A high-field winding can be fabricated from a cable of non-insulated REBCO tapes, stacked face-face without twisting. If the cable is oriented within each turn of a winding so that the tape face is closely parallel to the magnetic field at its location, the supercurrent capacity of that cable is enhanced ~3x greater than in a transverse or twisting orientation. This concept for a conformal winding was presented in a previous paper pertinent to the body winding of a high-field dipole. The performance and cost of Bi-2212/Ag wire is limited by the large fraction of silver matrix (~3:1) that is required in the oxide-powder-in-tube fabrication process. An alternative fabrication process is being developed in which fine-powder Bi-2212 is uni-axially compressed to form bars with a thin Ag foil sheath. The fine powder naturally textures (aligns the a-b planes perpendicular to the direction of compaction) with texture >80% using 200 MPa compression. A billet is formed by stacking trapezoidal-cross-section bars in a symmetric 8-12-16 pattern around a Ag rod and enclosing in a Ag-wall extrusion can. The billet is extruded and drawn to fine wire. Results are presented on present status of the development and testing.

Discusses the application of training in social problem solving with family caregivers of persons who have incurred severe physical disabilities. Outlines training procedures (i.e., Project FOCUS) that enable counselors to assist family caregivers in developing effective problem-solving skills that may translate to increased wellness for each caregiver, and by extension, their care recipients. Tested hypothesis that higher levels of positive affect and lower levels of negative affect would predict depression during pregnancy and in the postpartum period. Analysis of 100 women indicated that women at risk for depression during pregnancy and in the postpartum period may exhibit heightened negative moods and a dearth of positive affective experiences. In a series of studies, a positive problem orientation was prospectively associated with greater positive effects on problem-solving ability under a variety of conditions. However, the relation of the problem orientation variables to distress appeared to be mediated by trait affectivity. Results are interpreted in light of the social problem-solving model. (JPS)

Multiple regression analysis of data from 127 public school teachers and 126 journalists indicated that negative affect did not completely explain the relationship of cognitive appraisal of stress and degree of distress. Both cognitive processes and trait negative affectivity contributed to the negative emotional reactions to occupational stress. (SK)

Describes investigation examining relationship of problem-solving appraisal to health complaints and health-related expectancies among undergraduates. Suggests that self-appraised effective problem solvers reported fewer physical symptoms and fewer health problems and had greater internal and lower chance expectancies for health outcomes than ineffective problem solvers. Examined frequently occurring hassles among college students (n=366) at rural university, suburban community college, and urban university. Identified several stressful hassles that were common across settings. Most frequently reported hassle (troublesome thoughts about future) was common among both males and females. Men reported more problems with personal finances; women reported difficulties with meeting time demands. (NB)
