Recently, transition-metal-based kagome metals have aroused much research interest as a novel platform to explore exotic topological quantum phenomena. Here we report on the synthesis, structure, and physical properties of a bilayer kagome lattice compound V3Sb2. The polycrystalline V3Sb2 samples were synthesized by conventional solid-state-reaction method in a sealed quartz tube at temperatures below 850 Celsius degree. Measurements of magnetic susceptibility and resistivity revealed consistently a density-wave-like transition at Tdw ~ 160 K with a large thermal hysteresis, even though some sample-dependent behaviors are observed presumably due to the different preparation conditions. Upon cooling through Tdw, no strong anomaly in lattice parameters and no indication of symmetry lowering were detected in powder x-ray diffraction measurements. This transition can be suppressed completely by applying hydrostatic pressures of about 1.8 GPa, around which no sign of superconductivity is observed down to 1.5 K. Specific-heat measurements reveal a relatively large Sommerfeld coefficient {\gamma} = 18.5 mJ/mol-K2, confirming the metallic ground state with moderate electronic correlations. Density functional theory calculations indicate that V3Sb2 shows a non-trivial topological crystalline property. Thus, our study makes V3Sb2 a new candidate of metallic kagome compound to study the interplay between density-wave-order, nontrivial band topology, and possible superconductivity., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures

The successful synthesis of superconducting infinite-layer nickelate thin films with the highest Tc ~ 15 K has reignited great enthusiasms on this family of potential analogue to high-Tc cuprates. Pursuing a higher Tc is always an imperative task in studying a new superconducting material system. Here we report high-quality Pr0.82Sr0.18NiO2 thin films with Tconset ~ 17 K synthesized by carefully tuning the amount of CaH2 in the topological chemical reduction and the effect of pressure on its superconducting properties by measuring electrical resistivity under various pressures in a cubic anvil cell apparatus. We find that the onset temperature of the superconductivity, Tconset, can be enhanced monotonically from ~ 17 K at ambient pressure to ~ 31 K at 12.1 GPa without showing signatures of saturation upon increasing pressure. This encouraging result indicates that the Tc of infinite-layer nickelates superconductors still has room to go higher and it can be further boosted by applying higher pressures or strain engineering in the heterostructure films., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

The interplay between charge-density-wave (CDW) order and superconductivity (SC) in the Kagome metal RbV3Sb5 is studied by tracking the evolutions of their transition temperatures, T* and Tc, as a function of pressure (P) via measurements of resistivity and magnetic susceptibility under various hydrostatic pressures up to ~ 5 GPa. It is found that the CDW order at T* experiences a subtle modification at Pc1 ~ 1.5 GPa before it is completely suppressed around Pc2 ~ 2.4 GPa. Accordingly, the superconducting transition Tc(P) exhibits a shallow M-shaped double superconducting dome with two extrema of Tconset ~ 4.4 K and 3.9 K around Pc1 and Pc2, respectively, leading to a fourfold enhancement of Tc with respect to that at ambient pressure. The constructed T-P phase diagram of RbV3Sb5 resembles that of CsV3Sb5, and shares similar features as many other unconventional superconducting systems with intertwined competing electronic orders. The strong competition between CDW and SC is also evidenced by the broad superconducting transition width in the coexistent region. CsV3Sb5 is a newly discovered Z2 topological kagome metal showing the coexistence of a charge density wave (CDW)-like order at T* = 94 K and superconductivity (SC) at Tc = 2.5 K at ambient pressure. Here we study the interplay between CDW and SC in CsV3Sb5 via measurements of resistivity and magnetic susceptibility under hydrostatic pressures. We find that the CDW transition decreases with pressure and experience a subtle modification at Pc1 = 0.6-0.9 GPa before it vanishes completely at Pc2 = 2 GPa. Correspondingly, Tc(P) displays an unusual M-shaped double dome character with two maxima around Pc1 and Pc2, respectively, leading to a tripled enhancement of Tc to about 8 K at 2 GPa. The obtained temperature-pressure phase diagram resembles those of many unconventional superconductors, illustrating an intimated competition between CDW-like order and SC. The competition is found to be particularly strong for the intermediate pressure range Pc1 <= P <= Pc2 as evidenced by the broad superconducting transition and reduced superconducting volume fraction. This work not only demonstrates the potential to raise the Tc of the V-based kagome superconductors, but also offers more insights into the rich physics related to the electronic correlations in this novel family of topological kagome metals.

MnBi2Te4 has attracted tremendous research interest recently as the first intrinsic antiferromagnetic (AF) topological insulator. It undergoes a long-range AF order at TN = 24 K accompanied with a cusp-like anomaly in the metallic resistivity. Here, we studied the effect of hydrostatic pressure on its electrical transport properties up to 12.5 GPa by using a cubic anvil cell apparatus. We find that TN determined from the resistivity anomaly first increases slightly with pressure and then decreases until vanished completely at ~7 GPa. Intriguingly, its resistivity rho(T) is enhanced gradually by pressure, and evolves from metallic to activated behavior as the AF order is suppressed. From the Hall resistivity measurements, we confirm that the n-type carriers dominate the transport properties and the carrier density is raised by pressure. In addition, the critical magnetic field Hc1 ~3.3 T at 0 GPa for the spin-flop transition to the canted AF state is found to increase to ~ 5 T and 7.5 T at 1 and 3 GPa. High-pressure XRD evidenced no structural transition up to 12.8 GPa. Based on the Hall resistivity results and first-principles calculations, we proposed that the intralayer direct AF interactions are strengthened by pressure and the competition between AF and FM interactions not only prevents long-range magnetic order but also promotes charge carrier localizations through enhance magnetic fluctuations at high pressures., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

We report a high-pressure study on the heavily electron doped Lix(NH3)yFe2Se2 single crystal by using the cubic anvil cell apparatus. The superconducting transition temperature Tc = 44 K at ambient pressure is first suppressed to below 20 K upon increasing pressure to Pc = 2 GPa, above which the pressure dependence of Tc(P) reverses and Tc increases steadily to ca. 55 K at 11 GPa. These results thus evidenced a pressure-induced second high-Tc superconducting (SC-II) phase in Lix(NH3)yFe2Se2 with the highest Tcmax = 55K among the FeSe-based bulk materials. Hall data confirm that in the emergent SC-II phase the dominant electron-type carrier density undergoes a fourfold enhancement and tracks the same trend as Tc(P). Interesting, we find a nearly parallel scaling behavior between Tc and the inverse Hall coefficient for the SC-II phases of both Lix(NH3)yFe2Se2 and (Li,Fe)OHFeSe. The present work demonstrates that high pressure offers a distinctive means to further raising the maximum Tc of heavily electron doped FeSe-based materials by increasing the effective charge carrier concentration via a plausible Fermi surface reconstruction at Pc., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

The pressure-induced reemergence of the second high-Tc superconducting phase (SC-II) in the alkali-metal intercalated AxFe2-ySe2 (A = K, Rb, Cs, Tl) remains an enigma and proper characterizations on the superconducting- and normal-state properties of the SC-II phase were hampered by the intrinsic inhomogeneity and phase separation. To elucidate this intriguing problem, we performed a detailed high-pressure magnetotransport study on the recently discovered (Li1-xFex)OHFe1-ySe single crystals, which have high Tc~40 K and share similar Fermi surface topology as AxFe2-ySe2, but are free from the sample complications. We found that the ambient-pressure Tc~41 K is suppressed gradually to below 2 K upon increasing pressure to Pc ~5 GPa, above which a SC-II phase with higher Tc emerges and the Tc increases progressively to above 50 K up to 12.5 GPa. Interestingly, our high-precision resistivity data enable us to uncover the sharp transition of the normal state from a Fermi liquid for SC-I phase (0 < P < 5 GPa) to a non-Fermi-liquid for SC-II phase (P > 5GPa). In addition, the reemergence of high-Tc SC-II phase is found to accompany with a concurrent enhancement of electron carrier density. Since high-pressure structural study based on the synchrotron X-ray diffraction rules out the structural transition below 10 GPa, the observed SC-II phase with enhanced carrier density should be ascribed to an electronic origin associated with a pressure-induced Fermi surface reconstruction., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

The lasing mechanisms are reviewed of molecules that have demonstrated laser action in the laboratories with laser emissions in the spectral range from 3 to 35 microns. A list of lasants and laser mechanisms are defined. The pumping sources for these lasers are mainly infrared lasers; however, the case in which excitation of bromine atoms at 2.71 microns by a flashlamp as energy input is also included in the review. A conceptual drawing of lasing mechanisms is shown. Three pumping mechanisms are shown, the first being the direct-pumped system in which the lasant molecule absorbs the infrared radiation from pump laser directly, and it is excited into the upper laser level from the ground state. The second system is the indirect-pumped system where the infrared-pump laser first excites an absorbing molecule which stores its vibrational energy. Through collision this energy is transferred to the lasant molecule, populating the upper laser level. In the third system, i.e., in a Br2-CO2 mixture, a flashlamp replaces the infrared laser as the pump source for the absorbing molecule.

Blackbody-pumped solar lasers are proposed to convert sunlight into laser power to provide future space power and propulsion needs. There are two classes of blackbody-pumped lasers. The direct cavity-pumped system in which the lasant molecule is vibrationally excited by the absorption of blackbody radiation and laser, all within the blackbody cavity. The other system is the transfer blackbody-pumped laser in which an absorbing molecule is first excited within the blackbody cavity, then transferred into a laser cavity when an appropriate lasant molecule is mixed. Collisional transfer of vibrational excitation from the absorbing to the lasing molecule results in laser emission. A workshop was held at NASA Langley Research Center to investigate new lasant materials for both of these blackbody systems. Emphasis was placed on the physics of molecular systems which would be appropriate for blackbody-pumped lasers.

A formalism is developed for analysis of performance of direct blackbody and blackbody transfer lasers. Application to the CO/CO2 system is made. Three cases are treated: (1) Photoexcited triatomic laser; (2) Photoexcited diatomic-triatomic laser; and (3) Photoexcited diatomic mixing triatomic laser. Each is treated in a transverse flow geometry as illustrated. It is seen from the analysis that the mixing laser configuration has many advantages in that CO can achieve high excitation densities so that high power can be achieved on a relatively small scale.

Spectral scans of the Mg II k line in Beta Per were obtained with Copernicus during two primary eclipses. A brief description of observation in a short frame mode is given. The observed data are compared with computed line profiles based on the eclipse geometry of spherical stars. It is shown that a nonuniform circumstellar envelope, or cloud, probably is present. In one scan, a red-shifted line of P Cygni-type profile appeared, indicating the occurrence of an unusual event in the close binary system.

Results of three-color photoelectric observations of CW Eridani are presented which were made with a 30-inch telescope over the three-year period from 1970 to 1973. The times of minima are computed, solutions of the light curves are obtained, and theoretical light curves are computed from the solutions. The period is determined to be 2.72837 days, and the orbital and photoelectric elements are derived from solutions based on the idealized Russell model.

A brief description is given to the L-alpha line based on observations made by the Copernicus satellite. No emission was detected. No significant differences were found between observations outside eclipse and those during primary minimum. Some of the blended lines in this spectral region are identified.

Additional absorption features in the red wings of the Mg II resonance lines near 2800 A are found in observations of Algol made from the Copernicus satellite. The absorption features were clearly seen only during a part of the primary eclipse, in the phase interval 0.90-0.03. The observations are interpreted as being produced by a stream of matter flowing from Algol B in the direction of Algol A. The measured Doppler shifts of the features give the value of 150 km/s as the characteristic velocity of matter in the stream. The mass transfer connected with the stream is estimated to be of the order of 10 to the -13th power solar mass per year.

Photometric light-curve data obtained during Copernicus satellite observations of Beta Persei in the Balmer continuum at 3428 A are analyzed and reduced. A small but significant fluctuation with a period of very nearly 0.069167 day in the photometric counts is tentatively attributed to a small perturbation in spacecraft attitude introduced each time the satellite passes from daylight into darkness. The light curve is intensity-rectified, phase-rectified, and solved on the assumption that the limb darkening follows the linear cosine law. The resulting distributions of luminosity among the three components of Beta Persei are plotted, and it is shown that the effective temperature of Algol B may be higher than 5000 K.

Copernicus satellite observations have been used to study changes in the Mg II lines in the neighborhood of 2800 A in Algol during eclipse. The resonance lines near 2800 A show doubling near the bottom of primary eclipse. A possible explanation is that emission from component B fills the line centers; the absolute magnitude thus derived for component B agrees with other values in the literature.

Four W Ursae Majoris-type binaries were investigated using the simple model of blackbody solid spheres. Numerical computations were carried out for the rotationally broadened profiles of spectral lines Sr II (4077.7) and Ca I (4226.7) and the mean radial velocities. These mean velocities at different phases outside eclipses were compared with sinusoidal values of the radial velocity curve for point masses. Within the present accuracy of observations, the reflection effect is small and may be neglected in the analysis of radial velocity curves.
