A model program was developed for helping parents, students, teachers, and businesspersons deal effectively with the interrelatedness of work and family responsibilities. Various research procedures, including focus group discussions and mail and telephone surveys administered to adolescent students' parents, and businesspersons in the Lubbock and Dallas/Fort Worth areas of Texas, were used to identify the barriers deterring effective management of the multiple roles of family and work. The research findings were used to develop appropriate strategies for dealing effectively with the interrelatedness of family and work responsibilities. These strategies were then incorporated into a model program for parents, students, teachers, and businesspersons. The program begins by identifying multiple roles played by individuals and explaining basic management concepts. Participants are then given training in time management, asked to complete daily time schedules, and participate in small-group case study assignments. The model program proved highly successfully in field tests conducted at a middle school, high school, center for new directions, and two workplaces.
