The paper reports results of a study of the distribution of productivity among sociologists who publish. Previous research had indicated that a large percentage of sociologists do not publish very often. In this study, a random sample of 300 Ph.D. members of the American Sociological Association were queried about their publishing activities. The questionnaire limited the responses to publications, papers, and other means by which findings of the sociologists' dissertations had been disseminated. Tables of response data show that 54% of all the articles published were written by only 25% of the people in the survey. Thus, it is evident that a majority of the articles are written by a minority of the sociologists. Another analysis was performed to see whether the large number of recent Ph.D. recipients was inflating the percentage of those with few publications. The analysis excluded sociologists who had received their degrees after 1969. Again, a high percentage of articles was attributed to a small percentage of individuals. The conclusion is that there is a highly uneven distribution of productivity among Ph.D. sociologists in the United States. (Author/AV)

The knowledge of alcohol and drinking behavior of collegiate nursing students was studied in 1982-1983 and 1984-1985. The questionnaire included demographic items, questions regarding the consumption of alcohol, 36 items tapping knowledge of alcohol, and 17 items concerning possible consequences of drinking. The 1982 sample consisted of 291 students at 72 four-year institutions, while the 1984 sample consisted of 170 students at the same institutions 2 years later. There were significant differences over time in responses to only three of the alcohol knowledge items. The findings indicate stability in the drinking patterns and problems of nursing students as well as in their alcohol knowledge. This suggests that greater efforts should be made to improve alcohol education at the collegiate level, especially in the preparation of nurses. Fifteen references are listed. (SW)

This paper identifies eminent persons in the field of sociology using three measures: 1) the number of sociologists who identify a peer as eminent (reputation score); 2) the mean ranking these individuals receive from peers (frequency score); and 3) the number of citations made in the literature to the work of such individuals (citation score). In 1977, questionnaires were mailed to a sample of 300 sociologists randomly selected from the membership of the American Sociological Association. Respondents were provided an alphabetical list of names found by Swatos and Swatos (1974) to have been the most frequently cited in introductory sociology texts. They were asked to rank the ten most significant sociologists. Names could be added to the list. The return rate was 61%. The number of citations to an individual's work was calculated using the 1976 volume of the "Social Sciences Citation Index." The results of all data indicated that while reputation and frequency were highly associated, citation was not closely associated with either. The author concluded that the frequency with which a sociologist's work is cited in the current journal literature provides an index of eminence that is quantitative, objective, and readily available. Reports on a nationwide sample of 52 colleges and universities examining the relationship between students' self-reported drinking patterns and problems and college administrator's perceptions of those problems, and the existence of campus alcohol policies, programs, and services. Investigated the possibility of ideological bias in the Rokeach Dogmatism Scale with student volunteers (N=79) who anonymously categorized each of the 40 items on Form E. Results showed that three items were identified as left/liberal and 10 were seen as being right/conservative by a majority of the students. (LLL)
