This special session paper introduces the Horizon Europe NEUROPULS project, which targets the development of secure and energy-efficient RISC-V interfaced neuromorphic accelerators using augmented silicon photonics technology. Our approach aims to develop an augmented silicon photonics platform, an FPGA-powered RISC-V-connected computing platform, and a complete simulation platform to demonstrate the neuromorphic accelerator capabilities. In particular, their main advantages and limitations will be addressed concerning the underpinning technology for each platform. Then, we will discuss three targeted use cases for edge-computing applications: Global National Satellite System (GNSS) anti-jamming, autonomous driving, and anomaly detection in edge devices. Metafibers expand the functionalities of conventional optical fibers to unprecedented nanoscale light manipulations by integrating metasurfaces on the fiber tips, becoming an emerging light-coupling platform for both nanoscience and fiber optics communities. Mostly exploring the isolated bare fibers, current metafibers remain as proof-of-concept demonstrations due to a lack of standard interfaces with the universal fiber networks. Here, we develop new methodologies to fabricate well-defined plasmonic metasurfaces directly on the end facets of commercial single mode fiber jumpers using standard planar technologies and provide a first demonstration of their practical applications in the nonlinear optics regime. Featuring plug-play connections with fiber circuitry and arbitrary metasurfaces landscapes, the metafibers with tunable plasmonic resonances are implemented into fiber laser cavities, yielding all-fiber sub-picosecond (minimum 513 fs) soliton mode locked lasers at optical wavelengths of 1.5 micrometer and 2 micrometer, demonstrating their unusual polarimetric nonlinear transfer functions and superior saturation absorption responses. Novel insights into the physical mechanisms behind the saturable absorption of plasmonic metasurfaces are provided. The nanofabrication process flow is compatible with existing cleanroom technologies, offering metafibers an avenue to be a regular member of functionalized fiber components. We implement a super-localization method in the time domain that allows the observation of the external motion of soliton molecules in a fiber ring cavity laser with unprecedented accuracy. In particular, we demonstrate the synchronization of two oscillating soliton molecules separated by several nanoseconds, with inter-molecules oscillations following the same pattern as the intramolecular motion of the individual molecules. In this work, we investigate the generation of second harmonic light by gold nanorods and demonstrate that the collected nonlinear intensity depends upon a phase interplay between different modes available in the nanostructure. By recording the backward and forward emitted second harmonic signals from nanorods with various lengths, we find that the maximum nonlinear signal emitted in the forward and backward directions is not obtained for the same nanorod length. We confirm the experimental results with the help of full-wave computations done with a surface integral equation method. These observations are explained by the multipolar nature of the second harmonic emission, which emphasizes the role played by the relative phase between the second harmonic modes. Our findings are of a particular importance for the design of plasmonic nanostructures with controllable nonlinear emission and nonlinear plasmonic sensors as well as for the coherent control of harmonic generations in plasmonic nanostructures.

Hot carriers are energetic photo-excited carriers driving a large range of chemico-physical mechanisms. At the nanoscale, an efficient generation of these carriers is facilitated by illuminating plasmonic antennas. However, the ultrafast relaxation rate severally impedes their deployment in future hot-carrier based devices. In this paper, we report on the picosecond relaxation dynamics of hot carriers in plasmonic monocrystalline gold nanoantennas. The temporal dynamics of the hot carriers is experimentally investigated by interrogating the nonlinear photoluminescence response of the antenna with a spectrally-resolved two-pulse correlation configuration. We measure time-dependent nonlinearity orders varying from 1 to 8, which challenge the common interpretation of multi-photon gold luminescence. We demonstrate that the relaxation of the photo-excited carriers depends of their energies relative to the Fermi level. We find a 60 % variation in the relaxation rate for electron-hole pair energies ranging from c.a. 0.2 to 1.8 eV. The quantitative relationship between hot carrier energy and relaxation dynamics is an important finding for optimizing hot carriers-assisted processes and shed new light in the intricacy of nonlinear photoluminescence in plasmonic structures.

Light localization due to random imperfections in periodic media is paramount in photonics research. The group index is known to be a key parameter for localization near photonic band edges, since small group velocities reinforce light interaction with imperfections. Here, we show that the size of the smallest localized mode that is formed at the band edge of a one-dimensional periodic medium is driven instead by the effective photon mass, i.e. the flatness of the dispersion curve. Our theoretical prediction is supported by numerical simulations, which reveal that photonic-crystal waveguides can exhibit surprisingly small localized modes, much smaller than those observed in Bragg stacks thanks to their larger effective photon mass. This possibility is demonstrated experimentally with a photonic-crystal waveguide fabricated without any intentional disorder, for which near-field measurements allow us to distinctly observe a wavelength-scale localized mode despite the smallness ($\sim 1/1000$ of a wavelength) of the fabrication imperfections.

Remote excitation and emission of two-photon luminescence and second-harmonic generation are observed in micrometer long gold rod optical antennas upon local illumination with a tightly focused near-infrared femtosecond laser beam. We show that the nonlinear radiations can be emitted from the entire antenna and the measured far-field angular patterns bear the information regarding the nature and origins of the respective nonlinear processes. We demonstrate that the nonlinear responses are transported by the propagating surface plasmon at excitation frequency, enabling thereby polariton-mediated tailoring and design of nonlinear responses., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

By analogy to the three dimensional optical bottle beam, we introduce the plasmonic bottle beam: a two dimensional surface wave which features a lattice of plasmonic bottles, i.e. alternating regions of bright focii surrounded by low intensities. The two-dimensional bottle beam is created by the interference of a non-diffracting beam, a cosine-Gaussian beam, and a plane wave, thus giving rise to a non-diffracting complex intensity distribution. By controlling the propagation constant of the cosine-Gauss beam, the size and number of plasmonic bottles can be engineered. The two dimensional lattice of hot spots formed by this new plasmonic wave could have applications in plasmonic trapping.

We resolve the photokinetic rates enhancement of Rhodamine 6G molecules diffusing in a water-glycerol mixture within a single nanometric aperture milled in an opaque aluminium film. Combining fluorescence correlation spectroscopy and lifetime measurements, we report the relative influence of excitation, radiative and non-radiative decay in the fluorescence process, giving a detailed description of the physics behind the overall 15 fold enhancement of the average fluorescence rate per molecule.
