Neutron radiation exposure is one of the main challenges faced during space missions. There is a critical need for advanced lightweight radiation shielding materials. Two-dimensional (2D) boron nitride nanoplatelets (BNNP) are excellent candidates for polymer matrix nanofillers due to their superior neutron shielding and thermal and mechanical properties. Furthermore, the 2D material anisotropic behavior unlocks the potential for composite property tailoring. This study fabricated ultra- lightweight lamellar BNNP foams (density 0.05 g cm–3 and 97.5% porous) via freeze-drying processing. The neutron shielding effectiveness or mass absorption coefficient of the BNNP foams with walls perpendicular to the direction of the radiation source was 14.47 cm2 g–1, while that of the foam with parallel configuration was only 8.51 cm2 g–1. The orientation-dependent neutron radiation shielding properties were modeled using the Beer-Lambert law for porous composite materials. The BNNP foam in this study has the potential to benefit advanced tailorable radiation shielding technologies for future aerospace missions.

Efforts to lightweight neutron absorbing composites are limited by incomplete understandings of the interaction between absorbing particles and their matrices. In this study, analytical models and a more physically representative simulation evaluated the penalty to neutron absorbing performance due to neutron channeling between large absorbing particles. Models and simulation agreed that B4C particles smaller than 100μm and especially those smaller than 10μm did not cause excessive neutron channeling. A more comprehensive neutron absorbing composite design metric – boron-10 equivalent areal density, which considers the particle size penalty and the matrix contribution to absorptivity – was introduced and used to estimate lightweighting via matrix substitution. Calculations using this new metric showed that a non-absorbing Mg matrix reduced mass by up to 35% over Al, constrained by the difference in mass density, while an absorbing Mg–Li matrix reduced mass by up to 60%, exceeding the difference in mass densities alone. Measurement of apparent absorber areal density through two experimental techniques – foil activation and direct counting – validated estimated absorber areal density as a neutron absorbing composite design metric. This updated understanding of the particle size penalty, newly introduced design metric, and experimental validation demonstrate a path to lightweight neutron absorbing composites.

The health effects of galactic cosmic radiation are a serious impediment to crewed exploration of the solar system. OLTARIS, an interface for the 3DHZETRN deterministic radiation transport code, was used to assess the response of aerospace materials to this constant radiation exposure. Traditional aerospace structural materials like aluminum can, after a certain mass, increase the health effects of such radiation. However, materials with lower atomic mass may mitigate this build-up in secondary radiation with increasing areal density. As such, lower atomic mass structural alloys of magnesium and magnesium–lithium are promising candidates. These alloys may reduce the mass of structures when substituted for aluminum alloys. Reinforcement with boron carbide could further reduce atomic mass while also improving the mechanical properties of such lightweight alloys. This study found that the lower atomic mass of these materials increased nuclear fragmentation upon cosmic radiation interactions, leading to a softening of the secondary (neutron) radiation spectra. This softened spectra reduced the effective dose equivalent, a measure of health effects, for magnesium(-lithium) alloys and their boron carbide-reinforced composites when compared to aluminum.

Extreme space environments such as space vacuum, radiation, thermal extremes and cycles, jagged lunar dust, microgravity, micrometeoroids and orbit debris (MMOD), thrust plume ejecta, and their synergistically-adverse effects are difficult challenges for safe and sustainable space exploration to outer planets and satellites. Prolonged space radiation exposure embrittles materials and structures and abrasive jagged dust particles aggressively wear and erode moving parts leading to premature failure. To counter or even alleviate such potential failures, robust and exceptional materials are needed to make NASA missions including Artemis program sustainable with minimum service and repair needs. This study reports that boron-containing inclusion, B4C, can improve wear resistance and radiation shielding/resistance of aluminum alloy (Al6061) significantly to extend the service life in extreme space environments. With increasing B4C inclusions, the tensile strength increased up to 20 vol% at both room temperature and an elevated temperature (200˚C) while thermal conductivity decreased gradually as a function of B4C concentration. The neutron shielding effectiveness increased more than 110 times when 50 vol% B4C is incorporated in Al6061 when compared with the pristine Al6061. The shielding effectiveness under galactic cosmic rays (GCR) and solar particle events (SPE) was also studied computationally using on-line tool for the assessment of radiation in space (OLTARIS). By adding B4C, the adverse effect caused by secondary radiation through the Al6061 matrix was effectively suppressed to improve the shielding effectiveness against GCR and SPE. The presence of boron in B4C was the main reason for the enhanced radiation shielding capability against neutron, GCR, and SPE environments.

Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) have attracted attention for their predicted extraordinary properties; yet, challenges in synthesis and processing have stifled progress on macroscopic materials. Recent advances have led to the production of highly pure BNNTs. Here we report that neat BNNTs dissolve in chlorosulfonic acid (CSA) and form birefringent liquid crystal domains at concentrations above 170 ppmw. These tactoidal domains merge into millimeter- sized regions upon light sonication in capillaries. Cryogenic electron microscopy directly shows nematic alignment of BNNTs in solution. BNNT liquid crystals can be processed into aligned films and extruded into neat BNNT fibers. This study of nematic liquid crystals of BNNTs demonstrates their ability to form macroscopic materials to be used in high- performance applications.

The ability to utilize regolith would support human missions to the Moon and Mars by both stabilizing the surface as well as the use of indigenous resources. Precision landing requirements include surface stabilization to prevent damage or contamination due to regolith projectiles as a result of plume interaction with regolith. The use of indigenous resources rather than hauling materials from Earth appears to be economically a palatable option by converting indigenous resources to usable products. However, such activities have new technical challenges to overcome the issues related to lunar environmental conditions, a wide range of temperature fluctuation, extremely high vacuum, and electrostatically charged fine regolith dusts. For both the regolith sintering and extraction of resources onsite, a Cassegrain solar concentrator was studied for not only sintering lunar regolith into a hardened stabilized surface, but also other multiple applications. This report illustrates a Cassegrain solar concentrator that has multi-functional capabilities for space missions. Proper design and implementation of high-performance lightweight composite materials for the primary mirror of the Cassegrain concentrator can offer multiple capabilities to be performed on the Moon. The multiple applications studied with Cassegrain concentrators are (1) Solar sintering for landing pad and habitats, (2) Harvest of volatiles: H2O, O2, H2, and He-3, (3) Space antenna for telemetry and telecommunication, and (4) Space telescope with 20-meter aperture that exceeds the space telescopes to date in terms of the State-of-Art (SOA) in resolution and aperture diameter. In this study, a key emphasis was placed on the NASA Langley-developed boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) nanocomposite technology which is ideal for the segmented primary mirror structure of the Cassegrain system because it promises a very low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and negligible Poisson ratio. Also, BNNT nanocomposites offer several noticeable benefits, such as light weight, radiation shielding capability, and mechanical strength for structural applications. Additionally, the NASA Langley-developed bullet-like micro-spectrometer and electrostatic power generator were reviewed for mineral mapping applications and electrostatic power generation and dust mitigation from electrostatically charged regolith.

Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNT) uniformly dispersed in stretchable materials, such as poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), could create the next generation of composites with augmented mechanical, thermal, and piezoelectric characteristics. This work reports tunable piezoelectricity of multifunctional BNNT/PDMS stretchable composites prepared via co-solvent blending with tetrahydrofuran (THF) to disperse BNNTs in PDMS while avoiding sonication or functionalization. The resultant stretchable BNNT/PDMS composites demonstrate augmented Young’s modulus (200% increase at 9 wt% BNNT) and thermal conductivity (120% increase at 9 wt% BNNT) without losing stretchability. Further-more, BNNT/PDMS composites demonstrate piezoelectric responses that are linearly proportional to BNNT wt%, achieving a piezoelectric constant (|d33|) of 18 pmV−1 at 9 wt% BNNT without poling, which is competitive with commercial piezoelectric polymers. Uniquely, BNNT/PDMS accommodates tensile strains up to 60% without plastic deformation by aligning BNNTs, which enhances the composites’ piezoelectric response approximately five times. Finally, the combined stretchable and piezoelectric nature of the composite was exploited to produce a vibration sensor sensitive to low-frequency (≈1 kHz) excitation. This is the first demonstration of multifunctional, stretchable BNNT/PDMS composites with enhanced mechanical strength and thermal conductivity and furthermore tunable piezoelectric response by varying BNNT wt% and applied strain, permitting applications in soft actuators and vibration sensors.

We report for the first time the synthesis of boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) reinforced ceramic composites using the polymer derived ceramic (PDC) processing route. The nanocomposites had a BNNT loading of up to 35.4 vol.%. TGA results showed that the nanocomposites have good thermal stability up to 900 oC in air. BNNTs in the nanocomposites survived in an oxidizing environment up to 900 oC, revealing that the nanocomposites can be used for high temperature applications. Thermal conductivity of PDC reinforced with 35.4 vol.% BNNT was measured as 4.123 W/(m·K) at room temperature, which is a 2100 % increase compared to that of pristine PDC. The thermal conductivity value increases with the increase of BNNT content. A thermal conductivity percolation phenomenon appeared when the BNNT content increased to 36±5 vol.%. The results of this study showed that BNNTs could effectively improve the thermal conductivity of PDC materials. BNNT reinforced PDC could be used as thermal structural materials in a harsh environment at the temperature up to 900 deg C.

Interfacial load transfer plays a critical role in the bulk mechanical performance of nanofiber-reinforced metallic-matrix nanocomposites (MMNC). In this paper, we investigate the mechanical strength of interfaces in double-walled carbon nanotube (CNT)-reinforced aluminum (Al) nanocomposites by using in situ electron microscopy nanomechanical single-tube pull-out techniques. The nanomechanical measurements reveal the shear lag effect on the CNT-Al interface that is found to possess an average interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of about 28.7 MPa. The study also shows that thermal annealing results in substantially higher binding strength interfaces between CNTs and Al matrices. The average IFSS of CNT-Al interfaces that were thermally annealed at 400 °C is found to reach about 35.3 MPa, a 23% increase from that of the non-annealed interfaces. The maximum load bearing capacity of the annealed interfaces reaches about 304 nN, a 40.1% increase from that of the non-annealed ones (about 217 nN). The findings are useful to better understand the load transfer mechanism in CNT-reinforced MMNC and the tuning and optimization of the reinforcing performance through thermal processing.
