1. Ab initio study of Z(N) = 6 magicity

Abstract: The existence of magic numbers of protons and neutrons in nuclei is essential for understanding nuclear structure and fundamental nuclear forces. Over decades, researchers have conducted theoretical and experimental studies on the new magic number Z(N) = 6, focusing on observables such as radii, binding energy, electromagnetic transition, and nucleon separation energies. We perform the ab initio no-core shell model calculations for the occupation numbers of the lowest single particle states in the ground states of Z(N) = 6 and Z(N) = 8 isotopes (isotones). Our calculations do not support Z(N) = 6 as a magic number over a span of atomic numbers. However, 14C and 14O exhibit the characteristics of double-magic nuclei.

Abstract: The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is a detector array comprised by 988 5$\;$cm$\times$5$\;$cm$\times$5$\;$cm TeO$_2$ crystals held below 20 mK, primarily searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay in $^{130}$Te. Unprecedented in size amongst cryogenic calorimetric experiments, CUORE provides a promising setting for the study of exotic through-going particles. Using the first tonne-year of CUORE's exposure, we perform a search for hypothesized fractionally charged particles (FCPs), which are well-motivated by various Standard Model extensions and would have suppressed interactions with matter. No excess of FCP candidate tracks is observed over background, setting leading limits on the underground FCP flux with charges between $e/24-e/5$ at 90\% confidence level. Using the low background environment and segmented geometry of CUORE, we establish the sensitivity of tonne-scale sub-Kelvin detectors to diverse signatures of new physics., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

3. Electric-field-modulated topological phase transition in AlSb/InSe heterobilayers

Abstract: Searching for controllable topological phase by means of external stimuli in two-dimensional (2D) material-based van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures is currently an active field for both the underlying physics and practical applications. Here, using first-principles calculations, we investigate electric-field-modulated topological phase transition in a vdW heterobilayer formed by vertically stacking 2D AlSb and InSe monolayers. The AlSb/InSe heterobilayer studied possesses both dynamical and thermal stabilities, which is a direct bandgap semiconductor and forms a Z-scheme heterojunction. With inclusion of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and applying external electric field, the bandgap decreases at first and then increase, and a trivial insulator to topological insulator phase transition is observed. For the topological insulator phase, band inversion is ascribed to the strong SOC of p orbitals of Sb. Our work paves the way for the design and application of multifunctional nanoscale devices such as topological field effect transistor.

Abstract: We present the model we developed to reconstruct the CUORE radioactive background based on the analysis of an experimental exposure of 1038.4 kg yr. The data reconstruction relies on a simultaneous Bayesian fit applied to energy spectra over a broad energy range. The high granularity of the CUORE detector, together with the large exposure and extended stable operations, allow for an in-depth exploration of both spatial and time dependence of backgrounds. We achieve high sensitivity to both bulk and surface activities of the materials of the setup, detecting levels as low as 10 nBq kg$^{-1}$ and 0.1 nBq cm$^{-2}$, respectively. We compare the contamination levels we extract from the background model with prior radio-assay data, which informs future background risk mitigation strategies. The results of this background model play a crucial role in constructing the background budget for the CUPID experiment as it will exploit the same CUORE infrastructure.

Abstract: The matter-antimatter asymmetry underlines the incompleteness of the current understanding of particle physics. Neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu \beta\beta$) decay may help explain this asymmetry, while unveiling the Majorana nature of the neutrino. The CUORE experiment searches for $0\nu \beta\beta$ decay of $^{130}$Te using a tonne-scale cryogenic calorimeter operated at milli-kelvin temperatures. We report no evidence for $0\nu \beta\beta$ decay and place a lower limit on the half-life of T$_{1/2}$ $>$ 3.8 $\times$ 10$^{25}$ years (90% C.I.) with over 2 tonne$\cdot$year TeO$_2$ exposure. The tools and techniques developed for this result and the 5 year stable operation of nearly 1000 detectors demonstrate the infrastructure for a next-generation experiment capable of searching for $0\nu \beta\beta$ decay across multiple isotopes.

6. Quadrupole dynamics of carbon isotopes and 10Be

Abstract: Electric quadrupole (E2) moments and transitions provide measures of nuclear deformation and related collective structure. However, matrix elements of the E2 operator are sensitive to the nuclear wave function at large distances and are poorly convergent within the ab initio no-core shell model approach. We demonstrate for the first time that the ratio of neutron to proton quadrupole transition matrix elements, Mn/Mp, is well-converged in the ab initio no-core shell model and provides a new and robust tool for comparing with experimental results. We find that our parameter-free results for Mn/Mp for the carbon isotopes and 10Be compare well with experiment, where available, and offer new insight into the quadrupole dynamics of nuclear response.

7. Stability and electronic properties of '4-8'-type ZnSnN$_2$ thin films free of spontaneous polarization for optoelectronic devices

Abstract: Ternary nitride ZnSnN$_2$ is a promising photovoltaic absorber material. In this work, using first-principles calculations, we investigate the stability and electronic properties of "4-8"-type ZnSnN$_2$ thin films. We find that below a certain thickness "4-8"-type thin films have lower total energy than polar films. For 4-layer ZnSnN$_2$ thin film, the Pna2$_1$/Pmc2$_1$ $\rightarrow$ 4-8 transition can spontaneously occur at finite temperatures. All "4-8"-type thin films studied are semiconducting and free of spontaneous polarization, the bandgaps of which can be tuned by the thickness of films, ranging from 1.4 eV to 1.8 eV. Furthermore, these films show light electron effective masses, and octet-rule-preserving disorder has insignificant effects on the electronic properties. Our results provide new insights into the structure of ZnSnN$_2$ in the thin film form and guidance for the experimental investigation.

8. Large spin splitting and piezoelectricity in a two-dimensional topological insulator Al$_2$SbBi with double-layer honeycomb structure

Abstract: Two-dimensional materials provide remarkable platforms to uncover intriguing quantum phenomena and develop nanoscale devices of versatile applications. Recently, AlSb in the double-layer honeycomb (DLHC) structure was successfully synthesized exhibiting a semiconducting nature [ACS Nano 15, 8184 (2021)], which corroborates the preceding theoretical predictions and stimulates the exploration of new robust DLHC materials. In this work, we propose a Janus DLHC monolayer Al$_2$SbBi, the dynamical, thermal, and mechanical stabilities of which are confirmed by first-principles calculations. Monolayer Al$_2$SbBi is found to be a nontrivial topological insulator with a gap of about 0.2 eV, which presents large spin splitting and peculiar spin texture in the valence bands. Furthermore, due to the absence of inversion symmetry, monolayer Al$_2$SbBi exhibits piezoelectricity and the piezoelectric strain coefficients d$_{11}$ and d$_{31}$ are calculated to be 7.97 pm/V and 0.33 pm/V, respectively, which are comparable to and even larger than those of many piezoelectric materials. Our study suggests that monolayer Al$_2$SbBi has potential applications in spintronic and piezoelectric devices.

Abstract: Observing nuclear neutrinoless double beta (0vbb) decay would be a revolutionary result in particle physics. Observing such a decay would prove that the neutrinos are their own antiparticles, help to study the absolute mass of neutrinos, explore the origin of their mass, and may explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry in our universe by lepton number violation. We propose developing a time projection chamber (TPC) using high-pressure 82SeF6 gas and top-metal silicon sensors for read-out in the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of 82Se, called the NvDEx experiment. Besides being located at CJPL with the world's thickest rock shielding, NvDEx combines the advantages of the high Qbb (2.996 MeV) of 82Se and the TPC's ability to distinguish signal and background events using their different topological characteristics. This makes NvDEx unique, with great potential for low-background and high-sensitivity 0vbb searches. NvDEx-100, a NvDEx experiment phase with 100 kg of SeF6 gas, is being built, with plans to complete installation at CJPL by 2025. This report introduces 0vbb physics, the NvDEx concept and its advantages, and the schematic design of NvDEx-100, its subsystems, and background and sensitivity estimation.

10. $0\nu\beta\beta$-decay nuclear matrix elements in self-consistent Skyrme quasiparticle random phase approximation: uncertainty from pairing interaction

Abstract: The uncertainty in the nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) of $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay for $^{76}$Ge, $^{82}$Se, $^{128}$Te, $^{130}$Te, and $^{136}$Xe in the self-consistent quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) method is investigated by using eighteen Skyrme interactions supplemented with either a volume- or surface-type of pairing interactions. The NMEs for the isotopes concerned (except $^{136}$Xe) are less sensitive to the particle-hole ($ph$) interactions, while strongly dependent on the employed isovector particle-particle ($pp$) pairing interactions even though the pairing strengths are optimized to the same pairing gap. The results indicate that a precise determination of the isovector $pp$ pairing interaction in the Skyrme energy density functional is of importance to reduce the uncertainty in the NMEs within the QRPA framework., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

11. Recent Progress in Two-proton Radioactivity

Abstract: During the last few decades, rare isotope beam facilities have provided unique data for studying the properties of nuclides located far from the beta-stability line. Such nuclei are often accompanied by exotic structures and radioactive modes, which represent the forefront of nuclear research. Among them, two-proton (2p) radioactivity is a rare decay mode found in a few highly proton-rich isotopes. The 2p decay lifetimes and properties of emitted protons hold invaluable information regarding the nuclear structures in the presence of a low-lying proton continuum; as such, they have attracted considerable research attention. In this review, we present some of the recent experimental and theoretical progress regarding the 2p decay, including technical innovations for measuring nucleon--nucleon correlations and developments in the models that connect their structural aspects with their decay properties. This impressive progress should play a significant role in elucidating the mechanism of these exotic decays, probing the corresponding components inside nuclei, and providing deep insights into the open quantum nature of dripline systems., Comment: 22 pages, 25 figures

Abstract: The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the most sensitive experiment searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) in $^{130}\text{Te}$. CUORE uses a cryogenic array of 988 TeO$_2$ calorimeters operated at $\sim$10 mK with a total mass of 741 kg. To further increase the sensitivity, the detector response must be well understood. Here, we present a non-linear thermal model for the CUORE experiment on a detector-by-detector basis. We have examined both equilibrium and dynamic electro-thermal models of detectors by numerically fitting non-linear differential equations to the detector data of a subset of CUORE channels which are well characterized and representative of all channels. We demonstrate that the hot-electron effect and electric-field dependence of resistance in NTD-Ge thermistors alone are inadequate to describe our detectors' energy dependent pulse shapes. We introduce an empirical second-order correction factor in the exponential temperature dependence of the thermistor, which produces excellent agreement with energy-dependent pulse shape data up to 6 MeV. We also present a noise analysis using the fitted thermal parameters and show that the intrinsic thermal noise is negligible compared to the observed noise for our detectors., Comment: 34 pages, 14 figures, 6 tables

Abstract: The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso of INFN in Italy is an experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta (0$\nu\beta\beta$) decay. Its main goal is to investigate this decay in $^{130}$Te, but its ton-scale mass and low background make CUORE sensitive to other rare processes as well. In this work, we present our first results on the search for \nbb decay of $^{128}$Te, the Te isotope with the second highest natural isotopic abundance. We find no evidence for this decay, and using a Bayesian analysis we set a lower limit on the $^{128}$Te \nbb decay half-life of T$_{1/2} > 3.6 \times 10^{24}$ yr (90\% CI). This represents the most stringent limit on the half-life of this isotope, improving by over a factor 30 the previous direct search results, and exceeding those from geochemical experiments for the first time.

Abstract: CUORE is a large scale cryogenic experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) in $^{130}$Te. The CUORE detector is made of natural tellurium, providing the possibility of rare event searches on isotopes other than $^{130}$Te. In this work we describe a search for neutrinoless positron emitting electron capture ($0\nu\beta^+EC$) decay in $^{120}$Te with a total TeO$_2$ exposure of 355.7 kg $\cdot$ yr, corresponding to 0.2405 kg $\cdot$ yr of $^{120}$Te. Albeit $0 \nu \beta\beta$ with two final state electrons represents the most promising channel, the emission of a positron and two 511-keV $\gamma$s make $0\nu\beta^+EC$ decay signature extremely clear. To fully exploit the potential offered by the detector modularity we include events with different topology and perform a simultaneous fit of five selected signal signatures. Using blinded data we extract a median exclusion sensitivity of $3.4 \cdot 10^{22}$ yr at 90% Credibility Interval (C.I.). After unblinding we find no evidence of $0\nu\beta^+EC$ signal and set a 90% C.I. Bayesian lower limit of $2.9 \cdot 10^{22}$ yr on $^{120}$Te half-life. This result improves by an order of magnitude the existing limit from the combined analysis of CUORE-0 and Cuoricino.

Abstract: The Nuclotron-base Ion Collider fAcility (NICA) is under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), with commissioning of the facility expected in late 2022. The Multi-Purpose Detector (MPD) has been designed to operate at NICA and its components are currently in production. The detector is expected to be ready for data taking with the first beams from NICA. This document provides an overview of the landscape of the investigation of the QCD phase diagram in the region of maximum baryonic density, where NICA and MPD will be able to provide significant and unique input. It also provides a detailed description of the MPD set-up, including its various subsystems as well as its support and computing infrastructures. 16. Effects of neutron-skin thickness on direct hard photon emission from reactions induced by the neutron-rich projectile $^{50}$Ca

Abstract: Direct hard photon emissions from incoherent proton-neutron bremsstrahlung in collisions of the neutron-rich projectile $^{50}$Ca with $^{12}$C and $^{40}$Ca targets are simulated in the framework of the isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IQMD) model. By adjusting the diffuseness parameter of neutron density in the droplet model to obtain different neutron skin thicknesses for $^{50}$Ca, the effects of neutron skin thickness on direct hard photon emission are investigated via several probes. The results show that more direct hard photons are produced with increasing neutron skin thickness in peripheral collisions. Meanwhile, we find that the multiplicity yield ratio $R_{cp}(\sigma_{\gamma})$ between central collisions and peripheral collisions as well as the rapidity dependence of multiplicity for direct hard photons are sensitive to neutron skin thickness. The results indicate that direct hard photon emission can be taken as an experimental observable to extract information on neutron skin thickness., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

17. Single-state or low-lying-states dominance mechanism of $2\nu\beta\beta$-decay nuclear matrix elements

Abstract: The $2\nu\beta\beta$-decay nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) for 11 nuclei are studied with the self-consistent quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) based on Skyrme Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (Skyrme HFB) model. As a common feature pointed out in https://journals.aps.org/prc/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevC.98.064325 Phys. Rev. C 98, 064325 (2018), negative contributions in the running sums of NMEs are found, and play important roles in the fulfillment of the single-state dominance or low-lying-states dominance hypothesis. By comparing the results of QRPA model and quasiparticle Tamm-Dancoff approximation (QTDA) model, we find that the negative contributions are due to the enhanced ground-state correlations, which are brought by the backward amplitude in QRPA model and tuned by strong isoscalar pairing interaction. The enhancement of ground-state correlations will change the signs of GT$^{+}$ transition amplitudes of higher-lying states and leads to the negative contributions in the running sum., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: The past few decades have seen major developments in the design and operation of cryogenic particle detectors. This technology offers an extremely good energy resolution - comparable to semiconductor detectors - and a wide choice of target materials, making low temperature calorimetric detectors ideal for a variety of particle physics applications. Rare event searches have continued to require ever greater exposures, which has driven them to ever larger cryogenic detectors, with the CUORE experiment being the first to reach a tonne-scale, mK-cooled, experimental mass. CUORE, designed to search for neutrinoless double beta decay, has been operational since 2017 at a temperature of about 10 mK. This result has been attained by the use of an unprecedentedly large cryogenic infrastructure called the CUORE cryostat: conceived, designed and commissioned for this purpose. In this article the main characteristics and features of the cryogenic facility developed for the CUORE experiment are highlighted. A brief introduction of the evolution of the field and of the past cryogenic facilities are given. The motivation behind the design and development of the CUORE cryogenic facility is detailed as are the steps taken toward realization, commissioning, and operation of the CUORE cryostat. The major challenges overcome by the collaboration and the solutions implemented throughout the building of the cryogenic facility will be discussed along with the potential improvements for future facilities. The success of CUORE has opened the door to a new generation of large-scale cryogenic facilities in numerous fields of science. Broader implications of the incredible feat achieved by the CUORE collaboration on the future cryogenic facilities in various fields ranging from neutrino and dark matter experiments to quantum computing will be examined., Comment: 45 pages, 14 figures

Abstract: The possibility that neutrinos may be their own antiparticles, unique among the known fundamental particles, arises from the symmetric theory of fermions proposed by Ettore Majorana in 1937. Given the profound consequences of such Majorana neutrinos, among which is a potential explanation for the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe via leptogenesis, the Majorana nature of neutrinos commands intense experimental scrutiny globally; one of the primary experimental probes is neutrinoless double beta ($0 \nu \beta \beta$) decay. Here we show results from the search for $0 \nu \beta \beta$ decay of $^{130}$Te, using the latest advanced cryogenic calorimeters with the CUORE experiment. CUORE, operating just 10 millikelvin above absolute zero, has pushed the state of the art on three frontiers: the sheer mass held at such ultra-low temperatures, operational longevity, and the low levels of ionising radiation emanating from the cryogenic infrastructure. We find no evidence for $0 \nu \beta \beta$ decay and set a lower bound of $T_{1/2}^{0 \nu} > 2.2 \times 10^{25}$ years at a 90% credibility interval. We discuss potential applications of the advances made with CUORE to other fields such as direct dark matter, neutrino and nuclear physics searches and large-scale quantum computing, which can benefit from sustained operation of large payloads in a low-radioactivity, ultra-low temperature cryogenic environment.

Abstract: The CUORE experiment is a large bolometric array searching for the lepton number violating neutrino-less double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) in the isotope $\mathrm{^{130}Te}$. In this work we present the latest results on two searches for the double beta decay (DBD) of $\mathrm{^{130}Te}$ to the first $0^{+}_2$ excited state of $\mathrm{^{130}Xe}$: the $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay and the Standard Model-allowed two-neutrinos double beta decay ($2\nu\beta\beta$). Both searches are based on a 372.5 kg$\times$yr TeO$_2$ exposure. The de-excitation gamma rays emitted by the excited Xe nucleus in the final state yield a unique signature, which can be searched for with low background by studying coincident events in two or more bolometers. The closely packed arrangement of the CUORE crystals constitutes a significant advantage in this regard. The median limit setting sensitivities at 90\% Credible Interval (C.I.) of the given searches were estimated as $\mathrm{S^{0\nu}_{1/2} = 5.6 \times 10^{24} \: \mathrm{yr}}$ for the ${0\nu\beta\beta}$ decay and $\mathrm{S^{2\nu}_{1/2} = 2.1 \times 10^{24} \: \mathrm{yr}}$ for the ${2\nu\beta\beta}$ decay. No significant evidence for either of the decay modes was observed and a Bayesian lower bound at $90\%$ C.I. on the decay half lives is obtained as: $\mathrm{(T_{1/2})^{0\nu}_{0^+_2} > 5.9 \times 10^{24} \: \mathrm{yr}}$ for the $0\nu\beta\beta$ mode and $\mathrm{(T_{1/2})^{2\nu}_{0^+_2} > 1.3 \times 10^{24} \: \mathrm{yr}}$ for the $2\nu\beta\beta$ mode. Abstract: We measured two-neutrino double beta decay of $^{130}$Te using an exposure of 300.7 kg$\cdot$yr accumulated with the CUORE detector. Using a Bayesian analysis to fit simulated spectra to experimental data, it was possible to disentangle all the major background sources and precisely measure the two-neutrino contribution. The half-life is in agreement with past measurements with a strongly reduced uncertainty: $T^{2\nu}_{1/2} = 7.71^{+0.08}_{-0.06}\mathrm{(stat.)}^{+0.12}_{-0.15}\mathrm{(syst.)}\times10^{20}$ yr. Abstract: The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first cryogenic experiment searching for neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay that has been able to reach the one-ton scale. The detector, located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, consists of an array of 988 TeO$_2$ crystals arranged in a compact cylindrical structure of 19 towers. Following the completion of the detector construction in August 2016, CUORE began its first physics data run in 2017 at a base temperature of about 10 mK. Following multiple optimization campaigns in 2018, CUORE is currently in stable operating mode. In 2019, CUORE released its 2\textsuperscript{nd} result of the search for $0\nu\beta\beta$ with a TeO$_2$ exposure of 372.5 kg$\cdot$yr and a median exclusion sensitivity to a $^{130}$Te $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay half-life of $1.7\cdot 10^{25}$ yr. We find no evidence for $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay and set a 90\% C.I. (credibility interval) Bayesian lower limit of $3.2\cdot 10^{25}$ yr on the $^{130}$Te $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay half-life. In this work, we present the current status of CUORE's search for $0\nu\beta\beta$, as well as review the detector performance. 23. Azimuthal anisotropy and multiplicities of hard photons and free nucleons in intermediate-energy heavy-ion collisions

Abstract: Anisotropic flow can offer significant information of evolution dynamics in heavy-ion collisions. A systematic study of the directed flow $v_1$ and elliptic flow $v_2$ of hard photons and free nucleons is performed for $^{40}$Ca+$^{40}$Ca collisions in a framework of isospin dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IQMD) model. The study firstly reveals that thermal photons emitted in intermediate-energy heavy-ion collisions have the behaviors of directed and elliptic flows. The interesting phenomena of incident energy dependence of $v_1$ and $v_2$ for thermal photons in central collisions also confirmed that it can be regarded as a good probe of evolution dynamics. Moreover, the multiplicities of hard photons and free nucleons and their correlation are also investigated. 24. Direct photon emission and influence of dynamical wave packets in an extended quantum molecular dynamics model

Abstract: Direct photon produced from first proton-neutron ($p$-$n$) collision during the early stage of heavy ion reaction is a sensitive probe to reflect energy and momentum distribution of nucleons. In this work, we embedded the hard photon production channel in an extended quantum molecular dynamics (EQMD) model, and took the direct photon as a possible probe to improve namely the Fermi motion in the EQMD model. A possible scheme is offered to handle the dynamical wave packet width within incoherent bremsstrahlung process. Direct photons calculated by our modified EQMD were compared with data of $^{14}$N + $^{12}$C at beam energies $E/A$ = 20, 30 and 40 MeV, and it is found that the yield, inverse slope and angular distribution of direct photons could be reasonably reproduced. In addition, asymmetric reaction systems of $^{4}$He + C and $^{4}$He + Zn at $E/A$ = 53 MeV are also simulated in this work. It is found that the symmetric angular distribution in the nucleon-nucleon ($N$-$N$) center-of-mass (c.m.) frame and the velocity of $ the \gamma$-emission source can be reasonably obtained from our method although there is some quantitative differences., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: We used a high-resolution magnetic spectrograph to study neutron pair-correlated $0^+$ states in $^{136}$Ba, produced via the $^{138}{\rm Ba}(p,t)$ reaction. In conjunction with state-of-the-art shell model calculations, these data benchmark part of the dominant Gamow-Teller component of the nuclear matrix element (NME) for $^{136}$Xe neutrinoless double beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay. We demonstrate for the first time an evaluation of part of a $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay NME by use of an experimental observable, presenting a new avenue of approach for more accurate calculations of $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay matrix elements.

We observe a background of $(1.38\pm0.07)\cdot10^{-2}$ counts$/($keV$\cdot$kg$\cdot$yr$)$ in the $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay region of interest and, with a total exposure of 372.5 kg$\cdot$yr, we attain a median exclusion sensitivity of $1.7\cdot10^{25}$ yr. We find no evidence for $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay and set a $90\%$ CI Bayesian lower limit of $3.2\cdot10^{25}$ yr on the $^{130}$Te half-life for this process. Abstract: The neutron yield in $^{12}$C(d,n)$^{13}$N and the proton yield in $^{12}C(d,p)^{13}$C have been measured by deuteron beam from 0.6 MeV to 3 MeV which is delivered from a 4-MeV electro static accelerator bombarding on the thick carbon target. The neutrons are detected at $0\degree$, $24\degree$, $48\degree$ and the protons at $135\degree$ in the lab frame. The ratios of the neutron yield to the proton one have been calculated and can be used as an effective probe to pin down the resonances. The resonances are found at 1.4 MeV, 1.7 MeV, 2.5 MeV in $^{12}C(d,p)^{13}$C and at 1.6 MeV, 2.7 MeV in $^{12}$C(d,n)$^{13}$N. Abstract: Based on the isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics model, finite-size scaling effects on nuclear liquid--gas phase transition probes are investigated by studying the de-excitation processes of six thermal sources of different sizes with the same initial density and similar $N/Z$. Using several probes including the total multiplicity derivative ($dM_{tot}/dT$), second moment parameter ($M_2$), intermediate mass fragment (IMF) multiplicity ($N_{IMF}$), Fisher's power-law exponent ($\tau$), and Ma's nuclear Zipf's law exponent ($\xi$), the relationship between the phase transition temperature and the source size has been established. It is observed that the phase transition temperatures obtained from the IMF multiplicity, Fisher's exponent, and Ma's nuclear Zipf's law exponent have a strong correlation with the source size. Moreover, by employing the finite-size scaling law, the critical temperature $T_c$ and the critical exponent $\nu$ have been obtained for infinite nuclear matter., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy, is the world's largest bolometric experiment. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO2 crystals, for a total mass of 742 kg. CUORE is presently in data taking, searching for the neutrinoless double beta decay of 130 Te. CUORE is operational since the spring of 2017. The initial science run already allowed to provide the most stringent limit on the neutrinoless double beta decay half-life of 130Te, and to perform the most precise measurement of the two-neutrino double beta decay half-life. Up to date, we have more than doubled the collected exposure. Abstract: We report on a search for double beta decay of $^{130}$Te to the first $0^{+}$ excited state of $^{130}$Xe using a 9.8 kg$\cdot$yr exposure of $^{130}$Te collected with the CUORE-0 experiment. In this work we exploit different topologies of coincident events to search for both the neutrinoless and two-neutrino double-decay modes. We find no evidence for either mode and place lower bounds on the half-lives: $\tau^{0\nu}_{0^+}>7.9\cdot 10^{23}$ yr and $\tau^{2\nu}_{0^+}>2.4\cdot 10^{23}$ yr. Combining our results with those obtained by the CUORICINO experiment, we achieve the most stringent constraints available for these processes: $\tau^{0\nu}_{0^+}>1.4\cdot 10^{24}$ yr and $\tau^{2\nu}_{0^+}>2.5\cdot 10^{23}$ yr., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables

Abstract: CUORE is a 741 kg array of 988 TeO$_2$ bolometeric crystals designed to search for the neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{130}$Te and other rare processes. CUORE has been taking data since summer 2017, and as of summer 2018 collected a total of 86.3 kg$\cdot$yr of TeO$_2$ exposure. Based on this exposure, we were able to set a limit on the $0\nu\beta\beta$ half-life of $^{130}$Te of $T^{0\nu}_{1/2}>1.5\times10^{25}$ yr at 90% C.L. At this conference, we showed the decomposition of the CUORE background and were able to extract a $^{130}$Te $2\nu\beta\beta$ half-life of $T_{1/2}^{2\nu}=[7.9\pm0.1 \mathrm{(stat.)}\pm0.2 \mathrm{(syst.)}]\times10^{20}$ yr. 32. Searching for states analogous to the 12C Hoyle state in heavier nuclei using the thick target inverse kinematics technique

Abstract: Identification of alpha cluster states analogous to the 12C Hoyle state in heavier alpha- conjugate nuclei can provide tests of the existence of alpha condensates in nuclei. Such states are predicted for 16O, 20Ne, 24Mg, 28Si etc. at excitation energies slightly above the multi-alpha particle decay threshold, but have not yet been experimentally identified. The Thick Target Inverse Kinematics (TTIK) technique can be used to study the breakup of excited self-conjugate nuclei into many alpha particles. The reaction 20Ne+{\alpha} was studied using a 20Ne beam at 12 MeV/nucleon from the K150 cyclotron at Texas A&M University. The TTIK method was used to study both single {\alpha}-particle emission and multiple {\alpha}-particle decays. Events with alpha multiplicity up to four were analyzed. The analysis of the three {\alpha} - particle emission data allowed the identification of the Hoyle state and other 12C excited states decaying into three alpha particles. The results are shown and compared with other data available in the literature. Although the statistics for events with alpha multiplicity four is low, the data show a structure at about 15.2 MeV that could indicate the existence in 16O of a state analogous to the 12C Hoyle state. This structure is confirmed by the re-analysis of alpha multiplicity four events from a previous experiment performed at 9.7 MeV/nucleon with a similar setup but lower granularity. Moreover, the reconstructed excitation energy of 24Mg for these events peaks at around 34 MeV, very close to the predicted excitation energy for an excited state analogous to the 12C Hoyle state in 24Mg., Comment: 22 pages, 16 figures

33. Evidence for negative thermal expansion in the superconducting precursor phase SmFeAsO

Abstract: The fluorine-doped rare-earth iron oxypnictide series SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ (0 $\leq x \leq$ 0.10) was investigated with high resolution powder x-ray scattering. In agreement with previous studies, the parent compound SmFeAsO exhibits a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural distortion at T$\rm{_{S}}$~=~130~K which is rapidly suppressed by $x \simeq$ 0.10 deep within the superconducting dome. The change in unit cell symmetry is followed by a previously unreported magnetoelastic distortion at 120~K. The temperature dependence of the thermal expansion coefficient $\alpha_{V}$ reveals a rich phase diagram for SmFeAsO: (i) a global minimum at 125 K corresponds to the opening of a spin-density wave instability as measured by pump-probe femtosecond spectroscopy whilst (ii) a global maximum at 110 K corresponds to magnetic ordering of the Sm and Fe sublattices as measured by magnetic x-ray scattering. At much lower temperatures than T$\rm{_{N}}$, SmFeAsO exhibits a significant negative thermal expansion on the order of -40~ppm~$\cdot$~K$^{-1}$ in contrast to the behavior of other rare-earth oxypnictides such as PrFeAsO and the actinide oxypnictide NpFeAsO where the onset of $\alpha <$ 0 only appears in the vicinity of magnetic ordering. Correlating this feature with the temperature and doping dependence of the resistivity and the unit cell parameters, we interpret the negative thermal expansion as being indicative of the possible condensation of itinerant electrons accompanying the opening of a SDW gap, consistent with transport measurements., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: TeO2 bolometers have been used for many years to search for neutrinoless double beta decay in 130-Te. CUORE, a tonne-scale TeO2 detector array, recently published the most sensitive limit on the half-life, $T_{1/2}^{0\nu} > 1.5 \times 10^{25}\,$yr, which corresponds to an upper bound of $140-400$~meV on the effective Majorana mass of the neutrino. While it makes CUORE a world-leading experiment looking for neutrinoless double beta decay, it is not the only study that CUORE will contribute to in the field of nuclear and particle physics. As already done over the years with many small-scale experiments, CUORE will investigate both rare decays (such as the two-neutrino double beta decay of 130-Te and the hypothesized electron capture in 123-Te), and rare processes (e.g., dark matter and axion interactions). Abstract: The CUORE experiment, a ton-scale cryogenic bolometer array, recently began operation at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. The array represents a significant advancement in this technology, and in this work we apply it for the first time to a high-sensitivity search for a lepton-number--violating process: $^{130}$Te neutrinoless double-beta decay. Examining a total TeO$_2$ exposure of 86.3 kg$\cdot$yr, characterized by an effective energy resolution of (7.7 $\pm$ 0.5) keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of (0.014 $\pm$ 0.002) counts/(keV$\cdot$kg$\cdot$yr), we find no evidence for neutrinoless double-beta decay. The median statistical sensitivity of this search is $7.0\times10^{24}$ yr. Including systematic uncertainties, we place a lower limit on the decay half-life of $T^{0\nu}_{1/2}$($^{130}$Te) > $1.3\times 10^{25}$ yr (90% C.L.). Combining this result with those of two earlier experiments, Cuoricino and CUORE-0, we find $T^{0\nu}_{1/2}$($^{130}$Te) > $1.5\times 10^{25}$ yr (90% C.L.), which is the most stringent limit to date on this decay. Interpreting this result as a limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass, we find $m_{\beta\beta}<(110 - 520)$ meV, where the range reflects the nuclear matrix element estimates employed., Comment: Published in PRL, reference and DOI added

Abstract: We have performed a search for neutrinoless $\beta^{+}\hspace{-0.2em}EC$ decay of $^{120}$Te using the final CUORE-0 data release. We describe a new analysis method for the simultaneous fit of signatures with different event topology, and of data subsets with different signal efficiency, obtaining a limit on the half-life of the decay of $T_{1/2}>1.6\cdot10^{21}$ yr at $90\%$ CI. Combining this with results from Cuoricino, a predecessor experiment, we obtain the strongest limit to date, corresponding to $T_{1/2}>2.7\cdot10^{21}$ yr at $90\%$ CI., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables

Abstract: CUORE is a tonne-scale cryogenic detector operating at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) that uses tellurium dioxide bolometers to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{130}$Te. CUORE is also suitable to search for low energy rare events such as solar axions or WIMP scattering, thanks to its ultra-low background and large target mass. However, to conduct such sensitive searches requires improving the energy threshold to 10 keV. In this paper, we describe the analysis techniques developed for the low energy analysis of CUORE-like detectors, using the data acquired from November 2013 to March 2015 by CUORE-0, a single-tower prototype designed to validate the assembly procedure and new cleaning techniques of CUORE. We explain the energy threshold optimization, continuous monitoring of the trigger efficiency, data and event selection, and energy calibration at low energies in detail. We also present the low energy background spectrum of CUORE-0 below 60keV. Finally, we report the sensitivity of CUORE to WIMP annual modulation using the CUORE-0 energy threshold and background, as well as an estimate of the uncertainty on the nuclear quenching factor from nuclear recoils in CUORE-0., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: We report a study of the CUORE sensitivity to neutrinoless double beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay. We used a Bayesian analysis based on a toy Monte Carlo (MC) approach to extract the exclusion sensitivity to the $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay half-life ($T_{1/2}^{0\nu}$) at $90\%$ credibility interval (CI) -- i.e. the interval containing the true value of $T_{1/2}^{0\nu}$ with $90\%$ probability -- and the $3 \sigma$ discovery sensitivity. We consider various background levels and energy resolutions, and describe the influence of the data division in subsets with different background levels. If the background level and the energy resolution meet the expectation, CUORE will reach a $90\%$ CI exclusion sensitivity of $2\cdot10^{25}$ yr with $3$ months, and $9\cdot10^{25}$ yr with $5$ years of live time. Under the same conditions, the discovery sensitivity after $3$ months and $5$ years will be $7\cdot10^{24}$ yr and $4\cdot10^{25}$ yr, respectively., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 4 tables

Abstract: The ratio of shear viscosity over entropy density in low energy heavy-ion collision has been calculated by using the Green-Kubo method in the framework of an extended quantum molecular dynamics model. After the system almost reaching a local equilibration for a head-on $^{40}$Ca+$^{100}$Mo collision, thermodynamic and transport properties are extracted. Meanwhile, iso-vector giant dipole resonance (IVGDR) of the collision system is also studied. By the Gaussian fits to the IVGDR photon spectra, the peak energies of IVGDR are extracted at different incident energies. The result shows that the IVGDR peak energy has a positive correlation with the ratio of shear viscosity over entropy density. Abstract: The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is designed to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te with an array of 988 TeO2 bolometers operating at temperatures around 10 mK. The experiment is currently being commissioned in Hall A of Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy. The goal of CUORE is to reach a 90\% C.L. exclusion sensitivity on the \tect decay half-life of 9$\times$10$^{25}$ years after 5\,years of data taking. The main issue to be addressed to accomplish this aim is the rate of background events in the region of interest, which must not be higher than 10$^{-2}$\,counts/keV/kg/y. We developed a detailed Monte Carlo simulation, based on results from a campaign of material screening, radioassays, and bolometric measurements, to evaluate the expected background. This was used over the years to guide the construction strategies of the experiment and we use it here to project a background model for CUORE. Abstract: Fragmentation cross section of $^{28}$Si + $^{9}$Be reaction at 75.8 MeV/u was analyzed for studying the decay mode of single-proton emission in $^{21}$Al (the proton-rich nucleus with neutron closed-shell of $N = 8$ and $T_z = -5/2$). With the comparison between the measured fragmentation cross section and the theoretical cross section produced by EPAX3.1a for the observed nuclei (i.e. $^{20}$Mg, $^{21}$Al and $^{22}$Si), the expected yield for a particle stable $^{21}$Al was estimated. With the exponential decay law, an upper limit of half-life of $13$ ns was determined. Using the single-proton penetration model, the upper limit of single-proton separation energy of $-105$ keV was deduced. This deduced mass limit agrees with the microscopic calculation based on nucleon-nucleon (NN) + three-nucleon (3N) forces in $sdf_{7/2}p_{3/2}$ valence space, which indicates the importance of 3N forces in $^{21}$Al., Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures

Abstract: The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is a 1-ton scale bolometric experiment devoted to the search of the neutrinoless double-beta decay (0{\nu}\b{eta}\b{eta}) in 130Te. The CUORE detector consists of an array of 988 TeO2 crystals operated at 10 mK. CUORE-0 is the CUORE demonstrator: it has been built to test the performance of the upcoming CUORE experiment and represents the largest 130Te bolometric setup ever operated. CUORE-0 has been running at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Italy) from 2013 to 2015. The final CUORE-0 analysis on 0{\nu}\b{eta}\b{eta} and the corresponding detector performance are presented. Abstract: The decay of the proton-rich nucleus $^{22}$Si was studied by a silicon array coupled with germanium clover detectors. Nine charged-particle groups are observed and most of them are recognized as $\beta$-delayed proton emission. A charged-particle group at 5600 keV is identified experimentally as $\beta$-delayed two-proton emission from the isobaric analog state of $^{22}$Al. Another charged-particle emission without any $\beta$ particle at the low energy less than 300 keV is observed. The half-life of $^{22}$Si is determined as 27.5 (18) ms. The experimental results of $\beta$-decay of $^{22}$Si are compared and in nice agreement with shell-model calculations. The mass excess of the ground state of $^{22}$Si deduced from the experimental data shows that three-nucleon (3N) forces with repulsive contributions have significant effects on nuclei near the proton drip line., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: The proton-proton momentum correlation functions ($C_{pp}(q)$) for kinematically complete decay channels of $^{23}$Al $\rightarrow$ p + p + $^{21}$Na and $^{22}$Mg $\rightarrow$ p + p + $^{20}$Ne have been measured at the RIKEN RI Beam Factory. From the very different correlation strength of $C_{pp}(q)$ for $^{23}$Al and $^{22}$Mg, the source size and emission time information were extracted from the $C_{pp}(q)$ data by assuming a Gaussian source profile in the correlation function calculation code (CRAB). The results indicated that the mechanism of two-proton emission from $^{23}$Al was mainly sequential emission, while that of $^{22}$Mg was mainly three-body simultaneous emission. Abstract: The $\beta$ decay of the drip-line nucleus $^{20}$Mg gives important information on resonances in $^{20}$Na, which are relevant for the astrophysical $rp$-process. A detailed $\beta$ decay spectroscopic study of $^{20}$Mg was performed by a continuous-implantation method. A detection system was specially developed for charged-particle decay studies, giving improved spectroscopic information including the half-life of $^{20}$Mg, the excitation energies, the branching ratios, and the log $ft$ values for the states in $^{20}$Na populated in the $\beta$ decay of $^{20}$Mg. A new proton branch was observed and the corresponding excited state in $^{20}$Na was proposed. The large isospin asymmetry for the mirror decays of $^{20}$Mg and $^{20}$O was reproduced, as well. However, no conclusive conclusion can be draw about the astrophysically interesting 2645~keV resonance in $^{20}$Na due to the limited statistics.

46. Measurement of the Two-Neutrino Double Beta Decay Half-life of $^{130}$Te with the CUORE-0 Experiment

Abstract: We report on the measurement of the two-neutrino double beta decay half-life of $^{130}$Te with the CUORE-0 detector. From an exposure of 33.4 kg$\cdot$y of TeO$_2$, the half-life is determined to be $T_{1/2}^{2\nu}$ = [8.2 $\pm$ 0.2 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.6 (syst.)] $\times$ 10$^{20}$y. Abstract: The CUORE experiment will search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{130}$Te with an array of 988 TeO$_2$ bolometers arranged in 19 towers. CUORE-0, the first tower assembled according to the CUORE procedures, was built and commissioned at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, and took data from March 2013 to March 2015. In this paper we describe the design, construction and operation of the CUORE-0 experiment, with an emphasis on the improvements made over a predecessor experiment, Cuoricino. Abstract: We describe in detail the methods used to obtain the lower bound on the lifetime of neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay in $^{130}$Te and the associated limit on the effective Majorana mass of the neutrino using the CUORE-0 detector. CUORE-0 is a bolometric detector array located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso that was designed to validate the background reduction techniques developed for CUORE, a next-generation experiment scheduled to come online in 2016. CUORE-0 is also a competitive $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay search in its own right and functions as a platform to further develop the analysis tools and procedures to be used in CUORE. These include data collection, event selection and processing, as well as an evaluation of signal efficiency. In particular, we describe the amplitude evaluation, thermal gain stabilization, energy calibration methods, and the analysis event selection used to create our final $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay search spectrum. We define our high level analysis procedures, with emphasis on the new insights gained and challenges encountered. We outline in detail our fitting methods near the hypothesized $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay peak and catalog the main sources of systematic uncertainty. Finally, we derive the $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay half-life limits previously reported for CUORE-0, $T^{0\nu}_{1/2}>2.7\times10^{24}$ yr, and in combination with the Cuoricino limit, $T^{0\nu}_{1/2}>4.0\times10^{24}$ yr., Comment: 18 pages, 18 figures. Abstract: We have performed for the first time a comprehensive study of the sensitivity of $r$-process nucleosynthesis to individual nuclear masses across the chart of nuclides. Using the latest version (2012) of the Finite-Range Droplet Model, we consider mass variations of $\pm0.5$ MeV and propagate each mass change to all affected quantities, including $Q$-values, reaction rates, and branching ratios. We find such mass variations can result in up to an order of magnitude local change in the final abundance pattern produced in an $r$-process simulation. We identify key nuclei whose masses have a substantial impact on abundance predictions for hot, cold, and neutron star merger $r$-process scenarios and could be measured at future radioactive beam facilities., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, submitted

Abstract: We report the results of a search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in a 9.8~kg$\cdot$yr exposure of $^{130}$Te using a bolometric detector array, CUORE-0. The characteristic detector energy resolution and background level in the region of interest are $5.1\pm 0.3{\rm~keV}$ FWHM and $0.058 \pm 0.004\,(\mathrm{stat.})\pm 0.002\,(\mathrm{syst.})$~counts/(keV$\cdot$kg$\cdot$yr), respectively. The median 90%~C.L. lower-limit sensitivity of the experiment is $2.9\times 10^{24}~{\rm yr}$ and surpasses the sensitivity of previous searches. We find no evidence for neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{130}$Te and place a Bayesian lower bound on the decay half-life, $T^{0\nu}_{1/2}>$~$ 2.7\times 10^{24}~{\rm yr}$ at 90%~C.L. Combining CUORE-0 data with the 19.75~kg$\cdot$yr exposure of $^{130}$Te from the Cuoricino experiment we obtain $T^{0\nu}_{1/2} > 4.0\times 10^{24}~\mathrm{yr}$ at 90%~C.L.~(Bayesian), the most stringent limit to date on this half-life. Using a range of nuclear matrix element estimates we interpret this as a limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass, $m_{\beta\beta}< 270$ -- $760~\mathrm{meV}$., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, updated version as published in PRL
