Search

The National Science Foundation (NSF) funded National Research Platform (NRP) is a hyper-converged cluster of nationally and globally interconnected heterogeneous computing resources. The dominant computing environment of the NRP is the x86 64 instruction set architecture (ISA), often with graphics processing units (GPUs). Researchers across the nation leverage containers and Kubernetes to execute high-throughput computing (HTC) workloads across the heterogeneous cyberinfrastructure with minimal friction and maximum flexibility. As part of the NSF-funded GP-ENGINE project, we stood up the first server with an NVIDIA Grace Hopper AI Chip (GH200), an alternative ARM ISA, for the NRP. This presents challenges, as containers must be specifically built for ARM versus x86 64. Herein, we describe the challenges encountered, as well as our resulting solutions and some relevant performance benchmarks. We specifically compare the GH200 to A100 for computer vision workloads, within compute nodes in the NRP.

A material showing a sequence of three ferroelectric liquid crystalline phases below the paraelectric nematic phase has been synthesized and studied. The polar order of molecules appearing due to the dipole-dipole interactions in the NF phase is preserved also in the smectic phases: orthogonal SmAF and tilted SmCF. The ferroelectric ground state of both smectic phases is confirmed by their second harmonic generation activity and polarization switching. In the SmCF phase the polarization becomes oriented to the electric field by decreasing the tilt angle to zero. Although both smectic phases are ferroelectric in nature, their dielectric response is found to be very different.

The partcle-induced hadronic de-excitation of the Hoyle state in $^{12}$C induced by inelastic scattering in a hot and dense plasma can enhance the triple-alpha reaction rate. This prevents the production of heavy nuclei within the neutrino-driven winds of core-collapse supernovae and raises a question as to the contribution of proton-rich neutrino-driven winds as the origin of $p$-nuclei in the solar system abundances. Here we study $\nu p$-process nucleosynthesis in proton-rich neutrino-driven winds relevant to the production of $^{92,94}\mathrm{Mo}$ and $^{96,98}\mathrm{Ru}$ by considering such particle-induced de-excitation. We show that the enhancement of the triple-alpha reaction rate induced by neutron inelastic scattering hardly affects the $\nu p$-process, while the proton scattering contributes to the nucleosynthesis in proton-rich neutrino-driven winds at low temperature. The associated enhanced triple-alpha reaction rate decreases the production of $^{92,94}\mathrm{Mo}$ and $^{96,98}\mathrm{Ru}$ in a wind model of ordinary core-collapse supernovae. On the other hand, the abundances of these $p$-nuclei increase in an energetic hypernova wind model. Hence, we calculate the galactic chemical evolution of $^{92,94}\mathrm{Mo}$ and $^{96,98}\mathrm{Ru}$ by taking account of both contributions from core-collapse supernovae and hypernovae. We show that the hypernova $\nu p$-process can enhance the calculated solar isotopic fractions of $^{92,94}\mathrm{Mo}$ and $^{96,98}\mathrm{Ru}$ and make a significant impact on the GCE of $p$-nuclei regardless of the particle-induced Hoyle state de-excitation., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

We analyze the spectrum of gravitational waves generated by the induced spectrum of tensor fluctuation during warm natural inflation. In our previous work it has been demonstrated that an epoch of warm natural inflation can lead to cosmologically relevant dark matter production in the form of primordial black holes. Here we show that models which solve the dark-matter production also produce a contribution to the cosmic gravitational wave background that satisfies current constraints from pulsar timing and big bang nucleosynthesis. More importantly, this gravitational wave background may be observable in the next generation of space-based and ground-based gravitational wave interferometers., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

As neutron stars merge they can approach very high nuclear density. Here, we summarized recent results for the evolution and gravitational wave emission from binary neutron star mergers using a a variety of nuclear equations of state with and without a crossover transition to quark matter. The dynamics of the satellite systems of Milky-Way-like galaxies offer a useful means by which to study the galaxy formation process in the cosmological context. It has been suggested that the currently observed anisotropic distribution of the satellites in such galaxy systems is inconsistent with the concordance $\Lambda CDM$ cosmology model on the galactic scale if the observed satellites are random samples of the dark matter (DM) sub-halos that are nearly isotropically distributed around the central galaxy. In this study, we present original high-resolution zoom-in studies of central galaxies and satellite systems based upon initial conditions for the DM distribution from the Aquarius simulations but with substantial high-resolution baryon physics added. We find that the galaxy most like the Milky Way in this study does indeed contain a disk of satellites (DOS). Although one galaxy DOS system does not answer the question of how common such disks are, it does allow the opportunity to explore the properties and dynamics of the DOS system. Our investigation centers on the spatial arrangement (distances, angles, etc.) of satellites in this Milky-Way-like galaxy system with a specific emphasis on identifying and analyzing the disk-like structure along with its dynamical and morphological properties. Among the conclusions from this study, we find that the satellites and DM sub-halos in the galaxy simulations are anisotropically distributed. The dynamical properties of the satellites, however, indicate that the direction of the angular momentum vector of the whole satellite system is different from the normal direction of the fitted DOS and from the normal direction of the velocity dispersion of the system. Hence, the fitted DOS appears to be comprised of infalling sub-halos and is not a rotationally supported system., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures

We report on a study of the natural warm inflationary paradigm (WNI). We show two important new results arise in this model. One is that the observational constraints on the primordial power spectrum from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) can be satisfied without going beyond the Planck scale of the effective field theory. The second is that WNI can inevitably provide perfect conditions for the production of primordial black holes (PBHs) in the golden window of black-hole mass range ($10^{-16} -10^{-11}M_{\odot}$) where it can account for all of the the dark matter content of the universe while satisfying observational constraints., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, Minor corrections added. We present a simple criterion to predict the explodability of massive stars based on the density and entropy profiles before collapse. If a pronounced density jump is present near the Si/Si-O interface, the star will likely explode. We develop a quantitative criterion by using $\sim 1300$ 1D simulations where $\nu$-driven turbulence is included via time-dependent mixing-length theory. This criterion correctly identifies the outcome of the supernova more than $90 \%$ of the time. We also find no difference in how this criterion performs on two different sets of progenitors, evolved using two different stellar evolution codes: FRANEC and KEPLER. The explodability as a function of mass of the two sets of progenitors is very different, showing: (i) that uncertainties in the stellar evolution prescriptions influence the predictions of supernova explosions; (ii) the most important properties of the pre-collapse progenitor that influence the explodability are its density and entropy profiles. We investigate the neutrino flavor change effects due to neutrino self-interaction, shock wave propagation as well as matter effect on the neutrino-process of the core-collapsing supernova (CCSN). For the hydrodynamics, we use two models: a simple thermal bomb model and a specified hydrodynamic model for SN1987A. As a pre-supernova model, we take an updated model adjusted to explain the SN1987A employing recent development of the $(n,\gamma)$ reaction rates for nuclei near the stability line $(A \sim 100)$. As for the neutrino luminosity, we adopt two different models: equivalent neutrino luminosity and non-equivalent luminosity models. The latter is taken from the synthetic analyses of the CCSN simulation data which involved quantitatively the results obtained by various neutrino transport models. Relevant neutrino-induced reaction rates are calculated by a shell model for light nuclei and a quasi-particle random phase approximation model for heavy nuclei. For each model, we present abundances of the light nuclei ($^7$Li, $^7$Be, $^{11}$B and $^{11}$C) and heavy nuclei ($^{92}$Nb, $^{98}$Tc, $^{138}$La and $^{180}$Ta) produced by the neutrino-process. The light nuclei abundances turn out to be sensitive to the Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein (MSW) region around O-Ne-Mg region while the heavy nuclei are mainly produced prior to the MSW region. Through the detailed analyses, we find that neutrino self-interaction becomes a key ingredient in addition to the MSW effect for understanding the neutrino-process and the relevant nuclear abundances. The normal mass hierarchy is shown to be more compatible with the meteorite data. Main nuclear reactions for each nucleus are also investigated in detail.

It is anticipated that the gravitational radiation detected in future gravitational wave (GW) detectors from binary neutron star (NS) mergers can probe the high-density equation of state (EOS). We perform the first simulations of binary NS mergers which adopt various parametrizations of the quark-hadron crossover (QHC) EOS. These are constructed from combinations of a hadronic EOS ($n_{b} < 2~n_0$) and a quark-matter EOS ($n_{b} >~5~n_0$), where $n_{b}$ and $n_0$ are the baryon number density and the nuclear saturation density, respectively. At the crossover densities ($2~ n_0 < n_{b} < 5~ n_0$) the QHC EOSs continuously soften, while remaining stiffer than hadronic and first-order phase transition EOSs, achieving the stiffness of strongly correlated quark matter. This enhanced stiffness leads to significantly longer lifetimes of the postmerger NS than that for a pure hadronic EOS. We find a dual nature of these EOSs such that their maximum chirp GW frequencies $f_{max}$ fall into the category of a soft EOS while the dominant peak frequencies ($f_{peak}$) of the postmerger stage fall in between that of a soft and stiff hadronic EOS. An observation of this kind of dual nature in the characteristic GW frequencies will provide crucial evidence for the existence of strongly interacting quark matter at the crossover densities for QCD., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

The amplitude of the primordial magnetic field (PMF) is constrained from observational limits on primordial nuclear abundances. Within this constraint, it is possible that nuclear motion is regulated by Coulomb scattering with electrons and positrons ($e^\pm$'s), while $e^\pm$'s are affected by a PMF rather than collisions. For example, at a temperature of $10^9$ K, thermal nuclei typically experience $\sim 10^{21}$ scatterings per second that are dominated by very small angle scattering leading to minuscule changes in the nuclear kinetic energy of order $\mathcal{O}$(1) eV. In this paper the upper limit on the effects of a possible discretization of the $e^\pm$ momenta by the PMF on the nuclear momentum distribution is estimated under the extreme assumptions that the momentum of the $e^\pm$ is relaxed before and after Coulomb scattering to Landau levels, and that during Coulomb scattering the PMF is neglected. This assumption explicitly breaks the time reversal invariance of Coulomb scattering, and the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution is not a trivial steady state solution of the Boltzmann equation under these assumptions. We numerically evaluate the collision terms in the Boltzmann equation, and show that the introduction of a special direction in the $e^\pm$ distribution by the PMF generates no directional dependence of the collisional destruction term of nuclei. Large anisotropies in the nuclear distribution function are then constrained from big bang nucleosynthesis. The nuclear equation of state is an important component in the evolution of core collapse supernovae. In this paper we make a survey of various equations of state in the literature and analyze their effect on spherical core-collapse models in which the effects of three-dimensional turbulence is modeled by a general relativistic formulation of Supernova Turbulence in Reduced dimensionality (STIR). We show that the viability of the explosion is quite EOS dependent and that it best correlates with the early-time interior entropy density of the proto-neutron star. We check that this result is not progenitor dependent, although low-mass progenitors show different explosion properties, due to the different pre-collapse nuclear composition. Larger central entropies also induce more vigorous proto-neutron-star convection in our one-dimensional turbulence model, as well as a wider convective layer., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

We calculate Galactic Chemical Evolution (GCE) of Mo and Ru by taking into account the contribution from $\nu p$-process nucleosynthesis. We estimate yields of $p$-nuclei such as $^{92,94}\mathrm{Mo}$ and $^{96,98}\mathrm{Ru}$ through the $\nu p$-process in various supernova (SN) progenitors based upon recent models. In particular, the $\nu p$-process in energetic hypernovae produces a large amount of $p$-nuclei compared to the yield in ordinary core-collapse SNe. Because of this the abundances of $^{92,94}\mathrm{Mo}$ and $^{96,98}\mathrm{Ru}$ in the Galaxy are significantly enhanced at [Fe/H]=0 by the $\nu p$-process. We find that the $\nu p$-process in hypernovae is the main contributor to the elemental abundance of $^{92}$Mo at low metallicity [Fe/H$]<-2$. Our theoretical prediction of the elemental abundances in metal-poor stars becomes more consistent with observational data when the $\nu p$-process in hypernovae is taken into account., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The first detection of gravitational waves from the binary neutron star merger GW170817 by the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration has provided fundamental new insights into the astrophysical site for r-process nucleosynthesis and on the nature of dense neutron-star matter. The detected gravitational wave signal depends upon the tidal distortion of the neutron stars as they approach merger. We report on relativistic numerical simulations of the approach to binary merger in the conformally flat, quasi-circular orbit approximation. We show that this event serves as a calibration to the quasi-circular approximation and a confirmation of the validity of the conformally flat approximation to the three-metric. We then examine how the detected chirp depends upon the adopted equation of state. This establishes a new efficient means to constrain the nuclear equation of state in binary neutron star mergers., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure

We study neutrino and antineutrino emission from the direct Urca process in neutron-star matter in the presence of strong magnetic fields. We calculate the neutrino emissivity of the direct Urca process, whereby a neutron converts to a proton, an electron and an antineutrino, or a proton-electron pair converts to a neutron-neutrino pair. We solve exact wave functions for protons and electrons in the states described with Landau levels. We find that the direct Urca process can satisfy the kinematic constraints even in density regions where this process could not normally occur in the absence of a magnetic field., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

Convection and turbulence in core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) are inherently three-dimensional in nature. However, 3D simulations of CCSNe are computationally demanding. Thus, it is valuable to modify simulations in spherical symmetry to incorporate 3D effects using some parametric model. In this paper, we report on the formulation and implementation of general relativistic (GR) neutrino-driven turbulent convection in the spherically symmetric core-collapse supernova code \texttt{GR1D}. This is based upon the recently proposed method of Supernova Turbulence in Reduced-dimensionality (\textit{STIR}) in Newtonian simulations from \cite{Couch2020_STIR}. When the parameters of this model are calibrated to 3D simulations, we find that our GR formulation of \textit{STIR} requires larger turbulent eddies to achieve a shock evolution similar to the original \textit{STIR} model. We study the evolution of rapid neutron-capture process (r-process) isotopes in the Galaxy. We analyze relative contributions from core collapse supernovae (CCSNe), neutron star mergers (NSMs) and collapsars under a range of astrophysical conditions and nuclear input data. Although the r-process in each of these sites can lead to similar (or differing) isotopic abundances, our simulations reveal that the early contribution of r-process material to the Galaxy was dominated by CCSNe and collapsar r-process nucleosynthesis, while the NSM contribution is unavoidably delayed even under the assumption of the shortest possible minimum merger time.

The core-cusp problem remains as a challenging discrepancy between observations and simulations in the standard $\Lambda$CDM model for the formation of galaxies. The problem is that $\Lambda$CDM simulations predict a steep power-law mass density profile at the center of galactic dark matter halos. However, observations of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group reveal a density profile consistent with a nearly flat distribution of dark matter near the center. A number of solutions to this dilemma have been proposed. Here, we summarize investigations into the possibility that the dark matter particles themselves self interact and scatter. Such self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) particles can smooth out the dark-matter profile in high-density regions. We also review the theoretical proposal that self-interacting dark matter may arise as an additional Higgs scalar in the 3-3-1 extension of the standard model. We present new simulations of galaxy formation and evolution for this formulation of self-interacting dark matter. Multicomponent relativistic fluids have been studied for decades. However, simulating the dynamics of the particles and fluids in such a mixture has been a challenge due to the fact that such simulations are computationally expensive in three spatial dimensions. Here, we report on the development and application of a multi dimensional relativistic Monte Carlo code to explore of the thermalization process in a relativistic multicomponent environment in a computationally inexpensive way. As an illustration we simulate the fully relativistic three dimensional Brownian-motion-like solution to the thermalization of a high mass particle (proton) in a bath of relativistic low-mass particles (electrons). We follow the thermalization and ultimate equilibrium distribution of the Brownian-like particle as can happen in the cosmic plasma during big bang nucleosynthesis. We also simulate the thermalization of energetic particles injected into the plasma as can occur, for example, by the decay of massive unstable particles during the big bang.

Here we demonstrate how Deep Neural Network (DNN) detections of multiple constitutive or component objects that are part of a larger, more complex, and encompassing feature can be spatially fused to improve the search, detection, and retrieval (ranking) of the larger complex feature. First, scores computed from a spatial clustering algorithm are normalized to a reference space so that they are independent of image resolution and DNN input chip size. Then, multi-scale DNN detections from various component objects are fused to improve the detection and retrieval of DNN detections of a larger complex feature. We demonstrate the utility of this approach for broad area search and detection of Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) sites that have a very low occurrence rate (only 16 sites) over a ~90,000 km^2 study area in SE China. The results demonstrate that spatial fusion of multi-scale component-object DNN detections can reduce the detection error rate of SAM Sites by $>$85% while still maintaining a 100% recall. Elastic moduli of liquid crystals, known as Frank constants, are of quintessential importance for understanding fundamental properties of these materials and for the design of their applications. Although there are many methods to measure the Frank constants in the nematic phase, little is known about the elastic constants of the chiral version of the nematic, the so-called cholesteric liquid crystal, since the helicoidal structure of the cholesteric renders these methods inadequate. Here we present a technique to measure the bend modulus $K_{33}$ of cholesterics that is based on the electrically tunable reflection of light at an oblique helicoidal $Ch_{OH}$ cholesteric structure. $K_{33}$ is typically smaller than 0.6 pN, showing a non-monotonous temperature dependence with a slight increase near the transition to the twist-bend phase. $K_{33}$ depends strongly on the molecular composition. In particular, chiral mixtures that contain the flexible dimer 1'',7''-bis(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-yl) heptane (CB7CB) and rod-like molecules such as pentylcyanobiphenyl (5CB) show a $K_{33}$ value that is 5 times smaller than $K_{33}$ of pure CB7CB or of mixtures of CB7CB with chiral dopants. Furthermore, $K_{33}$ in CB11CB doped with a chiral agent is noticeably smaller than $K_{33}$ in a similarly doped CB7CB which is explained by the longer flexible link in CB11CB. The proposed technique allows a direct in-situ determination of how the molecular composition, molecular structure and molecular chirality affect the elastic properties of chiral liquid crystals., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures

We study the neutrino anti-neutrino pair synchrotron emission from electrons and protons in a relativistic quantum approach. This process occurs only under a strong magnetic field, and it is considered to be one of effective processes for neutron star cooling. In this work we calculate the luminosity of the neutrino anti-neutrino pairs emitted from neutron-star-matter with a magnetic field of about 10^{15} G. We find that the energy loss is much larger than that of the modified Urca process. Big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) is valuable as a means to constrain the physics of the early universe and it is the only probe of the radiation-dominated epoch. A fundamental assumption in BBN is that the nuclear velocity distributions obey Maxwell-Boltzmann (MB) statistics as they do in stars. Specifically, the BBN epoch is characterized by a dilute baryon plasma for which the velocity distribution of nuclei is mainly determined by the dominant Coulomb elastic scattering with mildly relativistic electrons. One must therefore deduce the momentum distribution for reacting nuclei from the multi-component relativistic Boltzmann equation. However, the full multi-component relativistic Boltzmann equation has only recently been analyzed and its solution has only been worked out in special cases. Moreover, a variety of schemes have been proposed that introduce non-thermal components into the BBN environment which can alter the thermal distribution of reacting nuclei. Here, we construct the relativistic Boltzmann equation in the context of BBN. We also derive a Langevin model and perform relativistic Monte-Carlo simulations which clarify the baryon distribution during BBN and can be used to analyze any relaxation from a non-thermal injection. We show by these analyses that the thermalization process leads to a nuclear distribution function that remains very close to MB statistics even during the most relativistic environment relevant to BBN. The neutrino process ($\nu$-process) for the production of 7Li and 11B in core-collapse supernovae (SNe) is extensively investigated. Initial abundances of s-nuclei and other physical conditions are derived from an updated calculation of the SN 1987A progenitor. The nuclear reaction network including neutrino reactions is constructed with the variable order Bader-Deuflhard integration method. We find that yields of 7Li and 11B significantly depend on the stellar metallicity while they are independent of the weak s-process during the stellar evolution. When the metallicity is high, there are more neutron absorbers, i.e., 56Fe, 14N (from initial CNO nuclei), and 54Fe, and the neutron abundance is small during the $\nu$-process. Since 7Be is predominantly destroyed via 7Be(n,p)7Li, a change in the neutron abundance results in different 7Be yields. Then, the calculated yield ratio 7Li/11B=0.93 for the solar metallicity is larger than that for the SN 1987A 7Li/11B=0.80 by 16 % in the inverted mass hierarchy case. Superpixel-based methodologies have become increasingly popular in computer vision, especially when the computation is too expensive in time or memory to perform with a large number of pixels or features. However, rarely is superpixel segmentation examined within the context of deep convolutional neural network architectures. This paper presents a novel neural architecture that exploits the superpixel feature space. The visual feature space is organized using superpixels to provide the neural network with a substructure of the images. As the superpixels associate the visual feature space with parts of the objects in an image, the visual feature space is transformed into a structured vector representation per superpixel. It is shown that it is feasible to learn superpixel features using capsules and it is potentially beneficial to perform image analysis in such a structured manner. This novel deep learning architecture is examined in the context of an image classification task, highlighting explicit interpretability (explainability) of the network's decision making. The results are compared against a baseline deep neural model, as well as among superpixel capsule networks with a variety of hyperparameter settings.

We review the computation of and associated uncertainties in the current understanding of the relic neutrino background due to core-collapse supernovae, black hole formation and neutron-star merger events. We consider the current status of uncertainties due to the nuclear equation of state (EoS), the progenitor masses, the source supernova neutrino spectrum, the cosmological star formation rate, the stellar initial mass function, neutrino oscillations, and neutrino self-interactions. We calculate the abundances of $^{7}$Li, $^{11}$B, $^{92}$Nb, $^{98}$Tc, $^{138}$La, and $^{180}$Ta produced by neutrino $(\nu)$ induced reactions in a core-collapse supernova explosion. We consider the modification by $\nu$ self-interaction ($\nu$-SI) near the neutrinosphere and the Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein effect in outer layers for time-dependent neutrino energy spectra. Abundances of $^{7}$Li and heavy isotopes $^{92}$Nb, $^{98}$Tc and $^{138}$La are reduced by a factor of 1.5-2.0 by the $\nu$-SI. In contrast, $^{11}$B is relatively insensitive to the $\nu$-SI. We find that the abundance ratio of heavy to light nucleus, $^{138}$La/$^{11}$B, is sensitive to the neutrino mass hierarchy, and the normal mass hierarchy is more likely to be consistent with the solar abundances.

The light elements up to 7Li were produced by the Standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis (SBBN) in the early universe assuming standard conditions. All observed primordial abundances of these light elements match very well the predicted ones by this SBBN except for 7Li which seems to be overproduced. It is rather challenging to resolve this discrepancy owing to the diverse possibilities affecting the abundance of lithium. In the present work we focus on non-standard possible solutions such as variation of chemical potential and the neutrino temperatures. In addition, the effect of dark matter is also analysed. We find that including these non-standard assumptions helps to reduce the abundance of lithium as predicted by SBBN. We suggest that this could be a possible step toward resolving the lithium problem.

We reinvestigate effects of neutrino oscillations on the production of 7Li and 11B in core-collapse supernovae (SNe). During the propagation of neutrinos from the proto-neutron star, their flavors change and the neutrino reaction rates for spallation of 12C and 4He are affected. In this work corrected neutrino spallation cross sections for 4He and 12C are adopted. Initial abundances involving heavy s-nuclei and other physical conditions are derived in a new calculation of the SN 1987A progenitor in which effects of the progenitor metallicity are included. A dependence of the SN nucleosynthesis and final yields of 7Li and 11B on the neutrino mass hierarchy are shown in several stellar locations. In the normal hierarchy case, the charged current reaction rates of electron neutrinos are enhanced, and yields of proton-rich nuclei, along with 7Be and 11C, are increased. In the inverted hierarchy case, the charged current reaction rates of electron antineutrinos are enhanced, and yields of neutron-rich nuclei, along with 7Li and 11B, are increased. We find that variation of the metallicity modifies the yields of 7Li, 7Be, 11B, and 11C. This effect is caused by changes in the neutron abundance during SN nucleosynthesis. We present new simulations of the flux power spectrum of the Lyman $\alpha$ forest as a means to investigate the effects of time-dependent dark energy on structure formation. We use a linearized parameterization of the time-dependence of the dark energy equation of state and sample the parameters ($w_0,w_a$) from the the extrema of the allowed observational values as determined by the Planck results. Each chosen ($w_0,w_a$) pair is then used in a high-resolution, large-scale cosmological simulation run with a modified version of the publicly available SPH code {\tt GADGET-2}. From each of these simulations we extract synthetic Lyman $\alpha$ forest spectra and calculate the flux power spectrum. We use the k-sample Anderson-Darling test to analyze the effects of dark energy on the Lyman $\alpha$ forest. We compare each dark energy power spectrum to that due to a cosmological constant power spectrum. We find, however, that there is only a marginal effect of the choice of allowed dark energy models on the flux power spectrum., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables

We investigate the effect on the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) from the presence of a stochastic primordial magnetic field (PMF) whose strength is spatially inhomogeneous. We assume a uniform total energy density and a gaussian distribution of field strength. In this case, domains of different temperatures exist in the BBN epoch due to variations in the local PMF. We show that in such case, the effective distribution function of particle velocities averaged over domains of different temperatures deviates from the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. This deviation is related to the scale invariant strength of the PMF energy density $\rho_{\rm Bc}$ and the fluctuation parameter $\sigma_{\rm B}$. We perform BBN network calculations taking into account the PMF strength distribution, and deduce the element abundances as functions of the baryon-to-photon ratio $\eta$, $\rho_{\rm Bc}$, and $\sigma_{\rm B}$. We find that the fluctuations of the PMF reduces the $^7$Be production and enhances D production. We analyze the averaged thermonuclear reaction rates compared with those of a single temperature, and find that the averaged charged-particle reaction rates are very different. Finally, we constrain the parameters $\rho_{\rm Bc}$ and $\sigma_{\rm B}$ from observed abundances of $^4$He and D, and find that the $^7$Li abundance is significantly reduced. We also find that if the $\eta$ value during BBN was larger than the present-day value due to a dissipation of the PMF or a radiative decay of exotic particles after BBN or if the stellar depletion of $^7$Li occurred, abundances of all light elements can be consistent with observational constraints., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, accepted in ApJ

This paper is superseded by Arxiv:1911.07334. Big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) is a valuable tool to constrain the physics of the early universe and is the only probe of the radiation-dominated epoch. A fundamental assumption in BBN is that the nuclear velocity distributions obey Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics as they do in stars. In this letter, however, we point out that there is a fundamental difference between stellar reaction rates and BBN reaction rates. Specifically, the BBN epoch is characterized by a dilute baryon plasma for which the velocity distribution of nuclei is mainly determined by the dominant Coulomb scattering with mildly relativistic electrons. This modifies the nuclear velocity distributions and significantly alters the thermonuclear reaction rates, and hence, the light-element abundances. We show that this novel result alters all previous calculations of light-element abundances from BBN, and indeed exacerbates the discrepancies between BBN and inferred primordial light-element abundances possibly suggesting the need for new physics in the early universe., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, this paper is superseded by arxiv:1911.07334

The persistent interest of the epitaxy of group IV alloy GeSn is mainly driven by the demand of efficient light source that could be monolithically integrated on Si for mid-infrared Si photonics. For chemical vapor deposition of GeSn, the exploration of parameter window is difficult from the beginning due to its non-equilibrium growth condition. In this work, we demonstrated the effective pathway to achieve the high quality GeSn with high Sn incorporation. The GeSn films were grown on Ge-buffered Si via ultra-high vacuum chemical vapor deposition using GeH4 and SnCl4 as precursor gasses. The influence of both SnCl4 flow fraction and growth temperature on the Sn incorporation and material quality were investigated. The key to achieve effective Sn incorporation and high material quality is to explore the proper parameter match between SnCl4 supply and growth temperature, which is also called optimized growth regime. The Sn precipitation is significantly suppressed in optimized growth regime, leading to more Sn incorporation into Ge and enhanced material quality. The prototype GeSn photoconductors were fabricated with typical samples, showing the promising devices applications towards mid-infrared optoelectronics.

Observations of type Ia supernovae include information about the characteristic nucleosynthesis associated with these thermonuclear explosions. We consider observational constraints from iron-group elemental and isotopic ratios, to compare with various models obtained with the most-realistic recent treatment of electron captures. The nucleosynthesis is sensitive to the highest white-dwarf central densities. Hence, nucleosynthesis yields can distinguish high-density Chandrasekhar-mass models from lower-density burning models such as white-dwarf mergers. We discuss new results of post-processing nucleosynthesis for two spherical models (deflagration and/or delayed detonation models) based upon new electron capture rates. We also consider cylindrical and 3D explosion models (including deflagration, delayed-detonation, or a violent merger model). Although there are uncertainties in the observational constraints, we identify some trends in observations and the models. We make a new comparison of the models with elemental and isotopic ratios from five observed supernovae and three supernova remnants. We find that the models and data tend to fall into two groups. In one group low-density cores such as in a 3D merger model are slightly more consistent with the nucleosynthesis data, while the other group is slightly better identified with higher-density cores such as in single-degenerate 1D-3D deflagration models. Hence, we postulate that both types of environments appear to contribute nearly equally to observed SNIa. We also note that observational constraints on the yields of $^{54}$Cr and $^{54}$Fe, if available, might be used as a means to clarify the degree of geometrical symmetry of SNIa explosions., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The distribution function of the relative velocity in a two-body reaction of nonrelativistic uncorrelated particles is derived for general cases of given distribution functions of single particle velocities. The distribution function is then used in calculations of thermonuclear reaction rates. As an example, we take the Tsallis non-Maxwellian distribution, and show that the distribution function of the relative velocity is different from the Tsallis distribution. We identify an inconsistency in previous studies of nuclear reaction rates within Tsallis statistics, and derive revised nuclear reaction rates. Utilizing the revised rates, accurate results of big bang nucleosynthesis are obtained for the Tsallis statistics. For this application it is more difficult to reduce the primordial 7Li abundance while keeping other nuclear abundances within the observational constraints. A small deviation from a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution can increase the D abundance and slightly reduce 7Li abundance. Although it is impossible to realize a 7Li abundance at the level observed in metal-poor stars, a significant decrease is possible while maintaining a consistency with the observed D abundance., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, Sec. We summarize some applications of big bang nucleosythesis (BBN) and the cosmic microwave background (CMB) to constrain the first moments of the creation of matter in the universe. We review the basic elements of BBN and how it constraints physics of the radiation-dominated epoch. In particular, how the existence of higher dimensions impacts the cosmic expansion through the projection of curvature from the higher dimension in the "dark radiation" term. We summarize current constraints from BBN and the CMB on this brane-world dark radiation term. At the same time, the existence of extra dimensions during the earlier inflation impacts the tensor to scalar ratio and the running spectral index as measured in the CMB. We summarize how the constraints on inflation shift when embedded in higher dimensions. Finally, one expects that the universe was born out of a complicated multiverse landscape near the Planck time. In these moments the energy scale of superstrings was obtainable during the early moments of chaotic inflation. We summarize the quest for cosmological evidence of the birth of space-time out of the string theory landscape. We will explore the possibility that a superstring excitations may have made itself known via a coupling to the field of inflation. This may have left an imprint of "dips" in the power spectrum of temperature fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background. The identification of this particle as a superstring is possible because there may be evidence for different oscillator states of the same superstring that appear on different scales on the sky. It will be shown that from this imprint one can deduce the mass, number of oscillations, and coupling constant for the superstring. We summarize the derivation of the finite temperature, finite chemical potential thermodynamic potential in the bag-model approximation to quantum chromodynamics (QCD) that includes a finite $s$-quark mass in the Feynman diagram contributions for both zero-order and two-loop corrections to the quark interaction. The thermodynamic potential for quarks in QCD is a desired ingredient for computations of the equation of state in the early universe, supernovae, neutron stars, and heavy-ion collisions. The 2-loop contributions are normally divergent and become even more difficult in the limit of finite quark masses and finite chemical potential. We introduce various means to interpolate between the low and high chemical potential limits. Although physically well motivated, we show that the infinite series Pad\'e rational polynomial interpolation scheme introduces spurious poles. Nevertheless, we show that lower order interpolation schemes such as polynomial interpolation reproduce the Pad\'e result without the presence of spurious poles. We propose that in this way one can determine the equation of state for the two-loop corrections for arbitrary chemical potential, temperature and quark mass. This provides a new realistic bag-model treatment of the QCD equation of state. We compute the QCD phase diagram with up to the two-loop corrections. We show that the two-loop corrections decrease the pressure of the quark-gluon plasma and therefore increase the critical temperature and chemical potential of the phase transition. We also show, however, that the correction for finite $s$-quark mass in the two-loop correction serves to decrease the critical temperature for the quark-hadron phase transition in the early universe., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, Matches published version

We utilize an exact quantum calculation to explore axion emission from electrons and protons in the presence of the strong magnetic field of magnetars. The axion is emitted via transitions between the Landau levels generated by the strong magnetic field. The luminosity of axions emitted by protons is shown to be much larger than that of electrons and becomes stronger with increasing matter density. Cooling by axion emission is shown to be much larger than neutrino cooling by the Urca processes. Consequently, axion emission in the crust may significantly contribute to the cooling of magnetars. Primordial nucleosynthesis remains as one of the pillars of modern cosmology. It is the testing ground upon which many cosmological models must ultimately rest. It is our only probe of the universe during the important radiation-dominated epoch in the first few minutes of cosmic expansion. This chapter reviews the basic equations of space-time, cosmology, and big bang nucleosynthesis. We also summarize the current state of observational constraints on primordial abundances along with the key nuclear reactions and their uncertainties. We summarize which nuclear measurements are most crucial during the big bang. We also review various cosmological models and their constraints. We review important reactions in the big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) model involving a long-lived negatively charged massive particle, $X^-$, which is much heavier than nucleons. This model can explain the observed $^7$Li abundances of metal-poor stars, and predicts a primordial $^9$Be abundance that is larger than the standard BBN prediction. In the BBN epoch, nuclei recombine with the $X^-$ particle. Because of the heavy $X^-$ mass, the atomic size of bound states $A_X$ is as small as the nuclear size. The nonresonant recombination rates are then dominated by the $d$-wave $\rightarrow$ 2P transition for $^7$Li and $^{7,9}$Be. The $^7$Be destruction occurs via a recombination with the $X^-$ followed by a proton capture, and the primordial $^7$Li abundance is reduced. Also, the $^9$Be production occurs via the recombination of $^7$Li and $X^-$ followed by deuteron capture. The initial abundance and the lifetime of the $X^-$ particles are constrained from a BBN reaction network calculation. We estimate that the derived parameter region for the $^7$Li reduction is allowed in supersymmetric or Kaluza-Klein (KK) models. We find that either the selectron, smuon, KK electron or KK muon could be candidates for the $X^-$ with $m_X\sim {\mathcal O}(1)$ TeV, while the stau and KK tau cannot., Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures, submitted for a special issue on Big Bang Nucleosynthesis

Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) explores the first few minutes of nuclei formation after the Big Bang. We present updates that result in new constraints at the 2{\sigma} level for the abundances of the four primary light nuclides - D,3He,4He, and 7Li - in BBN. A modified standard BBN code was used in a Monte Carlo analysis of the nucleosynthesis uncertainty as a function of baryon-to-photon ratio. Reaction rates were updated to those of NACRE and REACLIB, and R-Matrix calculations. The results are then used to derive a new constraint on the effective number of neutrinos.

The term dark radiation is used both to describe a noninteracting neutrino species and as a correction to the Friedmann Equation in the simplest five-dimensional RS-II brane-world cosmology. In this paper we consider the constraints on both meanings of dark radiation based upon the newest results for light-element nuclear reaction rates, observed light-element abundances and the power spectrum of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Adding dark radiation during big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) alters the Friedmann expansion rate causing the nuclear reactions to freeze out at a different temperature. This changes the final light element abundances at the end of BBN. Its influence on the CMB is to change the effective expansion rate at the surface of last scattering. We find that the BBN constraint reduces the allowed range for both types of dark radiation at 10 Mev to between $-12.1\%$ and $+6.2\%$ of the {\bf total} background energy density at 10 Mev. Combining this result with fits to the CMB power spectrum, produces different results for particle vs. brane-world dark radiation. In the brane-world, the range decreases to $-6.0\%$ to $+6.2\%$. We explore the possibility that both the suppression of the $\ell = 2$ multipole moment of the power spectrum of cosmic microwave background temperature fluctuations and the possible dip for $\ell = 10-30$ can be explained as well as a possible new dip for $\ell \approx 60$ as the result of the resonant creation of sequential excitations of a fermionic (or bosonic) closed superstring that couples to the inflaton field. We consider a D=26 closed bosonic string with one toroidal compact dimension as an illustration of how string excitations might imprint themselves on the CMB. We analyze the existence of successive momentum states, winding states or oscillations on the string as the source of the three possible dips in the power spectrum. We present an updated general purpose nuclear equation of state (EoS) for use in simulations of core-collapse supernovae, neutron star mergers and black hole collapse. This EoS is formulated in the context of Density Functional Theory (DFT) and is generalized to include all DFT EoSs consistent with known nuclear and astrophysical constraints. This EoS also allows for the possibility of the formation of material with a net proton excess ($Y_p > 0.5$) and has an improved treatment of the nuclear statistical equilibrium and the transition to heavy nuclei as the density approaches nuclear matter density. We include the effects of pions in the regime above nuclear matter density and incorporate all of the known mesonic and baryonic states at high temperature. We analyze how a 3-body nuclear force term in the DFT at high densities stiffens the EoS to satisfy the maximum neutron star constraint, however the density dependence of the symmetry anergy and the formation of pions at high temperatures allows for a softening of the central core in supernova collapse calculations leading to a robust explosion. We also add the possibility of a transition to a QCD chiral-symmetry-restoration and deconfinement phase at densities above nuclear matter density. This paper details the physics, and constraints on, this new EoS and presents an illustration of its implementation in both neutron stars and core-collapse supernova simulations. We analyze the Randal Sundrum brane-world inflation scenario in the context of the latest CMB constraints from Planck. We summarize constraints on the most popular classes of models and explore some more realistic inflaton effective potentials. The constraint on standard inflationary parameters changes in the brane-world scenario. We confirm that in general the brane-world scenario increases the tensor-to-scalar ratio, thus making this paradigm less consistent with the Planck constraints. Indeed, when the BICEP2/Keck constraints are included, all monomial potentials in the brane-world scenario become disfavored compared to the standard scenario. Current models for the $r$ process are summarized with an emphasis on the key constraints from both nuclear physics measurements and astronomical observations. In particular, we analyze the importance of nuclear physics input such as beta-decay rates; nuclear masses; neutron-capture cross sections; beta-delayed neutron emission; probability of spontaneous fission, beta- and neutron-induced fission, fission fragment mass distributions; neutrino-induced reaction cross sections, etc. We highlight the effects on models for $r$-process nucleosynthesis of newly measured $\beta$-decay half-lives, masses, and spectroscopy of neutron-rich nuclei near the $r$-process path. We overview r-process nucleosynthesis in the neutrino driven wind above the proto-neutron star in core collapse supernovae along with the possibility of magneto-hydrodynamic jets from rotating supernova explosion models. We also consider the possibility of neutron star mergers as an r-process environment. A key outcome of newly measured nuclear properties far from stability is the degree of shell quenching for neutron rich isotopes near the closed neutron shells. The power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background from both the {\it Planck} and {\it WMAP} data exhibits a slight dip for multipoles in the range of $l= 10-30$. We show that such a dip could be the result of the resonant creation of massive particles that couple to the inflaton field. For our best-fit models, the epoch of resonant particle creation reenters the horizon at a wave number of $k_* \sim 0.0011 \pm 0.0004 $ ($h$ Mpc$^{-1}$). The amplitude and location of this feature corresponds to the creation of a number of degenerate fermion species of mass $\sim (8-11) /\lambda^{3/2} $ $m_{pl}$ during inflation where $\lambda \sim (1.0 \pm 0.5) N^{-2/5}$ is the coupling constant between the inflaton field and the created fermion species, while $N$ is the number of degenerate species. We have explored the impact of sterile neutrino dark matter on core-collapse supernova explosions. We have included oscillations between electron neutrinos or mixed $\mu,\tau$ neutrinos and right-handed sterile neutrinos into a supernova model. We have chosen sterile neutrino masses and mixing angles that are consistent with sterile neutrino dark matter candidates as indicated by recent x-ray flux measurements. Using these simulations, we have explored the impact of sterile neutrinos on the core bounce and shock reheating. We find that, for ranges of sterile neutrino mass and mixing angle consistent with most dark matter constraints, the shock energy can be significantly enhanced and even a model that does not explode can be made to explode. In addition, we have found that the presence of a sterile neutrino may lead to detectable changes in the observed neutrino luminosities.

We summarize the impact of sterile neutrino dark matter on core-collapse supernova explosions. We explore various oscillations between electron neutrinos or mixed $\mu-\tau$ neutrinos and right-handed sterile neutrinos that may occur within a core-collapse supernova. In particular, we consider sterile neutrino masses and mixing angles that are consistent with sterile neutrino dark matter candidates as indicated by recent X-ray flux measurements. We find that the interpretation of the observed 3.5 keV X-ray excess as due to a decaying 7 keV sterile neutrino that comprises 100\% of the dark matter would have almost no observable effect on supernova explosions. However, in the more realistic case in which the decaying sterile neutrino comprises only a small fraction of the total dark matter density due to the presence of other sterile neutrino flavors, WIMPs, etc., a larger mixing angle is allowed. In this case a 7 keV sterile neutrino could have a significant impact on core-collapse supernovae. We also consider mixing between $\mu-\tau$ neutrinos and sterile neutrinos.
