The Southern Wide-field Gamma-ray Observatory (SWGO) is a project by scientists and engineers from 14 countries and 78 institutions to design and build the first wide-field, ground-based gamma-ray observatory in the Southern Hemisphere, with high duty cycle and covering an energy range rom hundreds of GeV to the PeV scale. The observatory will cover the Southern sky and aims to map the Galaxy's large-scale emission, as well as detecting transient and variable phenomena. The host sites under consideration are at a minimum altitude of 4400 m.a.s.l. and comprise two types: flat plateaus of at least 1 km$^{2}$ for the installation of an array of tank-based water Cherenkov detectors (WCD), or large natural lakes for the direct deployment of WCD units. Four South American countries proposed excellent sites to host the observatory meeting these requirements. Argentina proposed two locations in the Salta province, Bolivia presented one site in Chacaltaya, Chile two locations within the Atacama Astronomical Park, and Peru two ground-based locations in the Arequipa district as well as lakes in the Cuzco region. The SWGO collaboration is currently conducting a site characterization study, gathering all the necessary information for site shortlisting and final site selection by the end of 2023. The process has reached the shortlisting phase, in which primary and backup sites for each country have been identified. The primary sites were visited by a team of experts from the collaboration, to investigate and validate the proposed site characteristics. We present a method to study the dynamics of a quasi-two dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate which contains initially many vortices at arbitrary locations. We present first the analytical solution of the dynamics in a homogeneous medium and in a parabolic trap for the ideal non-interacting case. For the homogeneous case this was introduced in the context of photonics. Here we discuss this case in the context of Bose-Einstein condensates and extend the analytical solution to the trapped case, for the first time. This linear case allows one to obtain the trajectories of the position of phase singularities present in the initial condensate along with time. Also, it allows one to predict some quantities of interest, such as the time at which a vortex and an antivortex contained in the initial condensate will merge. Secondly, the method is complemented with numerical simulations of the non-linear case. We use a numerical split-step simulation of the non-linear Gross-Pitaevskii equation to determine how these trajectories and quantities of interest are changed by the presence of interactions. The ESA/KU Leuven CubeSpec mission is specifically designed to provide low-cost space-based high-resolution optical spectroscopy. Here we highlight the science requirements and capabilities of CubeSpec. Context: the theory of stellar evolution presents shortcomings when confronted with asteroseismic probes of interior physical properties. The differences between observations and theory are often great because stellar models have mainly been calibrated from observables connected to the surface of stars. Period-spacing patterns caused by gravity modes are a particularly powerful asteroseismic tool that are useful for probing the near-core rotation and mixing of chemical elements in main-sequence stars with convective cores. Aims: we aim to compose a catalog of intermediate-mass stars in the TESS southern continuous viewing zone to reveal period-spacing patterns caused by gravity modes for use in future asteroseismic modeling. Methods: TESS full frame images were inspected to select stars of intermediate- and high-mass using color-magnitude criteria. Light curves were extracted from custom masks per star, adopting stringent constraints on the aperture masks and contamination. The extracted light curves were subject to iterative prewhitening to detect gravity modes. We developed a method based on the assumption that period spacings are an approximately linear function of the mode periods to build a template pattern. This template was used to extract the patterns and their bootstrap uncertainties. Results: our TESS catalog of high-quality period-spacing patterns is the first of its kind and contains 140 gravity-mode patterns in 106 Gamma Doradus stars and 2 slowly pulsating B-type stars. Half of these patterns contain 7 or more measured mode periods and the longest pattern contains 20 modes. We provide the community with a convenient software tool to search for period-spacing patterns and to process the extracted light curves. The Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S$^{4}$G) is a detailed study of over 2300 nearby galaxies in the near-infrared (NIR), which has been critical to our understanding of the detailed structures of nearby galaxies. Because the sample galaxies were selected only using radio-derived velocities, however, the survey favored late-type disk galaxies over lenticulars and ellipticals. A follow-up Spitzer survey was conducted to rectify this bias, adding 465 early-type galaxies (ETGs) to the original sample, to be analyzed in a manner consistent with the initial survey. We present the data release of this ETG extension, up to the third data processing pipeline (P3): surface photometry. We produce curves of growth and radial surface brightness profiles (with and without inclination corrections) using reduced and masked Spitzer IRAC 3.6$\mu$m and 4.5$\mu$m images produced through Pipelines 1 and 2, respectively. From these profiles, we derive the following integrated quantities: total magnitudes, stellar masses, concentration parameters, and galaxy size metrics. We showcase NIR scaling relations for ETGs among these quantities. We examine general trends across the whole S$^{4}$G and ETG extension among our derived parameters, highlighting differences between ETGs and late-type galaxies (LTGs). ETGs are, on average, more massive and more concentrated than LTGs, and also show subtle distinctions among ETG morphological sub-types. We also derive the following scaling relations and compare with previous results in visible light: mass--size (both half-light and isophotal), mass--concentration, mass--surface brightness (central, effective, and within 1 kpc), and mass--color. We investigate the origin of the extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (eDIG) and its predominant ionization mechanisms in five nearby (17-46 Mpc) low-mass ($10^9\text{-}10^{10}$ $M_{\odot}$) edge-on disk galaxies: ESO 157-49, ESO 469-15, ESO 544-27, IC 217, and IC 1553. We acquired Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) integral field spectroscopy and deep narrowband H$\alpha$ imaging of our sample galaxies. To investigate the connection between in-plane star formation and eDIG, we perform a photometric analysis of our narrowband H$\alpha$ imaging. We measure eDIG scale heights of $h_{z\text{eDIG}} = 0.59 \text{-} 1.39$ kpc and find a positive correlation between them and specific star formation rates. In all galaxies, we also find a strong correlation between extraplanar and midplane radial H$\alpha$ profiles. Using our MUSE data, we investigate the origin of eDIG via kinematics. We find ionized gas rotation velocity lags above the midplane with values between 10 and 27 km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$. While we do find hints of an accretion origin for the ionized gas in ESO 157-49, IC 217, and IC 1553, overall the ionized gas kinematics of our galaxies do not match a steady galaxy model or any simplistic model of accretion or internal origin for the gas. We also construct standard diagnostic diagrams and emission-line maps (EW(H$\alpha$), [NII]/H$\alpha$, [SII]//H$\alpha$, [OIII]/H$\beta$) and find regions consistent with mixed OB star and hot low-mass evolved stars (HOLMES) ionization, and mixed OB-shock ionization. Our results suggest that OB stars are the primary driver of eDIG ionization, while both HOLMES and shocks may locally contribute to the ionization of eDIG to a significant degree. Context. There is currently a niche for providing high-cadence, high resolution, time-series optical spectroscopy from space, which can be filled by using a low-cost cubesat mission. The Belgian-led ESA CubeSpec mission is specifically designed to provide space-based, low-cost spectroscopy with specific capabilities that can be optimised for a particular science need. Approved as an ESA in-orbit demonstrator, the CubeSpec satellite's primary science objective will focus on obtaining high-cadence, high resolution optical spectroscopic data to facilitate asteroseismology of pulsating massive stars. Aims. In this first paper, we aim to search for pulsating massive stars suitable for the CubeSpec mission, specifically $\beta$ Cep stars, which typically require time series spectroscopy to identify the geometry of their pulsation modes. Methods. Based on the science requirements needed to enable asteroseismology of massive stars with the capabilities of CubeSpec's spectrograph, we combine a literature study for pulsation with the analysis of recent high-cadence time series TESS photometry to classify the variability for stars brighter than V < 4 mag and between O9 and B3 in spectral type. Results. Among the 90 stars that meet our magnitude and spectral type requirements, we identify 23 promising $\beta$ Cep stars with high-amplitude (non-)radial pulsation modes with frequencies below 7 d$^{-1}$. Using further constraints on projected rotational velocities, pulsation amplitudes and number of pulsation modes, we devise a prioritised target list for the CubeSpec mission according to its science requirements and the potential of the targets for asteroseismology. In a graph $G$, a vertex dominates itself and its neighbours. A subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ is said to be a double dominating set of $G$ if $S$ dominates every vertex of $G$ at least twice. The minimum cardinality among all double dominating sets of $G$ is the double domination number. In this article, we obtain tight bounds and closed formulas for the double domination number of lexicographic product graphs $G\circ H$ in terms of invariants of the factor graphs $G$ and $H$.

A key aspect of the design of evolutionary and swarm intelligence algorithms is studying their performance. Statistical comparisons are also a crucial part which allows for reliable conclusions to be drawn. In the present paper we gather and examine the approaches taken from different perspectives to summarise the assumptions made by these statistical tests, the conclusions reached and the steps followed to perform them correctly. In this paper, we conduct a survey on the current trends of the proposals of statistical analyses for the comparison of algorithms of computational intelligence and include a description of the statistical background of these tests. We illustrate the use of the most common tests in the context of the Competition on single-objective real parameter optimisation of the IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation (CEC) 2017 and describe the main advantages and drawbacks of the use of each kind of test and put forward some recommendations concerning their use., Comment: 52 pages, 10 figures, 19 tables

We describe a resonantly enhanced Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) that can be operated over a wide temperature range of 55C without being actively biased, while providing a significant resonant enhancement of 6.8 at the nominal wavelength / temperature compared to a linear MZM driven with a distributed driver. More importantly, it enables a ~20X improvement in power consumption compared to a 50 {\Omega} matched linear traveling wave modulator with comparable phase shifter technology, drive voltage and output optical modulation amplitude. Passive biasing of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer is further implemented by replacing a splitter element in the MZM with a novel device combining splitting and fiber coupling functionalities in a single, multi-modal structure, that converts permanent fiber placement into a phase correction. Three-dimensional microwave waveguide cavities are essential tools for many cavity quantum electrodynamics experiments. However, the need to control quantum emitters with dc magnetic fields inside the cavity often limits such experiments to normal-conducting cavities with relatively low quality factors of about $10^4$. Similarly, controlling quantum emitters with dc electric fields in normal- and superconducting waveguide cavities has so far been difficult, because the insertion of dc electrodes has strongly limited the quality factor. Here, we present a method to apply dc electric fields within a superconducting waveguide cavity, which is based on the insertion of dc electrodes at the nodes of the microwave electric field. Moreover, we present a method to apply dc magnetic fields within the same cavity by trapping the magnetic flux in holes positioned in facing walls of the cavity. We demonstrate that the $\text{TE}_{301}$ mode of such a superconducting, rectangular cavity made from niobium maintains a high internal quality factor of $Q_{\text{int}} \sim 1.7 \cdot 10^6$ at the few photon level and a base temperature of $3~\text{K}$. A cloud of Rydberg atoms coupled to the microwave electric field of the cavity is used to probe the applied dc electric and magnetic fields via the quadratic Stark effect and the Zeeman effect, respectively.

In vitro epithelial monolayers exhibit a rich repertoire of collective dynamical behaviours according to microenvironment mechanical features. We investigate the statistical and dynamical properties of human bronchial epithelial cell (HBEC) flows in bulk, by analysing their large length-scale and long time-scale spatiotemporal dynamics. Activity-driven spontaneous collective flows consist of an ensemble of vortices randomly positioned in space. By analysing a large population of vortices, we show that their area follows an exponential law with a constant mean value and their rotational frequency is size-independent, both being characteristic features of the chaotic dynamics of active nematic suspensions. Indeed, we find that HBECs self-organise in nematic domains of several cell lengths. Nematic defects are found at the interface between domains with a total number that remains constant by the dynamical balance of nucleation and annihilation events. Near +/-1/2 defects, the mean velocity field is in faithful agreement with the dynamics of extensile active nematics.

Optomechanical systems provide a means for studying and controlling quantum effects in the motion of macroscopic objects. To date, quantum optomechanical effects have been studied in objects made from solids and gases. Here we describe measurements of quantum behavior in the vibrations of a liquid body. Specifically, we monitor the fluctuations of an individual acoustic standing wave in superfluid liquid helium, and find that it displays the characteristic signatures of zero-point motion and measurement back-action. This opens the possibility of exploiting the properties of liquids in general (and superfluid helium in particular) to access qualitatively new regimes of quantum optomechanics., Comment: 53 pages, 15 figures, 1 table (including supplementary information)

We have used Spitzer images of a sample of 68 barred spiral galaxies in the local universe to make systematic measurements of bar length and bar strength. We combine these with precise determinations of the corotation radii associated with the bars, taken from our previous study which used the phase change from radial inflow to radial outflow of gas at corotation, based on high resolution two-dimensional velocity fields in H{\alpha} taken with a Fabry-P\'erot spectrometer. After presenting the histograms of the derived bar parameters, we study their dependence on the galaxy morphological type and on the total stellar mass of the host galaxy, and then produce a set of parametric plots. These include the bar pattern speed versus bar length, the pattern speed normalized with the characteristic pattern speed of the outer disk versus the bar strength, and the normalized pattern speed versus R, the ratio of corotation radius to bar length. To provide guide-lines for our interpretation we used a recently published simulations, including disk and dark matter halo components. Our most striking conclusion is that bars with values of R < 1.4, previously considered dynamically fast rotators, can be among the slowest rotators both in absolute terms and when their pattern speeds are normalized. The simulations confirm that this is because as the bars are braked they can grow longer more quickly than the outward drift of the corotation radius. In recent years the interest in studying interactions of Rydberg atoms or ensembles thereof with optical and microwave frequency fields has steadily increased, both in the context of basic research and for potential applications in quantum information processing. We present measurements of the dispersive interaction between an ensemble of helium atoms in the 37s Rydberg state and a single resonator mode by extracting the amplitude and phase change of a weak microwave probe tone transmitted through the cavity. The results are in quantitative agreement with predictions made on the basis of the dispersive Tavis-Cummings Hamiltonian. We study this system with the goal of realizing a hybrid between superconducting circuits and Rydberg atoms. We measure maximal collective coupling strengths of 1 MHz, corresponding to 3*10^3 Rydberg atoms coupled to the cavity. As expected, the dispersive shift is found to be inversely proportional to the atom-cavity detuning and proportional to the number of Rydberg atoms. This possibility of measuring the number of Rydberg atoms in a nondestructive manner is relevant for quantitatively evaluating scattering cross sections in experiments with Rydberg atoms.

In this paper we present the results of our search for and study of $z \gtrsim 6$ galaxy candidates behind the third Frontier Fields (FF) cluster, MACSJ0717.5+3745, and its parallel field, combining data from Hubble and Spitzer. We select 39 candidates using the Lyman Break technique, for which the clear non-detection in optical make the extreme mid-$z$ interlopers hypothesis unlikely. We also take benefit from $z \gtrsim 6$ samples selected using previous Frontier Fields datasets of Abell 2744 and MACS0416 to improve the constraints on the properties of very high-redshift objects. We compute the redshift and the physical properties, such emission lines properties, star formation rate, reddening, and stellar mass for all Frontier Fields objects from their spectral energy distribution using templates including nebular emission lines. We study the relationship between several physical properties and confirm the trend already observed in previous surveys for evolution of star formation rate with galaxy mass, and between the size and the UV luminosity of our candidates. The analysis of the evolution of the UV Luminosity Function with redshift seems more compatible with an evolution of density. Moreover, no robust $z\ge$8.5 object is selected behind the cluster field, and few $z$$\sim$9 candidates have been selected in the two previous datasets from this legacy survey, suggesting a strong evolution in the number density of galaxies between $z$$\sim$8 and 9. Thanks to the use of the lensing cluster, we study the evolution of the star formation rate density produced by galaxies with L$>$0.03L$^{\star}$, and confirm the strong decrease observed between $z$$\sim$8 and 9., Comment: 21 pages - Accepted for publication in ApJ - v2: small corrections

We present a new color-selection technique, based on the Bruzual & Charlot models convolved with the bands of the ALHAMBRA survey, and the redshifted position of the Balmer jump to select star-forming galaxies in the redshift range 0.5 < z < 1.5. These galaxies are dubbed Balmer jump Galaxies BJGs. We apply the iSEDfit Bayesian approach to fit each detailed SED and determine star-formation rate (SFR), stellar mass, age and absolute magnitudes. The mass of the haloes where these samples reside are found via a clustering analysis. Five volume-limited BJG sub-samples with different mean redshifts are found to reside in haloes of median masses $\sim 10^{12.5 \pm 0.2} M_\odot$ slightly increasing toward z=0.5. This increment is similar to numerical simulations results which suggests that we are tracing the evolution of an evolving population of haloes as they grow to reach a mass of $\sim 10^{12.7 \pm 0.1} M_\odot$ at z=0.5. The likely progenitors of our samples at z$\sim$3 are Lyman Break Galaxies, which at z$\sim$2 would evolve into star-forming BzK galaxies, and their descendants in the local Universe are elliptical galaxies.Hence, this allows us to follow the putative evolution of the SFR, stellar mass and age of these galaxies. From z$\sim$1.0 to z$\sim$0.5, the stellar mass of the volume limited BJG samples nearly does not change with redshift, suggesting that major mergers play a minor role on the evolution of these galaxies. The SFR evolution accounts for the small variations of stellar mass, suggesting that star formation and possible minor mergers are the main channels of mass assembly., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures. A catalogue of the morphological features for the complete Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S$^4$G), including 2352 nearby galaxies, is presented. The measurements are made using 3.6 $\mu$m images, largely tracing the old stellar population; at this wavelength the effects of dust are also minimal. The measured features are the sizes, ellipticities, and orientations of bars, rings, ringlenses, and lenses. Measured in a similar manner are also barlenses (lens-like structures embedded in the bars), which are not lenses in the usual sense, being rather the more face-on counterparts of the boxy/peanut structures in the edge-on view. In addition, pitch angles of spiral arm segments are measured for those galaxies where they can be reliably traced. More than one pitch angle may appear for a single galaxy. All measurements are made in a human-supervised manner so that attention is paid to each galaxy. We used isophotal analysis, unsharp masking, and fitting ellipses to measured structures. We find that the sizes of the inner rings and lenses normalized to barlength correlate with the galaxy mass: the normalized sizes increase toward the less massive galaxies; it has been suggested that this is related to the larger dark matter content in the bar region in these systems. Bars in the low mass galaxies are also less concentrated, likely to be connected to the mass cut-off in the appearance of the nuclear rings and lenses. We also show observational evidence that barlenses indeed form part of the bar, and that a large fraction of the inner lenses in the non-barred galaxies could be former barlenses in which the thin outer bar component has dissolved., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The monoclinic double-perovskite Sr2YRuO6 has recently gained a renewed interest in order to get a deeper insight into the exotic magnetic ground states associated with geometric frustration. Striking discrepancies between the spin order derived from the neutron diffraction refinements and the macroscopic magnetic and thermal responses is a major challenge that must be addressed. In this work, detailed neutron diffraction measurements as a function of temperature yield a completely different interpretation of the patterns. We show that at low temperatures a spin structure of the K2NiF4-type is an accessible configuration for the magnetic ground state. In the neighborhood of the magnetic transition this configuration evolves into a canted super-structure. The deduced temperature dependence of the canting angle exhibits two closely spaced peaks, which are in excellent agreement with the double peaks in the magnetic contribution to the specific heat and in the thermal expansion coefficient. We explain these features in terms of reorientation of the net ferromagnetic moment of the noncollinear spin state, due to the local breaking of the inversion symmetry promoted by the monoclinic distortions, with structural changes acting as the driving force., Comment: accepted for publication in New Journal of Physics (2015)

We present the BaLROG (Bars in Low Redshift Optical Galaxies) sample of 16 morphologically distinct barred spirals to characterise observationally the influence of bars on nearby galaxies. Each galaxy is a mosaic of several pointings observed with the IFU spectrograph SAURON leading to a tenfold sharper spatial resolution (~100 pc) compared to ongoing IFU surveys. In this paper we focus on the kinematic properties. We calculate the bar strength Qb from classical torque analysis using 3.6 {\mu}m Spitzer (S4G) images, but also develop a new method based solely on the kinematics. A correlation between the two measurements is found and backed up by N-body simulations, verifying the measurement of Qb . We find that bar strengths from ionised gas kinematics are ~2.5 larger than those measured from stellar kinematics and that stronger bars have enhanced influence on inner kinematic features. We detect that stellar angular momentum "dips" at 0.2$\pm$0.1 bar lengths and half of our sample exhibits an anti-correlation of h3 - stellar velocity (v/{\sigma}) in these central parts. An increased flattening of the stellar {\sigma} gradient with increasing bar strength supports the notion of bar-induced orbit mixing. The aim of our study is to use dynamical simulations to explore the influence of two important dynamical bar parameters, bar strength and bar pattern speed, on the shape of the bar dust lanes. To quantify the shape of the dust lanes we have developed a new systematic method to measure the dust lane curvature. Previous numerical simulations have compared the curvature of bar dust lanes with the bar strength, predicting a relation between both parameters which has been supported by observational studies but with a large spread. We take into account the bar pattern speed to explore, simultaneously, the effect of both parameters on the dust lane shape. To that end, we separate our galactic bars in fast bars $\left(1 < \mathcal{R} < 1.4 \right)$ and slow bars $\left(\mathcal{R} > 1.4 \right)$, obtaining, as previous simulations, an inverse relation between the dust lane curvature and the bar strength for fast bars. For the first time, we extend the study to slow bars, finding a constant curvature as a function of the bar strength. As a result, we conclude that weak bars with straight dust lanes are candidates for slow bars. Nonparametric statistical tests are useful procedures that can be applied in a wide range of situations, such as testing randomness or goodness of fit, one-sample, two-sample and multiple-sample analysis, association between bivariate samples or count data analysis. Their use is often preferred to parametric tests due to the fact that they require less restrictive assumptions about the population sampled. In this work, JavaNPST, an open source Java library implementing 40 nonparametric statistical tests, is presented. It can be helpful for programmers and practitioners interested in performing nonparametric statistical analyses, providing a quick and easy way of running these tests directly within any Java code. We introduce a novel local time-stepping technique for marching-in-time algorithms. The technique is denoted as Causal-Path Local Time-Stepping (CPLTS) and it is applied for two time integration techniques: fourth order low--storage explicit Runge--Kutta (LSERK4) and second order Leapfrog (LF2). The CPLTS method is applied to evolve Maxwell's curl equations using a Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) scheme for the spatial discretization. Numerical results for LF2 and LSERK4 are compared with analytical solutions and the Montseny's LF2 technique. The results show that the CPLTS technique improves the dispersive and dissipative properties of LF2-LTS scheme.

Silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) are the photon detectors chosen for the tracking readout in NEXT, a neutrinoless {\beta}{\beta} decay experiment which uses a high pressure gaseous xenon time projection chamber (TPC). The reconstruction of event track and topology in this gaseous detector is a key handle for background rejection. Among the commercially available sensors that can be used for tracking, SiPMs offer important advantages, mainly high gain, ruggedness, cost-effectiveness and radio-purity. Their main drawback, however, is their non sensitivity in the emission spectrum of the xenon scintillation (peak at 175 nm). This is overcome by coating these sensors with the organic wavelength shifter tetraphenyl butadienne (TPB). In this paper we describe the protocol developed for coating the SiPMs with TPB and the measurements performed for characterizing the coatings as well as the performance of the coated sensors in the UV-VUV range., Comment: Submitted to the Journal of Instrumentation on december 26th 2011

A new method for calibrating the hadron response of a segmented calorimeter is developed and successfully applied to beam test data. It is based on a principal component analysis of energy deposits in the calorimeter layers, exploiting longitudinal shower development information to improve the measured energy resolution. Corrections for invisible hadronic energy and energy lost in dead material in front of and between the calorimeters of the ATLAS experiment were calculated with simulated Geant4 Monte Carlo events and used to reconstruct the energy of pions impinging on the calorimeters during the 2004 Barrel Combined Beam Test at the CERN H8 area. For pion beams with energies between 20 GeV and 180 GeV, the particle energy is reconstructed within 3% and the energy resolution is improved by between 11% and 25% compared to the resolution at the electromagnetic scale., Comment: 36 pages, 12 figures, accepted by JINST

A detailed study is presented of the expected performance of the ATLAS detector. The reconstruction of tracks, leptons, photons, missing energy and jets is investigated, together with the performance of b-tagging and the trigger. The physics potential for a variety of interesting physics processes, within the Standard Model and beyond, is examined. The study comprises a series of notes based on simulations of the detector and physics processes, with particular emphasis given to the data expected from the first years of operation of the LHC at CERN.

In this paper we investigate the magnetic state and the role of the crystalline structure in RuSr2Eu1.5Ce0.5Cu2O10 (Ru-1222). Measurements were made in the isomorphic series (Nb1-xRux)Sr2Eu1.5Ce0.5Cu2O10 [(Nb,Ru)-1222], with x between 0 and 1. 3D XY fluctuations above the magnetic transition were not observed in Ru-1222, suggesting a weak inter-plane coupling between the RuO2 layers. The compositional dependence of the magnetic susceptibility shows a rapid broadening with increasing Nb content, explained in terms of a cluster-glass state. The variation of several superconducting parameters as a function of Ru content is linear in the whole concentration range, with no jumps at the critical concentration for which percolation of long range order is expected. 3D Arrhenius and Vogel-Fulcher-type dependencies fail to describe the dynamic properties. Fitting of a generalized Vogel-Fulcher-type dependence, with ln(tau/tau0) = A(T-T0)^-B, yield B = 2.0, in excellent agreement with Monte Carlo simulations for 2D systems. The value deduced for T0 agrees well with the re-opening of hysteresis in the M(H) curves. The observed superconducting and magnetic features are explained in terms of a scenario of 2D magnetic islands at the RuO2 layers, with no long range magnetic order., Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. We create a complete gravity torque map of the disk of the LINER/Seyfert 1.9 galaxy NGC4579. We quantify the efficiency of angular momentum transport and search for signatures of secular evolution in the fueling process from r~15kpc down to the inner r~50pc around the Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN). We use both the 1-0 and 2-1 line maps of CO obtained with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) as part of the NUclei of Galaxies-(NUGA)-project. We derive the stellar potential from a NIR (K band) wide field image of the galaxy. The K-band image, which reveals a stellar bar, together with a high resolution HI map of NGC4579 obtained with the Very Large Array (VLA), allow us to extend the gravity torque analysis to the outer disk. The bulk of the gas response traced by the CO PdBI maps follows the expected gas flow pattern induced by the bar potential in the presence of two Inner Lindblad Resonances (ILR). We also detect an oval distortion in the inner r~200pc of the K-band image. The oval is not aligned with the large-scale bar, a signature of dynamical decoupling. The morphology of the outer disk suggests that the neutral gas is currently piling up in a pseudo-ring formed by two winding spiral arms that are morphologically decoupled from the bar structure. In the outer disk, the decoupling of the spiral allows the gas to efficiently produce net gas inflow on intermediate scales. The corotation barrier seems to be overcome due to secular evolution processes. The gas in the inner disk is efficiently funneled by gravity torques down to r~300pc. Closer to the AGN, the two m=2 modes (bar and oval) act in concert to produce net gas inflow down to r~50pc, providing a clear smoking gun evidence of fueling with associated short dynamical time-scales., Comment: Submitted for publication in A&A. 21 pages, 21 figures

A small set of final prototypes of the ATLAS Inner Detector silicon tracker (Pixel and SCT) were used to take data during the 2004 Combined Test Beam. Data were collected from runs with beams of different flavour (electrons, pions, muons and photons) with a momentum range of 2 to 180 GeV/c. Four independent methods were used to align the silicon modules. The corrections obtained were validated using the known momenta of the beam particles and were shown to yield consistent results among the different alignment approaches. From the residual distributions, it is concluded that the precision attained in the alignment of the silicon modules is of the order of 5 micrometers in their most precise coordinate., Comment: 22 pages, submitted to JINST, 129 authors

We propose a rationale for experimentally studying the intricate relationship between the rate of information transmission and synchronization level in active networks, applying theoretical results recently proposed. We consider two non-identical coupled Chua's circuit with non-identical coupling strengths in order to illustrate the proceeding for experimental scenarios of very few data points coming from highly non-coherent coupled systems, such that phase synchronization can only be detected by methods that do not rely explicitely on the calculation of the phase. A relevant finding is to show that for the coupled Chua's circuit, the larger the level of synchronization the larger the rate of information exchanged between both circuits. We further validate our findings with data from numerical simulations, and discuss an extension to arbitrarily large active networks.

ATLAS experiment, designed to probe the interactions of particles emerging out of proton proton collisions at energies of up to 14 TeV, will assume operation at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in 2007. This paper discusses the assembly and the quality control tests of forward detector modules for the ATLAS silicon microstrip detector assembled at the Instituto de Fisica Corpuscular (IFIC) in Valencia. The construction and testing procedures are outlined and the laboratory equipment is briefly described. We propose to add high precision track detectors 55m downstream on both (E&W) sides of CDF, to measure high Feynman-x protons and antiprotons in association with central states. A primary motivation is to search for the Higgs boson, and if it is seen to measure its mass precisely. The track detectors will be silicon strip telescopes backed up by high resolution time-of-flight counters. The addition of these small detectors effectively converts the Tevatron into a gluon-gluon collider with sqrt{s} from 0 to ~ 200 GeV. This experiment will also measure millions/year clean high-|t| elastic scattering events and produce millions of pure gluon jets. The lower critical field of the grains, $H_{c1}$, and the intragrain critical current density, $J_{c}$, were determined for the superconducting ruthenate-cuprate RuSr$_{2}$Gd$_{1.5}$Ce$_{0.5}$Cu$_{2}$O$_{10-\delta}$ [Ru-1222(Gd)] through a systematic study of the hysteresis in magnetoresistance loops. A reliable method, based on the effects of the magnetization of the grains on the net local field at the intergranular junctions is provided, circumventing the problem of the strong masking of the superconducting diamagnetic signal by the ferromagnetic background. The temperature dependency of $H_{c1}$ and $J_{c}$ both exhibit a smooth increase on cooling without saturation down to $T/T_{SC}$ $\cong $ 0.2. The obtained $H_{c1}$ values vary between 150 and 1500 Oe in the 0.2 $\leq $ $% T/T_{SC}$ $\leq $ 0.4 interval, for samples annealed in an oxygen flow; oxygenation under high pressure (50 atm) leads to a further increase. These values are much larger than the previously reported rough assessments (25-50 Oe), using conventional magnetization measurements. High $J_{c}$ values of $% \sim $ 10$^{7}$ A/cm$^{2}$, comparable to the high-T$_{c}$ cuprates, were obtained. The $H_{c1}(T)$ and $J_{c}(T)$ dependencies are explained in the context of a magnetic phase separation scenario., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in European Physical Journal B

The intergranular pinning potential U and the critical current density Jc for polycrystalline RuSr2Gd1.5Ce0.5Cu2O10 ruthenate-cuprate were determined at zero magnetic field and temperature through the frequency shift in the peak of the imaginary part of the ac magnetic susceptibility, X". A critical state model, including a flux creep term, was found to accurately describe the X" behavior. The obtained values, U(H=0,T=0) ~ 30 meV and Jc(H=0,T=0) ~ 110 A/cm^2 are about two orders of magnitude and four times lower, respectively, in comparison with the high-Tc cuprate YBa2Cu3O7. These results were ascribed to the effects of the Ru magnetization on the connectivity of the weak-linked network, giving an intrinsic local field at the junctions of ~ 15 Oe. The impact on Jc is less intense because of the small average grain radius (~1 micrometer). The intragranular London penetration length at T = 0, [lambda_L(0) ~ 2 micrometer], was derived using a Kim-type expression for the field dependence of Jc. A possible source for the large value of lambda_L in comparison to the high-Tc cuprates is suggested to come from a strong intragrain granularity, due to structural domains of coherent rotated RuO6 octahedra separated by antiphase boundaries., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. A systematic study of I-V characteristic curves for RuSr2GdCu2O8 [Ru-(1212)] is presented, with magnetic fields up to 3 T and 5 K

A characterization of the magnetic superconductors RuSr2GdCu2O8 [Ru-(1212)] and RuSr2(Gd1.5Ce0.5)Cu2O10 [Ru-(1222)] through resistance measurements as a function of temperature and magnetic field is presented. Two peaks in the derivative of the resistive curves are identified as intra- and intergrain superconducting transitions. Strong intragrain granularity effects are observed, and explained by considering the antiphase boundaries between structural domains of coherently rotated RuO6 octahedra as intragrain Josephson-junctions. A different field dependence of the intragrain transition temperature in these compounds was found. For Ru-(1212) it remains unchanged up to 0.1 T, decreasing for higher fields. In Ru-(1222) it smoothly diminishes with the increase in field even for a value as low as 100 Oe. These results are interpreted as a consequence of a spin-flop transition of the Ru moments. The large separation between the RuO2 layers in Ru-(1222) promotes a weak interlayer coupling, leading the magnetic transition to occur at lower fields. The suppression rate of the intragrain transition temperature is about five times higher for Ru-(1222), a result we relate to an enhancement of the 2D character of the vortex structure. A distinctive difference with conventional cuprates is the sharp increase in amplitude of the intergrain peak in both systems, as the field is raised, which is ascribed to percolation through a fraction of high quality intergrain junctions., Comment: Submitted for Physical Review B

Static calculation and preliminary kinetic Monte Carlo simulation studies are undertaken for the nucleation and growth on a model system which follows a Frank-van der Merwe mechanism. In the present case, we consider the deposition of Ag on Au(100) and Au(111) surfaces. The interactions were calculated using the embedded atom model. The process of formation and growth of 2D Ag structures on Au(100) and Au(111) is investigated and the influence of surface steps on this phenomenon is studied. Very different time scales are predicted for Ag diffusion on Au(100) and Au(111), thus rendering very different regimes for the nucleation and growth of the related 2D phases. The running mass of the b quark as defined in the MS-bar renormalization scheme, m_b, was measured at the M_Z scale using 2.8 million hadronic Z^0 decays collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP. The result is m_b(M_Z) = 2.67 +- 0.25 (stat.) +- 0.34 (frag.) +- 0.27(theo.) GeV/c^2 which differs from that obtained at the Upsilon scale, by m_b(M_\Upsilon/2)-m_b(M_Z) = 1.49 +- 0.52 GeV/c^2. Since 1995, LEP has steadily increased the center of mass energy of the colliding beams, from the M_Z resonance to 133, 161 and 172 GeV. New measurements of the strong coupling constant, alpha_s, at these energies have been performed by the LEP experiments, L3, ALEPH, OPAL and DELPHI. In this article, the new results are summarized, and combined with the previous LEP measurement of alpha_s(M_Z) in order to obtain an updated LEP average of alpha_s(M_Z) = 0.120 +- 0.005., Comment: 5-6 pages, 3 figures. Quantum field theories and Matrix models have a far richer solution set than is normally considered, due to the many boundary conditions which must be set to specify a solution of the Schwinger-Dyson equations. The complete set of solutions of these equations is obtained by generalizing the path integral to include sums over various inequivalent contours of integration in the complex plane. We discuss the importance of these exotic solutions. While naively the complex contours seem perverse, they are relevant to the study of theta vacua and critical phenomena. Furthermore, it can be shown that within certain phases of many theories, the physical vacuum does not correspond to an integration over a real contour. We discuss the solution set for the special case of one component zero dimensional scalar field theories, and make remarks about matrix models and higher dimensional field theories that will be developed in more detail elsewhere. Even the zero dimensional examples have much structure, and show some analogues of phenomena which are usually attributed to the effects of taking a thermodynamic limit., Comment: 32 pages, Latex, 3 figures

Identified $b\overline{b}g$ and $q\overline{q}\gamma$ events from DELPHI are used to measure the ratio of the mean charged particle multiplicity distribution between gluon and quark jets. The dependence of this ratio with the jet energy is established using about three million Z$^0$ decays. Results from all other detectors are discussed and compared. A nice agreement is found among all them. The ratio between the normalized total three-jet cross sections of $b\overline{b}g$ and $q\overline{q}g, q \equiv u,d,s$ events is also determined. The preliminary value obtained indicates that $b$ quarks are experimentaly seen to radiate less than light quarks due to their higher mass. The performace of an ATLAS-A silicon micro-strip detector prototype with FELIX 128 analogue read out chip has been studied. The noise level and the signal to noise ratio have been measured as a funtion of both detector bias and temperature. Three jet events arising from decays of the $Z^0$ boson, collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP, were used to measure differences in the properties of quark and gluon jet fragmentation. Gluon jets were anti-tagged in $b\bar{b}g$ events, by identifiying $b$ quark jets with high purities. Unbiased quark jets came from events $q\bar{q}\gamma$ with two jets plus one photon. A comparison of quark and gluon jet properties in different energy ranges was performed for the first time and within the same detector. The average value of the ratio of the mean charged multiplicities of gluon and quark jets was measured to be \[ 1.232 \pm 0.026 (\mbox{esta.}) \pm 0.018 (\mbox{sist.}) \] where the fraction of b-quark initiates jets was 11\% and the Durham jet finding algorithm has been used for the selection of three jet events. In agreement with QCD an increase of this ratio with energy was observed at a $3\sigma$ level. A further dependence of this ratio related with the angular acceptance of the algorithm used to reconstruct jets was also measured. Gluon jets have a broader energy and particle flow around its jet axis than quark jets of equivalent energy. The string effect has been observed in fully symmetric three-jet events. The ratio $R_\gamma$ of the charged particles flow in the $q\bar{q}$ inter-jet region of the $q\bar{q}g$ and $q\bar{q}\gamma$ samples was measured in agreement with the perturbative QCD expectation \[ \frac{(N_{qq})_{q\bar{q}g}}{(N_{qq})_{q\bar{q}\gamma}} = 0.058 \pm 0.06 (\mbox{stat.+sist.}) \] The dependence of the mean charged multiplicity on the hadronic center-of-mass energy was analysed in photon plus $n$-jet events.
