Determining the creep compliances of orthotropic composite materials requires experiments in at least three different uniaxial and biaxial loading directions. Up to date, data respecting multiple climates and all anatomical directions are sparse for hygro-responsive materials like Norway spruce. Consequently, simulation models of wood frequently over-simplify creep, e.g., by proportionally scaling missing components or neglecting climatic influences. To overcome such simplifications, an automated computer-controlled climatized creep rack was developed, that experimentally assesses moisture-dependent viscoelasticity and mechanosorption in all anatomical directions. The device simultaneously measures the creep strains of three dogbone tension samples, three flat compression samples, and six Arcan shear samples via Digital Image Correlation. This allows for ascertaining the complete orthotropic compliance tensors while accounting for loading direction asymmetries. This paper explains the creep rack's structure and demonstrates its use by determining all nine independent creep compliance components of Norway spruce at 65% relative humidity. The data shows that loading asymmetry effects amount up to 16%. Furthermore, the found creep compliance tensor is not proportional to the elastic compliance tensor. Dense plasma environment affects the electronic structure of ions via variations of the microscopic electrical fields, also known as plasma screening. This effect can be either estimated by simplified analytical models, or by computationally expensive and to date unverified numerical calculations. We have experimentally quantified plasma screening from the energy shifts of the bound-bound transitions in matter driven by the x-ray free electron laser (XFEL). This was enabled by identification of detailed electronic configurations of the observed K{\alpha}, K\b{eta} and K{\gamma} lines. This work paves the way for improving plasma screening models including connected effects like ionization potential depression and continuum lowering, which will advance the understanding of atomic physics in Warm Dense Matter regime.

Laser-driven compact particle accelerators can provide ultrashort pulses of broadband X-rays, well suited for undertaking X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements on a femtosecond timescale. Here the Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) features of the K-edge of a copper sample have been observed over a 250 eV window in a single shot using a laser wakefield accelerator, providing information on both the electronic and ionic structure simultaneously. This unique capability will allow the investigation of ultrafast processes, and in particular, probing high-energy-density matter and physics far-from-equilibrium where the sample refresh rate is slow and shot number is limited. For example, states that replicate the tremendous pressures and temperatures of planetary bodies or the conditions inside nuclear fusion reactions. Using high-power lasers to pump these samples also has the advantage of being inherently synchronised to the laser-driven X-ray probe. A perspective on the additional strengths of a laboratory-based ultrafast X-ray absorption source is presented.

The failure of heterogeneous materials with microstructures is a complex process of damage nucleation, growth and localisation. This process spans multiple length scales and is challenging to simulate numerically due to its high computational cost. One option is to use domain decomposed multi-scale methods with dynamical refinement. If needed, these methods refine coarse regions into a fine-scale representation to explicitly model the damage in the microstructure. However, damage evolution is commonly restricted to fine-scale regions only. Thus, they are unable to capture the full complexity and breath of the degradation process in the material. In this contribution, a generic procedure that allows to account for damage in all representations is proposed. The approach combines a specially designed orthotropic damage law, with a scheme to generate pre-damaged fine-scale microstructures. Results indicate that the damage approximation for the coarse representation works well. Furthermore, the generated fine-scale damage patterns are overall consistent with explicitly simulated damage patterns. Minor discrepancies occur in the generation but subsequently vanish when explicit damage evolution continuous; for instance under increased load. The presented approach provides a methodological basis for adaptive multi-scale simulation schemes with consistent damage evolution.

We report on experimental measurements of energy transfer efficiencies in a GeV-class laser wakefield accelerator. Both the transfer of energy from the laser to the plasma wakefield, and from the plasma to the accelerated electron beam were diagnosed by simultaneous measurement of the deceleration of laser photons and the acceleration of electrons as a function of plasma length. The extraction efficiency, which we define as the ratio of the energy gained by the electron beam to the energy lost by the self-guided laser mode, was maximised at $19\pm3$\% by tuning of the plasma density and length. The additional information provided by the octave-spanning laser spectrum measurement allows for independent optimisation of the plasma efficiency terms, which is required for the key goal of improving the overall efficiency of laser wakefield accelerators., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures plus supplementary materials

Single-shot absorption measurements have been performed using the multi-keV X-rays generated by a laser wakefield accelerator. A 200 TW laser was used to drive a laser wakefield accelerator in a mode which produced broadband electron beams with a maximum energy above 1 GeV and a broad divergence of $\approx15$ miliradians FWHM. Betatron oscillations of these electrons generated $1.2\pm0.2\times10^6$ photons/eV in the 5 keV region, with a signal-to-noise ratio of approximately 300:1. This was sufficient to allow high-resolution XANES measurements at the K-edge of a titanium sample in a single shot. We demonstrate that this source is capable of single-shot, simultaneous measurements of both the electron and ion distributions in matter heated to eV temperatures by comparison with DFT simulations. The unique combination of a high-flux, large bandwidth, few femtosecond duration X-ray pulse synchronised to a high-power laser will enable key advances in the study of ultra-fast energetic processes such as electron-ion equilibration., Comment: 6 pages and 4 figures in main text, 3 pages and 4 figures in supplementary material

We report on the buckling and subsequent collapse of orthotropic elastic spherical shells under volume and pressure control. Going far beyond what is known for isotropic shells, a rich morphological phase space with three distinct regimes emerges upon variation of shell slenderness and degree of orthotropy. Our extensive numerical simulations are in agreement with experiments using fabricated polymer shells. The shell buckling pathways and corresponding strain energy evolution are shown to depend strongly on material orthotropy. We find surprisingly robust orthotropic structures with strong similarities to stomatocytes and tricolpate pollen grains, suggesting that the shape of several of Nature's collapsed shells could be understood from the viewpoint of material orthotropy., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We investigate the mechanical behavior of a confined granular packing of irregular polyhedral particles under repeated heating and cooling cycles by means of numerical simulations with the Non-Smooth Contact Dynamics method. Assuming a homogeneous temperature distribution as well as constant temperature rate, we study the effect of the container shape, and coefficients of thermal expansions on the pressure buildup at the confining walls and the density evolution. We observe that small changes in the opening angle of the confinement can lead to a drastic peak pressure reduction. Furthermore, the displacement fields over several thermal cycles are obtained and we discover the formation of convection cells inside the granular material having the shape of a torus. The root mean square of the vorticity is then calculated from the displacement fields and a quadratic dependency on the ratio of thermal expansion coefficients is established.

We study the fragment size distributions after crushing of single and many particles under uniaxial compression inside a cylindrical container by means of numerical simulations. Under the assumption that breaking goes through the bulk of the particle we obtain the size distributions of fragments for both cases after large displacements. For the single particle crushing, this fragmentation mechanism produces a log-normal size distribution, which deviates from the power-law distribution of fragment sizes for the packed bed. We show that as the breaking process evolves, a power-law dependency on the displacement is present for the single grain, while for the many grains system, the distribution converges to a steady state. We further investigate the force networks and the average coordination number as a function of the particle size, which gives inside about the origin of the power-law distributions for the granular assembly under uniaxial compression., Comment: 12 figures

We present a novel method for fluid structure interaction (FSI) simulations where an original 2nd-order curved space lattice Boltzmann fluid solver (LBM) is coupled to a finite element method (FEM) for thin shells. The LBM can work independently on a standard lattice in curved coordinates without the need for interpolation, re-meshing or an immersed boundary. The LBM distribution functions are transformed dynamically under coordinate change. In addition, force and momentum can be calculated on the nodes exactly in any geometry. Furthermore, the FEM shell is a complete numerical tool with implementations such as growth, self-contact and strong external forces. We show resolution convergent error for standard tests under metric deformation. Mass and volume conservation, momentum transfer, boundary-slip and pressure maintenance are verified through specific examples. Additionally, a brief deformation stability analysis is carried out. Next, we study the interaction of a square fluid flow channel to a deformable shell. Finally, we simulate a flag at moderate Reynolds number, air flow channel. The scheme is limited to small deformations of O(10%) relative to domain size, by improving its stability the method can be naturally extended to multiple applications without further implementations., Comment: 18 pages, 19 figures

In particle-laden flows through porous media, porosity and permeability are significantly affected by the deposition and erosion of particles. Experiments show that the permeability evolution of a porous medium with respect to a particle suspension is not smooth, but rather exhibits significant jumps followed by longer periods of continuous permeability decrease. Their origin seems to be related to internal flow path reorganization by avalanches of deposited material due to erosion inside the porous medium. We apply neutron tomography to resolve the spatio-temporal evolution of the pore space during clogging and unclogging to prove the hypothesis of flow path reorganization behind the permeability jumps. This mechanistic understanding of clogging phenomena is relevant for a number of applications from oil production to filters or suffosion as the mechanisms behind sinkhole formation., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures

The early strength evolution of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) is studied by a set of non-standard mechanical tests for compressive, tensile, shear and bending failure. The results are applicable in an industrial environment for process control, e.g. of slip casting with adaptive molds in robotic fabrication. A procedure for collapsing data to a master evolution curve is presented that allows to distinguish two regimes in the evolution. In the first, the material is capable of undergoing large localized plastic deformation, as expected from thixotropic yield stress fluids. This is followed by a transition to cohesive frictional material behavior dominated by crack growth. The typical differences in tensile and compressive strength of hardened concrete are observed to originate at the transition. Finally, the evolution of a limit surface in principal stress space is constructed and discussed.

We employ a novel fluid-particle model to study the shearing behavior of granular soils under different saturation levels, ranging from the dry material via the capillary bridge regime to higher saturation levels with percolating clusters. The full complexity of possible liquid morphologies is taken into account, implying the formation of isolated arbitrary-sized liquid clusters with individual Laplace pressures that evolve by liquid exchange via films on the grain surface. Liquid clusters can grow in size, shrink, merge and split, depending on local conditions, changes of accessible liquid and the pore space morphology determined by the granular phase. This phase is represented by a discrete particle model based on Contact Dynamics, where capillary forces exerted from a liquid phase add to the motion of spherical particles. We study the macroscopic response of the system due to an external compression force at various liquid contents with the help of triaxial shear tests. The mechanical behavior of continuous fiber reinforced granular columns is simulated by means of a Discrete Element Model. Spherical particles are randomly deposited simultaneously with a wire, that is deployed following different patterns inside of a flexible cylinder for triaxial compression testing. We quantify the effect of three different fiber deployment patterns on the failure envelope, represented by Mohr-Coulomb cones, and derive suggestions for improved deployment strategies.

Wood, due to its biological origin, has the capacity to interact with water. Sorption/desorption of moisture is accompanied with swelling/shrinkage and softening/hardening of its stiffness. The correct prediction of the behavior of wood components undergoing environmental loading requires that the moisture behavior and mechanical behavior of wood are considered in a coupled manner. We propose a comprehensive framework using a fully coupled poromechanical approach, where its multiscale implementation provides the capacity to take into account, directly, the exact geometry of the wood cellular structure, using computational homogenization. A hierarchical model is used to take into account the subcellular composite-like organization of the material. Such advanced modeling requires high resolution experimental data for the appropriate determination of inputs and for its validation. High-resolution x-ray tomography, digital image correlation, and neutron imaging are presented as valuable methods to provide the required information.

Drying induced cracking of concrete surfaces and repair layers is a common problem. A principal cause for this type of cracking is the moisture and resulting contraction gradient that develops in the cement paste matrix upon drying. This phenomenon has been experimentally quantified in unconfined hardened cement paste samples using a fluorescent resin impregnation technique. The effects of sample thickness and drying method on surface crack density and crack penetration depth are reported and explained. Finite element modelling of moisture gradients indicate the important role of the film coefficient in desiccation cracking of unconfined samples. The critical thickness for samples to remain crack-free upon drying was in the range of 2-5 mm depending on drying method. In thicker samples a crack spacing doubling process was observed that is in agreement with theoretical predictions.

Polyelectrolyte gels are a very attractive class of actuation materials with remarkable electronic and mechanical properties with a great similarity to biological contractile tissues. They consist of a polymer network with ionizable groups and a liquid phase with mobile ions. Absorption and delivery of solvent lead to a large change of volume. This mechanism can be triggered by chemical (change of salt concentration or pH of solution surrounding the gel), electrical, thermal or optical stimuli. Due to this capability, these gels can be used as actuators for technical applications, where large swelling and shrinkage is desired. In the present work chemically stimulated polymer gels in a solution bath are investigated. To adequately describe the different complicated phenomena occurring in these gels, they can be modeled on different scales. Therefore, models based on the statistical theory and porous media theory, as well as a coupled multi-field model and a discrete element formulation are derived and employed. In this paper, the coupled multi-field model and the discrete element model for chemical stimulation of a polymer gel film with and without domain deformation are employed. Based on these results, the presented formulations are compared and conclusions on their applicability in engineering practice are finally drawn.

The transverse hygro-expansion of the Norway spruce wood is studied on the growth ring level using digital image correlation. This non-destructive technique offers the possibility to contactless study deformation fields of relatively large areas. The measured full-field strains are segmented into individual growth rings. Whereas radial strains closely follow the density progression with the maximum in the dense latewood, tangential and shear strain remain constant except for positions around the edges of the sample. A simple FE three phase growth ring model is in good agreement with the experimental values. The selective activation of individual phases like earlywood, transitionwood and latewood demonstrates that the radial hygro-expansion is dominated by the earlywood deformation, whereas tangential deformation is a complex interplay of expansion and compression that needs all tissues to fully develop.

The alternating earlywood and latewood growth ring structure has a strong influence on the mechanical performance of Norway spruce. In the current study, tensile tests in the longitudinal and tangential directions were performed on a series of specimens representing one growth ring at varying relative humidities. All tested mechanical parameters, namely modulus of elasticity and ultimate tensile stress, followed the density distribution in the growth ring, with the minimum values in earlywood and the maximum values in latewood. The samples were conditioned at three the relative humidities 50%, 65% and 95%. With increasing relative humidity, the values of the mechanical parameters were found to decrease. However, due to the high local variability, this decrease was not statistically significant. The test in the tangential direction on a set of earlywood and latewood specimens at 65% relative humidity revealed a similar limit of linear elasticity for both early- and latewood. Where the strength of both tissues was equal, the strain at failure was significantly greater for earlywood. Furthermore, the portion of the non-linear stress/strain behavior for earlywood was significantly greater. A Weibull analysis on the ultimate tensile strength revealed a tissue-independent Weibull modulus, which indicates similar defect distributions. For both, the failure occurred in the middle lamella.

The failure of adhesive bondlines has been studied at the microscopic level via tensile tests. Stable crack propagation could be generated by means of samples with improved geometry, which made in-situ observations possible. The interaction of cracks with adhesive bondlines under various angles to the crack propagation was the focus of this study as well as the respective loading situations for the adhesives UF, PUR, and PVAc, which have distinctly different mechanical behaviors. It is shown how adhesive properties influence the occurrence of certain failure mechanisms and determine their appearance and order of magnitude. With the observed failure mechanisms, it becomes possible to predict the propagation path of a crack through the specimen.

Water transport in wood is vital for the survival of trees. With synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy (SRXTM), it becomes possible to characterize and quantify the 3D network formed by vessels that are responsible for longitudinal transport. In the present paper, the spatial size dependence of vessels and the organization inside single growth rings in terms of vessel induced porosity was studied by SRXTM. Network characteristics, such as connectivity, were deduced by digital image analysis from the processed tomographic data and related to known complex network topologies.

Impact fragmentation is the underlying principle of comminution milling of dry, bulk solids. Unfortunately the outcome of the fragmentation process is more or less determined by the dimensionality of the impactor and its impact velocity. Since fragmentation is dominated by interfering shock waves, manipulating traveling shock waves and adding energy to the system during its fragmentation could be a promising approach to manipulate fragment mass distributions and energy input. In a former study we explored mechanisms in impact fragmentation of spheres, using a three-dimensional Discrete Element Model (DEM). This work is focused on studying how single spheres fragment when impacted on a planar vibrating target.

We propose a modified Invasion Percolation (IP) model to simulate the infiltration of glue into a porous medium under gravity in 2D. Initially, the medium is saturated with air and then invaded by a fluid that has a hardening effect taking place from the interface towards the interior by contact with the air. To take into account that interfacial hardening, we use an IP model where capillary pressures of the growth sites are increased with time. In our model, if a site stays for a certain time at interface, it becomes a hard site and cannot be invaded anymore. That represents the glue interface becoming hard due to exposition with the air. Buoyancy forces are included in this system through the Bond number which represents the competition between the hydrostatic and capillary forces. We then compare our results with results from literature of non-hardening fluids in each regime of Bond number. We see that the invasion patterns change strongly with hardening while the non-hardening behavior remains basically not affected.

In this paper, we study the response of 2D framed structures made of rectangular cells, to the sudden removal of columns. We employ a simulation algorithm based on the Discrete Element Method, where the structural elements are represented by elasto-plastic Euler Bernoulli beams with elongation-rotation failure threshold. The effect of structural cell slenderness and of topological hierarchy on the dynamic residual strength after damage $\ROne$ is investigated. Topologically \textit{hierarchical} frames have a primary structure made of few massive elements, while \textit{homogeneous} frames are made of many thin elements. We also show how $\ROne$ depends on the activated collapse mechanisms, which are determined by the mechanical hierarchy between beams and columns, i.e. by their relative strength and stiffness. Finally, principles of robustness-oriented capacity design which seem to be in contrast to the conventional anti-seismic capacity design are addressed.

In this paper, we study the progressive collapse of 3D framed structures made of reinforced concrete after the sudden loss of a column. The structures are represented by elasto-plastic Euler Bernoulli beams with elongation-rotation failure threshold. We performed simulations using the Discrete Element Method considering inelastic collisions between the structural elements. The results show what collapse initiation and impact-driven propagation mechanisms are activated in structures with different geometric and mechanical features. Namely, we investigate the influence of the cross sectional size and reinforcement $\alpha$ and of the plastic capacity $\beta$ of the structural elements. We also study the final collapse extent and the fragment size distribution and their relation to $\alpha$, $\beta$ and to the observed collapse mechanisms. Finally, we compare the damage response of structures with symmetric and asymmetric reinforcement in the beams.

The hygro-mechanical behavior of a hierarchical cellular material, i.e. growth rings of softwood is investigated using a two-scale micro-mechanics model based on a computational homogenization technique. The lower scale considers the individual wood cells of varying geometry and dimensions. Honeycomb unit cells with periodic boundary conditions are utilized to calculate the mechanical properties and swelling coefficients of wood cells. Using the cellular scale results, the anisotropy in mechanical and swelling behavior of a growth ring in transverse directions is investigated. Predicted results are found to be comparable to experimental data. It is found that the orthotropic swelling properties of the cell wall in thin-walled earlywood cells produce anisotropic swelling behavior while, in thick latewood cells, this anisotropy vanishes. The proposed approach provides the ability to consider the complex microstructure when predicting the effective mechanical and swelling properties of softwood.

A new approach for determining effective mechanical bondline properties using a combined experimental-numerical modal analysis technique is proposed. After characterizing clear spruce wood boards, an adhesive layer is applied to the boards surfaces. The shift of the eigenfrequencies resulting from the adhesive layer together with information on the bondline geometry can then be used to inversely determine the mechanical properties of the adhesive layer using Finite Element Models. The calculated values for clear wood as well as for the adhesive layer lie within reasonable ranges, thus demonstrating the methods potential.

Fragmentation can be observed in nature and in everyday life on a wide range of length scales and for all kinds of technical applications. Most studies on dynamic failure focus on the behaviour of bulk systems in one, two and three dimensions under impact and explosive loading, showing universal power law behaviour of fragment size distribution. However, hardly any studies have been devoted to fragmentation of shells. We present a detailed experimental and theoretical study on the fragmentation of closed thin shells of various materials, due to an excess load inside the system and impact with a hard wall. Characteristic fragmentation mechanisms are identified by means of a high speed camera and fragment shapes and mass distributions are evaluated. Theoretical rationalisation is given by means of stochastic break-up models and large-scale discrete element simulations with spherical shell systems under different extreme loading situations. By this we ex-plain fragment shapes and distributions and prove a power law for the fragment mass distribution. Satisfactory agreement between experimental findings and nu-merical predictions of the exponents of the power laws for the fragment shapes is obtained.

We explore possible applications of the Lattice-Boltzmann Method for the simulation of geophysical flows. This fluid solver, while successful in other fields, is still rarely used for geotechnical applications. We show how the standard method can be modified to represent free-surface realization of mudflows, debris flows, and in general any plastic flow, through the implementation of a Bingham constitutive model. The chapter is completed by an example of a full-scale simulation of a plastic fluid flowing down an inclined channel and depositing on a flat surface. Discrete element modelling (DEM) is one of the most efficient computational approaches to the fracture processes of heterogeneous materials on mesoscopic scales. From the dynamics of single crack propagation through the statistics of crack ensembles to the rapid fragmentation of materials DEM had a substantial contribution to our understanding over the past decades. Recently, the combination of DEM with other simulation techniques like Finite Element Modelling further extended the field of applicability. In this paper we briefly review the motivations and basic idea behind the DEM approach to cohesive particulate matter and then we give an overview of on-going developments and applications of the method focusing on two fields where recent success has been achieved. We discuss current challenges of this rapidly evolving field and outline possible future perspectives and debates.

The brittle fragmentation of spheres is studied numerically by a 3D Discrete Element Model. Large scale computer simulations are performed with models that consist of agglomerates of many spherical particles, interconnected by beam-truss elements. We focus on a detailed description of the fragmentation process and study several fragmentation mechanisms involved. The evolution of meridional cracks is studied in detail. These cracks are found to initiate in the inside of the specimen with quasi-periodic angular distribution and give a broad peak in the fragment mass distribution for large fragments that can be fitted by a two-parameter Weibull distribution. The results prove to be independent of the degree of disorder in the model, but mean fragment sizes scale with velocity. Our results reproduce many experimental observations of fragment shapes, impact energy dependence or mass distribution, and significantly improve the understanding of the fragmentation process for impact fracture since we have full access to the failure conditions and evolution., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:0711.2993

The fracture behavior of fiber-ceramics like C/C-SiC strongly depends on the initial damage arising during the production process. We study the transverse cracking of the 90{\deg} ply in [0/90]S cross-ply laminates due to the thermochemical degradation of the matrix material during the carbonization process by means of a discrete element method. The crack morphology strongly depends on the fiber-matrix interface properties, the transverse ply thickness as well as on the carbonization process itself. To model the 90{\deg} ply a two-dimensional triangular lattice of springs is constructed where nodes of the lattice represent fibers. Springs with random breaking thresholds model the disordered matrix material and interfaces. The spring-lattice is coupled by interface springs to two rigid bars which capture the two 0{\deg} plies or adjacent sublaminates in the model. Molecular dynamics simulation is used to follow the time evolution of the model system. It was found that under gradual heating of the specimen, after some distributed cracking, segmentation cracks occur in the 90{\deg} ply which then develop into a saturated state where the ply cannot support additional load. The dependence of the micro-structure of damage on the ply thickness and on the disorder in spring properties is also studied. A method to simulate orthotropic behaviour in thin shell finite elements is proposed. The approach is based on the transformation of shape function derivatives, resulting in a new orthogonal basis aligned to a specified preferred direction for all elements. This transformation is carried out solely in the undeformed state leaving minimal additional impact on the computational effort expended to simulate orthotropic materials compared to isotropic, resulting in a straightforward and highly efficient implementation. This method is implemented for rotation-free triangular shells using the finite element framework built on the Kirchhoff--Love theory employing subdivision surfaces. The accuracy of this approach is demonstrated using the deformation of a pinched hemispherical shell (with a 18{\deg} hole) standard benchmark. To showcase the efficiency of this implementation, the wrinkling of orthotropic sheets under shear displacement is analyzed. Numerical simulations of thin sheets undergoing large deformations are computationally challenging. Depending on the scenario, they may spontaneously buckle, wrinkle, fold, or crumple. Nature's thin tissues often experience significant anisotropic growth, which can act as the driving force for such instabilities. We use a recently developed finite element model to simulate the rich variety of nonlinear responses of Kirchhoff-Love sheets. The model uses subdivision surface shape functions in order to guarantee convergence of the method, and to allow a finite element description of anisotropically growing sheets in the classical Rayleigh-Ritz formalism. We illustrate the great potential in this approach by simulating the inflation of airbags, the buckling of a stretched cylinder, as well as the formation and scaling of wrinkles at free boundaries of growing sheets. The packing problem of long thin filaments that are injected into confined spaces is of fundamental interest for physicists and biologists alike. How linear threads pack and coil is well known only for the ideal case of rigid containers, though. Here, we force long elastic rods into flexible spatial confinement borne by an elastic shell to examine under which conditions recently acquired knowledge on wire packing in rigid spheres breaks down. We find that unlike in rigid cavities, friction plays a key role by giving rise to the emergence of two distinct packing patterns. At low friction, the wire densely coils into an ordered toroidal bundle with semi-ellipsoidal cross-section, while at high friction, it packs into a highly disordered, hierarchic structure. These two morphologies are shown to be separated by a continuous phase transition. Our findings demonstrate the dramatic impact of friction and confinement elasticity on filamentous packing and might drive future research on such systems in physics, biology and even medical technology toward including these mutually interacting effects., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We propose a model for increasing liquid saturation in a granular packing which can account for liquid redistribution at saturation levels beyond the well-studied capillary bridge regime. The model is capable of resolving and combining capillary bridges, menisci and fully saturated pores to form local liquid clusters of any shape. They can exchange volume due to the local Laplace pressure gradient via a liquid film on the surfaces of grains. Local instabilities like Haines jumps trigger the discontinuous evolution of the liquid front. Structural elements made of laminated hardwood are increasingly used in timber engineering. In this combined numerical and experimental approach, damage onset and propagation in uni-directional and cross-laminated samples out of European beech due to climatic changes are studied. The inter- and intra-laminar damage evolution is characterized for various configurations adhesively bonded by three structural adhesive systems. Typical situations are simulated by means of a comprehensive moisture-dependent non-linear rheological finite element model for wood with the capability to capture delaminations. The simulations give insight into the role of different strain components such as visco-elastic, mechano-sorptive, plastic, and hygro-elastic deformations under changing moisture content in progressive damage and delamination. We investigate the fragmentation process of solid materials with crystalline and amorphous phases using the discrete element method. Damage initiates inside spherical samples above the contact zone in a region where the circumferential stress field is tensile. Cracks initiated in this region grow to form meridional planes. If the collision energy exceeds a critical value which depends on the material's internal structure, cracks reach the sample surface resulting in fragmentation. We show that this primary fragmentation mechanism is very robust with respect to the internal structure of the material. For all configurations, a sharp transition from the damage to the fragmentation regime is observed, with smaller critical collision energies for crystalline samples. The mass distribution of the fragments follows a power law for small fragments with an exponent that is characteristic for the branching merging process of unstable cracks. Wood as the most important natural and renewable building material plays an important role in the construction sector. Nevertheless, its hygroscopic character basically affects all related mechanical properties leading to degradation of material stiffness and strength over the service life. Accordingly, to attain reliable design of the timber structures, the influence of moisture evolution and the role of time- and moisture-dependent behaviors have to be taken into account. For this purpose, in the current study a 3D orthotropic elasto-plastic, visco-elastic, mechano-sorptive constitutive model for wood, with all material constants being defined as a function of moisture content, is presented. The corresponding numerical integration approach, with additive decomposition of the total strain is developed and implemented within the framework of the finite element method (FEM). Moreover to preserve a quadratic rate of asymptotic convergence the consistent tangent operator for the whole model is derived. Functionality and capability of the presented material model are evaluated by performing several numerical verification simulations of wood components under different combinations of mechanical loading and moisture variation. Additionally, the flexibility and universality of the introduced model to predict the mechanical behavior of different species are demonstrated by the analysis of a hybrid wood element. Flexible barriers are increasingly used for the protection from debris flow in mountainous terrain due to their low cost and environmental impact. However, a numerical tool for rational design of such structures is still missing. In this work, a hybrid computational framework is presented, using a total Lagrangian formulation of the Finite Element Method (FEM) to represent a flexible barrier. The actions exerted on the structure by a debris flow are obtained from simultaneous simulations of the flow of a fluid-grain mixture, using two conveniently coupled solvers: the Discrete Element Method (DEM) governs the motion of the grains, while the free-surface non-Newtonian fluid phase is solved using the Lattice-Boltzmann Method (LBM). Simulations on realistic geometries show the dependence of the momentum transfer on the barrier on the composition of the debris flow, challenging typical assumptions made during the design process today. In particular, we demonstrate that both grains and fluid contribute in a non-negligible way to the momentum transfer. Moreover, we show how the flexibility of the barrier reduces its vulnerability to structural collapse, and how the stress is distributed on its fabric, highlighting potential weak points., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures

A multi-scale scheme for the invasion percolation of rock fracture networks with heterogeneous fracture aperture fields is proposed. Inside fractures, fluid transport is calculated on the finest scale and found to be localized in channels as a consequence of the aperture field. The channel network is characterized and reduced to a vectorized artificial channel network (ACN). Different realizations of ACNs are used to systematically calculate efficient apertures for fluid transport inside differently sized fractures as well as fracture intersection and entry properties. Typical situations in fracture networks are parameterized by fracture inclination, flow path length along the fracture and intersection lengths in the entrance and outlet zones of fractures. Space-saving design is a requirement that is encountered in biological systems and the development of modern technological devices alike. Many living organisms dynamically pack their polymer chains, filaments or membranes inside of deformable vesicles or soft tissue like cell walls, chorions, and buds. Surprisingly little is known about morphogenesis due to growth in flexible confinements - perhaps owing to the daunting complexity lying in the nonlinear feedback between packed material and expandable cavity. Here we show by experiments and simulations how geometric and material properties lead to a plethora of morphologies when elastic filaments are growing far beyond the equilibrium size of a flexible thin sheet they are confined in. Depending on friction, sheet flexibility and thickness, we identify four distinct morphological phases emerging from bifurcation and present the corresponding phase diagram. A thin shell finite element approach based on Loop's subdivision surfaces is proposed, capable of dealing with large deformations and anisotropic growth. To this end, the Kirchhoff-Love theory of thin shells is derived and extended to allow for arbitrary in-plane growth. The simplicity and computational efficiency of the subdivision thin shell elements is outstanding, which is demonstrated on a few standard loading benchmarks. With this powerful tool at hand, we demonstrate the broad range of possible applications by numerical solution of several growth scenarios, ranging from the uniform growth of a sphere, to boundary instabilities induced by large anisotropic growth. A finite element program is presented to simulate the process of packing and coiling elastic wires in two- and three-dimensional confining cavities. The wire is represented by third order beam elements and embedded into a corotational formulation to capture the geometric nonlinearity resulting from large rotations and deformations. The hyperbolic equations of motion are integrated in time using two different integration methods from the Newmark family: an implicit iterative Newton-Raphson line search solver, and an explicit predictor-corrector scheme, both with adaptive time stepping. These two approaches reveal fundamentally different suitability for the problem of strongly self-interacting bodies found in densely packed cavities. Generalizing the spherical confinement symmetry investigated in recent studies, the packing of a wire in hard ellipsoidal cavities is simulated in the frictionless elastic limit. The main purpose of this work is to simulate two-phase flow in the form of immiscible displacement through anisotropic, three-dimensional (3D) discrete fracture networks (DFN). The considered DFNs are artificially generated, based on a general distribution function or are conditioned on measured data from deep geological investigations. We introduce several modifications to the invasion percolation (MIP) to incorporate fracture inclinations, intersection lines, as well as the hydraulic path length inside the fractures. Additionally a trapping algorithm is implemented that forbids any advance of the invading fluid into a region, where the defending fluid is completely encircled by the invader and has no escape route. We investigate the morphology of thin discs and rings growing in the circumferential direction. Recent analytical results suggest that this growth produces symmetric excess cones (e-cones). We study the stability of such solutions considering self-contact and bending stress. We show that, contrary to what was assumed in previous analytical solutions, beyond a critical growth factor, no symmetric \textit{e}-cone solution is energetically minimal any more. Instead, we obtain skewed e-cone solutions having lower energy, characterized by a skewness angle and repetitive spiral winding with increasing growth. The anisotropy of wood within the radial-tangential (RT) growth plane has a major influence on the cracking behavior perpendicular to grain. Within the scope of this work, a two-dimensional discrete element model is developed, consisting of beam elements for the representation of the micro structure of wood. Molecular dynamics simulation is used to follow the time evolution of the model system during the damage evolution in the RT plane under various loading conditions. The combination of Finite Element Method (FEM) simulation and experimental photo-elasticity provides both qualitative and quantitative information about the stress field in a polymer composite and particularly along the fibre-matrix boundary. Investigations were made using model specimens containing up to five parallel glass fibres loaded at angles from 0 to 15 degrees. The material properties of the geometrically equivalent FE models are calibrated using the experimental photoelastic outputs. In contrast to the experimental results, FE simulations provide full 3D stress fields. For verification purposes, the 3D stress fields are reduced to two-dimensional synthetic photoelastic phase images, showing good agreement. Furthermore, detailed studies on the components of the stress tensor, particularly statements concerning the shear transmitted by fibre-matrix boundary, progressive fibre failure and the effect of load angle variation are presented., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures in eps format

We study the transverse cracking of the 90 degree ply in [0/90] cross-ply laminates by means of a discrete element method. To model the 90 degree ply a two-dimensional triangular lattice of springs is constructed where nodes of the lattice model fibers, and springs with random breaking thresholds represent the disordered matrix material in between. The spring-lattice is coupled by interface springs to two rigid bars which represent the two 0 degree plies in the model, which could be sublaminate as well. Molecular dynamics simulation is used to follow the time evolution of the model system. It was found that under gradual loading of the specimen, after some distributed cracking, segmentation cracks occur in the 90 degree ply which then develop into a saturated state where the ply cannot support additional load. The stress distribution between two neighboring segmentation cracks was determined, furthermore, the dependence of the microstructure of damage on the ply's thickness was also studied. To give a quantitative characterization of stiffness degradation, the Young modulus of the system is monitored as a function of the density of segmentation cracks. The results of the simulations are in satisfactory agreement with experimental findings and with the results of analytic calculations., Comment: 37 pages, 10 figures
