Search

Transition Edge Sensors (TES) are superconducting microcalorimeters that can be used for single-photon detection with extremely low backgrounds. When they are within their superconducting transition region, small temperature fluctuations - like the energy deposited by single photons - lead to large resistance variations. These variations can be measured using Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs). This technology is planned to be used as a single-photon detector for later runs of the ALPS II experiment, a light-shining-through-walls experiment at DESY Hamburg, searching for Axion-Like Particles (ALPs), which are possible Dark Matter (DM) candidates. Due to the very low dark count rates in our setup, our TES system might be viable for direct DM searches at sub-MeV masses through electron-scattering of DM in the superconducting chip, as well. Simulations concerning background rejection and calibration methods demonstrate the needed sub-eV sensitivity already.

Superconducting detectors are a promising technology for probing dark matter at extremely low masses, where dark matter interactions are currently unconstrained. Realizing the potential of such detectors requires new readout technologies to achieve the lowest possible thresholds for deposited energy. Here we perform a prototype search for dark matter--electron interactions with kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs), a class of superconducting detector originally designed for infrared astronomy applications. We demonstrate that existing KIDs can achieve effective thresholds as low as 0.2 eV, and we use existing data to set new dark matter constraints. The relative maturity of the technology underlying KIDs means that this platform can be scaled significantly with existing tools, enabling powerful new searches in the coming years., Comment: 6+6 pages, 4+3 figures

Low-energy Compton scattering is an important background for sub-GeV dark matter direct-detection and other experiments. Current Compton scattering calculations typically rely on assumptions that are not valid in the low-energy region of interest, beneath ~ 50 eV. Here we relate the low-energy Compton scattering differential cross section to the dielectric response of the material. Our new approach can be used for a wide range of materials and includes all-electron, band structure, and collective effects, which can be particularly relevant at low energies. We demonstrate the strength of our approach in several solid-state systems, in particular Si, Ge, GaAs, and SiC, which are relevant for current and proposed experiments searching for dark matter, neutrinos, and millicharged particles., Comment: 5 figures, 9 pages + references

Axion-like-particles are a well-motivated extension of the Standard Model that can mediate interactions between the dark matter and ordinary matter. Here we consider an axion portal between the two sectors, where the axion couples to dark matter and to QCD gluons. We establish the relevant processes of interest across the scales of dark matter and axion masses and couplings, identify the distinct mechanisms that control the dark matter relic abundance in each case, and extract the resulting experimental signatures of the gluonic axion portal to dark matter., Comment: 16 pages, two columns, 5 figures

Direct detection for sub-GeV dark matter is developing rapidly, with many novel experimental ideas and theoretical methods emerging. In this work, we extend the dielectric formalism for dark matter scattering to incorporate anisotropic material responses, enabling directionally-sensitive experiments with a broad class of target materials. Using a simple model of an anisotropic electron gas, we demonstrate the importance of many-body effects such as the plasmon, and show that even when the dark matter kinetic energies are much smaller than the plasmon energy, the tail of an anisotropic plasmon can still produce a sizeable daily modulation. We highlight the relevant experimental techniques required to establish the target response, as well as the challenges in extracting a response function which is truly free of modeling uncertainties., Comment: v1: 20 pages, 9 figures

Ultralight axion-like particles are well-motivated relics that might compose the cosmological dark matter and source anomalous time-dependent magnetic fields. We report on new terrestrial bounds on the coupling of axion-like particles to neutrons and protons using the nuclei of noble-gas and alkali-metal atoms in a comagnetometer detector operating in the Spin-Exchange Relaxation-Free~(SERF) regime. Conducting a month-long search, we cover the mass range of $1.4\times 10^{-12}$ eV/$c^2$ to $2\times 10^{-10}$~eV/$c^2$ and provide world-leading limits which supersede robust astrophysical bounds and improve upon previous terrestrial constraints by up to two orders of magnitudes for many masses within this range. These are the first reliable terrestrial bounds reported on the coupling of protons with axion-like dark matter, covering a new and unexplored terrain in its parameter space.

We introduce Super-Resonant Dark Matter, a model of self-interacting dark matter based on the low energy effective theory of supersymmetric QCD. The structure of the theory ensures a resonant enhancement of the self-interactions of the low energy mesons, since their mass ratio is set by the number of colors and flavors. The velocity dependence of the resonantly enhanced self-interactions allows such theories to accommodate puzzles in small scale structure that arise from dark matter halos of different sizes. The dark matter mass is then predicted to be around 3-4 MeV, with its abundance set by freeze-in via a kinetically mixed dark photon.

Theoretical investigations into the evolution of the early universe are an essential part of particle physics that allow us to identify viable extensions to the Standard Model as well as motivated parameter space that can be probed by various experiments and observations. In this white paper, we review particle physics models of the early universe. First, we outline various models that explain two essential ingredients of the early universe (dark matter and baryon asymmetry) and those that seek to address current observational anomalies. We then discuss dynamics of the early universe in models of neutrino masses, axions, and several solutions to the electroweak hierarchy problem. Finally, we review solutions to naturalness problems of the Standard Model that employ cosmological dynamics., Comment: contribution to Snowmass 2021

High-energy photons with $\mathcal{O}$(MeV) energies from radioactive contaminants can scatter in a solid-state target material and constitute an important low-energy background for sub-GeV dark matter direct-detection searches. This background is most noticeable for energy deposits in the $1 - 100$ meV range due to the partially coherent scattering enhancement in the forward scattering direction. We comprehensively quantify the resulting single- and multi-phonon background in Si, Ge, GaAs, SiC, and Al$_2$O$_3$ target materials, which are representative of target materials of interest in low-mass dark matter searches. We use a realistic representation of the high-energy photon background, and contrast the expected background phonon spectrum with the expected dark matter signal phonon spectrum. An active veto is needed to suppress this background sufficiently in order to allow for the detection of a dark matter signal, even in well-shielded environments. For comparison we also show the expected single- and multi-phonon event rates from coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering due to solar neutrinos, and find that they are sub-dominant to the photon-induced phonon background., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 1 table; v2: Added Appendix D with derivation of solar neutrino background. We propose a new thermal dark matter candidate whose abundance is determined by the freezeout of inverse decays. The relic abundance depends parametrically only on a decay width, while matching the observed value requires that the coupling determining the width-and the width itself-should be exponentially small. The dark matter is therefore very weakly coupled to the Standard Model, evading conventional searches. This INverse DecaY ('INDY') dark matter can be discovered by searching for the long-lived particle that decays into the dark matter at future planned experiments., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Superconducting nanowires, a mature technology originally developed for quantum sensing, can be used as a target and sensor with which to search for dark matter interactions with electrons. Here we report on a 180-hour measurement of a tungsten silicide superconducting nanowire device with a mass of 4.3 nanograms. We use this to place new constraints on dark matter--electron interactions, including the strongest terrestrial constraints to date on sub-MeV (sub-eV) dark matter that interacts with electrons via scattering (absorption) processes., Comment: 5 pages + appendices, 5 figures. Direct detection experiments are gaining in mass reach. Here we show that the inclusion of dark Compton scattering, which has typically been neglected in absorption searches, has a substantial impact on the reach and discovery potential of direct detection experiments at high bosonic cold dark matter masses. We demonstrate this for relic dark photons and axion-like particles: we improve expected reach across materials, and further use results from SuperCDMS, EDELWEISS and GERDA to place enhanced limits on dark matter parameter space. Superconducting detectors have been proposed as outstanding targets for the direct detection of light dark matter scattering at masses as low as a keV. We study the prospects for directional detection of dark matter in isotropic superconducting targets from the angular distribution of excitations produced in the material. We find that dark matter scattering produces initial excitations with an anisotropic distribution, and further show that this directional information can be preserved as the initial excitations relax. Our results demonstrate that directional detection is possible for a wide range of dark matter masses, and pave the way for light dark matter discovery with bulk superconducting targets., Comment: 5 pages + references, 2 figures. We show that the rate for dark matter-electron scattering in an arbitrary material is determined by an experimentally measurable quantity, the complex dielectric function, for any dark matter interaction that couples to electron density. This formulation automatically includes many-body effects, eliminates all systematic theoretical uncertainties on the electronic wavefunctions, and allows a direct calibration of the spectrum by electromagnetic probes such as infrared spectroscopy, X-ray scattering, and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). Our formalism applies for several common benchmark models, including spin-independent interactions through scalar and vector mediators of arbitrary mass. We discuss the consequences for standard semiconductor and superconductor targets, and find that the true reach of superconductor detectors for light mediators exceeds previous estimates by several orders of magnitude, with further enhancements possible due to the low-energy tail of the plasmon. Using a heavy-fermion superconductor as an example, we show how our formulation allows a rapid and systematic investigation of novel electron scattering targets., Comment: 5 pages + references, 2 figures. We propose the use of silicon carbide (SiC) for direct detection of sub-GeV dark matter. SiC has properties similar to both silicon and diamond, but has two key advantages: (i) it is a polar semiconductor which allows sensitivity to a broader range of dark matter candidates; and (ii) it exists in many stable polymorphs with varying physical properties, and hence has tunable sensitivity to various dark matter models. We show that SiC is an excellent target to search for electron, nuclear and phonon excitations from scattering of dark matter down to 10 keV in mass, as well as for absorption processes of dark matter down to 10 meV in mass. Combined with its widespread use as an alternative to silicon in other detector technologies and its availability compared to diamond, our results demonstrate that SiC holds much promise as a novel dark matter detector., Comment: 28 pages, 11 figures

The noble-alkali comagnetometer, developed in recent years, has been shown to be a very accurate measuring device of anomalous magnetic-like fields. An ultra-light relic axion-like particle can source an anomalous field that permeates space, allowing for its detection by comagnetometers. Here we derive new constraints on relic axion-like particles interaction with neutrons and electrons from old comagnetometer data. We show that the decade-old experimental data place the most stringent terrestrial constraints to date on ultra-light axion-like particles coupled to neutrons. The constraints are comparable to those from stellar cooling, providing a complementary probe. Future planned improvements of comagnetometer measurements through altered geometry, constituent content and data analysis techniques could enhance the sensitivity to axion-like relics coupled to nucleons or electrons by many orders of magnitude., Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

We propose the use of superconducting nanowires as both target and sensor for direct detection of sub-GeV dark matter. With excellent sensitivity to small energy deposits on electrons, and demonstrated low dark counts, such devices could be used to probe electron recoils from dark matter scattering and absorption processes. We demonstrate the feasibility of this idea using measurements of an existing fabricated tungsten-silicide nanowire prototype with 0.8 eV energy threshold and 4.3 nanograms with 10 thousand seconds of exposure, which showed no dark counts. The results from this device already place meaningful bounds on dark matter-electron interactions, including the strongest terrestrial bounds on sub-eV dark photon absorption to date. Future expected fabrication on larger scales and with lower thresholds should enable probing new territory in the direct detection landscape, establishing the complementarity of this approach to other existing proposals., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We propose to use high-purity lab-grown diamond for the detection of sub-GeV dark matter. Diamond targets can be sensitive to both nuclear and electron recoils from dark matter scattering in the MeV and above mass range, as well as to absorption processes of dark matter with masses between sub-eV to 10's of eV. Compared to other proposed semiconducting targets such as germanium and silicon, diamond detectors can probe lower dark matter masses via nuclear recoils due to the lightness of the carbon nucleus. The expected reach for electron recoils is comparable to that of germanium and silicon, with the advantage that dark counts are expected to be under better control. Via absorption processes, unconstrained QCD axion parameter space can be successfully probed in diamond for masses of order 10 eV, further demonstrating the power of our approach., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, submitted to PRD

If supersymmetry exists at any scale, regardless of whether it is restored around the weak scale, it may be a good symmetry of the dark sector, enforcing a degeneracy between its lowest lying fermions and bosons. We explore the implications of this scenario for the early universe and dark matter, as well as the corresponding signatures. In particular we show that the thermal history of the dark sector results in co-decaying dark matter in much of the parameter space. We present a new solution to the hierarchy problem, where the Higgs mass is at its observed electroweak value because such a patch inflates the most in the early universe. If the Higgs mass depends on a field undergoing quantum fluctuations during inflation, then inflation will fill the universe with the Higgs mass that corresponds to the largest vacuum energy. The hierarchy problem is solved if the maximum vacuum energy occurs for the observed Higgs mass. We demonstrate this notion with a proof-of-principle model containing an axion, a modulus field and the Higgs, and show that inflation can be responsible for the weak scale., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Dark matter could be a thermal relic comprised of strongly interacting massive particles (SIMPs), where $3 \rightarrow 2$ interactions set the relic abundance. Such interactions generically arise in theories of chiral symmetry breaking via the Wess-Zumino-Witten term. In this work, we show that an axion-like particle can successfully maintain kinetic equilibrium between the dark matter and the visible sector, allowing the requisite entropy transfer that is crucial for SIMPs to be a cold dark matter candidate. Constraints on this scenario arise from beam dump and collider experiments, from the cosmic microwave background, and from supernovae. We find a viable parameter space when the axion-like particle is close in mass to the SIMP dark matter, with strong-scale masses of order a few hundred MeV. We examine the theoretical motivations for long-lived particle (LLP) signals at the LHC in a comprehensive survey of Standard Model (SM) extensions. LLPs are a common prediction of a wide range of theories that address unsolved fundamental mysteries such as naturalness, dark matter, baryogenesis and neutrino masses, and represent a natural and generic possibility for physics beyond the SM (BSM). In most cases the LLP lifetime can be treated as a free parameter from the $\mu$m scale up to the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis limit of $\sim 10^7$m. Neutral LLPs with lifetimes above $\sim$ 100m are particularly difficult to probe, as the sensitivity of the LHC main detectors is limited by challenging backgrounds, triggers, and small acceptances. MATHUSLA is a proposal for a minimally instrumented, large-volume surface detector near ATLAS or CMS. It would search for neutral LLPs produced in HL-LHC collisions by reconstructing displaced vertices (DVs) in a low-background environment, extending the sensitivity of the main detectors by orders of magnitude in the long-lifetime regime. In this white paper we study the LLP physics opportunities afforded by a MATHUSLA-like detector at the HL-LHC. We develop a model-independent approach to describe the sensitivity of MATHUSLA to BSM LLP signals, and compare it to DV and missing energy searches at ATLAS or CMS. We then explore the BSM motivations for LLPs in considerable detail, presenting a large number of new sensitivity studies. While our discussion is especially oriented towards the long-lifetime regime at MATHUSLA, this survey underlines the importance of a varied LLP search program at the LHC in general. By synthesizing these results into a general discussion of the top-down and bottom-up motivations for LLP searches, it is our aim to demonstrate the exceptional strength and breadth of the physics case for the construction of the MATHUSLA detector., Comment: 213 pages, 73 figures. The hierarchy problem and the identity of dark matter are two of the central driving forces in particle physics. Twin Higgs models provide an elegant solution to the little hierarchy problem, while Strongly Interacting Massive Particles (SIMPs) provide an appealing dark matter candidate. Here we show that SIMPs can easily be embedded in the Twin Higgs setup, such that dark matter and the hierarchy problem can be addressed in a single framework. This also provides a natural explanation to the proximity between the confinement scale of SIMP dark matter and the strong scale of QCD., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We propose the use of three-dimensional Dirac materials as targets for direct detection of sub-MeV dark matter. Dirac materials are characterized by a linear dispersion for low-energy electronic excitations, with a small band gap of O(meV) if lattice symmetries are broken. Dark matter at the keV scale carrying kinetic energy as small as a few meV can scatter and excite an electron across the gap. Alternatively, bosonic dark matter as light as a few meV can be absorbed by the electrons in the target. We develop the formalism for dark matter scattering and absorption in Dirac materials and calculate the experimental reach of these target materials. We find that Dirac materials can play a crucial role in detecting dark matter in the keV to MeV mass range that scatters with electrons via a kinetically mixed dark photon, as the dark photon does not develop an in-medium effective mass. The same target materials provide excellent sensitivity to absorption of light bosonic dark matter in the meV to hundreds of meV mass range, superior to all other existing proposals when the dark matter is a kinetically mixed dark photon., Comment: 24+25 pages, 4 appendices, 12 figures, 1 table. v2: references added

Strongly Interacting Massive Particles (SIMPs) have recently been proposed as light thermal dark matter relics. Here we consider an explicit realization of the SIMP mechanism in the form of vector SIMPs arising from an $SU(2)_X$ hidden gauge theory, where the accidental custodial symmetry protects the stability of the dark matter. We propose several ways of equilibrating the dark and visible sectors in this setup. Rich and complex dark sectors are abundant in particle physics theories. Here we propose performing spectroscopy of the mass structure of dark sectors via mono-photon searches at lepton colliders. The energy of the mono-photon tracks the invariant mass of the invisible system it recoils against, which enables studying the resonance structure of the dark sector. We demonstrate this idea with several well-motivated models of dark sectors. Semiconductors are by now well-established targets for direct detection of MeV to GeV dark matter via scattering off electrons. We show that semiconductor targets can also detect significantly lighter dark matter via an absorption process. When the dark matter mass is above the band gap of the semiconductor (around an eV), absorption proceeds by excitation of an electron into the conduction band. Below the band gap, multi-phonon excitations enable absorption of dark matter in the 0.01 eV to eV mass range. Energetic dark matter particles emitted from the sun can also be probed for masses below an eV. We derive the reach for absorption of a relic kinetically mixed dark photon or pseudoscalar in germanium and silicon, and show that existing direct detection results already probe new parameter space. With only a moderate exposure, low-threshold semiconductor target experiments can exceed current astrophysical and terrestrial constraints on sub-keV bosonic dark matter., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures; journal version

We propose two-dimensional materials as targets for direct detection of dark matter. Using graphene as an example, we focus on the case where dark matter scattering deposits sufficient energy on a valence-band electron to eject it from the target. We show that the sensitivity of graphene to dark matter of MeV to GeV mass can be comparable, for similar exposure and background levels, to that of semiconductor targets such as silicon and germanium. Moreover, a two-dimensional target is an excellent directional detector, as the ejected electron retains information about the angular dependence of the incident dark matter particle. Superconducting targets have recently been proposed for the direct detection of dark matter as light as a keV, via elastic scattering off conduction electrons in Cooper pairs. Detecting such light dark matter requires sensitivity to energies as small as the superconducting gap of O(meV). Here we show that these same superconducting devices can detect much lighter DM, of meV to eV mass, via dark matter absorption on a conduction electron, followed by emission of an athermal phonon. We demonstrate the power of this setup for relic kinetically mixed hidden photons, pseudoscalars, and scalars, showing the reach can exceed current astrophysical and terrestrial constraints with only a moderate exposure., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

We study the interactions between strongly interacting massive particle dark matter and the Standard Model via a massive vector boson that is kinetically mixed with the hypercharge gauge boson. The relic abundance is set by 3-to-2 self-interactions of the dark matter, while the interactions with the vector mediator enable kinetic equilibrium between the dark and visible sectors. We show that a wide range of parameters is phenomenologically viable and can be probed in various ways. Astrophysical and cosmological constraints are evaded due to the p-wave nature of dark matter annihilation into visible particles, while direct detection methods using electron recoils can be sensitive to parts of the parameter space. In addition, we propose performing spectroscopy of the strongly coupled dark sector at e+e- colliders, where the energy of a mono-photon can track the resonance structure of the dark sector. We examine in greater detail the recent proposal of using superconductors for detecting dark matter as light as the warm dark matter limit of O(keV). Detection of such light dark matter is possible if the entire kinetic energy of the dark matter is extracted in the scattering, and if the experiment is sensitive to O(meV) energy depositions. This is the case for Fermi-degenerate materials in which the Fermi velocity exceeds the dark matter velocity dispersion in the Milky Way of ~10^-3. We focus on a concrete experimental proposal using a superconducting target with a transition edge sensor in order to detect the small energy deposits from the dark matter scatterings. Considering a wide variety of constraints, from dark matter self-interactions to the cosmic microwave background, we show that models consistent with cosmological/astrophysical and terrestrial constraints are observable with such detectors. A wider range of viable models with dark matter mass below an MeV is available if dark matter or mediator properties (such as couplings or masses) differ at BBN epoch or in stellar interiors from those in superconductors. We propose and study a new class of superconducting detectors which are sensitive to O(meV) electron recoils from dark matter-electron scattering. Such devices could detect dark matter as light as the warm dark matter limit, mX > keV. We compute the rate of dark matter scattering off of free electrons in a (superconducting) metal, including the relevant Pauli blocking factors. It has recently been proposed that dark matter could be a thermal relic of 3-to-2 scatterings in a strongly coupled hidden sector. We present explicit classes of strongly coupled gauge theories that admit this behavior. These are QCD-like theories of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking, where the pions play the role of dark matter. The number-changing 3-to-2 process, which sets the dark matter relic abundance, arises from the Wess-Zumino-Witten term. The theories give an explicit relationship between the 3-to-2 annihilation rate and the 2-to-2 self-scattering rate, which alters predictions for structure formation. We present a simple model of weak-scale thermal dark matter that gives rise to X-ray lines. Dark matter consists of two nearly degenerate states near the weak scale, which are populated thermally in the early universe via co-annihilation with slightly heavier states that are charged under the Standard Model. The X-ray line arises from the decay of the heavier dark matter component into the lighter one via a radiative dipole transition, at a rate that is slow compared to the age of the universe. The model predicts observable signatures at the LHC in the form of exotic events with missing energy and displaced leptons and jets. We present a new paradigm for achieving thermal relic dark matter. The mechanism arises when a nearly secluded dark sector is thermalized with the Standard Model after reheating. The freezeout process is a number-changing 3->2 annihilation of strongly-interacting-massive-particles (SIMPs) in the dark sector, and points to sub-GeV dark matter. The couplings to the visible sector, necessary for maintaining thermal equilibrium with the Standard Model, imply measurable signals that will allow coverage of a significant part of the parameter space with future indirect- and direct-detection experiments and via direct production of dark matter at colliders. We clarify several subtleties concerning the implementation of minimal flavor violation (MFV) in two Higgs doublet models. We derive all the exact and approximate predictions of MFV for the neutral scalar (h,H,A) Yukawa couplings to fermions. A new boson with mass ~125 GeV and properties similar to the Standard Model Higgs has been discovered by both the ATLAS and CMS collaborations, with significant observation in the ZZ* to 4 leptons and the diphoton channels. In this work we ask whether the signals in these two channels can be due primarily to two distinct resonances, each contributing dominantly to one channel. We investigate this question in the framework of a 2HDM and several of its extensions. We conservatively find that such a scenario is not possible in a pure 2HDM, nor under the addition of vector-like quarks, but is allowed when adding one or two top-like scalars, if one allows for sub-one tan\beta. The resonances in the diboson and diphoton channels can then be two scalars, or a scalar and a pseudoscalar, respectively. In each viable case, we further find the expected future deviations in the diboson, diphoton, b \bar b and tau tau rates, which will be useful in excluding the two-resonance scenario., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure

Measurements of the Yukawa couplings of the recently discovered boson h to fermion pairs will provide a new arena for studying flavor physics. We analyze the lessons that can be learned by measuring the h decay rates into the charged lepton pairs, \tau\tau, \mu\mu, and \tau\mu. We derive generic predictions at hadron colliders from the large forward-backward asymmetry observed at the Tevatron, assuming the latter arises from heavy new physics beyond the Standard Model. We use an effective field theory approach to characterize the associated unknown dynamics. By fitting the Tevatron t \bar t data we derive constraints on the form of the new physics. Furthermore, we show that heavy new physics explaining the Tevatron data generically enhances at high invariant masses both the top pair production cross section and the charge asymmetry at the LHC. This enhancement can be within the sensitivity of the 8 TeV run, such that the 2012 LHC data should be able to exclude a large class of models of heavy new physics or provide hints for its presence. There is experimental evidence for a direct CP asymmetry in singly Cabibbo suppressed D decays, \Delta A_{CP} \sim 0.006. Naive expectations are that the Standard Model contribution to \Delta A_{CP} is an order of magnitude smaller. We explore the possibility that a major part of the symmetry comes from supersymmetric contributions. The leading candidates are models where the flavor structure of the trilinear scalar couplings is related to the structure of the Yukawa couplings via approximate flavor symmetries, particularly U(1), [U(1)]^2 and U(2). The recent hints for a lightest neutral Higgs boson with mass around 125 GeV support the requisite order one trilinear terms. The typical value of the supersymmetric contribution to the asymmetry is \Delta A_{CP}^{SUSY}\sim 0.001, but it could be accidentally enhanced by order one coefficients., Comment: 6 pages. v2: References added

The CDF and LHCb experiments have recently provided two intriguing hints for new physics: a large forward-backward asymmetry in $t\bar t$ production, and a direct CP asymmetry in D decays of order a percent. In both cases, flavor non-universal interactions are required in the up sector, raising the possibility that the two effects come from one and the same new physics source. A large forward-backward asymmetry in $t\bar t$ production, for large invariant mass of the $t\bar t$ system, has been recently observed by the CDF collaboration. Among the scalar mediated mechanisms that can explain such a large asymmetry, only the t-channel exchange of a color-singlet weak-doublet scalar is consistent with both differential and integrated $t\bar t$ cross section measurements. Constraints from flavor changing processes dictate a very specific structure for the Yukawa couplings of such a new scalar. The CDF collaboration has recently reported a large deviation from the standard model of the t \bar t forward-backward asymmetry in the high invariant mass region. We interpret this measurement as coming from new physics at a heavy scale Lambda, and perform a model-independent analysis up to O(1/Lambda^4). A simple formalism to test and constrain models of new physics is provided. We find that a large asymmetry cannot be accommodated by heavy new physics that does not interfere with the standard model. We show that a smoking gun test for the heavy new physics hypothesis is a significant deviation from the standard model prediction for the t \bar t differential cross section at large invariant mass. New physics at a high scale Lambda can affect top-related observables at O(1/Lambda^2) via the interference of effective four quark operators with the SM amplitude. The (\bar{u} gamma_mu gamma^5 T^a u)(\bar{t} gamma^mu gamma^5 T^a t) operator modifies the large M_{t\bar{t}} forward-backward asymmetry, and can account for the recent CDF measurement. The (\bar{u} gamma_mu T^a u)(\bar{t} gamma^mu T^a t) operator modifies the differential cross section, but cannot enhance the cross section of ultra-massive boosted jets by more than 60%. The hint for a larger enhancement from a recent CDF measurement may not persist future experimental improvements, or may be a QCD effect that is not accounted for by leading order and matched Monte Carlo tools or naive factorization. The D0 collaboration has recently announced evidence for a dimuon CP asymmetry in B_{d,s} decays of order one percent. If confirmed, this asymmetry requires new physics. We argue that for minimally flavor violating (MFV) new physics, and at low tan beta=v_u/v_d, there are only two four-quark operators (Q_{2,3}) that can provide the required CP violating effect. The scale of such new physics must lie below 260 GeV sqrt{tan beta}. The effect is universal in the B_s and B_d systems, leading to S_{psi K}~sin(2beta)-0.15 and S_{psi phi}~0.25. The effects on epsilon_K and on electric dipole moments are negligible. The most plausible mechanism is tree-level scalar exchange. MFV supersymmetry with low tan beta will be excluded. Finally, we explain how a pattern of deviations from the Standard Model predictions for S_{psi phi}, S_{psi K} and epsilon_K can be used to test MFV and, if MFV holds, to probe its structure in detail., Comment: 11 pages. v2: References added

Future high-precision flavor experiments may discover a pattern of deviations from the standard model predictions for flavor-changing neutral current processes. One of the interesting questions that can be answered then will be whether the flavor structure of the new physics is related to that of the standard model or not. We analyze this aspect of flavor physics within a specific framework: supersymmetric models where the soft breaking terms are dominated by gauge-mediation but get non-negligible contributions from gravity-mediation. We compare the possible patterns of non-minimally flavor-violating effects that arise if the gravity-mediated contributions are anarchical vs. the case that they are structured by a Froggatt-Nielsen symmetry. A possible resolution of the flavor puzzle is that the fermion mass hierarchy can be dynamically generated through the coupling of the first two generation fields to a strongly coupled sector, which is approximately conformally invariant and leads to large anomalous dimensions for the first two generation fields over a large range of energies. We investigate the possibility of using the same sector to also break supersymmetry. We show that this automatically gives an "inverted hierarchy" in which the first two generation squarks and sleptons are much heavier than the other superpartners. Implementing this construction generically requires some fine-tuning in order to satisfy the constraints on flavor-changing neutral currents at the same time as solving the hierarchy problem. We study the stability of the Higgs potential in the framework of the effective Lagrangian beyond the MSSM. While the leading nonrenormalizable operators can shift the Higgs boson mass above the experimental bound, they also tend to render the scalar potential unbounded from below. The destabilization is correlated with the Higgs mass increase, so that if quantum corrections are small the problem is severe. We show that a supersymmetric sub-leading correction stabilizes the potential within the domain of validity of the effective theory. Constraints on MSSM parameters as well as on higher dimensional operators are derived, ensuring that our vacuum has a lifetime longer than the present age of the universe. In addition we show that when effective operators are responsible for evading the LEP bound, stability constraints imply an upper bound on the scale of new physics in the few TeV range., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures
