We successfully demonstrated a fully-managed, field-deployed, three-node QKD ring network with L1-OTNsec encryption, that employs a hybrid scheme of QKD and classical yet quantum-safe centrally-generated symmetric keys to support point-to-point and relay consumers.

This is a translation from French into English of Argand's "Reflexions sur la nouvelle th\'eorie des imaginaires, suivies d'une application \`a la d\'emonstration d'un th\'eor\`eme d'analise", published in 1815. Argand reprises the method of representing complex numbers as points in the plane, which he first introduced in 1806. He takes up complex addition, multiplication, division, root taking, and absolute value. He gives an early and perhaps the first valid proof of the fundamental theorem of algebra, assuming only that the absolute value of a polynomial with complex coefficients assumes an absolute minimum in the complex plane. Argand's proof is simple and direct, variants of it being reproduced by Cauchy and textbook writers throughout the nineteenth century., Comment: 10 pages. We study the torsion subgroup of the universal ordinary distribution related to a general number field. We describe a way to control this subgroup. We apply this method to the special case of an imaginary quadratic field, and we give examples of such fields where these torsion subgroups are non-trivial.

We give a necessary and sufficient "Galois descent" condition to the freeness of the Iwasawa module built from Sinnott's circular units. Then we describe explicit examples for which this condition is not fulfilled.

Iwasawa's classical asymptotical formula relates the orders of the $p$-parts $X_n$ of the ideal class groups along a $\ZM_p$-extension $F_\infty/F$ of a number field $F$, to Iwasawa structural invariants $\la$ and $\mu$ attached to the inverse limit $X_\infty=\limpro X_n$. It relies on "good" descent properties satisfied by $X_n$. If $F$ is abelian and $F_\infty$ is cyclotomic it is known that the $p$-parts of the orders of the global units modulo circular units $U_n/C_n$ are asymptotically equivalent to the $p$-parts of the ideal class numbers. This suggests that these quotients $U_n/C_n$, so to speak unit class groups, satisfy also good descent properties. We show this directly, i.e. without using Iwasawa's Main Conjecture.

For an abelian totally real number field $F$ and an odd prime number $p$ which splits totally in $F$, we present a functorial approach to special "$p$-units" previously built by D. Solomon using "wild" Euler systems. This allows us to prove a conjecture of Solomon on the annihilation of the $p$-class group of $F$ (in the particular context here), as well as related annihilation results and index formulae.

Given $F$ a real abelian field, $p$ an odd prime and $\chi$ any Dirichlet character of $F$ we give a method for computing the $\chi$-index $\displaystyle (H^1(G_S,\mathbb{Z}_p(r))^\chi: C^F(r)^\chi)$ where the Tate twist $r$ is an odd integer $r\geq 3$, the group $C^F(r)$ is the group of higher circular units, $G_S$ is the Galois group over $F$ of the maximal $S$ ramified algebraic extension of $F$, and $S$ is the set of places of $F$ dividing $p$. This $\chi$-index can now be computed in terms only of elementary arithmetic of finite fields $\FM_\ell$. The dynamics of a "peeling front" or an elastic line is studied under creep (constant load) conditions. Our experiments show an exponential dependence of the creep velocity on the inverse force (mass) applied. In particular, the dynamical correlations of the avalanche activity are discussed here. We compare various avalanche statistics to those of a line depinning model with non-local elasticity, and study various measures of the experimental avalanche-avalanche and temporal correlations such as the autocorrelation function of the released energy and aftershock activity. From all these we conclude, that internal avalanche dynamics seems to follow "line depinning" -like behavior, in rough agreement with the depinning model. Meanwhile, the correlations reveal subtle complications not implied by depinning theory. Continuous GPS and broadband seismic monitoring have revealed a variety of disparate slip patterns especially in shallow dipping subduction zones, among which regular earthquakes, slow slip events and silent quakes1,2. Slow slip events are sometimes accompanied by Non Volcanic Tremors (NVT), which origin remains unclear3, either related to fluid migration or to friction. The present understanding of the whole menagerie of slip patterns is based upon numerical simulations imposing ad hoc values of the rate and state parameters a and b4-6 derived from the temperature dependence of a and b of a wet granite gouge7. Here we investigate the influence of the cumulative slip on the frictional and acoustic patterns of a lab scale subduction zone. Shallow loud earthquakes (stick-slip events), medium depth slow, deeper silent quakes (smooth sliding oscillations) and deepest steady-state creep (continuous sliding) are reproduced by the ageing of contact interface with cumulative displacement8. The Acoustic Emission evolves with cumulative displacement and interface ageing, following a trend from strong impulsive events, similar to earthquake seismic signals, to a collection of smaller amplitude and longer duration signals, similar to Non Volcanic Tremors. NVT emerge as the recollection of the local unstable behaviour of the contact interface globally evolving towards the stable sliding regime.

Let $F$ be a number field, abelian over the rational field, and fix a odd prime number $p$. Consider the cyclotomic $Z_p$-extension $F_\infty/F$ and denote $F_n$ the ${n}^{\rm th}$ finite subfield and $C_n$ its group of circular units. Then the Galois groups $G_{m,n}=\Gal(F_m/F_n)$ act naturally on the $C_m$'s (for any $m\geq n>> 0$). We compute the Tate cohomology groups $\Hha^i(G_{m,n}, C_m)$ for $i=-1,0$ without assuming anything else neither on $F$ nor on $p$.

We analyse the statistical pattern of seismicity before a 1-2 103 m3 chalk cliff collapse on the Normandie ocean shore, Western France. We show that a power law acceleration of seismicity rate and energy in both 40 Hz-1.5 kHz and 2 Hz-10kHz frequency range, is defined on 3 order of magnitude, within 2 hours from the collapse time. Simultaneously, the average size of the seismic events increases toward the time to failure. These in-situ results are derived from the only station located within one rupture length distance from the rock fall rupture plane. They mimic the "critical point" like behavior recovered from physical and numerical experiments before brittle failures and tertiary creep failures. Our analysis of this first seismic monitoring data of a cliff collapse suggests that the thermodynamic phase transition models for failure may apply for cliff collapse.

We have devised an original laboratory experiment where we investigate the frictional behaviour of a single crystal salt slider over a large number of deformation cycles. Because of its physical properties, salt, a surrogate for natural faults, allows for friction and plastic deformation and pressure solution creep to be efficient on the same timescale. During the same experiment, we observe a continuous change of the frictional behaviour of the slider under constant conditions of stiffness, temperature and loading velocity. The stick-slip regime is progressively vanishing, eventually reaching the stable sliding regime. Concomitantly, the contact interface, observed under the microscope, develops a striated morphology with contact asperities increase in length and width, arguing for an increase in the critical slip distance dc. Complementary experiments including velocity jumps show that the frictional parameters of the rate and state friction law, a and b, progressively vanish with the cumulative slip. The sizes of snow slab failure that trigger snow avalanches are power-law distributed. Such a power-law probability distribution function has also been proposed to characterize different landslide types. In order to understand this scaling for gravity driven systems, we introduce a two-threshold 2-d cellular automaton, in which failure occurs irreversibly. Taking snow slab avalanches as a model system, we find that the sizes of the largest avalanches just preceeding the lattice system breakdown are power law distributed. By tuning the maximum value of the ratio of the two failure thresholds our model reproduces the range of power law exponents observed for land-, rock- or snow avalanches. We present a statistical analysis of the acoustic emissions induced by dislocation motion during the creep of ice single crystals. The recorded acoustic waves provide an indirect measure of the inelastic energy dissipated during dislocation motion. Compression and torsion creep experiments indicate that viscoplastic deformation, even in the steady-state (secondary creep), is a complex and inhomogeneous process characterized by avalanches in the motion of dislocations. The distribution of avalanche sizes, identified with the acoustic wave amplitude (or the acoustic wave energy), is found to follow a power law with a cutoff at large amplitudes which depends on the creep stage (primary, secondary, tertiary). These results suggest that viscoplastic deformation in ice and possibly in other materials could be described in the framework of non-equilibrium critical phenomena.

The viscoplastic deformation (creep) of crystalline materials under constant stress involves the motion of a large number of interacting dislocations. Analytical methods and sophisticated `dislocation-dynamics' simulations have proved very effective in the study of dislocation patterning, and have led to macroscopic constitutive laws of plastic deformation. Yet, a statistical analysis of the dynamics of an assembly of interacting dislocations has not hitherto been performed. Here we report acoustic emission measurements on stressed ice single crystals, the results of which indicate that dislocations move in a scale-free intermittent fashion. This result is confirmed by numerical simulations of a model of interacting dislocations that successfully reproduces the main features of the experiment. We find that dislocations generate a slowly evolving configuration landscape which coexists with rapid collective rearrangements. These rearrangements involve a comparatively small fraction of the dislocations and lead to an intermittent behavior of the net plastic response. This basic dynamical picture appears to be a generic feature in the deformation of many other materials. Moreover, it should provide a framework for discussing fundamental aspects of plasticity, that goes beyond standard mean-field approaches that see plastic deformation as a smooth laminar flow.

We propose a numerical model to study the viscoplastic deformation of ice single crystals. We consider long-range elastic interactions among dislocations, the possibility of mutual annihilation, and a multiplication mechanism representing the activation of Frank-Read sources due to dislocation pinning. The overdamped equations of motion for a collection of dislocations are integrated numerically using different externally applied stresses. Using this approach we analyze the avalanche-like rearrangements of dislocations during the dynamic evolution. We observe a power law distribution of avalanche sizes which we compare with acoustic emission experiments in ice single crystals under creep deformation. We emphasize the connections of our model with non-equilibrium phase transitions and critical phenomena.
