Search

A natural definition for instanton density operator in lattice QCD has been long desired. We show this problem is, and has to be, resolved by higher category theory. The problem is resolved by refining at a conceptual level the Yang-Mills theory on lattice, in order to recover the homotopy information in the continuum, which would have been lost if we put the theory on lattice in the traditional way. The refinement needed is a generalization -- through the lens of higher category theory -- of the familiar process of Villainization that captures winding in lattice XY model and Dirac quantization in lattice Maxwell theory. The apparent difference is that Villainization is in the end described by principal bundles, hence familiar, but more general topological operators can only be captured on the lattice by more flexible structures beyond the usual group theory and fibre bundles, hence the language of categories becomes natural and necessary. The key structure we need for our particular problem is called multiplicative bundle gerbe, based upon which we can construct suitable structures to naturally define the 2d Wess-Zumino-Witten term, 3d skyrmion density operator and 4d hedgehog defect for lattice $S^3$ (pion vacua) non-linear sigma model, and the 3d Chern-Simons term, 4d instanton density operator and 5d Yang monopole defect for lattice $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory. In a broader perspective, higher category theory enables us to rethink more systematically the relation between continuum quantum field theory and lattice quantum field theory. We sketch a proposal towards a general machinery that constructs the suitably refined lattice degrees of freedom for a given non-linear sigma model or gauge theory in the continuum, realizing the desired topological operators on the lattice., Comment: 126 pages

Graves' disease is a common condition that is diagnosed clinically by determining the smoothness of the thyroid texture and its morphology in ultrasound images. Currently, the most widely used approach for the automated diagnosis of Graves' disease utilizes Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for both feature extraction and classification. However, these methods demonstrate limited efficacy in capturing texture features. Given the high capacity of wavelets in describing texture features, this research integrates learnable wavelet modules utilizing the Lifting Scheme into CNNs and incorporates a parallel wavelet branch into the ResNet18 model to enhance texture feature extraction. Our model can analyze texture features in spatial and frequency domains simultaneously, leading to optimized classification accuracy. We conducted experiments on collected ultrasound datasets and publicly available natural image texture datasets, our proposed network achieved 97.27% accuracy and 95.60% recall on ultrasound datasets, 60.765% accuracy on natural image texture datasets, surpassing the accuracy of ResNet and conrming the effectiveness of our approach.

Thermal transport has been used to probe the nature of $\alpha\mbox{-}\mathrm{RuCl}_3$, an important candidate of Kitaev material. Two remarkable observations were made under applied magnetic fields at low temperatures, and have stimulated extensive discussions. One is a sizable thermal Hall effect, and the other is an apparent "oscillation" of the longitudinal thermal conductivity with the magnetic field. It has been proposed that the former is due to a bosonic Chern band. Meanwhile, the origin of the latter has largely remained obscure. This work aims to resolve this "oscillation" puzzle. By examining the thermal transport data as well as other measured properties of $\alpha\mbox{-}\mathrm{RuCl}_3$, we argue that the most plausible scenario is that of phonons scattering with spin degrees of freedom across multiple phases. We substantiate this picture into a phenomenological theory, which reproduces the "oscillation" behavior in a simple manner and makes predictions that can be examined by future experiments. Moreover, our phenomenological theory and the aforementioned proposal for the thermal Hall effect support each other. We hope this work can thus help settle the physical mechanism behind the thermal transport puzzles in $\alpha\mbox{-}\mathrm{RuCl}_3$.

Twisted photons can be emitted by free electrons in circular or spiral motion, which carry orbital angular momentum (OAM) and possess a helical phase structure. However, classical radiation reaction (RR) effects has not been investigated as an accelerated electron emits vortex radiation during the interaction with a electromagnetic field. This work focuses on investigating the effects of radiation reaction on the production of twisted photons in the Nonlinear Inverse Thomson Scattering (NITS) process. Using the precise electron trajectory obtained by Landau-Lifshitz (LL) equation with a circularly polarized (CP) plane-wave field, we find that the radiation reaction effects can be significant for a sufficiently long pulse of a plane wave. They observe modifications in the frequency, phase structure, rotational asymmetry of OAM density, and energy distribution of the vortex field due to radiation reaction. This finding could provide an unique signature for the detection of radiation reaction.

To mitigate the pandemic stemming from COVID-19, numerous nations have initiated extensive vaccination campaigns for their citizens since late 2020. While affluent countries have predominantly received vaccine allocations, fewer doses have been dispatched to nations with lower average incomes. This unequal distribution not only widens the disparity between wealthy and impoverished regions but also prolongs the pandemic, evident in the emergence of new viral variants. Our research delves into the correlation between the duration of the pandemic and the timing of vaccine distribution between two countries with migratory ties. By using a pair of coupled Susceptible- Infected-Recovered-Deceased (SIRD) models incorporating vaccination data, we demonstrate that timely sharing of vaccines benefits both nations, regardless of the presence of viral variants. One of the major difficulties in realizing a high-dimensional frequency converter for conventional optical vortex (COV) stems from the difference in ring diameter of COV modes with different topological charge numbers l. Here, we implement a high-dimensional frequency convertor for perfect optical vortex (POV) modes with invariant size through the four-wave mixing (FWM) process by utilizing Bessel-Gaussian beams instead of Laguerre-Gaussian beams. The measured conversion efficiency from 1530 nm to 795 nm is independent of l at least in subspace of {-6,...,6}, and the achieved conversion fidelities for two-dimensional (2D) superposed POV states exceed 97%. We further realize the frequency conversion of 3D, 5D and 7D superposition states with fidelities as high as 96.70%, 89.16% and 88.68%, respectively. The reported scheme is implemented in hot atomic vapor, it's also compatible with the cold atomic system and may find applications in high-capacity and long-distance quantum communication.

Multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) beamforming design is typically formulated as a non-convex weighted sum rate (WSR) maximization problem that is known to be NP-hard. This problem is solved either by iterative algorithms, which suffer from slow convergence, or more recently by using deep learning tools, which require time-consuming pre-training process. In this paper, we propose a low-complexity meta-learning based gradient descent algorithm. A meta network with lightweight architecture is applied to learn an adaptive gradient descent update rule to directly optimize the beamformer. This lightweight network is trained during the iterative optimization process, which we refer to as \emph{training while solving}, which removes both the training process and the data-dependency of existing deep learning based solutions.Extensive simulations show that the proposed method achieves superior WSR performance compared to existing learning-based approaches as well as the conventional WMMSE algorithm, while enjoying much lower computational load.

Infrared optical measurement has a wide range of applications in industry and science, but infrared light detectors suffer from high costs and inferior performance than visible light detectors. Four-wave mixing (FWM) process allows detection in the infrared range by detecting correlated visible light. We experimentally investigate the stimulated FWM process in a hot $^{85}$Rb atomic vapor cell, in which a weak infrared signal laser at $1530~$nm induces the FWM process and is amplified and converted into a strong FWM light at $780~$nm, the latter can be detected more easily. We find the optimized single- and two-photon detunings by studying the dependence of the frequency of input laser on the generated FWM light. What's more, the power gain increases rapidly as the signal intensity decreases, which is consistent with our theoretical analysis. As a result, the power gain can reach up to 500 at a signal laser power of $0.1~\mu$W and the number of detected photons increased by a factor of 250. Finally, we experimentally prove that our amplification process can work in a broad band in the frequency domain by exploring the response rate of our stimulated FWM process., Comment: 4 figures

The Kapustin-Fidkowski no-go theorem forbids $U(1)$ symmetric topological orders with non-trivial Hall conductivity in (2+1)d from admitting commuting projector Hamiltonians, where the latter is the paradigmatic method to construct exactly solvable lattice models for topological orders. Even if a topological order would intrinsically have admitted commuting projector Hamiltonians, the theorem forbids so once its interplay with $U(1)$ global symmetry which generates Hall conductivity is taken into consideration. Nonetheless, in this work, we show that for all (2+1)d $U(1)$ symmetric abelian topological orders of such kind, we can construct a lattice Hamiltonian that is controllably solvable at low energies, even though not "exactly" solvable; hence, this no-go theorem does not lead to significant difficulty in the lattice study of these topological orders. This paper proposes a learning aided gradient descent (LAGD) algorithm to solve the weighted sum rate (WSR) maximization problem for multiple-input single-output (MISO) beamforming. The proposed LAGD algorithm directly optimizes the transmit precoder through implicit gradient descent based iterations, at each of which the optimization strategy is determined by a neural network, and thus, is dynamic and adaptive. At each instance of the problem, this network is initialized randomly, and updated throughout the iterative solution process. Therefore, the LAGD algorithm can be implemented at any signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and for arbitrary antenna/user numbers, does not require labelled data or training prior to deployment. Numerical results show that the LAGD algorithm can outperform of the well-known WMMSE algorithm as well as other learning-based solutions with a modest computational complexity. The number of rational points in toric data are given for two-parameter Calabi-Yau $n$-folds as toric hypersurfaces over finite fields $\mathbb F_p$ . We find that the fundamental period is equal to the number of rational points of the Calabi-Yau $n$-folds in zeroth order $p$-adic expansion. By analyzing the solution set of the GKZ-system given by the enhanced polyhedron, we deduce that under type II/F-theory duality the 3D and 4D Calabi-Yau manifolds have the same number of rational points in zeroth order. We study B-brane superpotentials depending on several closed- and open- moduli on Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces and complete intersections. By blowing up the ambient space along a curve wrapped by B-branes in a Calabi-Yau manifold, we obtain a blow-up new manifold and the period integral satisfying the GKZ-system. Via mirror symmetry to A-model, we calculate the superpotentials and extract Ooguri-Vafa invariants for concrete examples of several open-closed moduli in Calabi-Yau manifolds.

Recent experimental observations of unexpectedly large thermal Hall conductivities, $\kappa_H$, in insulating materials, including the parent compounds of the high temperature superconducting cuprates, likely reflect an extrinsic contribution from a yet to be identified extrinsic source of skew scattering of acoustic phonons. We show that resonant scattering of phonons from a certain class of three-level systems produces strong skew scattering in the presence of a modest magnetic field. We present the observational results from a detailed timing analysis of the black hole candidate EXO 1846-031 during its outburst in 2019 with the observations of Insight-HXMT, NICER and MAXI. This outburst can be classfied roughly into four different states. Type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed by NICER (about 0.1-6Hz) and Insight-HXMT (about 0.7-8Hz) are also reported in this work. Meanwhile, we study various physical quantities related to QPO frequency.The QPO rms-frequency relationship in three energy band 1-10 keV indicates that there is a turning pointing in frequency around 2 Hz,which is similar to that of GRS 1915+105. A possible hypothesis for the relationship above may be related to the inclination of the source, which may require a high inclination to explain it. The relationships between QPO frequency and QPO rms,hardness,total fractional rms and count rate have also been found in other transient sources, which can indicate that the origin of type-C QPOs is non-thermal.

In this paper, a low radar cross section (RCS) patch antenna based on the 3-bit metasurface composed of linear polarization conversion elements is designed. At first, 3-bit coding metamaterials are constructed by a sequence of eight coded unit cells, which have a similar cross-polarized reflected amplitude response and gradient reflected phase responses covering 0~2{\pi}, respectively. Equivalent circuit models (ECMs) of these unit cells are created to describe their electrical behavior for the two linear incident polarizations at the same time. Then, a patch antenna is integrated on the 3-bit metasurface, of which the elements are placed with a 2-dimensional linear coding sequence. The metal square ring is set around the patch antenna to protect it from the disturbance of metasurface. Both the simulation and experiment results demonstrate that the designed metasurface can primarily reduce the antenna RCS at a broadband, while the antenna performances are not degraded significantly.

In the context of recent experimental observations of an unexpectedly large thermal Hall conductivity, $\kappa_H$, in insulating $\mathrm{La_2CuO_4}$ (LCO) and $\mathrm{SrTiO_3}$ (STO), we theoretically explore conditions under which acoustic phonons can give rise to such a large $\kappa_H$. Both the intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to $\kappa_H$ are large in proportion to the dielectric constant, $\epsilon$, and the flexoelectric coupling, $F$. While the intrinsic contribution is still orders of magnitude smaller than the observed effect, an extrinsic contribution proportional to the phonon mean free path appears likely to account for the observations, at least in STO. In topological phases of matter, the interplay between intrinsic topological order and global symmetry is an interesting task. In the study of topological orders with discrete global symmetry, an important systematic approach is the construction of exactly soluble lattice models. However, for continuous global symmetry, in particular the electromagnetic $U(1)$, the lattice approach has been less systematically developed. In this paper, we introduce a systematic construction of effective theories for a large class of abelian topological orders on three-dimensional spacetime lattice with electromagnetic background. We discuss the associated topological properties, including the Hall conductivity and the spin-c nature of the electromagnetic background. Some of these effective spacetime lattice theories can be readily mapped to microscopic Hamiltonians on spatial lattice; others may also shed light on their possible microscopic Hamiltonian realizations. Our approach is based on the gauging of $1$-form $\mathbb{Z}$ symmetries. We study the generic band structures of the five-dimensional (5D) Weyl semimetal, in which the band degeneracies are 2D Weyl surfaces in the momentum space, and may have non-trivial linkings with each other if they carry nonzero second Chern numbers. We prove a number of theorems constraining the topological linking configurations of the Weyl surfaces, which can be viewed as a 5D generalization of the celebrated Doubling Theorem for 3D Weyl semimetal. As a direct physical consequence of these constraints, the 5D Weyl semimetal hosts a rich structure of topological boundary states. We show that on the 4D boundary of the 5D Weyl semimetal, there are 3D chiral Fermi hypersurfaces protected by bulk Weyl surfaces. On top of that, for bulk Weyl surfaces that are linked and carry nonzero second Chern numbers, the associated boundary 3D Fermi hypersurfaces will shrink to singularities at certain energies, which trace out a protected 1D Weyl nodal arc, in analogy to the Fermi arc on the 3D Weyl semimetal surface., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures; v2: relevant references added

We generalize our previous lattice construction of the abelian bosonization duality in $2+1$ dimensions to the entire web of dualities as well as the $N_f=2$ self-duality, via the lattice implementation of a set of modular transformations in the theory space. The microscopic construction provides explicit operator mappings, and allows the manifestation of some hidden symmetries. It also exposes certain caveats and implicit assumptions beneath the usual application of the modular transformations to generate the web of dualities. We provide a lattice demonstration of $(2+1)$-dimensional field theory dualities relating free Dirac or Majorana fermions to strongly-interacting bosonic Chern-Simons-matter theories. Specifically, we prove the recent conjecture that $U(N)$ level-1 with $N_f$ gauged complex Wilson-Fisher scalars (where $1\le N_f\le N$) is dual to $N_f$ Dirac fermions, as well as the analogous conjecture relating $SO(N)$ theories with real Wilson-Fisher scalars to Majorana fermions for $1\le N_f\le N-2$. The idea of statistical transmutation plays a crucial role in descriptions of the fractional quantum Hall effect. However, a recently conjectured duality between a critical boson and a massless 2-component Dirac fermion extends this notion to gapless systems. This duality sheds light on highly non-trivial problems such as the half-filled Landau level, the superconductor-insulator transition, and surface states of strongly coupled topological insulators. Although this boson-fermion duality has undergone many consistency checks, it has remained unproven. Quantum walks, in virtue of the coherent superposition and quantum interference, possess exponential superiority over its classical counterpart in applications of quantum searching and quantum simulation. The quantum enhanced power is highly related to the state space of quantum walks, which can be expanded by enlarging the photon number and/or the dimensions of the evolution network, but the former is considerably challenging due to probabilistic generation of single photons and multiplicative loss. Here we demonstrate a two-dimensional continuous-time quantum walk by using the external geometry of photonic waveguide arrays, rather than the inner degree of freedoms of photons. Using femtosecond laser direct writing, we construct a large-scale three-dimensional structure which forms a two-dimensional lattice with up to 49X49 nodes on a photonic chip. We demonstrate spatial two-dimensional quantum walks using heralded single photons and single-photon-level imaging. We analyze the quantum transport properties via observing the ballistic evolution pattern and the variance profile, which agree well with simulation results. We further reveal the transient nature that is the unique feature for quantum walks of beyond one dimension. An architecture that allows a walk to freely evolve in all directions and a large scale, combining with defect and disorder control, may bring up powerful and versatile quantum walk machines for classically intractable problems., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. We consider the response of the density of a fermion ensemble to an applied weak static magnetic field. It is known that for non-interacting Fermi gas, this response is fully characterized by the Fermi volume and the Berry curvature on the Fermi surface. Here we show the same result holds for interacting fermions, including Fermi liquid and non-Fermi liquid, to all orders in perturbation theory. Berry phase plays an important role in many non-trivial phenomena over a broad range of many-body systems. In this thesis we focus on the Berry phase due to the change of the particles' momenta, and study its effects in free and interacting fermionic systems. We start with reviewing the semi-classical kinetic theory with Berry phase for a non-interacting ensemble of fermions -- a Berry Fermi gas -- which might be far-from-equilibrium. We particularly review the famous Berry phase contribution to the anomalous Hall current. We then provide a concrete and general path integral derivation for the semi-classical theory. Then we turn to the specific example of Weyl fermion, which exhibits the profound quantum phenomenon of chiral anomaly; we review how this quantum effect, and its closely related chiral magnetic effect and chiral vortical effect, arise from Berry phase in the semi-classical kinetic theory. We also discuss how Lorentz symmetry in the kinetic theory of Weyl fermion, seemly violated by the Berry phase term, is realized non-trivially; we provide a physical interpretation for this non-trivial realization, and discuss its mathematical foundation in Wigner translation. Next, we turn towards interacting fermionic systems. We consider Fermi liquid near equilibrium, and propose the Berry Fermi liquid theory -- the extension to Landau Fermi liquid theory incorporating Berry phase (and other) effects. In our proposed Berry Fermi liquid theory, we can show the Berry phase is a Fermi surface property, qualitatively unmodified by interactions. But there also arise new effects from interactions, most notably the emergent electric dipole moment which contributes to the anomalous Hall current in addition to the usual Berry phase contribution. We develop an extension of the Landau Fermi liquid theory to systems of interacting fermions with non-trivial Berry curvature. We propose a kinetic equation and a constitutive relation for the electromagnetic current that together encode the linear response of such systems to external electromagnetic perturbations, to leading and next-to-leading orders in the expansion over the frequency and wave number of the perturbations. Using a covariant formalism, we construct a chiral kinetic theory Lorentz invariant to order $\mathcal O(\hbar)$ which includes collisions. We find a new contribution to the particle number current due to the side jumps required by the conservation of angular momentum during collisions. We also find a conserved symmetric stress-energy tensor as well as the $H$-function obeying Boltzmann's $H$-theorem. In this paper, the microwave pulse propagation transferred through a left-handed transmission line using Complementary Omega-Like Structures (COLS) loaded was studied. There was a stop band in transmission from 5.6GHz to 6.1GHz, and the anomalous dispersion was causes in this band. Negative group velocity corresponds to the case in which the peak of the pulse exited before the peak of the incident pulse had entered the sample. The negative group velocity reached (-0.27c~-1.85c).

We show that Lorentz invariance is realized nontrivially in the classical action of a massless spin-$\frac12$ particle with definite helicity. We find that the ordinary Lorentz transformation is modified by a shift orthogonal to the boost vector and the particle momentum. The shift ensures angular momentum conservation in particle collisions and implies a nonlocality of the collision term in the Lorentz-invariant kinetic theory due to side jumps. We consider fermionic (Dirac or Majorana) cold thermal relic dark-matter coupling to standard-model particles through the effective dimension-5 Higgs portal operators $\Lambda^{-1} \ \mathcal{O}_{\text{DM}} \cdot H^\dagger H$, where $\mathcal{O}_{\text{DM}}$ is an admixture of scalar $\bar\chi\chi$ and pseudoscalar $\bar\chi i\gamma_5 \chi$ DM operators. Utilizing the relic abundance requirement to fix the couplings, we consider direct detection and invisible Higgs width constraints, and map out the remaining allowed parameter space of dark-matter mass and the admixture of scalar and pseudoscalar couplings. We emphasize a subtlety which has not previously been carefully studied in the context of the EFT approach, in which an effect arising due to electroweak symmetry breaking can cause a na\"ively pure pseudoscalar coupling to induce a scalar coupling at higher order, which has important implications for direct detection bounds. Consider a linear programming problem with n primal and m dual variables paired with n dual and m primal slack variables respectively, and aggregately denote these variables and slack variables as a vector z of length 2(n+m). Unlike existing algorithms such as simplex and interior point methods solving linear programming by iteratively generating a sequence of feasible points to approach the optimal solution, the paper defines a function f mapping the constraint matrix and the right-hand side and objective vectors defining the linear programming problem to a binary vector of length n+m. It is shown that, under the uniqueness assumption of the optimal solution z* and for each (primal or dual) variable z_i, f_i is zero if and only if the optimal value z*_i is zero, and f_i is one if and only if z*_i is positive. Computation of f_i for each i consists of solving two groups of linear equations using O(m^2n) operations. Computing f_i is then non-iterative and independent of computing f_j for j <> i. Hence, at most O(m^2n^2) operations are required to compute f and consequently to solve the linear programming problem. If dark matter is a new species of particle produced in the early universe as a cold thermal relic (a weakly-interacting massive particle-WIMP), its present abundance, its scattering with matter in direct-detection experiments, its present-day annihilation signature in indirect-detection experiments, and its production and detection at colliders, depend crucially on the WIMP coupling to standard-model (SM) particles. It is usually assumed that the WIMP couples to the SM sector through its interactions with quarks and leptons. In this paper we explore the possibility that the WIMP coupling to the SM sector is via electroweak gauge and Higgs bosons. In the absence of an ultraviolet-complete particle-physics model, we employ effective field theory to describe the WIMP--SM coupling. We consider both scalars and Dirac fermions as possible dark-matter candidates. Starting with an exhaustive list of operators up to dimension 8, we present detailed calculation of dark-matter annihilations to all possible final states, including gamma gamma, gamma Z, gamma h, ZZ, Zh, W+ W-, hh, and f fbar, and demonstrate the correlations among them. We compute the mass scale of the effective field theory necessary to obtain the correct dark-matter mass density, and well as the resulting photon line signals.
