Search

Fully understanding performance is a growing challenge when building next-generation cloud systems. Often these systems build on next-generation hardware, and evaluation in realistic physical testbeds is out of reach. Even when physical testbeds are available, visibility into essential system aspects is a challenge in modern systems where system performance depends on often sub-$\mu s$ interactions between HW and SW components. Existing tools such as performance counters, logging, and distributed tracing provide aggregate or sampled information, but remain insufficient for understanding individual requests in-depth. In this paper, we explore a fundamentally different approach to enable in-depth understanding of cloud system behavior at the software and hardware level, with (almost) arbitrarily fine-grained visibility. Our proposal is to run cloud systems in detailed full-system simulations, configure the simulators to collect detailed events without affecting the system, and finally assemble these events into end-to-end system traces that can be analyzed by existing distributed tracing tools.

The radiative branching ratio of the Hoyle state is crucial to estimate the triple-$\alpha$ reaction rate in stellar environments at medium temperatures. Knowledge of the $\gamma$-decay channel is critical as this is the dominant radiative decay channel for the Hoyle state. A recent study by Kib\'edi et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 182701 (2020)] has challenged our understanding of this astrophysically significant branching ratio and its constraints. The objective of this work was to perform a new measurement of the $\gamma$-decay branching ratio of the Hoyle state to deduce the radiative branching ratio of the Hoyle state. An additional objective was to independently verify aspects of the aforementioned measurement conducted by Kib\'edi et al. For the main experiment of this work, the Hoyle state was populated by the $^{12}\textrm{C}(p,p')$ reaction at 10.8 MeV at the Oslo Cyclotron Laboratory. The $\gamma$-decay branching ratio was deduced through triple-coincidence events, each consisting of a proton ejectile corresponding to the Hoyle state, and the subsequent $\gamma$-ray cascade. In the main experiment of this work, a $\gamma$-decay branching ratio of the Hoyle state of $\Gamma_{\gamma}/\Gamma=4.0(4)\times 10^{-4}$ was determined, yielding a corresponding radiative branching ratio of $\Gamma_{\textrm{rad}}/\Gamma=4.1(4) \times 10^{-4}$, which is in agreement with several recent studies, as well as the previously adopted ENSDF average of $\Gamma_{\textrm{rad}}/\Gamma=4.16(11)\times 10^{-4}$. Aspects of the analysis performed by Kib\'edi et al. were verified in this work and the source of discrepancy between the results of this work and that of Kib\'edi et al. could not be determined. Further independent and innovative studies for the radiative width of the Hoyle state will substantiate whether the discrepant result by Kib\'edi et al. should be excluded from future evaluations.

The nuclear two-photon or double-gamma ($2\gamma$) decay is a second-order electromagnetic process whereby a nucleus in an excited state emits two gamma rays simultaneously. To be able to directly measure the $2\gamma$ decay rate in the low-energy regime below the electron-positron pair-creation threshold, we combined the isochronous mode of a storage ring with Schottky resonant cavities. The newly developed technique can be applied to isomers with excitation energies down to $\sim100$\,keV and half-lives as short as $\sim10$\,ms. The half-life for the $2\gamma$ decay of the first-excited $0^+$ state in bare $^{72}\mathrm{Ge}$ ions was determined to be $23.9\left(6\right)$\,ms, which strongly deviates from expectations., Comment: Submitted to Physical Review Letters, 8 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, 7 equations

The $^{111,112,113}$Sn isotopes have been studied with ($p,d \gamma$), ($p,p^{\prime} \gamma$), and ($d,p \gamma$) reactions to extract the nuclear level densities (NLDs) and $\gamma$-ray strength functions (GSFs) of these nuclei below the neutron separation energy by means of the Oslo method. The experimental NLDs for all three nuclei demonstrate a trend compatible with the constant-temperature model below the neutron separation energy while also being in good agreement with the NLDs of neighboring Sn isotopes, obtained previously with the Oslo-type and neutron evaporation experiments. The extracted microcanonical entropies yield $\approx 1.5$ $k_B$ entropy of a valence neutron in both $^{111}$Sn and $^{113}$Sn. Moreover, the deduced microcanonical temperatures indeed suggest a clear constant-temperature behavior above $\approx$ 3 MeV in $^{111,113}$Sn and above $\approx$ 4.5 MeV in $^{112}$Sn. We observe signatures for the first broken neutron pairs between 2 and 4 MeV in all three nuclei. The GSFs obtained with the Oslo method are found to be in good agreement below the neutron threshold with the strengths of $^{112,114}$Sn extracted in the ($p,p^{\prime}$) Coulomb excitation experiments., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Proton-$\gamma$ coincidences from $(\mathrm{d},\mathrm{p})$ reactions between a $^{66}\mathrm{Ni}$ beam and a deuterated polyethylene target have been analyzed with the inverse-Oslo method to find the nuclear level density (NLD) and $\gamma$-ray strength function ($\gamma$SF) of $^{67}\mathrm{Ni}$. The $^{66}\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{n},\gamma)$ capture cross section has been calculated using the Hauser-Feshbach model in TALYS using the measured NLD and $\gamma$SF as constraints. The results confirm that the $^{66}\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{n},\gamma)$ reaction acts as a bottleneck when relying on one-zone nucleosynthesis calculations. However, the impact of this reaction is strongly damped in multi-zone low-metallicity AGB stellar models experiencing i-process nucleosynthesis., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. C

$\gamma$-ray spectroscopy of fission fragments is a powerful method for studies of nuclear structure properties. Recent results on the spectroscopy of fission fragments, using the combination of the AGATA $\gamma$-ray tracking array and the VAMOS++ large acceptance magnetic spectrometer at GANIL, are reported. A comparison of the performance of the large germanium detector arrays EXOGAM and AGATA illustrates the advances in $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy of fission fragments. Selected results are highlighted for prompt $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy studies, measurements of short lifetimes of excited states with the Recoil Distance Doppler-Shift method, using both AGATA and VAMOS++ and prompt-delayed $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy studies using AGATA, VAMOS++ and EXOGAM.

The $\gamma$-ray strength function and the nuclear level density of $^{167}$Ho have been extracted using the Oslo method from a $^{164}\text{Dy}(\alpha,p\gamma)^{167}$Ho experiment carried out at the Oslo Cyclotron Laboratory. The level density displays a shape that is compatible with %can be approximated with the constant temperature model in the quasicontinuum, while the strength function shows structures indicating the presence of both a scissors and a pygmy dipole resonance. Using our present results as well as data from a previous $^{163}\text{Dy}(\alpha,p\gamma)^{166}$Ho experiment, the $^{165}\text{Ho}(n,\gamma)$ and $^{166}\text{Ho}(n,\gamma)$ MACS uncertainties have been constrained. The possible influence of the low-lying, long-lived 6~keV isomer $^{166}$Ho in the $s$ process is investigated in the context of a 2~$M_\odot$, [Fe/H]=-0.5 AGB star. We show that the newly obtained $^{165}\text{Ho}(n,\gamma)$ MACS affects the final $^{165}$Ho abundance, while the $^{166}\text{Ho}(n,\gamma)$ MACS only impacts the enrichment of $^{166,167}$Er to a limited degree due to the relatively rapid $\beta$ decay of the thermalized $^{166}$Ho at typical $s$-process temperatures., Comment: 11 pages, submitted to Physical Reviews C

In this work, we present new data on the $^{182,183,184}$W($\gamma,n$) cross sections, utilizing a quasi-monochromatic photon beam produced at the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility. Further, we have extracted the nuclear level density and $\gamma$-ray strength function of $^{186}$W from data on the $^{186}$W($\alpha,\alpha^\prime\gamma$)$^{186}$W reaction measured at the Oslo Cyclotron Laboratory. Combining previous measurements on the $^{186}$W($\gamma,n$) cross section with our new $^{182,183,184}$W($\gamma,n$) and ($\alpha,\alpha^\prime\gamma$)$^{186}$W data sets, we have deduced the $^{186}$W $\gamma$-ray strength function in the range of $1 < E_\gamma < 6$ MeV and $7 < E_\gamma < 14$ MeV. Our data are used to extract the level density and $\gamma$-ray strength functions needed as input to the nuclear-reaction code \textsf{TALYS}, providing an indirect, experimental constraint for the $^{185}$W($n,\gamma$)$^{186}$W cross section and reaction rate. Compared to the recommended Maxwellian-averaged cross section (MACS) in the KADoNiS-1.0 data base, our results are on average lower for the relevant energy range $k_B T \in [5,100]$ keV, and we provide a smaller uncertainty for the MACS. The theoretical values of Bao \textit{et al.} and the cross section experimentally constrained on photoneutron data of Sonnabend \textit{et al.} are significantly higher than our result. The lower value by Mohr \textit{et al.} is in very good agreement with our deduced MACS. Our new results could have implications for the $s$-process and in particular the predicted $s$-process production of $^{186,187}$Os nuclei., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures; to be submitted to Phys. Nuclear level densities (NLDs) and $\gamma$-ray strength functions (GSFs) of $^{120,124}$Sn have been extracted with the Oslo method from proton-$\gamma$ coincidences in the ($p,p^{\prime}\gamma)$ reaction. The functional forms of the GSFs and NLDs have been further constrained with the Shape method by studying primary $\gamma$-transitions to the ground and first excited states.The NLDs demonstrate good agreement with the NLDs of $^{116,118,122}$Sn isotopes measured previously. Moreover, the extracted partial NLD of 1$^{-}$ levels in $^{124}$Sn is shown to be in fair agreement with those deduced from spectra of relativistic Coulomb excitation in forward-angle inelastic proton scattering. The experimental NLDs have been applied to estimate the magnitude of the Porter-Thomas (PT) fluctuations. Within the PT fluctuations, we conclude that the GSFs for both isotopes can be considered to be independent of initial and final excitation energies, in accordance with the generalized Brink-Axel hypothesis. Particularly large fluctuations observed in the Shape-method GSFs present a considerable contribution to the uncertainty of the method, and may be one of the reasons for deviations from the Oslo-method strength at low $\gamma$-ray energies and low values of the NLD (below $\approx1\cdot10^{3}-2\cdot10^{3}$ MeV$^{-1}$)., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures

The Kemeny Rank Aggregation (KRA) problem is a well-studied problem in the field of Social Choice with a variety of applications in many different areas like databases and search engines. Intuitively, given a set of votes over a set of candidates, the problem asks to find an aggregated ranking of candidates that minimizes the overall dissatisfaction concerning the votes. Recently, a diverse version of KRA was considered which asks for a sufficiently diverse set of sufficiently good solutions. The framework of diversity of solutions is a young and thriving topic in the field of artificial intelligence. The main idea is to provide the user with not just one, but with a set of different solutions, enabling her to pick a sufficiently good solution that satisfies additional subjective criteria that are hard or impossible to model. In this work, we use a quantum annealer to solve the KRA problem and to compute a representative set of solutions. Quantum annealing is a meta search heuristic that does not only show promising runtime behavior on currently existing prototypes but also samples the solutions space in an inherently different way, making use of quantum effects. We describe how KRA instances can be solved by a quantum annealer and provide an implementation as well as experimental evaluations. As existing quantum annealers are still restricted in their number of qubits, we further implement two different data reduction rules that can split an instance into a set of smaller instances. In our evaluation, we compare classical heuristics that allow to sample multiple solutions such as simulated annealing and local search with quantum annealing performed on a physical quantum annealer. We compare runtime, quality of solution, and diversity of solutions, with and without applying preceding data reduction rules., Comment: 5 figures

In this paper we discuss the notion of research data for the field of mathematics and report on the status quo of research-data management and planning. A number of decentralized approaches are presented and compared to needs and challenges faced in three use cases from different mathematical subdisciplines. We highlight the importance of tailoring research-data management plans to mathematicians' research processes and discuss their usage all along the data life cycle.

Nuclei in the $^{135}$I region have been identified as being a possible bottleneck for the \textit{i} process. Here we present an indirect measurement for the Maxwellian-averaged cross section of $^{126}\text{Sb}(n,\gamma)$. The nuclear level density and the $\gamma$-ray strength function of $^{127}$Sb have been extracted from $^{124}$Sn$(\alpha,p\gamma)^{127}$Sb data using the Oslo method. The level density in the low-excitation-energy region agrees well with known discrete levels, and the higher-excitation-energy region follows an exponential curve compatible with the constant-temperature model. The strength function between $E_\gamma\approx$ 1.5-8.0 MeV presents several features, such as an upbend and a possibly double-peaked pygmy-like structure. None of the theoretical models included in the nuclear reaction code TALYS seem to reproduce the experimental data. The Maxwellian-averaged cross section for the $^{126}$Sb$(n,\gamma)^{127}$Sb reaction has been experimentally constrained by using our level-density and strength-function data as input to TALYS. We observe a good agreement with the JINA REACLIB, TENDL, and BRUSLIB libraries, while the ENDF/B-VIII.0 library predicts a significantly higher rate than our results.

All roads lead to Rome is the core idea of the puzzle game Roma. It is played on an $n \times n$ grid consisting of quadratic cells. Those cells are grouped into boxes of at most four neighboring cells and are either filled, or to be filled, with arrows pointing in cardinal directions. The goal of the game is to fill the empty cells with arrows such that each box contains at most one arrow of each direction and regardless where we start, if we follow the arrows in the cells, we will always end up in the special Roma-cell. In this work, we study the computational complexity of the puzzle game Roma and show that completing a Roma board according to the rules is an \NP-complete task, counting the number of valid completions is #Ptime-complete, and determining the number of preset arrows needed to make the instance \emph{uniquely} solvable is $\Sigma_2^P$-complete. We further show that the problem of completing a given Roma instance on an $n\times n$ board cannot be solved in time $\mathcal{O}\left(2^{{o}(n)}\right)$ under ETH and give a matching dynamic programming algorithm based on the idea of Catalan structures.

We address challenges in variable selection with highly correlated data that are frequently present in finance, economics, but also in complex natural systems as e.g. weather. We develop a robustified version of the knockoff framework, which addresses challenges with high dependence among possibly many influencing factors and strong time correlation. In particular, the repeated subsampling strategy tackles the variability of the knockoffs and the dependency of factors. Simultaneously, we also control the proportion of false discoveries over a grid of all possible values, which mitigates variability of selected factors from ad-hoc choices of a specific false discovery level. In the application for corporate bond recovery rates, we identify new important groups of relevant factors on top of the known standard drivers. But we also show that out-of-sample, the resulting sparse model has similar predictive power to state-of-the-art machine learning models that use the entire set of predictors.

The experimental gamma-ray strength functions (gamma-SFs) of 142,144-151Nd have been studied for gamma-ray energies up to the neutron separation energy. The results represent a unique set of gamma-SFs for an isotopic chain with increasing nuclear deformation. The data reveal how the low-energy enhancement, the scissors mode and the pygmy dipole resonance evolve with nuclear deformation and mass number. The data indicate that the mechanisms behind the low-energy enhancement and the scissors mode are decoupled from each other., Comment: 14 pages and 10 figures

We study the prediction of Value at Risk (VaR) for cryptocurrencies. In contrast to classic assets, returns of cryptocurrencies are often highly volatile and characterized by large fluctuations around single events. Analyzing a comprehensive set of 105 major cryptocurrencies, we show that Generalized Random Forests (GRF) (Athey et al., 2019) adapted to quantile prediction have superior performance over other established methods such as quantile regression, GARCH-type and CAViaR models. This advantage is especially pronounced in unstable times and for classes of highly-volatile cryptocurrencies. Furthermore, we identify important predictors during such times and show their influence on forecasting over time. Moreover, a comprehensive simulation study also indicates that the GRF methodology is at least on par with existing methods in VaR predictions for standard types of financial returns and clearly superior in the cryptocurrency setup.

For instance, in computer algebra it most often takes the form of mathematical documents, notebooks, research-software packages and libraries, computer algebra systems, algorithms, and collections of mathematical objects. Photoplethysmography (PPG) is a non-invasive and economical technique to extract vital signs of the human body. Although it has been widely used in consumer and research grade wrist devices to track a user's physiology, the PPG signal is very sensitive to motion which can corrupt the signal's quality. Existing Motion Artifact (MA) reduction techniques have been developed and evaluated using either synthetic noisy signals or signals collected during high-intensity activities - both of which are difficult to generalize for real-life scenarios. Therefore, it is valuable to collect realistic PPG signals while performing Activities of Daily Living (ADL) to develop practical signal denoising and analysis methods. In this work, we propose an automatic pseudo clean PPG generation process for reliable PPG signal selection. For each noisy PPG segment, the corresponding pseudo clean PPG reduces the MAs and contains rich temporal details depicting cardiac features. Our experimental results show that 71% of the pseudo clean PPG collected from ADL can be considered as high quality segment where the derived MAE of heart rate and respiration rate are 1.46 BPM and 3.93 BrPM, respectively. Therefore, our proposed method can determine the reliability of the raw noisy PPG by considering quality of the corresponding pseudo clean PPG signal.

A staged tree model is a discrete statistical model encoding relationships between events. These models are realised by directed trees with coloured vertices. In algebro-geometric terms, the model consists of points inside a toric variety. For certain trees, called balanced, the model is in fact the intersection of the toric variety and the probability simplex. This gives the model a straightforward description, and has computational advantages. In this paper we show that the class of staged tree models with a toric structure extends far outside of the balanced case, if we allow a change of coordinates. It is an open problem whether all staged tree models have toric structure.

The Nuclear Level Densities (NLDs) and the $\gamma$-ray Strength Functions ($\gamma$SFs) of $^{153,155}$Sm have been extracted from (d,p$\gamma$) coincidences using the Oslo method. The experimental NLD of $^{153}$Sm is higher than the NLD of $^{155}$Sm, in accordance with microscopic calculations. The $\gamma$SFs of $^{153,155}$Sm are in fair agreement with QRPA calculations based on the D1M Gogny interaction. An enhancement is observed in the $\gamma$SF for both $^{153,155}$Sm nuclei around 3 MeV in excitation energy and is attributed to the M1 Scissors Resonance (SR). Their integrated strengths were found to be in the range 1.3 - 2.1 and 4.4 - 6.4 $\mu^{2}_{N}$ for $^{153}$Sm and $^{155}$Sm, respectively. The strength of the SR for $^{155}$Sm is comparable to those for deformed even-even Sm isotopes from nuclear resonance fluorescence measurements, while that of $^{153}$Sm is lower than expected.

The validity of the Brink-Axel hypothesis, which is especially important for numerous astrophysical calculations, is addressed for 116,120,124Sn below the neutron separation energy by means of three independent experimental methods. The $\gamma$-ray strength functions (GSFs) extracted from primary $\gamma$-decay spectra following charged-particle reactions with the Oslo method and with the Shape method demonstrate excellent agreement with those deduced from forward-angle inelastic proton scattering at relativistic beam energies. In addition, the GSFs are shown to be independent of excitation energies and spins of the initial and final states. The results provide a critical test of the generalized Brink-Axel hypothesis in heavy nuclei, demonstrating its applicability in the energy region of the pygmy dipole resonance., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, Phys. Understanding the evolution of level densities in the crossover from spherical to well-deformed nuclei has been a long-standing problem in nuclear physics. We measure nuclear level densities for a chain of neodymium isotopes $^{142,144-151}$Nd which exhibit such a crossover. These results represent to date the most complete data set of nuclear level densities for an isotopic chain between neutron shell-closure and towards mid-shell. We observe a strong increase of the level densities along the chain with an overall increase by a factor of $\approx 170$ at an excitation energy of 7.5 MeV and saturation around mass 150. Level densities calculated by the shell model Monte Carlo (SMMC) are in excellent agreement with these experimental results. Based on our experimental and theoretical findings, we offer an explanation of the observed mass dependence of the level densities in terms of the intrinsic single-particle level density and the collective enhancement., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

The level density of quantum states in statistical mesoscopic systems is a critical input for various fields of physics, including nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics, atomic physics and their applications. In atomic nuclei, the level density is a fundamental measure of their complex structure at relatively high energies. Here we present the first model-independent measurement of the absolute partial nuclear level density for a short-lived unstable nucleus. For this purpose, we introduce the ``Shape method'' to extract the shape of the $\gamma$-ray strength function. Combining the Shape method with the existing $\beta$-Oslo technique allows the extraction of the nuclear level density without the need for theoretical input. We benchmark the Shape method using results for the stable $^{76}$Ge nucleus, finding an excellent agreement to previous experimental results. We apply the Shape method to new experimental data on the short-lived $^{88}$Kr nucleus. Our method opens the door for measurements of the nuclear level density and $\gamma$-ray strength function far away from stability, a pivotal input required to understand the role of exotic nuclei in forming the cosmos.

Staged tree models are a discrete generalization of Bayesian networks. We show that these form curved exponential families and derive their natural parameters, sufficient statistic, and cumulant-generating function as functions of their graphical representation. We give necessary and sufficient graphical criteria for classifying regular subfamilies and discuss implications for model selection.

The Shape method, a novel approach to obtain the functional form of the $\gamma$-ray strength function ($\gamma$SF) in the absence of neutron resonance spacing data, is introduced. When used in connection with the Oslo method the slope of the Nuclear Level Density (NLD) is obtained simultaneously. The foundation of the Shape method lies in the primary $\gamma$-ray transitions which preserve information on the functional form of the $\gamma$SF. The Shape method has been applied to $^{56}$Fe, $^{92}$Zr, $^{164}$Dy, and $^{240}$Pu, which are representative cases for the variety of situations encountered in typical NLD and $\gamma$SF studies. The comparisons of results from the Shape method to those from the Oslo method demonstrate that the functional form of the $\gamma$SF is retained regardless of nuclear structure details or $J^\pi$ values of the states fed by the primary transitions., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

The cascading 3.21 MeV and 4.44 MeV electric quadrupole transitions have been observed from the Hoyle state at 7.65 MeV excitation energy in $^{12}$C, excited by the $^{12}$C(p,p$^{\prime}$) reaction at 10.7 MeV proton energy. From the proton-$\gamma$-$\gamma$ triple coincidence data, a value of ${\Gamma_{\rm rad}}/{\Gamma}=6.2(6) \times 10^{-4}$ was obtained for the radiative branching ratio. Using our results, together with ${\Gamma_{\pi}^{E0}}/{\Gamma}$ from Eriksen et al., Phys. Rev. C 102, 024320 and the currently adopted $\Gamma_{\pi}(E0)$ values, the radiative width of the Hoyle state is determined as $\Gamma_{\rm rad}=5.1(6) \times 10^{-3}$ eV. This value is about 34% higher than the currently adopted value and will impact on models of stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

The new Oslo Scintillator Array (OSCAR) has been commissioned at the Oslo Cyclotron Laboratory (OCL). It consists of 30 large volume (diameter 3.5 x 8 inches) LaBr$_3$(Ce) detectors that are used for $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy. The response functions for incident $\gamma$-rays up to 20 MeV are simulated with $\texttt{Geant4}$. In addition, the resolution, and the total and full-energy peak efficiencies are extracted. We use official data for all 16 federal German states to study the causal effect of a flat 1000 Euro state-dependent university tuition fee on the enrollment behavior of students during the years 2006-2014. In particular, we show how the variation in the introduction scheme across states and times can be exploited to identify the federal average causal effect of tuition fees by controlling for a large amount of potentially influencing attributes for state heterogeneity. We suggest a stability post-double selection methodology to robustly determine the causal effect across types in the transparently modeled unknown response components. The proposed stability resampling scheme in the two LASSO selection steps efficiently mitigates the risk of model underspecification and thus biased effects when the tuition fee policy decision also depends on relevant variables for the state enrollment rates. Correct inference for the full cross-section state population in the sample requires adequate design -- rather than sampling-based standard errors. With the data-driven model selection and explicit control for spatial cross-effects we detect that tuition fees induce substantial migration effects where the mobility occurs both from fee but also from non-fee states suggesting also a general movement for quality. Overall, we find a significant negative impact of up to 4.5 percentage points of fees on student enrollment. This is in contrast to plain one-step LASSO or previous empirical studies with full fixed effects linear panel regressions which generally underestimate the size and get an only insignificant effect.

The Oslo Method has been applied to particle-$\gamma$ coincidences following the $^{239}\mathrm{Pu}$(d,p) reaction to obtain the nuclear level density (NLD) and $\gamma$-ray strength function ($\gamma$SF) of $^{240}\mathrm{Pu}$. The experiment was conducted with a 12 MeV deuteron beam at the Oslo Cyclotron Laboratory. The low spin transfer of this reaction leads to a spin-parity mismatch between populated and intrinsic levels. This is a challenge for the Oslo Method as it can have a significant impact on the extracted NLD and $\gamma$SF. We have developed an iterative approach to ensure consistent results even for cases with a large spin-parity mismatch, in which we couple Green's Function Transfer calculations of the spin-parity dependent population cross-section to the nuclear decay code RAINIER. The resulting $\gamma$SF shows a pronounced enhancement between 2-4 MeV that is consistent with the location of the low-energy orbital $M1$ scissors mode.

In this paper we present the first systematic analysis of the impact of the populated vs. intrinsic spin distribution on the nuclear level density and $\gamma$-ray strength function retrieved through the Oslo Method. We illustrate the effect of the spin distribution on the recently performed $^{239}\mathrm{Pu}$(d,p$\gamma$)$^{240}\mathrm{Pu}$ experiment using a 12 MeV deuteron beam performed at the Oslo Cyclotron Lab. In the analysis we couple state-of-the-art calculations for the populated spin-distributions with the Monte-Carlo nuclear decay code RAINIER to compare Oslo Method results to the known input. We find that good knowledge of the populated spin distribution is crucial and show that the populated distribution has a significant impact on the extracted nuclear level density and $\gamma$-ray strength function for the $^{239}\mathrm{Pu}$(d,p$\gamma$)$^{240}\mathrm{Pu}$ case., Comment: Presented at the 6th International Workshop on Compound-Nuclear Reactions and Related Topics

The lifetimes of first excited 2$^+$, 4$^+$ and 6$^+$ states in $^{98}$Zr were measured with the Recoil-Distance Doppler Shift method in an experiment performed at GANIL. Excited states in $^{98}$Zr were populated using the fission reaction between a 6.2 MeV/u $^{238}$U beam and a $^{9}$Be target. The $\gamma$ rays were detected with the EXOGAM array in correlation with the fission fragments identified in mass and atomic number in the VAMOS++ spectrometer. Our result shows very small B(E2;2$_1^+$ $\rightarrow$ 0$_1^+$) value in $^{98}$Zr thereby confirming the very sudden onset of collectivity at $N=60$. The experimental results are compared to large-scale Monte Carlo Shell model and beyond mean field calculations. The present results indicate coexistence of two additional deformed shapes in this nucleus along with the spherical ground state.

We introduce a new method, (Doppler Velocity Reconstruction or DoVeR), for reconstructing two-component velocity fields from color Doppler scans. DoVeR employs the streamfunction-vorticity equation, which satisfies mass conservation while accurately approximating the flow rate of rotation. We validated DoVeR using artificial color Doppler images generated from computational fluid dynamics models of left ventricle (LV) flow. We compare DoVeR against the conventional intraventricular Vector Flow Mapping (iVFM1D) and reformulated iVFM (iVFM2D). LV model error analysis showed DoVeR is more robust to noise and probe placement, with noise RMS errors (nRMSE) between 3.81%-6.67%, while the iVFM methods delivered 4.16%-24.17% for iVFM1D and 4.06%-400.21% for iVFM2D. We test the DoVeR and iVFM methods using in-vivo mouse-LV ultrasound scans. DoVeR yielded more hemodynamically accurate reconstructions, suggesting that it can provide a more reliable approach for robust quantification of cardiac flow., Comment: 32 Pages, 6 Figures

The nuclear level density and $\gamma$-decay strength of $^{192}$Os have been extracted using particle-$\gamma$ coincidence data from the $^{192}$Os($\alpha,\alpha^\prime\gamma$)$^{192}$Os reaction by means of the Oslo method. The level density is found to be a rather smooth function of excitation energy, approximately following the constant temperature model. The $\gamma$-decay strength is compared to photoneutron cross-section data above the neutron separation energy, and to $E1$ and $M1$ strengths for nuclei in this mass region derived from primary transitions following neutron capture. Our results are in good agreement with these previous data and draw a consistent picture of the $\gamma$-strength function in the range $E_\gamma \approx 1.5-6 $ MeV. Using the measured nuclear level density and $\gamma$-decay strength as input to the nuclear-reaction code TALYS, we provide the first experimentally constrained Maxwellian-averaged cross section (MACS) for the $^{191}$Os($n,\gamma$)$^{192}$Os reaction relevant to $s$-process nucleosynthesis. The systematic uncertainties introduced by the normalization procedure of the level density and $\gamma$-strength function were investigated and propagated to the calculated Maxwellian-averaged cross section. The obtained result of the Maxwellian-averaged cross section at $k_BT=30$ keV, $\langle \sigma \rangle_{n,\gamma}=1134\pm 375$ mb, is in very good agreement with the theoretical estimate provided by the KADoNiS project, giving experimental support to the adopted KADoNiS value. The accuracy of probability distributions inferred using machine-learning algorithms heavily depends on data availability and quality. In practical applications it is therefore fundamental to investigate the robustness of a statistical model to misspecification of some of its underlying probabilities. In the context of graphical models, investigations of robustness fall under the notion of sensitivity analyses. These analyses consist in varying some of the model's probabilities or parameters and then assessing how far apart the original and the varied distributions are. However, for Gaussian graphical models, such variations usually make the original graph an incoherent representation of the model's conditional independence structure. Here we develop an approach to sensitivity analysis which guarantees the original graph remains valid after any probability variation and we quantify the effect of such variations using different measures. To achieve this we take advantage of algebraic techniques to both concisely represent conditional independence and to provide a straightforward way of checking the validity of such relationships. Our methods are demonstrated to be robust and comparable to standard ones, which break the conditional independence structure of the model, using an artificial example and a medical real-world application.

The $\gamma$-ray strength function ($\gamma$SF) and nuclear level density (NLD) have been extracted for the first time from inverse kinematic reactions with the Oslo Method. This novel technique allows measurements of these properties across a wide range of previously inaccessible nuclei. Proton-$\gamma$ coincidence events from the $\mathrm{d}(^{86}\mathrm{Kr}, \mathrm{p}\gamma)^{87}\mathrm{Kr}$ reaction were measured at iThemba LABS and the $\gamma$SF and NLD in $^{87}\mathrm{Kr}$ obtained. The low-energy region of the $\gamma$SF is compared to Shell Model calculations which suggest this region to be dominated by M1 strength. The $\gamma$SF and NLD are used as input parameters to Hauser-Feshbach calculations to constrain $(\mathrm{n},\gamma)$ cross sections of nuclei using the TALYS reaction code. Photoneutron cross sections were measured for $^{58}$Ni, $^{60}$Ni, $^{61}$Ni, and $^{64}$Ni at energies between the one-neutron and two-neutron thresholds using quasi-monochromatic $\gamma$-ray beams produced in laser Compton-scattering at the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility. The new photoneutron data are used to extract the $\gamma$-ray strength function above the neutron threshold complementing the information obtained by the Oslo method below the threshold. We discuss radiative neutron capture cross sections and the Maxwellian-averaged cross sections for Ni isotopes including $^{63}$Ni, a branching point nucleus along the weak s-process path. The cross sections are calculated with the experimentally constrained $\gamma$-ray strength functions from the Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov plus quasi-particle-random phase approximation based on the Gogny D1M interaction for both $E1$ and $M1$ components and supplemented with the $M1$ upbend., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, re-submitted to PRC

In this work, we present new data on the $^{89}$Y($\gamma$,n) cross section studied with a quasi-monochromatic photon beam produced at the NewSUBARU synchrotron radiation facility in Japan contributing torwards resolving a long standing discrepancy between existing measurements of this cross section. Results for $\gamma$-ray strength function below threshold obtained by applying the Oslo method to $^{89}$Y($p,p'\gamma$)$^{89}$Y coincidences combined with the $^{89}$Y($\gamma$,n) data this providing experimental data for the $\gamma$-ray strength function of $^{89}$Y for $\gamma$ energies in the range of $\approx 1.6$ Mev to $\approx$ 20 MeV. A low-energy enhancement is seen for $\gamma$-rays below $\approx 2.5$ MeV. Shell-model calculations indicate that this feature is caused by strong, low-energy $M1$ transitions at high excitation energies. The nuclear level density and $\gamma$-ray strength function have been extracted from $^{89}$Y($d,p \gamma$)$^{90}$Y coincidences using the Oslo method. Using the ($\gamma,n$) and ($d,p\gamma$) data as experimental constraints, we have calculated the $^{89}$Y($n,\gamma$)$^{90}$Y cross section with the TALYS reaction code. Our results have been compared with directly measured (n,$\gamma$) cross sections and evaluations. Nuclear level densities and $\gamma$-ray strength functions have been extracted for $^{59, 60}\rm{Ni}$, using the Oslo method on data sets from the $^{60}$Ni($^{3}$He,$^{3}$He$^{\prime}\gamma$)$^{60}$Ni and $^{60}$Ni($^{3}$He,$\alpha\gamma$)$^{59}$Ni reactions. Above the neutron separation energy, S$_n$, we have measured the $\gamma$-ray strength functions for $^{61}$Ni and $^{60}$Ni in photoneutron experiments. The low-energy part of the $^{59,60}$Ni $\gamma$-ray strength functions show an increase for decreasing $\gamma$ energies. The experimental $\gamma$-ray strength functions are compared with $M1$ $\gamma$-ray strength functions calculated within the shell model. The $E1$ $\gamma$-ray strength function of $^{60}$Ni has been calculated using the QTBA framework. The QTBA calculations describe the data above $E_{\gamma}\approx$ 7 MeV, while the shell-model calculations agree qualitatively with the low energy part of the $\gamma$-ray strength function. Hence, we give a plausible explanation of the observed shape of the $\gamma$-decay strength.

Statistical $\gamma$-decay from highly excited states is determined by the nuclear level density (NLD) and the $\gamma$-ray strength function ($\gamma$SF). These average quantities have been measured for several nuclei using the Oslo method. For the first time, we exploit the NLD and $\gamma$SF to evaluate the $\gamma$-width in the energy region below the neutron binding energy, often called the quasi-continuum region. The lifetimes of states in the quasi-continuum are important benchmarks for a theoretical description of nuclear structure and dynamics at high temperature. Coloured probability tree models are statistical models coding conditional independence between events depicted in a tree graph. They are more general than the very important class of context-specific Bayesian networks. In this paper, we study the algebraic properties of their ideal of model invariants. The generators of this ideal can be easily read from the tree graph and have a straightforward interpretation in terms of the underlying model: they are differences of odds ratios coming from conditional probabilities. One of the key findings in this analysis is that the tree is a convenient tool for understanding the exact algebraic way in which the sum-to-1 conditions on the parameter space translate into the sum-to-one conditions on the joint probabilities of the statistical model. This enables us to identify necessary and sufficient graphical conditions for a staged tree model to be a toric variety intersected with a probability simplex., Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures

A model-independent technique was used to determine the $\gamma$-ray Strength Function ($\gamma$SF) of $^{56}$Fe down to $\gamma$-ray energies less than 1 MeV for the first time with GRETINA using the $(p,p')$ reaction at 16 MeV. No difference was observed in the energy dependence of the $\gamma$SF built on $2^{+}$ and $4^{+}$ final states, supporting the Brink hypothesis. In addition, angular distribution and polarization measurements were performed. The angular distributions are consistent with dipole radiation. The polarization results show a small bias towards magnetic character in the region of the enhancement.

$^{111}$Ag and $^{113}$Ag were produced in induced fission reaction, where yrast and near-yrast states were populated. To interpret the new data the Interacting Boson-Fermion model was used. A good agreement with the experimental data is achieved, suggesting that the two Ag nuclei have a well developed collectivity, superimposed on $\pi g_{9/2}^{-3}$ excitations previously observed throughout the entire isotopic chain.

Prompt fission $\gamma$-rays are responsible for approximately 5\% of the total energy released in fission, and therefore important to understand when modelling nuclear reactors. In this work we present prompt $\gamma$-ray emission characteristics in fission, for the first time as a function of the nuclear excitation energy of the fissioning system. Emitted $\gamma$-ray spectra were measured, and $\gamma$-ray multiplicities and average and total $\gamma$ energies per fission were determined for the $^{233}$U(d,pf) reaction for excitation energies between 4.8 and 10 MeV, and for the $^{239}$Pu(d,pf) reaction between 4.5 and 9 MeV. The spectral characteristics show no significant change as a function of excitation energy above the fission barrier, despite the fact that an extra $\sim$5 MeV of energy is potentially available in the excited fragments for $\gamma$-decay. The measured results are compared to model calculations made for prompt $\gamma$-ray emission with the fission model code GEF. Further comparison with previously obtained results from thermal neutron induced fission is made to characterize possible differences arising from using the surrogate (d,p) reaction.

Nuclear level densities (NLDs) and $\gamma$-ray strength functions ($\gamma$SFs) have been extracted from particle-$\gamma$ coincidences of the $^{92}$Zr($p,p' \gamma$)$^{92}$Zr and $^{92}$Zr($p,d \gamma$)$^{91}$Zr reactions using the Oslo method. The new $^{91,92}$Zr $\gamma$SF data, combined with photonuclear cross sections, cover the whole energy range from $E_{\gamma} \approx 1.5$~MeV up to the giant dipole resonance at $E_{\gamma} \approx 17$~MeV. The wide-range $\gamma$SF data display structures at $E_{\gamma} \approx 9.5$~MeV, compatible with a superposition of the spin-flip $M1$ resonance and a pygmy $E1$ resonance. Furthermore, the $\gamma$SF shows a minimum at $E_{\gamma} \approx 2-3$~MeV and an increase at lower $\gamma$-ray energies. The experimentally constrained NLDs and $\gamma$SFs are shown to reproduce known ($n, \gamma$) and Maxwellian-averaged cross sections for $^{91,92}$Zr using the {\sf TALYS} reaction code, thus serving as a benchmark for this indirect method of estimating ($n, \gamma$) cross sections for Zr isotopes., Comment: 10 pages and 9 figures

Discrete statistical models supported on labelled event trees can be specified using so-called interpolating polynomials which are generalizations of generating functions. These admit a nested representation. A new algorithm exploits the primary decomposition of monomial ideals associated with an interpolating polynomial to quickly compute all nested representations of that polynomial. It hereby determines an important subclass of all trees representing the same statistical model. Standard neuroimaging data analysis based on traditional principles of experimental design, modelling, and statistical inference is increasingly complemented by novel analysis methods, driven e.g. by machine learning methods. While these novel approaches provide new insights into neuroimaging data, they often have unexpected properties, generating a growing literature on possible pitfalls. We propose to meet this challenge by adopting a habit of systematic testing of experimental design, analysis procedures, and statistical inference. Specifically, we suggest to apply the analysis method used for experimental data also to aspects of the experimental design, simulated confounds, simulated null data, and control data. We stress the importance of keeping the analysis method the same in main and test analyses, because only this way possible confounds and unexpected properties can be reliably detected and avoided. We describe and discuss this Same Analysis Approach in detail, and demonstrate it in two worked examples using multivariate decoding. With these examples, we reveal two sources of error: A mismatch between counterbalancing (crossover designs) and cross-validation which leads to systematic below-chance accuracies, and linear decoding of a nonlinear effect, a difference in variance. Experimental results of the $^{237}$Np($d, p \gamma)^{238}$Np reaction are presented, which verifies the generalized Brink-Axel (gBA) hypothesis for $\gamma$ transitions between states in the quasi-continuum. The gBA hypothesis holds not only for specific collective resonances, but for the full dipole strength below the neutron separation energy. We discuss the validity of the gBA hypothesis also for lighter systems like $^{92}$Zr where the concept of a unique $\gamma$-ray strength function ($\gamma$SF) is problematic due to large Porter-Thomas fluctuations. The nuclear level densities and $\gamma$-ray strength functions of $^{138,139,140}$La were measured using the $^{139}$La($^{3}$He, $\alpha$), $^{139}$La($^{3}$He, $^{3}$He$^\prime$) and $^{139}$La(d, p) reactions. The particle-$\gamma$ coincidences were recorded with the silicon particle telescope (SiRi) and NaI(Tl) (CACTUS) arrays. In the context of these experimental results, the low-energy enhancement in the A$\sim$140 region is discussed. The $^{137,138,139}$La($n, \gamma)$ cross sections were calculated at $s$- and $p$-process temperatures using the experimentally measured nuclear level densities and $\gamma$-ray strength functions. Good agreement is found between $^{139}$La($n, \gamma)$ calculated cross sections and previous measurements.

Nuclear level densities and $\gamma$-ray strength functions of $^{56,57}$Fe have been extracted from proton-$\gamma$ coincidences. A low-energy enhancement in the $\gamma$-ray strength functions up to a factor of 30 over common theoretical E1 models is confirmed. Angular distributions of the low-energy enhancement in $^{57}$Fe indicate its dipole nature, in agreement with findings for $^{56}$Fe. The high statistics and the excellent energy resolution of the large-volume LaBr$_{3}$(Ce) detectors allowed for a thorough analysis of $\gamma$ strength as function of excitation energy. One of the greatest questions for modern physics to address is how elements heavier than iron are created in extreme, astrophysical environments. A particularly challenging part of that question is the creation of the so-called p-nuclei, which are believed to be mainly produced in some types of supernovae. The lack of needed nuclear data presents an obstacle in nailing down the precise site and astrophysical conditions. In this work, we present for the first time measurements on the nuclear level density and average strength function of $^{92}$Mo. State-of-the-art p-process calculations systematically underestimate the observed solar abundance of this isotope. Our data provide stringent constraints on the $^{91}$Nb$(p,{\gamma})^{92}$Mo reaction rate, which is the last unmeasured reaction in the nucleosynthesis puzzle of $^{92}$Mo. Based on our results, we conclude that the $^{92}$Mo abundance anomaly is not due to the nuclear physics input to astrophysical model calculations., Comment: Submitted to PRC
