 yr) make Cas A the best candidate among known supernova remnants for detecting Ti-44 gamma-ray lines. We find no evidence of emission at 67.9 keV, 78.4 keV, or 1.157 MeV, the three strongest Ti-44 decay lines. From simultaneous fits to the three lines our 99% confidence upper limit to the flux in each line is 5.5 x 10(exp -5) gamma/sq cm s. We also report upper limits for the 4.44 MeV C-12 nuclear de-excitation line, which could be produced by interactions of acclerated particles in the supernova remnant, and for the hard X-ray continuum.

The Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) observed the Galactic black hole candidate GX 339-4 as a target of oppurtunity in 1991 September, in response to the outburst reported by Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE). We report here on energy spectra in the 50 keV-10 MeV range obtained by OSSE. The source was detected from 50 to 400 keV at a level relative to the Crab Nebula of approximately 30%. The observed spectrum was prescribed reasonably well by a power law with an exponential cutoff; a least-squares fit yielded a photon index of 0.88 +/- 0.05 and a cutoff energy of 68 +/- 2 keV. The addition of a Compton reflection component did not significantly improve the overall fit. An optically thin thermal bremsstrahlung spectrum also provides a good fit, and the thermal Comptonization model of Sunyaev & Titarchuk, while deficient in describing the data above approximately 200 keV, cannot formally be ruled out. A pure power law with reflection does not fit the observed spectrum. During a follow-up observation made in 1991 November the intensity of the source below 100 keV had dropped by more than a factor of 40, and it was no longer detected above approximately 100 keV. The energy spectrum during the November observation could be characterized by a power law with a photon index of 2.3 +/- 0.3; the spectrum was fitted equally well with the same exponentially cutoff power-law model applied to the September observation, reduced in intensity by a factor of approximately 40. During the 1991 September observation, the luminosity in the 50-400 keV band was approximately 2 x 10(exp 37) ergs/s (assuming a distance of 4 kpc), no more than a factor of 5 below the soft X-ray luminosity of GX 339-4 observed in its X-ray high state. The luminosity during the 1991 November observation was approximately 5 x 10(exp 35) ergs/s. Extrapolations of both the exponentially cutoff power-law and Sunyaev-Titarchuk models to the approximately 5-20 keV X-ray band yield flux levels very close to that observed by Ginga during an overlapping interval in 1991 September, when GX 339-4 was reported to be in its low state. This may be one of the strongest indications to date of a direct correspondence between the low X-ray state and gamma-ray outbursts of GX 339-4.

We present data on the galactic X-ray source 1E 1740.7-2942 from the Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE) on board NASA's Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO). Episodes of increased low-energy gamma radiation have been reported from this source, including 1-day events in 1990 October and 1992 September. These events, of intensity 7 x 10(exp -3) and 4 x 10(exp -3) photons/sq cm/s, respectively, have been interpreted as broadened and redshifted positron annihilation radiation. OSSE conducted observations of the Galactic Center region during a 21-day interval from 1992 September 17 thru 1992 October 8. This includes the time of increased 200-450 keV emission from 1E 1740.7-2942 reported by SIGMA. The OSSE observations do not confirm this event. For the specific outburst recorded by SIGMA, 1992 Sep. 19.42-20.58 (UT), OSSE data provide an upper limit (3 sigma) of 2.4 x 10(exp -3) photons/sq cm/s.

We present soft gamma-ray observations by the Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO) of the transient X-ray binary pulsar A0535+26. The observations were made 1994 February 8-17, immediately prior to the peak of a giant outburst. The phase averaged spectrum is complex and cannot be described by a single-component model. We find that structure in the spectrum above 100 keV can best be modeled by an absorption feature near 110 keV, which we interepret as the signature of cyclotron resonant scattering. Because of OSSE's 45 keV threshold, we are unable to make a definitive statement on the presence of a 55 keV absorption line; however, we can conclude that if this line does exist, it must have a smaller optical depth than the line at 110 keV. A first harmonic (=fundamental) cyclotron resonance at 110 keV corresponds to a magnetic field strength at the surface of the neutron star of approximately 1 x 10(exp 13) G (approximately 5 x 10(exp 12) G if the first harmonic is at 55 keV).

Gamma-ray observations of the nearby starburst galaxies NGC 253 and M82 over the energy range (0.05-10) MeV have been obtained with the Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE) spectrometer on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO). The priority of these galaxies as OSSE targets had been established on the grounds that the average supernova rate may be high in starbursts as indicated by infrared and radio observations, and at distances of approximately 3 Mpc a significant chance of supernova gamm-ray line detection exists. NGC 253 was detected in continuum emission up to 165 keV with a total significance of 4.4 sigma and an estimated luminosity of 3 x 10(exp 40) ergs/s. The spectrum is best fit by a power law of photon index approximately 2.5. We consider the possible contribution of different emission mechanisms, including inverse Compton scattering, bremsstrahlung, discrete sources, and Type Ia/Ib supernova continuum to the measured flux. No significant continuum flux was observed from M82. A search for the gamma-ray line from the decay of the most abundant radioactive element produced in supernovae (Ni-56 yields Co-56 yields Fe-56) yielded no significant detection: the 3 sigma upper limits to the line fluxes at 0.158, 0.812, 0.847, and 1.238 MeV for both galaxies are obtained.

We made observations of NGC 1275 with the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory's Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE) between 1991 November 28 and December 12. We did not detect the source during this viewing period. Our 3 sigma upper limit to a detection in the approximately 50-90 keV range is 6 x 10(exp -6) photons/sq cm/s/keV. This flux is more than 10 times lower than the 3 sigma detection in the same energy range reported by Rothschild et al. for their OSO 7 observations. Our results are discussed in comparison with radio observations and models for the X-ray emission, and we show that it is likely that most of the approx. greater than 10 keV photons come from the nuclear region of NGC 1275. We find no significant correlation between the variable radio intensity and the hard X-ray flux of the entire NGC 1275 source. Simultaneous Very Large Baseline Array and gamma-ray observations are needed to test the self-Compton synchrotron models for gamma-ray emission from the core of NGC 1275. Our results also provide a lower limit to the magnetic field of approximately 2 x 10(exp -7) gauss for the approximately 5 min radio source centered on NGC 1275.

Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE) observed the 150 ms X-ray pulsar PSR B1509-58 m the supernova remnant MSH 15-52 for 4 weeks in 1992. The pulsed spectrum from 50 keV to 5 MeV is well represented by a single-power-law photon spectrum of the form (3.14 +/- 0.16) x 10(exp -6) x (E/118.5 keV)(exp -1.68 +/- -0.09) photons cm(exp -2)s(exp -1)keV(exp -1). This is significantly harder than the Crab pulsar spectrum in this energy range. The Ginga soft X-ray spectrum (2-60 keV) reported by Kawai et al. is significantly harder than the observed OSSE spectrum and predicts a flux 2 times higher than we observe in the approximately 55-170 keV energy band. This requires a break to a steeper spectrum somewhere in the intermediate energy range (approximately 20-80 keV). The spectrum must soften again at higher energies or the pulsar would have easily been detected by EGRET, COS B, and SAS 2.

The Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE) on the Compton Observatory observed SN 1993J during three intervals centered approximately 12, 30, and 108 days after its outburst. Hard X-ray emission was detected in the first two of these intervals. No emission was seen in the third observation or in two earlier observations in 1991 and 1992. The coincidence of the observed excess with the outburst of SN 1993J and the consistency of the spectra and time evolution with those seen at lower energies by ROSAT and ASCA (Astro-D) argue that the observed emission is indeed from SN 1993J. It is probably due to the interaction of the fast supernova ejecta with circumstellar material. The luminosity, 5 x 10(exp 40) ergs/sec (50-150 keV) in the first interval, is significantly larger than predicted. Extrapolating the spectrum to a few keV accounts for most or all of the observed emission at low energy. The observed high temperature, 10(exp 9) K, is easily obtained in the shocked circumstellar matter, but a surprisingly high density is required there to give the observed luminosity, and little or no additional X-ray emission from denser shocked supernova ejecta is allowed. The hard emission might also be explained in terms of the shocked supernova ejecta itself with unexpectedly high temperature.

The Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE) on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (GRO) has performed numerous observations of the Galactic plane and Galactic center region to measure the distribution of Galactic 511 keV positron annihilation radiation and to search for time variability of the emission. The initial 511 keV line fluxes for the observations performed during the first 18 months of the GRO mission are presented. The 511 keV line flux for a typical Galactic center observation is (2.5 +/- 0.3) x 10 exp -4 gamma/sq cm per sec, where the quoted uncertainty represents the 1 sigma statistical uncertainty. No statistically significant time variability of the line flux has been observed; the 3 sigma upper limit to daily variations from the mean is 3 x 10 exp -4 gamma/sq cm per sec. The distribution of Galactic 511 keV positron annihilation radiation implied by the OSSE observations is discussed and compared with observations by other instruments.

The Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment on the Arthur Holly Compton Gamma Ray Observatory satellite uses four actively shielded NaI (Tl)-CsI(Na) phoswich detectors to provide gamma-ray line and continuum detection capability in the 0.05-10 MeV energy range. The instrument includes secondary capabilities for gamma-ray and neutron detection between 10 and 250 MeV. The detectors have 3.8 deg x 11.04 deg (FWHM) fields of view defined by tungsten collimators. Each detector has an independent, single-axis orientation system which permits offset pointing from the spacecraft Z-axis for background measurements and multitarget observations. The instrument, and its calibration and performance, are described.

Observations of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 with the Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment instrument on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory are presented. A continuum spectrum is observed, which steepens exponentially with an e-folding energy of 39 +/- 2 keV over the 65-300 keV range. Source intensity variability of approximately 25 percent was seen during the observations, and no significant change in the spectral shape was detected. Simple pair models cannot explain the observed spectrum of NGC 4151, and repeated observations are required to determine whether this spectral shape is common or is even the dominant spectral state in this class of active galactic nuclei.

The Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE) on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory has performed several observations of the galactic plane and galactic center region to measure the distribution of galactic 511 keV positron annihilation radiation. Preliminary analysis of data collected during the observation of the galactic center region over the period 13-24 Jun. 1991, indicates the presence of a 511 keV line and positronium continuum superimposed on a power-law continuum. The line of flux was found to be (2.7 +/- 0.5) x 10(exp -4) gamma/sq cm sec, with a positronium fraction of (0.9 +/- 0.2). The 3(sigma) upper limit to daily variations in the 511 keV line flux from the mean during the observation interval is 3 x 10(exp -4) gamma/sq cm sec. If all of the observed annihilation radiation is assumed to originate from the x-ray source 1E 1740.7-2942, the corresponding 511 keV line flux would be (3.0 +/- 0.6) x 10(exp -4) gamma/sq cm sec. The 3(sigma) upper limit for 511 keV line emission from the x-ray binary GX1+4 is 6 x 10(exp -4) gamma/sq cm sec. Results from the galactic plane observations at galactic longitudes of 25 degrees (16-21 Aug. 1991) and 339 degrees (6-11 Sep. 1991) suggest that the emission is concentrated near the galactic center. The observations and the preliminary results are described.

Preliminary results are presented of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE) observations of the Crab pulsar. The pulsar energy spectra and light curves are in general agreement with previous observations, validating the OSSE pulsar data acquisition modes and data analysis algorithms. The data suggest that the spectrum of the pulsar varies throughout the light curve. The 'interpulse' region has a slightly flatter spectrum in the approx. 60 to 250 keV region and a slightly steeper spectrum at higher energies than the two main pulses. No evidence was found for any lines in the spectra with a typical sensitivity of about 10(exp -4) photons/sq cm/s.

Analysis of the spectra from the Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE) is complicated because of the typically low signal to noise (approx. 0.1 percent) and the large background variability. The OSSE instrument was designed to address these difficulties by periodically offset-pointing the detectors from the source to perform background measurements. These background measurements are used to estimate the background during each of the source observations. The resulting background-subtracted spectra can then be accumulated and fitted for spectral lines and/or continua. Data selection based on various environmental parameters can be performed at various stages during the analysis procedure. In order to achieve the instrument's statistical sensitivity, however, it will be necessary for investigators to develop a detailed understanding of the instrument operation, data collection, and the background spectrum and its variability. A brief description of the major steps in the OSSE spectral analysis process is described, including a discussion of the OSSE background spectrum and examples of several observational strategies.

Data from the UCSD/MIT Hard X-ray and Low-Energy Gamma-Ray Experiment on the first High Energy Astronomy Observatory (HEAO 1) were used to determine the spectrum of the Crab Nebula in the 10 keV-5 MeV energy range. The spectral change in the 100 keV-1 MeV region is characterized. When the combined spectrum is fitted to a broken power-law model, the data require a description with the following distinct spectral indices: a power-law slope of 2.08 in the 1-100 keV region and a slope of about 2.5 above 150 keV.

Results are reported from an analysis of radioactivity induced in the NaI medium-energy detector of the hard X-ray and low-energy gamma-ray experiment during the HEAO-1 satellite mission (1977-1978). Consideration is given to the instrument characteristics, the origin and variability of background, and the separation of cosmic-ray activity from the internal activity due to South Atlantic Anomaly trapped protons. Energy spectra and tables listing the nuclide identifications are provided.

The spectrum of the diffuse X and gamma ray background was measured between 15 keV and 4 MeV with the scintillation detectors aboard the HEAO 1 satellite. The apertures of the detectors were modulated on time scales of hours and the difference in counting rates measured the diffuse component flux. The observed spectrum is presented and compared with other measurements. At least two components are indicated, one below -100 keV and the other above. Possible origins are discussed.
