Photodissociation is one of the main destruction pathways for dicarbon (C$_{2}$) in astronomical environments such as diffuse interstellar clouds, yet the accuracy of modern astrochemical models is limited by a lack of accurate photodissociation cross sections in the vacuum ultraviolet range. C$_{2}$ features a strong predissociative $F\,^1\Pi_u - X\,^1\Sigma_g^+$ electronic transition near 130 nm originally measured in 1969; however, no experimental studies of this transition have been carried out since, and theoretical studies of the $F\,^1\Pi_u$ state are limited. In this work, potential energy curves of excited electronic states of C$_{2}$ are calculated with the aim of describing the predissociative nature of the $F\,^1\Pi_u$ state and providing new ab initio photodissociation cross sections for astrochemical applications. Accurate electronic calculations of 56 singlet, triplet, and quintet states are carried out at the DW-SA-CASSCF/MRCI+Q level of theory with a CAS(8,12) active space and the aug-cc-pV5Z basis set augmented with additional diffuse functions. Photodissociation cross sections arising from the vibronic ground state to the $F\,^1\Pi_u$ state are calculated by a coupled-channel model. The total integrated cross section through the $F\,^1\Pi_u$ $v=0$ and $v=1$ bands is 1.198$\times$10$^{-13} $cm$^2$cm$^{-1}$, giving rise to a photodissociation rate of 5.02$\times$10$^{-10}$ s$^{-1}$ under the standard interstellar radiation field, much larger than the rate in the Leiden photodissociation database. Photodissociation by ultraviolet radiation is the key destruction pathway for CS in photon-dominated regions, such as diffuse clouds. However, the large uncertainties of photodissociation cross sections and rates of CS, resulting from a lack of both laboratory experiments and theoretical calculations, limit the accuracy of calculated abundances of S-bearing molecules by modern astrochemical models. Here we show a detailed \textit{ab initio} study of CS photodissociation. Accurate potential energy curves of CS electronic states were obtained by choosing an active space CAS(8,10) in MRCI+Q/aug-cc-pV(5+d)Z calculation with additional diffuse functions, with a focus on the \(B\) and \(C\,^1\Sigma^+\) states. Cross sections for both direct photodissociation and predissociation from the vibronic ground state were calculated by applying the coupled-channel method. We found that the \(C-X\) \((0-0)\) transition has extremely strong absorption due to a large transition dipole moment in the Franck-Condon region and the upper state is resonant with several triplet states via spin-orbit couplings, resulting in predissociation to the main atomic products C \((^3P)\) and S \((^1D)\). Our new calculations show the photodissociation rate under the standard interstellar radiation field is \(2.9\ee{-9}\)\,s\(^{-1}\), with a 57\% contribution from \(C-X\) \((0-0)\) transition. This value is larger than that adopted by the Leiden photodissociation and photoionization database by a factor of 3.0. Diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) are absorption features commonly observed in optical/near-infrared spectra of stars and thought to be associated with polyatomic molecules that comprise a significant reservoir of organic material in the universe. However, the central wavelengths of almost all DIBs do not correspond with electronic transitions of known atomic or molecular species and the specific physical nature of their carriers remains inconclusive despite decades of observational, theoretical, and experimental research. It is well established that DIB carriers are located in the interstellar medium, but the recent discovery of time-varying DIBs in the spectra of the extragalactic supernova SN2012ap suggests that some may be created in massive star environments. Here we report evidence of short time-scale (10-60 d) changes in DIB absorption line substructure toward 3 of 17 massive stars observed as part of a pathfinder survey of variable DIBs conducted with the 1.5-m Tillinghast telescope and Tillinghast Reflector Echelle Spectrograph (TRES) at Fred L. Whipple Observatory. The detections are made in high-resolution optical spectra (R = 44000) having signal-to-noise ratios of 5-15 around the 5797 and 6614 angstrom features, and are considered significant but requiring further investigation. We find that these changes are potentially consistent with interactions between stellar winds and DIB carriers in close proximity. The detection E-cyanomethanimine (E-HNCHCN) towards Sagittarius B2(N) is made by comparing the publicly available Green Bank Telescope (GBT) PRIMOS survey spectra (Hollis et al.) to laboratory rotational spectra from a reaction product screening experiment. The experiment uses broadband molecular rotational spectroscopy to monitor the reaction products produced in an electric discharge source using a gas mixture of NH3 and CH3CN. Several transition frequency coincidences between the reaction product screening spectra and previously unassigned interstellar rotational transitions in the PRIMOS survey have been assigned to E cyanomethanimine. A total of 8 molecular rotational transitions of this molecule between 9 and 50 GHz are observed with the GBT. E-cyanomethanimine, often called the HCN dimer, is an important molecule in prebiotic chemistry because it is a chemical intermediate in proposed synthetic routes of adenine, one of the two purine nucleobases found in DNA and RNA. The excitation temperature T_01 derived from the relative intensities of the J = 0 (para) and J = 1 (ortho) rotational levels of H2 has been assumed to be an accurate measure of the kinetic temperature in interstellar environments. In diffuse molecular clouds, the average value of T_01 is ~70 K. However, the excitation temperature T(H3+) derived from the (J,K) = (1,1) (para) and (1,0) (ortho) rotational levels of H3+ has been observed to be ~30 K in the same types of environments. In this work, we present observations of H3+ in three additional diffuse cloud sight lines for which H2 measurements are available, showing that in 4 of 5 cases T_01 and T(H3+) are discrepant. We then examine the thermalization mechanisms for the ortho:para ratios of H3+ and H2, concluding that indeed T_01 is an accurate measure of the cloud kinetic temperature, while the ortho:para ratio of H3+ need not be thermal. By constructing a steady-state chemical model taking into account the nuclear-spindependence of reactions involving H3+, we show that the ortho:para ratio of H3+ in diffuse molecular clouds is likely governed by a competition between dissociative recombination with electrons and thermalization via reactive collisions with H2., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

The diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) are absorption features observed in optical and near-infrared spectra that are thought to be associated with carbon-rich polyatomic molecules in interstellar gas. However, because the central wavelengths of these bands do not correspond with electronic transitions of any known atomic or molecular species, their nature has remained uncertain since their discovery almost a century ago. Here we report on unusually strong DIBs in optical spectra of the broad- lined Type Ic supernova SN2012ap that exhibit changes in equivalent width over short (. 30 days) timescales. The 4428 A and 6283 A DIB features get weaker with time, whereas the 5780 A feature shows a marginal increase. These nonuniform changes suggest that the supernova is interacting with a nearby source of the DIBs and that the DIB carriers possess high ionization potentials, such as small cations or charged fullerenes. We conclude that moderate-resolution spectra of supernovae with DIB absorptions obtained within weeks of outburst could reveal unique information about the mass-loss environment of their progenitor systems and provide new constraints on the properties of DIB carriers.
