1. Confinement determines transport of a reaction-diffusion active matter front

Abstract: Couplings between biochemical and mechanical processes have a profound impact on embryonic development. However, in-vitro studies capable of quantifying these interactions have remained elusive. Here, we investigate a synthetic system where a DNA reaction-diffusion (RD) front is advected by a turbulent flow generated by active matter (AM) flows in a quasi-one-dimensional geometry. Whereas the dynamics of simple RD fronts solely depend on the reaction and diffusion rates, we show that RD-AM front propagation is also influenced by the confinement geometry. We first experimentally dissected the different components of the reaction-diffusion-advection process by knocking out reaction or advection and observed how RD-AM allows for faster transport over large distances, avoiding dilution. We then show how confinement impacts active matter flow: while changes in instantaneous flow velocities are small; correlation times are dramatically increased with decreasing confinement. As a result, RD-AM front speed increased up to 8-fold compared to a RD one, in quantitative agreement with a conveyor belt RDA theoretical model. The RD-AM experimental system described here provides a framework for the rational engineering of complex spatiotemporal processes observed in living systems. 2. Crosslinking and depletion determine spatial instabilities in cytoskeletal active matter

Abstract: Active gels made of cytoskeletal proteins are valuable materials with attractive non-equilibrium properties such as spatial self-organization and self-propulsion. At least four typical routes to spatial patterning have been reported to date in different types of cytoskeletal active gels: bending and buckling instabilities in extensile systems, and global and local contraction instabilities in contractile gels. Here we report the observation of these four instabilities in a single type of active gel and we show that they are controlled by two parameters: the concentrations of ATP and depletion agent. We demonstrate that as the ATP concentration decreases, the concentration of passive motors increases until the gel undergoes a gelation transition. At this point, buckling is selected against bending, while global contraction is favored over local ones. Our observations are coherent with a hydrodynamic model of a viscoelastic active gel where the filaments are crosslinked with a characteristic time that diverges as the ATP concentration decreases. Our work thus provides a unified view of spatial instabilities in cytoskeletal active matter.

3. The Group Theoretic Roots of Information: permutations, symmetry, and entropy

Abstract: We propose a new interpretation of measures of information and disorder by connecting these concepts to group theory in a new way. Entropy and group theory are connected here by their common relation to sets of permutations. A combinatorial measure of information and disorder is proposed, in terms of integers and discrete functions, that we call the integer entropy. The Shannon measure of information is the limiting case of a richer, more general conceptual structure that reveals relations among finite groups, information, and symmetries. It is shown that the integer entropy converges uniformly to the Shannon entropy when the group includes all permutations, the Symmetric group, and the number of objects increases without bound. The harmonic numbers have a well-known combinatorial meaning as the expected number of disjoint, non-empty cycles in permutations of n objects, and since integer entropy is defined in terms of the expected value of the number of cycles over the set of permutations, it also has a clear combinatorial meaning. Since all finite groups are isomorphic to subgroups of the Symmetric group, every finite group has a corresponding information functional, analogous to the Shannon entropy and a number series analogous to the harmonic numbers. The Cameron-Semeraro cycle polynomial is used to analyze the integer entropy for finite groups, and to characterize the series analogous to the Harmonic numbers. We introduce and use a reciprocal polynomial, the transposition polynomial that provides an additional tool and new insights. 4. Tunable corrugated patterns in an active gel sheet

Abstract: Active matter locally converts chemical energy into mechanical work and, for this reason, it provides new mechanisms of pattern formation. In particular, active gels made of protein motors and filaments are far-from-equilibrium systems that exhibit spontaneous flow,[Kruse2004, Voituriez2005] leading to active turbulence in two and three dimensions[Sanchez2012, Kumar2018] and coherent flow in three dimensions[Wu2017] (3D). Although these dynamic flows reveal a characteristic length scale resulting from the interplay between active forcing and passive restoring forces, the observation of static and long-range spatial patterns in active gels has remained elusive. In this work, we demonstrate that a 2D free-standing nematic active gel, formed spontaneously by depletion forces from a 3D solution of kinesin motors and microtubule filaments, actively buckles out-of-plane into a centimeter-sized periodic corrugated sheet that is stable for several days at low activity. Importantly, the corrugations are formed in the absence of flow and their wavelength and stability are controlled by the motor concentration, in agreement with a hydrodynamic theory. At higher activities these patterns are transient with the gel becoming turbulent at longer times. Our results underline the importance of both passive and active forces in shaping active gels and indicate that a static material can be sculpted through an active mechanism.

5. Expansion of the Kullback-Leibler Divergence, and a new class of information metrics

Abstract: Inferring and comparing complex, multivariable probability density functions is fundamental to problems in several fields, including probabilistic learning, network theory, and data analysis. Classification and prediction are the two faces of this class of problem. We take an approach here that simplifies many aspects of these problems by presenting a structured, series expansion of the Kullback-Leibler divergence - a function central to information theory - and devise a distance metric based on this divergence. Using the M\"obius inversion duality between multivariable entropies and multivariable interaction information, we express the divergence as an additive series in the number of interacting variables, which provides a restricted and simplified set of distributions to use as approximation and with which to model data. Truncations of this series yield approximations based on the number of interacting variables. The first few terms of the expansion-truncation are illustrated and shown to lead naturally to familiar approximations, including the well-known Kirkwood superposition approximation. Truncation can also induce a simple relation between the multi-information and the interaction information. A measure of distance between distributions, based on Kullback-Leibler divergence, is then described and shown to be a true metric if properly restricted. The expansion is shown to generate a hierarchy of metrics and connects this work to information geometry formalisms. We give an example of the application of these metrics to a graph comparision problem that shows that the formalism can be applied to a wide range of network problems, provides a general approach for systematic approximations in numbers of interactions or connections, and a related quantitative metric., Comment: 25 pages, 1 figure

6. Synthesis and materialization of a reaction-diffusion French flag pattern

Abstract: During embryo development, patterns of protein concentration appear in response to morphogen gradients. These patterns provide spatial and chemical information that directs the fate of the underlying cells. Here, we emulate this process within non-living matter and demonstrate the autonomous structuration of a synthetic material. Firstly, we use DNA-based reaction networks to synthesize a French flag, an archetypal pattern composed of three chemically-distinct zones with sharp borders whose synthetic analogue has remained elusive. A bistable network within a shallow concentration gradient creates an immobile, sharp and long-lasting concentration front through a reaction-diffusion mechanism. The combination of two bistable circuits generates a French flag pattern whose 'phenotype' can be reprogrammed by network mutation. Secondly, these concentration patterns control the macroscopic organization of DNA-decorated particles, inducing a French flag pattern of colloidal aggregation. 7. Multivariate information measures: a unification using M\'obius operators on subset lattices

Abstract: Information related measures are useful tools for multi variable data analysis, as measures of dependence among variables, and as descriptions of order in biological and physical systems. Information related measures, like marginal entropies, mutual / interaction / multi-information, have been used in a number of fields including descriptions of systems complexity and biological data analysis. The mathematical relationships among these measures are therefore of significant interest. Relations between common information measures include the duality relations based on M\"obius inversion on lattices. These are the direct consequence of the symmetries of the lattices of the sets of variables (subsets ordered by inclusion). While the mathematical properties and relationships among these information-related measures are of significant interest, there has been, to our knowledge, no systematic examination of the full range of relationships and no unification of this diverse range of functions into a single formalism as we do here. In this paper we define operators on functions on these lattices based on the M\"obius inversion idea that map the functions into one another (M\"obius operators.) We show that these operators form a simple group isomorphic to the symmetric group S3. Relations among the set of functions on the lattice are transparently expressed in terms of the operator algebra, and, applied to the information measures, can be used to derive a wide range of relationships among measures. We describe a direct relation between sums of conditional log-likelihoods and previously defined dependency measures. The algebra is naturally generalized which yields more extensive relationships. This formalism provides a fundamental unification of information related measures, but isomorphism of all distributive lattices with the subset lattice implies broad potential application of these results., Comment: 26 pages, 6 figures, 2 tabels

8. Programmable reaction-diffusion fronts

Abstract: Morphogenesis is central to biology but remains largely unexplored in chemistry. Reaction-diffusion (RD) mechanisms are, however, essential to understand how shape emerges in the living world. While numerical methods confirm the incredible potential of RD mechanisms to generate patterns, their experimental implementation, despite great efforts, has yet to surpass the paradigm of stationary Turing patterns achieved 25 years ago. The principal reason for our difficulty to synthesize arbitrary concentration patterns from scratch is the lack of fully programmable reaction-diffusion systems. To solve this problem we introduce here a DNA-based system where kinetics and diffusion can be individually tuned. We demonstrate the capability to precisely control reaction-diffusion properties with an autocatalytic network that propagates in a one-dimensional reactor with uniform velocity, typically 100 {\mu}m min-1. The diffusion coefficient of the propagating species can be reduced up to a factor 2.7 using a species-specific strategy relying on self-assembled hydrodynamic drags. Our approach is modular as we illustrate by designing three alternative front generating systems, two of which can pass through each other with little interaction. Importantly, the strategies to control kinetics and diffusion are orthogonal to each other resulting in simple programming rules. Our results can be quantitatively predicted from first-principle RD equations and are in excellent agreement with a generalized Fisher- Kolmogorov-Petrovskii-Piscunov analytical model. Together, these advances open the way for the rational engineering of far-from-equilibrium arbitrary patterns and could lead to the synthesis of self-organizing materials.

Abstract: Mutational robustness is the extent to which an organism has evolved to withstand the effects of deleterious mutations. We explored the extent of mutational robustness in the budding yeast by genome wide dosage suppressor analysis of 53 conditional lethal mutations in cell division cycle and RNA synthesis related genes, revealing 660 suppressor interactions of which 642 are novel. This collection has several distinctive features, including high co-occurrence of mutant-suppressor pairs within protein modules, highly correlated functions between the pairs, and higher diversity of functions among the co-suppressors than previously observed. Dosage suppression of essential genes encoding RNA polymerase subunits and chromosome cohesion complex suggest a surprising degree of functional plasticity of macromolecular complexes and the existence od degenerate pathways for circumventing potentially lethal mutations. The utility of dosage-suppressor networks is illustrated by the discovery of a novel connection between chromosome cohesion-condensation pathways involving homologous recombination, and Huntington's disease., Comment: 42 pages, 2 tables, 6 Figures. 10. On Lattices and the Dualities of Information Measures

Abstract: Measures of dependence among variables, and measures of information content and shared information have become valuable tools of multi-variable data analysis. Information measures, like marginal entropies, mutual and multi-information, have a number of significant advantages over more standard statistical methods, like their reduced sensitivity to sampling limitations than statistical estimates of probability densities. There are also interesting applications of these measures to the theory of complexity and to statistical mechanics. Their mathematical properties and relationships are therefore of interest at several levels. Of the interesting relationships between common information measures, perhaps none are more intriguing and as elegant as the duality relationships based on Mobius inversions. These inversions are directly related to the lattices (posets) that describe these sets of variables and their multi-variable measures. In this paper we describe extensions of the duality previously noted by Bell to a range of measures, and show how the structure of the lattice determines fundamental relationships of these functions. Our major result is a set of interlinked duality relations among marginal entropies, interaction information, and conditional interaction information. The implications of these results include a flexible range of alternative formulations of information-based measures, and a new set of sum rules that arise from path-independent sums on the lattice. Our motivation is to advance the fundamental integration of this set of ideas and relations, and to show explicitly the ways in which all these measures are interrelated through lattice properties. These ideas can be useful in constructing theories of complexity, descriptions of large scale stochastic processes and systems, and in devising algorithms and approximations for computations in multi-variable data analysis., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: The luminosity in the ZEUS detector was measured using photons from electron bremsstrahlung. In 2001 the HERA collider was upgraded for operation at higher luminosity. At the same time the luminosity-measuring system of the ZEUS experiment was modified to tackle the expected higher photon rate and synchrotron radiation. The existing lead-scintillator calorimeter was equipped with radiation hard scintillator tiles and shielded against synchrotron radiation. In addition, a magnetic spectrometer was installed to measure the luminosity independently using photons converted in the beam-pipe exit window. The redundancy provided a reliable and robust luminosity determination with a systematic uncertainty of 1.7%. 12. Describing the complexity of systems: multi-variable 'set complexity' and the information basis of systems biology

Abstract: Context dependence is central to the description of complexity. Keying on the pairwise definition of "set complexity" we use an information theory approach to formulate general measures of systems complexity. We examine the properties of multi-variable dependency starting with the concept of interaction information. We then present a new measure for unbiased detection of multi-variable dependency, "differential interaction information." This quantity for two variables reduces to the pairwise "set complexity" previously proposed as a context-dependent measure of information in biological systems. We generalize it here to an arbitrary number of variables. Critical limiting properties of the "differential interaction information" are key to the generalization. This measure extends previous ideas about biological information and provides a more sophisticated basis for study of complexity. The properties of "differential interaction information" also suggest new approaches to data analysis. Given a data set of system measurements differential interaction information can provide a measure of collective dependence, which can be represented in hypergraphs describing complex system interaction patterns. We investigate this kind of analysis using simulated data sets. The conjoining of a generalized set complexity measure, multi-variable dependency analysis, and hypergraphs is our central result. The analysis is based on a data sample collected between 1996 and 2007, amounting to 496 pb-1 of integrated luminosity. The Z0 was measured in the hadronic decay mode. The elasticity of the events was ensured by a cut on eta_max < 3.0, where eta_max is the maximum pseudorapidity of energy deposits in the calorimeter defined with respect to the proton beam direction. A signal was observed at the Z0 mass. The cross section of the reaction ep -> eZ0p* was measured to be sigma(ep -> eZ0p*) = 0.13 +/- 0.06 (stat.) +/- 0.01 (syst.) pb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 0.16 pb. Abstract: Measurements of neutral current cross sections for deep inelastic scattering in e+p collisions at HERA with a longitudinally polarised positron beam are presented. The single-differential cross-sections d(sigma)/dQ2, d(sigma)/dx and d(sigma)/dy and the reduced cross-section were measured in the kinematic region Q2 > 185 GeV2 and y < 0.9, where Q2 is the four-momentum transfer squared, x the Bjorken scaling variable, and y the inelasticity of the interaction. The measurements were performed separately for positively and negatively polarised positron beams. The measurements are based on an integrated luminosity of 135.5 pb-1 collected with the ZEUS detector in 2006 and 2007 at a centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV. The structure functions F3 and F3(gamma)Z were determined by combining the e+p results presented in this paper with previously published e-p neutral current results. The asymmetry parameter A+ is used to demonstrate the parity violation predicted in electroweak interactions. Abstract: Inclusive-jet cross sections have been measured in the reaction ep->e+jet+X for photon virtuality Q2 < 1 GeV2 and gamma-p centre-of-mass energies in the region 142 < W(gamma-p) < 293 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 300 pb-1. Jets were identified using the kT, anti-kT or SIScone jet algorithms in the laboratory frame. Single-differential cross sections are presented as functions of the jet transverse energy, ETjet, and pseudorapidity, etajet, for jets with ETjet > 17 GeV and -1 < etajet < 2.5. In addition, measurements of double-differential inclusive-jet cross sections are presented as functions of ETjet in different regions of etajet. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations give a good description of the measurements, except for jets with low ETjet and high etajet. The influence of non-perturbative effects not related to hadronisation was studied. Measurements of the ratios of cross sections using different jet algorithms are also presented; the measured ratios are well described by calculations including up to O(alphas2) terms. Values of alphas(Mz) were extracted from the measurements and the energy-scale dependence of the coupling was determined. The value of alphas(Mz) extracted from the measurements based on the kT jet algorithm is alphas(Mz) = 0.1206 +0.0023 -0.0022 (exp.) +0.0042 -0.0035 (th.); the results from the anti-kT and SIScone algorithms are compatible with this value and have a similar precision., Comment: 53 pages, 17 figures

Abstract: The exclusive electroproduction of two pions in the mass range 0.4 < M{\pi}{\pi} < 2.5 GeV has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 82 pb-1. The analysis was carried out in the kinematic range of 2 < Q2 < 80 GeV2, 32 < W < 180 GeV and |t| < 0.6 GeV2, where Q2 is the photon virtuality, W is the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy and t is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The two-pion invariant-mass distribution is interpreted in terms of the pion electromagnetic form factor, |F(M{\pi}{\pi})|, assuming that the studied mass range includes the contributions of the {\rho}, {\rho}' and {\rho}" vector-meson states. The masses and widths of the resonances were obtained and the Q2 dependence of the cross-section ratios {\sigma}({\rho}' \rightarrow {\pi}{\pi})/{\sigma}({\rho}) and {\sigma}({\rho}" \rightarrow {\pi}{\pi})/{\sigma}({\rho}) was extracted. The pion form factor obtained in the present analysis is compared to that obtained in e+e- \rightarrow {\pi}+{\pi}-., Comment: 24 pages, including 11 figures

Abstract: A search for single-top production, $ep \rightarrow etX$, has been performed with the ZEUS detector at HERA using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $0.37\fbi$. No evidence for top production was found, consistent with the expectation from the Standard Model. Limits were computed for single-top production via flavour changing neutral current transitions. The result was combined with a previous ZEUS result yielding a total luminosity of 0.50fb-1. A 95% credibility level upper limit of 0.13 pb was obtained for the cross section at the centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=315\gev$., Comment: Included approximate NLO and NNLO corrections to the cross section calculation used to derive coupling limit for the top production mediated by gamma exchange. 30 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables. Abstract: Photoproduction of beauty and charm quarks in events with at least two jets has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 133 $pb^{-1}$. The fractions of jets containing b and c quarks were extracted using the invariant mass of charged tracks associated with secondary vertices and the decay-length significance of these vertices. Differential cross sections as a function of jet transverse momentum, $p_{T}^{\text{jet}}$, and pseudorapidity, $\eta^{\text{jet}}$, were measured. Abstract: The production of beauty quarks in ep interactions has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA for exchanged four-momentum squared Q^2 > 10 GeV^2, using an integrated luminosity of 363 pb^{-1}. The beauty events were identified using electrons from semileptonic b decays with a transverse momentum 0.9 < p_T^e < 8 GeV and pseudorapidity |eta^e| < 1.5. Cross sections for beauty production were measured and compared with next-to-leading-order QCD calculations. Abstract: Beauty production in deep inelastic scattering with events in which a muon and a jet are observed in the final state has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 114 pb^-1. The fraction of events with beauty quarks in the data was determined using the distribution of the transverse momentum of the muon relative to the jet. The cross section for beauty production was measured in the kinematic range of photon virtuality, Q^2 > 2 Gev^2, and inelasticity, 0.05 < y < 0.7, with the requirement of a muon and a jet. Total and differential cross sections are presented and compared to QCD predictions. 24. Markov Logic Networks in the Analysis of Genetic Data

Abstract: Complex, non-additive genetic interactions are common and can be critical in determining phenotypes. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and similar statistical studies of linkage data, however, assume additive models of gene interactions in looking for genotype-phenotype associations. These statistical methods view the compound effects of multiple genes on a phenotype as a sum of partial influences of each individual gene and can often miss a substantial part of the heritable effect. Such methods do not use any biological knowledge about underlying genotype-phenotype mechanisms. Modeling approaches from the AI field that incorporate deterministic knowledge into models to perform statistical analysis can be applied to include prior knowledge in genetic analysis. We chose to use the most general such approach, Markov Logic Networks (MLNs), as a framework for combining deterministic knowledge with statistical analysis. Using simple, logistic regression-type MLNs we have been able to replicate the results of traditional statistical methods. Moreover, we show that even with simple models we are able to go beyond finding independent markers linked to a phenotype by using joint inference that avoids an independence assumption. The method is applied to genetic data on yeast sporulation, a phenotype governed by non-linear gene interactions. In addition to detecting all of the previously identified loci associated with sporulation, our method is able to identify four loci with small effects. Since their effect on sporulation is small, these four loci were not detected with methods that do not account for dependence between markers due to gene interactions. 25. Set-based complexity and biological information

Abstract: It is not obvious what fraction of all the potential information residing in the molecules and structures of living systems is significant or meaningful to the system. Sets of random sequences or identically repeated sequences, for example, would be expected to contribute little or no useful information to a cell. This issue of quantitation of information is important since the ebb and flow of biologically significant information is essential to our quantitative understanding of biological function and evolution. Motivated specifically by these problems of biological information, we propose here a class of measures to quantify the contextual nature of the information in sets of objects, based on Kolmogorov's intrinsic complexity. Such measures discount both random and redundant information and are inherent in that they do not require a defined state space to quantify the information. The maximization of this new measure, which can be formulated in terms of the universal information distance, appears to have several useful and interesting properties, some of which we illustrate with examples.

Abstract: An endogenous molecular-cellular network for both normal and abnormal functions is assumed to exist. This endogenous network forms a nonlinear stochastic dynamical system, with many stable attractors in its functional landscape. Normal or abnormal robust states can be decided by this network in a manner similar to the neural network. In this context cancer is hypothesized as one of its robust intrinsic states. This hypothesis implies that a nonlinear stochastic mathematical cancer model is constructible based on available experimental data and its quantitative prediction is directly testable. Within such model the genesis and progression of cancer may be viewed as stochastic transitions between different attractors. Thus it further suggests that progressions are not arbitrary. Other important issues on cancer, such as genetic vs epigenetics, double-edge effect, dormancy, are discussed in the light of present hypothesis. Abstract: Phage lambda is one of the most studied biological models in modern molecular biology. Over the past 50 years quantitative experimental knowledge on this biological model has been accumulated at all levels: physics, chemistry, genomics, proteomics, functions, and more. All its components have been known to a great detail. The theoretical task has been to integrate its components to make the organism working quantitatively in a harmonic manner. This would test our biological understanding and would lay a solid fundamental for further explorations and applications, an obvious goal of systems biology. One of the outstanding challenges in doing so has been the so-called stability puzzle of lambda switch: the biologically observed robustness and its difficult mathematical reconstruction based on known experimental values. In this chapter we review the recent theoretical and experimental efforts on tackling this problem. An emphasis is put on the minimum quantitative modeling where a successful numerical agreement between experiments and modeling has been achieved. 28. Duplication Models for Biological Networks

Abstract: Are biological networks different from other large complex networks? Both large biological and non-biological networks exhibit power-law graphs (number of nodes with degree k, N(k) ~ k-b) yet the exponents, b, fall into different ranges. This may be because duplication of the information in the genome is a dominant evolutionary force in shaping biological networks (like gene regulatory networks and protein-protein interaction networks), and is fundamentally different from the mechanisms thought to dominate the growth of most non-biological networks (such as the internet [1-4]). The preferential choice models non-biological networks like web graphs can only produce power-law graphs with exponents greater than 2 [1-4,8]. We use combinatorial probabilistic methods to examine the evolution of graphs by duplication processes and derive exact analytical relationships between the exponent of the power law and the parameters of the model. Both full duplication of nodes (with all their connections) as well as partial duplication (with only some connections) are analyzed. We demonstrate that partial duplication can produce power-law graphs with exponents less than 2, consistent with current data on biological networks. The power-law exponent for large graphs depends only on the growth process, not on the starting graph.

IT WAS FOUND THAT (1) CHILDREN'S MISPRONUNCIATIONS REFLECTED RECORDING DISC SHORTCOMINGS, (2) THE SING-SONG EFFECT OF CHORUS REPETITION HAD A NEGATIVE EFFECT ON NORMAL PACE, RHYTHM, AND INTONATION PATTERNS, AND (3) THE CHILDREN DID NOT MASTER THE PHONETICS OF THE LANGUAGE STUDIED. 31. Soft X-ray observation of supernova remnant IC 443

Abstract: The low-energy X-ray spectrum (0.15-3.0 keV) and X-ray centroid position of the supernova remnant IC 443 have been determined using data obtained by the HEAO-1 A-2 experiment. The spectrum exhibits a low-energy excess over and above that predicted by an extrapolation of the higher-energy spectrum determined by Parkes et al (1976). The excess can be attributed to line emission, predominately from high-ionization states of iron from a plasma at a temperature of 7.7 + or - 0.6 or -4.3 x 10 to the 6th K. Other models which fit the data are discussed, in particular, a lower-temperature component required to explain the Fe X optical emission.

32. Soft X-ray observations of the supernova remnants HB 3 and 3C 58

Abstract: The HEAO 1 A-2 low energy detectors have discovered soft X-ray emission from a source positionally coincident with the supernova remnant HB 3. The flux in the energy range 0.3-2.2 keV is about 6 x 10 to the -11th ergs per sq cm s. The spectral data are fitted to a hydrogen thermal bremsstrahlung model, and the physical parameters of the supernova remnant are estimated. The age derived is about 21,000 years, and the initial blast energy is about 3.1 x 10 to the 50th ergs. Upper limits to the soft X-ray flux and the luminosity of the supernova remnant 3 C 58 are also derived.
