Magnetic gates in close proximity to graphene can induce ferromagnetic correlations. We study the effect of such induced magnetization dependent Zeeman splittings on the graphene transport properties. We estimate that induced spin splittings of the order of \Delta ~ 5 meV could be achieved with the use of magnetic insulator gates, e.g. EuO-gates, deposited on top of graphene. We demonstrate that such splittings in proximity induced ferromagnetic graphene could be determined directly from the tunneling resonances in the linear response conductance, as the top gate creates also a tunable barrier in the graphene layer. We show how such splittings could also be determined independently by magnetoresistance measurements in a spin-valve geometry. Because the spin polarization of the current near the Dirac point increases with the length of the barrier, long magnetic gates are desirable for determining \Delta experimentally., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures

Norwegian participation in the JITOL (Just in Time Open Learning) professional training project provided experience with electronic networks and distribution of learning material. A national project, NITOL (Norwaynet with Information Technology for Open Learning), was established that applies JITOL to higher education. Four Norwegian universities and colleges offered courses on the academic network, Norwaynet. (AEF)

Initial measurements on I-asterisk yields of alkyl iodides at 266 nm are reported using gain vs. absorption spectroscopy with an InGaAsP diode probe laser. The results are 102 percent + or - 4 percent, 102 percent + or - 7 percent, and 73 percent + or - 4 percent for n-C3F7I, i-C3F7I, and CH3I respectively. Future prospects for the development of diode laser systems and for their use in dynamical studies are discussed.

Various techniques have been used to study photodissociation dynamics of the halogens and interhalogens. The quantum yields obtained by these techniques differ widely. The present investigation is concerned with a qualitatively new approach for obtaining highly accurate quantum yields for electronically excited states. This approach makes it possible to obtain an accuracy of 1 percent to 3 percent. It is shown that measurement of the initial transient gain/absorption vs the final absorption in a single time-resolved signal is a very accurate technique in the study of absolute branching fractions in photodissociation. The new technique is found to be insensitive to pulse and probe laser characteristics, molecular absorption cross sections, and absolute precursor density.
