The EXperiment for Cryogenic Large-Aperture Intensity Mapping (EXCLAIM) is a balloon-borne telescope designed to survey star formation over cosmological time scales using intensity mapping in the 420 - 540 GHz frequency range. EXCLAIM uses a fully cryogenic telescope coupled to six on-chip spectrometers featuring kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) to achieve high sensitivity, allowing for fast integration in dark atmospheric windows. The telescope receiver is cooled to $\approx$ 1.7 K by immersion in a superfluid helium bath and enclosed in a superfluid-tight shell with a meta-material anti-reflection coated silicon window. In addition to the optics and the spectrometer package, the receiver contains the magnetic shielding, the cryogenic segment of the spectrometer readout, and the sub-Kelvin cooling system. A three-stage continuous adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator (CADR) keeps the detectors at 100 mK while a $^4$He sorption cooler provides a 900 mK thermal intercept for mechanical suspensions and coaxial cables. The K-12 teacher workforce is relatively large--each year, nearly 4 million teachers are employed in U.S. elementary and secondary schools. Turnover in these schools is high relative to earlier periods--16% of teachers left their school in the 2021-2022 academic year. In addition, there is evidence that teacher quality standards have been lowered in order to fill open positions. The problem of teacher turnover raises a number of recruitment and retention issues of interest to policymakers. The Higher Education Act (HEA) is the main federal law containing policies designed to address these issues. Title II of the HEA authorizes grant support for schools that prepare new teachers. Title IV of the HEA authorizes financial support to encourage people to stay in the teaching profession in the form of student loan forgiveness and other benefits. Congressional consideration of potentially reauthorizing the HEA is ongoing, with the introduction of numerous bills to amend current law and address teacher recruitment and retention. This report describes the history of federal teacher recruitment and retention policy, current policies in this area, and related issues that may arise as Congress considers reauthorizing the HEA.

Evidence has emerged for a stochastic signal correlated among 67 pulsars within the 15-year pulsar-timing data set compiled by the NANOGrav collaboration. Similar signals have been found in data from the European, Indian, Parkes, and Chinese PTAs. This signal has been interpreted as indicative of the presence of a nanohertz stochastic gravitational wave background. To explore the internal consistency of this result we investigate how the recovered signal strength changes as we remove the pulsars one by one from the data set. We calculate the signal strength using the (noise-marginalized) optimal statistic, a frequentist metric designed to measure correlated excess power in the residuals of the arrival times of the radio pulses. We identify several features emerging from this analysis that were initially unexpected. The significance of these features, however, can only be assessed by comparing the real data to synthetic data sets. After conducting identical analyses on simulated data sets, we do not find anything inconsistent with the presence of a stochastic gravitational wave background in the NANOGrav 15-year data. The methodologies developed here can offer additional tools for application to future, more sensitive data sets. While this analysis provides an internal consistency check of the NANOGrav results, it does not eliminate the necessity for additional investigations that could identify potential systematics or uncover unmodeled physical phenomena in the data., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables

There is widespread concern about the negative impacts of social media feed ranking algorithms on political polarization. Leveraging advancements in large language models (LLMs), we develop an approach to re-rank feeds in real-time to test the effects of content that is likely to polarize: expressions of antidemocratic attitudes and partisan animosity (AAPA). In a preregistered 10-day field experiment on X/Twitter with 1,256 consented participants, we increase or decrease participants' exposure to AAPA in their algorithmically curated feeds. We observe more positive outparty feelings when AAPA exposure is decreased and more negative outparty feelings when AAPA exposure is increased. Exposure to AAPA content also results in an immediate increase in negative emotions, such as sadness and anger. The interventions do not significantly impact traditional engagement metrics such as re-post and favorite rates. These findings highlight a potential pathway for developing feed algorithms that mitigate affective polarization by addressing content that undermines the shared values required for a healthy democracy.

Pulsar timing array observations have found evidence for an isotropic gravitational wave background with the Hellings-Downs angular correlations, expected from general relativity. This interpretation hinges on the measured shape of the angular correlations, which is predominately quadrupolar under general relativity. Here we explore a more flexible parameterization: we expand the angular correlations into a sum of Legendre polynomials and use a Bayesian analysis to constrain their coefficients with the 15-year pulsar timing data set collected by the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav). When including Legendre polynomials with multipoles $\ell \geq 2$, we only find a significant signal in the quadrupole with an amplitude consistent with general relativity and non-zero at the $\sim 95\%$ confidence level and a Bayes factor of 200. When we include multipoles $\ell \leq 1$, the Bayes factor evidence for quadrupole correlations decreases by more than an order of magnitude due to evidence for a monopolar signal at approximately 4 nHz which has also been noted in previous analyses of the NANOGrav 15-year data. Further work needs to be done in order to better characterize the properties of this monopolar signal and its effect on the evidence for quadrupolar angular correlations., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

Imaging mass spectrometry (IMS) is a powerful tool for untargeted, highly multiplexed molecular mapping of tissue in biomedical research. IMS offers a means of mapping the spatial distributions of molecular species in biological tissue with unparalleled chemical specificity and sensitivity. However, most IMS platforms are not able to achieve microscopy-level spatial resolution and lack cellular morphological contrast, necessitating subsequent histochemical staining, microscopic imaging and advanced image registration steps to enable molecular distributions to be linked to specific tissue features and cell types. Here, we present a virtual histological staining approach that enhances spatial resolution and digitally introduces cellular morphological contrast into mass spectrometry images of label-free human tissue using a diffusion model. Blind testing on human kidney tissue demonstrated that the virtually stained images of label-free samples closely match their histochemically stained counterparts (with Periodic Acid-Schiff staining), showing high concordance in identifying key renal pathology structures despite utilizing IMS data with 10-fold larger pixel size. Additionally, our approach employs an optimized noise sampling technique during the diffusion model's inference process to reduce variance in the generated images, yielding reliable and repeatable virtual staining. We believe this virtual staining method will significantly expand the applicability of IMS in life sciences and open new avenues for mass spectrometry-based biomedical research., Comment: 33 Pages, 6 Figures

Dynamic in-hand manipulation remains a challenging task for soft robotic systems that have demonstrated advantages in safe compliant interactions but struggle with high-speed dynamic tasks. In this work, we present SWIFT, a system for learning dynamic tasks using a soft and compliant robotic hand. Unlike previous works that rely on simulation, quasi-static actions and precise object models, the proposed system learns to spin a pen through trial-and-error using only real-world data without requiring explicit prior knowledge of the pen's physical attributes. With self-labeled trials sampled from the real world, the system discovers the set of pen grasping and spinning primitive parameters that enables a soft hand to spin a pen robustly and reliably. After 130 sampled actions per object, SWIFT achieves 100% success rate across three pens with different weights and weight distributions, demonstrating the system's generalizability and robustness to changes in object properties. The results highlight the potential for soft robotic end-effectors to perform dynamic tasks including rapid in-hand manipulation. We also demonstrate that SWIFT generalizes to spinning items with different shapes and weights such as a brush and a screwdriver which we spin with 10/10 and 5/10 success rates respectively. We present the in-lab and on-sky performance for the upgraded 90 GHz focal plane of the Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS), which had four of its seven detector wafers updated during the austral winter of 2022. The update aimed to improve the transition-edge-sensor (TES) stability and bias range and to realize the high optical efficiency of the sensor design. Modifications included revised circuit terminations, electrical contact between the TES superconductor and the normal metal providing the bulk of the bolometer's heat capacity, and additional filtering on the TES bias lines. The upgrade was successful: 94% of detectors are stable down to 15% of the normal resistance, providing a wide overlapping range of bias voltages for all TESs on a wafer. The median telescope efficiency improved from $0.42^{+0.15}_{-0.22}$ to $0.60^{+0.10}_{-0.32}$ (68% quantiles). For the four upgraded wafers alone, median telescope efficiency increased to $0.65^{+0.06}_{-0.06}$. Given our efficiency estimate for the receiver optics, this telescope efficiency implies a detector efficiency exceeding $0.90$. In the age of digital healthcare, passively collected physical activity profiles from wearable sensors are a preeminent tool for evaluating health outcomes. In order to fully leverage the vast amounts of data collected through wearable accelerometers, we propose to use quantile functional regression to model activity profiles as distributional outcomes through quantile responses, which can be used to evaluate activity level differences across covariates based on any desired distributional summary. Our proposed framework addresses two key problems not handled in existing distributional regression literature. First, we use spline mixed model formulations in the basis space to model nonparametric effects of continuous predictors on the distributional response. Second, we address the underlying missingness problem that is common in these types of wearable data but typically not addressed. We show that the missingness can induce bias in the subject-specific distributional summaries that leads to biased distributional regression estimates and even bias the frequently used scalar summary measures, and introduce a nonparametric function-on-function modeling approach that adjusts for each subject's missingness profile to address this problem. We evaluate our nonparametric modeling and missing data adjustment using simulation studies based on realistically simulated activity profiles and use it to gain insights into adolescent activity profiles from the Teen Environment and Neighborhood study.

Transitioning from quantum computation on physical qubits to quantum computation on encoded, logical qubits can improve the error rate of operations, and will be essential for realizing valuable quantum computational advantages. Using a neutral atom quantum processor with 256 qubits, each an individual Ytterbium atom, we demonstrate the entanglement of 24 logical qubits using the distance-two [[4,2,2]] code, simultaneously detecting errors and correcting for lost qubits. We also implement the Bernstein-Vazirani algorithm with up to 28 logical qubits encoded in the [[4,1,2]] code, showing better-than-physical error rates. We demonstrate fault-tolerant quantum computation in our approach, guided by the proposal of Gottesman (2016), by performing repeated loss correction for both structured and random circuits encoded in the [[4,2,2]] code. Finally, since distance-two codes can correct qubit loss, but not other errors, we show repeated loss and error correction using the distance-three [[9,1,3]] Bacon-Shor code. There is a growing need to understand how digital systems can support clinical decision-making, particularly as artificial intelligence (AI) models become increasingly complex and less human-interpretable. This complexity raises concerns about trustworthiness, impacting safe and effective adoption of such technologies. Improved understanding of decision-making processes and requirements for explanations coming from decision support tools is a vital component in providing effective explainable solutions. This is particularly relevant in the data-intensive, fast-paced environments of intensive care units (ICUs). To explore these issues, group interviews were conducted with seven ICU clinicians, representing various roles and experience levels. Thematic analysis revealed three core themes: (T1) ICU decision-making relies on a wide range of factors, (T2) the complexity of patient state is challenging for shared decision-making, and (T3) requirements and capabilities of AI decision support systems. We include design recommendations from clinical input, providing insights to inform future AI systems for intensive care.

Distributed phased arrays have recently garnered interest in applications such as satellite communications and high-resolution remote sensing. High-performance coherent distributed operations such as distributed beamforming are dependent on the ability to synchronize the spatio-electrical states of the elements in the array to the order of the operational wavelength, so that coherent signal summation can be achieved at any arbitrary target destination. In this paper, we address the fundamental challenge of precise distributed array element localization to enable coherent operation, even in complex environments where the array may not be capable of directly estimating all nodal link distances. We employ a two-way time transfer technique to synchronize the nodes of the array and perform internode ranging. We implement the classical multidimensional scaling algorithm to recover a decentralized array geometry from a set of range estimates. We also establish the incomplete set of range estimates as a multivariable non-convex optimization problem, and define the differential evolution algorithm which searches the solution space to complete the set of ranges. We experimentally demonstrate wireless localization using a spectrally-sparse pulsed two-tone waveform with 40 MHz tone separation in a laboratory environment, achieving a mean localization error vector magnitude of 0.82 mm in an environment with an average link SNR of 34 dB, theoretically supporting distributed beamforming operation up to 24.3 GHz., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures. Sparse Autoencoders (SAEs) are a promising approach for extracting neural network representations by learning a sparse and overcomplete decomposition of the network's internal activations. However, SAEs are traditionally trained considering only activation values and not the effect those activations have on downstream computations. This limits the information available to learn features, and biases the autoencoder towards neglecting features which are represented with small activation values but strongly influence model outputs. To address this, we introduce Gradient SAEs (g-SAEs), which modify the $k$-sparse autoencoder architecture by augmenting the TopK activation function to rely on the gradients of the input activation when selecting the $k$ elements. For a given sparsity level, g-SAEs produce reconstructions that are more faithful to original network performance when propagated through the network. Additionally, we find evidence that g-SAEs learn latents that are on average more effective at steering models in arbitrary contexts. By considering the downstream effects of activations, our approach leverages the dual nature of neural network features as both $\textit{representations}$, retrospectively, and $\textit{actions}$, prospectively. While previous methods have approached the problem of feature discovery primarily focused on the former aspect, g-SAEs represent a step towards accounting for the latter as well., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures. Thermal nonequilibrium (TNE) is a condition of the plasma in the solar corona in which the local rate of energy loss due to radiation increases to the point that it cannot be sustained by the various heating terms acting on the plasma, precluding the existence of a steady state. The limit cycles of precipitation and evaporation that result from TNE have been simulated in 1D models of coronal loops, as well as 2D and 3D models of the solar chromosphere and lower corona. However, a careful study of TNE in the solar wind has not been performed until now. Here we demonstrate that for suitable combinations of local and global heating rates it is possible for the plasma to exhibit a TNE condition, even in the context of a transonic solar wind with appreciable mass and energy fluxes. This implies limits on the amount of foot-point heating that can be withstood under steady-state conditions in the solar wind, and may help to explain the variability of solar wind streams that emanate from regions of highly concentrated magnetic flux on the solar surface. The implications of this finding pertain to various sources of high-density solar wind, including plumes that form above regions of mixed magnetic polarity in polar coronal holes and the slow solar wind (SSW) that emanates from coronal hole boundaries.

Many approaches have been used to model chordae tendineae geometries in finite element simulations of atrioventricular heart valves. Unfortunately, current "functional" chordae tendineae geometries lack fidelity that would be helpful when informing clinical decisions. The objectives of this work are (i) to improve synthetic chordae tendineae geometry fidelity to consider branching and (ii) to define how the chordae tendineae geometry affects finite element simulations of valve closure. In this work, we develop an open-source method to construct synthetic chordae tendineae geometries in the SlicerHeart Extension of 3D Slicer. The generated geometries are then used in FEBio finite element simulations of atrioventricular valve function to evaluate how variations in chordae tendineae geometry influence valve behavior. Effects are evaluated using functional and mechanical metrics. Our findings demonstrated that altering the chordae tendineae geometry of a stereotypical mitral valve led to changes in clinically relevant valve metrics and valve mechanics. Specifically, cross sectional area had the most influence over valve closure metrics, followed by chordae tendineae density, length, radius and branches. We then used this information to showcase the flexibility of our new workflow by altering the chordae tendineae geometry of two additional geometries (mitral valve with annular dilation and tricuspid valve) to improve finite element predictions. This study presents a flexible, open-source method for generating synthetic chordae tendineae with realistic branching structures. Further, we establish relationships between the chordae tendineae geometry and valve functional/mechanical metrics. The conditional average treatment effect (CATE) is a commonly targeted statistical parameter for measuring the mean effect of a treatment conditional on covariates. However, the CATE will fail to capture effects of treatments beyond differences in conditional expectations. Inspired by causal forests for CATE estimation, we develop a forest-based method to estimate the conditional kernel treatment effect (CKTE), based on the recently introduced Distributional Random Forest (DRF) algorithm. Adapting the splitting criterion of DRF, we show how one forest fit can be used to obtain a consistent and asymptotically normal estimator of the CKTE, as well as an approximation of its sampling distribution. This allows to study the difference in distribution between control and treatment group and thus yields a more comprehensive understanding of the treatment effect. In particular, this enables the construction of a conditional kernel-based test for distributional effects with provably valid type-I error. We show the effectiveness of the proposed estimator in simulations and apply it to the 1991 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) pension data to study the effect of 401(k) eligibility on wealth.

Understanding material failure is critical for designing stronger and lighter structures by identifying weaknesses that could be mitigated. Existing full-physics numerical simulation techniques involve trade-offs between speed, accuracy, and the ability to handle complex features like varying boundary conditions, grid types, resolution, and physical models. We present the first foundation model specifically designed for predicting material failure, leveraging large-scale datasets and a high parameter count (up to 3B) to significantly improve the accuracy of failure predictions. In addition, a large language model provides rich context embeddings, enabling our model to make predictions across a diverse range of conditions. Unlike traditional machine learning models, which are often tailored to specific systems or limited to narrow simulation conditions, our foundation model is designed to generalize across different materials and simulators. This flexibility enables the model to handle a range of material properties and conditions, providing accurate predictions without the need for retraining or adjustments for each specific case. Our model is capable of accommodating diverse input formats, such as images and varying simulation conditions, and producing a range of outputs, from simulation results to effective properties. It supports both Cartesian and unstructured grids, with design choices that allow for seamless updates and extensions as new data and requirements emerge. Let $\mathsf{E}/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve. By the modularity theorem, it admits a surjection from a modular curve $X_0(N) \to \mathsf{E}$, and the minimal degree among such maps is called the modular degree of $\mathsf{E}$. By the Mordell--Weil Theorem, $\mathsf{E}(\mathbb{Q})\simeq \mathbb{Z}^r \oplus T$ for some nonnegative integer $r$ and some finite group $T$. Watkins's Conjecture predicts that $2^r$ divides the modular degree, thus suggesting an intriguing link between these geometrically- and algebraically-defined invariants. Model-based iterative reconstruction plays a key role in solving inverse problems. However, the associated minimization problems are generally large-scale, ill-posed, nonsmooth, and sometimes even nonconvex, which present challenges in designing efficient iterative solvers and often prevent their practical use. Preconditioning methods can significantly accelerate the convergence of iterative methods. In some applications, computing preconditioners on-the-fly is beneficial. Moreover, forward models in image reconstruction are typically represented as operators, and the corresponding explicit matrices are often unavailable, which brings additional challenges in designing preconditioners. Therefore, for practical use, computing and applying preconditioners should be computationally inexpensive. This paper adapts the randomized Nystr\"{o}m approximation to compute effective preconditioners that accelerate image reconstruction without requiring an explicit matrix for the forward model. We leverage modern GPU computational platforms to compute the preconditioner on-the-fly. Moreover, we propose efficient approaches for applying the preconditioner to problems with nonsmooth regularizers. Our numerical results on image deblurring, super-resolution with impulsive noise, and computed tomography reconstruction demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed preconditioner., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables

The ADAPT-VQE algorithm is a promising method for generating a compact ansatz based on derivatives of the underlying cost function, and it yields accurate predictions of electronic energies for molecules. In this work we report the implementation and performance of ADAPT-VQE with our recently developed sparse wavefunction circuit solver (SWCS) in terms of accuracy and efficiency for molecular systems with up to 52 spin-orbitals. The SWCS can be tuned to balance computational cost and accuracy, which extends the application of ADAPT-VQE for molecular electronic structure calculations to larger basis sets and larger number of qubits. Using this tunable feature of the SWCS, we propose an alternative optimization procedure for ADAPT-VQE to reduce the computational cost of the optimization. By pre-optimizing a quantum simulation with a parameterized ansatz generated with ADAPT-VQE/SWCS, we aim to utilize the power of classical high-performance computing in order to minimize the work required on noisy intermediate-scale quantum hardware, which offers a promising path toward demonstrating quantum advantage for chemical applications., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

We present 5-1x10^7 Angstrom spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for twelve M dwarf stars covering spectral types M0-M8. Our SEDs are provided for community use as a sequel to the Measurements of the Ultraviolet Spectral Characteristics of Low-mass Exoplanetary Systems (MUSCLES) survey. The twelve stars include eight known exoplanet hosts and four stars chosen to fill out key parameter space in spectral type and rotation period. The SEDs are constructed from Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet spectroscopy and XMM Newton, Chandra and/or Swift X-ray observations and completed with various model data, including Lyman alpha reconstructions, PHOENIX optical models, APEC coronal models and Differential Emission Measure models in the currently-unobservable Extreme Ultraviolet. We provide a complete overview of the Mega-MUSCLES program, including a description of the observations, models, and SED construction. The SEDs are available as MAST High-Level Science Products and we describe the various data products here. We also present ensemble measurements from our sample that are of particular relevance to exoplanet science, including the high-energy fluxes in the habitable zone and the FUV/NUV ratio. Combined with MUSCLES, Mega-MUSCLES provides SEDs covering a wide range of M\,dwarf spectral types and ages such that suitable proxies for any M dwarf planet host of interest may be found in our sample. We recast move generators for solving board games as operations on compressed sets of strings. We aim for compressed representations with space sublinear in the number of game positions for interesting sets of positions, move generation in time roughly linear in the compressed size and membership tests in constant time. To the extent that we achieve these tradeoffs empirically, we can strongly solve board games in time sublinear in the state space. We demonstrate this concept with the game Breakthrough where we empirically realize compressed representations taking roughly $n^{0.5}$ to $n^{0.7}$ space to store relevant sets of $n$ positions., Comment: Submitted to Computers and Games 2024

Off-road environments pose significant perception challenges for high-speed autonomous navigation due to unstructured terrain, degraded sensing conditions, and domain-shifts among biomes. Learning semantic information across these conditions and biomes can be challenging when a large amount of ground truth data is required. In this work, we propose an approach that leverages a pre-trained Vision Transformer (ViT) with fine-tuning on a small (<500 images), sparse and coarsely labeled (<30% pixels) multi-biome dataset to predict 2D semantic segmentation classes. These classes are fused over time via a novel range-based metric and aggregated into a 3D semantic voxel map. We demonstrate zero-shot out-of-biome 2D semantic segmentation on the Yamaha (52.9 mIoU) and Rellis (55.5 mIoU) datasets along with few-shot coarse sparse labeling with existing data for improved segmentation performance on Yamaha (66.6 mIoU) and Rellis (67.2 mIoU). We propose in this work a framework for synergistic positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) reconstruction using a joint generative model as a penalty. We use a synergistic penalty function that promotes PET/CT pairs that are likely to occur together. The synergistic penalty function is based on a generative model, namely $\beta$-variational autoencoder ($\beta$-VAE). The model generates a PET/CT image pair from the same latent variable which contains the information that is shared between the two modalities. This sharing of inter-modal information can help reduce noise during reconstruction. Our result shows that our method was able to utilize the information between two modalities. The proposed method was able to outperform individually reconstructed images of PET (i.e., by maximum likelihood expectation maximization (MLEM)) and CT (i.e., by weighted least squares (WLS)) in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR). Safety Management Systems (SMSs) have been used in many safety-critical industries and are now being developed and deployed in the automated driving system (ADS)-equipped vehicle (AV) sector. Industries with decades of SMS deployment have established frameworks tailored to their specific context. Several frameworks for an AV industry SMS have been proposed or are currently under development. These frameworks borrow heavily from the aviation industry although the AV and aviation industries differ in many significant ways. In this context, there is a need to review the approach to develop an SMS that is tailored to the AV industry, building on generalized lessons learned from other safety-sensitive industries. A harmonized AV-industry SMS framework would establish a single set of SMS practices to address management of broad safety risks in an integrated manner and advance the establishment of a more mature regulatory framework. This paper outlines a proposed SMS framework for the AV industry based on robust taxonomy development and validation criteria and provides rationale for such an approach. Applications that run in large-scale data center networks (DCNs) rely on the DCN's ability to deliver application requests in a performant manner. DCNs expose a complex design and operational space, and network designers and operators care how different options along this space affect application performance. One might run controlled experiments and measure the corresponding application-facing performance, but such experiments become progressively infeasible at a large scale, and simulations risk yielding inaccurate or incomplete results. Instead, we show that we can predict application-facing performance through more easily measured network metrics. For example, network telemetry metrics (e.g., link utilization) can predict application-facing metrics (e.g., transfer latency). Through large-scale measurements of production networks, we study the correlation between the two types of metrics, and construct predictive, interpretable models that serve as a suggestive guideline to network designers and operators. We show that no single network metric is universally the best predictor (even though some prior work has focused on a single predictor). The detection of a stochastic gravitational wave background by pulsar timing arrays suggests the presence of a supermassive black hole binary population. Although the observed spectrum generally aligns with predictions from orbital evolution driven by gravitational wave emission in circular orbits, there is a discernible preference for a turnover at the lowest observed frequencies. This turnover could indicate a significant hardening phase, transitioning from early environmental influences to later stages predominantly influenced by gravitational wave emission. In the vicinity of these binaries, the ejection of stars or dark matter particles through gravitational three-body slingshots efficiently extracts orbital energy, leading to a low-frequency turnover in the spectrum. By analyzing the NANOGrav 15-year data, we assess how the gravitational wave spectrum depends on the initial inner galactic profile prior to disruption by binary ejections, accounting for a range of initial binary eccentricities. Our findings suggest a parsec-scale galactic center density around $10^6\,M_\odot/\textrm{pc}^3$ across most of the parameter space, offering insights into the environmental effects on black hole evolution and combined matter density near galaxy centers., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

Misclassification in binary outcomes is not uncommon and statistical methods to investigate its impact on policy-driving study results are lacking. While misclassifying binary outcomes is a statistically ubiquitous phenomena, we focus on misclassification in a public health application: vaccinations. One such study design in public health that addresses policy is the cluster controlled randomized trial (CCRT). A CCRT that measures the impact of a novel behavioral intervention on increasing vaccine uptake can be severely biased when the supporting data are incomplete vaccination records. In particular, these vaccine records more often may be prone to negative misclassification, that is, a clinic's record of an individual patient's vaccination status may be unvaccinated when, in reality, this patient was vaccinated outside of the clinic. With large nation-wide endeavors to encourage vaccinations without a gold-standard vaccine record system, sensitivity analyses that incorporate misclassification rates are promising for robust inference. In this work we introduce a novel extension of Bayesian logistic regression where we perturb the clinic size and vaccination count with random draws from expert-elicited prior distributions. These prior distributions represent the misclassification rates for each clinic that stochastically add unvaccinated counts to the observed vaccinated counts. These prior distributions are assigned for each clinic (the first level in a group-level randomized trial). We demonstrate this method with a data application from a CCRT evaluating the influence of a behavioral intervention on vaccination uptake among U.S. veterans. A simulation study is carried out demonstrating its estimation properties.

Robot haircare systems could provide a controlled and personalized environment that is respectful of an individual's sensitivities and may offer a comfortable experience. We argue that because of hair and hairstyles' often unique importance in defining and expressing an individual's identity, we should approach the development of assistive robot haircare systems carefully while considering various practical and ethical concerns and risks. In this work, we specifically list and discuss the consideration of hair type, expression of the individual's preferred identity, cost accessibility of the system, culturally-aware robot strategies, and the associated societal risks. Finally, we discuss the planned studies that will allow us to better understand and address the concerns and considerations we outlined in this work through interactions with both haircare experts and end-users. Large language models (LLMs) generate diverse, situated, persuasive texts from a plurality of potential perspectives, influenced heavily by their prompts and training data. As part of LLM adoption, we seek to characterize - and ideally, manage - the socio-cultural values that they express, for reasons of safety, accuracy, inclusion, and cultural fidelity. We present a validated approach to automatically (1) extracting heterogeneous latent value propositions from texts, (2) assessing resonance and conflict of values with texts, and (3) combining these operations to characterize the pluralistic value alignment of human-sourced and LLM-sourced textual data.

We present a centralized auction algorithm to solve the Multi-Depot Rural Postman Problem with Rechargeable and Reusable Vehicles (MD-RPP-RRV), focusing on rescheduling arc routing after vehicle failures. The problem involves finding heuristically obtained best feasible routes for multiple rechargeable and reusable vehicles with capacity constraints capable of performing multiple trips from multiple depots, with the possibility of vehicle failures. Our algorithm auctions the failed trips to active (non-failed) vehicles through local auctioning, modifying initial routes to handle dynamic vehicle failures efficiently. When a failure occurs, the algorithm searches for the best active vehicle to perform the failed trip and inserts the trip into that vehicle's route, which avoids a complete rescheduling and reduces the computational effort. We compare the algorithm's solutions against offline optimal solutions obtained from solving a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) formulation using the Gurobi solver; this formulation assumes that perfect information about the vehicle failures and failure times is given. The results demonstrate that the centralized auction algorithm produces solutions that are, in some cases, near optimal; moreover, the execution time for the proposed approach is much more consistent and is, for some instances, orders of magnitude less than the execution time of the Gurobi solver. The theoretical analysis provides an upper bound for the competitive ratio and computational complexity of our algorithm, offering a formal performance guarantee in dynamic failure scenarios.

It is essential to examine the physical or chemical properties of molecular gas in starburst galaxies to reveal the underlying mechanisms characterizing starbursts. We used non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) to extract individual molecular or physical components involved in the star formation process in NGC\,253. We used images of 148 transitions from 44 different species of the ALMA large program ALCHEMI. Additionally, we included the continuum images at ALMA Bands 3 and 7 from the same dataset. For the five NMF components (NF1--5), we obtained that their distributions correspond to various basic phenomena related to star formation: i) low-density gas extended through the galactic central molecular zone (NF2), ii) shocks (NF3), iii) starburst regions (NF4), and iv) young star-forming regions (NF5). The other component (NF1) is related to excitation; three components obtained by NMF (NF3, 1, and 5) show a strong dependence upon the upper state energies of transitions, and represent low-, intermediate-, and high-excitation, respectively. We also compared our results using principal component analysis (PCA) previously applied to the same dataset. Molecular components extracted from NMF are similar to the ones obtained from PCA. However, NMF is better at extracting components associated with a single physical component, while a single component in PCA usually contains information on multiple physical components. This is especially true for features with weak intensities like emission from outflows. In this paper, we study stability properties of solutions to scalar conservation laws with a class of non-convex fluxes. Using the theory of $a$-contraction with shifts, we show $L^2$-stability for shocks among a class of large perturbations, and give estimates on the weight coefficient $a$ in regimes where the shock amplitude is both large and small. Then, we use these estimates as a building block to show a uniqueness theorem under minimal entropy conditions for weak solutions to the conservation law via a modified front tracking algorithm. Reconfigurable devices have garnered significant attention for alleviating the scaling requirements of conventional CMOS technology, as they require fewer components to construct circuits with similar function. Prior works required continuous voltage application for programming gate terminal(s) in addition to the primary gate terminal, which undermines the advantages of reconfigurable devices in realizing compact and power-efficient integrated circuits. Here, we realize reconfigurable devices based on a single-gate field-effect transistor (FET) architecture by integrating semiconducting channels consisting of a monolayer film of highly aligned SWCNTs with a ferroelectric AlScN gate dielectric, all compatible with CMOS back-end-of-line (BEOL) processing. We demonstrated these SWCNT ferroelectric FETs (FeFETs) in a centimeter-scale array (~1 cm^2) comprising ~735 devices, with high spatial uniformity in device characteristics across the array. The devices exhibited ambipolar transfer characteristics with high on-state currents and current on/off ratios exceeding 10^5, demonstrating an excellent balance between electron and hole conduction (~270 {\mu}A/{\mu}m at a drain voltage of 3 V. When functioning as a non-volatile memory, the SWCNT FeFETs demonstrated large memory windows of 0.26 V/nm and 0.08 V/nm in the hole and electron conduction regions, respectively, combined with excellent retention behavior for up to 10^4 s. Repeated reconfiguration between p-FET and n-FET modes was also enabled by switching the spontaneous polarization in AlScN and operating the transistor within a voltage range below the coercive voltage. We revealed through circuit simulations that reconfigurable SWCNT transistors can realize ternary content-addressable memory (TCAM) with far fewer devices compared to circuits based on silicon CMOS technology or based on resistive non-volatile devices., Comment: 37 pages, 16 figures (5 main and 11 supplementary figures)

Creative writers have a love for their craft, yet AI systems using large language models (LLMs) offer the automation of significant parts of the writing process. So why do some creative writers choose to integrate AI into their workflows? To explore this, we interview and observe a writing session with 18 creative writers who already use AI regularly in their writing practice. Our findings reveal that creative writers are intentional about how they incorporate AI, making many deliberate decisions about when and how to engage AI based on the core values they hold about writing. These values, such as authenticity and craftsmanship, alongside writers' relationships with and use of AI influence the parts of writing over which they wish to maintain control. Through our analysis, we contribute a taxonomy of writer values, writer relationships with AI, and integration strategies, and discuss how these three elements interrelate.

Protein flexibility is crucial for understanding protein structures, functions, and dynamics, and it can be measured through experimental methods such as X-ray crystallography. Theoretical approaches have also been developed to predict B-factor values, which reflect protein flexibility. Previous models have made significant strides in analyzing B-factors by fitting experimental data. In this study, we propose a novel approach for B-factor prediction using differential geometry theory, based on the assumption that the intrinsic properties of proteins reside on a family of low-dimensional manifolds embedded within the high-dimensional space of protein structures. By analyzing the mean and Gaussian curvatures of a set of kernel-function-defined low-dimensional manifolds, we develop effective and robust multiscale differential geometry (mDG) models. Our mDG model demonstrates a 27\% increase in accuracy compared to the classical Gaussian network model (GNM) in predicting B-factors for a dataset of 364 proteins. Additionally, by incorporating both global and local protein features, we construct a highly effective machine learning model for the blind prediction of B-factors. Extensive least-squares approximations and machine learning-based blind predictions validate the effectiveness of the mDG modeling approach for B-factor prediction.

Background: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) plays a crucial role in image-guided radiotherapy, but artifacts and noise make them unsuitable for accurate dose calculation. Artificial intelligence methods have shown promise in enhancing CBCT quality to produce synthetic CT (sCT) images. However, existing methods either produce images of suboptimal quality or incur excessive time costs, failing to satisfy clinical practice standards. Methods and materials: We propose a novel hybrid conditional latent diffusion model for efficient and accurate CBCT-to-CT synthesis, named HC$^3$L-Diff. We employ the Unified Feature Encoder (UFE) to compress images into a low-dimensional latent space, thereby optimizing computational efficiency. Beyond the use of CBCT images, we propose integrating its high-frequency knowledge as a hybrid condition to guide the diffusion model in generating sCT images with preserved structural details. This high-frequency information is captured using our designed High-Frequency Extractor (HFE). During inference, we utilize denoising diffusion implicit model to facilitate rapid sampling. We construct a new in-house prostate dataset with paired CBCT and CT to validate the effectiveness of our method. Result: Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of sCT quality and generation efficiency. Moreover, our medical physicist conducts the dosimetric evaluations to validate the benefit of our method in practical dose calculation, achieving a remarkable 93.8% gamma passing rate with a 2%/2mm criterion, superior to other methods. Conclusion: The proposed HC$^3$L-Diff can efficiently achieve high-quality CBCT-to-CT synthesis in only over 2 mins per patient. In this study, we introduce FEET, a standardized protocol designed to guide the development and benchmarking of foundation models. While numerous benchmark datasets exist for evaluating these models, we propose a structured evaluation protocol across three distinct scenarios to gain a comprehensive understanding of their practical performance. We define three primary use cases: frozen embeddings, few-shot embeddings, and fully fine-tuned embeddings. Each scenario is detailed and illustrated through two case studies: one in sentiment analysis and another in the medical domain, demonstrating how these evaluations provide a thorough assessment of foundation models' effectiveness in research applications. Narrative data spans all disciplines and provides a coherent model of the world to the reader or viewer. Recent advancement in machine learning and Large Language Models (LLMs) have enable great strides in analyzing natural language. However, Large language models (LLMs) still struggle with complex narrative arcs as well as narratives containing conflicting information. Recent work indicates LLMs augmented with external knowledge bases can improve the accuracy and interpretability of the resulting models. In this work, we analyze the effectiveness of applying knowledge graphs (KGs) in understanding true-crime podcast data from both classical Natural Language Processing (NLP) and LLM approaches. We directly compare KG-augmented LLMs (KGLLMs) with classical methods for KG construction, topic modeling, and sentiment analysis. Additionally, the KGLLM allows us to query the knowledge base in natural language and test its ability to factually answer questions. We examine the robustness of the model to adversarial prompting in order to test the model's ability to deal with conflicting information. Finally, we apply classical methods to understand more subtle aspects of the text such as the use of hearsay and sentiment in narrative construction and propose future directions. Background: Breast density, as derived from mammographic images and defined by the American College of Radiology's Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS), is one of the strongest risk factors for breast cancer. Breast ultrasound (BUS) is an alternative breast cancer screening modality, particularly useful for early detection in low-resource, rural contexts. The purpose of this study was to explore an artificial intelligence (AI) model to predict BI-RADS mammographic breast density category from clinical, handheld BUS imaging. Methods: All data are sourced from the Hawaii and Pacific Islands Mammography Registry. We compared deep learning methods from BUS imaging, as well as machine learning models from image statistics alone. The use of AI-derived BUS density as a risk factor for breast cancer was then compared to clinical BI-RADS breast density while adjusting for age. The BUS data were split by individual into 70/20/10% groups for training, validation, and testing. Results: 405,120 clinical BUS images from 14.066 women were selected for inclusion in this study, resulting in 9.846 women for training (302,574 images), 2,813 for validation (11,223 images), and 1,406 for testing (4,042 images). On the held-out testing set, the strongest AI model achieves AUROC 0.854 predicting BI-RADS mammographic breast density from BUS imaging and outperforms all shallow machine learning methods based on image statistics. In cancer risk prediction, age-adjusted AI BUS breast density predicted 5-year breast cancer risk with 0.633 AUROC, as compared to 0.637 AUROC from age-adjusted clinical breast density. Conclusions: BI-RADS mammographic breast density can be estimated from BUS imaging with high accuracy using a deep learning model. Furthermore, we demonstrate that AI-derived BUS breast density is predictive of 5-year breast cancer risk in our population.

In logistics, the ability to quickly compute and execute pick-and-place motions from bins is critical to increasing productivity. We present Bin-Optimized Motion Planning (BOMP), a motion planning framework that plans arm motions for a six-axis industrial robot with a long-nosed suction tool to remove boxes from deep bins. BOMP considers robot arm kinematics, actuation limits, the dimensions of a grasped box, and a varying height map of a bin environment to rapidly generate time-optimized, jerk-limited, and collision-free trajectories. The optimization is warm-started using a deep neural network trained offline in simulation with 25,000 scenes and corresponding trajectories. Experiments with 96 simulated and 15 physical environments suggest that BOMP generates collision-free trajectories that are up to 58 % faster than baseline sampling-based planners and up to 36 % faster than an industry-standard Up-Over-Down algorithm, which has an extremely low 15 % success rate in this context. We initiate the study of untelegraphable encryption (UTE), founded on the no-telegraphing principle, which allows an encryptor to encrypt a message such that a binary string representation of the ciphertext cannot be decrypted by a user with the secret key, a task that is classically impossible. This is a natural relaxation of unclonable encryption, inspired by the recent work of Nehoran and Zhandry (ITCS 2024), who showed a computational separation between the no-cloning and no-telegraphing principles. In this work, we define and construct UTE information-theoretically in the plain model. Building off this, we give several applications of UTE and study the interplay of UTE with UE and well-studied tasks in quantum state learning, yielding the following contributions: - A construction of collusion-resistant UTE from standard secret-key encryption. We additionally show that hyper-efficient shadow tomography (HEST) is impossible assuming collusion-resistant UTE exists. By considering a relaxation of collusion-resistant UTE, we are able to show the impossibility of HEST assuming only pseudorandom state generators (which may not imply one-way functions). This almost completely answers an open inquiry of Aaronson (STOC 2019). - A construction of UTE from a one-shot message authentication code in the classical oracle model, such that there is an explicit attack that breaks UE security for an unbounded polynomial number of decryptors. - A construction of everlasting secure collusion-resistant UTE, where the decryptor adversary can run in unbounded time, in the quantum random oracle model (QROM), and formal evidence that a construction in the plain model is a challenging task. In this paper, we have developed a theory describing surface exciton polariton (SEPs) that accounts for the spatial dispersion of the dielectric constant connected with exciton momentum. Due to strong coupling between light and bulk excitons in the frequency separation, $\hbar\omega_{LT}$, between the longitudinal and transverse exciton, the SEP is formed and behaves at partially light and partially matter. The dispersion of the SEP was found through a combined solution of Maxwell's and Thomas-Hopfield's equations. The analytical theory describes SEPs at any bulk exciton/vacuum interface and provides its complete dispersion if one knows $\hbar\omega_{LT}$, the exciton effective mass, $M$, and the high frequency dielectric constant, $\kappa_\infty$. The presented theory is in excellent agreement with the only numerical modeling of this problem, which was conducted for SEPs at a ZnO/vacuum interface. Calculations show the spatial dispersion of the dielectric constant leads to rather small broadening of the photon-like quasi-particle and suggests using SEPs for long-range coherence transfer.

Reinforcement learning (RL) holds great promise for enabling autonomous acquisition of complex robotic manipulation skills, but realizing this potential in real-world settings has been challenging. We present a human-in-the-loop vision-based RL system that demonstrates impressive performance on a diverse set of dexterous manipulation tasks, including dynamic manipulation, precision assembly, and dual-arm coordination. Our approach integrates demonstrations and human corrections, efficient RL algorithms, and other system-level design choices to learn policies that achieve near-perfect success rates and fast cycle times within just 1 to 2.5 hours of training. We show that our method significantly outperforms imitation learning baselines and prior RL approaches, with an average 2x improvement in success rate and 1.8x faster execution. Through extensive experiments and analysis, we provide insights into the effectiveness of our approach, demonstrating how it learns robust, adaptive policies for both reactive and predictive control strategies. Our results suggest that RL can indeed learn a wide range of complex vision-based manipulation policies directly in the real world within practical training times. We hope this work will inspire a new generation of learned robotic manipulation techniques, benefiting both industrial applications and research advancements. Sharpness-Aware Minimization (SAM) has been demonstrated to improve the generalization performance of overparameterized models by seeking flat minima on the loss landscape through optimizing model parameters that incur the largest loss within a neighborhood. Nevertheless, such min-max formulations are computationally challenging especially when the problem is highly non-convex. Additionally, focusing only on the worst-case local solution while ignoring potentially many other local solutions may be suboptimal when searching for flat minima. In this work, we propose Tilted SAM (TSAM), a generalization of SAM inspired by exponential tilting that effectively assigns higher priority to local solutions that are flatter and that incur larger losses. TSAM is parameterized by a tilt hyperparameter t and reduces to SAM as t approaches infinity. We prove that (1) the TSAM objective is smoother than SAM and thus easier to optimize; and (2) TSAM explicitly favors flatter minima as t increases. This is desirable as flatter minima could have better generalization properties for certain tasks. We develop algorithms motivated by the discretization of Hamiltonian dynamics to solve TSAM. Empirically, TSAM arrives at flatter local minima and results in superior test performance than the baselines of SAM and ERM across a range of image and text tasks.

Modeling the intrinsic alignment (IA) of galaxies poses a challenge to weak lensing analyses. The Dark Energy Survey is expected to be less impacted by IA when limited to blue, star-forming galaxies. The cosmological parameter constraints from this blue cosmic shear sample are stable to IA model choice, unlike passive galaxies in the full DES Y3 sample, the goodness-of-fit is improved and the $\Omega_{m}$ and $S_8$ better agree with the cosmic microwave background. In this paper, we study the nonlinear wave modulation of arbitrary amplitude periodic traveling wave solutions of the Camassa-Holm (CH) equation. Slow modulations of wave trains is often described through Whitham's theory of modulations, which at leading order models the slow evolution of the fundamental wave characteristics (such as the wave's frequency, mass and momentum) through a disperionless system of quasi-linear partial differential equations. The modulational stability or instability of such a slowly modulated wave is considered to be determined by the hyperbolicity or ellipticity of this Whitham modulation system of equations. In work by Abenda \& Grava, the Whitham modulation system for the CH equation was derived through averaged Lagrangian methods and was further shown to always be hyperbolic (although strict hyperbolicity may fail). In this work, we provide an independent derivation of the Whitham modulation system for the CH equation through nonlinear WKB / multiple scales expansions. We further provide a rigorous connection between the Whitham modulation equations for the CH equation and the spectral stability of the underlying periodic wave train to localized (i.e. integrable on the line) perturbations. In particular, we prove that the strict hyperbolicity of the Whitham system implies spectral stability in a neighborhood of the origin in the spectral plane, i.e. spectral modulational stability. This reality impedes fundamental investigations of the nature of coronal heating, the generation of solar and stellar winds, and the impulsive release of energy into the solar system via flares and other eruptive phenomena. Resulting from advancements in large aperture solar coronagraphy, we report unprecedented maps of polarized spectra emitted at 1074 nm by Fe+12 atoms in the active corona. We detect clear signatures of the Zeeman effect that are produced by the coronal magnetic field along the optically thin path length of its formation. Our comparisons with global magnetohydrodynamic models highlight the valuable constraints that these measurements provide for coronal modeling efforts, which are anticipated to yield subsequent benefits for space weather research and forecasting., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures, published in Science Advances

We propose a novel method for evaluating the performance of a content search system that measures the semantic match between a query and the results returned by the search system. We introduce a metric called "on-topic rate" to measure the percentage of results that are relevant to the query. To achieve this, we design a pipeline that defines a golden query set, retrieves the top K results for each query, and sends calls to GPT 3.5 with formulated prompts. Drug discovery typically consists of multiple steps, including identifying a target protein key to a disease's etiology, validating that interacting with this target could prevent symptoms or cure the disease, discovering a small molecule or biologic therapeutic to interact with it, and optimizing the candidate molecule through a complex landscape of required properties. Drug discovery related tasks often involve prediction and generation while considering multiple entities that potentially interact, which poses a challenge for typical AI models. For this purpose we present MAMMAL - Molecular Aligned Multi-Modal Architecture and Language - a method that we applied to create a versatile multi-task multi-align foundation model that learns from large-scale biological datasets (2 billion samples) across diverse modalities, including proteins, small molecules, and genes. We introduce a prompt syntax that supports a wide range of classification, regression, and generation tasks. It allows combining different modalities and entity types as inputs and/or outputs. Our model handles combinations of tokens and scalars and enables the generation of small molecules and proteins, property prediction, and transcriptomic lab test predictions. We evaluated the model on 11 diverse downstream tasks spanning different steps within a typical drug discovery pipeline, where it reaches new SOTA in 9 tasks and is comparable to SOTA in 2 tasks. This performance is achieved while using a unified architecture serving all tasks, in contrast to the original SOTA performance achieved using tailored architectures.
