The large growth of flash ADC techniques for processing signals, especially in applications of streaming data, raises issues such as data flow through an acquisition system, long-term storage, and greater complexity in data analysis. In addition, experiments that push the limits of sensitivity need to distinguish legitimate signals from noise. The use of correlation coefficients is examined to address these issues. They are found to be quite successful well into the noise region. The methods can also be extended to Field Programmable Gate Array modules for compressing the data flow and greatly enhancing the event rate capabilities., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures

A high-resolution neutron spectroscopic technique is used to measure momentum-resolved magnon lifetimes in the prototypical two- and three-dimensional antiferromagnets Rb2MnF4 and MnF2, over the full Brillouin zone and a wide range of temperatures. We rederived theories of the lifetime resulting from magnon-magnon scattering, thereby broadening their applicability beyond asymptotically small regions of wavevector and temperature. Corresponding computations, combined with a small contribution reflecting collisions with domain boundaries, yield excellent quantitative agreement with the data., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Azurite, a natural mineral made up of CuO chains, is also an intriguing spin-1/2 quantum magnet. There has been much debate as to the 1-dimensional (1D) nature of this material by theorists and experimentalists alike. The focus of this debate lies in the interactions between Cu-ions within the antiferromagnetically ordered state below 1.9 K. We present high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering data which highlight the complexity of the magnetic ground state of azurite. The application of magnetic fields and temperatures were used to probe the excitations revealing important information about the dynamics in this system. From this we are able to conclude that the 1D Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin chain model is not sufficient to describe the dynamics in azurite. Instead additional coupling including interchain interactions and an anisotropic staggered field are necessary to fully model the observed excitations., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures

Here we present neutron diffraction results on the mineral azurite. We have found that the crystal structure of azurite can be described in the space group $P2_1$ which is the next lower symmetric group of $P2_1/c$ as found in earlier work. This small change in symmetry does not greatly influence the lattice parameters or atomic fractional coordinates which are presented here for single crystal diffraction refinements. The ordered magnetic moment structure of this material has been determined and is comprised of two inequivalent magnetic moments on copper sites of magnitude 0.68(1) and 0.25(1) $\mu_{B}$. This result is discussed in terms of the anisotropic exchange and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. It is found that the system is likely governed by one-dimensional behaviour despite the long-range ordered ground state. Azurite, Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2, has been considered an ideal example of a one-dimensional (1D) diamond chain antiferromagnet. Early studies of this material imply the presence of an ordered antiferromagnetic phase below $T_N \sim 1.9$ K while magnetization measurements have revealed a 1/3 magnetization plateau. Until now, no corroborating neutron scattering results have been published to confirm the ordered magnetic moment structure. We present recent neutron diffraction results which reveal the presence of commensurate magnetic order in azurite which coexists with significant magnetoelastic strain. The latter of these effects may indicate the presence of spin frustration in zero applied magnetic field. A natural solution to the fermion mass hierarchy problem suggests the existence of a partially conserved chiral symmetry. We show that this can lead to a reasonably natural solution to the solar and atmospheric neutrino problems without fine-tuning or the addition of new low energy fermions. The atmospheric neutrino atmospheric neutrino anomaly is given by large mixing between $\nu_{\mu}$ and $\nu_{\tau}$, with $\Delta m^2_{atm} \sim 10^{-3} \eV^2$, and the solar neutrino deficit is due to nearly maximal electron neutrino vacuum oscillations. We present an explicit model for the neutrino masses which is an anomaly free Abelian extension of the standard model that also yields a realistic charged fermion spectrum., Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures. We describe the Anti-Grand Unification Model (AGUT) and the Multiple Point Principle (MPP) used to calculate the values of the Standard Model gauge coupling constants in the theory, from the requirement of the existence of degenerate vacua. The application of the MPP to the pure Standard Model predicts the existence of a second minimum of the Higgs potential close to the cut-off, which we take to be the Planck scale, giving our Standard Model predictions for the top quark and Higgs masses: $M_t = 173 \pm 5$ GeV and $M_H = 135 \pm 9$ GeV. We also discuss mass protection by chiral charges and present a fit to the charged fermion mass spectrum using the chiral quantum numbers of the maximal AGUT gauge group $SMG^3 \times U(1)_f$, where $SMG \equiv SU(3) \times SU(2) \times U(1)$. The combined requirements, of (i) a natural solution to the fermion mass hierarchy problem and (ii) an explanation of both the atmospheric and solar neutrino problems, lead to an essentially unique picture of neutrino masses and mixing angles. The electron and muon neutrinos are quasi-degenerate in mass with maximal mixing, giving $\nu_e - \nu_{\mu}$ vacuum oscillations. The overall neutrino mass scale is set by the atmospheric neutrino requirement $\Delta m^2 \sim 10^{-2}$ eV$^2$, implying a mass for $\nu_e$ and $\nu_{\mu}$ of order 1 eV in models with a natural mass hierarchy, whilst the tau neutrino is expected to be much lighter than this and only weakly mixed. The fermion masses and mixing angles are fitted using only 3 free parameters in a non-supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, with new approximately conserved chiral gauge quantum numbers broken by a set of Higgs fields. The fundamental mass scale of this anti-grand unification model is given by the Planck mass. We also calculate neutrino mixing angles and masses, as well as CP violation from the CKM matrix. A good fit is obtained to the observed fermion masses but our predictions of the neutrino masses are too small to lead to any observable neutrino oscillation effects claimed today, without introducing another mass scale. A titanium-water heat pipe radiator having an innovative proprietary evaporator configuration was evaluated in a large vacuum chamber equipped with liquid nitrogen cooled cold walls. The radiator was manufactured by Advanced Cooling Technologies, Inc. (ACT), Lancaster, PA, and delivered as part of a Small Business Innovative Research effort. The radiator panel consisted of five titanium-water heat pipes operating as thermosyphons, sandwiched between two polymer matrix composite face sheets. The five variable conductance heat pipes were purposely charged with a small amount of non-condensable gas to control heat flow through the condenser. Heat rejection was evaluated over a wide range of inlet water temperature and flow conditions, and heat rejection was calculated in real-time utilizing a data acquisition system programmed with the Stefan-Boltzmann equation. Thermography through an infra-red transparent window identified heat flow across the panel. Under nominal operation, a maximum heat rejection value of over 2200 Watts was identified. The thermal vacuum evaluation of heat rejection provided critical information on understanding the radiator s performance, and in steady state and transient scenarios provided useful information for validating current thermal models in support of the Fission Power Systems Project.

The human genome project is expected to determine the complete sequence of all human genes, and the genomes of several other organisms are already completely sequenced.

Total solar irradiance measurements from the 1984-1993 Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS) active cavity radiometer and 1978-1993 Nimbus 7 transfer cavity radiometer spacecraft experiments are analyzed to detect the presence of 11-, 22-, and 80-year irradiance variability components. The analyses confirmed the existence of a significant 11-year irradiance variability component, associated with solar magnetic activity and the sunspot cycle. The analyses also suggest the presence of a 22- or 80-year variability component. The earlier Nimbus 7 and Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) spacecraft irradiance measurements decreased approximately 1.2 and 1.3 W/sq m, respectively, between 1980 and 1986. The Nimbus 7 values increased 1.2 W/sq m between 1986 and 1989. The ERBS irradiance measurements increased 1.3 W/sq m during 1986-1989, and then decreased 0.4 W/sq m (at an annual rate of 0.14 W/sq. m/yr) during 1990-1993. Considering the correlations between ERBS, Nimbus 7, and SMM irradiance trends and solar magnetic activity, the total solar irradiance should decrease to minimum levels by 1997 as solar activity decreases to minimum levels, and then increase to maximum levels by the year 2000 as solar activity rises. The ERBS measurements yielded 165.4 +/- 0.7 W/sq m as the mean irradiance value with measurement accuracies and precisions of 0.2% and 0.02%, respectively. The ERBS mean irradiance value is within 0.2% of the 1367.4, 1365.9, and 1366.9 W/sq m mean values for the SMM, Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS), and Space Shuttle Atmospheric Laboratory for Applications and Science (ATLAS 1) Solar Constant (SOLCON) active cavity radiometer spacecraft experiments, respectively. The Nimbus 7 measurements yielded 1372.1 W/sq m as the mean value with a measurement accuracy of 0.5%. Empirical irradiance model fits, based upon 10.7 -cm solar radio flux (F10) and photometric sunspot index (PSI), were used to assess the quality of the ERBS, Numbus 7, SMM, and the UARS irradiance data sets and to identify irradiance variability trends which may be caused by drifts or shifts in the spacecraft sensor responses. Comparisons among the fits and measured irradiances indicate that the Nimbus 7 radiometer response shifted by a total of 0.8 W/sq m between September 1989 and April 1990 and that the ERBS and UARS radiometers each drifted approximately 0.5 W/sq m during the first 5 months in orbit.

This document contains a compendium of the ground and in-flight scanner and non-scanner offsets and count conversion (gain) coefficients used for the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) production processing of data from the ERBS satellite for the period from 1 January 1987 to 31 December 1989; for the NOAA-9 satellite, for the month of January 1987; and for the NOAA-10 satellite, for the period from 1 January 1987 to 31 May 1989.

During 1990-1992, pyrheliometric measurements from the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS) indicate that the total solar irradiance is decreasing at an annual rate of -0.2 Wm exp -2 with declining solar magnetic activity. Regression analyses of spacecraft irradiance measurements and of solar magnetic activity indices (10.7-cm solar radio flux and photometric sunspot index) verified the ERBS decreasing trend. The decreasing rate suggests that the irradiance should decrease 0.1 percent by 1997 when minimum solar magnetic activity is forecasted. If the forecasted 1990-1997 irradiance decrease is equal in magnitude to the magnitude of the 1986-1989 irradiance rise, one could conclude that solar irradiance variability has a strong 11-year component and no significant 22-year component. The ERBS measurements yielded 1365.4 +/- 0.7 Wm exp -2 as the mean irradiance value. In this paper, 1981-1992 spacecraft irradiance measurements are presented and compared with solar indices.

The Carbotek/Shimizu process to produce oxygen from lunar soils has been successfully demonstrated on actual lunar samples in laboratory facilities at Carbotek with Shimizu funding and support. Apollo sample 70035 containing approximately 25 percent ilmenite (FeTiO3) was used in seven separate reactions with hydrogen varying temperature and pressure: FeTiO3 + H2 yields Fe + TiO2 + H2O. The experiments gave extremely encouraging results as all ilmenite was reduced in every experiment. The lunar ilmenite was found to be about twice as reactive as terrestrial ilmenite samples. Analytical techniques of the lunar and terrestrial ilmenite experiments performed by NASA Johnson Space Center include iron Mossbauer spectroscopy (FeMS), optical microscopy, SEM, TEM, and XRD. The Energy and Environmental Research Center at the University of North Dakota performed three SEM techniques (point count method, morphology determination, elemental mapping), XRD, and optical microscopy.

The first set of hydrogen reduction experiments to use actual lunar material was recently completed. The sample, 70035, is a coarse-grained vesicular basalt containing 18.46 wt. percent FeO and 12.97 wt. percent TiO2. The mineralogy includes pyroxene, ilmenite, plagioclase, and minor olivine. The sample was crushed to a grain size of less than 500 microns. The crushed basalt was reduced with hydrogen in seven tests at temperatures of 900-1050 C and pressures of 1-10 atm for 30-60 minutes. A capacitance probe, measuring the dew point of the gas stream, was used to follow reaction progress. Experiments were also conducted using a terrestrial basalt similar to some lunar mare samples. Minnesota Lunar Simulant (MLS-1) contains 13.29 wt. percent FeO, 2.96 wt. percent Fe2O3, and 6.56 wt. percent TiO2. The major minerals include plagioclase, pyroxene, olivine, ilmenite, and magnetite. The rock was ground and seived, and experiments were run on the less than 74- and 500-1168-micron fractions. Experiments were also conducted on less than 74-micron powders of olivine, pyroxene, synthetic ilmenite, and TiO2. The terrestrial rock and mineral samples were reduced with flowing hydrogen at 1100 C in a microbalance furnace, with reaction progress monitored by weight loss. Experiments were run at atmospheric pressure for durations of 3-4 hr. Solid samples from both sets of experiments were analyzed by Mossbauer spectroscopy, petrographic microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, tunneling electron microscopy, and x-ray diffraction. Apollo 17 soil 78221 was examined for evidence of natural reduction in the lunar environment. This sample was chosen based on its high maturity level (I sub s/FeO = 93.0). The FeO content is 11.68 wt. percent and the TiO2 content is 3.84 wt. percent. A polished thin section of the 90-150 micron size fraction was analyzed by petrographic microscopy and scanning electron microscopy.

The mirror attenuator mosaic (MAM), a solar diffuser plate, was used for the flight calibration of the broadband shortwave (0.2-5-microns) and total (0.2 to greater than 200-microns) Earth Radiation Budget Experiment scanning thermistor bolometer radiometers. The MAM solar-reflecting surface consisted of a tightly packed array of vacuum-deposited aluminum, concave spherical mirrors, while its solar-absorbing surface consisted of black chrome. The effective reflectance of the MAM was constant to within +/- 2 percent after almost 2 years in orbit, a marked improvement over earlier solar diffusers.

Long-term changes in the mean global atmospheric temperature and the total solar irradiance were examined utilizing 1979-1989 spacecraft measurements. Outgoing longwave radiation at the top of the atmosphere was employed to infer global atmospheric temperatures. Evidence was determined that indicates the global temperatures should decline in the 1990-1997 period as the magnitude of the incoming solar irradiance declines with decreasing solar magnetic activity.

First-order assessment of lunar soil as a resource includes measurement of its mineralogy and maturity. Soils in which the mineral ilmenite is present in high concentrations are desirable feedstock for the production of oxygen at a lunar base. The maturity of lunar soils is a measure of their relative residence time in the upper 1 mm of the lunar surface. Increasing maturity implies increasing load of solar wind species (e.g., N, H, and He-3), decreasing mean grain size, and increasing glass content. All these physicochemical properties that vary in a regular way with maturity are important parameters for assessing lunar soil as a resource. For example, He-3 can be extracted and potentially used for nuclear fusion. A commonly used index for lunar soil maturity is I(sub s)/FeO, which is the concentration of fine-grained metal determined by ferromagnetic resonance (I(sub s)) normalized to the total iron content (as FeO). I(sub s)/FeO has been measured for virtually every soil returned by the Apollo and Luna missions to the Moon. Because the technique is sensitive to both oxidation state and mineralogy, iron Moessbauer spectroscopy (FeMS) is a viable technique for in situ lunar resource assessment. Its utility for mineralogy is apparent from examination of published FeMS data for lunar samples. From the data published, it can be inferred that FeMS data can also be used to determine soil maturity. The use of FeMS to determine mineralogy and maturity and progress on development of a FeMS instrument for lunar surface use are discussed.

The Solar Constant (SOLCON) Experiment, the objective of which is to determine the solar constant value and its variability, is scheduled for launch as part of the Space Shuttle/Atmospheric Laboratory for Application and Science (ATLAS) spacelab mission. The Ground Support Equipment (GSE) software was developed to monitor and analyze the SOLCON telemetry data during flight and to test the instrument on the ground. The design and development of the GSE software are discussed. The SOLCON instrument was tested during Davos International Solar Intercomparison, 1989 and the SOLCON data collected during the tests are analyzed to study the behavior of the instrument.

A compendium is presented of the ground and inflight scanner and nonscanner offsets and count conversion (gain) coefficients used for the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) production processing of data from the ERBS, NOAA-9, and NOAA-10 satellites for the 1 Nov. 1984 to 31 Dec. 1986.

The Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS) and the NOAA-9 spacecraft solar monitors were used to measure the total solar irradiance during the period October 1984 to December 1989. Decreasing trends in the irradiance measurements were observed as sunspot activity decreased to minimum levels in 1986; after 1986, increasing trends were observed as sunspot activity increased. The magnitude of the irradiance variability was found to be approximately 0.1 percent between sunspot minimum and maximum (late 1989). When compared with the 1984 to 1989 indices of solar magnetic activity, the irradiance trends appear to be in phase with the 11-year sunspot cycle. Both irradiance series yielded 1,365/sq Wm as the mean value of the solar irradiance, normalized to the mean earth/sun distance. The monitors are electrical substitution, active-cavity radiometers with estimated measurement precisions and accuracies of less than 0.02 and 0.2 percent, respectively.

This paper describes the algorithms and procedures used for in-flight calibration of the nonscanning radiometers used in the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) instruments. The computation of the count conversion coefficients used in the basic ERBE radiometric equations is described, as well as the determination of the offsets and time-dependent coefficients used to account for the in-flight changes in the radiometers. The calibration results for more than 5 years of ERBE data are summarized for all nonscanning radiometers. Discontinuities in the observed data, and the effects of these discontinuities are discussed. Applications of ERBE type calibration algorithms to the EOS/CERES platforms are suggested.

The Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) scanning radiometers are producing measurements of the incoming solar, earth/atmosphere-reflected solar, and earth/atmosphere-emitted radiation fields with measurement precisions and absolute accuracies, approaching 1 percent. ERBE uses thermistor bolometers as the detection elements in the narrow-field-of-view scanning radiometers. The scanning radiometers can sense radiation in the shortwave, longwave, and total broadband spectral regions of 0.2 to 5.0, 5.0 to 50.0, and 0.2 to 50.0 micrometers, respectively. Detailed models of the radiometers' response functions were developed in order to design the most suitable calibration techniques. These models guided the design of in-flight calibration procedures as well as the development and characterization of a vacuum-calibration chamber and the blackbody source which provided the absolute basis upon which the total and longwave radiometers were characterized. The flight calibration instrumentation for the narror-field-of-view scanning radiometers is presented and evaluated.

Data obtained by the ERBS solar monitors measuring total solar irradiance variability are discussed. The ERBS and NOAA-99 monitors derived 1365 W/sq m as the magnitude of the solar irradiance, normalized to 1 astronomical unit. The NOAA-10 monitor yielded 1363 W/m as the magnitude of the irradiance. The long-term precision of the monitors was demonstrated by the detection of the decreasing and increasing trends in the irradiance at levels of the order of 0.03 to 0.05 percent per year. The ERBS and NOAA-9 measurements demonstrated that solar variability exists in a systematic mode which is directly correlated with the solar magnetic activity, indicated by sunspot activity. It is argued that during the decline of sunspot cycle 22, the solar irradiance variability may be entirely different from that which was observed during the decline of cycle 21.

The streamwise components of velocity in the flow through a ninety degree bend of circular cross section for which the ratio of radius of curvature to diameter is 2.8 were measured. The development of strong pressure driven secondary flow in the form of a pair of counter rotating vortices in the steamwise direction is shown. Refractive index matching at the fluid wall interface was not employed; the displacement of the measurement volume due to refraction is allowed for in simple geometrical calculations.
