In the diverse field of medical imaging, automatic segmentation has numerous applications and must handle a wide variety of input domains, such as different types of Computed Tomography (CT) scans and Magnetic Resonance (MR) images. This heterogeneity challenges automatic segmentation algorithms to maintain consistent performance across different modalities due to the requirement for spatially aligned and paired images. Typically, segmentation models are trained using a single modality, which limits their ability to generalize to other types of input data without employing transfer learning techniques. Additionally, leveraging complementary information from different modalities to enhance segmentation precision often necessitates substantial modifications to popular encoder-decoder designs, such as introducing multiple branched encoding or decoding paths for each modality. In this work, we propose a simple Multi-Modal Segmentation (MulModSeg) strategy to enhance medical image segmentation across multiple modalities, specifically CT and MR. It incorporates two key designs: a modality-conditioned text embedding framework via a frozen text encoder that adds modality awareness to existing segmentation frameworks without significant structural modifications or computational overhead, and an alternating training procedure that facilitates the integration of essential features from unpaired CT and MR inputs. Through extensive experiments with both Fully Convolutional Network and Transformer-based backbones, MulModSeg consistently outperforms previous methods in segmenting abdominal multi-organ and cardiac substructures for both CT and MR modalities. 6G, the next generation of mobile networks, is set to offer even higher data rates, ultra-reliability, and lower latency than 5G. New 6G services will increase the load and dynamism of the network. Network Function Virtualization (NFV) aids with this increased load and dynamism by eliminating hardware dependency. It aims to boost the flexibility and scalability of network deployment services by separating network functions from their specific proprietary forms so that they can run as virtual network functions (VNFs) on commodity hardware. It is essential to design an NFV orchestration and management framework to support these services. However, deploying bulky monolithic VNFs on the network is difficult, especially when underlying resources are scarce, resulting in ineffective resource management. To address this, microservices-based NFV approaches are proposed. In this approach, monolithic VNFs are decomposed into micro VNFs, increasing the likelihood of their successful placement and resulting in more efficient resource management. This article discusses the proposed framework for resource allocation for microservices-based services to provide end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) using the Double Deep Q Learning (DDQL) approach. Furthermore, to enhance this resource allocation approach, we discussed and addressed two crucial sub-problems: the need for a dynamic priority technique and the presence of the low-priority starvation problem. Using the Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) model, an Adaptive Scheduling model is developed that effectively mitigates the starvation problem. Additionally, the impact of incorporating traffic load considerations into deployment and scheduling is thoroughly investigated.

Open Radio Access Network (RAN) is a transformative paradigm that supports openness, interoperability, and intelligence, with the O-RAN architecture being the most recognized framework in academia and industry. In the context of Open RAN, the importance of Energy Saving (ES) is heightened, especially with the current direction of network densification in sixth generation of mobile networks (6G). Traditional energy-saving methods in RAN struggle with the increasing dynamics of the network. This paper proposes using Reinforcement Learning (RL), a subset of Machine Learning (ML), to improve ES. We present a novel deep RL method for ES in 6G O-RAN, implemented as xApp (ES-xApp). We developed two Deep Q-Network (DQN)-based ES-xApps. ES-xApp-1 uses RSS and User Equipment (UE) geolocations, while ES-xApp-2 uses only RSS. The proposed models significantly outperformed heuristic and baseline xApps, especially with over 20 UEs. With 50 UEs, 50% of Radio Cards (RCs) were switched off, compared to 17% with the heuristic algorithm. We have observed that more informative inputs may lead to more stable training and results. To protect consumer privacy, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) mandates that businesses provide consumers with a straightforward way to opt out of the sale and sharing of their personal information. However, the control that businesses enjoy over the opt-out process allows them to impose hurdles on consumers aiming to opt out, including by employing dark patterns. Motivated by the enactment of the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), which strengthens the CCPA and explicitly forbids certain dark patterns in the opt-out process, we investigate how dark patterns are used in opt-out processes and assess their compliance with CCPA regulations. Our research reveals that websites employ a variety of dark patterns. Some of these patterns are explicitly prohibited under the CCPA; others evidently take advantage of legal loopholes. Despite the initial efforts to restrict dark patterns by policymakers, there is more work to be done.

WiFi Channel State Information (CSI)-based activity recognition has sparked numerous studies due to its widespread availability and privacy protection. However, when applied in practical applications, general CSI-based recognition models may face challenges related to the limited generalization capability, since individuals with different behavior habits will cause various fluctuations in CSI data and it is difficult to gather enough training data to cover all kinds of motion habits. To tackle this problem, we design a diffusion model-based Contrastive Learning framework for human Activity Recognition (CLAR) using WiFi CSI. On the basis of the contrastive learning framework, we primarily introduce two components for CLAR to enhance CSI-based activity recognition. To generate diverse augmented data and complement limited training data, we propose a diffusion model-based time series-specific augmentation model. In contrast to typical diffusion models that directly apply conditions to the generative process, potentially resulting in distorted CSI data, our tailored model dissects these condition into the high-frequency and low-frequency components, and then applies these conditions to the generative process with varying weights. This can alleviate data distortion and yield high-quality augmented data. To efficiently capture the difference of the sample importance, we present an adaptive weight algorithm. Different from typical contrastive learning methods which equally consider all the training samples, this algorithm adaptively adjusts the weights of positive sample pairs for learning better data representations. Large Language Models (LLMs) offer significant potential for clinical symptom extraction, but their deployment in healthcare settings is constrained by privacy concerns, computational limitations, and operational costs. This study investigates the optimization of compact LLMs for cancer toxicity symptom extraction using a novel iterative refinement approach. We employ a student-teacher architecture, utilizing Zephyr-7b-beta and Phi3-mini-128 as student models and GPT-4o as the teacher, to dynamically select between prompt refinement, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), and fine-tuning strategies. Our experiments on 294 clinical notes covering 12 post-radiotherapy toxicity symptoms demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach. The RAG method proved most efficient, improving average accuracy scores from 0.32 to 0.73 for Zephyr-7b-beta and from 0.40 to 0.87 for Phi3-mini-128 during refinement. In the test set, both models showed an approximate 0.20 increase in accuracy across symptoms. Notably, this improvement was achieved at a cost 45 times lower than GPT-4o for Zephyr and 79 times lower for Phi-3. These results highlight the potential of iterative refinement techniques in enhancing the capabilities of compact LLMs for clinical applications, offering a balance between performance, cost-effectiveness, and privacy preservation in healthcare settings.

COVID-19 as a global pandemic causes a massive disruption to social stability that threatens human life and the economy. Policymakers and all elements of society must deliver measurable actions based on the pandemic's severity to minimize the detrimental impact of COVID-19. A proper forecasting system is arguably important to provide an early signal of the risk of COVID-19 infection so that the authorities are ready to protect the people from the worst. However, making a good forecasting model for infection risks in different cities or regions is not an easy task, because it has a lot of influential factors that are difficult to be identified manually. To address the current limitations, we propose a deep graph learning model, called PANDORA, to predict the infection risks of COVID-19, by considering all essential factors and integrating them into a geographical network. The framework uses geographical position relations and transportation frequency as higher-order structural properties formulated by higher-order network structures (i.e., network motifs). Moreover, four significant node attributes (i.e., multiple features of a particular area, including climate, medical condition, economy, and human mobility) are also considered. We propose three different aggregators to better aggregate node attributes and structural features, namely, Hadamard, Summation, and Connection. Experimental results over real data show that PANDORA outperforms the baseline method with higher accuracy and faster convergence speed, no matter which aggregator is chosen. We believe that PANDORA using deep graph learning provides a promising approach to get superior performance in infection risk level forecasting and help humans battle the COVID-19 crisis.

The proliferation of 5G technology presents an unprecedented challenge in managing the energy consumption of densely deployed network infrastructures, particularly Base Stations (BSs), which account for the majority of power usage in mobile networks. The O-RAN architecture, with its emphasis on open and intelligent design, offers a promising framework to address the Energy Efficiency (EE) demands of modern telecommunication systems. This paper introduces two xApps designed for the O-RAN architecture to optimize power savings without compromising the Quality of Service (QoS). Utilizing a commercial RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) simulator, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed xApps through extensive simulations that reflect real-world operational conditions. Our results show a significant reduction in power consumption, achieving up to 50% power savings with a minimal number of User Equipments (UEs), by intelligently managing the operational state of Radio Cards (RCs), particularly through switching between active and sleep modes based on network resource block usage conditions., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) emerges as a prime solution for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) trajectory planning, offering proficiency in navigating high-dimensional spaces, adaptability to dynamic environments, and making sequential decisions based on real-time feedback. Despite these advantages, the use of DRL for UAV trajectory planning requires significant retraining when the UAV is confronted with a new environment, resulting in wasted resources and time. Therefore, it is essential to develop techniques that can reduce the overhead of retraining DRL models, enabling them to adapt to constantly changing environments. This paper presents a novel method to reduce the need for extensive retraining using a double deep Q network (DDQN) model as a pretrained base, which is subsequently adapted to different urban environments through Continuous Transfer Learning (CTL). Our method involves transferring the learned model weights and adapting the learning parameters, including the learning and exploration rates, to suit each new environment specific characteristics. The effectiveness of our approach is validated in three scenarios, each with different levels of similarity. CTL significantly improves learning speed and success rates compared to DDQN models initiated from scratch. Moderating user-generated content on online platforms is crucial for balancing user safety and freedom of speech. Particularly in the United States, platforms are not subject to legal constraints prescribing permissible content. Each platform has thus developed bespoke content moderation policies, but there is little work towards a comparative understanding of these policies across platforms and topics. This paper presents the first systematic study of these policies from the 43 largest online platforms hosting user-generated content, focusing on policies around copyright infringement, harmful speech, and misleading content. We build a custom web-scraper to obtain policy text and develop a unified annotation scheme to analyze the text for the presence of critical components. We find significant structural and compositional variation in policies across topics and platforms, with some variation attributable to disparate legal groundings. We lay the groundwork for future studies of ever-evolving content moderation policies and their impact on users.

A patient's digital twin is a computational model that describes the evolution of their health over time. Digital twins have the potential to revolutionize medicine by enabling individual-level computer simulations of human health, which can be used to conduct more efficient clinical trials or to recommend personalized treatment options. Due to the overwhelming complexity of human biology, machine learning approaches that leverage large datasets of historical patients' longitudinal health records to generate patients' digital twins are more tractable than potential mechanistic models. In this manuscript, we describe a neural network architecture that can learn conditional generative models of clinical trajectories, which we call Digital Twin Generators (DTGs), that can create digital twins of individual patients. We show that the same neural network architecture can be trained to generate accurate digital twins for patients across 13 different indications simply by changing the training set and tuning hyperparameters. By introducing a general purpose architecture, we aim to unlock the ability to scale machine learning approaches to larger datasets and across more indications so that a digital twin could be created for any patient in the world.

The widespread sharing of consumers personal information with third parties raises significant privacy concerns. The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) mandates that online businesses offer consumers the option to opt out of the sale and sharing of personal information. Our study automatically tracks the presence of the opt-out link longitudinally across multiple states after the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA) went into effect. We categorize websites based on whether they are subject to CCPA and investigate cases of potential non-compliance. We find a number of websites that implement the opt-out link early and across all examined states but also find a significant number of CCPA-subject websites that fail to offer any opt-out methods even when CCPA is in effect. Our findings can shed light on how websites are reacting to the CCPA and identify potential gaps in compliance and opt-out method designs that hinder consumers from exercising CCPA opt-out rights.

This study introduces a novel teacher-student architecture utilizing Large Language Models (LLMs) to improve prostate cancer radiotherapy symptom extraction from clinical notes. Mixtral, the student model, initially extracts symptoms, followed by GPT-4, the teacher model, which refines prompts based on Mixtral's performance. This iterative process involved 294 single symptom clinical notes across 12 symptoms, with up to 16 rounds of refinement per epoch. Results showed significant improvements in extracting symptoms from both single and multi-symptom notes. For 59 single symptom notes, accuracy increased from 0.51 to 0.71, precision from 0.52 to 0.82, recall from 0.52 to 0.72, and F1 score from 0.49 to 0.73. In 375 multi-symptom notes, accuracy rose from 0.24 to 0.43, precision from 0.6 to 0.76, recall from 0.24 to 0.43, and F1 score from 0.20 to 0.44. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of advanced prompt engineering in LLMs for radiation oncology use.

It is common practice for researchers to join public WhatsApp chats and scrape their contents for analysis. However, research shows collecting data this way contradicts user expectations and preferences, even if the data is effectively public. To overcome these issues, we outline design considerations for collecting WhatsApp chat data with improved user privacy by heightening user control and oversight of data collection and taking care to minimize the data researchers collect and process off a user's device. We refer to these design principles as User-Centered Data Sharing (UCDS). To evaluate our UCDS principles, we implemented a mobile application representing one possible instance of these improved data collection techniques and evaluated the viability of using the app to collect WhatsApp chat data. Second, we surveyed WhatsApp users to gather user perceptions on common existing WhatsApp data collection methods as well as UCDS methods. Our results show that we were able to glean similar informative insights into WhatsApp chats using UCDS principles in our prototype app to common, less privacy-preserving methods. Our survey showed that methods following the UCDS principles are preferred by users because they offered users more control over the data collection process. Future user studies could further expand upon UCDS principles to overcome complications of researcher-to-group communication in research on WhatsApp chats and evaluate these principles in other data sharing contexts.

For video or web services, it is crucial to measure user-perceived quality of experience (QoE) at scale under various video quality or page loading delays. However, fast QoE measurements remain challenging as they must elicit subjective assessment from human users. Previous work either (1) automates QoE measurements by letting crowdsourcing raters watch and rate QoE test videos or (2) dynamically prunes redundant QoE tests based on previously collected QoE measurements. Unfortunately, it is hard to combine both ideas because traditional crowdsourcing requires QoE test videos to be pre-determined before a crowdsourcing campaign begins. Thus, if researchers want to dynamically prune redundant test videos based on other test videos' QoE, they are forced to launch multiple crowdsourcing campaigns, causing extra overheads to re-calibrate or train raters every time. This paper presents VidPlat, the first open-source tool for fast and automated QoE measurements, by allowing dynamic pruning of QoE test videos within a single crowdsourcing task. VidPlat creates an indirect shim layer between researchers and the crowdsourcing platforms. It allows researchers to define a logic that dynamically determines which new test videos need more QoE ratings based on the latest QoE measurements, and it then redirects crowdsourcing raters to watch QoE test videos dynamically selected by this logic. Other than having fewer crowdsourcing campaigns, VidPlat also reduces the total number of QoE ratings by dynamically deciding when enough ratings are gathered for each test video. It is an open-source platform that future researchers can reuse and customize. We have used VidPlat in three projects (web loading, on-demand video, and online gaming). We show that VidPlat can reduce crowdsourcing cost by 31.8% - 46.0% and latency by 50.9% - 68.8%.

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a key technique for developing Medical Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems that leverage Electronic Health Record (EHR) data to build diagnostic and prognostic models. NLP enables the conversion of unstructured clinical text into structured data that can be fed into AI algorithms. The emergence of the transformer architecture and large language models (LLMs) has led to remarkable advances in NLP for various healthcare tasks, such as entity recognition, relation extraction, sentence similarity, text summarization, and question answering. In this article, we review the major technical innovations that underpin modern NLP models and present state-of-the-art NLP applications that employ LLMs in radiation oncology research. However, these LLMs are prone to many errors such as hallucinations, biases, and ethical violations, which necessitate rigorous evaluation and validation before clinical deployment. As such, we propose a comprehensive framework for assessing the NLP models based on their purpose and clinical fit, technical performance, bias and trust, legal and ethical implications, and quality assurance, prior to implementation in clinical radiation oncology. Our article aims to provide guidance and insights for researchers and clinicians who are interested in developing and using NLP models in clinical radiation oncology.

Segment Anything Model (SAM) is one of the pioneering prompt-based foundation models for image segmentation and has been rapidly adopted for various medical imaging applications. However, in clinical settings, creating effective prompts is notably challenging and time-consuming, requiring the expertise of domain specialists such as physicians. This requirement significantly diminishes SAM's primary advantage, its interactive capability with end users, in medical applications. Moreover, recent studies have indicated that SAM, originally designed for 2D natural images, performs suboptimally on 3D medical image segmentation tasks. This subpar performance is attributed to the domain gaps between natural and medical images and the disparities in spatial arrangements between 2D and 3D images, particularly in multi-organ segmentation applications. To overcome these challenges, we present a novel technique termed AutoProSAM. This method automates 3D multi-organ CT-based segmentation by leveraging SAM's foundational model capabilities without relying on domain experts for prompts. The approach utilizes parameter-efficient adaptation techniques to adapt SAM for 3D medical imagery and incorporates an effective automatic prompt learning paradigm specific to this domain. By eliminating the need for manual prompts, it enhances SAM's capabilities for 3D medical image segmentation and achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance in CT-based multi-organ segmentation tasks. Nowadays, non-privacy small-scale motion detection has attracted an increasing amount of research in remote sensing in speech recognition. These new modalities are employed to enhance and restore speech information from speakers of multiple types of data. In this paper, we propose a dataset contains 7.5 GHz Channel Impulse Response (CIR) data from ultra-wideband (UWB) radars, 77-GHz frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) data from millimetre wave (mmWave) radar, and laser data. Meanwhile, a depth camera is adopted to record the landmarks of the subject's lip and voice. Approximately 400 minutes of annotated speech profiles are provided, which are collected from 20 participants speaking 5 vowels, 15 words and 16 sentences. The dataset has been validated and has potential for the research of lip reading and multimodal speech recognition.

The Network Function Virtualization (NFV)-Resource Allocation (RA) problem is NP-Hard. Traditional deployment methods revealed the existence of a starvation problem, which the researchers failed to recognize. Basically, starvation here, means the longer waiting times and eventual rejection of low-priority services due to a 'time out'. The contribution of this work is threefold: a) explain the existence of the starvation problem in the existing methods and their drawbacks, b) introduce 'Adaptive Scheduling' (AdSch) which is an 'intelligent scheduling' scheme using a three-factor approach (priority, threshold waiting time, and reliability), which proves to be more reasonable than traditional methods solely based on priority, and c) a 'Dynamic Prioritization' (DyPr), allocation method is also proposed for unseen services and the importance of macro- and micro-level priority. We presented a zero-touch solution using Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) for adaptive scheduling and an online-Ridge Regression (RR) model for dynamic prioritization. The DDPG successfully identified the 'Beneficial and Starving' services, efficiently deploying twice as many low-priority services as others, reducing the starvation problem. Our online-RR model learns the pattern in less than 100 transitions, and the prediction model has an accuracy rate of more than 80%.

The emerging video applications greatly increase the demand in network bandwidth that is not easy to scale. To provide higher quality of experience (QoE) under limited bandwidth, a recent trend is to leverage the heterogeneity of quality preferences across individual users. Although these efforts have suggested the great potential benefits, service providers still have not deployed them to realize the promised QoE improvement. The missing piece is an automation of online per-user QoE modeling and optimization scheme for new users. Previous efforts either optimize QoE by known per-user QoE models or learn a user's QoE model by offline approaches, such as analysis of video viewing history and in-lab user study. Relying on such offline modeling is problematic, because QoE optimization will start late for collecting enough data to train an unbiased QoE model. In this paper, we propose VidHoc, the first automatic system that jointly personalizes QoE model and optimizes QoE in an online manner for each new user. VidHoc can build per-user QoE models within a small number of video sessions as well as maintain good QoE. We evaluate VidHoc in a pilot deployment to fifteen users for four months with the care of statistical validity. Compared with other baselines, the results show that VidHoc can save 17.3% bandwidth while maintaining the same QoE or improve QoE by 13.9% with the same bandwidth.

Computed Tomography (CT) based precise prostate segmentation for treatment planning is challenging due to (1) the unclear boundary of the prostate derived from CT's poor soft tissue contrast and (2) the limitation of convolutional neural network-based models in capturing long-range global context. Here we propose a novel focal transformer-based image segmentation architecture to effectively and efficiently extract local visual features and global context from CT images. Additionally, we design an auxiliary boundary-induced label regression task coupled with the main prostate segmentation task to address the unclear boundary issue in CT images. We demonstrate that this design significantly improves the quality of the CT-based prostate segmentation task over other competing methods, resulting in substantially improved performance, i.e., higher Dice Similarity Coefficient, lower Hausdorff Distance, and Average Symmetric Surface Distance, on both private and public CT image datasets. Automatic diagnosis of malignant prostate cancer patients from mpMRI has been studied heavily in the past years. Model interpretation and domain drift have been the main road blocks for clinical utilization. As an extension from our previous work where we trained a customized convolutional neural network on a public cohort with 201 patients and the cropped 2D patches around the region of interest were used as the input, the cropped 2.5D slices of the prostate glands were used as the input, and the optimal model were searched in the model space using autoKeras. Something different was peripheral zone (PZ) and central gland (CG) were trained and tested separately, the PZ detector and CG detector were demonstrated effectively in highlighting the most suspicious slices out of a sequence, hopefully to greatly ease the workload for the physicians., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1903.12331

This paper introduces a Wi-Fi signal based passive wireless sensing system that has the capability to detect diverse indoor human movements, from whole body motions to limb movements and including breathing movements of the chest. The real time signal processing used for human body motion sensing and software defined radio demo system are described and verified in practical experiments scenarios, which include detection of through-wall human body movement, hand gesture or tremor, and even respiration. The degree of laser-induced graphitisation from a sp3-bonded to a sp2-bonded carbon fraction in a single crystal chemical vapour deposited (CVD) diamond under a varying fluence of an ultrashort pulsed laser (30 fs, 800 nm, 1 kHz) irradiation has been studied. The tetrahedral CVD sp3-phase was found to transition to primarily an sp2-aromatic crystalline graphitic fraction below the critical fluence of 3.9 J/cm2, above which predominantly an amorphous carbon was formed. A fractional increase of fluence from 3.3 J/cm2 to 3.9 J/cm2 (~ 20 %) resulted in a substantial (~ three-fold) increased depth of the sp2-graphitised areas owing to the non-linear interactions associated with an fs-laser irradiation. Additionally, formation of C=O carbonyl group was observed below the critical threshold fluence; the C=O cleavage occurred gradually with the increase of irradiation fluence of 30 fs laser light. Motion tracking systems based on optical sensors typically often suffer from issues, such as poor lighting conditions, occlusion, limited coverage, and may raise privacy concerns. More recently, radio frequency (RF)-based approaches using commercial WiFi devices have emerged which offer low-cost ubiquitous sensing whilst preserving privacy. However, the output of an RF sensing system, such as Range-Doppler spectrograms, cannot represent human motion intuitively and usually requires further processing. In this study, MDPose, a novel framework for human skeletal motion reconstruction based on WiFi micro-Doppler signatures, is proposed. It provides an effective solution to track human activities by reconstructing a skeleton model with 17 key points, which can assist with the interpretation of conventional RF sensing outputs in a more understandable way. Specifically, MDPose has various incremental stages to gradually address a series of challenges: First, a denoising algorithm is implemented to remove any unwanted noise that may affect the feature extraction and enhance weak Doppler signatures. Secondly, the convolutional neural network (CNN)-recurrent neural network (RNN) architecture is applied to learn temporal-spatial dependency from clean micro-Doppler signatures and restore key points' velocity information. Finally, a pose optimising mechanism is employed to estimate the initial state of the skeleton and to limit the increase of error. We have conducted comprehensive tests in a variety of environments using numerous subjects with a single receiver radar system to demonstrate the performance of MDPose, and report 29.4mm mean absolute error over all key points positions, which outperforms state-of-the-art RF-based pose estimation systems.

Despite the Internet's continued growth, it increasingly depends on a small set of service providers to support Domain Name System (DNS) and web content hosting. This trend poses many potential threats including susceptibility to outages, failures, and potential censorship by providers. This paper aims to quantify consolidation in terms of popular domains' reliance on a small set of organizations for both DNS and web hosting. We highlight the extent to which a set of relatively few platforms host the authoritative name servers and web content for the top million websites. Our results show that both DNS and web hosting are concentrated, with Cloudflare and Amazon hosting over $30\%$ of the domains for both services. With the addition of Akamai, Fastly, and Google, these five organizations host $60\%$ of index pages in the Tranco top 10K, as well as the majority of external page resources. These trends are consistent across six different global vantage points, indicating that consolidation is happening globally and popular organizations can influence users' online experience across the world.

This paper presents a comprehensive dataset intended to evaluate passive Human Activity Recognition (HAR) and localization techniques with measurements obtained from synchronized Radio-Frequency (RF) devices and vision-based sensors. The dataset consists of RF data including Channel State Information (CSI) extracted from a WiFi Network Interface Card (NIC), Passive WiFi Radar (PWR) built upon a Software Defined Radio (SDR) platform, and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) signals acquired via commercial off-the-shelf hardware. It also consists of vision/Infra-red based data acquired from Kinect sensors. Approximately 8 hours of annotated measurements are provided, which are collected across two rooms from 6 participants performing 6 daily activities. This dataset can be exploited to advance WiFi and vision-based HAR, for example, using pattern recognition, skeletal representation, deep learning algorithms or other novel approaches to accurately recognize human activities. Furthermore, it can potentially be used to passively track a human in an indoor environment. We present a joint experimental-theoretical study on the effect of the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of a few-cycle pulse on the atomic excitation process. We focus on the excitation rates of argon as a function of CEP in the intensity range from 50-300 TW/cm$^2$, which covers the transition between the multiphoton and tunneling regimes. Through numerical simulations based on solving the time-dependent Schr\"{o}dinger equation (TDSE), we show that the resulting bound-state population is highly sensitive to both the intensity and the CEP. Because the intensity varies over the interaction region, the CEP effect is considerably reduced in the experiment. Nevertheless, the data clearly agree with the theoretical prediction, and the results encourage the use of precisely tailored laser fields to coherently control the strong-field excitation process. We find a markedly different behavior for the CEP-dependent bound-state population at low and high intensities with a clear boundary, which we attribute to the transition from the multiphoton to the tunneling regime., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We investigate the influence of relativistic nondipole effects on the photoelectron spectra of argon, particularly in the low kinetic energy region (0 eV - 5 eV). In our experiment, we use intense linearly polarised 800 nm laser pulse to ionise Ar from a jet and we record photoelectron energy and momentum distributions using a reaction microscope (REMI). Our measurements show that nondipole effect can cause an energy-dependent asymmetry along the laser propagation direction in the photoelectron energy and momentum spectra. Model simulation based on time-dependent Dirac equation (TDDE) can reproduce our measurement results. The electron trajectory analysis based on classical model reveals that the photoelectron which obtains negative momentum shift along laser propagation direction is caused by the interplay between the Lorenz force induced radiation pressure during its free propagation in continuum and re-scattering by Coulomb potential of the parent ion when it is driven back by the laser field., Comment: 11 pages, 15 Figures

This work presents an application of Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system for monitoring human activities directly related to healthcare. Real-time monitoring of humans can assist professionals in providing healthy living enabling technologies to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of people of all age groups. To enhance the human activity recognition performance of the ISAC system, we propose to use synthetic data generated through our human micro-Doppler simulator, SimHumalator to augment our limited measurement data. We generate a more realistic micro-Doppler signature dataset using a style-transfer neural network. The proposed network extracts environmental effects such as noise, multipath, and occlusions effects directly from the measurement data and transfers these features to our clean simulated signatures. This results in more realistic-looking signatures qualitatively and quantitatively. We use these enhanced signatures to augment our measurement data and observe an improvement in the classification performance by 5% compared to no augmentation case. Further, we benchmark the data augmentation performance of the style transferred signatures with three other synthetic datasets -- clean simulated spectrograms (no environmental effects), simulated data with added AWGN noise, and simulated data with GAN generated noise. The results indicate that style transferred simulated signatures well captures environmental factors more than any other synthetic dataset.

Micro-Doppler signatures contain considerable information about target dynamics. However, the radar sensing systems are easily affected by noisy surroundings, resulting in uninterpretable motion patterns on the micro-Doppler spectrogram. Meanwhile, radar returns often suffer from multipath, clutter and interference. These issues lead to difficulty in, for example motion feature extraction, activity classification using micro Doppler signatures ($\mu$-DS), etc. In this paper, we propose a latent feature-wise mapping strategy, called Feature Mapping Network (FMNet), to transform measured spectrograms so that they more closely resemble the output from a simulation under the same conditions. Based on measured spectrogram and the matched simulated data, our framework contains three parts: an Encoder which is used to extract latent representations/features, a Decoder outputs reconstructed spectrogram according to the latent features, and a Discriminator minimizes the distance of latent features of measured and simulated data. We demonstrate the FMNet with six activities data and two experimental scenarios, and final results show strong enhanced patterns and can keep actual motion information to the greatest extent. On the other hand, we also propose a novel idea which trains a classifier with only simulated data and predicts new measured samples after cleaning them up with the FMNet. From final classification results, we can see significant improvements.

The integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), in which the sensing and communication share the same frequency band and hardware, has emerged as a key technology in future wireless systems. Early works on ISAC have been focused on the design, analysis and optimization of practical ISAC technologies for various ISAC systems. While this line of works are necessary, it is equally important to study the fundamental limits of ISAC in order to understand the gap between the current state-of-the-art technologies and the performance limits, and provide useful insights and guidance for the development of better ISAC technologies that can approach the performance limits. In this paper, we aim to provide a comprehensive survey for the current research progress on the fundamental limits of ISAC. Particularly, we first propose a systematic classification method for both traditional radio sensing (such as radar sensing and wireless localization) and ISAC so that they can be naturally incorporated into a unified framework. Then we summarize the major performance metrics and bounds used in sensing, communications and ISAC, respectively. After that, we present the current research progresses on fundamental limits of each class of the traditional sensing and ISAC systems. This work presents a simulation framework to generate human micro-Dopplers in WiFi based passive radar scenarios, wherein we simulate IEEE 802.11g complaint WiFi transmissions using MATLAB's WLAN toolbox and human animation models derived from a marker-based motion capture system. We integrate WiFi transmission signals with the human animation data to generate the micro-Doppler features that incorporate the diversity of human motion characteristics, and the sensor parameters. In this paper, we consider five human activities. We uniformly benchmark the classification performance of multiple machine learning and deep learning models against a common dataset. Further, we validate the classification performance using the real radar data captured simultaneously with the motion capture system. We present experimental results using simulations and measurements demonstrating good classification accuracy of $\geq$ 95\% and $\approx$ 90\%, respectively.

Micro-Doppler analysis has become increasingly popular in recent years owning to the ability of the technique to enhance classification strategies. Applications include recognising everyday human activities, distinguishing drone from birds, and identifying different types of vehicles. However, noisy time-frequency spectrograms can significantly affect the performance of the classifier and must be tackled using appropriate denoising algorithms. In recent years, deep learning algorithms have spawned many deep neural network-based denoising algorithms. For these methods, noise modelling is the most important part and is used to assist in training. In this paper, we decompose the problem and propose a novel denoising scheme: first, a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) is used to learn the noise distribution and correlation from the real-world environment; then, a simulator is used to generate clean Micro-Doppler spectrograms; finally, the generated noise and clean simulation data are combined as the training data to train a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) denoiser. In experiments, we qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed this procedure on both simulation and measurement data. Besides, the idea of learning from natural noise can be applied well to other existing frameworks and demonstrate greater performance than other noise models.

This work generalizes the theory of arithmetic local constants, introduced by Mazur and Rubin, to better address abelian varieties with a larger endomorphism ring than $\mathbb{Z}$. We then study the growth of the $p^\infty$-Selmer rank of our abelian variety, and we address the problem of extending the results of Mazur and Rubin to dihedral towers $k\subset K\subset F$ in which $[F:K]$ is not a $p$-power extension.

There has been an increase in interest in experimental evaluations to estimate causal effects, partly because their internal validity tends to be high. At the same time, as part of the big data revolution, large, detailed, and representative, administrative data sets have become more widely available. However, the credibility of estimates of causal effects based on such data sets alone can be low. In this paper, we develop statistical methods for systematically combining experimental and observational data to obtain credible estimates of the causal effect of a binary treatment on a primary outcome that we only observe in the observational sample. Both the observational and experimental samples contain data about a treatment, observable individual characteristics, and a secondary (often short term) outcome. To estimate the effect of a treatment on the primary outcome while addressing the potential confounding in the observational sample, we propose a method that makes use of estimates of the relationship between the treatment and the secondary outcome from the experimental sample. If assignment to the treatment in the observational sample were unconfounded, we would expect the treatment effects on the secondary outcome in the two samples to be similar. We interpret differences in the estimated causal effects on the secondary outcome between the two samples as evidence of unobserved confounders in the observational sample, and develop control function methods for using those differences to adjust the estimates of the treatment effects on the primary outcome. When atoms or molecules are exposed to strong short-pulse infrared radiation, ionization as well as "frustrated tunneling ionization" (FTI) can occur, in which a portion of the almost ionized electrons recombine into the initial ground or an excited bound state. We analyze the ellipticity dependence of the relative signals that are predicted in a single-active electron approximation (SAE), the validity of which is checked against a parameter-free multi-electron \hbox{$R$-matrix} (close-coupling) with time dependence approach. We find good agreement between the results from both models, thereby providing confidence in the SAE model potential to treat the process of interest. Comparison of the relative excitation probabilities found in our numerical calculations with the predictions of Landsman {\it et al.}\ (New Journal of Physics {\bf 15} (2013) 013001) and Zhao {\it et al.}\ (Optics Express {\bf 27} (2019) 21689) reveals good agreement with the former for short pulses. We study how and why university students chose and use VPNs, and whether they are aware of the security and privacy risks that VPNs pose. To answer these questions, we conducted 32 in-person interviews and a survey with 349 respondents, all university students in the United States. We find students are mostly concerned with access to content and privacy concerns were often secondary. They made tradeoffs to achieve a particular goal, such as using a free commercial VPN that may collect their online activities to access an online service in a geographic area. Many users expected that their VPNs were collecting data about them, although they did not understand how VPNs work. Internet-connected consumer devices have rapidly increased in popularity; however, relatively little is known about how these technologies are affecting interpersonal relationships in multi-occupant households. In this study, we conduct 13 semi-structured interviews and survey 508 individuals from a variety of backgrounds to discover and categorize how consumer IoT devices are affecting interpersonal relationships in the United States. We highlight several themes, providing exploratory data about the pervasiveness of interpersonal costs and benefits of consumer IoT devices. We investigate AC Stark-shifted resonances in argon with ultrashort near-infrared pulses. Using 30 fs pulses we observe periodic enhancements of the excitation yield in the intensity regions corresponding to the absorption of 13 and 14 photons. By reducing the pulse duration to 6 fs with only a few optical cycles, we also demonstrate that the enhancements are significantly reduced beyond what is measurable in the experiment. Comparing these to numerical predictions, which are in quantitative agreement with experimental results, we find that even though the quantum-state distribution can be broad, the enhancements are largely due to efficient population of a select few AC Stark-shifted resonant states rather than the closing of an ionization channel. Because these resonances are dependent on the frequency and intensity of the laser field, the broad bandwidth of the 6 fs pulses means that the resonance condition is fulfilled across a large range of intensities. This is further exaggerated by volume-averaging effects, resulting in excitation of the $5g$ state at almost all intensities and reducing the apparent magnitude of the enhancements. For 30 fs pulses, volume averaging also broadens the quantum state distribution but the enhancements are still large enough to survive. In this case, selectivity of excitation to a single state is reduced below 25% of the relative population. However, an analysis of TDSE simulations indicates that excitation of up to 60% into a single state is possible if volume averaging can be eliminated and the intensity can be precisely controlled., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Many Internet of Things (IoT) devices have voice user interfaces (VUIs). One of the most popular VUIs is Amazon's Alexa, which supports more than 47,000 third-party applications ("skills"). We study how Alexa's integration of these skills may confuse users. Our survey of 237 participants found that users do not understand that skills are often operated by third parties, that they often confuse third-party skills with native Alexa functions, and that they are unaware of the functions that the native Alexa system supports. Surprisingly, users who interact with Alexa more frequently are more likely to conclude that a third-party skill is native Alexa functionality. The potential for misunderstanding creates new security and privacy risks: attackers can develop third-party skills that operate without users' knowledge or masquerade as native Alexa functions. To mitigate this threat, we make design recommendations to help users distinguish native and third-party skills.

Dark patterns are user interface design choices that benefit an online service by coercing, steering, or deceiving users into making unintended and potentially harmful decisions. We present automated techniques that enable experts to identify dark patterns on a large set of websites. Using these techniques, we study shopping websites, which often use dark patterns to influence users into making more purchases or disclosing more information than they would otherwise. Analyzing ~53K product pages from ~11K shopping websites, we discover 1,818 dark pattern instances, together representing 15 types and 7 broader categories. We examine these dark patterns for deceptive practices, and find 183 websites that engage in such practices. We also uncover 22 third-party entities that offer dark patterns as a turnkey solution. Finally, we develop a taxonomy of dark pattern characteristics that describes the underlying influence of the dark patterns and their potential harm on user decision-making. Deep learning models have had a great success in disease classifications using large data pools of skin cancer images or lung X-rays. However, data scarcity has been the roadblock of applying deep learning models directly on prostate multiparametric MRI (mpMRI). Although model interpretation has been heavily studied for natural images for the past few years, there has been a lack of interpretation of deep learning models trained on medical images. This work designs a customized workflow for the small and imbalanced data set of prostate mpMRI where features were extracted from a deep learning model and then analyzed by a traditional machine learning classifier. In addition, this work contributes to revealing how deep learning models interpret mpMRI for prostate cancer patients stratification.

Action monitoring in a home environment provides important information for health monitoring and may serve as input into a smart home environment. Visual analysis using cameras can recognise actions in a complex scene, such as someones living room. However, although there the huge potential benefits and importance, specifically for health, cameras are not widely accepted because of privacy concerns. This paper recognises human activities using a sensor that retains privacy. The sensor is not only different by being thermal, but it is also of low resolution: 8x8 pixels. The combination of the thermal imaging, and the low spatial resolution ensures the privacy of individuals. We present an approach to recognise daily activities using this sensor based on a discrete cosine transform. We evaluate the proposed method on a state-of-the-art dataset and experimentally confirm that our approach outperforms the baseline method. We also introduce a new dataset, and evaluate the method on it. Here we show that the sensor is considered better at detecting the occurrence of falls and Activities of Daily Living. Our method achieves an overall accuracy of 87.50% across 7 activities with a fall detection sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 99.21%.

Online advertisements that masquerade as non-advertising content pose numerous risks to users. Such hidden advertisements appear on social media platforms when content creators or "influencers" endorse products and brands in their content. While the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requires content creators to disclose their endorsements in order to prevent deception and harm to users, we do not know whether and how content creators comply with the FTC's guidelines. In this paper, we studied disclosures within affiliate marketing, an endorsement-based advertising strategy used by social media content creators. We examined whether content creators follow the FTC's disclosure guidelines, how they word the disclosures, and whether these disclosures help users identify affiliate marketing content as advertisements. To do so, we first measured the prevalence of and identified the types of disclosures in over 500,000 YouTube videos and 2.1 million Pinterest pins. We then conducted a user study with 1,791 participants to test the efficacy of these disclosures. Our findings reveal that only about 10% of affiliate marketing content on both platforms contains any disclosures at all. Further, users fail to understand shorter, non-explanatory disclosures. We describe the measurements to control the morphology and hence the characteristics of a picosecond laser produced chromium plasma plume upon double-pulse (DP) irradiation compared to its single-pulse (SP) counterpart. DP schemes are realized by employing two geometries wherein the inter-pulse delay ($\tau_p$) in the collinear geometry and the spatial separation ($\Delta x$) are the control parameters for schemes DP$_1$ and DP$_2$ respectively. The aspect ratio (plume length/plume width) decreases upon increasing parameters such as pressure, delay between pulses and the energy of the second pulse in DP1 scheme. Interestingly, the expansion conditions of the plume which occurs at higher pressures for SP scheme could be recreated in DP1 scheme for a lower pressure $\sim$ 10$^{-6}$ Torr. This could be potentially applied for immediate applications such as high harmonic generation and quality thin film production.

We present a detailed experimental and theoretical study on the relativistic non-dipole effects in strong-field atomic ionisation by near-infrared linearly-polarised few-cycle laser pulses in the intensity range 1014 -1015 W/cm2. We record high-resolution photoelectron momentum distributions of argon using a reaction microscope and compare our measurements with a truly ab-initio fully relativistic 3D model based on the time-dependent Dirac equation. We observe counter-intuitive peak shifts of the transverse electron momentum distribution in the direction opposite to that of laser propagation as a function of laser intensity and demonstrate an excellent agreement between experimental results and theoretical predictions., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, Manuscript prepared for submission to Physical Review Letters

Onion services are anonymous network services that are exposed over the Tor network. In contrast to conventional Internet services, onion services are private, generally not indexed by search engines, and use self-certifying domain names that are long and difficult for humans to read. In this paper, we study how people perceive, understand, and use onion services based on data from 17 semi-structured interviews and an online survey of 517 users. We find that users have an incomplete mental model of onion services, use these services for anonymity and have varying trust in onion services in general. Users also have difficulty discovering and tracking onion sites and authenticating them. Finally, users want technical improvements to onion services and better information on how to use them. Our findings suggest various improvements for the security and usability of Tor onion services, including ways to automatically detect phishing of onion services, more clear security indicators, and ways to manage onion domain names that are difficult to remember., Comment: Appeared in USENIX Security Symposium 2018

While disclosures relating to various forms of Internet advertising are well established and follow specific formats, endorsement marketing disclosures are often open-ended in nature and written by individual publishers. Because such marketing often appears as part of publishers' actual content, ensuring that it is adequately disclosed is critical so that end-users can identify it as such. In this paper, we characterize disclosures relating to affiliate marketing---a type of endorsement based marketing---on two popular social media platforms: YouTube & Pinterest. We find that only roughly one-tenth of affiliate content on both platforms contains disclosures. Based on our findings, we make policy recommendations geared towards various stakeholders in the affiliate marketing industry, highlighting how both social media platforms and affiliate companies can enable better disclosure practices.
