This paper examines key steps in the integration of school-based health centers in Massachusetts into managed care and describes the administrative and clinical impact of these relationships. Strategies include enhancing communication between SBHCs and health maintenance organizations, standardizing school-based care, and mandating integration of services through state contract language. Telephone survey of urban school-based health programs nationwide examined current programs, obstacles, and approaches for addressing students' needs. City size affected the amount of services provided overall; a clear relationship existed between number of providers employed and number/amount of screening services available. (SM)
