1. Crystallization kinetics of equimolar liquid crystalline mixture and its components

Abstract

The new equimolar mixture comprises liquid crystalline compounds MHPOBC and partially fluorinated 3F2HPhF6. The phase sequence of the mixture is determined by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and broadband dielectric spectroscopy. The enantiotropic smectic A*, C*, and CA* phases are observed for the mixture. Only partial crystallization of the mixture is observed during cooling at 2-40 K/min and the remaining smectic CA* phase undergoes vitrification. In contrast, the crystallization of the pure components is complete or almost complete for the same range of cooling rates. The kinetics of the non-isothermal and isothermal crystallization of the mixture and pure components are investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. The non-isothermal data are analyzed by the isoconversional method, while the isothermal data are analyzed using the Avrami model. Typically, the nucleation-controlled crystallization kinetics are observed.

2. Ferroelectric nematics: Materials with high permittivity or low resistivity?

Abstract

Two models have recently been proposed for a description of dielectric spectroscopy measurements of ferroelectric nematics (NF) in thin planar capacitors. The polarization-external capacitance Goldstone reorientation mode (PCG model) considers the NF layer between the electrodes as an effective low resistivity material, the resistivity being inversely proportional to the square of polarisation magnitude. The high-{\epsilon} model considers the NF material as having a huge permittivity due to the ease of polarisation rotation. In this paper we study implications of both models and show, why both models describe majority of the observed dielectric spectroscopy results equally well. We point out differences among the models predictions and explain why some observations can be explained only by the high-{\epsilon} model. The major difference between the models is that the high-{\epsilon} model predicts that the increase in the cell thickness can lead to an increase in the frequency range within which capacitors filled with NF material can be used for energy storage while within the PCG model this frequency range reduces with increasing capacitor thickness. Within both models a crucial parameter which determines the behaviour of the capacitors filled with a NF material is parasitic resistance, primarily due to the electrode resistance. We present measurements of electrode resistance and find that in ITO cells it is of the order of few hundred ohms.

3. Primal-dual algorithm for weakly convex functions under sharpness conditions

Abstract

We investigate the convergence of the primal-dual algorithm for composite optimization problems when the objective functions are weakly convex. We introduce a modified duality gap function, which is a lower bound of the standard duality gap function. Under the sharpness condition of this new function, we identify the area around the set of saddle points where we obtain the convergence of the primal-dual algorithm. We give numerical examples and applications in image denoising and deblurring to demonstrate our results.

Abstract

Over the past three decades, describing the reality surrounding us using the language of complex networks has become very useful and therefore popular. One of the most important features, especially of real networks, is their complexity, which often manifests itself in a fractal or even multifractal structure. As a generalisation of fractal analysis, multifractal analysis of complex networks is a useful tool for the identification and quantitative description of the spatial hierarchy of both theoretical and numerical fractal patterns. Nowadays, there are many methods of multifractal analysis. However, all these methods take into account only the fact of connection between nodes (and eventually the weight of edges) and do not take into account the real positions (coordinates) of nodes in space. However, intuition suggests that the geometry of network nodes' position should have a significant impact on its true fractal structure. Many networks identified in nature (e.g. air connection networks, energy networks, social networks, mountain ridge networks, networks of neurones in the brain, street networks) have their own often unique and characteristic geometry, which is not taken into account in the identification process of multifractality in commonly used methods. In this paper, we propose a multifractal network analysis method that takes into account both connections between nodes and the location coordinates of nodes (network geometry). We show the results for different geometrical variants of the same network and reveal that this method, contrary to the commonly used method, is sensitive to changes in network geometry. This article explores the role of hackathons for good in building a community of software and hardware developers focused on addressing global SDG challenges. We theorise this movement as computational diplomacy: a decentralised, participatory process for digital governance that leverages collective intelligence to tackle major global issues. Analysing Devpost and GitHub data reveals that 30% of hackathons since 2010 have addressed SDG topics, employing diverse technologies to create innovative solutions. Hackathons serve as crucial kairos moments, sparking innovation bursts that drive both immediate project outcomes and long-term production. We propose that these events harness the neurobiological basis of human cooperation and empathy, fostering a collective sense of purpose and reducing interpersonal prejudice. This bottom-up approach to digital governance integrates software development, human collective intelligence, and collective action, creating a dynamic model for transformative change. Abstract

This study presents a demonstration of the surface morphology behavior of gallium antimonide (GaSb) layers deposited on gallium arsenide (GaAs) (100) substrates using three different methods: metamorphic, interfacial misfit (IMF) matrix, and a method based on a Polish patent application number P.443805. The first two methods are commonly used, while the third differs in the sequence of successive steps and the presence of Be doping at the initial growth stage. By comparing GaSb layers made by these methods for the same growth parameters, the most favorable procedure for forming a GaSb buffer layer is selected. Using GaAs substrates with a GaSb buffer layer is a cheaper alternative to using GaSb substrates in infrared detector structures based on II-type superlattices T2SL, such as InAs/GaSb. The quality of the GaSb buffer layer determines the quality of the subsequent layers that form the entire T2SL and affects factors such as dark current in terms of application, Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures

7. Outer Approximation Scheme for Weakly Convex Constrained Optimization Problems

Abstract

Outer approximation methods have long been employed to tackle a variety of optimization problems, including linear programming, in the 1960s, and continue to be effective for solving variational inequalities, general convex problems, as well as mixed-integer linear, and nonlinear programming problems. In this work, we introduce a novel outer approximation scheme specifically designed for solving weakly convex constrained optimization problems. The key idea lies in utilizing quadratic cuts, rather than the traditional linear cuts, and solving an outer approximation problem at each iteration in the form of a Quadratically Constrained Quadratic Programming (QCQP) problem. The primary result demonstrated in this work is that every convergent subsequence generated by the proposed outer approximation scheme converges to a global minimizer of the general weakly convex optimization problem under consideration. To enhance the practical implementation of this method, we also propose two variants of the algorithm. The efficacy of our approach is illustrated through its application to two distinct problems: the circular packing problem and the Neyman-Pearson classification problem, both of which are reformulated within the framework of weakly convex constrained optimization.

8. Privacy-preserving federated prediction of pain intensity change based on multi-center survey data

Abstract

Background: Patient-reported survey data are used to train prognostic models aimed at improving healthcare. However, such data are typically available multi-centric and, for privacy reasons, cannot easily be centralized in one data repository. Models trained locally are less accurate, robust, and generalizable. We present and apply privacy-preserving federated machine learning techniques for prognostic model building, where local survey data never leaves the legally safe harbors of the medical centers. Methods: We used centralized, local, and federated learning techniques on two healthcare datasets (GLA:D data from the five health regions of Denmark and international SHARE data of 27 countries) to predict two different health outcomes. We compared linear regression, random forest regression, and random forest classification models trained on local data with those trained on the entire data in a centralized and in a federated fashion. Results: In GLA:D data, federated linear regression (R2 0.34, RMSE 18.2) and federated random forest regression (R2 0.34, RMSE 18.3) models outperform their local counterparts (i.e., R2 0.32, RMSE 18.6, R2 0.30, RMSE 18.8) with statistical significance. We also found that centralized models (R2 0.34, RMSE 18.2, R2 0.32, RMSE 18.5, respectively) did not perform significantly better than the federated models. In SHARE, the federated model (AC 0.78, AUROC: 0.71) and centralized model (AC 0.84, AUROC: 0.66) perform significantly better than the local models (AC: 0.74, AUROC: 0.69). Conclusion: Federated learning enables the training of prognostic models from multi-center surveys without compromising privacy and with only minimal or no compromise regarding model performance.

9. The single ion of Vanadium in an individual Quantum Dot

Abstract

We present the basic properties of a new physical system: an individual V2+ ion embedded into an individual quantum dot. The system is realized utilizing molecular beam epitaxy and it is observed using a low-temperature polarization-resolved magneto-photoluminescence. The nature of the system is confirmed by observation of the excitonic lines split due to the interactions of a vanadium ion with carriers confined in a CdTe/ZnTe quantum dot. Observed data are explained by the numerical modeling which includes s,p-d exchange interaction, Zeeman splitting of the exciton and the ion, diamagnetic shift, and the presence of shear strain within the quantum dot. The fundamental state of vanadium exhibits a spin 1/2 making this system a textbook localized qubit.

Abstract

The discovery of fluid states of matter with spontaneous bulk polar order is appreciated as a major discovery in the fields of soft matter and liquid crystals. Typically, this manifests as polar order superimposed atop conventional phase structures and is thus far limited to orthogonal phase types. Here we report a family of materials which exhibit a previously unseen state of matter which we conclude is a polar smectic C phase, and so we term it SmC${_\textrm{P}}$. The spontaneous polarisation of the SmC${_\textrm{P}}$ phase is over two orders of magnitude larger than that found in conventional ferroelectric SmC phase of chiral materials used in some LCD devices. Fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations faithfully and spontaneously reproduce the proposed structure and associated bulk properties; comparison of experimental and simulated X-ray scattering patterns shows excellent agreement. The materials disclosed here have significantly smaller dipole moments than typical polar liquid crystals such as RM734 which suggests the role of molecular electrical polarity in generating polar order is perhaps overstated, a view supported by consideration of other molecular systems.

11. Variability and stellar pulsation incidence in Am/Fm stars using TESS and Gaia data

Abstract

Aims. We aim to study chemically peculiar Am and Fm stars, distinguished by their unique abundance patterns, which are crucial for studying mixing processes in intermediate-mass stars. These stars provide a window into the atomic diffusion in their stellar envelopes, the evolution-dependent changes in mixing, and the resulting effects on pulsation mechanisms. Methods. This study examines the pulsation characteristics of the Am/Fm star group. Our analysis encompasses 1276 stars (available as catalogues on GitHub), utilising data from TESS and Gaia and focusing on stars from the Renson catalogue. Results. In our sample, 51% (649 stars) display no variability, thus categorised as constant stars. Among the remaining, 25% (318 stars) are pulsating Am/Fm and {\rho} Puppis stars, including 20% (261 stars) that are exclusively Am/Fm stars. Additionally, 17% (210 stars) show variability indicative of binarity and/or rotational modulation and 7% (93 stars) are eclipsing binaries. Of the pulsating stars, 10% (32 stars) are {\gamma} Doradus type, 54% (172 stars) {\delta} Scuti type, and 36% (114 stars) are hybrids, underlining a diverse pulsational behaviour of Am/Fm stars. Conclusions. 12. Nematic and smectic phases with proper ferroelectric order

Abstract

A material showing a sequence of three ferroelectric liquid crystalline phases below the paraelectric nematic phase has been synthesized and studied. The polar order of molecules appearing due to the dipole-dipole interactions in the NF phase is preserved also in the smectic phases: orthogonal SmAF and tilted SmCF. The ferroelectric ground state of both smectic phases is confirmed by their second harmonic generation activity and polarization switching. In the SmCF phase the polarization becomes oriented to the electric field by decreasing the tilt angle to zero. Although both smectic phases are ferroelectric in nature, their dielectric response is found to be very different.

13. The Impact of the Virtualization of Scholarly Conferences on the Gender Structure of Conference Contributors

Abstract

This study investigates whether the virtualization of academic conferences in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic changed the gender structure of conference participants. We explored this question utilizing authorship data from the Web of Science Conference Proceedings Citation Index for 180 conferences in 30 conference series held between 2017 and 2023. At least one edition of each analyzed conference series was launched in a virtual or hybrid form. This sample enables a comparison of differences in the gender participation of conference authors while controlling for heterogeneity among conference series. Using linear and logistic regression models, we identified a positive difference in women's involvement in virtual and hybrid conferences compared to onsite events. However, this effect was due less to the increased participation of women in virtual and hybrid conferences than to the decreased participation of women in the onsite editions of the analyzed conference series.

Abstract

Anomaly detection in computational workflows is critical for ensuring system reliability and security. However, traditional rule-based methods struggle to detect novel anomalies. This paper leverages large language models (LLMs) for workflow anomaly detection by exploiting their ability to learn complex data patterns. Two approaches are investigated: 1) supervised fine-tuning (SFT), where pre-trained LLMs are fine-tuned on labeled data for sentence classification to identify anomalies, and 2) in-context learning (ICL) where prompts containing task descriptions and examples guide LLMs in few-shot anomaly detection without fine-tuning. The paper evaluates the performance, efficiency, generalization of SFT models, and explores zero-shot and few-shot ICL prompts and interpretability enhancement via chain-of-thought prompting. 16. Modeling Hydraulic Fracture Entering Stress Barrier: Theory and Practical Recommendations

Abstract

Numerical modeling of hydraulic fracturing is complicated when a fracture reaches a stress barrier. For high barriers, it may require changing of a computational scheme. Despite there are examples of modeling propagation through barriers, there is no general theory clarifying when and why conventional schemes may become inefficient, and how to overcome computational difficulties. The paper presents the theory and practical recommendations following from it. We start from the definition of the barrier intensity, which exposes that the barrier strength may change from zero for contrast-free propagation to infinity for channelized propagation. The analysis reveals two types of computational difficulties caused by spatial discretization: (i) general arising for fine grids and aggravated by a barrier; and (ii) specific, caused entirely by a strong barrier. The asymptotic approach which avoids spatial discretization is suggested. It is illustrated by solving bench-mark problems for barriers of arbitrary intensity. The analysis distinguishes three typical stages of the fracture penetration into a barrier, and provides theoretical values of the Nolte-Smith slope parameter and arrest time as functions of the barrier intensity. Special analysis establishes the accuracy and bounds of the asymptotic approach. It appears that the approach provides physically significant and accurate results for fracture penetration into high, intermediate and even weak stress barriers. On this basis, simple practical recommendations are given for modeling hydraulic fractures in rocks with stress barriers. The recommendations may be promptly implemented in any program using spatial discretization to model fracture propagation.

17. NEBULA: Neural Empirical Bayes Under Latent Representations for Efficient and Controllable Design of Molecular Libraries

Abstract

We present NEBULA, the first latent 3D generative model for scalable generation of large molecular libraries around a seed compound of interest. Such libraries are crucial for scientific discovery, but it remains challenging to generate large numbers of high quality samples efficiently. 3D-voxel-based methods have recently shown great promise for generating high quality samples de novo from random noise (Pinheiro et al., 2023). However, sampling in 3D-voxel space is computationally expensive and use in library generation is prohibitively slow. Here, we instead perform neural empirical Bayes sampling (Saremi & Hyvarinen, 2019) in the learned latent space of a vector-quantized variational autoencoder. NEBULA generates large molecular libraries nearly an order of magnitude faster than existing methods without sacrificing sample quality. Moreover, NEBULA generalizes better to unseen drug-like molecules, as demonstrated on two public datasets and multiple recently released drugs. We expect the approach herein to be highly enabling for machine learning-based drug discovery. The code is available at https://github.com/prescient-design/nebula

Abstract

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

Abstract

Since the creation of the Billboard Hot 100 music chart in 1958, the chart has been a window into the music consumption of Americans. Which songs succeed on the chart is decided by consumption volumes, which can be affected by consumer music taste, and other factors such as advertisement budgets, airplay time, the specifics of ranking algorithms, and more. Since its introduction, the chart has documented music consumerism through eras of globalization, economic growth, and the emergence of new technologies for music listening. In recent years, musicians and other hitmakers have voiced their worry that the music world is changing: Many claim that it is getting harder to make a hit but until now, the claims have not been backed using chart data. Here we show that the dynamics of the Billboard Hot 100 chart have changed significantly since the chart's founding in 1958, and in particular in the past 15 years. Whereas most songs spend less time on the chart now than songs did in the past, we show that top-1 songs have tripled their chart lifetime since the 1960s, the highest-ranked songs maintain their positions for far longer than previously, and the lowest-ranked songs are replaced more frequently than ever. At the same time, who occupies the chart has also changed over the years: In recent years, fewer new artists make it into the chart and more positions are occupied by established hit makers. Finally, investigating how song chart trajectories have changed over time, we show that historical song trajectories cluster into clear trajectory archetypes characteristic of the time period they were part of. 20. A Sagittarius-like simulated dwarf spheroidal galaxy from TNG50

Abstract

The Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal (Sgr dSph) galaxy provides one of the most convincing examples of tidal interaction between satellite galaxies and the Milky Way (MW). The main body of the dwarf was recently demonstrated to have an elongated, prolate, bar-like shape and to possess some internal rotation. Whether these features are temporary results of the strong tidal interaction at the recent pericenter passage or are due to a disky progenitor is a matter of debate. I present an analog of Sgr selected among bar-like galaxies from the TNG50 simulation of the IllustrisTNG project. The simulated dwarf is initially a disky galaxy with mass exceeding $10^{11}$ M$_\odot$ and evolves around a MW-like host on a tight orbit with seven pericenter passages and a period of about 1 Gyr. At the second pericenter passage, the disk transforms into a bar and the bar-like shape of the stellar component is preserved until the end of the evolution. The morphological transformation is accompanied by strong mass loss, leaving a dwarf with a final mass of below $10^{9}$ M$_\odot$. The gas is lost completely and the star formation ceases at the third pericenter passage. At the last pericenters, the dwarf possesses a bar-like shape, a little remnant rotation, and the metallicity gradient, which are consistent with observations. The more concentrated metal-rich stellar population rotates faster and has a lower velocity dispersion than the more extended metal-poor one. The metallicity distribution evolves so that the most metal-poor stars are stripped first, which explains the metallicity gradient detected in the Sgr stream. This study demonstrates that a dSph galaxy with properties akin to the Sgr dwarf can form from a disky progenitor with a mass of above $10^{11}$ M$_\odot$ by tidal evolution around the MW in the cosmological context., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract

A computational workflow, also known as workflow, consists of tasks that are executed in a certain order to attain a specific computational campaign. Computational workflows are commonly employed in science domains, such as physics, chemistry, genomics, to complete large-scale experiments in distributed and heterogeneous computing environments. However, running computations at such a large scale makes the workflow applications prone to failures and performance degradation, which can slowdown, stall, and ultimately lead to workflow failure. Learning how these workflows behave under normal and anomalous conditions can help us identify the causes of degraded performance and subsequently trigger appropriate actions to resolve them. However, learning in such circumstances is a challenging task because of the large volume of high-quality historical data needed to train accurate and reliable models. Generating such datasets not only takes a lot of time and effort but it also requires a lot of resources to be devoted to data generation for training purposes. Active learning is a promising approach to this problem. It is an approach where the data is generated as required by the machine learning model and thus it can potentially reduce the training data needed to derive accurate models. In this work, we present an active learning approach that is supported by an experimental framework, Poseidon-X, that utilizes a modern workflow management system and two cloud testbeds. We evaluate our approach using three computational workflows. For one workflow we run an end-to-end live active learning experiment, for the other two we evaluate our active learning algorithms using pre-captured data traces provided by the Flow-Bench benchmark. Our findings indicate that active learning not only saves resources, but it also improves the accuracy of the detection of anomalies.

Abstract

Transformers have recently gained prominence in long time series forecasting by elevating accuracies in a variety of use cases. Regrettably, in the race for better predictive performance the overhead of model architectures has grown onerous, leading to models with computational demand infeasible for most practical applications. To bridge the gap between high method complexity and realistic computational resources, we introduce the Residual Cyclic Transformer, ReCycle. ReCycle utilizes primary cycle compression to address the computational complexity of the attention mechanism in long time series. By learning residuals from refined smoothing average techniques, ReCycle surpasses state-of-the-art accuracy in a variety of application use cases. The reliable and explainable fallback behavior ensured by simple, yet robust, smoothing average techniques additionally lowers the barrier for user acceptance. At the same time, our approach reduces the run time and energy consumption by more than an order of magnitude, making both training and inference feasible on low-performance, low-power and edge computing devices. Abstract

Excellence in a wide variety of medical applications poses considerable challenges for AI, requiring advanced reasoning, access to up-to-date medical knowledge and understanding of complex multimodal data. Gemini models, with strong general capabilities in multimodal and long-context reasoning, offer exciting possibilities in medicine. Building on these core strengths of Gemini, we introduce Med-Gemini, a family of highly capable multimodal models that are specialized in medicine with the ability to seamlessly use web search, and that can be efficiently tailored to novel modalities using custom encoders. We evaluate Med-Gemini on 14 medical benchmarks, establishing new state-of-the-art (SoTA) performance on 10 of them, and surpass the GPT-4 model family on every benchmark where a direct comparison is viable, often by a wide margin. On the popular MedQA (USMLE) benchmark, our best-performing Med-Gemini model achieves SoTA performance of 91.1% accuracy, using a novel uncertainty-guided search strategy. On 7 multimodal benchmarks including NEJM Image Challenges and MMMU (health & medicine), Med-Gemini improves over GPT-4V by an average relative margin of 44.5%. We demonstrate the effectiveness of Med-Gemini's long-context capabilities through SoTA performance on a needle-in-a-haystack retrieval task from long de-identified health records and medical video question answering, surpassing prior bespoke methods using only in-context learning. Finally, Med-Gemini's performance suggests real-world utility by surpassing human experts on tasks such as medical text summarization, alongside demonstrations of promising potential for multimodal medical dialogue, medical research and education. Taken together, our results offer compelling evidence for Med-Gemini's potential, although further rigorous evaluation will be crucial before real-world deployment in this safety-critical domain.

Abstract

The increasing growth of data volume, and the consequent explosion in demand for computational power, are affecting scientific computing, as shown by the rise of extreme data scientific workflows. As the need for computing power increases, quantum computing has been proposed as a way to deliver it. It may provide significant theoretical speedups for many scientific applications (i.e., molecular dynamics, quantum chemistry, combinatorial optimization, and machine learning). Therefore, integrating quantum computers into the computing continuum constitutes a promising way to speed up scientific computation. However, the scientific computing community still lacks the necessary tools and expertise to fully harness the power of quantum computers in the execution of complex applications such as scientific workflows. In this work, we describe the main characteristics of quantum computing and its main benefits for scientific applications, then we formalize hybrid quantum-classic workflows, explore how to identify quantum components and map them onto resources. We demonstrate concepts on a real use case and define a software architecture for a hybrid workflow management system.

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming ubiquitous in domains such as medicine and natural science research. However, when AI systems are implemented in practice, domain experts often refuse them. Low acceptance hinders effective human-AI collaboration, even when it is essential for progress. In natural science research, scientists' ineffective use of AI-enabled systems can impede them from analysing their data and advancing their research. We conducted an ethnographically informed study of 10 in-depth interviews with AI practitioners and natural scientists at the organisation facing low adoption of algorithmic systems. Results were consolidated into recommendations for better AI adoption: i) actively supporting experts during the initial stages of system use, ii) communicating the capabilities of a system in a user-relevant way, and iii) following predefined collaboration rules. We discuss the broader implications of our findings and expand on how our proposed requirements could support practitioners and experts across domains.

Abstract

Recent liquid-crystalline (LC) research is focused on structurally new molecular systems distinct from simple nematic or smectic phases. Sophisticated molecular shape may reveal structural complexity, combining helicity and polarity. Achiral symmetry-breaking in bent-core molecules leads to propensity for synclinic and anticlinic molecular structures within consecutive smectic layers. Moreover, despite their achiral character, dimers readily adopt helical phases. In our study, we investigated a hybrid molecular structure incorporating both characteristics, namely a rigid-bent core and an attached bulky polar group via a flexible spacer. To perform phase identification, we enriched the standard experimental methods with the sophisticated resonant soft x-ray scattering. Notably, we have observed a distinct preference for specific phase types depending on the length of the homologue. Longer homologues exhibit a predisposition towards the formation of tilted smectic phases, characterized by complex sequences of synclinic and anticlinic interfaces. Conversely, shorter homologues manifest a propensity for helical smectic structures. For intermediate homologues, the frustration is alleviated through the formation of several modulated smectic phases. Based on the presented research, we describe the preconditions for high level structures in relation with conflicting constraints.

The geometric Brownian motion (GBM) is widely employed for modeling stochastic processes, yet its solutions are characterized by the log-normal distribution. This comprises predictive capabilities of GBM mainly in terms of forecasting applications. Here, entropy corrections to GBM are proposed to go beyond log-normality restrictions and better account for intricacies of real systems. It is shown that GBM solutions can be effectively refined by arguing that entropy is reduced when deterministic content of considered data increases. Abstract

In this report, we introduce the Gemini 1.5 family of models, representing the next generation of highly compute-efficient multimodal models capable of recalling and reasoning over fine-grained information from millions of tokens of context, including multiple long documents and hours of video and audio. The family includes two new models: (1) an updated Gemini 1.5 Pro, which exceeds the February version on the great majority of capabilities and benchmarks; (2) Gemini 1.5 Flash, a more lightweight variant designed for efficiency with minimal regression in quality. Gemini 1.5 models achieve near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, improve the state-of-the-art in long-document QA, long-video QA and long-context ASR, and match or surpass Gemini 1.0 Ultra's state-of-the-art performance across a broad set of benchmarks. Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens, a generational leap over existing models such as Claude 3.0 (200k) and GPT-4 Turbo (128k). Finally, we highlight real-world use cases, such as Gemini 1.5 collaborating with professionals on completing their tasks achieving 26 to 75% time savings across 10 different job categories, as well as surprising new capabilities of large language models at the frontier; when given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content.

Abstract

Feedback-based control of nano- and micromechanical resonators can enable the study of macroscopic quantum phenomena and also sensitive force measurements. Here, we demonstrate the feedback cooling of a low-loss and high-stress macroscopic SiN membrane resonator close to its quantum ground state. We use the microwave optomechanical platform, where the resonator is coupled to a microwave cavity. The experiment utilizes a Josephson travelling wave parametric amplifier, which is nearly quantum-limited in added noise, and is important to mitigate resonator heating due to system noise in the feedback loop. We reach a thermal phonon number as low as 1.6, which is limited primarily by microwave-induced heating. We also discuss the sideband asymmetry observed when a weak microwave tone for independent readout is applied in addition to other tones used for the cooling. The asymmetry can be qualitatively attributed to the quantum-mechanical imbalance between emission and absorption. However, we find that the observed asymmetry is only partially due to this quantum effect. In specific situations, the asymmetry is fully dominated by a cavity Kerr effect under multitone irradiation.

32. Matrix Completion with Convex Optimization and Column Subset Selection

Abstract

We introduce a two-step method for the matrix recovery problem. Our approach combines the theoretical foundations of the Column Subset Selection and Low-rank Matrix Completion problems. The proposed method, in each step, solves a convex optimization task. We present two algorithms that implement our Columns Selected Matrix Completion (CSMC) method, each dedicated to a different size problem. We performed a formal analysis of the presented method, in which we formulated the necessary assumptions and the probability of finding a correct solution. In the second part of the paper, we present the results of the experimental work. Numerical experiments verified the correctness and performance of the algorithms. To study the influence of the matrix size, rank, and the proportion of missing elements on the quality of the solution and the computation time, we performed experiments on synthetic data. The presented method was applied to two real-life problems problems: prediction of movie rates in a recommendation system and image inpainting. Our thorough analysis shows that CSMC provides solutions of comparable quality to matrix completion algorithms, which are based on convex optimization. However, CSMC offers notable savings in terms of runtime.

Abstract

Training image captioning models using teacher forcing results in very generic samples, whereas more distinctive captions can be very useful in retrieval applications or to produce alternative texts describing images for accessibility. Reinforcement Learning (RL) allows to use cross-modal retrieval similarity score between the generated caption and the input image as reward to guide the training, leading to more distinctive captions. Recent studies show that pre-trained cross-modal retrieval models can be used to provide this reward, completely eliminating the need for reference captions. However, we argue in this paper that Ground Truth (GT) captions can still be useful in this RL framework. We propose a new image captioning model training strategy that makes use of GT captions in different ways. Firstly, they can be used to train a simple MLP discriminator that serves as a regularization to prevent reward hacking and ensures the fluency of generated captions, resulting in a textual GAN setup extended for multimodal inputs. Secondly, they can serve as additional trajectories in the RL strategy, resulting in a teacher forcing loss weighted by the similarity of the GT to the image. This objective acts as an additional learning signal grounded to the distribution of the GT captions. Thirdly, they can serve as strong baselines when added to the pool of captions used to compute the proposed contrastive reward to reduce the variance of gradient estimate. Experiments on MS-COCO demonstrate the interest of the proposed training strategy to produce highly distinctive captions while maintaining high writing quality.

Abstract

Climate change is a prevalent threat, and it is unlikely that current mitigation efforts will be enough to avoid unwanted impacts. One potential option to reduce climate change impacts is the use of stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI). Even if SAI is ultimately deployed, it might be initiated only after some temperature target is exceeded. The consequences of such a delay are assessed herein. This study compares two cases, with the same target global mean temperature of 1.5C above preindustrial, but start dates of 2035 or a delayed start in 2045. We make use of simulations in the Community Earth System Model version 2 with the Whole Atmosphere Coupled Chemistry Model version 6 (CESM2-WACCM6), using SAI under the SSP2-4.5 emissions pathway. We find that delaying the start of deployment (relative to the target temperature) necessitates lower net radiative forcing (-30%) and thus larger sulfur dioxide injection rates (+20%), even after surface temperatures converge, to compensate for the extra energy absorbed by the Earth system. However, many of the surface climate differences between the 2035 and 2045 start simulations appear to be small during the 10-25 years following the delayed SAI start, although longer simulations would be needed to assess any longer-term impacts in this model. In addition, irreversibilities and tipping points that might be triggered during the period of increased warming may not be adequately represented in the model but could change this conclusion in the real world.

Abstract

In this work, we study the cobalt radical interface obtained by depositing a monolayer of a derivative of the Blatter radical on polycrystalline cobalt. By examining the occupied and unoccupied states at the interface, using soft X-ray techniques, and combining them with ab initio calculations, we can completely determine the electronic structure at the interface, simultaneously, on both the molecular and ferromagnetic sides, and thus obtain a full understanding of the magnetic properties at the interface. We find that the molecule is strongly hybridized with the surface. Changes in the core level spectra reflect the modification of the molecule and cobalt electronic structure induced by the bonding across the interface. This causes a decrease in the magnetic moments of the cobalt atoms bonded to the molecules that lose their radical character. Our method allows screening, beforehand, the organic ferromagnetic interfaces in view of potential applications in spintronic.

Abstract

Semiconductor superlattices have found widespread applications in electronic industries. In this work, short-period superlattice structure (SLs) composed of CdO and MgO layers was grown using the plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PA-MBE) technique. The optical property of the SLs was investigated by absorption measurement at room temperature. The ambient-pressure direct bandgap was found to be 2.76 eV. The pressure dependence of fundamental bandgap has been studied using a diamond anvil cell (DAC) technique. It has been found that the band-to-band transition shifts toward higher energy with applied pressure. The bandgap of SLs was varied from 2.76 eV to 2.87 eV with applied pressure varied from 0 to 5.9 GPa. The pressure coefficient for the direct bandgap of SLs was found to be 26 meV/GPa. The obtained experimental result was supported by theoretical results obtained using DFT calculations. The volume deformation potential was estimated using the empirical rule. We believe our findings may provide valuable insight for a better understanding of {CdO/MgO} SLs towards their future applications in optoelectronics., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

We introduce a text-to-speech (TTS) model called BASE TTS, which stands for $\textbf{B}$ig $\textbf{A}$daptive $\textbf{S}$treamable TTS with $\textbf{E}$mergent abilities. BASE TTS is the largest TTS model to-date, trained on 100K hours of public domain speech data, achieving a new state-of-the-art in speech naturalness. It deploys a 1-billion-parameter autoregressive Transformer that converts raw texts into discrete codes ("speechcodes") followed by a convolution-based decoder which converts these speechcodes into waveforms in an incremental, streamable manner. Further, our speechcodes are built using a novel speech tokenization technique that features speaker ID disentanglement and compression with byte-pair encoding. Echoing the widely-reported "emergent abilities" of large language models when trained on increasing volume of data, we show that BASE TTS variants built with 10K+ hours and 500M+ parameters begin to demonstrate natural prosody on textually complex sentences. We design and share a specialized dataset to measure these emergent abilities for text-to-speech. We showcase state-of-the-art naturalness of BASE TTS by evaluating against baselines that include publicly available large-scale text-to-speech systems: YourTTS, Bark and TortoiseTTS. Abstract

This study reviews the literature on virtual academic conferences, which have gained significant attention due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted a scoping review, analyzing 147 documents available up to October 5th, 2021. We categorized this literature, identified main themes, examined theoretical approaches, evaluated empirical findings, and synthesized the advantages and disadvantages of virtual academic conferences. We find that the existing literature on virtual academic conferences is mainly descriptive and lacks a solid theoretical framework for studying the phenomenon. Despite the rapid growth of the literature documenting and discussing virtual conferencing induced by the pandemic, the understanding of the phenomenon is limited. We provide recommendations for future research on academic virtual conferences: their impact on research productivity, quality, and collaboration; relations to social, economic, and geopolitical inequalities in science; and their environmental aspects. Abstract

This study examines the spin-lattice relaxation rate of Mn$^{2+}$ ions in strained diluted magnetic semiconductor (Cd,Mn)Te/(Cd,Mg)Te quantum wells using the optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) technique. By adjusting the magnesium (Mg) content in the buffer layer, we created samples with different strain levels. Our time-resolved ODMR results show that the spin-lattice relaxation time becomes faster as strain increases. We also found that the relaxation rate increases with both magnetic field and temperature, showing a power-law behavior. To understand these observations, we used a theoretical model based on six-level rate equations with non-equal level separations. This model suggests that the main factor affecting relaxation in our samples is a "direct" mechanism. The model's predictions match well with our experimental data. Overall, our findings give insights into spin-lattice relaxation in strained quantum wells and could be important for the development of future quantum and spintronic devices.

42. Interpretation of dielectric spectroscopy measurements of ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals

Abstract

The magnitude of the relative permittivity of the ferroelectric nematic phase (NF) is under a lively scientific discussion since the phase was recently discovered. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements (DSM) give a huge value of relative permittivity, which depends on the cell thickness, but this is argued to result from a misinterpretation of the DSM results. We have conducted DSM using a set of cells differing in thickness of the NF layer, type of electrodes and presence/absence of nanoscale-thick surface layers. To model the DSM results, cells are presented by an equivalent electric circuit that includes a capacitor due to the NF layer with frequency dependent complex relative permittivity, capacitors due to surface layers, and a resistor describing limited conductivity of electrodes. DSM results for different cells with the same liquid crystal in the NF phase, are semi-quantitatively reproduced by the same set of physical parameters if a huge relative permittivity of the NF, which is even orders of magnitude larger than the measured apparent values, is assumed. We show that the capacitance of surface layers should be considered also in cells with no polymer alignment layer on electrodes.

43. Producing Plankton Classifiers that are Robust to Dataset Shift

Abstract

Modern plankton high-throughput monitoring relies on deep learning classifiers for species recognition in water ecosystems. Despite satisfactory nominal performances, a significant challenge arises from Dataset Shift, which causes performances to drop during deployment. In our study, we integrate the ZooLake dataset with manually-annotated images from 10 independent days of deployment, serving as test cells to benchmark Out-Of-Dataset (OOD) performances. Our analysis reveals instances where classifiers, initially performing well in In-Dataset conditions, encounter notable failures in practical scenarios. For example, a MobileNet with a 92% nominal test accuracy shows a 77% OOD accuracy. We systematically investigate conditions leading to OOD performance drops and propose a preemptive assessment method to identify potential pitfalls when classifying new data, and pinpoint features in OOD images that adversely impact classification. We present a three-step pipeline: (i) identifying OOD degradation compared to nominal test performance, (ii) conducting a diagnostic analysis of degradation causes, and (iii) providing solutions. We find that ensembles of BEiT vision transformers, with targeted augmentations addressing OOD robustness, geometric ensembling, and rotation-based test-time augmentation, constitute the most robust model, which we call BEsT model. It achieves an 83% OOD accuracy, with errors concentrated on container classes. Moreover, it exhibits lower sensitivity to dataset shift, and reproduces well the plankton abundances. Our proposed pipeline is applicable to generic plankton classifiers, contingent on the availability of suitable test cells. By identifying critical shortcomings and offering practical procedures to fortify models against dataset shift, our study contributes to the development of more reliable plankton classification technologies.

Abstract

Discrete symmetries play an important role in particle physics with violation of CP connected to the matter-antimatter imbalance in the Universe. We report the most precise test of P, T and CP invariance in decays of ortho-positronium, performed with methodology involving polarization of photons from these decays. Positronium, the simplest bound state of an electron and positron, is of recent interest with discrepancies reported between measured hyperfine energy structure and theory at the level of $10^{-4}$ signaling a need for better understanding of the positronium system at this level. We test discrete symmetries using photon polarizations determined via Compton scattering in the dedicated J-PET tomograph on an event-by-event basis and without the need to control the spin of the positronium with an external magnetic field, in contrast to previous experiments. 46. We Were the Glue: Contributions, Compromises, and Continuing Concerns of School Librarians during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Purpose: This study examined a criterion-based sample of high school librarians who met AASL's definition of effective school library practice to uncover how they translated their professional practices during COVID-19. Methods: Three instruments were used to compare pre-COVID-19 school librarian practice with its evolution during two specific points during the pandemic. High School Librarian Survey 1 (Pre-COVID) (S1) provided a baseline view into the pre-COVID-19 practice of purposively sampled participants; open-ended Survey 2 (S2) and a follow-up focus group (FG) uncovered their practice at two specific points during the crisis and explored how librarians' priorities shifted. Results: The instruments which collected librarian perceptions, revealed that while librarians supported and contributed to their learning communities in essential ways, they were also forced to compromise their priorities. Librarians furthered their leadership roles, supported learning communities, exhibited resilience and integrity, and worked to assure equitable access to learning tools and reading materials. Yet, these efforts went largely unreported. Limited contact with teacher partners and classrooms compromised librarians' engagement with information literacy and inquiry instruction. Implications: Recommendations for future research include exploring how recognized gaps in information literacy learning and instruction may have been recovered since the pandemic and how school librarians' roles may have shifted and been impacted by the pandemic. Under normal operations, memristive devices undergo variability in time and space and have internal dynamics. Interplay of memory and stochastic signal processing in memristive devices makes them candidates for performing bio-inspired tasks of information transduction and transformation, where intrinsic random behavior can be harnessed for high performance of circuits built up of individual memory storing elements. Abstract

This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.

Abstract

In this review, we scrutinize historical and modern results on the linear response of dynamic systems to external perturbations and the celebrated relationship between fluctuations and dissipation expressed by the Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem (FDT). The conceptual derivation of FDT originated from the definition of the equilibrium state and Onsager's regression hypothesis. Over the time the fluctuation-dissipation relation was vividly investigated also for systems away from equilibrium, frequently exhibiting wild fluctuations of measured parameters. In the review, we recall the major formulations of the FDT, such as those proposed by Langevin, Onsager and Kubo. We discuss as well the importance of fluctuations in a wide class of growth phenomena. We point out possible generalizations of the FDT formalism along with a discussion of situations where the relation breaks down and can be not adapted., Comment: This is the first version of the review. Abstract

An accurate differential diagnosis (DDx) is a cornerstone of medical care, often reached through an iterative process of interpretation that combines clinical history, physical examination, investigations and procedures. Interactive interfaces powered by Large Language Models (LLMs) present new opportunities to both assist and automate aspects of this process. In this study, we introduce an LLM optimized for diagnostic reasoning, and evaluate its ability to generate a DDx alone or as an aid to clinicians. 20 clinicians evaluated 302 challenging, real-world medical cases sourced from the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) case reports. Each case report was read by two clinicians, who were randomized to one of two assistive conditions: either assistance from search engines and standard medical resources, or LLM assistance in addition to these tools. All clinicians provided a baseline, unassisted DDx prior to using the respective assistive tools. Our LLM for DDx exhibited standalone performance that exceeded that of unassisted clinicians (top-10 accuracy 59.1% vs 33.6%, [p = 0.04]). Comparing the two assisted study arms, the DDx quality score was higher for clinicians assisted by our LLM (top-10 accuracy 51.7%) compared to clinicians without its assistance (36.1%) (McNemar's Test: 45.7, p < 0.01) and clinicians with search (44.4%) (4.75, p = 0.03). Further, clinicians assisted by our LLM arrived at more comprehensive differential lists than those without its assistance. Our study suggests that our LLM for DDx has potential to improve clinicians' diagnostic reasoning and accuracy in challenging cases, meriting further real-world evaluation for its ability to empower physicians and widen patients' access to specialist-level expertise.
