In this paper, we study geostrophic turbulence without external forcing or dissipation, using a Casimir-preserving numerical method. The research examines the formation of large zonal jets, common in geophysical flows, especially in giant gas planets. These jets form due to the east-west stretching of vortices, influenced by the gradient of the Coriolis parameter, leading to a critical latitude beyond which jets do not form. Using a global quasi-geostrophic model with a fully latitude-dependent Coriolis parameter, we investigate this critical latitude, which is theorized to depend only on the product of the Rossby number and the Lamb parameter. By simulating random flow fields, the critical latitude was identified through zonally averaged zonal velocity profiles. Results align with geostrophic theory, especially near typical Rossby and Lamb parameter values for Earth's atmosphere. However, in the regime of weak rotation (high Rossby numbers) and strong stratification (high Lamb values), no clear critical latitude emerges; instead, zonal jet amplitude and width decrease gradually towards the poles. This research paves the way for further study of jet dynamics under a fully latitude-dependent Coriolis parameter.

Accurate long-term predictions of large-scale flow features on planets are crucial for understanding global atmospheric and oceanic systems, necessitating the development of numerical methods that can preserve essential physical structures over extended simulation periods without excessive computational costs. Recent advancements in the study of global single-layer barotropic models have led to novel numerical methods based on Lie-Poisson discretization that preserve energy, enstrophy and higher-order moments of potential vorticity. This work extends this approach to more complex stratified quasi-geostrophic (QG) systems on the sphere. In this work, we present a formulation of the multi-layer QG equations on the full globe. This allows for extending the Lie-Poisson discretization to multi-layer QG models, ensuring consistency with the underlying structure and enabling long-term simulations without additional regularization. The numerical method is benchmarked through simulations of forced geostrophic turbulence and the long-term behaviour of unforced multi-layered systems. These results demonstrate the structure-preserving properties and robustness of the proposed numerical method, paving the way for a better understanding of the role of high-order conserved quantities in large-scale geophysical flow dynamics.

Thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) has emerged as a promising platform for the realization of high performance chip-scale optical systems, spanning a range of applications from optical communications to microwave photonics. Such applications rely on the integration of multiple components onto a single platform. However, while many of these components have already been demonstrated on the TFLN platform, to date, a major bottleneck of the platform is the existence of a tunable, high-power, and narrow-linewidth on-chip laser. Here, we address this problem using photonic wire bonding to integrate optical amplifiers with a thin-film lithium niobate feedback circuit, and demonstrate an extended cavity diode laser yielding high on-chip power of 78 mW, side mode suppression larger than 60 dB and wide wavelength tunability over 43 nm. The laser frequency stability over short timescales shows an ultra-narrow intrinsic linewidth of 550 Hz. Long-term recordings indicate a high passive stability of the photonic wire bonded laser with 58 hours of mode-hop-free operation, with a trend in the frequency drift of only 4.4 MHz/h. AuDaLa is a recently introduced programming language that follows the new data autonomous paradigm. In this paradigm, small pieces of data execute functions autonomously. Considering the paradigm and the design choices of AuDaLa, it is interesting to determine the expressiveness of the language and to create verification methods for it. In this paper, we take our first steps to such a verification method by implementing Turing machines in AuDaLa and proving that implementation correct. Considering two antipodal observers in de Sitter space, we illustrate how spacetime connectivity between the holographic screens located on the (stretched) horizons emerges from holographic entanglement. To do so, we construct a covariant holographic entanglement entropy prescription in de Sitter space, including quantum corrections. While this prescription is inspired by the bilayer proposal, we argue that the monolayer proposal appears to be inconsistent. Entanglement wedge reconstruction implies an extension of static patch holography where the exterior region connecting the static patches is included, and reconstructible from the two screens. A phase transition occurs where there is an exchange of dominance between two competing quantum extremal surfaces, leading to a transfer of the encoding of the exterior region from one screen to the other. We present a geometric derivation of the quasi-geostrophic equations on the sphere, starting from the rotating shallow water equations. We utilise perturbation series methods in vorticity and divergence variables. The derivation employs asymptotic analysis techniques, leading to a global quasi-geostrophic potential vorticity model on the sphere without approximation of the Coriolis parameter. The resulting model forms a closed system for the evolution of potential vorticity with a rich mathematical structure, including Lagrangian and Hamiltonian descriptions. Formulated using the Lie-Poisson bracket reveals the geometric invariants of the quasi-geostrophic model. Motivated by these geometric results, simulations of quasi-geostrophic flow on the sphere are presented based on structure-preserving Lie-Poisson time-integration. We explicitly demonstrate the preservation of Casimir invariants and show that the hyperbolic quasi-geostrophic equations can be simulated in a stable manner over long time. A closure model is presented for large-eddy simulation (LES) based on the three-dimensional variational data assimilation algorithm. The approach aims at reconstructing high-fidelity kinetic energy spectra in coarse numerical simulations by including feedback control to represent unresolved dynamics interactions in the flow as stochastic processes. The forcing uses statistics obtained from offline high-fidelity data and requires only few parameters compared to the number of degrees of freedom of LES. This modeling strategy is applied to geostrophic turbulence on the sphere and enables simulating indefinitely at reduced costs. We prove the Strominger-Thompson quantum Bousso bound in the infinite class of conformal vacua in semiclassical JT gravity, with postive or negative cosmological constant. The Bousso-Fisher-Leichenauer-Wall quantum Bousso bound follows from an analogous derivation, requiring only initial quantum non-expansion. In this process, we show that the quantity ${2\pi k^{\mu}k^{\nu}<:T_{\mu\nu}:>-S''-\frac{6}{c}(S')^2}$ vanishes in any vacuum state, entailing a stronger version of Wall's quantum null energy condition. We extend a recent de Sitter holographic proposal and entanglement entropy prescription to generic closed FRW cosmologies in arbitrary dimensions, and propose that for large classes of bouncing and Big Bang/Big Crunch cosmologies, the full spacetime can be encoded holographically on two holographic screens, associated to two antipodal observers. In the expanding phase, the two screens lie at the apparent horizons. In the contracting phase, there is an infinite number of possible trajectories of the holographic screens, which can be grouped in equivalence classes. In each class the effective holographic theory can be derived from a pair of ``parent'' screens on the apparent horizons. A number of cases including moduli dominated cosmologies escape our discussion, and it is expected that two antipodal observers and their associated screens do not suffice to reconstruct these cosmologies. The leading contributions to the entanglement entropy between the screens arise from a minimal extremal trapped or anti-trapped surface lying in the region between them. This picture entails a time-dependent realization of the ER=EPR conjecture, where an effective geometrical bridge connecting the screens via the minimal extremal surface emerges from entanglement. For the Big Crunch contracting cases, the screens disentangle and the geometrical bridge closes off when the minimal extremal trapped sphere hits the Big Crunch singularity at a finite time before the collapse of the Universe. Climate change mitigation in urban mobility requires policies reconfiguring urban form to increase accessibility and facilitate low-carbon modes of transport. However, current policy research has insufficiently assessed urban form effects on car travel at three levels: (1) Causality -- Can causality be established beyond theoretical and correlation-based analyses? (2) Generalizability -- Do relationships hold across different cities and world regions? (3) Context specificity -- How do relationships vary across neighborhoods of a city? Here, we address all three gaps via causal graph discovery and explainable machine learning to detect urban form effects on intra-city car travel, based on mobility data of six cities across three continents. We find significant causal effects of urban form on trip emissions and inter-feature effects, which had been neglected in previous work. Our results demonstrate that destination accessibility matters most overall, while low density and low connectivity also sharply increase CO$_2$ emissions. These general trends are similar across cities but we find idiosyncratic effects that can lead to substantially different recommendations. In more monocentric cities, we identify spatial corridors -- about 10--50 km from the city center -- where subcenter-oriented development is more relevant than increased access to the main center. In this work, we consider a Shallow-Water Quasi Geostrophic equation on the sphere, as a model for global large-scale atmospheric dynamics. This equation, previously studied by Verkley (2009) and Schubert et al. (2009), possesses a rich geometric structure, called Lie-Poisson, and admits an infinite number of conserved quantities, called Casimirs. In this paper, we develop a Casimir preserving numerical method for long-time simulations of this equation. The method develops in two steps: firstly, we construct an N-dimensional Lie-Poisson system that converges to the continuous one in the limit $N \to \infty$; secondly, we integrate in time the finite-dimensional system using an isospectral time integrator, developed by Modin and Viviani (2020). We demonstrate the efficacy of this computational method by simulating a flow on the entire sphere for different values of the Lamb parameter. We particularly focus on rotation-induced effects, such as the formation of jets. In agreement with shallow water models of the atmosphere, we observe the formation of robust latitudinal jets and a decrease in the zonal wind amplitude with latitude. In the context of de Sitter static-patch holography, two prescriptions have been put forward for holographic entanglement entropy computations, the monolayer and bilayer proposals. In this paper, we reformulate both prescriptions in a covariant way and extend them to include quantum corrections. We argue that the bilayer proposal is self-consistent, while the monolayer proposal exhibits contradictory behavior. In fact, the bilayer proposal leads to a stronger holographic description, in which the full spacetime is encoded on two screens at the cosmological horizons. At the classical level, we find large degeneracies of minimal extremal homologous surfaces, localized at the horizons, which can be lifted by quantum corrections. The entanglement wedges of subregions of the screens exhibit non-trivial behaviors, hinting at the existence of interesting phase transitions and non-locality in the holographic theory. In particular, while each screen encodes its corresponding static patch, we show that the entanglement wedge of the screen with the larger quantum area extends and covers the causal diamond between the screens, with a phase transition occurring when the quantum areas of the screens become equal. We argue that the capacity of the screens to encode the region between them is lost, when these are pushed further in the static patches of the observers and placed on stretched horizons., Comment: 83 pages, 11 figures. Hybrid integrated diode lasers have so far been realized using silicon, polymer, and silicon nitride (Si3N4) waveguide platforms for extending on-chip tunable light engines from the infrared throughout the visible range. Here we demonstrate the first hybrid integrated laser using the aluminum oxide (Al2O3) deep-UV capable waveguide platform. By permanently coupling low-loss Al2O3 frequency-tunable Vernier feedback circuits with GaN double-pass amplifiers in a hermetically sealed housing, we demonstrate the first extended cavity diode laser (ECDL) in the near UV. The laser shows a maximum fiber-coupled output power of 0.74 mW, corresponding to about 3.5 mW on chip, and tunes more than 4.4 nm in wavelength from 408.1 nm to 403.7 nm. Macro-energy system modelling is used by decision-makers to steer the global energy transition toward an affordable, sustainable and reliable future. Closed-source models are the current standard for most policy and industry decisions. However, open models have proven to be competitive alternatives that promote science, robust technical analysis, collaboration and transparent policy decision-making. Yet, two issues slow the adoption: open models are often designed with limited geographic scope, hindering synergies from collaboration, or are based on low spatially resolved data, limiting their use. Here we introduce PyPSA-Earth, the first open-source global energy system model with data in high spatial and temporal resolution. It enables large-scale collaboration by providing a tool that can model the world energy system or any subset of it. This work is derived from the European PyPSA-Eur model using new data and functions. It is suitable for operational as well as combined generation, storage and transmission expansion studies. The model provides two main features: (1) customizable data extraction and preparation scripts with global coverage and (2) a PyPSA energy modelling framework integration. The data includes electricity demand, generation and medium to high-voltage networks from open sources, yet additional data can be further integrated. A broad range of clustering and grid meshing strategies help adapt the model to computational and practical needs. A data validation for the entire African continent is performed and the optimization features are tested with a 2060 net-zero planning study for Nigeria. The demonstration shows that the presented developments can build a highly detailed energy system model for energy planning studies to support policy and technical decision-making. Common Neural Architecture Search methods generate large amounts of candidate architectures that need training in order to assess their performance and find an optimal architecture. To minimize the search time we use different performance estimation strategies. The effectiveness of such strategies varies in terms of accuracy and fit and query time. This study proposes a new method, EmProx Score (Embedding Proximity Score). Similar to Neural Architecture Optimization (NAO), this method maps candidate architectures to a continuous embedding space using an encoder-decoder framework. The performance of candidates is then estimated using weighted kNN based on the embedding vectors of architectures of which the performance is known. Performance estimations of this method are comparable to the MLP performance predictor used in NAO in terms of accuracy, while being nearly nine times faster to train compared to NAO. Benchmarking against other performance estimation strategies currently used shows similar to better accuracy, while being five up to eighty times faster.

In this paper, we study the possibility to obtain a massless scalar boson for which quantum corrections to the mass vanish at all loop-order, which has been recently understood to be due to a shift symmetry making the scalar a Goldstone boson. We present the effective four-dimensional Lagrangian of a six-dimensional gauge theory compactified on a torus with magnetic flux. Because of this magnetic field, a symmetry of translation in the extra dimensions is broken which implies the existence of a massless scalar boson. We then explicitly check that a model with two U(1) gauge symmetries contains a scalar boson with finite mass but protected from large quantum corrections. Finally, we study the presence of tachyons in the model with non-abelian gauge symmetry. In particular, we propose a way to eliminate these tachyons and we compute the full mass spectrum of the scalars in this theory. We present the full next-to-leading-order electroweak and QCD corrections to vector-boson scattering into a pair of off-shell opposite-sign W bosons decaying into leptons of different flavour at the LHC. We include full leading-order predictions for the irreducible background. Explicitly, we investigate the process ${\rm pp \to e^+ \nu_e\mu^-\bar\nu_\mu jj} + X$ at leading orders $O(\alpha^6)$, $O(\rm\alpha_s\alpha^5)$, $O(\rm\alpha_s^2\alpha^4)$, supplemented by the loop-induced $O(\rm\alpha_s^4\alpha^4)$ contribution, and at next-to-leading orders $O(\alpha^7)$ and $O(\rm\alpha_s\alpha^6)$ in two setups providing fiducial cross sections as well as differential distributions. We take full account of photon-induced next-to-leading-order contributions, which prove to be non negligible. With $-11.4\%$ and $-6.7\%$ in the two setups, the electroweak corrections are smaller than for other vector-boson-scattering processes. This can be traced back to the presence of the Higgs-boson resonance in the fiducial phase space, whose effects we analyse within an additional unphysical, but manifestly gauge-invariant setup. The QCD corrections amount to $-5.1\%$ and $-21.6\%$ in the two setups. The iRead EU Project has released literacy games for Spanish, German, Greek, and English for L1 and L2 acquisition. In order to understand the impact of these games on reading skills for L1 German pupils, the authors employed an eye-tracking recording of pupils' readings on a weekly basis as part of an after-school reading club. This work seeks to first understand how to interpret the eye-tracker data for such a study. Five pupils participated in the project and read short texts over the course of five weeks. The resulting data set was extensive enough to perform preliminary analysis on how to use the eye-tracking data to provide information on skill acquisition looking at pupils' reading accuracy and speed. Given our set-up, we can show that the eye-tracker is accurate enough to measure relative reading speed between long and short vowels for selected 2-syllable words. As a result, eye-tracking data can visualize three different types of beginning readers: memorizers, pattern learners, and those with reading problems. Tilt-series alignment is crucial to obtaining high-resolution reconstructions in cryo-electron tomography. Beam-induced local deformation of the sample is hard to estimate from the low-contrast sample alone, and often requires fiducial gold bead markers. The state-of-the-art approach for deformation estimation uses (semi-)manually labelled marker locations in projection data to fit the parameters of a polynomial deformation model. Manually-labelled marker locations are difficult to obtain when data are noisy or markers overlap in projection data. We propose an alternative mathematical approach for simultaneous marker localization and deformation estimation by extending a grid-free super-resolution algorithm first proposed in the context of single-molecule localization microscopy. Our approach does not require labelled marker locations; instead, we use an image-based loss where we compare the forward projection of markers with the observed data. We equip this marker localization scheme with an additional deformation estimation component and solve for a reduced number of deformation parameters. Using extensive numerical studies on marker-only samples, we show that our approach automatically finds markers and reliably estimates sample deformation without labelled marker data. We further demonstrate the applicability of our approach for a broad range of model mismatch scenarios, including experimental electron tomography data of gold markers on ice.

A recent line of work has established intriguing connections between the generalization/compression properties of a deep neural network (DNN) model and the so-called layer weights' stable ranks. Intuitively, the latter are indicators of the effective number of parameters in the net. In this work, we address some natural questions regarding the space of DNNs conditioned on the layers' stable rank, where we study feed-forward dynamics, initialization, training and expressivity. To this end, we first propose a random DNN model with a new sampling scheme based on stable rank. Then, we show how feed-forward maps are affected by the constraint and how training evolves in the overparametrized regime (via Neural Tangent Kernels). Our results imply that stable ranks appear layerwise essentially as linear factors whose effect accumulates exponentially depthwise. Recent advances in practical quantum computing have led to a variety of cloud-based quantum computing platforms that allow researchers to evaluate their algorithms on noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices. A common property of quantum computers is that they can exhibit instances of true randomness as opposed to pseudo-randomness obtained from classical systems. Investigating the effects of such true quantum randomness in the context of machine learning is appealing, and recent results vaguely suggest that benefits can indeed be achieved from the use of quantum random numbers. To shed some more light on this topic, we empirically study the effects of hardware-biased quantum random numbers on the initialization of artificial neural network weights in numerical experiments. We find no statistically significant difference in comparison with unbiased quantum random numbers as well as biased and unbiased random numbers from a classical pseudo-random number generator. Vector-boson scattering into two Z bosons at the LHC is a key channel for the exploration of the electroweak sector of the Standard Model. It allows for the full reconstruction of the scattering process but at the price of a huge irreducible background. For the first time, we present full next-to-leading-order predictions for $pp \to e^+e^-\mu^+\mu^-jj+X$ including all electroweak and QCD contributions for vector-boson scattering signal and irreducible background. The results are presented in the form of cross sections and differential distributions. Insight into the electroweak (EW) and Higgs sectors can be achieved through measurements of vector boson scattering (VBS) processes. The scattering of EW bosons are rare processes that are precisely predicted in the Standard Model (SM) and are closely related to the Higgs mechanism. Modifications to VBS processes are also predicted in models of physics beyond the SM (BSM), for example through changes to the Higgs boson couplings to gauge bosons and the resonant production of new particles. In the present work we study classifiers' decision boundaries via Brownian motion processes in ambient data space and associated probabilistic techniques. Intuitively, our ideas correspond to placing a heat source at the decision boundary and observing how effectively the sample points warm up. We are largely motivated by the search for a soft measure that sheds further light on the decision boundary's geometry. En route, we bridge aspects of potential theory and geometric analysis (Mazya, 2011, Grigoryan-Saloff-Coste, 2002) with active fields of ML research such as adversarial examples and generalization bounds. First, we focus on the geometric behavior of decision boundaries in the light of adversarial attack/defense mechanisms. Experimentally, we observe a certain capacitory trend over different adversarial defense strategies: decision boundaries locally become flatter as measured by isoperimetric inequalities (Ford et al, 2019); however, our more sensitive heat-diffusion metrics extend this analysis and further reveal that some non-trivial geometry invisible to plain distance-based methods is still preserved. Intuitively, we provide evidence that the decision boundaries nevertheless retain many persistent "wiggly and fuzzy" regions on a finer scale. Second, we show how Brownian hitting probabilities translate to soft generalization bounds which are in turn connected to compression and noise stability (Arora et al, 2018), and these bounds are significantly stronger if the decision boundary has controlled geometric features., Comment: Accepted as conference paper at ICLR 2021. 36 pages, 16 figures, comments welcome!

Variational quantum circuits build the foundation for various classes of quantum algorithms. In a nutshell, the weights of a parametrized quantum circuit are varied until the empirical sampling distribution of the circuit is sufficiently close to a desired outcome. Numerical first-order methods are applied frequently to fit the parameters of the circuit, but most of the time, the circuit itself, that is, the actual composition of gates, is fixed. Methods for optimizing the circuit design jointly with the weights have been proposed, but empirical results are rather scarce. Here, we consider a simple evolutionary strategy that addresses the trade-off between finding appropriate circuit architectures and parameter tuning. We evaluate our method both via simulation and on actual quantum hardware. Our benchmark problems include the transverse field Ising Hamiltonian and the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin model. Despite the shortcomings of current noisy intermediate-scale quantum hardware, we find only a minor slowdown on actual quantum machines compared to simulations. Moreover, we investigate which mutation operations most significantly contribute to the optimization. The results provide intuition on how randomized search heuristics behave on actual quantum hardware and lay out a path for further refinement of evolutionary quantum gate circuits., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures. Generating visible light with wide tunability and high coherence based on photonic integrated circuits is of high interest for applications in biophotonics, precision metrology and quantum technology. Here we present the first demonstration of a hybrid-integrated diode laser in the visible spectral range. Using an AlGaInP optical amplifier coupled to a low-loss Si3N4 feedback circuit based on microring resonators, we obtain a spectral coverage of 10.8 nm around 684.4 nm wavelength with up to 4.8 mW output power. We present the first calculation of the full next-to-leading-order electroweak and QCD corrections for vector-boson scattering (VBS) into a pair of Z bosons at the LHC. We consider specifically the process ${\rm pp\to e^{+}e^{-}\mu^{+}\mu^{-}jj}+X$ at orders $\mathcal{O}(\alpha^7)$ and $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s\alpha^6)$ and take all off-shell and interference contributions into account. Owing to the presence of enhanced Sudakov logarithms, the electroweak corrections amount to $-16\%$ of the leading-order electroweak fiducial cross section and induce significant shape distortions of differential distributions. The QCD corrections on the other hand are larger ($+24\%$) than typical QCD corrections in VBS. This originates from considering the full computation including tri-boson contributions in a rather inclusive phase space. Hybrid integrated semiconductor laser sources offering extremely narrow spectral linewidth as well as compatibility for embedding into integrated photonic circuits are of high importance for a wide range of applications. We present an overview on our recently developed hybrid-integrated diode lasers with feedback from low-loss silicon nitride (Si3N4 in SiO2) circuits, to provide sub-100-Hz-level intrinsic linewidths, up to 120 nm spectral coverage around 1.55 um wavelength, and an output power above 100 mW. We perform a comprehensive study of on-shell recursion relations for Born amplitudes in spontaneously broken gauge theories and identify the minimal shifts required to construct amplitudes with a given particle content and spin quantum numbers. We show that two-line or three-line shifts are sufficient to construct all amplitudes with five or more particles, apart from amplitudes involving longitudinal vector bosons or scalars, which may require at most five-line shifts. Despite their importance as subfields of mathematics and engineering, signal and image processing have not received much attention in the field of quantum computation. Cross-correlations are instrumental to all the aforementioned fields. In this article we help fill this void by providing two quantum algorithms, one for computing and storing cross-correlations, and one for implementing the expectation maximization maximum likelihood algorithm. Magnetic domain-walls (DWs) with a preferred chirality exhibit very efficient current-driven motion. Since structural inversion asymmetry (SIA) is required for their stability, the observation of chiral domain walls in highly symmetric Pt/Co/Pt is intriguing. Here, we tune the layer asymmetry in this system and observe, by current-assisted DW depinning experiments, a small chiral field which sensitively changes. Moreover, we convincingly link the observed efficiency of DW motion to the DW texture, using DW resistance as a direct probe for the internal orientation of the DW under the influence of in-plane fields. The very delicate effect of capping layer thickness on the chiral field allows for its accurate control, which is important in designing novel materials for optimal spin-orbit-torque-driven DW motion., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Perpendicularly magnetized materials have attracted tremendous interest due to their high anisotropy, which results in extremely narrow, nano-sized domain walls. As a result, the recently studied current-induced domain wall motion (CIDWM) in these materials promises to enable a novel class of data, memory, and logic devices. In this letter, we propose the spin Hall effect as a radically new mechanism for CIDWM. We are able to carefully tune the net spin Hall current in depinning experiments on Pt/Co/Pt nanowires, offering unique control over CIDWM. Furthermore, we determine that the depinning efficiency is intimately related to the internal structure of the domain wall, which we control by small fields along the nanowire. This new manifestation of CIDWM offers a very attractive new degree of freedom for manipulating domain wall motion by charge currents, and sheds light on the existence of contradicting reports on CIDWM in perpendicularly magnetized materials.

We theoretically and experimentally analyze the pinning of a magnetic domain wall (DW) at engineered anisotropy variations in Pt/Co/Pt strips with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. An analytical model is derived showing that a step in the anisotropy acts as an energy barrier for the DW. Quantitative measurements are performed showing that the anisotropy can be controlled by focused ion beam irradiation with Ga ions. This tool is used to experimentally study the field-induced switching of nanostrips which are locally irradiated. The boundary of the irradiated area indeed acts as a pinning barrier for the domain wall and the pinning strength increases with the anisotropy difference. Varying the thickness of the Co layer provides an additional way to tune the anisotropy, and it is shown that a thinner Co layer gives a higher starting anisotropy thereby allowing tunable DW pinning in a wider range of fields. Despite the relevance of current-induced magnetic domain wall (DW) motion for new spintronics applications, the exact details of the current-domain wall interaction are not yet understood. A property intimately related to this interaction is the intrinsic DW resistivity. Here, we investigate experimentally how the resistivity inside a DW depends on the wall width D, which is tuned using focused ion beam irradiation of Pt/Co/Pt strips. We observe the nucleation of individual DWs with Kerr microscopy, and measure resistance changes in real-time. A 1/D^2 dependence of DW resistivity is found, compatible with Levy-Zhang theory. Also quantitative agreement with theory is found by taking full account of the current flowing through each individual layer inside the multilayer stack., Comment: Submitted to Physical Review Letters 4 pages, 3 figures

We provide the explicit solutions of linear, left-invariant, (convection)-diffusion equations and the corresponding resolvent equations on the 2D-Euclidean motion group SE(2). These diffusion equations are forward Kolmogorov equations for stochastic processes for contour enhancement and completion. The solutions are group-convolutions with the corresponding Green's function, which we derive in explicit form. We mainly focus on the Kolmogorov equations for contour enhancement processes which, in contrast to the Kolmogorov equations for contour completion, do not include convection. The Green's functions of these left-invariant partial differential equations coincide with the heat-kernels on SE(2), which we explicitly derive. Then we compute completion distributions on SE(2) which are the product of a forward and a backward resolvent evolved from resp. source and sink distribution on SE(2). On the one hand, the modes of Mumford's direction process for contour completion coincide with elastica curves minimizing $\int \kappa^{2} + \epsilon ds$, related to zero-crossings of 2 left-invariant derivatives of the completion distribution. On the other hand, the completion measure for the contour enhancement concentrates on geodesics minimizing $\int \sqrt{\kappa^{2} + \epsilon} ds$. This motivates a comparison between geodesics and elastica, which are quite similar. However, we derive more practical analytic solutions for the geodesics. The theory is motivated by medical image analysis applications where enhancement of elongated structures in noisy images is required. We use left-invariant (non)-linear evolution processes for automated contour enhancement on invertible orientation scores, obtained from an image by means of a special type of unitary wavelet transform.

This comparative study was conducted for the Wisconsin Advisory Council on Vocational Education in an effort to identify strengths and weaknesses of program delivery and accomplishments of several States--Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Ohio--with a view towards making recommendations that would improve Wisconsin's total program approach and delivery. Methodology involved gathering, compiling, and analyzing data from Federal report forms, and from interviews and information gathered from the appropriate State departments. Some of the major goals accomplished by the study were the identification of the clientele and the degree to which they are served by vocational education and placed on jobs in each State; the determination of expenditures for vocational education and the sources of these funds; the identification of State and local structures that accomplish the delivery of vocational education in each State; and the determination of programs and procedures for vocational education personnel development and ways in which vocational education is reaching those in need. Fourteen council recommendations precede the description and discussion of the study, which is presented in six chapters: (1) Background of the Study, (2) Vocational Education Student Enrollments and Placement--Follow-up Activities, (3) Funding For Vocational Education in the Midwest, (4) State and Local Structures Effecting Vocational Education Delivery, (5) Career Education, and (6) Teachers, Teacher Education, and Certification. The appendixes include 40 items about each State's organizational and administrative functions, educational delivery systems, and teacher certification requirements. (HD)

This report, resulting from a project to develop a health occupations teacher education program (HOTEP) within the University of Wisconsin system, is presented in five sections and contains data and materials providing evidence to support the need for such a program. Section I discusses national health care needs and trends. Some existing HOTEPs are described in Section II. Colleges and universities giving information on their present programs included details pertaining to types of degrees and course offerings. Section III presents an estimate of the need for teachers of health occupations education at the secondary and postsecondary levels of instruction, along with a statement of the need for health care workers. Potential financing for HOTEP is discussed in Section IV, and recommendations and suggestions for the program are listed in Section V. Statistical data on Wisconsin health care education and employment are appended. (MF)

Suggestions are offered to help secondary and postsecondary language teachers think more deeply about speaking activities that prepare students for writing. Studied sex role expectations of 120 children from preschool, second, and fifth grade who named their vocational aspirations and chose whether a man or woman could do the work in 30 occupations. The study revealed a disparity between many children's perceptions of occupations and their own sex-typed aspirations. (JAC)

A study was conducted to identify the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective characteristics of handicapped students 14-21 years of age, and their perceived needs in the community and in future education and training in Wisconsin. A 20% sample of these students' teachers was surveyed using a mailed, machine-scoreable instrument distributed on a state-wide basis. The following are some of the major results: students were mostly male, English speaking Caucasions having intelligence quotients below 80; they were generally below level in grade placement and achievement levels in specified subject areas; and their career goals lay in the areas of agriculture, manufacturing, consumer and homemaking education, and construction. The primary handicaps were mental retardation, emotional disturbance, and learning disabilities (neurological in nature). In a vocational technical adult education institution, they would need instruction using all learning modalities in an environment restricted to a small number of students. The study concluded that training in vocational education is needed for handicapped youth and adults. Seven recommendations were made including that vocational education programs be planned and implemented for handicapped students and that higher education institutions offer and vocational teachers and student counselors take courses related to working with the handicapped. The appendix includes a list of instrument validators, participating school districts, an analysis of the reliability of the instrument, a map of the vocational-technical adult education districts in Wisconsin, and a copy of the mailed instrument. A multidisciplinary research team was assembled to review existing computer-aided drafting (CAD) systems for the purpose of enabling staff in the Design Drafting Department at Linn Technical College (Missouri) to select the best system out of the many CAD systems in existence. During the initial stage of the evaluation project, researchers methodically reviewed over 70 books, pamphlets, newsletters, and periodicals concerning CAD hardware and programs. After selecting 54 systems for further study, the researchers developed a 108-item evaluation instrument designed to compare each of the 54 systems according to the specific criteria for CAD performance within Linn Technical College. Based on the results of this comparison, the research team recommended that the Design Drafting Department purchase the Tektronix Plot 2D CAD system.
