Search

Quantum vortices are fundamentally important for properties of superconductors. In conventional type-II superconductor they determine the magnetic response of the system and tend to form regular lattices. UTe$_2$ is a recently discovered heavy fermion superconductor exhibiting many anomalous macroscopic behaviors. However, the question whether it has a multicomponent order parameter remains open. Here, we study magnetic properties of UTe$_2$ by employing scanning superconducting quantum interference device microscopy. We find vortex behavior which is very different from that in ordinary superconductors. We imaged vortices generated by cooling in magnetic field applied along different crystalline directions. While a small out-of-plane magnetic field produces typical isolated vortices, higher field generates vortex stripe patterns which evolve with vortex density. The stripes form at different locations and along different directions in the surface plane when the vortices are crystalized along the crystalline b or c axes. The behavior is reproduced by our simulation based on an anisotropic two-component order parameter. This study shows that UTe$_2$ has a nontrivial disparity of multiple length scales, placing constraints on multicomponent superconductivity. The tendency of vortex stripe formation and their control by external field may be useful in fluxonics applications.

Since their theoretical discovery more than a half-century ago, vortices observed in bulk superconductors have carried a quantized value of magnetic flux determined only by fundamental constants. A recent experiment reported 'unquantized' quantum vortices carrying the same fraction of flux quantum in Ba$_{0.23}$K$_{0.77}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ in a small temperature range below its superconducting critical temperature ($T_C$). Here, we use scanning superconducting quantum interference device (sSQUID) microscopy with improved sensitivity to investigate the genesis of fractional vortices in Ba$_{0.23}$K$_{0.77}$Fe$_2$As$_2$. We report the direct observation of a single-flux quantum vortex splitting into two different fractions with increasing temperature. The flux of the two fractions has opposite dependence on temperature, while the total flux sums up to one flux quantum despite their spatial separation. Overall, our study shows the existence of different fractional vortices and their stability in temperature ranging from 0.1 to 0.99 $T_C$. Besides the implications of this observation for the fundamental question of quantum vorticity, the discovery of these objects paves the way for the new platform for anyon quasiparticles and applications for fractional fluxonics.

We propose a novel and experimentally feasible approach to achieve high-efficiency ground-state cooling of a mechanical oscillator in an optomechanical system under the deeply unresolved sideband condition with the assistance of both intracavity and extracavity squeezing. In the scheme, a degenerate optical parametric amplifier is placed inside the optical cavity, generating the intracavity squeezing; besides, the optical cavity is driven by externally generated squeezing light, namely the extracavity squeezing. The quantum interference effect generated by intracavity squeezing and extracavity squeezing can completely suppress the non-resonant Stokes heating process while greatly enhancing the anti-Stokes cooling process. Therefore, the joint-squeezing scheme is capable of cooling the mechanical oscillators to their quantum ground state in a regime far away from the resolved sideband condition. Compared with other traditional optomechanical cooling schemes, the single-photon cooling rate in this joint-squeezing scheme can be tremendously enlarged by nearly three orders of magnitude. At the same time, the coupling strength required to achieve ground-state cooling can be significantly reduced. This scheme is promising for cooling large-mass and low-frequency mechanical oscillators, which provides a prerequisite for preparing and manipulating non-classical states in macroscopic quantum systems and lays a significant foundation for quantum manipulation., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Conventional superconductors naturally disfavor ferromagnetism because the supercurrent-carrying electrons are paired into anti-parallel spin singlets. In superconductors with strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling, impurity magnetic moments induce supercurrents through the spin-galvanic effect. As a result, long-range ferromagnetic interaction among the impurity moments may be mediated through such anomalous supercurrents in a similar fashion as in itinerant ferromagnets. Fe(Se,Te) is such a superconductor with topological surface bands, previously shown to exhibit quantum anomalous vortices around impurity spins. Here, we take advantage of the flux sensitivity of scanning superconducting quantum interference devices to investigate superconducting Fe(Se,Te) in the regime where supercurrents around impurities overlap. We find homogeneous remanent flux patterns after applying a supercurrent through the sample. The patterns are consistent with anomalous edge and bulk supercurrents generated by in-plane magnetization, which occur above a current threshold and follow hysteresis loops reminiscent of those of a ferromagnet. Similar long-range magnetic orders can be generated by Meissner current under a small out-of-plane magnetic field. The magnetization weakens with increasing temperature and disappears after thermal cycling to above superconducting critical temperature; further suggesting superconductivity is central to establishing and maintaining the magnetic order. These observations demonstrate surface anomalous supercurrents as a mediator for ferromagnetism in a spin-orbit coupled superconductor, which may potentially be utilized for low-power cryogenic memory.

LiV$_2$O$_4$ is a mixed-valent spinel oxide and one of a few transition-metal compounds to host a heavy fermion phase at low temperatures. While numerous experimental studies have attempted to elucidate how its 3$d$ electrons undergo giant mass renormalization, spectroscopic probes that may provide crucial hints, such as scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), remain to be applied. A prerequisite is atomically flat and pristine surfaces, which, in the case of LiV$_2$O$_4$, are difficult to obtain by cleavage of small, three-dimensional crystals. We report the epitaxial growth of LiV$_2$O$_4$ thin films with bulklike properties on SrTiO$_3$(111) via pulsed laser deposition and stable STM imaging of the LiV$_2$O$_4$(111) surface. The as-grown films were transferred $ex$ $situ$ to a room-temperature STM, where subsequent annealing with optional sputtering in ultrahigh vacuum enabled compact islands with smooth surfaces and a hexagonal 1$\times$1 atomic lattice to be resolved. Our STM measurements provide insights into growth mechanisms of LiV$_2$O$_4$ on SrTiO$_3$(111), as well as demonstrate the feasibility of performing surface-sensitive measurements of this heavy fermion compound., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures + SM

In two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnets, anisotropy is essential for the magnetic ordering as dictated by the Mermin-Wagner theorem. But when competing anisotropies are present, the phase transition becomes nontrivial. Here, utilizing highly sensitive susceptometry of scanning superconducting quantum interference device microscopy, we probe the spin correlations of ABC-stacked CrBr3 under zero magnetic field. We identify a plateau feature in susceptibility above the critical temperature (Tc) in thick samples. It signifies a crossover regime induced by the competition between easy-plane intralayer exchange anisotropy versus uniaxial interlayer anisotropy. The evolution of the critical behavior from the bulk to 2D shows that the competition between the anisotropies is magnified in the reduced dimension. It leads to a strongly frustrated ferromagnetic transition in the bilayer with fluctuation on the order of Tc, which is distinct from both the monolayer and the bulk. Our observation potentially offers a 2D localized spin system on honeycomb lattice to explore magnetic frustration.

We have carried out exclusive measurements for the photoproduction of an $\eta$ meson from a proton target with an egg-shaped calorimeter made of BGO crystals (BGOegg) and forward charged-particle detectors at the SPring-8 LEPS2 beamline. The differential cross sections and photon beam asymmetries of the $\gamma p \to \eta p$ reaction are measured in a center-of-mass energy ($W$) range of $1.82$-$2.32$ GeV and a polar angle range of $-1.0 < \cos{\theta^{\eta}_{\mathrm{c.m.}}} < 0.6$. The reaction is identified by selecting a proton and two $\gamma$'s produced by an $\eta$-meson decay. The kinematic fit method was employed to select the reaction candidate with the confidence level larger than $1$\%. A bump structure at $W$ = $2.0$-$2.3$ GeV in the differential cross section is confirmed at extremely backward $\eta$ polar angles, where the existing data are inconsistent with each other. This bump structure is likely associated with high-spin resonances that couple with $s\bar{s}$ quarks. The results of the photon beam asymmetries in a wide $\eta$ polar angle range are new for the photon beam energies exceeding $2.1$ GeV. These results are not reproduced by the existing partial wave analyses. They provide an additional constraint to nucleon resonance studies at high energies., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

Coherent photoproduction of the neutral pion and eta meson on the deuteron, $\gamma{d}${$\to$}$\pi^0\eta{d}$, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section demonstrates a rapid rise below 1 GeV. The data are underestimated by the existing theoretical calculations based on quasi-free $\pi^0 \eta$ photoproduction on the nucleon followed by deuteron coalescence. At the same time, the data are rather well reproduced by the calculations taking into account the final-state interaction. We have also measured for the first time the differential cross sections: the $\pi^0 \eta$ invariant-mass distribution $d\sigma/dM_{\pi \eta}$, the $\pi^0 d$ invariant-mass distribution $d\sigma/dM_{\pi d}$, the $\eta d$ invariant-mass distribution $d\sigma/dM_{\eta d}$, and the distribution over the deuteron emission angle $d\sigma/d\Omega_d$ in the overall center-of-mass frame. The measured cross section $d\sigma/d\Omega_d$ does not exhibit strongly backward-peaking behavior predicted by the calculations. At all incident energies, an increase in $d\sigma/dM_{\eta d}$ near the $\eta d$ threshold is observed, which indicates a bound or virtual $\eta d$ state resulting from a strong attraction between $\eta$ and a deuteron. The possibilities of using coherent $\pi^0\eta$ photoproduction on a nucleus to study the $\eta$-nuclear interaction are also discussed., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Purpose: As a typical chronic kidney disease (CKD), hypertensive nephrosclerosis (HN) is a common syndrome of hypertension, characterized by chronic kidney microvascular damage. Early diagnosis of microvascular damage using conventional ultrasound imaging encounters challenges in sensitivity and specificity owing to the inherent diffraction limit. Ultrasound localization microscopy (ULM) has been developed to obtain microvasculature and microvascular hemodynamics within the kidney, and would be a promising tool for early diagnosis of CKD. Methods: In this study, the advantage of ULM over conventional clinical inspection (serum and urine tests) and ultrasound imaging (Doppler and contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging) for early diagnosis of HN was investigated. Examinations were carried out on 6 spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and 5 normal Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats at the age of 10 weeks. Results: The experimental results showed that the indicators derived from conventional clinical inspection and ultrasound imaging (PSV, EDV, RI, RT, IMAX, mTT and AUC) did not show significant difference between hypertensive and healthy rats (p > 0.05), while the TTP derived from CEUS (p < 0.05) and the mean blood flow speed in artery of SHR derived from ULM is significantly higher than that of WKY rats (p < 0.01). Conclusion: The quantitative results showed that ULM has higher sensitivity than conventional clinical inspection and ultrasound imaging. ULM may promise a reliable solution for early diagnosis of HN.

We study the optical pulse response of a superconducting half-wavelength coplanar waveguide (CPW) resonator. We apply a short optical pulse to the center strip of the CPW resonator, where the current distribution shows antinodes or nodes for different resonance modes, and measure the frequency response. We develop a time-dependent variable inductance circuit model with which we can simulate the optical pulse response of the resonator. By fitting this model to experimental data, we extract the temporal kinetic inductance variations, which directly reflect the quasi-particle recombination with time and diffusion in space. We also retrieve the spatial size of the quasi-particle distribution and the quasi-particle diffusion constant. Our study is very useful for the design of photon-counting kinetic inductance detectors, and the method developed in this work provides a useful way to study the quasi-particle dynamics in the superconductor., Comment: pleae cite as: Appl. To investigate the interaction between the nucleon $N$ and nucleon resonance $N(1535)1/2^-$, the $\eta d$ threshold structure connected to the isoscalar $S$-wave $N$-$N(1535)1/2^-$ system has been experimentally studied in the $\gamma{d}${$\to$}$\pi^0\eta{d}$ reaction at incident photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. A strong enhancement is observed near the $\eta d$ threshold over the three-body phase-space contribution in the $\eta d$ invariant-mass distribution. An analysis incorporating the known isovector resonance $\mathcal{D}_{12}$ with a spin-parity of $2^+$ in the $\pi^0d$ channel reveals the existence of a narrow isoscalar resonance-like structure with $1^-$ in the $\eta d$ system. Using a Flatt\'e parametrization, the mass is found to be $2.427_{-0.006}^{+0.013}$ GeV, close to the $\eta d$ threshold, and the width is $\left(0.029_{-0.029}^{+0.006}{\rm\ GeV}\right)+\left(0.00_{-0.00}^{+0.41}\right) p_\eta c$, where $p_\eta$ denotes the $\eta$ momentum in the rest frame of the $\eta d$ system. The observed structure would be attributed to a predicted isoscalar $1^-$ $\eta NN$ bound state from $\eta NN$ and $\pi NN$ coupled-channel calculation, or an $\eta d$ virtual state owing to strong $\eta d$ attraction., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Conventional crystalline alloys usually possess a low atomic size difference in order to stabilize its crystalline structure. However, in this article, we report a single phase chemically complex alloy which possesses a large atomic size misfit usually unaffordable to conventional alloys. Consequently, this alloy develops a rather complex atomic-scale chemical order and a highly distorted crystalline structure. As a result, this crystalline alloy displays an unusually high elastic strain limit (~2%), about ten times of that of conventional alloys, and an extremely low internal friction (< 2E-4) at room temperature. More interestingly, this alloy firmly maintains its elastic modulus even when the testing temperature rises from room temperature to 900 K, which is unmatched by the existing alloys hitherto reported. From an application viewpoint, our discovery may open up new opportunities to design high precision devices usable even under an extreme environment.

Tuning many-body electronic phases by an external handle is of both fundamental and practical importance in condensed matter science. The tunability mirrors the underlying interactions, and gigantic electric, optical and magnetic responses to minute external stimuli can be anticipated in the critical region of phase change. The excitonic insulator is one of the exotic phases of interacting electrons, produced by the Coulomb attraction between a small and equal number of electrons and holes, leading to the spontaneous formation of exciton pairs in narrow-gap semiconductors/semimetals. The layered chalcogenide Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ has been recently discussed as such an excitonic insulator with an excitation gap of ~250 meV below $T_c$ = 328 K. Here, we demonstrate a drastic collapse of the excitation gap in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ and the realization of a zero-gap state by moving the tip of a cryogenic scanning tunneling microscope towards the sample surface by a few angstroms. The collapse strongly suggests the many-body nature of the gap in the insulating state of Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$, consistent with the formation of an excitonic state. We argue that the collapse of the gap is driven predominantly by the electrostatic charge accumulation at the surface induced by the proximity of the tip and the resultant carrier doping of the excitonic insulator. Our results establish a novel phase-change function based on excitonic insulators.

We measured missing mass spectrum of the $^{12}{\rm C}(\gamma,p)$ reaction for the first time in coincidence with potential decay products from $\eta'$ bound nuclei. We tagged an ($\eta+p$) pair associated with the $\eta'N\to\eta N$ process in a nucleus. After applying kinematical selections to reduce backgrounds, no signal events were observed in the bound-state region. An upper limit of the signal cross section in the opening angle $\cos\theta^{\eta p}_{lab}<-0.9$ was obtained to be 2.2 nb/sr at the 90$\%$ confidence level. It is compared with theoretical cross sections, whose normalization ambiguity is suppressed by measuring a quasifree $\eta'$ production rate. Our results indicate a small branching fraction of the $\eta'N\to\eta N$ process and/or a shallow $\eta'$-nucleus potential., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Prior proposed observing approaches using event mixing technique for Bose-Einstein correlations (BEC) measurements in exclusive reactions with very low multiplicities are still unsatisfactory due to the problems of sample reduction and introducing extra and unnecessary fitting parameters. We here propose an event mixing method with a new mixing cut, named energy sum range (ESR) cut, to investigate two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations (BEC) in reactions with only two identical pions among three final state particles. This mixing method employs two-pion energy sum characteristic to control the mixing procedures, with no requirement on eliminating any original events. A cat-state is formed as the steady-state solution for the signal mode of an ideal, degenerate parametric oscillator, in the limit of negligible single-photon signal loss. In the presence of the signal loss, this is no longer true over timescales much longer than the damping time. However, for sufficient parametric nonlinearity, a cat-state can exist as a transient state. In this paper, we study the dynamics of the creation and decoherence of cat-states in degenerate parametric oscillation, both with and without the effect of a Kerr nonlinearity that applies to recent superconducting-circuit experiments generating cat-states in microwave cavities. We determine the time of formation and the lifetime of a cat-state in terms of three dimensionless parameters $\lambda$, $g$ and $\chi$. These relate to the driving strength, the parametric nonlinearity, and the Kerr nonlinearity, respectively. We find that the Kerr nonlinearity has little effect on the threshold parametric nonlinearity ($g>1$) required for the formation of cat-states, and does not significantly alter the decoherence time of the cat-state, but can reduce the time of formation. The quality of the cat-state increases with the value $g$, and can also improved by the Kerr nonlinearity. To verify the existence and quality of the cat-state, we consider several signatures, including interference fringes and negativity, and show how they can be computed. We simulate a superconducting-circuit experiment using published experimental parameters and found good agreement with experimental results, indicating that a nonclassical cat-like state with a small Wigner negativity is generated in the experiment. A stronger nonlinearity would lead to a cat-state with convincing cat-state signatures. Finally, we explore the feasibility of creating large cat-states with a coherent amplitude of 20, corresponding to 400 photons.

We show that parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry can be spontaneously broken in the recently reported energy level attraction of magnons and cavity photons. In the $\mathcal{PT}$-broken phase, magnon and photon form a high-fidelity Bell state with maximum entanglement. This entanglement is steady and robust against the perturbation of environment, in contrast to the general wisdom that expects instability of the hybridized state when the symmetry is broken. This anomaly is further understood by the compete of non-Hermitian evolution and particle number conservation of the hybridized system. As a comparison, neither $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry broken nor steady magnon-photon entanglement is observed inside the normal level repulsion case. Evidence for Bell's nonlocality is so far mainly restricted to microscopic systems, where the elements of reality that are negated predetermine results of measurements to within one spin unit. Any observed nonlocal effect (or lack of classical predetermination) is then limited to no more than the difference of a single photon or electron being detected or not (at a given detector). In this paper, we analyze experiments that report Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering form of nonlocality for mesoscopic photonic or Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) systems. Using an EPR steering parameter, we show how the EPR nonlocalities involved can be quantified for four-mode states, to give evidence of nonlocal effects corresponding to a two-mode number difference of $10^{5}$ photons, or of several tens of atoms (at a given site). We also show how the variance criterion of Duan-Giedke-Cirac and Zoller for EPR entanglement can be used to determine a lower bound on the number of particles in a pure two-mode EPR entangled or steerable state, and apply to experiments., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Photoproduction of the $\omega$ meson on the proton has been experimentally studied near the threshold. The total cross sections are determined at incident energies ranging from 1.09 to 1.15 GeV. The 1/2 and 3/2 spin-averaged scattering length $a_{\omega p}$ and effective range $r_{\omega p}$ between the $\omega$ meson and proton are estimated from the shape of the total cross section as a function of the incident photon energy: $a_{\omega p} = \left(-0.97^{+0.16_{\rm stat}}_{-0.16_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.03_{\rm syst}}_{-0.00_{\rm syst}}\right)+i \left(0.07^{+0.15_{\rm stat}}_{-0.14_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.17_{\rm syst}}_{-0.09_{\rm syst}}\right)$ fm and $r_{\omega p}=\left(+2.78^{+0.68_{\rm stat}}_{-0.54_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.11_{\rm syst}}_{-0.13_{\rm syst}}\right)+i\left(-0.01^{+0.46_{\rm stat}}_{-0.50_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.07_{\rm syst}}_{-0.00_{\rm syst}}\right)$ fm, resulting in a repulsive force. The real and imaginary parts for $a_{\omega p}$ and $r_{\omega p}$ are determined separately for the first time. Magnon-photon coupling has been experimentally realized inside a cavity and the emerging field known as cavity spintronics has attracted significant attention for its potential docking with quantum information science. However, one seldom knows whether this coupling implies an entanglement state among magnons and photons or not, which is crucial for its usage in quantum information. Here we study the entanglement properties among magnons and photons in an antiferromagnet-light system and find that the entanglement between magnon and photon is nearly zero while the magnon-magnon entanglement is very strong and it can be even further enhanced through the coupling with the cavity photons. The maximum enhancement occurs when the antiferromagnet reaches resonant with the light. The essential physics can be well understood within the picture of cavity induced cooling of magnon-magnon state near its joint vacuum with stronger entanglement. Our results are significant to extend the cavity spintronics to quantum manipulation and further provide an alternate to manipulate the deep strong correlations of continuous variable entanglement with a generic stable condition and easy tunability., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The spontaneous formation of lattice structure of quantized vortices is a characteristic feature of superfluidity in closed systems under thermal equilibrium. In exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensate, which is a typical example of macroscopic quantum state in open systems, spontaneous vortex lattices have also been proposed by not yet observed. Here, we take into account the finite decay rate of exciton reservoir, and theoretically investigate the vortex structures in circularly pumped polariton Bose-Einstein condensate. Our results show that a decreasing reservoir decay rate can reduce the number of vortices and destabilize the lattice structure, hence is unfavorable to the formation and observation of vortex lattices. These detrimental effects can be prevailed by applying an external angular momentum.

A new event mixing constraint, namely invariant-mass/energy hierarchy correspondence (IMEHC) cut, is introduced for the low-multiplicity event mixing technique for the purpose of measuring Bose-Einstein correlations (BEC) in exclusive reactions with $\pi \pi X$ final state particles.The mixing cut is relevant to the hierarchy of the invariant mass of $\pi X$ system and two bosons energy hierarchy. Numerical tests are performed to check the validity of the new mixing method. As long as the measurements of BEC parameters $r_0$ and $\lambda_2$ are considered, this new mixing method is effective to observe BEC effects and the systematic bias of $r_0$ and $\lambda_2$ are smaller than the previously proposed mixing cut., Comment: 8 pages, Acta Physica Polonica B, 2018

With the recent discovery of the quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI), which exhibits the conductive quantum Hall edge states without external magnetic field, it becomes possible to create a novel topological superconductor (SC) by introducing superconductivity into these edge states. In this case, two distinct topological superconducting phases with one or two chiral Majorana edge modes were theoretically predicted, characterized by Chern numbers (N ) of 1 and 2, respectively. We present spectroscopic evidence from Andreev reflection experiments for the presence of chiral Majorana modes in a Nb / (Cr0.12Bi0.26Sb0.62)2Te3 heterostructure with distinct signatures attributed to two different topological superconducting phases. The results are in qualitatively good agreement with the theoretical predictions.

Coherent double neutral-pion photoproduction on the deuteron, $\gamma{d}${$\to$}$\pi^0\pi^0{d}$, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from 0.75 to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section as a function of the $\gamma{d}$ center-of-mass energy shows resonance-like behavior, which peaks at approximately 2.47 and 2.63 GeV. The measured angular distribution of deuteron emission is rather flat, which cannot be reproduced by the kinematics of quasi-free $\pi^0\pi^0$ production with deuteron coalescence. In $\pi^0d $ invariant-mass distributions, a clear peak is observed at $2.14{\pm}0.01$ GeV$/c^2$ with a width of $0.09{\pm}0.01$ GeV$/c^2$. The spin-parity of this state is restricted to $1^+$, $2^+$ or $3^-$ from the angular distributions of the two $\pi^0$s. The present work shows strong evidence for the existence of an isovector dibaryon resonance with a mass of 2.14 GeV$/c^2$. Characterizing quantum phase transitions through quantum correlations has been deeply developed for a long time, while the connections between dynamical phase transitions (DPTs) and quantum entanglement is not yet well understood. In this work, we show that the time-averaged two-mode entanglement in the spin space reaches a maximal value when it undergoes a DPT induced by external perturbation in a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate. We employ the von Neumann entropy and a correlation-based entanglement criterion as entanglement measures and find that both of them can infer the existence of DPT. While the von Neumann entropy works only for a pure state at zero temperature and requires state tomography to reconstruct, the experimentally more feasible correlation-based entanglement criterion acts as an excellent proxy for entropic entanglement and can determine the existence of entanglement for a mixed state at finite temperature, making itself an excellent indicator for DPT. Our work provides a deeper understanding about the connection between DPTs and quantum entanglement, and may allow the detection of DPT via entanglement become accessible as the examined criterion is suitable for measuring entanglement., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

The theory of phase control of coherence, entanglement and quantum steering is developed for an optomechanical system composed of a single mode cavity containing a partially transmitting dielectric membrane and driven by short laser pulses. The closed loop in the coupling creates interfering channels which depend on the relative phase of the coupling strengths of the field modes to the mechanical mode. We show several interesting phase dependent effects such as reversible population transfer from one field mode to the other, creation of collective modes, and induced coherence without induced emission. These effects result from perfect mutual coherence between the field modes which is preserved even if one of the modes is not populated. Depending on the phase, the field modes can act on the mechanical mode collectively or individually resulting, respectively, in tripartite or bipartite entanglement. In addition, we examine the phase sensitivity of quantum steering of the mechanical mode by the field modes is investigated. Deterministic phase transfer of the steering from bipartite to collective is predicted and optimum steering corresponding to perfect EPR state can be achieved. These different types of quantum steering can be distinguished experimentally by measuring the coincidence rate between two detectors adjusted to collect photons of the output cavity modes. In particular, we find that the minima of the interference pattern of the coincidence rate signal the bipartite steering, while the maxima signal the collective steering., Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures

We develop an event mixing technique with a missing mass consistency (MMC) cut and a pion energy (PE) cut for the measurement of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations (BEC) in reactions with only two identical pions produced in the final state. A multi mixing mode that allows one event to be mixed with multiple other events is proposed for the purpose of improving the statistics of mixed samples, and compared with the single mixing mode which requires one original event can be mixed only once. Numerical tests using the {\gamma}p -> {\pi}^0 {\pi}^0 p events are used to testify its ability to measure two-pion correlations. We construct quantifiable generalisations of Leggett-Garg tests for macro/ mesoscopic realism and noninvasive measurability that apply when not all outcomes of measurement can be identified as arising from one of two macroscopically distinguishable states. We report the results of searches for solar axions and galactic dark matter axions or axion-like particles with CDEX-1 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory, using 335.6 kg-days of data from a p-type point-contact germanium detector. The data are compatible with the background model and no excess signals are observed. Limits of solar axions on the model independent coupling $g_{Ae}<2.5\times10^{-11}$ from Compton, bremsstrahlung, atomic-recombination and deexcitation channel and $g^{\text{eff}}_{AN}\times g_{Ae}<6.1\times10^{-17}$ from $^{57}$Fe M1 transition at 90 % confidence level are derived. Within the framework of the DFSZ and KSVZ models, our results exclude the axion mass heavier than 0.9 eV/c$^{2}$ and 173 eV/c$^{2}$, respectively. The total cross sections were measured for coherent double neutral-pion photoproduction on the deuteron at incident energies below 0.9 GeV for the first time. No clear resonance-like behavior is observed in the excitation function for $W_{\gamma d}=2.38$--2.61 GeV, where the $d^*(2380)$ dibaryon resonance observed at COSY is expected to appear. The measured excitation function is consistent with the existing theoretical calculation for this reaction. The upper limit of the total cross section is found to be $0.034$~$\mu$b for the dibaryon resonance at $W_{\gamma d}=2.37$~GeV (90\% confidence level) in the $\gamma d \to \pi^0\pi^0 d$ reaction., Comment: submitted to Physics Letters B

We observe spin squeezing in three-component Bose gases where all three hyperfine states are coupled by synthetic spin-orbit coupling. This phenomenon is a direct consequence of spin-orbit coupling, as can be seen clearly from an effective spin Hamiltonian. By solving this effective model analytically with the aid of a Holstein-Primakoff transformation for spin-1 system in the low excitation limit, we conclude that the spin-nematic squeezing, a novel category of spin squeezing existing exclusively in large spin systems, is enhanced with increasing spin-orbit intensity and effective Zeeman field, which correspond to Rabi frequency and two-photon detuning within the Raman scheme for synthetic spin-orbit coupling, respectively. These trends of dependence are in clear contrast to spin-orbit coupling induced spin squeezing in spin-1/2 systems. We also analyze the effects of harmonic trap and interaction with realistic experimental parameters numerically, and find that a strong harmonic trap favors spin-nematic squeezing. We further show spin-nematic squeezing can be interpreted as two-mode entanglement or two-spin squeezing at low excitation. The free volume comprised between rough surfaces in contact governs the fluid/gas transport properties across networks of cracks and the leakage/percolation phenomena in seals. In this study, a fundamental insight into the evolution of the free volume depending on the mean plane separation, on the real contact area and on the applied pressure is gained in reference to fractal surfaces whose contact response is solved using the boundary element method. Particular attention is paid to the effect of the surface fractal dimension and of the surface resolution on the predicted results. The free volume domains corresponding to different threshold levels are found to display fractal spatial distributions whose bounds to their fractal dimensions are theoretically derived. A synthetic formula based on the probability distribution function of the free volumes is proposed to synthetically interpret the numerically observed trends., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures

We investigate the dependence of friction forces on normal load in incommensurate micrometer size contacts between atomically smooth single-crystal graphite surfaces under ambient conditions. Our experimental results show that these contacts exhibit superlubricity (super-low friction), which is robust against the application of normal load. The measured friction coefficients are essentially zero and independent of the external normal load up to a pressure of 1.67 MPa. The CDEX-1 experiment conducted a search of low-mass (< 10 GeV/c2) Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) dark matter at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory using a p-type point-contact germanium detector with a fiducial mass of 915 g at a physics analysis threshold of 475 eVee. We report the hardware set-up, detector characterization, data acquisition and analysis procedures of this experiment. No excess of unidentified events are observed after subtraction of known background. The copper silver selenide has two phases: the low-temperature semimetal phase ({\alpha}-CuAgSe) and high-temperature phonon-glass superionic phase (\b{eta}-CuAgSe). In this work, the electric transport and thermoelectric properties of the two phases are investigated. It is revealed that the \b{eta}-CuAgSe is a p-type semiconductor and exhibits low thermal conductivity while the {\alpha}-CuAgSe shows metallic conduction with dominant n-type carriers and low electrical resistivity. The thermoelectric figure of merit zT of the polycrystalline \b{eta}-CuAgSe at 623 K is ~0.95, suggesting that superionic CuAgSe can be a promising thermoelectric candidate in the intermediate temperature range., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

The Daya Bay experiment was the first to report simultaneous measurements of reactor antineutrinos at multiple baselines leading to the discovery of $\bar{\nu}_e$ oscillations over km-baselines. Subsequent data has provided the world's most precise measurement of $\rm{sin}^22\theta_{13}$ and the effective mass splitting $\Delta m_{ee}^2$. The experiment is located in Daya Bay, China where the cluster of six nuclear reactors is among the world's most prolific sources of electron antineutrinos. Multiple antineutrino detectors are deployed in three underground water pools at different distances from the reactor cores to search for deviations in the antineutrino rate and energy spectrum due to neutrino mixing. Instrumented with photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), the water pools serve as shielding against natural radioactivity from the surrounding rock and provide efficient muon tagging. Arrays of resistive plate chambers over the top of each pool provide additional muon detection. The antineutrino detectors were specifically designed for measurements of the antineutrino flux with minimal systematic uncertainty. Relative detector efficiencies between the near and far detectors are known to better than 0.2%. With the unblinding of the final two detectors' baselines and target masses, a complete description and comparison of the eight antineutrino detectors can now be presented. A practical scheme for the demonstration of perfect one-sided device-independent quantum secret sharing is proposed. The scheme involves a three-mode optomechanical system in which a pair of independent cavity modes is driven by short laser pulses and interact with a movable mirror. We demonstrate that by tuning the laser frequency to the blue (anti-Stokes) sideband of the average frequency of the cavity modes, the modes become mutually coherent and then may collectively steer the mirror mode to a perfect Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen state. The scheme is shown to be experimentally feasible, it is robust against the frequency difference between the modes, mechanical thermal noise and damping, and coupling strengths of the cavity modes to the mirror., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Large scale circuit simulation, such as power delivery network analysis, has become increasingly challenge in the VLSI design verification flow. Power delivery network can be simulated by both SPICE-type circuit-based model and eletromagnetics-based model when full-wave accuracy is desired. In the early time of the time domain finite element simulation for integrated circuit, the modes having the highest eigenvalues supported by the numerical system will be excited. Because of the band limited source, after the early time, the modes having a resonance frequency well beyond the input frequency band will die down, and all physically important high-order modes and DC mode will show up and become dominant. Among these modes, the DC mode is the last one to show up. Although the convergence criterion is not applied on the DC mode, the existence of DC mode in the field solution will deteriorate the convergence rate of the first several high order modes. Therefore, this paper first analyzed the mathematic characteristics of the DC mode and proposed a rigorous and fast solution to extract the DC mode from the numerical system in order to speed up the convergence rate. Experimental results demonstrated the robustness and superior performance of this method.

The bistability of ordered spin states in ferromagnets (FMs) provides the magnetic memory functionality. Traditionally, the macroscopic moment of ordered spins in FMs is utilized to write information on magnetic media by a weak external magnetic field, and the FM stray field is used for reading. However, the latest generation of magnetic random access memories demonstrates a new efficient approach in which magnetic fields are replaced by electrical means for reading and writing. This concept may eventually leave the sensitivity of FMs to magnetic fields as a mere weakness for retention and the FM stray fields as a mere obstacle for high-density memory integration. In this paper we report a room-temperature bistable antiferromagnetic (AFM) memory which produces negligible stray fields and is inert in strong magnetic fields. We use a resistor made of an FeRh AFM whose transition to a FM order 100 degrees above room-temperature, allows us to magnetically set different collective directions of Fe moments. Upon cooling to room-temperature, the AFM order sets in with the direction the AFM moments pre-determined by the field and moment direction in the high temperature FM state. For electrical reading, we use an antiferromagnetic analogue of the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR). We report microscopic theory modeling which confirms that this archetypical spintronic effect discovered more than 150 years ago in FMs, can be equally present in AFMs. Our work demonstrates the feasibility to realize room-temperature spintronic memories with AFMs which greatly expands the magnetic materials base for these devices and offers properties which are unparalleled in FMs.

We report directional point-contact spectroscopy data on the novel Bi2Te3/Fe1+yTe interfacial superconductor for a Bi2Te3 thickness of 9 quintuple layers, bonded by van der Waals epitaxy to a Fe1+yTe film at an atomically sharp interface. Our data show a very large superconducting twin-gap structure with an energy scale exceeding that of bulk FeSe or FeSe1-xTex by a factor of 4. While the larger gap is isotropic and attributed to a thin FeTe layer in proximity of the interface, the smaller gap has a pronounced anisotropy and is associated with proximity-induced superconductivity in the topological insulator Bi2Te3. Zero resistance is lost above 8 K, but superconducting fluctuations are visible up to at least 12 K and the large gap is replaced by a pseudogap that persists up to 40 K. The spectra show a pronounced zero-bias conductance peak in the superconducting state, which may be a signature of an unconventional pairing mechanism.

Quantum discord quantifies how much Alice's system is disrupted after a measurement is performed on Bob's. Conceptually, this behavior acts the same way as quantum steering and we find that the discord grows with better steering from Bob to Alice. Using Venn diagrams, the relations between the different classes of Gaussian continuous variable entanglement and the links to discord for the squeezed-thermal states are established. We identify a directional quantum teleportation task for each class of squeezed-thermal state entanglement, and establish a unified signature for quantum steering, entanglement and discord beyond entanglement. Quantum steering and discord are promising candidates to quantify the potential of the directional quantum tasks where Alice and Bob possess asymmetrically noisy channels., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We report results of a search for light Dark Matter WIMPs with CDEX-1 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory, based on 53.9 kg-days of data from a p-type point-contact germanium detector enclosed by a NaI(Tl) crystal scintillator as anti-Compton detector. The event rate and spectrum above the analysis threshold of 475 eVee are consistent with the understood background model. Part of the allowed regions for WIMP-nucleus coherent elastic scattering at WIMP mass of 6-20 GeV are probed and excluded. Independent of interaction channels, this result contradicts the interpretation that the anomalous excesses of the CoGeNT experiment are induced by Dark Matter, since identical detector techniques are used in both experiments., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

The China Dark Matter Experiment reports results on light WIMP dark matter searches at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory with a germanium detector array with a total mass of 20 g. The physics threshold achieved is 177 eVee ("ee" represents electron equivalent energy) at 50% signal efficiency. We demonstrate a complete, probabilistic quantum dynamical simulation of the standard nonlinear Hamiltonian of optomechanics, including decoherence at finite temperatures. Robust entanglement of an optical pulse with the oscillator is predicted, as well as strong quantum steering between the optical and mechanical systems. Importantly, our probabilistic quantum simulation method uses the positive-P technique, which is scalable to large Hilbert spaces.

Experiments have reported the entanglement of two spatially separated macroscopic atomic ensembles at room temperature (Krauter et al 2011 Phys. Rev. Lett. 107 080503; Julsgaard et al 2001 Nature 413 400). We show how an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) paradox is realizable with this experiment. Our proposed test involves violation of an inferred Heisenberg uncertainty principle, which is a sufficient condition for an EPR paradox. This is a stronger test of nonlocality than entanglement. Our proposal would enable the first definitive confirmation of quantum EPR paradox correlations between two macroscopic objects at room temperature. This is a necessary intermediate step towards a nonlocal experiment with causal measurement separations. The China Dark matter Experiment collaboration reports the first experimental limit on WIMP dark matter from 14.6 kg-day of data taken with a 994 g p-type point-contact germanium detector at the China Jinping underground Laboratory where the rock overburden is more than 2400 m. The energy threshold achieved was 400 eVee. The theory of first strain gradient elasticity (SGE) is widely used to model size and non-local effects observed in materials and structures. For a material whose microstructure is centrosymmetric, SGE is characterized by a sixth-order elastic tensor in addition to the classical fourth-order elastic tensor. Even though the matrix form of the sixth-order elastic tensor is well-known in the isotropic case, its complete matrix representations seem to remain unavailable in the anisotropic cases. In the present paper, the explicit matrix representations of the sixth-order elastic tensor are derived and given for all the 3D anisotropic cases in a compact and well-structured way. We develop the concept of genuine N-partite Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering. This nonlocality is the natural multipartite extension of the original EPR paradox. Useful properties emerge that are not guaranteed for genuine multipartite entangled states. In particular, there is a close link with the task of one-sided device-independent quantum secret sharing. We describe how to generate an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) paradox between a mesoscopic mechanical oscillator and an optical pulse. We find two types of paradox, defined by whether it is the oscillator or the pulse that shows the effect Schrodinger called "steering". Only the oscillator paradox addresses the question of mesoscopic local reality for a massive system. In that case, EPR's "elements of reality" are defined for the oscillator, and it is these elements of reality that are falsified (if quantum mechanics is complete). For this sort of paradox, we show that a thermal barrier exists, meaning that a threshold level of pulse-oscillator interaction is required for a given thermal occupation n_0 of the oscillator. We find there is no equivalent thermal barrier for the entanglement of the pulse with the oscillator, nor for the EPR paradox that addresses the local reality of the optical system. Finally, we examine the possibility of an EPR paradox between two entangled oscillators. We report an improved measurement of the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ from the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. We exclude a zero value for $\sin^22\theta_{13}$ with a significance of 7.7 standard deviations. Electron antineutrinos from six reactors of 2.9 GW$_{\rm th}$ were detected in six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (flux-weighted baselines of 470 m and 576 m) and one far (1648 m) underground experimental halls. Using 139 days of data, 28909 (205308) electron antineutrino candidates were detected at the far hall (near halls). The ratio of the observed to the expected number of antineutrinos assuming no oscillations at the far hall is $0.944\pm 0.007({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.003({\rm syst.})$. An analysis of the relative rates in six detectors finds $\sin^22\theta_{13}=0.089\pm 0.010({\rm stat.})\pm0.005({\rm syst.})$ in a three-neutrino framework., Comment: 21 pages, 24 figures.
