We report the results of simultaneous observations of the Vela pulsar in X-rays and radio from the RXTE satellite and the Mount Pleasant Radio Observatory in Tasmania. We sought correlations between the Vela's X-ray and radio flux densities and radio arrival times on a pulse by pulse basis. We found significantly higher flux density in Vela's main X-ray peak during radio pulses that arrived early. This excess flux shifts to the 'trough' following the 2nd X-ray peak during radio pulses that arrive later. We suggest that the mechanism producing the radio pulses is intimately connected to the mechanism producing X-rays. Current models using resonant absorption in the outer magnetosphere as a cause of the radio emission, and less directly of the X-ray emission, are explored as a possible explanation for the correlation., Comment: Proceedings of the 363. Martian soil composition can illuminate past and ongoing near-surface processes such as impact gardening [2] and hydrothermal and volcanic activity [3,4]. Though the Mars Exploration Rovers (MER) have analyzed the major-element composition of Martian soils, no soil samples have been returned to Earth for detailed chemical analysis. Rao et al. [1] suggested that Martian meteorite EETA79001 contains melted Martian soil in its impact glass (Lithology C) based on sulfur enrichment of Lithology C relative to the meteorite s basaltic lithologies (A and B) [1,2]. If true, it may be possible to extract detailed soil chemical analyses using this meteoritic sample. We conducted high-resolution (~0.3 m/pixel) element mapping of Lithology C in thin section EETA79001,18 by energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). We use these data for principal component analysis (PCA).

Antarctic meteorite EETA79001 has received substantial attention for possibly containing a component of Martian soil in its impact glass (Lithology C) [1]. The composition of Martian soil can illuminate near-surface processes such as impact gardening [2] and hydrothermal and volcanic activity [3,4]. Impact melts in meteorites represent our most direct samples of Martian regolith. We present the initial findings from a high-resolution electron microprobe study of Lithology C from Martian meteorite EETA79001. As this study develops we aim to extract details of a potential soil composition and to examine Martian surface processes using elemental ratios and correlations.

This paper presents measurements in a Mach 3 turbulent boundary layer which was subjected to a short region of concave surface curvature. Mean velocity and time-averaged turbulence measurements are presented to indicate the severity of the distortion, although the focus of this study is on how the large-scale organized motions are affected by the distortion. A 12 deg increase in the inclination angle of organized motions is observed, and correlation measurements indicate an increase in the streamwise length scale. VITA conditional sampling is used to identify strong positive streamwise mass-flux gradients as the large-scale structure responsible for the measured structure angle and to determine the ensemble-averaged flowfield associated with the mass-flux gradient structures.

An experimental investigation concentrating on the change in the large-scale organized motions of a supersonic turbulent boundary layer subjected to a short region of concave surface curvature is presented. Two flows were studied, a relatively weak and a relatively strong perturbation. In both flows the freestream Mach number was 2.89 and the Reynolds number based on momentum thickness was 81,900. Hot-wire anemometry and schlieren photography provided the principle tools for this investigation. Hot-wire data were analyzed using spectral and correlation methods and conditional sampling techniques. Changes in structure angle and results of conditionally sampled velocity signals are discussed. The strong perturbation is found to increase the structure angle, and in both flows the length scales of the organized motions are altered.

The calibration and operation of a constant-temperature crossed-wire probe in supersonic flow is considered. Crossed-wire probes offer considerable advantages over single, inclined wires: the kinematic shear stress can be derived from a single point measurement; the rms quantities can be derived from the same measurement, and the instantaneous quantities can be obtained as a continuous function of time. However, using a crossed-wire probe in supersonic flow is subject to the following practical difficulties: the problem of flow interference, where the shock waves from one wire and its supports interfere with the flow over the other wire; the necessity for high frequency response to resolve the spectral content, and the sensitivity of the results to small changes in the calibration constants. In the present contribution, each of these problems is addressed. Practical solutions are suggested, and some encouraging results are presented.

This paper presents and discusses experimental data from an investigation of organized motions in a supersonic turbulent boundary layer. Conditional sampling of crossed-wire and multiple normal-wire signals is performed. A comparison is made between events detected using the VITA conditional sampling technique and those found by thresholding the UV signal. Based on this comparison, limitations of the VITA technique are discussed. The conditional sampling results indicate that most organized motions are consistent with hairpin vortices.

Intermediate goal of this investigation to correlate nature and concentration of lattice defects with physicochemical conditions of preparation; namely, temperature, partial pressures of constituent elements and/or dopant concentration. Result of this investigation: possible to predict and control nature and concentration of defects as function of preparation conditions.

Hall effect measurements were carried out on undoped Hg0.6Cd0.4Te crystals quenched to room temperature subsequent to equilibration at temperatures varying from 450 to 720 C under various partial pressures of Hg. The variation of the hole concentration as a function of the partial pressure of Hg indicates that the native acceptor defects are doubly ionized. Native donor defects are found to be negligible in concentration and the p-type to n-type conversion is shown to be due to residual donors and not due to native donor defects. Thermodynamic constant for the incorporation of the doubly ionized native acceptor defect has been established.

Iodine doped single crystal samples of mercury cadmium telluride were annealed at temperatures varying from 450 C to 600 C in Hg vapor and quenched to room temperature. Hall effect measurements at 77 K on the crystals cooled to room temperature indicate the samples to be n-type after anneals at high Hg pressures whereas they turn p-type after anneals at low Hg pressures; the electron concentration increases with increase in Hg pressure. The results are explained on the basis that the crystals are saturated with (Hg,Cd)I2, with a fraction of the iodine being present as donor occupying tellurium lattice sites and a fraction being present as acceptors resulting from the iodine on tellurium lattice sites pairing with the doubly ionized native acceptor defects. The solubility of the donor species increases with increase in Hg pressure, whereas that of the acceptor species increases with decrease in Hg pressure. Equilibrium constants for the incorporation of the iodine species as well as the pairing reaction were established.

The permeabilities of protium, deuterium, and tritium in foil specimens of Marz grade iron, 4130 steel, Armco iron, HP-9-4-20, and T-1 steels were studied at hydrogen pressures between 0.02 and 0.5 MPa over the temperature range 260-700 K. The permeability was measured by a pressure-rise method, deuterium counting with a detector, and radioactivity counting. Good agreement is found between the measurement techniques used. It is shown that the permeabilities of protium, deuterium, and tritium in iron and T-1 steel at temperatures as low as 260 K are in good agreement with the equation proposed by Gonzalez (1967). However, the permeabilities of HP-9-4-20 and 4130 steel to hydrogen are typically lower than predicted. The isotope effect on hydrogen permeability of HP-9-4-20, 4130 and T-1 steels, and high-purity iron can be estimated by an inverse square root of mass correction.

An analysis of hydrogen transport in pure polycrystalline nickel foils and rods at 300-550 K shows that both trapping and short-circuit diffusion are present and have small yet significant effects on permeation, evolution, and absorption. Both effects appear to be associated primarily with the dislocation substructure of nickel. Relations describing hydrogen transport in nickel are obtained using the data on deuterium permeation, tritium absorption, and outgassing in pure polycrystalline nickel together with earlier measurements of diffusivity and solubility of hydrogen isotopes.

Measurements of the absorption of CO2 laser radiation in the 9.4 micron band by pressure broadened water vapor samples are summarized. The water vapor temperatures used were 25, 30, and 35 C.

Method for physical recovery of carbon dioxide from space cabin atmosphere and chemical recovery of metabolic oxygen

In the application of Monte Carlo computer techniques to the study of problems in the free molecular flow regime, the analogy between radiation heat transfer with diffuse emissions and the free molecular flow field makes it possible to use the radiation configuration factors as a test on the operation of the Monte Carlo program. A source plane which was an annular ring of arbitrary radius around a sphere with the center of the disk coincident with the center of the sphere was examined. Since various indicators seemed to verify the correct operation of the program, the program was used to calculate the radiation configuration factors. The study adds a new geometry to the general literature on radiation configuration factors.
