In a Symbiotic Cognitive Relaying (SCR) scenario, the Secondary users(SU) nodes can act as multihop relays to assist the communication between Primary User(PU) nodes in the case of a weak direct link. In return, the SU nodes are incentivised with the right to carry out SU-SU communication using licensed PU band for a fixed amount of time, referred to as the 'Time Incentive'. Existing work on SCR is constrained to a fixed ad-hoc SU network. In this paper, we introduce mobility in SCR by considering mobile SU nodes while keeping the PU nodes fixed. This paper uses a specific mobility pattern and routing strategy for the SU nodes to propose theoretical bounds on the throughput and delay of PU-PU transmission. We derive analytically the least throughput and maximum delay possible in our model., Comment: Ongoing work, will be updated when finished

In this paper, we consider a model in which the unlicensed or the Secondary User (SU) equipped with a Cognitive Radio (CR) (together referred to as CR) interweaves its transmission with that of the licensed or the Primary User (PU). In this model, when the CR detects the PU to be (i) busy it does not transmit and; (ii) PU to be idle it transmits. Two situations based on CR's detection of PU are considered, where the CR detects PU (i) perfectly - referred to as the "ideal case" and; (ii) imperfectly - referred to as "non ideal case". For both the cases we bring out the rate region, sum capacity of PU and CR and spectral efficiency factor - the ratio of sum capacity of PU and CR to the capacity of PU without CR. We consider the Rayleigh fading channel to provide insight to our results. For the ideal case we study the effect of PU occupancy on spectral efficiency factor. For the non ideal case, in addition to the effect of occupancy, we study the effect of false alarm and missed detection on the rate region and spectral efficiency factor. We characterize the set of values of false alarm and missed detection probabilities for which the system benefits, in the form of admissible regions. We show that false alarm has a more profound effect on the spectral efficiency factor than missed detection. We also show that when PU occupancy is small, the effects of both false alarm and missed detection decrease. Finally, for the standard detection techniques viz. energy detection, matched filter and magnitude squared coherence, we show that that the matched filter performs best followed by magnitude squared coherence followed by energy detection with respect to spectral efficiency factor.

Results of an evaluation of silicon P-Intrinsic-N (PIN) photodiodes and Avalanche Photodiodes (APD) for the direct detection of soft x rays from 1 to 20 keV and for the detection of scintillation light output from CsI(TI) for higher x ray energies (30 to 1000 keV) are presented. About one keV resolution was achieved at room temperature for both the PIN and APD detectors for soft x rays (1 to 20 keV). Commercially available, low power (18 mV), low noise, hybrid preamplifiers, were used. These photodiodes were also coupled to CsI(TI) scintillator and obtained about 6 resolution at 662 keV. The photodiode frequency response matches well with the emission spectrum of the CsI(TI) scintillator providing good spectral resolution and a higher signal than NaI(TI) when viewed by conventional photomultipliers. A PIN-CsI(TI) combination provides a low energy threshold of around 60 keV while for the APD-CsI(TI) it is 15 keV.

Many observers and theorists have suggested that gamma-ray bursters (GRBs) are related to highly magnetized rotating, neutron stars, in which case an analogy with pulsars implies that GRBs would be prodigious emitters of polarized radio emission during quiescence. The paper reports on a survey conducted with the Very Large Array radio telescope of 10 small GRB error regions for quiescent radio emission at wavelengths of 2, 6, and 20 cm. The sensitivity of the survey varied from 0.1 to 0.8 mJy. The observations did indeed reveal four radio sources inside the GRB error regions.

In the areas of high spatial resolution, the evaluation of a hard X-ray detector with 65 micron spatial resolution for operation in the energy range from 30 to 400 keV is proposed. The basic detector is a thick large-area scintillator faceplate, composed of a matrix of high-density scintillating glass fibers, attached to a proximity type image intensifier tube with a resistive-anode digital readout system. Such a detector, combined with a coded-aperture mask, would be ideal for use as a modest-sized hard X-ray imaging instrument up to X-ray energies as high as several hundred keV. As an integral part of this study it was also proposed that several techniques be critically evaluated for X-ray image coding which could be used with this detector. In the area of high spectral resolution, it is proposed to evaluate two different types of detectors for use as X-ray spectrometers for solar flares: planar silicon detectors and high-purity germanium detectors (HPGe). Instruments utilizing these high-spatial-resolution detectors for hard X-ray imaging measurements from 30 to 400 keV and high-spectral-resolution detectors for measurements over a similar energy range would be ideally suited for making crucial solar flare observations during the upcoming maximum in the solar cycle.

A time history and Fourier power spectrum are presented for the August 5, 1984 gamma-ray burst (GRB) observed with the SMM Hard X-ray Burst Spectrometer and the Pioneer Venus Orbiter spacecraft. A significant complex feature of the event is identifiable in both data sets: a gradual ripple with a well-defined 2.2-sec period lasting for seven cycles, with a series of narrow spikes, which appear always on the ascending phase of the sinusoidal ripple. This event is unusual in both its temporal and spectral attributes: it exhibits coexistence of periodic and nonperiodic features, and it was also reported as the most intense GRB event observed with the SMM Gamma-Ray Spectrometer, extending up to 100 MeV.

Only one case is known where a gamma-ray burst (GRB) light curve indisputably exhibits a periodic behavior. However, a number of GRB light curves have claims for periodicity of varying degrees of plausibility. A vital part of each claim is some mathematical calculation of the significance of the period when compared to some appropriate hypothesis where no modulation is present. For the period search techniques of Fourier transforms, periodograms, and model fitting, well known statistical procedures allow the significance to be evaluated. However, a fourth period search technique, so called 'pattern recognition', does not have any published means of estimating confidence levels. Here, a series of Monte Carlo calculations is presented which will allow evaluation of a period's significance. These results are then applied to periods proposed for 16 bursts.

Six bursts from the soft gamma-ray repeater (SGR) 1806-20 have been recorded with the SMM Hard X-ray Burst Spectrometer during a highly active phase in 1983. Rise and decay times of less than 5 ns have been detected. Time profiles of these events indicate low-level emission prior to and after the main peaks. The results suggest that SGRs are distinguished from classical gamma-ray bursts by repetition, softer nonvarying spectra, short durations, simple temporal profiles, and a tendency for source locations to correlate with Population I objects. SGR characteristics differ from those of type I X-ray bursts, but they appear to have similarities with the type II bursts from the Rapid Burster.

A catalog of 84 gamma-ray bursts which occurred between September 14, 1978 and February 13, 1980 is presented. The data presented consist of earth crossing times, given to about the nearest second, and time histories, in the tens of keV to MeV range, for all 84 events, as well as localizations for 80 of the events. The localizations, derived from arrival-time analysis, are given as single error boxes, double error boxes, or annuli of location, and, where possible, have been compared to the Konus localizations. They range in size from less than a square arcminute to over 1000 square degrees. The fluences of the bursts cataloged are in the range 3 x 10 to the -7th ergs/sq cm and above.

Preliminary results of an examination of the Ondrejov and Sonneberg plate collections for possible optical counterparts to gamma-ray bursters are presented. The investigation proceeds in three different directions: (1) time-correlated searches for gamma-ray bursts (GRB) with known positions, (2) time-correlated searches for GRB without know positions, and (3) archival searches. 3 GRB with known positions and 28 GRB without known positions were studied in this way; archival searches representing a total exposure of 2.75 yr were done for 10 GRB positions, with limiting magnitudes for a 1 s flash between 3 and 8. No evidence for true optical images associated with GRB was found. Some statistical conclusions are drawn and the results obtained are discussed.

The discovery of an IR counterpart to a gamma-ray burster (GRB) would be a big step forward in understanding this enigmatic phenomenon. A program of searching for IR emission from the smallest GRB source regions has been initiated. Seven boxes have been searched with ground-based telescopes at a wavelength of 2.2 microns and 23 with the IRAS data base at wavelengths of 12, 25, 60, and 100 microns. No convincing candidates were identified. The most constraining result are for two error boxes where the K-band magnitude are found to be fainter than 19.03. This observation is compared with the flux predicted from either a companion star or an accretion disk. The new IR observations pose serious difficulties for several GRB models.

The Hard X-Ray Burst Spectrometer (HXRBS) and Gamma-Ray Spectrometer (GRS) data from the Solar Maximum Mission satellite have been searched for gamma-ray bursts with sufficient intensities and relatively simple time profiles such that their spectral behavior may be studied on a time scale of about 1 s. Ten such events were observed with the GRS experiment, and four of these were also detected within the HXRBS field of view. Details are presented for two moderately intense bursts with relatively simple structure. The spectral evolutions of the remaining events are summarized briefly. Results suggest a pattern in the spectral evolution within burst pulses: a tendency for the high-energy emission to lead the low-energy emission, in contrast to the correlation of intensity and spectral hardness reported by Golenetskii et al. (1983).

Six Einstein observations of five gamma-ray burst sources are presented and discussed. With one possible exception, no point source was detected in any of the observations. The data are interpreted in the framework of neutron star models for gamma bursters. Upper limits are derived for the surface temperatures of the neutron stars assumed to be responsible for the bursts. It is shown that the lack of soft X-ray emission may impose stringent constraints on accretion rates onto neutron stars.

The results of a search for the soft and short Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) in the data of the Hard X-Ray Burst Spectrometer (HXRBS) on the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) are presented. Data for four events are presented, including their time profiles and spectral characteristics. In one case the instrument time resolution reveals a total burst duration of 55 ms with rise and decay times of less than about 5 ms.

The Hard X-ray Burst Spectrometer (HXRBS) and the Gamma-Ray Spectrometer (GRS) on NASA's Solar Maximum Mission satellite have independently monitored cosmic gamma-ray bursts since launch in February 1980. Several bursts with relatively simple pulse structure and sufficient intensity have been analyzed for evidence of spectral variability on time scales shorter than the pulse durations. In many of these bursts pulse structures are found, ranging in duration from 1 to 10 seconds, which exhibit a trend of hard-to-soft spectral evolution. No significant evidence for soft-to-hard evolution has been found. The HXRBS data above 100 keV and the GRS data above 1 MeV indicate that the spectral evolution generally is not due to time-varying absorption features at energies below 100 keV.

The results of searches of about 1500 h of archival astronomical plates, taken with a variety of instruments at two observatories are reported. The areas of the sky photographed coincided with the positions of ten recently observed gamma ray bursts. The limiting magnitudes of the plates would in most cases have allowed the detection of the type of optical transients recently observed to be associated with gamma-bursters, although no such transients were found. A simple statistical argument is presented which allows confidence limits to be set for the repetition rates of bursters using these or other archival data.

The precise source regions of three moderately intense gamma ray bursts are derived. These events were observed with the first interplanetary burst sensor network. The optimum locations of the detectors, widely separated throughout the inner solar system, allowed for high accuracy, over-determined source fields of size 0.7 to 7.0 arc-min(2). All three locations are at fairly high galactic latitude in regions of low source confusion; none can be identified with a steady source object. Archived photographs were searched for optical transients that are able to be associated with these source fields; one such association was made.

The time history, energy spectra, and precise localization of the intense January 13, 1979 gamma-ray burst, observed by five spacecraft in the interplanetary network, are presented. The time history displays a pulse-afterpulse structure suggestive of periodicity. Fine time resolution spectral analysis shows that a wide variety of models can be used to fit individual spectra, while spectra integrated over longer periods are well fitted by a thermal synchrotron law, making it difficult to identify any specific emission mechanism. The precise localization may be consistent with an archival optical transient having no quiescent counterpart down to 22d mag on recent plates.

Two images on archival photographic plates which are most likely records of optical flashes from gamma-ray bursters (GRBs) were examined. One of these images appears on a 1901 plate in the field of the Nov. 5, 1979 GRB, while the other is in the field of the Jan. 13, 1979 GRB on a plate exposed in 1944. The 1901 optical transient image is circular in shape, while all normal star images are trailed by 8 in. No optical transients are found in a control region which is 34.3 times larger than the GRB error regions examined. Independent limits on the optical flash rate from the sky yield a probability of less than 0.0001 that any one of the optical transients is due to a background flash. A total exposure of 2.7 years was examined for GRB flashes at known GRB locations on the Harvard plates and a total of three GRB flashes were seen, that the average recurrence time scale for optical flashes is roughly one year. The optical fluence of these optical flashes was measured. For the three currently known GRB optical flashes, the ratio of gamma-ray fluence (from a modern burst) to the optical fluence (from a archival burst) were measured to be 800, 900, and 900.

A duration histogram for 24 gamma-ray burst events detected by an ISEE-3 experiment is presented which suggests the existence of two gamma-ray burst populations. A distribution is also shown of 123 Venera 13 and 14 events which suggests two such populations in each experimental sample, the domains separated with a minimum near 1 or 2 sec. It is pointed out that the results of the Goddard ISEE-3 gamma-ray burst spectrometer actually enhance the appearance of two burst populations suggested in the Venera data.

Evidence from the Vela satellites that very brief, approximately 0.1 s, gamma-ray bursts constitute a class distinct from the longer, highly structured bursts has been strengthened by the results of the Venera 11 and 12 KKONUS experiments. The Goodard ISEE-3 gamma-ray burst spectrometer, utilizing a trigger criterion which is more likely to be independent of duration than previous experiments, detected a sample of events which enhances this bimodal distribution. The ISEE-3 result is corroborated by an increase in the frequency of detection of short bursts in the KONUS 13/14 database over KONUS 11/12, an effect attributable to the use of a shorter trigger integration time in the later experiments. Considerations such as repeating bursters complicate a simple dichotomous classification of gamma-ray bursts.

Data on the impulsive phase of the 1979 March 5 gamma ray burst, taken by three identical detectors aboard the Prognoz 7, Venera 11, and Venera 12 spacecraft with 2 ms time resolution, are presented. The first 200 ms of the time history may be described by an exponential decay with time constant of approximately 120 ms up to approximately 100 ms, and time constant of approximately 30 ms thereafter; at low energies, a pulsating component with a period of approximately 23 ms appears. The data could be consistent with torsional vibrations of a neutron star, the rotation of a rapidly spinning neutron star, or oscillations caused by interactions between hot plasma and a magnetic field.

Two short duration single spike solar events of 1978 May 5 and December 4 exhibit similar time profiles in the microwave and hard X-ray ranges, indicating emission from compact sources. Microwave spectral observations exhibit inhomogeneities present in the source parameters. The existence of fine time structures in the microwave time profiles at 10.4 GHz from Berne are interpreted as a signature of the dynamics of a disturbance traveling through the source at the ion-sound speed. Stereoscopic observations with the hard X-ray detector on the solar orbiter, Helios-2, and the Berne microwave antenna do not indicate any time lag or differences in the time profiles during the impulsive phase. This is taken as evidence for the absence of directionality of emission making beam models unlikely for short duration single spike events. Previously announced in STAR as N83-13047

The gamma-ray bursts of April 19 and 21, 1980, and March 1, 1981, are characterized on the basis of observations obtained at 25-500 keV and time resolution 128 msec using the hard-X-ray-burst spectrometer of the SMM satellite. The data are presented graphically, and the parameters determined by fitting three theoretical models to the data for each phase (rising phase, decay phase, and valleys between pulses) are given in tables. Models used are thin thermal bremsstrahlung with or without absorption lines, thermal synchrotron with or without absorption lines, and power law with exponential cutoff.

The error box of the unusual gamma-ray burst of Mar. 5, 1979 falls completely inside the optical and radio image of the supernova remnant N49 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This region was observed twice in X-rays with the High-Resolution Imager of the Einstein Observatory, six weeks and nearly two years after the gamma-ray burst. A comparison between the two observations is shown.

A quiescent X-ray source detected with the Einstein X-ray Observatory in a location consistent with that of an intense gamma ray burst is shown to be also consistent with the location of the 1928 optical transient, the likely optical counterpart of the gamma ray burst source GBS0117-29. The system appears to be underluminous in X-rays by a factor of 10; possible reasons for this are discussed. The observed X-ray flux would require an accretion rate of about 10 to the -14th (d/1 kpc/)-squared solar masses per year, which is probably too low to be consistent with published nuclear flash models for gamma bursts, unless the distance is substantially greater than about 1 kpc or the burst recurrence time is greater than about 50 yrs, or the accretion rate is highly variable. Such a long recurrence time appears to be inconsistent with the detection of the optical burst.

Results for three burst locations observed with the imaging proportional counter of the Einstein Observatory are given. The observations are used to determine temperature and accretion constraints for the burst source.

A catalog of 111 confirmed gamma-ray bursts detected between 1967 July and 1979 June is presented. Both localization information and earth crossing times for the gamma-ray wave fronts are given. Data which have appeared in some previous catalogs have been revised; many previously unpublished events detected by an international network of dedicated deep space and near-earth experiments since 1976 are also presented.

Bursts of X-rays coincident in time with two gamma-ray burst events were observed by the 3-12 keV collimated X-ray detectors on the Vela spacecraft. Both of these observations show recurrence on a time scale of hundreds of seconds. For one of these events (GB 720514) the X-ray detection gives an improved position as well as information on the spectrum late in the outburst. The other event (GB 740723) is of special interest because the source, not previously located, is consistent in direction with the binary pulsar SMC X-1 in the Small Magellanic Cloud; this is the first moderately small error box for a gamma-ray burst to contain a strong X-ray source.

The photon number spectrum integrated over the impulsive part of the event is shown to fit a thermal bremsstrahlung function with a temperature of 330 + or - 70 keV at energies between 151 and 487 keV. At lower energies, the data points lie considerably below this function, indicating a broad absorption feature extending down to values less than or equal to 28 keV, the lowest energy measured. The upper energy of this absorption feature varies from 100 to 150 keV on a time scale less than or equal to 0.5 s. This event is interpreted as a typical gamma ray burst, even though it is still considered remotely possible that it is of solar origin. The spectral features, together with their variability, are interpreted in terms of electron interactions at the cyclotron resonance frequency in magnetic fields of 10 to the 12th - 10 to the 13th gauss close to the surface of a neutron star.

It is pointed out that several years after the discovery of cosmic gamma ray bursts (GRB) their sources have not yet been identified, although searches have been conducted in optical, X-ray, and radio wavelengths. The three smallest error boxes are now related to the events of Mar. 5, 1979, Apr. 6, 1979, and Nov. 19, 1978. X-ray observations, with the Imaging Proportional Counter (IPC) of the Einstein Observatory, were made for all three locations. A description is presented of the results of the 8200 second IPC observation of the Nov. 19, 1978 GRB, made on July 1 and 2, 1980. Three sources were detected. However, two of them were outside the GRB error box. The third source is located well inside the burst error box.

Refinements in the source direction analysis of the observations of the unusual gamma ray transient are presented. The final results from the interplanetary gamma ray burst network produce a 0.1 arc sq. min. error box. It is nested inside the initially determined 2 arc sq min. source region. This smaller source location is within both the optical and X-ray contours of N49 although not positioned at either contour center.

The celestial source location of the November 19, 1978, intense gamma ray burst has been determined from data obtained with the interplanetary gamma-ray sensor network by means of long-baseline wave front timing instruments. Each of the instruments was designed for studying events with observable spectra of approximately greater than 100 keV, and each provides accurate event profile timing in the several millisecond range. The data analysis includes the following: the triangulated region is centered at (gamma, delta) 1950 = (1h16m32s, -28 deg 53 arcmin), at -84 deg galactic latitude, where the star density is very low and the obscuration negligible. The gamma-ray burst source region, consistent with that of a highly polarized radio source described by Hjellming and Ewald (1981), may assist in the source modeling and may facilitate the understanding of the source process. A marginally identifiable X-ray source was also found by an Einstein Observatory investigation. It is concluded that the burst contains redshifted positron annihilation and nuclear first-excited iron lines, which is consistent with a neutron star origin.

Time histories of gamma-ray bursts have revealed a great diversity, both in total duration and in the details of fine time structure. Results of the gamma-ray experiment on the Helios-2 spacecraft have suggested some similarities in time profiles of events. The possibility of some characteristic 'separation times' in events may also be indicated.

The Goddard program of gamma-ray burst studies is briefly reviewed. The past results, present status and future expectations are outlined regarding our endeavors using experiments on balloons. IMP-6 and IMP-7, OGO-3, ISEE-1 and ISEE-3, Helios-2, Solar Maximum Mission, the Einstein Observatory, Solar Polar and the Gamma Ray Observatory, and with the interplanetary gamma-ray burst networks, to which some of these spacecraft sensors contribute. Additional emphasis is given to the recent discovery of a new type of gamma-ray transient, detected on 5 March, 1979.

The Nov. 19, 1978 gamma-ray burst (GRB) has a very well determined error box, 10 square arcmin (Cline et al., 1981). An 8000-sec IPC exposure with the Einstein Observatory detected, at a 3.4-sigma level, one low intensity (less than 3 x 10 to the -13th erg/sq cm per sec) X-ray source inside the error box. The probability of a serendipitous detection was 0.01. Inside the X-ray source error box there are two weak radio sources, one of them highly polarized (Hjellming and Ewald, 1981), and two 20-magnitude objects, not coincident with the radio sources visible in the ESO/SRC J and R plates. With the exception of N49, this is the first possible detection of X-ray emission inside a GRB box. Its low intensity justifies, in fact, the lack of detection for other events.

Spectral observations of nine recent cosmic gamma-ray bursts are reported. The average photon number spectra of all nine events are each consistent with a 150-keV exponential from 100 keV to about 400 keV, and a power law of index -2.5 from 400 keV to 1100 keV. The observations also indicate an event rate of 16 in 1972 and 1973, or 8 plus or minus 2 per year, higher than the 5 plus or minus 1 per year initially reported. This corresponds to an approximately 40 percent lower effective intensity threshold, attained by using more sensitive detectors in multiple-satellite coincidence.

Spectral observations on nine of the eleven known cosmic gamma ray bursts detected from IMP-7 from late 1972 through 1973 are reported. All nine events were found to have average spectra ranging from 100 to 1100 keV. The hypothesis of a single greater than 100 keV average event spectrum for all gamma ray bursts (inferred from IMP-6 observations) was investigated. In addition to the mutual consistency of these 14 IMP events, all independently reported average event spectra fit the IMP-7 common spectrum. This observed lack of variability of the average event spectrum suggests that the production mechanism is tied to more rigidly fixed source parameters than most celestial or solar hard X-ray phenomena. Other characteristics of gamma ray bursts events, are discussed: a high-energy spectral tail with power-law index -2.5, a rising size spectrum from the earlier event rate, and a hint of clustering of event occurrence in time.

Spectral observation of nine recent cosmic gamma-ray bursts are reported. The average photon number spectra of all nine events are shown to be consistent with a 150-keV exponential from 100 keV to about 400 keV, and a power law of index -2.5 from 400 keV to 1100 keV. The observations also indicate an event rate of 16 in 1972 and 1973, or 8 + or - 2 per year, higher than the 5 + or - 1 per year initially reported. This corresponds to an approximately 40-percent lower effective intensity threshold, attained by using more sensitive detectors in multiple-satellite coincidence.

Progress in two experimental programs is reported. One program involves the search through satellite data for existing evidence for fast photon intensity bursts with energies exceeding 80 keV. The second program is concerned with the development of very sensitive instrumentation to make possible studies of X-ray and gamma ray bursts in the region from 0.1 to 15 MeV with angular resolution, energy resolution, and time resolution, taking into account the complete dynamic range from several nanoseconds to several hours.

The occurrence of intense bursts of 0.1- to 1.5-MeV photons from space has been confirmed with observations from IMP-6. This is the first positive result of an extensive data comparison, in which a search was made of OGO and IMP records for time coincidences between brief X- or gamma-ray increases and a variety of other transient phenomena. The IMP-6 measurements provided the first differential energy spectra of these events, the shapes of which indicate that photons predominantly in the gamma-ray domain are released into space. Whether these bursts originate in distant supernovae or in some new class of relatively nearby gamma-ray flare stars, they reveal a process which is new to high-energy astrophysics, not only because of the unusual spectrum, but also because of the brief time scales involved and because of the intense fluxes observed.

An unusual transient pulse of greater than approximately 50 keV photons was detected on March 5, 1979 by the gamma-ray burst sensor network using nine space probes and satellites. Its characteristics are unlike those of the known variety of gamma-ray bursts and therefore suggest that it was formed either by a completely different origin species or in a very different manner. In a companion Letter it is identified with the LMC supernova remnant N49.

The paper discusses the gamma event of Mar. 5, 1979, the most intense burst of nonsolar high-energy photons ever recorded, which was observed by 12 gamma burst instruments on nine spacecraft. The fast rise time of the event and ephemeris and absolute time information from the spacecraft are considered, and a unique and redundantly determined 1 x 2 arcmin error box centered at R.A. = 5h 25.95m, decl. = -66 deg 07.1 arcmin (equinox 1950.0) is found. Statistical arguments favor identification with the SNR N49, located within the box. It is suggested that if N49 was the source of the transient, then peak gamma-ray and hard X-5ay luminosity was between 10 to the 44th and 10 to the 45th ergs/s, and the total radiated energy was between 10 to the 43rd and 10 to the 44th ergs.

Gamma ray burst studies are reviewed. The past results, present status and future expectations are outlined regarding endeavors using experiments on balloons, IMP-6 and -7, OGO-3, ISEE-1 and -3, Helios-2, Solar Maximum Mission, the Einstein Observatory, Solar Polar and the Gamma Ray Observatory, and with the interplanetary gamma ray burst networks, to which some of these spacecraft sensors contribute. Additional emphasis is given to the recent discovery of a new type of gamma ray transient, detected on 1979 March 5.

Instrumentation for observing cosmic gamma-ray bursts has been provided for widely separated spacecraft, including the Pioneer Venus Orbiter, ISEE-3, Helios-B, Venera 10 and 11, and Prognoz 7. Simultaneous observations have been made of several gamma bursts with various combinations of these spacecraft and near-earth satellites. Locations of the gamma-burst sources have been calculated for those events where precise timing and ephemeris data are available. The results of optical and HEAO-B observations of the resultant error boxes will be discussed.
