Aims. The goal of this work is to comprehensively characterize the impact of stellar multiplicity on Class II disks in the L1641 and L1647 regions of Orion A (~1-3 Myr), part of the Survey of Orion Disks with ALMA (SODA). We characterize the protostellar multiplicity using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), the ESO-VISTA, and Hubble Space telescopes. The resulting sample of 65 multiple systems represents the largest catalogue of wide binary systems to date (projected separation >1000 AU), allowing a more robust statistical characterization of the evolution and properties of protoplanetary disks. Methods. The disk population was observed in continuum with ALMA at 225 GHz, with a median rms of 1.5 Mearth. Combining these data (resolution ~1.1arcsec ) with the ESO-VISTA near-infrared survey of the Orion A cloud (resolution ~0.7arcsec ), multiple systems are assembled and selected by an iterative inside-out search in projected separation (>1000 AU). Results. We identify 61 binary systems, 3 triple systems, and one quadruple system. The separation range is between 1000 and 10^4 AU. The Herschel observations unveiled the complex organisation of the interstellar medium in networks of parsec-scale filaments over the past decade. At the same time, networks of fibers have been recognised describing the gas structures in star-forming regions at sub-parsec scales. We aim to investigate the dense gas organisation prior to the formation of stars in sample of 7 star-forming regions within Orion. This EMERGE Early ALMA Survey includes OMC-1/-2/-3/-4 South, LDN 1641N, NGC 2023, and the Flame Nebula, all surveyed at high spatial resolution (4.5'' or $\sim2000$ au) in N$_2$H$^+$ (1$-$0) using ALMA+IRAM-30m observations. We systematically investigated the star-forming gas spatial distribution, its column density variations, its thermal structure, and its internal motions in a wide range of environments. From the analysis of the gas kinematics, we identified and characterised a total of 152 velocity-coherent fibers in our survey, which appear to be the preferred organisational unit for the dense gas in low-, intermediate- and high-mass star-forming regions alike. Despite the uneven density of fibers within these sub-parsec networks, the masses and lengths of these objects show similar distributions and consistent median values, as well as (trans-)sonic motions, in all of our targets. The comparison between the fiber line masses and virial line masses suggests the majority of these objects to be sub-virial. Those fibers closer to the virial condition, however, also have the most protostars associated to them, proving to be intimately connected to star formation. Finally, the surface density of fibers is linearly correlated with the total dense gas mass throughout roughly one order of magnitude in both parameters. These findings demonstrate how the formation and evolution of fibers networks can explain the current star formation properties of their host region.

Despite their variety of scales throughout the interstellar medium, filaments in nearby low-mass clouds show a characteristic width of $\sim$ 0.1 pc from the analysis of {\it Herschel} observations. The origin of this characteristic width, however, has been a matter of intense discussions during the last decade. We explored a possible variation in this typical width with the EMERGE Early ALMA Survey, which includes seven star-forming regions in Orion (OMC-1/-2/-3/-4 South, LDN 1641N, NGC 2023, Flame Nebula). These targets, which exhibit different physical conditions, star formation histories, mass, and density regimes, were homogeneously surveyed at a resolution of $\sim$ 2000 au in N$_2$H$^+$ (1$-$0) with ALMA+IRAM-30m observations. We characterised the column density and temperature radial profiles of the 152 fibers identified in the survey using the automatic fitting routine FilChap. These Orion fibers show a departure from the isothermal condition with significant outward temperature gradients with $\nabla T_\mathrm{K} > 30$ K pc$^{-1}$. They also show a median full width at half maximum ($FWHM$) of $\sim 0.05$ pc, with a corresponding median aspect ratio of $\sim2$. More relevantly, we observe a systematic variation in these fiber $FWHM$ between different regions in our sample, and a direct inverse dependence of these $FWHM$ on their central column density, $N_0$, above $\gtrsim 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. This dependency agrees with the expected $N_0-FWHM$ anti-correlation predicted in previous theoretical studies. Our homogeneous analysis returns the first observational evidence of an intrinsic and systematic variation in the fiber widths across different star-forming regions. While sharing comparable mass, length, and kinematic properties in all of our targets, fibers appear to adjust their $FWHM$ to their density and to the pressure in their host environment.

Protostellar multiplicity is common at all stages and mass ranges. However, the factors that determine the multiplicity of protostellar systems have not been systematically characterized through their molecular gas. Nobeyama 45m Radio Observatory OTF maps of HCN, HNC, HCO$^+$, and N$_2$H$^+$ (J = 1--0) toward five subregions in Perseus, complemented with single pointing APEX observations of HNC (J = 4--3) are used to derive physical parameters of the dense gas. Both observations have angular resolutions of $\sim$18", equivalent to $\sim$5000 AU scales at the distance of Perseus. Kinetic gas temperature is derived from the $I$(HCN)/$I$(HNC) J = 1--0 ratio, and H$_2$ density is obtained from the HNC J=4--3/J=1--0 ratio. These parameters are used to obtain the N$_2$H$^+$ and HCO$^+$ gas masses. The inferred and derived parameters are compared to source parameters. Inferred mean kinetic gas temperature ($I$(HCN)/$I$(HNC) J=1--0 ratio; ranging between 15 and 26 K), and H$_2$ volumetric density (HNC J=4--3/J=1--0; 10$^5$ -- 10$^6$ cm$^{-3}$) do not show correlations with multiplicity in Perseus. The derived gas and dust masses, 1.3 to 16 $\times~10^{-9}$ M$_{\odot}$ for the N$_2$H$^+$ gas mass, 0.1 to 25 M$_{\odot}$ for envelope dust masses (850 $\mu$m), and 0.8 to 10 $\times~10^{-10}$ M$_{\odot}$ for the HCO$^+$ gas mass, are correlated to multiplicity and number of protostellar components. The warm gas masses are a factor of 16 lower than the cold gas masses. This work shows that gas and dust mass is correlated to multiplicity at $\sim$5000 AU scales in Perseus. Higher order multiples tend to have higher gas and dust masses in general, while close binaries (separations $\leq$7") and single protostars have similar gas and dust mass distributions. Submillimeter and millimeter wavelengths provide a unique view of the Universe, from the gas and dust that fills and surrounds galaxies to the chromosphere of our own Sun. Current single-dish facilities have presented a tantalising view of the brightest (sub-)mm sources, and interferometers have provided the exquisite resolution necessary to analyse the details in small fields, but there are still many open questions that cannot be answered with current facilities. In this report we summarise the science that is guiding the design of the Atacama Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (AtLAST). We demonstrate how tranformational advances in topics including star formation in high redshift galaxies, the diffuse circumgalactic medium, Galactic ecology, cometary compositions and solar flares motivate the need for a 50m, single-dish telescope with a 1-2 degree field of view and a new generation of highly multiplexed continuum and spectral cameras. AtLAST will have the resolution to drastically lower the confusion limit compared to current single-dish facilities, whilst also being able to rapidly map large areas of the sky and detect extended, diffuse structures. Its high sensitivity and large field of view will open up the field of submillimeter transient science by increasing the probability of serendipitous detections. Finally, the science cases listed here motivate the need for a highly flexible operations model capable of short observations of individual targets, large surveys, monitoring programmes, target of opportunity observations and coordinated observations with other observatories. Deuterated molecules and their molecular D/H-ratios (RD(D)) are important diagnostic tools to study the physical conditions of star-forming regions. The degree of deuteration, RD(D), can be significantly enhanced over the elemental D/H-ratio depending on physical parameters. Within the Cygnus Allscale Survey of Chemistry and Dynamical Environments (CASCADE), we aim to explore the large-scale distribution of deuterated molecules in the nearby Cygnus-X region. We focus on the analysis of large-scale structures of deuterated molecules in the filamentary region hosting the prominent Hii region DR21 and DR21(OH). Here we discuss the HCO+, HNC and HCN molecules and their deuterated isotopologues DCO+, DNC and DCN. The spatial distributions of integrated line emissions from DCO+, DNC, and DCN reveal morphological differences. DCO+ displays the most extended emission, characterized by several prominent peaks. Likewise, DNC exhibits multiple peaks, although its emission appears less extended compared to DCO+. In contrast to the extended emission of DCO+ and DNC, DCN appears the least extended, with distinct peaks. Focusing only on the regions where all three molecules are observed, the mean deuteration ratios for each species are 0.01 for both DNC and DCN, and = 0.005 for DCO+. Anti-correlations are found with deuterated molecules and dust temperature or N(H2). The strongest anti-correlation is found with RD(DCO+) and N(H2). The anti-correlation of RD(DCO+) and N(H2) is suggested to be a result of a combination of an increased photodissociation degree and shocks. A strong positive correlation between the ratio of integrated intensities of DCN and DNC with their 13C-isotopologues, are found in high column density regions. The positive relationship between the ratios implies that the D-isotopologue of the isomers could potentially serve as a tracer for the kinetic gas temperature., Comment: 24 pages, 21 figures, accepted to A&A

ALMA's high-resolution images allow to resolve the filamentary structure of the ISM down to few thousand au at kpc distances. We aim to systematically quantify the impact of the interferometric response and the effects of the short-spacing information during the characterization of the ISM structure using ALMA observations. We create a series of continuum ALMA synthetic observations to test the recovery of the observational properties of dense cores and filaments (i.e. intensity peak, radial profile, and width) at different scales. We compare the results obtained with and without different data combination techniques using different ALMA arrays and SD telescopes in simulated data and real observations. Our analysis illustrates the severity of interferometric filtering effects. ALMA-12m alone observations show significant scale-dependent flux losses systematically corrupting (>30%error) all the physical properties inferred in cores and filaments (i.e. column density, mass, and size) before the maximum recoverable scale of the interferometer. These effects are only partially mitigated by the addition of the ALMA ACA-7m array although degrading the telescope PSF. Our results demonstrate only the addition of the ALMA Total Power information allows to recover the true sky emission down to few times the ALMA beamsize with satisfactory accuracy (<10% error). Additional tests demonstrate the emission recovery at all scales is further improved if the 7mTP data are replaced by maps obtained by a larger SD telescope (e.g., IRAM-30m), even if the latter are noisier than expected. These observational biases particularly affect partially resolved targets, becoming critical especially for studies in nearby regions such as Taurus or Orion. Cosmic rays regulate the dynamics and the chemical processes in the densest and coldest regions of the ISM. Still, the determination of the cosmic-ray ionisation rate of H$_2$ (${\zeta^{\rm ion}_{{\rm H}_2}}$) is plagued by uncertainties in the adopted chemical networks and the analysis techniques. This work aims to homogeneously estimate the ${\zeta^{\rm ion}_{{\rm H}_2}}$ at parsec scales towards the Orion Molecular Clouds OMC-2 and OMC-3, probing its variation across a whole star-forming region and a range of column densities never explored before. The most recent ${\zeta^{\rm ion}_{{\rm H}_2}}$ estimates are based on o$-$H$_2$D$^+$, whose abundance we proxy through CO depletion taking advantage of the existing correlation between the two parameters. We therefore employ observations of C$^{18}$O (2$-$1), HCO$^+$ (1$-$0) and DCO$^+$ (3$-$2) towards OMC-2 and OMC-3 to determine the depletion factor, the deuteration fraction and, ultimately, a map of ${\zeta^{\rm ion}_{{\rm H}_2}}$ in these two regions. The depletion factors and deuteration fractions correlate with the total column density of H$_2$, the N$_2$H$^+$ emission and the coldest fields across OMC-2 and OMC-3. The cosmic-ray ionisation rate shows values of ${\zeta^{\rm ion}_{{\rm H}_2}}\sim5\times10^{-18}-10^{-16}$~s$^{-1}$, in agreement with previous o$-$H$_2$D$^+$-based estimates. In addition, it shows an overall decrease for increasing $N(\mathrm{H_2}$), consistently with the predictions from theoretical models. Our approach provides results comparable with theoretical predictions and previous independent studies, confirming the robustness of the analytical framework and the viability of CO depletion as proxy for o$-$H$_2$D$^+$. By exploring the major limitations of the method, we suggest interferometric observations as mandatory to reliably constrain the ${\zeta^{\rm ion}_{{\rm H}_2}}$ also at parsec scales.

(Abridged) Recent molecular surveys have revealed a rich gas organization of sonic-like fibers in all kind of environments prior to the formation of low- and high-mass stars. This paper introduces the EMERGE project aiming to investigate whether complex fiber arrangements could explain the origin of high-mass stars and clusters. We analyzed the EMERGE Early ALMA Survey including 7 star-forming regions in Orion (OMC-1/2/3/4 South, L1641N, NGC2023, and Flame Nebula) homogeneously surveyed in both molecular lines (N$_2$H$^+$ J=1-0, HNC J=1-0, plus HC3N J=10-9) and 3mm-continuum using a combination of interferometric ALMA mosaics and IRAM-30m single-dish (SD) maps. Based on our low-resolution (SD) observations, we describe the global properties of our sample covering a wide range of physical conditions including low-, intermediate, and high-mass star-forming regions in different evolutionary stages. Their comparison with ancillary YSO catalogs denotes N$_2$H$^+$ as the best proxy for the dense, star-forming gas in our targets showing a constant star formation efficiency and a fast time evolution of <1 Myr. While apparently clumpy and filamentary in our SD data, all targets show a much more complex fibrous substructure at the enhanced resolution of our ALMA+IRAM-30m maps. A large number of filamentary features at sub-parsec scales are clearly recognized in the high-density gas traced by N$_2$H$^+$ directly connected to the formation of individual protostars. This complex gas organization appears to extend further into the more diffuse gas traced by HNC. This paper presents the EMERGE Early ALMA survey including a first data release of continuum maps and spectral products for this project to be analysed in future papers of this series. As we learn more about the multi-scale interstellar medium (ISM) of our Galaxy, we develop a greater understanding for the complex relationships between the large-scale diffuse gas and dust in Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs), how it moves, how it is affected by the nearby massive stars, and which portions of those GMCs eventually collapse into star forming regions. The complex interactions of those gas, dust and stellar populations form what has come to be known as the ecology of our Galaxy. Because we are deeply embedded in the plane of our Galaxy, it takes up a significant fraction of the sky, with complex dust lanes scattered throughout the optically recognisable bands of the Milky Way. These bands become bright at (sub-)millimetre wavelengths, where we can study dust thermal emission and the chemical and kinematic signatures of the gas. To properly study such large-scale environments, requires deep, large area surveys that are not possible with current facilities. Moreover, where stars form, so too do planetary systems, growing from the dust and gas in circumstellar discs, to planets and planetesimal belts. Understanding the evolution of these belts requires deep imaging capable of studying belts around young stellar objects to Kuiper belt analogues around the nearest stars. Here we present a plan for observing the Galactic Plane and circumstellar environments to quantify the physical structure, the magnetic fields, the dynamics, chemistry, star formation, and planetary system evolution of the galaxy in which we live with AtLAST; a concept for a new, 50m single-dish sub-mm telescope with a large field of view which is the only type of facility that will allow us to observe our Galaxy deeply and widely enough to make a leap forward in our understanding of our local ecology., Comment: 27 pages, submitted to Open Research Europe as part of the AtLAST collection: https://open-research-europe.ec.europa.eu/collections/atlast/about

The interstellar medium is threaded by a hierarchy of filaments from large scales (~ 100 pc) to small scales (~ 0.1pc). The masses and lengths of these nested structures may reveal important constraints for cloud formation and evolution, but it is difficult to investigate from an evolutionary perspective using single observations. In this work, we extract simulated molecular clouds from the Cloud Factory galactic-scale ISM suite in combination with 3D Monte Carlo radiative transfer code POLARIS to investigate how filamentary structure evolves over time. We produce synthetic dust continuum observations in three regions with a series of snapshots and use the Filfinder algorithm to identify filaments in the dust derived column density maps. When the synthetic filaments mass and length are plotted on an M-L plot, we see a scaling relation of $L\propto M^{0.45}$ similar to that seen in observations, and find that the filaments are thermally supercritical. Projection effects systematically affect the masses and lengths measured for the filaments, and are particularly severe in crowded regions. In the filament Mass-Length (M-L) diagram we identify three main evolutionary mechanisms: accretion, segmentation, and dispersal. In particular we find that the filaments typically evolve from smaller to larger masses in the observational M-L plane, indicating the dominant role of accretion in filament evolution. Moreover, we find a potential correlation between line mass and filament growth rate. $Aims.$ We characterize the molecular-line emission of three clouds whose star-formation rates span one order of magnitude: California, Perseus, and Orion A. $Methods.$ We use stratified random sampling to select positions representing the different column density regimes of each cloud and observe them with the IRAM-30m telescope. We cover the 3 mm wavelength band and focus our analysis on CO, HCN, CS, HCO+, HNC, and N2H+. $Results.$ We find that the line intensities depend most strongly on the H2 column density. A secondary effect, especially visible in Orion A, is a dependence of the line intensities on the gas temperature. We explored a method that corrects for temperature variations and show that, when it is applied, the emission from the three clouds behaves very similarly. CO intensities vary weakly with column density, while the intensity of traditional dense-gas tracers such as HCN, CS, and HCO+ varies almost linearly with column density. N2H+ differs from all other species in that it traces only cold dense gas. The intensity of the rare HCN and CS isotopologs reveals additional temperature-dependent abundance variations. Overall, the clouds have similar chemical compositions that, as the depth increases, are sequentially dominated by photodissociation, gas-phase reactions, molecular freeze-out, and stellar feedback in the densest parts of Orion A. Our observations also allowed us to calculate line luminosities for each cloud, and a comparison with literature values shows good agreement. We used our HCN data to explore the behavior of the HCN conversion factor, finding that it is dominated by the emission from the outermost cloud layers. It also depends strongly on the gas kinetic temperature. Finally, we show that the HCN/CO ratio provides a gas volume density estimate, and that its correlation with the column density resembles that found in extragalactic observations., Comment: 36 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Molecular outflows are believed to be a key ingredient in the process of star formation. The molecular outflow associated with DR21 Main in Cygnus-X is one of the most extreme, in mass and size, molecular outflows in the Milky Way. The outflow is suggested to belong to a rare class of explosive outflows which are formed by the disintegration of protostellar systems.We aim to explore the morphology, kinematics,and energetics of the DR21 Main outflow, and compare those properties to confirmed explosive outflows to unravel the underlying driving mechanism behind DR21. Line and continuum emission are studied at a wavelength of 3.6\,mm with IRAM 30 m and NOEMA telescopes as part of the Cygnus Allscale Survey of Chemistry and Dynamical Environments (CASCADE) program. The spectra include ($J= 1-0$) transitions of HCO$^+$, HCN, HNC, N$_2$H$^+$, H$_2$CO, CCH tracing different temperature and density regimes of the outflowing gas at high-velocity resolution ($\sim$ 0.8 km s$^{-1}$). The map encompasses the entire DR21 Main outflow and covers all spatial scales down to a resolution of ~3" ($\sim$ 0.02 pc). Integrated intensity maps of the HCO$^+$ emission reveal a strongly collimated bipolar outflow with significant overlap of the blue- and red-shifted emission. The opening angles of both outflow lobes decrease with velocity, from $\sim80$ to 20$^{\circ}$ for the velocity range from 5 to 45 km s$^{-1}$ relative to the source velocity. No evidence is found for the presence of elongated, "filament-like" structures expected in explosive outflows. N$_2$H$^+$ emission near the western outflow lobe reveals the presence of a dense molecular structure which appears to be interacting with the DR21 Main outflow. The overall morphology as well as the detailed kinematics of the DR21 Main outflow is more consistent with that of a typical bipolar outflow instead of an explosive counterpart., Comment: 26 pages, 37 figures. Nitrogen hydrides such as NH$_3$ and N$_2$H$^+$ are widely used by Galactic observers to trace the cold dense regions of the interstellar medium. In external galaxies, because of limited sensitivity, HCN has become the most common tracer of dense gas over large parts of galaxies. We provide the first systematic measurements of N$_2$H$^+$(1-0) across different environments of an external spiral galaxy, NGC6946. We find a strong correlation ($r>0.98,p<0.01$) between the HCN(1-0) and N$_2$H$^+$(1-0) intensities across the inner $\sim8\mathrm{kpc}$ of the galaxy, at kiloparsec scales. This correlation is equally strong between the ratios N$_2$H$^+$(1-0)/CO(1-0) and HCN(1-0)/CO(1-0), tracers of dense gas fractions ($f_\mathrm{dense}$). We measure an average intensity ratio of N$_2$H$^+$(1-0)/HCN(1-0)$=0.15\pm0.02$ over our set of five IRAM-30m pointings. These trends are further supported by existing measurements for Galactic and extragalactic sources. This narrow distribution in the average ratio suggests that the observed systematic trends found in kiloparsec-scale extragalactic studies of $f_\mathrm{dense}$ and the efficiency of dense gas (SFE$_\mathrm{dense}$) would not change if we employed N$_2$H$^+$(1-0) as a more direct tracer of dense gas. At kiloparsec scales our results indicate that the HCN(1-0) emission can be used to predict the expected N$_2$H$^+$(1-0) over those regions. Our results suggest that, even if HCN(1-0) and N$_2$H$^+$(1-0) trace different density regimes within molecular clouds, subcloud differences average out at kiloparsec scales, yielding the two tracers proportional to each other., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

External FUV irradiation of protoplanetary disks has an important impact on their evolution and ability to form planets. However, nearby (<300 pc) star-forming regions lack sufficiently massive young stars, while the Trapezium Cluster and NGC 2024 have complicated star-formation histories and their O-type stars' intense radiation fields ($>10^4\,G_0$) destroy disks too quickly to study this process in detail. We study disk mass loss driven by intermediate (10 - 1000 $G_0$) FUV radiation fields in L1641 and L1647, where it is driven by more common A0 and B-type stars. Using the large (N=873) sample size offered by the Survey of Orion Disks with ALMA (SODA), we search for trends in the median disk dust mass with FUV field strength across the region as a whole and in two separate regions containing a large number of irradiated disks. For radiation fields between 1 - 100 $G_0$, the median disk mass in the most irradiated disks drops by a factor $\sim 2$ over the lifetime of the region, while the 95th percentile of disk masses drops by a factor 4 over this range. This effect is present in multiple populations of stars, and localized in space, to within 2 pc of ionizing stars. We fit an empirical irradiation - disk mass relation for the first time: $M_{\rm{dust,median}} = -1.3^{+0.14}_{-0.13} \log_{10}(F_{\rm{FUV}} / G_0) + 5.2^{+0.18}_{-0.19}$. High-energy processes are ubiquitous even in the earliest stages of protostellar evolution. Motivated by the results of our systematic search for intense centimeter radio flares in Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) and by rare findings of strong millimeter-wavelength variability, we have conducted a systematic search for such variability in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) using Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Rapid variability on timescales of minutes to hours in the (centimeter)millimeter-wavelength range indicates (gyro)synchrotron radiation. Additionally, mass accretion will also affect the millimeter-wavelength luminosity but typically on longer timescales. Beyond studies of individual YSOs, our characterization of strong millimeter-wavelength variability with ALMA in the ONC sets first systematic constraints on the occurrence of such variability in a large number of YSOs ($\sim$130). We report the discovery of an order of magnitude millimeter-flare within just a few minutes from a known YSO previously reported as a radio flaring source at cm-wavelengths (the "ORBS'' source). We also present an assessment of the systematic variability effects caused by the use of time-sliced imaging of a complex region. These are mostly due to the impact of a changing synthesized beam throughout the observations. We use simulated ALMA observations to reproduce and quantify these effects and set a lower limit for the variability that can be studied using our method in a complex region such as the ONC. Our results demonstrate that the utility of time domain analysis of YSOs extends into the millimeter-wavelength range, potentially interfering with the conversion of observed fluxes into dust masses., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

VISIONS is an ESO public survey of five nearby (d < 500 pc) star-forming molecular cloud complexes that are canonically associated with the constellations of Chamaeleon, Corona Australis, Lupus, Ophiuchus, and Orion. The survey was carried out with VISTA, using VIRCAM, and collected data in the near-infrared passbands J, H, and Ks. With a total on-sky exposure time of 49.4 h VISIONS covers an area of 650 deg$^2$, and it was designed to build an infrared legacy archive similar to that of 2MASS. Taking place between April 2017 and March 2022, the observations yielded approximately 1.15 million images, which comprise 19 TB of raw data. The observations are grouped into three different subsurveys: The wide subsurvey comprises shallow, large-scale observations and has visited the star-forming complexes six times over the course of its execution. The deep subsurvey of dedicated high-sensitivity observations has collected data on the areas with the largest amounts of dust extinction. The control subsurvey includes observations of areas of low-to-negligible dust extinction. Using this strategy, the VISIONS survey offers multi-epoch position measurements, is able to access deeply embedded objects, and provides a baseline for statistical comparisons and sample completeness. In particular, VISIONS is designed to measure the proper motions of point sources with a precision of 1 mas/yr or better, when complemented with data from VHS. Hence, VISIONS can provide proper motions for sources inaccessible to Gaia. VISIONS will enable addressing a range of topics, including the 3D distribution and motion of embedded stars and the nearby interstellar medium, the identification and characterization of young stellar objects, the formation and evolution of embedded stellar clusters and their initial mass function, as well as the characteristics of interstellar dust and the reddening law., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics on 19 January 2023

Modern interferometers routinely provide radio-astronomical images down to subarcsecond resolution. However, interferometers filter out spatial scales larger than those sampled by the shortest baselines, which affects the measurement of both spatial and spectral features. Complementary single-dish data are vital for recovering the true flux distribution of spatially resolved astronomical sources with such extended emission. In this work, we provide an overview of the prominent available methods to combine single-dish and interferometric observations. We test each of these methods in the framework of the CASA data analysis software package on both synthetic continuum and observed spectral data sets. We develop a set of new assessment tools that are generally applicable to all radio-astronomical cases of data combination. Applying these new assessment diagnostics, we evaluate the methods' performance and demonstrate the significant improvement of the combined results in comparison to purely interferometric reductions. We provide combination and assessment scripts as add-on material. We reconstruct the star formation history of the Sco-Cen OB association using a novel high-resolution age map of the region. We develop an approach to produce robust ages for Sco-Cen's recently identified 37 stellar clusters using the SigMA algorithm. The Sco-Cen star formation timeline reveals four periods of enhanced star formation activity, or bursts, remarkably separated by about 5 Myr. Of these, the second burst, which occurred about 15 million years ago, is by far the dominant, and most of Sco-Cen's stars and clusters were in place by the end of this burst. The formation of stars and clusters in Sco-Cen is correlated but not linearly, implying that more stars were formed per cluster during the peak of the star formation rate. Most of the clusters that are large enough to have supernova precursors were formed during the 15 Myr period. Star and cluster formation activity has been continuously declining since then. We have clear evidence that Sco-Cen formed from the inside out and contains 100-pc long chains of contiguous clusters exhibiting well-defined age gradients, from massive older clusters to smaller young clusters. These observables suggest an important role for feedback in forming about half of Sco-Cen stars, although follow-up work is needed to quantify this statement. Finally, we confirm that the Upper-Sco age controversy discussed in the literature during the last decades is solved: the nine clusters previously lumped together as Upper-Sco, a benchmark region for planet formation studies, exhibit a wide range of ages from 3 to 19 Myr., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures, 3 tables, submitted to A&A

Context. While it is generally assumed that Class II sources evolve largely in isolation from their environment, many still lie close to molecular clouds and may continue to interact with them. This may result in late accretion of material onto the disk that can significantly influence disk processes and planet formation. Aims. In order to systematically study late infall of gas onto disks, we identify candidate Class II sources in close vicinity to a reflection nebula (RN) that may be undergoing this process. Methods. First we targeted Class II sources with known kilo-au scale gas structures - possibly due to late infall of material - and we searched for RNe in their vicinity in optical and near-infrared images. Second, we compiled a catalogue of Class II sources associated with RNe and looked for the large-scale CO structures in archival ALMA data. Using the catalogues of protostars and RNe, we also estimated the probability of Class II sources interacting with surrounding material. Results. All of the sources with large-scale gas structures also exhibit some reflection nebulosity in their vicinity. Similarly, at least five Class II objects associated with a prominent RNe, and for which adequate ALMA observations are available, were found to have spirals or stream-like structures which may be due to late infall. We report the first detection of these structures around S CrA. Conclusions. Our results suggest that a non-negligible fraction of Class II disks in nearby star-forming regions may be associated with RNe and could therefore be undergoing late accretion of gas. The earliest evolution of star clusters involves a phase of co-existence of both newly-formed stars, and the gas from which they are forming. Observations of the gas in such regions provide a wealth of data that can inform the simulations which are needed to follow the evolution of such objects forward in time. We present a method for transforming the observed gas properties into initial conditions for simulations that include gas, stars, and ongoing star formation. We demonstrate our technique using the Orion Nebula Cluster. Since the observations cannot provide all the necessary information for our simulations, we make choices for the missing data and assess the impact of those choices. We find that the results are insensitive to the adopted choices of the gas velocity in the plane of the sky. The properties of the surrounding gas cloud (e.g. overall density and size), however, have an effect on the star formation rate and pace of assembly of the resultant star cluster. We also analyze the stellar properties of the cluster and find that the stars become more tightly clustered and in a stronger radial distribution even as new stars form in the filament., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present results of a wide-field (approximately 60 x 90 pc) ALMA mosaic of CO(2-1) and $^{13}$CO(2-1) emission from the molecular cloud associated with the 30 Doradus star-forming region. Three main emission complexes, including two forming a bowtie-shaped structure extending northeast and southwest from the central R136 cluster, are resolved into complex filamentary networks. Consistent with previous studies, we find that the central region of the cloud has higher line widths at fixed size relative to the rest of the molecular cloud and to other LMC clouds, indicating an enhanced level of turbulent motions. However, there is no clear trend in gravitational boundedness (as measured by the virial parameter) with distance from R136. Structures observed in $^{13}$CO are spatially coincident with filaments and are close to a state of virial equilibrium. In contrast, CO structures vary greatly in virialization, with low CO surface brightness structures outside of the main filamentary network being predominantly unbound. The interstellar medium contains filamentary structure over a wide range of scales. Understanding the role of this structure, both as a conduit of gas across the scales and a diagnostic tool of local physics, is a major focus of star formation studies. We review recent progress in studying filamentary structure in the ISM, interpreting its properties in terms of physical processes, and exploring formation and evolution scenarios. We include structures from galactic-scale filaments to tenth-of-a-parsec scale filaments, comprising both molecular and atomic structures, from both observational and theoretical perspectives. In addition to the literature overview, we assemble a large amount of catalogue data from different surveys and provide the most comprehensive census of filamentary structures to date. Our census consists of 22 803 filamentary structures, facilitating a holistic perspective and new insights. We use our census to conduct a meta-analysis, leading to a description of filament properties over four orders of magnitudes in length and eight in mass. Our analysis emphasises the hierarchical and dynamical nature of filamentary structures. Filaments do not live in isolation, nor they generally resemble static structures close to equilibrium. We propose that accretion during filament formation and evolution sets some of the key scaling properties of filaments. This highlights the role of accretion during filament formation and evolution and also in setting the initial conditions for star formation. Overall, the study of filamentary structures during the past decade has been observationally driven. While great progress has been made on measuring the basic properties of filaments, our understanding of their formation and evolution is clearly lacking. (Abridged) Surveys of protoplanetary disks in nearby star-forming regions (SFRs) have provided important information on their demographics, but due to their sample sizes, they cannot be used to study how disk properties vary with the environment. We conduct a survey of the unresolved millimeter continuum emission of 873 protoplanetary disks identified by Spitzer in the L1641 and L1647 regions of the Orion A cloud. This is the largest such survey yet, allowing us to identify even weak trends in the median disk mass as a function of position in the cloud and cluster membership. The sample detection rates and median masses are also compared to those of nearby (<300 pc) SFRs. The sample was observed with ALMA at 225 GHz, with a median rms of 0.08 mJy/beam (1.5 M$_{\oplus}$). The data were reduced and imaged using an innovative parallel data processing approach. We detect 58% (502/873) of the observed disks. This includes 20 disks with dust masses >100 M$_{\oplus}$, and two objects associated with extended dust emission. We infer a median disk dust mass in the full sample of $2.2^{+0.2}_{-0.2}$ M$_{\oplus}$. In L1641 and L1647 median dust masses are $2.1^{+0.2}_{-0.2}$ M$_{\oplus}$ and $2.6^{+0.4}_{-0.5}$ M$_{\oplus}$, respectively. The disk mass distribution of the full sample is similar to that of nearby low-mass SFRs at similar ages of 1-3 Myr. We find only weak trends in disk (dust) masses with galactic longitude and between the YSO clusters identified in the sample, with median masses varying by $\lesssim$ 50%. Age differences may explain these median disk mass variations. Apart from this, disk masses are essentially constant at scales of ~100 pc. HCN J$\, =\,$1$\, -\,$0 emission is commonly used as a dense gas tracer, thought to mainly arise from gas with densities $\mathrm{\sim 10^4\ -\ 10^5\ cm^{-3}}$. This has made it a popular tracer in star formation studies. However, there is increasing evidence from observational surveys of `resolved' molecular clouds that HCN can trace more diffuse gas. We investigate the relationship between gas density and HCN emission through post-processing of high resolution magnetohydrodynamical simulations of cloud-cloud collisions. We find that HCN emission traces gas with a mean volumetric density of $\mathrm{\sim 3 \times 10^3\ cm^{-3}}$ and a median visual extinction of $\mathrm{\sim 5\ mag}$. We therefore predict a characteristic density that is an order of magnitude less than the "standard" characteristic density of $\mathrm{n \sim 3 \times 10^4\ cm^{-3}}$. Indeed, we find in some cases that there is clear HCN emission from the cloud even though there is no gas denser than this standard critical density. We derive luminosity-to-mass conversion factors for the amount of gas at $A_{\rm V} > 8$ or at densities $n > 2.85 \times 10^{3} \: {\rm cm^{-3}}$ or $n > 3 \times 10^{4} \: {\rm cm^{-3}}$, finding values of $\alpha_{\rm HCN} = 6.79, 8.62$ and $27.98 \: {\rm M_{\odot}} ({\rm K \, km \, s^{-1} \, pc^{2}})$, respectively. In some cases, the luminosity to mass conversion factor predicted mass in regions where in actuality there contains no mass.

The [CII] 158$\mu$m fine-structure line is the dominant cooling line of moderate-density photodissociation regions (PDRs) illuminated by moderately bright far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation fields. We aim to understand the origin of [CII] emission and its relation to other tracers of gas and dust in PDRs. One focus is a study of the heating efficiency of interstellar gas as traced by the [CII] line to test models of the photoelectric heating of neutral gas by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules and very small grains. We make use of a one-square-degree map of velocity-resolved [CII] line emission toward the Orion Nebula complex, and split this out into the individual spatial components, the expanding Veil Shell, the surface of OMC4, and the PDRs associated with the compact HII region of M43 and the reflection nebula NGC 1977. We employed Herschel far-infrared photometric images to determine dust properties. Moreover, we compared with Spitzer mid-infrared photometry to trace hot dust and large molecules, and velocity-resolved IRAM 30m CO(2-1) observations of the molecular gas. The [CII] intensity is tightly correlated with PAH emission in the IRAC 8$\mu$m band and far-infrared emission from warm dust. The correlation between [CII] and CO(2-1) is very different in the four subregions and is very sensitive to the detailed geometry. Constant-density PDR models are able to reproduce the observed [CII], CO(2-1), and integrated far-infrared (FIR) intensities. We observe strong variations in the photoelectric heating efficiency in the Veil Shell behind the Orion Bar and these variations are seemingly not related to the spectral properties of the PAHs. The [CII] emission from the Orion Nebula complex stems mainly from moderately illuminated PDR surfaces. Future observations with the James Webb Space Telescope can shine light on the PAH properties that may be linked to these variations.

Context: Filamentary structures in nearby molecular clouds have been found to exhibit a characteristic width of 0.1 pc, as observed in dust emission. Understanding the origin of this universal width has become a topic of central importance in the study of molecular cloud structure and the early stages of star formation. Aims: We investigate how the recovered widths of filaments depend on the distance from the observer, by using previously published results from the Herschel Gould Belt Survey. Methods: We obtained updated estimates on the distances to nearby molecular clouds observed with Herschel by using recent results based on 3D dust extinction mapping and Gaia. We examined the widths of filaments from individual clouds separately, as opposed to treating them as a single population. We used these per-cloud filament widths to search for signs of variation amongst the clouds of the previously published study. Results: We find a significant dependence of the mean per-cloud filament width with distance. The distribution of mean filament widths for nearby clouds is incompatible with that of farther away clouds. The mean per-cloud widths scale with distance approximately as 4--5 times the beam size. We examine the effects of resolution by performing a convergence study of a filament profile in the Herschel image of the Taurus Molecular Cloud. We find that resolution can severely affect the shapes of radial profiles over the observed range of distances. Context: Gas accretion flows transport material from the cloud core onto the protostar. In multiple protostellar systems, it is not clear if the delivery mechanism is preferential or evenly distributed among the components. Aims: Gas accretion flows within IRAS16293 is explored out to 6000 AU. Methods: ALMA Band 3 observations of low-$J$ transitions of HNC, cyanopolyynes (HC$_3$N, HC$_5$N), and N$_2$H$^+$ are used to probe the cloud core structure at ~100 AU resolution. Additional Band 3 archival data provide low-$J$ HCN and SiO lines. These data are compared with the corresponding higher-$J$ lines from the PILS Band 7 data for excitation analysis. The HNC/HCN ratio is used as a temperature tracer. Results: The low-$J$ transitions of HC$_3$N, HC$_5$N, HNC and N$_2$H$^+$ trace extended and elongated structures from 6000 AU down to ~100 AU, without accompanying dust continuum emission. Two structures are identified: one traces a flow that is likely accreting toward the most luminous component of the system IRAS16293 A. Temperatures inferred from the HCN/HNC ratio suggest that the gas in this flow is cold, between 10 and 30 K. The other structure is part of an UV-irradiated cavity wall entrained by one of the outflows. The two outflows driven by IRAS16293 A present different molecular gas distributions. Conclusions: Accretion of cold gas is seen from 6000 AU scales onto IRAS16293 A, but not onto source B, indicates that cloud core material accretion is competitive due to feedback onto a dominant component in an embedded multiple protostellar system. The preferential delivery of material could explain the higher luminosity and multiplicity of source A compared to source B. The results of this work demonstrate that several different molecular species, and multiple transitions of each species, are needed to confirm and characterize accretion flows in protostellar cloud cores., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Recent observations from the MUSTANG2 instrument on the Green Bank Telescope have revealed evidence of enhanced long-wavelength emission in the dust spectral energy distribution (SED) in the Orion Molecular Cloud (OMC) 2/3 filament on 25" (0.1 pc) scales. Here we present a measurement of the SED on larger spatial scales (map size 0.5-3 degrees or 3-20 pc), at somewhat lower resolution (120", corresponding to 0.25 pc at 400 pc) using data from the Herschel satellite and Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). We then extend the 120"-scale investigation to other regions covered in the Herschel Gould Belt Survey (HGBS) specifically: the dense filaments in the southerly regions of Orion A; Orion B; and Serpens-S. Our dataset in aggregate covers approximately 10 square degrees, with continuum photometry spanning from 160um to 3mm. These OMC 2/3 data display excess emission at 3mm, though less (10.9% excess) than what is seen at higher resolution. Strikingly, we find that the enhancement is present even more strongly in the other filaments we targeted, with an average excess of 42.4% and 30/46 slices showing an inconsistency with the modified blackbody to at least 4{\sigma}. Applying this analysis to the other targeted regions, we lay the groundwork for future high-resolution analyses. Additionally, we also consider a two-component dust model motivated by Planck results and an amorphous grain dust model. While both of these have been proposed to explain deviations in emission from a generic modified blackbody (MBB), we find that they have significant drawbacks, requiring many spectral points or lacking experimental data coverage.

The [CII] $158\,\mu\mathrm{m}$ fine-structure line is one of the dominant coolants of the neutral interstellar medium. It is hence one of the brightest far-infrared emission lines and can be observed not only in star-forming regions throughout the Galaxy, but also in the diffuse interstellar medium and in distant galaxies. [CII] line emission has been suggested to be a powerful tracer of star-formation. We aim to understand the origin of [CII] emission and its relation to other tracers of interstellar gas and dust. This includes a study of the heating efficiency of interstellar gas as traced by the [CII] line to test models of gas heating. We make use of a one-square-degree map of velocity-resolved [CII] line emission towards the Orion Nebula complex, including M43 and NGC 1977. The [CII] intensity is tightly correlated with PAH emission in the IRAC $8\,\mu\mathrm{m}$ band and far-infrared emission from warm dust. The correlation between [CII] and CO(2-1) is affected by the detailed geometry of the region. We find particularly low [CII]-over-FIR intensity ratios towards large columns of (warm and cold) dust, which suggest the interpretation of the "[CII] deficit" in terms of a "FIR excess". A slight decrease in the FIR line-over-continuum intensity ratio can be attributed to a decreased heating efficiency of the gas. We find that, at the mapped spatial scales, predictions of the star-formation rate from [CII] emission underestimate the star-formation rate calculated from YSO counts in the Orion Nebula complex by an order of magnitude. [CII] emission from the Orion Nebula complex arises dominantly in the cloud surfaces, many viewed in edge-on geometry. [CII] emission from extended faint cloud surfaces may contribute significantly to the total [CII] emission on galactic scales.

We use Gaia DR2 data to survey the classic Monoceros OB1 region and look for the existence of a dispersed young population, co-moving with the cloud complex. An analysis of the distribution of proper motions reveals a 20-30 Myr association of young stars, about 300-400 pc away from the far side of the Mon OB1 complex, along the same general line-of-sight. We characterize the new association, Monoceros OB4, and estimate it contains between 1400 and 2500 stars, assuming a standard IMF, putting it on par in size with NGC\,2264. We find from the internal proper motions that Mon OB4 is unbound and expanding. Our results seem to unveil a larger and more complex Monoceros star formation region, suggesting an elongated arrangement that seems to be at least 300 x 60 pc., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters; 5 pages, 3 figures

Gas phase Elemental abundances in Molecular CloudS (GEMS) is an IRAM 30m Large Program designed to estimate the S, C, N, and O depletions and gas ionization degree, X(e-), in a set of star-forming filaments of Taurus, Perseus and Orion. Our immediate goal is to build up a complete database of molecular abundances that can serve as an observational basis for estimating X(e-) and the C, O, N, and S depletions through chemical modeling. We observed and derived the abundances of 14 species (13CO, C18O, HCO+, H13CO+, HC18O+, HCN, H13CN, HNC, HCS+, CS, SO, 34SO, H2S, and OCS) in 244 positions, covering the AV 3 to 100 mag, n(H2) a few 10$^{3}$ to 10$^6$ cm$^{-3}$, and Tk 10 to 30 K ranges in these clouds, avoiding protostars, HII regions, and outflows. A statistical analysis is carried out to identify general trends between different species and with physical parameters. Relations between molecules reveal strong linear correlations which define three different families: (1) 13CO and C18O; (2) H13CO+, HC18O+, H13CN, and HNC; and (3) the S-bearing molecules. The abundances of the CO isotopologs increase with the gas kinetic temperature until TK 15 K. For higher temperatures, the abundance remains constant with a scatter of a factor of 3. The abundances of H13CO+, HC18O+, H13CN, and HNC are well correlated with each other, and all of them decrease with molecular hydrogen density, following the law n(H2)$^{-0.8\pm0.2}$. The abundances of S-bearing species also decrease with n(H2) at a rate of (S-bearing/H)gas n(H2)$^{-0.6\pm0.1}$. The abundances of molecules belonging to groups 2 and 3 do not present any clear trend with gas temperature. At scales of molecular clouds, the C18O abundance is the quantity that better correlates with the cloud mass. We discuss the utility of the 13CO/C18O, HCO+/H13CO+, and H13CO+/H13CN abundance ratios as chemical diagnostics of star formation in external galaxies., Comment: 28 pages, 22 figures. Context. Young and embedded stellar populations are important probes of the star formation process. Paradoxically, we have a better census of nearby embedded young populations than the slightly more evolved optically visible young populations. The high accuracy measurements and all-sky coverage of Gaia data are about to change this situation. Aims. This work aims to construct the most complete sample to date of YSOs in the $\rho$ Oph region. Methods. We compile a catalog of 1114 Ophiuchus YSOs from the literature and crossmatch it with the Gaia EDR3, Gaia-ESO and APOGEE-2 surveys. We apply a multivariate classification algorithm to this catalog to identify new, co-moving population candidates. Results. We find 191 new high-fidelity YSO candidates in the Gaia EDR3 catalog belonging to the $\rho$ Oph region. The new sources appear to be mainly Class III M-stars and substellar objects and are less extincted than the known members. We find 28 previously unknown sources with disks. The analysis of the proper motion distribution of the entire sample reveals a well-defined bimodality, implying two distinct populations sharing a similar 3D volume. The first population comprises young stars' clusters around the $\rho$ Ophiuchi star and the main Ophiuchus clouds (L1688, L1689, L1709). In contrast, the second population is older ($\sim$ 10 Myr), dispersed, has a distinct proper motion, and is possibly from the Upper Sco group. The two populations are moving away from each other at about 4.1 km/s, and will no longer overlap in about 4 Myr. Finally, we flag 17 sources in the literature as impostors, which are sources that exhibit large deviations from the average distance and proper motion properties of the $\rho$ Oph population. $Context.$ The traditional approach to characterize the structure of molecular clouds is to map their line emission. $Aims.$ We aim to test and apply a stratified random sampling technique that can characterize the line emission from molecular clouds more efficiently than mapping. $Methods.$ We sampled the molecular emission from the Perseus cloud using the H2 column density as a proxy. We divided the cloud into ten logarithmically spaced column density bins, and we randomly selected ten positions from each bin. The resulting 100 cloud positions were observed with the IRAM 30m telescope, covering the 3mm-wavelength band and parts of the 2 and 1mm bands. $Results.$ We focus our analysis on 11 molecular species detected toward most column density bins. In all cases, the line intensity is tightly correlated with the H2 column density. For the CO isotopologs, the trend is relatively flat, while for high-dipole moment species such as HCN, CS, and HCO+ the trend is approximately linear. We reproduce this behavior with a cloud model in which the gas density increases with column density, and where most species have abundance profiles characterized by an outer photodissociation edge and an inner freeze-out drop. The intensity behavior of the high-dipole moment species arises from a combination of excitation effects and molecular freeze out, with some modulation from optical depth. This quasi-linear dependence with the H2 column density makes the gas at low column densities dominate the cloud-integrated emission. It also makes the emission from most high-dipole moment species proportional to the cloud mass inside the photodissociation edge. $Conclusions.$ Stratified random sampling is an efficient technique for characterizing the emission from whole molecular clouds. CS is among the most abundant gas-phase S-bearing molecules in cold dark molecular clouds. It is easily observable with several transitions in the millimeter wavelength range, and has been widely used as a tracer of the gas density in the interstellar medium in our Galaxy and external galaxies. Chemical models fail to account for the observed CS abundances when assuming the cosmic value for the elemental abundance of sulfur. The CS+O -> CO + S reaction has been proposed as a relevant CS destruction mechanism at low temperatures, and could explain the discrepancy between models and observations. Its reaction rate has been experimentally measured at temperatures of 150-400 K, but the extrapolation to lower temperatures is doubtful. Here we calculate the CS+O reaction rate at temperatures <150 K which are prevailing in the interstellar medium. We performed ab initio calculations to obtain the three lowest PES of the CS+O system. These PESs are used to study the reaction dynamics, using several methods to eventually calculate the CS+O thermal reaction rates. We compare the results of our theoretical calculations for 150-400 K with those obtained in the laboratory. Our detailed theoretical study on the CS+O reaction, which is in agreement with the experimental data obtained at 150-400 K, demonstrates the reliability of our approach. After a careful analysis at lower temperatures, we find that the rate constant at 10 K is negligible, which is consistent with the extrapolation of experimental data using the Arrhenius expression. We use the updated chemical network to model the sulfur chemistry in TMC1 based on molecular abundances determined from GEMS project observations. In our model, we take into account the expected decrease of the cosmic ray ionization rate along the cloud. The spatial and dynamical structure of star-forming regions can help provide insights on stellar formation patterns. The amount of data from current and upcoming surveys calls for robust and objective procedures to detect structure, so the results can be statistically analysed and different regions compared. We provide the community with a tool able to detect the small scale significant structure, above random expectation, in star-forming regions, which could be the imprint of the stellar formation process. The tool makes use of the one point correlation function and of nearest neighbour statistics to determine the parameters for the DBSCAN algorithm. The procedure successfully detects significant small scale substructures in heterogeneous regions, fulfilling the goals it was designed for, and providing very reliable structures. The analysis of regions close to complete spatial randomness ($Q \in [0.7,0.87]$) shows that, even when some structure is present and recovered, it is hardly distinguishable from spurious detection in homogeneous regions due to projection effects. Interpretation should thus be done with care. For concentrated regions, we detect a main structure surrounded by smaller ones, corresponding to the core plus some Poisson fluctuations around it. We argue that these structures do not correspond to the small compact regions we are looking for. In some realistic cases, a more complete hierarchical, multi-scale analysis would be needed to capture the complexity of the region. We have developed implementations of our procedure, and a catalogue of the NESTs (Nested Elementary STructures) detected by it in four star-forming regions (Taurus, IC 348, Upper Scorpius, and Carina), which are publicly available to the community. Protoplanetary disk surveys by the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) are now probing a range of environmental conditions, from low-mass star-forming regions like Lupus to massive OB clusters like $\sigma$ Orionis. Here we conduct an ALMA survey of protoplanetary disks in $\lambda$ Orionis, a ~5 Myr old OB cluster in Orion, with dust mass sensitivities comparable to the surveys of nearby regions (~0.4 $M_\oplus$). We assess how massive OB stars impact planet formation, in particular from the supernova that may have occurred ~1 Myr ago in the core of $\lambda$ Orionis; studying these effects is important as most planetary systems, including our Solar System, are likely born in cluster environments. We find that the effects of massive stars, in the form of pre-supernova feedback and/or a supernova itself, do not appear to significantly reduce the available planet-forming material otherwise expected at the evolved age of $\lambda$ Orionis. We also compare a lingering massive "outlier" disk in $\lambda$ Orionis to similar systems in other evolved regions, hypothesizing that these outliers host companions in their inner disks that suppress disk dispersal to extend the lifetimes of their outer primordial disks. We conclude with numerous avenues for future work, highlighting how $\lambda$ Orionis still has much to teach us about perhaps one of the most common types of planet-forming environments in the Galaxy., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. Context. The star formation rates and stellar densities found in young massive clusters suggest that these stellar systems originate from gas at densities n(H$_2$) $>10^7$ cm$^{-3}$. Until today, however, the physical characterization of this ultra high density material remains largely unconstrained in observations. Aims. We investigated the density properties of the star-forming gas in the OMC-1 region located in the vicinity of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). Methods. We mapped the molecular emission at 652 GHz in OMC-1 as part of the APEX-SEPIA660 Early Science. Results. We detect bright and extended N$_2$H$^+$ (J=7-6) line emission along the entire OMC-1 region. Comparisons with previous ALMA data of the (J=1-0) transition and radiative transfer models indicate that the line intensities observed in this N$_2$H$^+$ (7-6) line are produced by large mass reservoirs of gas at densities n(H$_2$) $>10^7$ cm$^{-3}$. Conclusions. The first detection of this N$_2$H$^+$ (7-6) line at parsec-scales demonstrates the extreme density conditions of the star-forming gas in young massive clusters such as the ONC. Our results highlight the unique combination of sensitivity and mapping capabilities of the new SEPIA660 receiver for the study of the ISM properties at high frequencies., Comment: 8 pages, 5 Figures. Circumstellar discs are the precursors of planetary systems and develop shortly after their host star has formed. In their early stages these discs are immersed in an environment rich in gas and neighbouring stars, which can be hostile for their survival. There are several environmental processes that affect the evolution of circumstellar discs, and external photoevaporation is arguably one of the most important ones. Theoretical and observational evidence point to circumstellar discs losing mass quickly when in the vicinity of massive, bright stars. In this work we simulate circumstellar discs in clustered environments in a range of stellar densities, where the photoevaporation mass-loss process is resolved simultaneously with the stellar dynamics, stellar evolution, and the viscous evolution of the discs. Our results indicate that external photoevaporation is efficient in depleting disc masses and that the degree of its effect is related to stellar density. We find that a local stellar density lower than 100 stars pc$^{-2}$ is necessary for discs massive enough to form planets to survive for \SI{2.0}{Myr}. There is an order of magnitude difference in the disc masses in regions of projected density 100 stars pc$^{-2}$ versus $10^4$ stars pc$^{-2}$. We compare our results to observations of the Lupus clouds, the Orion Nebula Cluster, the Orion Molecular Cloud-2, Taurus, and NGC 2024, and find that the trends observed between region density and disc masses are similar to those in our simulations., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 9 pages, 4 figures

Strong winds and ultraviolet (UV) radiation from O-type stars disrupt and ionize their molecular core birthplaces, sweeping up material into parsec-size shells. Owing to dissociation by starlight, the thinnest shells are expected to host low molecular abundances and therefore little star formation. Here, we expand previous maps taken with the IRAM 30m telescope and present square-degree 12CO and 13CO (J=2-1) maps of the wind-driven "Veil bubble'' that surrounds the Trapezium cluster and its natal Orion molecular core (OMC). Although widespread and extended CO emission is largely absent from the Veil, we show that several CO "globules'' exist and are embedded in the [CII]158um-bright shell that confines the bubble. This includes the first detection of quiescent CO at negative LSR velocities in Orion. Given the harsh UV irradiation conditions in this translucent material, the detection of CO globules is surprising. These globules are small (R=7,100 AU), not massive (M=0.3M_Sun), and are moderately dense: n_ H=4x10^4 cm^-3 (median values). They are confined by the external pressure of the shell, P_ext/k~10^7 cm^-3 K, and are likely magnetically supported. They are either transient objects formed by instabilities or have detached from pre-existing molecular structures, sculpted by the passing shock associated with the expanding shell and by UV radiation from the Trapezium. Some represent the first stages in the formation of small pillars, others of isolated small globules. Although their masses do not suggest they will form stars, one globule matches the position of a known YSO. The lack of extended CO in the "Veil shell'' demonstrates that feedback from massive stars expels, agitates, and reprocesses most of the disrupted molecular cloud gas, thereby limiting the star-formation rate in the region. Sulphur is one of the most abundant elements in the Universe. Surprisingly, sulphuretted molecules are not as abundant as expected in the interstellar medium, and the identity of the main sulphur reservoir is still an open question. Our goal is to investigate the H$_{2}$S chemistry in dark clouds, as this stable molecule is a potential sulphur reservoir. Using millimeter observations of CS, SO, H$_{2}$S, and their isotopologues, we determine the physical conditions and H$_{2}$S abundances along the cores TMC 1-C, TMC 1-CP, and Barnard 1b. The gas-grain model Nautilus is then used to model the sulphur chemistry and explore the impact of photo-desorption and chemical desorption on the H$_2$S abundance. Our model shows that chemical desorption is the main source of gas-phase H$_2$S in dark cores. The measured H$_{2}$S abundance can only be fitted if we assume that the chemical desorption rate decreases by more than a factor of 10 when $n_{\rm H}>2\times10^{4}$. This change in the desorption rate is consistent with the formation of thick H$_2$O and CO ice mantles on grain surfaces. The observed SO and H$_2$S abundances are in good agreement with our predictions adopting an undepleted value of the sulphur abundance. However, the CS abundance is overestimated by a factor of $5-10$. Along the three cores, atomic S is predicted to be the main sulphur reservoir. We conclude that the gaseous H$_2$S abundance is well reproduced, assuming undepleted sulphur abundance and chemical desorption as the main source of H$_2$S. The behavior of the observed H$_{2}$S abundance suggests a changing desorption efficiency, which would probe the snowline in these cores. Our model, however, overestimates the observed gas-phase CS abundance. Given the uncertainty in the sulphur chemistry, our data are consistent with a cosmic elemental S abundance with an uncertainty of a factor of 10., Comment: 23 pages, 16 figures

Aims. To demonstrate that `INDICATE' is a powerful spatial analysis tool which when combined with kinematic data from Gaia DR2 can be used to robustly probe star formation history. Methods. We compared the dynamic & spatial distributions of young stellar objects (YSOs) at various evolutionary stages in NGC 2264 using Gaia DR2 proper motion data and INDICATE. Results. The dynamic & spatial behaviours of YSOs at different evolutionary stages are distinct. Dynamically, Class II YSOs predominately have non-random trajectories that are consistent with known substructures, whereas Class III YSOs have random trajectories with no clear expansion or contraction patterns. Spatially, there is a correlation between the evolutionary stage and source concentration: 69.4% of Class 0/I, 27.9% of Class II, and 7.7% of Class III objects are found to be clustered. The proportion of YSOs clustered with objects of the same class also follows this trend. Class 0/I objects are both found to be more tightly clustered with the general populous/objects of the same class than Class IIs and IIIs by a factor of 1.2/4.1 and 1.9/6.6, respectively. An exception to these findings is within 0.05deg of S Mon where Class III objects mimic the behaviours of Class II sources across the wider cluster region. Our results suggest (i) current YSOs distributions are a result of dynamical evolution, (ii) prolonged star formation has been occurring sequentially, and (iii) stellar feedback from S Mon is causing YSOs to appear as more evolved sources. Conclusions. Designed to provide a quantitative measure of clustering behaviours, INDICATE is a powerful tool with which to perform rigorous spatial analyses. Context. The gas kinetic temperature (TK) determines the physical and chemical evolution of the Interestellar Medium (ISM). However, obtaining reliable TK estimates usually requires expensive observations including the combination of multi-line analysis and dedicated radiative transfer calculations. Aims. This work explores the use of HCN and HNC observations, and particularly its I(HCN)/I(HNC) intensity ratio of their J=1-0 lines, as direct probe of the gas kinetic temperature in the molecular ISM. Methods. We obtained a new set of large-scale observations of both HCN and HNC (1-0) lines along the Integral Shape Filament (ISF) in Orion. In combination with ancillary gas and dust temperature measurements, we find a systematic temperature dependence of the observed I(HCN)/I(HNC) intensity ratio across our maps. Additional comparisons with chemical models demonstrate that these observed I(HCN)/I(HNC) variations are driven by the effective destruction and isomerization mechanisms of HNC under low energy barriers. Results. The observed variations of I(HCN)/I(HNC) with TK can be described with a two-part linear function. This empirical calibration is then used to create a temperature map of the entire ISF. Comparisons with similar dust temperature measurements in this cloud, as well as in other regions and galactic surveys, validate this simple technique to obtain direct estimates of the gas kinetic temperature in a wide range of physical conditions and scales with an optimal working range between 15 K and 40 K. Conclusions. Both observations and models demonstrate the strong sensitivity of the I(HCN)/I(HNC) ratio to the gas kinetic temperature. Protoplanetary discs (PPDs) in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) are irradiated by UV fields from the massive star $\theta^1$C. This drives thermal winds, inducing mass loss rates of up to $\dot{M}_\mathrm{wind}\sim 10^{-7}\,M_\odot$/yr in the `proplyds' (ionised PPDs) close to the centre. For the mean age of the ONC and reasonable initial PPD masses, such mass loss rates imply that discs should have been dispersed. However, ~80% of stars still exhibit a NIR excess, suggesting that significant circumstellar mass remains. This `proplyd lifetime problem' has persisted since the discovery of photoevaporating discs in the core of the ONC by O'Dell & Wen (1994). In this work, we demonstrate how an extended period of star formation can solve this problem. Coupling N-body calculations and a viscous disc evolution model, we obtain high disc fractions at the present day. This is partly due to the migration of older stars outwards, and younger stars inwards such that the most strongly irradiated PPDs are also the youngest. We show how the disc mass distribution can be used to test the recent claims in the literature for multiple stellar populations in the ONC. Our model also explains the recent finding that host mass and PPD mass are only weakly correlated, in contrast with other regions of similar age. We conclude that the status of the ONC as the archetype for understanding the influence of environment on planet formation is undeserved; the complex star formation history (involving star formation episodes within ~0.8 Myr of the present day) results in confusing signatures in the PPD population., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The mass evolution of protoplanetary disks is driven by both internal processes and external factors, such as photoevaporation. Disentangling these two effects, however, has remained difficult. We measure the dust masses of a sample of 132 disks in the Orion Molecular Cloud (OMC)-2 region, and compare them to (i) externally photoevaporated disks in the Trapezium cluster, and (ii) disks in nearby low-mass star forming regions (SFRs). This allows us to test if initial disk properties are the same in high- and low-mass SFRs, and enables a direct measurement of the effect of external photoevaporation on disks. A ~ $20' \times 4'$ mosaic of 3 mm continuum observations from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) was used to measure the fluxes of 132 disks and 35 protostars >0.5 pc away from the Trapezium. We identify and characterize a sample of 34 point sources not included in the Spitzer catalog on which the sample is based. Of the disks, 37 (28%) are detected, with masses ranging from 7-270 M_e. The detection rate for protostars is higher at 69%. Disks near the Trapezium are found to be less massive by a factor $0.18^{+0.18}_{-0.11}$, implying a mass loss rate of $8\times10^{-8}$ M_sun/yr. Our observations allow us to distinguish the impact of time and environment on disk evolution in a single SFR. The disk mass distribution in OMC-2 is statistically indistinguishable from that in nearby low-mass SFRs, like Lupus and Taurus. We conclude that age is the main factor determining the evolution of these disks. This result is robust with respect to assumptions of dust temperature, sample incompleteness and biases. The difference between the OMC-2 and Trapezium cluster samples is consistent with mass loss driven by far-ultraviolet radiation near the Trapezium. The past two decades have seen extensive surveys of the far-infrared to submillimeter continuum emission in the plane of our Galaxy. We line out prospects for the coming decade for corresponding molecular and atomic line surveys which are needed to fully understand the formation of the dense structures that give birth to clusters and stars out of the diffuse interstellar medium. We propose to work towards Galaxy wide surveys in mid-J CO lines to trace shocks from colliding clouds, Galaxy-wide surveys for atomic Carbon lines in order to get a detailed understanding of the relation of atomic and molecular gas in clouds, and to perform extensive surveys of the structure of the dense parts of molecular clouds to understand the importance of filaments/fibers over the full range of Galactic environments and to study how dense cloud cores are formed from the filaments. Recent observations of lensed sources have shown that the faintest ($M_{\mathrm{UV}} \approx -15\,\mathrm{mag}$) galaxies observed at z=6-8 appear to be extremely compact. Some of them have inferred sizes of less than 40 pc for stellar masses between $10^6$ and $10^7\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$, comparable to individual super star clusters or star cluster complexes at low redshift. High-redshift, low-mass galaxies are expected to show a clumpy, irregular morphology and if star clusters form in each of these well-separated clumps, the observed galaxy size would be much larger than the size of an individual star forming region. As supernova explosions impact the galaxy with a minimum delay time that exceeds the time required to form a massive star cluster, other processes are required to explain the absence of additional massive star forming regions. In this work we investigate whether the radiation of a young massive star cluster can suppress the formation of other detectable clusters within the same galaxy already before supernova feedback can affect the galaxy. We find that in low-mass ($M_{200} \lesssim 10^{10}\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$) haloes, the radiation from a compact star forming region with an initial mass of $10^{7}\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ can keep gas clumps with Jeans masses larger than $\approx 10^{7}\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ warm and ionized throughout the galaxy. In this picture, the small intrinsic sizes measured in the faintest $z=6-8$ galaxies are a natural consequence of the strong radiation field that stabilises massive gas clumps. The binary T Tauri system JW 566 in the Orion Molecular Cloud underwent an energetic, short-lived flare observed at submillimetre wavelengths by the SCUBA-2 instrument on 26 November 2016 (UT). The emission faded by nearly 50% during the 31 minute integration. The simultaneous source fluxes averaged over the observation are 500 +/- 107 mJy/beam at 450 microns and 466 +/- 47 mJy/beam at 850 microns. The 850 micron flux corresponds to a radio luminosity of $L_{\nu}=8\times10^{19}$ erg/s/Hz, approximately one order of magnitude brighter (in terms of $\nu L_{\nu}$) than that of a flare of the young star GMR-A, detected in Orion in 2003 at 3mm. The event may be the most luminous known flare associated with a young stellar object and is also the first coronal flare discovered at sub-mm wavelengths. The spectral index between 450 microns and 850 microns of $\alpha = 0.11$ is broadly consistent with non-thermal emission. The brightness temperature was in excess of $6\times10^{4}$ K. We have extended and refined the existing young stellar object (YSO) catalogs for the Orion A molecular cloud, the closest massive star-forming region to Earth. This updated catalog is driven by the large spatial coverage (18.3 deg$^2$, $\sim$950 pc$^2$), seeing limited resolution ($\sim$0.7$"$), and sensitivity ($K_s<19$ mag) of the ESO-VISTA near-infrared survey of the Orion A cloud (VISION). Combined with archival mid- to far-infrared data, the VISTA data allow for a refined and more robust source selection. We estimate that among previously known protostars and pre-main-sequence stars with disks, source contamination levels (false positives) are at least $\sim$6.4% and $\sim$2.3%, respectively, mostly due to background galaxies and nebulosities. We identify 274 new YSO candidates using VISTA/Spitzer based selections within previously analyzed regions, and VISTA/WISE based selections to add sources in the surroundings, beyond previously analyzed regions. The WISE selection method recovers about 59% of the known YSOs in Orion A's low-mass star-forming part L1641, which shows what can be achieved by the all-sky WISE survey in combination with deep near-infrared data in regions without the influence of massive stars. The new catalog contains 2980 YSOs, which were classified based on the de-reddened mid-infrared spectral index into 188 protostars, 185 flat-spectrum sources, and 2607 pre-main-sequence stars with circumstellar disks. We find a statistically significant difference in the spatial distribution of the three evolutionary classes with respect to regions of high dust column-density, confirming that flat-spectrum sources are at a younger evolutionary phase compared to Class IIs, and are not a sub-sample seen at particular viewing angles., Comment: 39 pages, 25 figures, Accepted for publication by A&A

GEMS is an IRAM 30m Large Program whose aim is determining the elemental depletions and the ionization fraction in a set of prototypical star-forming regions. This paper presents the first results from the prototypical dark cloud TMC 1. Extensive millimeter observations have been carried out with the IRAM 30m telescope (3mm and 2mm) and the 40m Yebes telescope (1.3cm and 7mm) to determine the fractional abundances of CO, HCO+, HCN, CS, SO, HCS+, and N2H+ in three cuts which intersect the dense filament at the well-known positions TMC 1-CP, TMC 1-NH3, and TMC 1-C, covering a visual extinction range from Av~3 to ~20mag. Two phases with differentiated chemistry can be distinguished: i) the translucent envelope with molecular hydrogen densities of (1-5)x10$^3$ cm$^{-3}$; and ii) the dense phase, located at Av>10mag, with molecular hydrogen densities >10$^4$ cm$^{-3}$. Observations and modeling show that the gas phase abundances of C and O progressively decrease along the C+/C/CO transition zone where C/H~8x10$^{-5}$ and C/O~0.8-1, until the beginning of the dense phase at Av~10 mag. This is consistent with the grain temperatures being below the CO evaporation temperature in this region. In the case of sulfur, a strong depletion should occur before the translucent phase where we estimate a S/H~(0.4 - 2.2) x10$^{-6}$, an abundance ~7-40 times lower than the solar value. A second strong depletion must be present during the formation of the thick icy mantles to achieve the values of S/H measured in the dense cold cores (S/H~8x10$^{-8}$).
