Abstract: Context. Spectroscopic surveys like APOGEE, GALAH, and LAMOST have significantly advanced our understanding of the Milky Way by providing extensive stellar parameters and chemical abundances. Complementing these, photometric surveys with narrow/medium-band filters, such as the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS), offer the potential to estimate stellar parameters and abundances for a much larger number of stars. Aims. This work develops methodologies to extract stellar atmospheric parameters and selected chemical abundances from S-PLUS photometric data, which spans ~3000 square degrees using seven narrowband and five broadband filters. Methods. Using 66 S-PLUS colors, we estimated parameters based on training samples from LAMOST, APOGEE, and GALAH, applying Cost-Sensitive Neural Networks (NN) and Random Forests (RF). We tested for spurious correlations by including abundances not covered by the S-PLUS filters and evaluated NN and RF performance, with NN consistently outperforming RF. Including Teff and log g as features improved accuracy by ~3%. We retained only parameters with a goodness-of-fit above 50%. Results. Our approach provides reliable estimates of fundamental parameters (Teff, log g, [Fe/H]) and abundance ratios such as [{\alpha}/Fe], [Al/Fe], [C/Fe], [Li/Fe], and [Mg/Fe] for ~5 million stars, with goodness-of-fit >60%. Additional ratios like [Cu/Fe], [O/Fe], and [Si/Fe] were derived but are less accurate. Validation using star clusters, TESS, and J-PLUS data confirmed the robustness of our methodology. Conclusions. By leveraging S-PLUS photometry and machine learning, we present a cost-effective alternative to high-resolution spectroscopy for deriving stellar parameters and abundances, enabling insights into Milky Way stellar populations and supporting future classification efforts., Comment: 23 pages, 14 Figures

Abstract: The hydrogen recombination lines H30$\alpha$, H40$\alpha$, H42$\alpha$, H50$\beta$ and H57$\gamma$ and the underlying bremsstrahlung continuum emission were detected with ALMA in the bipolar nebula Mz3. The source was not spatially resolved, but the velocity profile of the H30$\alpha$ line shows clear indication of maser amplification, confirming previous reports of laser amplification in the far infrared H recombination lines observed with Herschel Space Observatory. Comparison between the flux densities of the H50$\beta$, H40$\alpha$ and H42$\alpha$ lines show overcooling, or darkness amplification by stimulated absorption (dasar effect) at the LSR velocity of about $-25$ km s$^{-1}$, which constrains the density of the absorbing region to about 10$^3$ cm$^{-3}$. The H30$\alpha$ line, on the other hand, presents maser lines at LSR velocities of $-69$ and $-98$ km s$^{-1}$, which indicates ionized gas with densities close to 10$^7$ cm$^{-3}$. Although the source of emission was not resolved, it was possible to find the central position of the images for each velocity interval, which resulted in a well defined position-velocity distribution., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Abstract: Monochromatic gamma-ray signals constitute a potential smoking gun signature for annihilating or decaying dark matter particles that could relatively easily be distinguished from astrophysical or instrumental backgrounds. We provide an updated assessment of the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to such signals, based on observations of the Galactic centre region as well as of selected dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We find that current limits and detection prospects for dark matter masses above 300 GeV will be significantly improved, by up to an order of magnitude in the multi-TeV range. This demonstrates that CTA will set a new standard for gamma-ray astronomy also in this respect, as the world's largest and most sensitive high-energy gamma-ray observatory, in particular due to its exquisite energy resolution at TeV energies and the adopted observational strategy focussing on regions with large dark matter densities. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date instrument response functions, and we thoroughly model the effect of instrumental systematic uncertainties in our statistical treatment. 4. New constrained generalized Killing spinor field classes in warped flux compactifications

Abstract: The generalized Fierz identities are addressed in the K\"ahler-Atiyah bundle framework from the perspective of the equations governing constrained generalized Killing spinor fields. We explore the spin geometry in a Riemannian 8-manifold composing a warped flux compactification AdS$_3\times M_8$, whose metric and fluxes preserve one supersymmetry in AdS$_3$. Supersymmetry conditions can be efficiently translated into spinor bilinear covariants, whose algebraic and differential constraints yield identifying new spinor field classes. 5. The Local Group Symbiotic Star Population and its Weak Relation with Type Ia Supernovae

Abstract: Here we study the symbiotic stars (SySt) population and its relation with type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) in the galaxies of the Local Group. SySt are low- and/or intermediate-mass evolved binary systems where a white dwarf (WD) accretes mass from a giant star. A fraction of these WDs can become massive enough to reach the Chandrasekhar mass. Therefore, SySt have been considered as potential SNe Ia progenitors. Taking two approaches, one empirical and another statistical, we estimated the SySt population on the Galaxy as having a minimum value of $1.69\times10^3$ and a expected one of $3.23\times10^4$. For Local Group dwarfs galaxies, the computed SySt population ranges from 2 to 4 orders of magnitudes lower. Concerning the SNe Ia with SySt progenitors, our general result is that SySt are not the main SNe Ia progenitors. On the other hand, we still expect that about 0.5-8% of the SNe Ia have symbiotic progenitors in the Milky Way, while the majority of the - low-mass - dwarfs galaxies did not experience a symbiotic type Ia supernova., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables

Abstract: Galaxy clusters are expected to be dark matter (DM) reservoirs and storage rooms for the cosmic-ray protons (CRp) that accumulate along the cluster's formation history. Accordingly, they are excellent targets to search for signals of DM annihilation and decay at gamma-ray energies and are predicted to be sources of large-scale gamma-ray emission due to hadronic interactions in the intracluster medium. We estimate the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to detect diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Perseus galaxy cluster. We perform a detailed spatial and spectral modelling of the expected signal for the DM and the CRp components. For each, we compute the expected CTA sensitivity. The observing strategy of Perseus is also discussed. In the absence of a diffuse signal (non-detection), CTA should constrain the CRp to thermal energy ratio within the radius $R_{500}$ down to about $X_{500}<3\times 10^{-3}$, for a spatial CRp distribution that follows the thermal gas and a CRp spectral index $\alpha_{\rm CRp}=2.3$. Under the optimistic assumption of a pure hadronic origin of the Perseus radio mini-halo and depending on the assumed magnetic field profile, CTA should measure $\alpha_{\rm CRp}$ down to about $\Delta\alpha_{\rm CRp}\simeq 0.1$ and the CRp spatial distribution with 10% precision. Regarding DM, CTA should improve the current ground-based gamma-ray DM limits from clusters observations on the velocity-averaged annihilation cross-section by a factor of up to $\sim 5$, depending on the modelling of DM halo substructure. In the case of decay of DM particles, CTA will explore a new region of the parameter space, reaching models with $\tau_{\chi}>10^{27}$s for DM masses above 1 TeV. These constraints will provide unprecedented sensitivity to the physics of both CRp acceleration and transport at cluster scale and to TeV DM particle models, especially in the decay scenario., Comment: 93 pages (including author list, appendix and references), 143 figures. We prove that two meteor graphs are shift equivalent if and only if they are strongly shift equivalent, if and only if their corresponding Leavitt path algebras are graded Morita equivalent, if and only if their graded $K$-theories, $K_0^{gr}$, are $\mathbb Z [x,x^{-1}]$-module isomorphic. Abstract: The local Cosmic Ray (CR) energy spectrum exhibits a spectral softening at energies around 3~PeV. Sources which are capable of accelerating hadrons to such energies are called hadronic PeVatrons. However, hadronic PeVatrons have not yet been firmly identified within the Galaxy. Several source classes, including Galactic Supernova Remnants (SNRs), have been proposed as PeVatron candidates. The potential to search for hadronic PeVatrons with the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is assessed. The focus is on the usage of very high energy $\gamma$-ray spectral signatures for the identification of PeVatrons. Assuming that SNRs can accelerate CRs up to knee energies, the number of Galactic SNRs which can be identified as PeVatrons with CTA is estimated within a model for the evolution of SNRs. Additionally, the potential of a follow-up observation strategy under moonlight conditions for PeVatron searches is investigated. Statistical methods for the identification of PeVatrons are introduced, and realistic Monte--Carlo simulations of the response of the CTA observatory to the emission spectra from hadronic PeVatrons are performed. Based on simulations of a simplified model for the evolution for SNRs, the detection of a $\gamma$-ray signal from in average 9 Galactic PeVatron SNRs is expected to result from the scan of the Galactic plane with CTA after 10 hours of exposure. Abstract: With a unique set of 54 overlapping narrow-band and two broader filters covering the entire optical range, the incoming Javalambre-Physics of the Accelerating Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) will provide a great opportunity for stellar physics and near-field cosmology. In this work, we use the miniJPAS data in 56 J-PAS filters and 4 complementary SDSS-like filters to explore and prove the potential of the J-PAS filter system in characterizing stars and deriving their atmospheric parameters. We obtain estimates for the effective temperature with a good precision (<150 K) from spectral energy distribution fitting. We have constructed the metallicity-dependent stellar loci in 59 colours for the miniJPAS FGK dwarf stars, after correcting certain systematic errors in flat-fielding. The very blue colours, including uJAVA-r, J0378-r, J0390-r, uJPAS-r, show the strongest metallicity dependence, around 0.25 mag/dex. The sensitivities decrease to about 0.1 mag/dex for the J0400-r, J0410-r, and J0420-r colours. The locus fitting residuals show peaks at the J0390, J0430, J0510, and J0520 filters, suggesting that individual elemental abundances such as [Ca/Fe], [C/Fe], and [Mg/Fe] can also be determined from the J-PAS photometry. Via stellar loci, we have achieved a typical metallicity precision of 0.1 dex. The miniJPAS filters also demonstrate strong potential in discriminating dwarfs and giants, particularly the J0520 and J0510 filters. Abstract: A future Higgs Factory will provide improved precision on measurements of Higgs couplings beyond those obtained by the LHC, and will enable a broad range of investigations across the fields of fundamental physics, including the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking, the origin of the masses and mixing of fundamental particles, the predominance of matter over antimatter, and the nature of dark matter. Future colliders will measure Higgs couplings to a few per cent, giving a window to beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics in the 1-10 TeV range. Abstract: The ASTRI (Astrofisica con Specchi a Tecnologia Replicante Italiana) Project led by the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) is developing and will deploy at the Observatorio del Teide a mini-array (ASTRI Mini-Array) composed of nine telescopes similar to the small-size dual-mirror Schwarzschild-Couder telescope (ASTRI-Horn) currently operating on the slopes of Mt. Etna in Sicily. The ASTRI Mini-Array will surpass the current Cherenkov telescope array differential sensitivity above a few tera-electronvolt (TeV), extending the energy band well above hundreds of TeV. This will allow us to explore a new window of the electromagnetic spectrum, by convolving the sensitivity performance with excellent angular and energy resolution figures. Abstract: Integral field spectroscopy (IFS) provides a unique capability to spectroscopically study extended sources over a 2D field of view, but it also requires new techniques and tools. In this paper, we present an automatic code, Spectroscopic Analysis Tool for intEgraL fieLd unIt daTacubEs, SATELLITE, designed to fully explore such capability in the characterization of extended objects, such as planetary nebulae, H II regions, galaxies, etc. SATELLITE carries out 1D and 2D spectroscopic analysis through a number of pseudo-slits that simulate slit spectrometry, as well as emission line imaging. The 1D analysis permits direct comparison of the integral field unit (IFU) data with previous studies based on long-slit spectroscopy, while the 2D analysis allows the exploration of physical properties in both spatial directions. Interstellar extinction, electron temperatures and densities, ionic abundances from collisionally excited lines, total elemental abundances and ionization correction factors are computed employing the Pyneb package. A Monte Carlo approach is implemented in the code to compute the uncertainties for all the physical parameters. SATELLITE provides a powerful tool to extract physical information from IFS observations in an automatic and user configurable way. The capabilities and performance of SATELLITE are demonstrated by means of a comparison between the results obtained from the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) data of the planetary nebula NGC 7009 with the results obtained from long-slit and IFU data available in the literature. Abstract: In this article, we provide an explicit description of a set of generators for any ideal of an ultragraph Leavitt path algebra. We provide several additional consequences of this description, including information about generating sets for graded ideals, the graded uniqueness and Cuntz-Krieger theorems, the semiprimeness, and the semiprimitivity of ultragraph Leavitt path algebras, a complete characterization of the prime and primitive ideals of an ultragraph Leavitt path algebra. We also show that every primitive ideal of an ultragraph Leavitt path algebra is exactly the annihilator of a Chen simple module. Consequently, we prove Exel's Effros-Hahn conjecture on primitive ideals in the ultragraph Leavitt path algebra setting (a conclusion that is also new in the context of Leavitt path algebras of graphs).

Abstract: Distance geometry problem belongs to a class of hard problems in classical computation that can be understood in terms of a set of inputs processed according to a given transformation, and for which the number of possible outcomes grows exponentially with the number of inputs. It is conjectured that quantum computing schemes can solve problems belonging to this class in a time that grows only at a polynomial rate with the number of inputs. While quantum computers are still being developed, there are some classical optics computation approaches that can perform very well for specific tasks. After presenting the classification of the homotopy classes of such maps, we prove that the minimal root set for a non null-homotopic map is either a circle or the disjoint union of two circle, according its range is $S^2$ or $\RP^2$, respectively.

Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the new-generation ground-based observatory for $\gamma$-ray astronomy, provides unique capabilities to address significant open questions in astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics. We study some of the salient areas of $\gamma$-ray cosmology that can be explored as part of the Key Science Projects of CTA, through simulated observations of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and of their relativistic jets. Observations of AGN with CTA will enable a measurement of $\gamma$-ray absorption on the extragalactic background light with a statistical uncertainty below 15% up to a redshift $z=2$ and to constrain or detect $\gamma$-ray halos up to intergalactic-magnetic-field strengths of at least 0.3pG. Extragalactic observations with CTA also show promising potential to probe physics beyond the Standard Model. The best limits on Lorentz invariance violation from $\gamma$-ray astronomy will be improved by a factor of at least two to three. CTA will also probe the parameter space in which axion-like particles could constitute a significant fraction, if not all, of dark matter. 19. $\eta$ Carinae: high angular resolution continuum, H30$\alpha$ and He30$\alpha$ ALMA images

Abstract: We present images of $\eta$ Carinae in the recombination lines H30$\alpha$ and He30$\alpha$ and the underlying continuum with 50~mas resolution (110 AU), obtained with ALMA. For the first time, the 230 GHz continuum image is resolved into a compact core, coincident with the binary system position, and a weaker extended structure to the NW of the compact source. Iso-velocity images of the H30$\alpha$ recombination line show at least 16 unresolved sources with velocities between -30 and -65 km s$^{-1}$ distributed within the continuum source. A NLTE model, with density and temperature of the order $10^7$ cm$^{-3}$ and $10^4$ K, reproduce both the observed H30$\alpha$ line profiles and their underlying continuum flux densities. Three of these sources are identified with Weigelt blobs D, C and B; estimating their proper motions, we derive ejection times (in years) of 1952.6, 1957.1, and 1967.6, respectively, all of which are close to periastron passage. Weaker H30$\alpha$ line emission is detected at higher positive and negative velocities, extending in the direction of the Homunculus axis. The He30$\alpha$ recombination line is also detected with the same velocity of the narrow H30$\alpha$ line. Finally, the close resemblance of the H30$\alpha$ image with that of an emission line that was reported in the literature as HCO$^+$(4-3) led us to identify this line as H40$\delta$ instead, an identification that is further supported by modeling results. Future observations will enable to determine the proper motions of all the compact sources discovered in the new high-angular resolution data of $\eta$ Carinae., Comment: Accepted for publication in mnras

20. Inverted metallicity gradients in two Virgo cluster star-forming dwarf galaxies: evidence of recent merging?

Abstract: We present integral field spectroscopy observations of two star-forming dwarf galaxies in the Virgo cluster (VCC135 and VCC324) obtained with PMAS/PPak at the Calar Alto 3.5 meter telescope. We derive metallicity maps using the N2 empirical calibrator. The galaxies show positive gas metallicity gradients, contrarily to what is usually found in other dwarfs or in spiral galaxies. We measure gradient slopes of 0.20 $\pm$ 0.06 and 0.15 $\pm$ 0.03 dex/$R_e$ for VCC135 and VCC324, respectively. Such a trend has been only observed in few, very isolated galaxies, or at higher redshifts ($z >$ 1). It is thought to be associated with accretion of metal-poor gas from the intergalactic medium, a mechanism that would be less likely to occur in a high-density environment like Virgo. We combine emission line observations with deep optical images to investigate the origin of the peculiar metallicity gradient. The presence of weak underlying substructures in both galaxies and the analysis of morphological diagnostics and of ionised gas kinematics suggest that the inflow of metal-poor gas to the central regions of the dwarfs may be related to a recent merging event with a gas-rich companion., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, MNRAS in press. Abstract: We provide an updated assessment of the power of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to search for thermally produced dark matter at the TeV scale, via the associated gamma-ray signal from pair-annihilating dark matter particles in the region around the Galactic centre. We find that CTA will open a new window of discovery potential, significantly extending the range of robustly testable models given a standard cuspy profile of the dark matter density distribution. Importantly, even for a cored profile, the projected sensitivity of CTA will be sufficient to probe various well-motivated models of thermally produced dark matter at the TeV scale. This is due to CTA's unprecedented sensitivity, angular and energy resolutions, and the planned observational strategy. The survey of the inner Galaxy will cover a much larger region than corresponding previous observational campaigns with imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. CTA will map with unprecedented precision the large-scale diffuse emission in high-energy gamma rays, constituting a background for dark matter searches for which we adopt state-of-the-art models based on current data. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date event reconstruction Monte Carlo tools developed by the CTA consortium, and pay special attention to quantifying the level of instrumental systematic uncertainties, as well as background template systematic errors, required to probe thermally produced dark matter at these energies. Abstract: The Javalambre-Physics of the Accelerating Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) will soon start to scan thousands of square degrees of the northern extragalactic sky with a unique set of $56$ optical filters from a dedicated $2.55$m telescope, JST, at the Javalambre Astrophysical Observatory. Before the arrival of the final instrument (a 1.2 Gpixels, 4.2deg$^2$ field-of-view camera), the JST was equipped with an interim camera (JPAS-Pathfinder), composed of one CCD with a 0.3deg$^2$ field-of-view and resolution of 0.23 arcsec pixel$^{-1}$. To demonstrate the scientific potential of J-PAS, with the JPAS-Pathfinder camera we carried out a survey on the AEGIS field (along the Extended Groth Strip), dubbed miniJPAS. We observed a total of $\sim 1$ deg$^2$, with the $56$ J-PAS filters, which include $54$ narrow band (NB, $\rm{FWHM} \sim 145$Angstrom) and two broader filters extending to the UV and the near-infrared, complemented by the $u,g,r,i$ SDSS broad band (BB) filters. In this paper we present the miniJPAS data set, the details of the catalogues and data access, and illustrate the scientific potential of our multi-band data. The data surpass the target depths originally planned for J-PAS, reaching $\rm{mag}_{\rm {AB}}$ between $\sim 22$ and $23.5$ for the NB filters and up to $24$ for the BB filters ($5\sigma$ in a $3$~arcsec aperture). The miniJPAS primary catalogue contains more than $64,000$ sources extracted in the $r$ detection band with forced photometry in all other bands. We estimate the catalogue to be complete up to $r=23.6$ for point-like sources and up to $r=22.7$ for extended sources. Photometric redshifts reach subpercent precision for all sources up to $r=22.5$, and a precision of $\sim 0.3$% for about half of the sample. Abstract: From the approximately $\sim$3,500 planetary nebulae (PNe) discovered in our Galaxy, only 14 are known to be members of the Galactic halo. Nevertheless, a systematic search for halo PNe has never been performed. In this study, we present new photometric diagnostic tools to identify compact PNe in the Galactic halo by making use of the novel 12-filter system projects, J-PLUS (Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey) and S-PLUS (Southern-Photometric Local Universe Survey). We reconstructed the IPHAS (Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) Photometric H${\alpha}$ Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane) diagnostic diagram and propose four new ones using i) the J-PLUS and S-PLUS synthetic photometry for a grid of photo-ionisation models of halo PNe, ii) several observed halo PNe, as well as iii) a number of other emission-line objects that resemble PNe. All colour-colour diagnostic diagrams are validated using two known halo PNe observed by J-PLUS during the scientific verification phase and the first data release (DR1) of S-PLUS and the DR1 of J-PLUS. By applying our criteria to the DR1s ($\sim$1,190 deg$^2$), we identified one PN candidate. However, optical follow-up spectroscopy proved it to be a H II region belonging to the UGC 5272 galaxy. Here, we also discuss the PN and two H II galaxies recovered by these selection criteria. Finally, the cross-matching with the most updated PNe catalogue (HASH) helped us to highlight the potential of these surveys, since we recover all the known PNe in the observed area. The tools here proposed to identify PNe and separate them from their emission-line contaminants proved to be very efficient thanks to the combination of many colours, even when applied -like in the present work- to an automatic photometric search that is limited to compact PNe., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication at A&A

Abstract: We simulate the spectral behaviour of the non-transient gamma-ray binaries using archival observations as a reference. With this we test the CTA capability to measure the sources' spectral parameters and detect variability on various time scales. We review the known properties of gamma-ray binaries and the theoretical models that have been used to describe their spectral and timing characteristics. We show that CTA is capable of studying these sources on time scales comparable to their characteristic variability time scales. For most of the binaries, the unprecedented sensitivity of CTA will allow the spectral evolution to be studied on a time scale as short as 30 min. This will enable a direct comparison of the TeV and lower energy (radio to GeV) properties of these sources from simultaneous observations. 26. Corrugated Features in Coronal-mass-ejections-driven Shocks: A Discussion on the Predisposition to Particle Acceleration

Abstract: The study of the acceleration of particles is an essential element of research in the heliospheric science. Here, we discuss the predisposition to the particle acceleration around coronal mass ejections (CMEs)-driven shocks with corrugated wave-like features. We adopt these attributes on shocks formed from disturbances due to the bimodal solar wind, CME deflection, irregular CME expansion, and the ubiquitous fluctuations in the solar corona. In order to understand the role of a wavy shock in particle acceleration, we define three initial smooth shock morphologies each one associated with a fast CME. Using polar Gaussian profiles we model these shocks in the low corona. We establish the corrugated appearance on smooth shock by using combinations of wave-like functions that represent the disturbances from medium and CME piston. For both shock types, smooth and corrugated, we calculate the shock normal angles between the shock normal and the radial upstream coronal magnetic field in order to classify the quasi-parallel and quasi-perpendicular regions. We consider that corrugated shocks are predisposed to different process of particle acceleration due to irregular distributions of shock normal angles around of the shock. We suggest that disturbances due to CME irregular expansion may be a decisive factor in origin of particle acceleration. Finally, we regard that accepting these features on shocks may be the start point for investigating some questions in the sheath and shock, like downstream-jets, instabilities, shock thermalization, shock stability, and injection particle process., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Abstract: In this paper we present a thorough discussion about the photometric redshift (photo-z) performance of the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS). This survey combines a 7 narrow + 5 broad passband filter system, with a typical photometric-depth of r$\sim$21 AB. For this exercise, we utilize the Data Release 1 (DR1), corresponding to 336 deg$^{2}$ from the Stripe-82 region. We rely on the \texttt{BPZ2} code to compute our estimates, using a new library of SED models, which includes additional templates for quiescent galaxies. When compared to a spectroscopic redshift control sample of $\sim$100k galaxies, we find a precision of $\sigma_{z}<$0.8\%, $<$2.0\% or $<$3.0\% for galaxies with magnitudes r$<$17, $<$19 and $<$21, respectively. A precision of 0.6\% is attained for galaxies with the highest \texttt{Odds} values. These estimates have a negligible bias and a fraction of catastrophic outliers inferior to 1\%. Abstract: The Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) is imaging ~9300 deg^2 of the celestial sphere in twelve optical bands using a dedicated 0.8 m robotic telescope, the T80-South, at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, Chile. The telescope is equipped with a 9.2k by 9.2k e2v detector with 10 um pixels, resulting in a field-of-view of 2 deg^2 with a plate scale of 0.55"/pixel. The survey consists of four main subfields, which include two non-contiguous fields at high Galactic latitudes (8000 deg^2 at |b| > 30 deg) and two areas of the Galactic plane and bulge (for an additional 1300 deg^2). S-PLUS uses the Javalambre 12-band magnitude system, which includes the 5 u, g, r, i, z broad-band filters and 7 narrow-band filters centered on prominent stellar spectral features: the Balmer jump/[OII], Ca H+K, H-delta, G-band, Mg b triplet, H-alpha, and the Ca triplet. S-PLUS delivers accurate photometric redshifts (delta_z/(1+z) = 0.02 or better) for galaxies with r < 20 AB mag and redshift < 0.5, thus producing a 3D map of the local Universe over a volume of more than 1 (Gpc/h)^3. The final S-PLUS catalogue will also enable the study of star formation and stellar populations in and around the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, as well as searches for quasars, variable sources, and low-metallicity stars. In this paper we introduce the main characteristics of the survey, illustrated with science verification data highlighting the unique capabilities of S-PLUS. 29. Massive star formation via torus accretion: the effect of photoionization feedback

Abstract: The formation of massive stars is a long standing problem. Although a number of theories of massive star formation exist, ideas appear to converge to a disk-mediated accretion scenario. Here we present radiative hydrodynamic simulations of a star accreting mass via a disk embedded in a torus. We use a Monte Carlo based radiation hydrodynamics code to investigate the impact that ionizing radiation has on the torus. Ionized regions in the torus midplane are found to be either gravitationally trapped or in pressure driven expansion depending on whether or not the size of the ionized region exceeds a critical radius. Trapped Hii regions in the torus plane allow accretion to progress, while expanding Hii regions disrupt the accretion torus preventing the central star from aggregating more mass, thereby setting the star's final mass. Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the major next-generation observatory for ground-based very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy. It will improve the sensitivity of current ground-based instruments by a factor of five to twenty, depending on the energy, greatly improving both their angular and energy resolutions over four decades in energy (from 20 GeV to 300 TeV). This achievement will be possible by using tens of imaging Cherenkov telescopes of three successive sizes. They will be arranged into two arrays, one per hemisphere, located on the La Palma island (Spain) and in Paranal (Chile). Abstract: Symbiotic stars (SySts) are long-period interacting binaries composed of a hot compact star, an evolved giant star, and a tangled network of gas and dust nebulae. They represent unique laboratories for studying a variety of important astrophysical problems, and have also been proposed as possible progenitors of SNIa. Presently, we know 257 SySts in the Milky Way and 69 in external galaxies. However, these numbers are still in striking contrast with the predicted population of SySts in our Galaxy. Because of other astrophysical sources that mimic SySt colors, no photometric diagnostic tool has so far demonstrated the power to unambiguously identify a SySt, thus making the recourse to costly spectroscopic follow-up still inescapable. In this paper we present the concept, commissioning, and science verification phases, as well as the first scientific results, of RAMSES II - a Gemini Observatory Instrument Upgrade Project that has provided each GMOS instrument at both Gemini telescopes with a set of narrow-band filters centered on the Raman OVI 6830 A band. Continuum-subtracted images using these new filters clearly revealed known SySts with a range of Raman OVI line strengths, even in crowded fields. RAMSES II observations also produced the first detection of Raman OVI emission from the SySt LMC 1 and confirmed Hen 3-1768 as a new SySt - the first photometric confirmation of a SySt. Via Raman OVI narrow-band imaging, RAMSES II provides the astronomical community with the first purely photometric tool for hunting SySts in the local Universe., Comment: 23 pages, 16 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in AJ

Abstract: The discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, by the ATLAS and CMS experiments, was a success achieved with only a percent of the entire dataset foreseen for the LHC. It opened a landscape of possibilities in the study of Higgs boson properties, Electroweak Symmetry breaking and the Standard Model in general, as well as new avenues in probing new physics beyond the Standard Model. Six years after the discovery, with a conspicuously larger dataset collected during LHC Run 2 at a 13 TeV centre-of-mass energy, the theory and experimental particle physics communities have started a meticulous exploration of the potential for precision measurements of its properties. This includes studies of Higgs boson production and decays processes, the search for rare decays and production modes, high energy observables, and searches for an extended electroweak symmetry breaking sector. This report summarises the potential reach and opportunities in Higgs physics during the High Luminosity phase of the LHC, with an expected dataset of pp collisions at 14 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 ab$^{-1}$. These studies are performed in light of the most recent analyses from LHC collaborations and the latest theoretical developments. Abstract: For $g\geq1$ denote by $F_{2g}=\langle x_1, y_1,\dots,x_g,y_g\rangle$ the free group on $2g$ generators and by $B_g=[x_1,y_1]\dots[x_g,y_g]$. For $l,c\geq 1$ and elements $w_1,\dots,w_l\in F_{2g}$ we study orientable quadratic equations of the form $[u_1,v_1]\dots[u_h,v_h]=(B_g^{w_1})^c(B_g^{w_2})^c\dots(B_g^{w_l})^c$ with unknowns $u_1,v_1,\dots,u_h,v_h$ and provide explicit solutions for them for the minimal possible number $h$. In the particular case when $g=1$, $w_i=y_1^{i-1}$ for $i=1,\dots,l$ and $h$ the minimal number which satisfies $h \geq l(c-1)/2+1$ we provide two types of solutions depending on the image of the subgroup $H=\langle u_1,v_1,\dots,u_h,v_h\rangle$ generated by the solution under the natural homomorphism $p:F_2\to F_2/[F_2,F_2]$: the first solution, which is called a primitive solution, satisfies $p(H)=F_2/[F_2,F_2]$, the second solution satisfies $p(H) = \big\langle p(x_1),p(y_1^l)\big\rangle$. We also provide an explicit solution of the equation $[u_1,v_1]\dots[u_k, v_k] = \big(B_1\big)^{k+l} \big({B_1}^{y}\big)^{k-l}$ for $k>l\geq0$ in $F_2$, and prove that if $l\neq0$, then every solution of this equation is primitive. As a geometrical consequence, for every solution we obtain a map $f:S_h\to T$ from the orientable surface $S_h$ of genus $h$ to the torus $T=S_1$ which has the minimal number of roots among all maps from the homotopy class of $f$. Depending on the number $|p(F_2):p(H)|$ such maps have fundamentally different geometric properties: in some cases they satisfy the Wecken property and in other cases not.

Abstract: In the present paper we aim to validate a methodology designed to extract the Halpha emission line flux from J-PLUS photometric data. J-PLUS is a multi narrow-band filter survey carried out with the 2 deg2 field of view T80Cam camera, mounted on the JAST/T80 telescope in the OAJ, Teruel, Spain. The information of the twelve J-PLUS bands, including the J0660 narrow-band filter located at rest-frame Halpha, is used over 42 deg2 to extract de-reddened and [NII] decontaminated Halpha emission line fluxes of 46 star-forming regions with previous SDSS and/or CALIFA spectroscopic information. The agreement of the inferred J-PLUS photometric Halpha fluxes and those obtained with spectroscopic data is remarkable, with a median comparison ratio R = 1.05 +- 0.25. This demonstrates that it is possible to retrieve reliable Halpha emission line fluxes from J-PLUS photometric data. With an expected area of thousands of square degrees upon completion, the J-PLUS dataset will allow the study of several star formation science cases in the nearby universe, as the spatially resolved star formation rate of nearby galaxies at z < 0.015, and how it is influenced by the environment, morphology or nuclear activity. As an illustrative example, the close pair of interacting galaxies NGC3994 and NGC3995 is analyzed, finding an enhancement of the star formation rate not only in the center, but also in outer parts of the disk of NGC3994., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. Abstract: J-PLUS is an ongoing 12-band photometric optical survey, observing thousands of square degrees of the Northern hemisphere from the dedicated JAST/T80 telescope at the Observatorio Astrof\'isico de Javalambre. T80Cam is a 2 sq.deg field-of-view camera mounted on this 83cm-diameter telescope, and is equipped with a unique system of filters spanning the entire optical range. This filter system is a combination of broad, medium and narrow-band filters, optimally designed to extract the rest-frame spectral features (the 3700-4000\AA\ Balmer break region, H$\delta$, Ca H+K, the G-band, the Mgb and Ca triplets) that are key to both characterize stellar types and to deliver a low-resolution photo-spectrum for each pixel of the sky observed. With a typical depth of AB $\sim 21.25$ mag per band, this filter set thus allows for an indiscriminate and accurate characterization of the stellar population in our Galaxy, it provides an unprecedented 2D photo-spectral information for all resolved galaxies in the local universe, as well as accurate photo-z estimates ($\Delta\,z\sim 0.01-0.03$) for moderately bright (up to $r\sim 20$ mag) extragalactic sources. While some narrow band filters are designed for the study of particular emission features ([OII]/$\lambda$3727, H$\alpha$/$\lambda$6563) up to $z < 0.015$, they also provide well-defined windows for the analysis of other emission lines at higher redshifts. As a result, J-PLUS has the potential to contribute to a wide range of fields in Astrophysics, both in the nearby universe (Milky Way, 2D IFU-like studies, stellar populations of nearby and moderate redshift galaxies, clusters of galaxies) and at high redshifts (ELGs at $z\approx 0.77, 2.2$ and $4.4$, QSOs, etc). Abstract: We present the results of prompt optical follow-up of the electromagnetic counterpart of the gravitational-wave event GW170817 by the Transient Optical Robotic Observatory of the South Collaboration (TOROS). We detected highly significant dimming in the light curves of the counterpart (Delta g=0.17+-0.03 mag, Delta r=0.14+-0.02 mag, Delta i=0.10 +- 0.03 mag) over the course of only 80 minutes of observations obtained ~35 hr after the trigger with the T80-South telescope. A second epoch of observations, obtained ~59 hr after the event with the EABA 1.5m telescope, confirms the fast fading nature of the transient. The observed colors of the counterpart suggest that this event was a "blue kilonova" relatively free of lanthanides., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array, CTA, will be the major global observatory for very high energy gamma-ray astronomy over the next decade and beyond. The scientific potential of CTA is extremely broad: from understanding the role of relativistic cosmic particles to the search for dark matter. CTA is an explorer of the extreme universe, probing environments from the immediate neighbourhood of black holes to cosmic voids on the largest scales. Covering a huge range in photon energy from 20 GeV to 300 TeV, CTA will improve on all aspects of performance with respect to current instruments. The observatory will operate arrays on sites in both hemispheres to provide full sky coverage and will hence maximize the potential for the rarest phenomena such as very nearby supernovae, gamma-ray bursts or gravitational wave transients. With 99 telescopes on the southern site and 19 telescopes on the northern site, flexible operation will be possible, with sub-arrays available for specific tasks. CTA will have important synergies with many of the new generation of major astronomical and astroparticle observatories. Multi-wavelength and multi-messenger approaches combining CTA data with those from other instruments will lead to a deeper understanding of the broad-band non-thermal properties of target sources. The CTA Observatory will be operated as an open, proposal-driven observatory, with all data available on a public archive after a pre-defined proprietary period. Scientists from institutions worldwide have combined together to form the CTA Consortium. This Consortium has prepared a proposal for a Core Programme of highly motivated observations. The programme, encompassing approximately 40% of the available observing time over the first ten years of CTA operation, is made up of individual Key Science Projects (KSPs), which are presented in this document., Comment: 213 pages, including references and glossary. The current CTA design consists of two arrays of tens of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, comprising Small, Medium and Large-Sized Telescopes, with one array located in each of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. To study the effect of the site choice on the overall \gls{cta} performance and support the site evaluation process, detailed Monte Carlo simulations have been performed. Abstract: We perform simulations for future Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observations of RX~J1713.7$-$3946, a young supernova remnant (SNR) and one of the brightest sources ever discovered in very-high-energy (VHE) gamma rays. Special attention is paid to explore possible spatial (anti-)correlations of gamma rays with emission at other wavelengths, in particular X-rays and CO/H{\sc i} emission. We present a series of simulated images of RX J1713.7$-$3946 for CTA based on a set of observationally motivated models for the gamma-ray emission. In these models, VHE gamma rays produced by high-energy electrons are assumed to trace the non-thermal X-ray emission observed by {\it XMM-Newton}, whereas those originating from relativistic protons delineate the local gas distributions. The local atomic and molecular gas distributions are deduced by the NANTEN team from CO and H{\sc i} observations. Our primary goal is to show how one can distinguish the emission mechanism(s) of the gamma rays (i.e., hadronic vs leptonic, or a mixture of the two) through information provided by their spatial distribution, spectra, and time variation. This work is the first attempt to quantitatively evaluate the capabilities of CTA to achieve various proposed scientific goals by observing this important cosmic particle accelerator., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures. Abstract: Statistical analysis of Faraday Rotation Measure (RM) maps of the intracluster medium (ICM) of galaxy clusters provides a unique tool to evaluate some spatial features of the magnetic fields there. Its combination with numerical simulations of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence allows the diagnosis of the ICM turbulence. Being the ICM plasma weakly collisional, the thermal velocity distribution of the particles naturally develops anisotropies as a consequence of the large scale motions and the conservation of the magnetic moment of the charged particles. A previous study (Paper I) analyzed the impact of large scale thermal anisotropy on the statistics of RM maps synthesized from simulations of turbulence; these simulations employed a collisionless MHD model which considered a tensor pressure with uniform anisotropy. In the present work, we extend that analysis to a collisionless MHD model in which the thermal anisotropy develops according to the conservation of the magnetic moment of the thermal particles. We also consider the effect of anisotropy relaxation caused by the micro-scale mirror and firehose instabilities. We show that if the relaxation rate is fast enough to keep the anisotropy limited by the threshold values of the instabilities, the dispersion and power spectrum of the RM maps are indistinguishable from those obtained from collisional MHD. Otherwise, there is a reduction in the dispersion and steepening of the power spectrum of the RM maps (compared to the collisional case). Abstract: This Report summarizes the results of the activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group in the period 2014-2016. The main goal of the working group was to present the state-of-the-art of Higgs physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The first part compiles the most up-to-date predictions of Higgs boson production cross sections and decay branching ratios, parton distribution functions, and off-shell Higgs boson production and interference effects. The second part discusses the recent progress in Higgs effective field theory predictions, followed by the third part on pseudo-observables, simplified template cross section and fiducial cross section measurements, which give the baseline framework for Higgs boson property measurements. The fourth part deals with the beyond the Standard Model predictions of various benchmark scenarios of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, extended scalar sector, Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and exotic Higgs boson decays. This report follows three previous working-group reports: Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002), Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions (CERN-2012-002), and Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 3. Higgs properties (CERN-2013-004). 46. Deciphering the bipolar planetary nebula Abell 14 with 3D ionization and morphological studies

Abstract: Abell 14 is a poorly studied object despite being considered a born again planetary nebula. We performed a detailed study of its 3D morphology and ionization structure using the SHAPE and MOCASSIN codes. We found that Abell 14 is a highly evolved, bipolar nebula with a kinematical age of $\sim$19,400 yr for a distance of 4 kpc. The high He abundance, and N/O ratio indicate a progenitor of 5 $M_{\odot}$ that has experienced the third dredge-up and hot bottom burning phases. The stellar parameters of the central source reveal a star at a highly evolved stage near to the white dwarf cooling track, being inconsistent with the born again scenario. The nebula shows unexpectedly strong [N I] $\lambda 5200$ and [O I] $\lambda 6300$ emission lines indicating possible shock interactions. Abell 14 appears to be a member of a small group of highly evolved, extreme Type-I PNe. The members of this group lie at the lower-left corner of the PNe regime on the [N II]/H$\alpha$ vs. [S II]/H$\alpha$ diagnostic diagram, where shock--excited regions/objects are also placed. The low luminosity of their central stars, in conjunction with the large physical size of the nebulae, result in a very low photo-ionization rate, which can make any contribution of shock interaction easily perceptible, even for small velocities., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures and 4 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: Observations of the intracluster medium (ICM) in galaxy clusters suggest for the presence of turbulence and the magnetic fields existence has been proved through observations of Faraday Rotation and synchrotron emission. The ICM is also known to be filled by a rarefied weakly collisional plasma. In this work we study the possible signatures left on Faraday Rotation maps by collisionless instabilities. For this purpose we use a numerical approach to investigate the dynamics of the turbulence in collisionless plasmas based on an magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) formalism taking into account different levels of pressure anisotropy. We consider models covering the sub/super-Alfv\'enic and trans/supersonic regimes, one of them representing the fiducial conditions corresponding to the ICM. From the simulated models we compute Faraday Rotation maps and analyze several statistical indicators in order to characterize the magnetic field structure and compare the results obtained with the collisionless model to those obtained using standard collisional MHD framework. We find that important imprints of the pressure anisotropy prevails in the magnetic field and also manifest in the associated Faraday Rotation maps which evidence smaller correlation lengths in the collisionless MHD case. These points are remarkably noticeable for the case mimicking the conditions prevailing in ICM. Nevertheless, in this study we have neglected the decrease of pressure anisotropy due to the feedback of the instabilities that naturally arise in collisionless plasmas at small scales. Abstract: Non-thermal emission has been detected in WR-stars for many years at long wavelengths spectral range, in general attributed to synchrotron emission. Two key ingredients are needed to explain such emissions, namely magnetic fields and relativistic particles. Particles can be accelerated to relativistic speeds by Fermi processes at strong shocks. Therefore, strong synchrotron emission is usually attributed to WR binarity. The magnetic field may also be amplified at shocks, however the actual picture of the magnetic field geometry, intensity, and its role on the acceleration of particles at WR binary systems is still unclear. 49. Evidence for a [WR] or WEL-type binary nucleus in the bipolar planetary nebula Vy 1-2

Abstract: We present high-dispersion spectroscopic data of the compact planetary nebula Vy 1-2, where high expansion velocities up to 100 km/s are found in the Ha, [N II] and [O III] emission lines. HST images reveal a bipolar structure. Vy 1-2 displays a bright ring-like structure with a size of 2.4"x3.2" and two faint bipolar lobes in the west-east direction. A faint pair of knots is also found, located almost symmetrically on opposite sides of the nebula at PA=305 degrees. Furthermore, deep low-dispersion spectra are also presented and several emission lines are detected for the first time in this nebula, such as the doublet [Cl III] 5517, 5537 A, [K IV] 6101 A, C II 6461 A, the doublet C IV 5801, 5812 A. By comparison with the solar abundances, we find enhanced N, depleted C and solar O. The central star must have experienced the hot bottom burning (CN-cycle) during the 2nd dredge-up phase, implying a progenitor star of higher than 3 solar masses. The very low C/O and N/O abundance ratios suggest a likely post-common envelope close binary system. A simple spherically symmetric geometry with either a blackbody or a H-deficient stellar atmosphere model is not able to reproduce the ionisation structure of Vy 1-2. The effective temperature and luminosity of its central star indicate a young nebula located at a distance of ~9.7 kpc with an age of ~3500 years. The detection of stellar emission lines, C II 6461 A, the doublet C IV {\lambda}{\lambda} 5801, 5812 A and O III 5592 A, emitted from a H-deficient star, indicates the presence of a late-type Wolf-Rayet or a WEL type central star., Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

50. Fast magnetic field amplification in the early Universe: growth of collisionless plasma instabilities in turbulent media

Abstract: In this work we report a numerical study of the cosmic magnetic field amplification due to collisionless plasma instabilities. The collisionless magnetohydrodynamic equations derived account for the pressure anisotropy that leads, in specific conditions, to the firehose and mirror instabilities. We study the time evolution of seed fields in turbulence under the influence of such instabilities. An approximate analytical time evolution of magnetic field is provided. The numerical simulations and the analytical predictions are compared. We found that i) amplification of magnetic field was efficient in firehose unstable turbulent regimes, but not in the mirror unstable models, ii) the growth rate of the magnetic energy density is much faster than the turbulent dynamo, iii) the efficient amplification occurs at small scales. The analytical prediction for the correlation between the growth timescales with pressure anisotropy ratio is confirmed by the numerical simulations. These results reinforce the idea that pressure anisotropies - driven naturally in a turbulent collisionless medium, e.g. the intergalactic medium -, could efficiently amplify the magnetic field in the early Universe (post-recombination era), previous to the collapse of the first large-scale gravitational structures. This mechanism, though fast for the small scale fields ($\sim$kpc scales), is however unable to provide relatively strong magnetic fields at large scales. Other mechanisms that were not accounted here (e.g., collisional turbulence once instabilities are quenched, velocity shear, or gravitationally induced inflows of gas into galaxies and clusters) could operate afterwards to build up large scale coherent field structures in the long time evolution., Comment: ApJ accepted
