We have analyzed the long-term evolution and the X-ray outburst light curve of SGR 0501+4516 in the frame of the fallback disc model. We have shown that the X-ray luminosity, period and period derivative of this typical soft gamma repeater can be achieved by a neutron star with a large range of initial disc masses provided that the source has a magnetic dipole field of ~ 1.4 x 10^{12} G on the pole of the star. At present, the star is accreting matter from the disc, which has an age ~ 3 x 10^4 yr, and will remain in the accretion phase until t ~ 2 - 5 x 10^5 yr depending on the initial disc mass. With its current rotational rate, this source is not expected to give pulsed radio emission even if the accretion on to the star is hindered by some mechanism. The X-ray enhancement light curve of SGR 0501+4516 can be accounted for by the same model applied earlier to the X-ray enhancement light curves of other anomalous X-ray pulsars/soft gamma repeaters with the same basic disc parameters. We have further shown that the optical/IR data of SGR 0501+4516 is in good agreement with the emission from an irradiated fallback disc with the properties consistent with our long-term evolution model., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, appeared in MNRAS (Typo corrected in version 2)

The dim isolated neutron stars (XDINs) have periods in the same range as the anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) and the soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs). We apply the fallback disk model, which explains the period clustering and other properties of AXP/SGRs, to the six XDINs with measured periods and period derivatives. Present properties of XDINs are obtained in evolutionary scenarios with surface dipole magnetic fields $B_0 \sim 10^{12}$ G. The XDINs have gone through an accretion epoch with rapid spin-down earlier, and have emerged in their current state, with the X-ray luminosity provided by neutron star cooling and no longer by accretion. Our results indicate that the known XDINs are not likely to be active radio pulsars, as the low $B_0$, together with their long periods place these sources clearly below the "death valley"., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In the fallback disk model for the persistent emission of Anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) and soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs), the hard X-ray emission arises from bulk- and thermal Comptonization of bremsstrahlung photons, which are generated in the accretion column. The relatively low X-ray luminosity of these sources implies a moderate transverse optical depth to electron scattering, with photons executing a small number of shock crossings before escaping sideways. We explore the range of spectral shapes that can be obtained with this model and characterize the most important parameter dependencies. We use a Monte Carlo code to study the crisscrossing of photons in a radiative shock in an accretion column and compute the resulting spectrum. As expected, high-energy power-law X-ray spectra are produced in radiative shocks with photon-number spectral index larger than or about 0.5. We find that the required transverse optical depth is between 1 and 7. Such spectra are observed in low-luminosity X-ray pulsars. We demonstrate here with a simple model that Compton upscattering in the radiative shock in the accretion column can produce hard X-ray spectra similar to those seen in the persistent and transient emission of AXPs and SGRs. In particular, one can obtain a high-energy power-law spectrum, with photon-number spectral index ~ 1 and a cutoff at 100 - 200 keV, with a transverse Thomson optical depth of ~ 5, which is shown to be typical in AXPs/SGRs., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We investigate the X-ray enhancement and the long-term evolution of the recently discovered, second "low-B magnetar" Swift J1822.3-1606 in the frame of the fallback disk model. During a soft gamma burst episode, the inner disk matter is pushed back to larger radii forming a density gradient at the inner disk. Subsequent relaxation of the inner disk could account for the observed X-ray enhancement light curve of Swift J1822.3-1606. We obtain model fits to the X-ray data with basic disk parameters similar to those employed to explain the X-ray outburst light curves of other AXPs and SGRs. The long period (8.4 s) of the neutron star can be reached by the effect of the disk torques in the long-term accretion phase (1-3 x 10^5 yrs). The currently ongoing X-ray enhancement could be due to a transient accretion epoch, or the source could still be in the accretion phase in quiescence. Considering these different possibilities, we determine the model curves that could represent the long-term rotational and the X-ray luminosity evolution of Swift J1822.3-1606, which constrain the strength of the magnetic dipole field to the range of 1-2 x 10^12 G on the surface of the neutron star., Comment: 21 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

The presence of matter with angular momentum, in the form of a fallback disk around a young isolated neutron star will determine its evolution. This leads to an understanding of many properties of different classes of young neutron stars, in particular a natural explanation for the period clustering of AXPs, SGRs and XDINs. The spindown or spinup properties of a neutron star are determined by the dipole component of the magnetic field. The natural possibility that magnetars and other neutron stars may have different strengths of the dipole and higher multipole components of the magnetic field is now actually required by observations on the spindown rates of some magnetars. This talk gives a broad overview and some applications of the fallback disk model to particular neutron stars. Salient points are: (i) A fallback disk has already been observed around the AXP 4U 0142+61 some years ago. (ii) The low observed spindown rate of the SGR 0418+5729 provides direct evidence that the dipole component of the field is in the $10^{12} G$ range. All properties of the SGR 0418+5729 at its present age can be explained by spindown under torques from a fallback disk. (iii) The anomalous braking index of PSR J1734-3333 can also be explained by the fallback disk model which gives the luminosity, period, period derivative and the period second derivative at the present age. Recent measurements showed that the period derivative of the 'high-B' radio pulsar PSR J1734-3333 is increasing with time. For neutron stars evolving with fallback disks, this rotational behavior is expected in certain phases of the long-term evolution. Using the same model as employed earlier to explain the evolution of anomalous X-ray pulsars and soft gamma-ray repeaters, we show that the period, the first and second period derivatives and the X-ray luminosity of this source can simultaneously acquire the observed values for a neutron star evolving with a fallback disk. We find that the required strength of the dipole field that can produce the source properties is in the range of 10^{12} - 10^{13} G on the pole of the neutron star. When the model source reaches the current state properties of PSR J1734-3333, accretion onto the star has not started yet, allowing the source to operate as a regular radio pulsar. Our results imply that PSR J1734-3333 is at an age of ~ 3 x 10^4 - 2 x 10^5 years. Such sources will have properties like the X-ray dim isolated neutron stars or transient AXPs at a later epoch of weak accretion from the diminished fallback disk., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. The period derivative bound for SGR 0418+5729 (Rea et al. 2010) establishes the magnetic dipole moment to be distinctly lower than the magnetar range, placing the source beyond the regime of isolated pulsar activity in the P - dP/dt diagram and giving a characteristic age > 2 \times 10^{7} years, much older than the 10^5 year age range of SGRs and AXPs. So the spindown must be produced by a mechanism other than dipole radiation in vacuum. A fallback disk will spin down a neutron star with surface dipole magnetic field in the 10^{12} G range and initial rotation period P_0 ~ 100 ms to the 9.1 s period of SGR 0418+5729 in a few 10^4 to ~10^5 years. The current upper limit to the period derivative gives a lower limit of \sim 10^5 years to the age that is not sensitive to the neutron star's initial conditions. We show that the period clustering of anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) and soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs), their X-ray luminosities, ages and statistics can be explained with fallback disks with large initial specific angular momentum. The disk evolution models are developed by comparison to self-similar analytical models. The initial disk mass and angular momentum set the viscous timescale. An efficient torque, with (1 - w^2) dependence on the fastness parameter w leads to period clustering in the observed AXP-SGR period range under a wide range of initial conditions. The timescale t_0 for the early evolution of the fallback disk, and the final stages of fallback disk evolution, when the disk becomes passive, are the crucial determinants of the evolution. The disk becomes passive at temperatures around 100 K, which provides a natural cutoff for the X-ray luminosity and defines the end of evolution in the observable AXP and SGR phase. This low value for the minimum temperature for active disk turbulence indicates that the fallback disks are active up to a large radius greater than ~10^{12} cm. We find that transient AXPs and SGRs are likely to be older than their persistent cousins. A fallback disk with mass transfer rates corresponding to the low quiescent X-ray luminosities of the transient sources in early evolutionary phases would have a relatively lower initial mass, such that the mass-flow rate in the disk is not sufficient for the inner disk to penetrate into the light cylinder of the young neutron star, making mass accretion onto the neutron star impossible. The transient AXP phase therefore must start later. The model results imply that the transient AXP/SGRs, although older, are likely to be similar in number to persistent sources (abridged)., Comment: 42 pages, 22 figures. We show that: (i) the long-term X-ray outburst light curve of the transient AXP XTE J1810-197 can be accounted for by a fallback disk that is evolving towards quiescence through a disk instability after having been heated by a soft gamma-ray burst, (ii) the spin-frequency evolution of this source in the same period can also be explained by the disk torque acting on the magnetosphere of the neutron star, (iii) most significantly, recently observed pulsed-radio emission from this source coincides with the epoch of minimum X-ray luminosity. The recent detection of the anomalous X-ray pulsar (AXP) 4U 0142+61 in the mid-infrared with the {\it Spitzer} observatory by Z.Wang and coworkers constitutes the first instance of a disk around an AXP. We show, by analyzing earlier optical and near-IR data together with the recent data, that the overall broadband data set can be reproduced by a single model of an irradiated and viscously heated disk., Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures, minor revisons, appeared in Apj

The long term (~1.5 years) X-ray enhancement and the accompanying infrared enhancement light curves of the anomalous X-ray pulsar 1E 2259+58 following the major bursting epoch can be accounted for by the relaxation of a fall back disk that has been pushed back by a gamma-ray flare. The required burst energy estimated from the results of our model fits is low enough for such a burst to have remained below the detection limits. We find that an irradiated disk model with a low irradiation efficiency is in good agreement with both X-ray and infrared data. Non-irradiated disk models also give a good fit to the X-ray light curve, but are not consistent with the infrared data for the first week of the enhancement., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We show that the observed pulsed optical emission of the anomalous X-ray pulsar 4U 0142+61 can be accounted for by both the magnetar outer gap models and the disk-star dynamo gap models, therefore is not an evidence in favor of one of these models as its responsible mechanism. Nevertheless, the estimated high energy gamma-ray spectra from these models have different power-low indices, and can be tested by future observations of the Gamma-ray Large-Area Space Telescope (GLAST). Furthermore, we show by analytical estimations that the expectations of a standard disk model is in agreement with the observed unpulsed optical and infrared luminosities of the AXP 4U 0142+61., Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in ApJ
