Metastases increase the risk of fracture when affecting the femur. Consequently, clinicians need to know if the patients femur can withstand the stress of daily activities. The current tools used in clinics are not sufficiently precise. A new method, the CT-scan-based finite element analysis, gives good predictive results. However, none of the existing models were tested for reproducibility. This is a critical issue to address in order to apply the technique on a large cohort around the world to help evaluate bone metastatic fracture risk in patients. A pilot television series reached some 100,000 Ontario elementary school students with a series on meteorology and ecology. Flexible interactive opportunities (via broadcast, newsletter, phone, mail, personal contact) were utilized; resources not available were provided, while at the same time local options were preserved and encouraged. Use of the phone was limited during the pilot to protect against jamming the system and against incurring project costs beyond means. A questionnaire surveyed student and faculty opinion on the subject of involvement and interaction. The student TV module was found to be the most important interactive component. Ninety-four percent of the teachers responding to a followup questionnaire said the series was more useful than an ordinary educational television series. (WCM)

Ryerson Open College in collaboration with the Ontario Educational Communications Authority, offered a multimedia, introductory credit course in psychology in 1972. An evaluation was completed based on two questionnaires, each completed by a majority of the enrolled students. Student grades and dropout rates were examined relative to students' age, sex, employment status, previous education, and socioeconomic status. Students also rated the relative merits of televised lectures, radio discussions, and other educational activities, and these results were correlated to demographic factors. The benefits and disadvantages of the multimedia, home-study approach were examined relative to its cost. (EMH)

Federal civil litigation in which a faculty inventor challenged the university's right to share in proceeds from his invention is examined. Issues of employment contracts, the university research office's responsibility for monitoring faculty research, and the role of patenting and licensing firms are considered. Implications for university policy are noted. (MSE)
