Search

New development approaches, including launch vehicles and advances in sensors, computing, and software, have lowered the cost of entry into space, and have enabled a revolution in low-cost, high-risk Small Satellite (SmallSat) missions. To bring about a similar transformation in larger space telescopes, it is necessary to reconsider the full paradigm of space observatories. Here we will review the history of space telescope development and cost drivers, and describe an example conceptual design for a low cost 6.5 m optical telescope to enable new science when operated in space at room temperature. It uses a monolithic primary mirror of borosilicate glass, drawing on lessons and tools from decades of experience with ground-based observatories and instruments, as well as flagship space missions. It takes advantage, as do large launch vehicles, of increased computing power and space-worthy commercial electronics in low-cost active predictive control systems to maintain stability. From 2018 to 2020, the Scientific Balloon Roadmap Program Analysis Group (Balloon Roadmap PAG) served as an community-based, interdisciplinary forum for soliciting and coordinating community analysis and input in support of the NASA Scientific Balloon Program. The Balloon Roadmap PAG was tasked with articulating and prioritizing the key science drivers and needed capabilities of the Balloon Program for the next decade. Additionally, the Balloon Roadmap PAG was asked to evaluate the potential for achieving science goals and maturing technologies of the Science Mission Directorate, evaluate the Balloon Program goals towards community outreach, and asses commercial balloon launch opportunities. The Coronagraphic Debris Exoplanet Exploring Payload (CDEEP) is a Small-Sat mission concept for high contrast imaging of circumstellar disks. CDEEP is designed to observe disks in scattered light at visible wavelengths at a raw contrast level of 10^-7 per resolution element (10^-8 with post processing). This exceptional sensitivity will allow the imaging of transport dominated debris disks, quantifying the albedo, composition, and morphology of these low-surface brightness disks. CDEEP combines an off-axis telescope, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) deformable mirror, and a vector vortex coronagraph (VVC). This system will require rigorous testing and characterization in a space environment. Project Blue is designed to deliver a small coronagraphic space telescope mission to low-Earth orbit capable of detecting an Earth-like planet in the habitable zones of the Sun-like stars Alpha Centauri A and B within the next 4 years within a Mission of Opportunity budget envelope. A NASA sounding rocket for high-contrast imaging with a visible nulling coronagraph, the PICTURE payload, has made two suborbital attempts to observe the warm dust disk inferred around Epsilon Eridani. The first flight in 2011 demonstrated a 5 milliarcsecond fine pointing system in space. The reduced flight data from the second launch, on 25 November 2015, presented herein, demonstrate active sensing of wavefront phase in space. Despite several anomalies in flight, post-facto reduction phase stepping interferometer data provides insight into the wavefront sensing precision and the system stability for a portion of the pupil. These measurements show the actuation of a 32$\times$32-actuator microelectromechanical system deformable mirror. The wavefront sensor reached a median precision of 1.4 nanometers per pixel, with 95% of samples between 0.8 and 12.0 nanometers per pixel. Emission profiles of the resonantly scattered OII~83.4~nm triplet can in principle be used to estimate \(\mathrm{O}^+\) density profiles in the F2 region of the ionosphere. Given the emission source profile, solution of this inverse problem is possible, but requires significant computation. The traditional Feautrier solution to the radiative transfer problem requires many iterations to converge, making it time-consuming to compute. A Markov chain approach to the problem produces similar results by directly constructing a matrix that maps the source emission rate to an effective emission rate which includes scattering to all orders. The Markov chain approach presented here yields faster results and therefore can be used to perform the \(\mathrm{O}^+\) density retrieval with higher resolution than would otherwise be possible.

We test the utility of the OII 83.4 nm emission feature as a measure of ionospheric parameters. Observed with the Remote Atmospheric and Ionospheric Detection System (RAIDS) Extreme Ultraviolet Spectrograph on the International Space Station (ISS), limb profiles of 83.4 nm emissions are compared to predicted dayglow emission profiles from a theoretical model incorporating ground-based electron density profiles measured by the Millstone Hill radar and parameterized by a best-fit Chapman-{\alpha} function. Observations and models are compared for periods of conjunction between Millstone Hill and the RAIDS fields-of-view. These RAIDS observations show distinct differences in topside morphology between two days, 15 January and 10 March 2010, closely matching the forward model morphology and demonstrating that 83.4 nm emission is sensitive to changes in the ionospheric density profile from the 340 km altitude of the ISS during solar minimum. We find no significant difference between 83.4 nm emission profiles modeled assuming a constant scale height Chapman-{\alpha} best-fit to the ISR measurements and those assuming varying scale height.

Explorers have made breakthroughs in many fields of astrophysics. The science from both these missions contributed to three Nobel Prizes - Giacconi (2002), Mather, and Smoot (2006). Explorers have: marked the definitive beginning of precision cosmology, discovered that short gamma-ray bursts are caused by compact star mergers and have measured metalicity to redshifts z>6. NASA Explorers do cutting-edge science that cannot be done by facility-class instruments. The Explorer program provides a rapid response to changing science and technology, to enable cutting-edge science at moderate cost. Explorers also enable innovation, and engage & train scientists, managers and engineers, adding human capital to NASA and the nation. The astrophysics Explorer launch rate now being achieved is 1 per 3 years, and budget projections are in the $150M/year range for the next five years. A newly Vigorous Explorer Program should be created to: 1. Reach the long-stated goal of annual astrophysics launches; 2. Find additional launch options for Explorers and actively encourage cost savings in launchers and spacecraft, such as new commercial vehicles and innovative partnerships. 3. Mitigate risk via stronger technical development and sub-orbital programs, and through longer, more thorough, Phase A programs, potentially reducing the need for a 30% contingency; 4. Strive to protect the funding for missions that have reached Phase B, to prevent significant launch slips and cancellations, with a goal of 4 to 5 years from Phase B to launch; 5. Review the project management procedures and requirements to seek cost reductions, including the risk management strategy and the review and reporting process; 6. Exo-C is NASAs first community study of a modest aperture space telescope designed for high contrast observations of exoplanetary systems. The mission will be capable of taking optical spectra of nearby exoplanets in reflected light, discovering previously undetected planets, and imaging structure in a large sample of circumstellar disks. It will obtain unique science results on planets down to super-Earth sizes and serve as a technology pathfinder toward an eventual flagship-class mission to find and characterize habitable Earth-like exoplanets. We present the mission/payload design and highlight steps to reduce mission cost/risk relative to previous mission concepts. Key elements are an unobscured telescope aperture, an internal coronagraph with deformable mirrors for precise wavefront control, and an orbit and observatory design chosen for high thermal stability. Exo-C has a similar telescope aperture, orbit, lifetime, and spacecraft bus requirements to the highly successful Kepler mission (which is our cost reference). The needed technology development is on-course for a possible mission start in 2017. This paper summarizes the study final report completed in January 2015. During 2015 NASA will make a decision on its potential development.

Zodiac II is a proposed balloon-borne science investigation of debris disks around nearby stars. Debris disks are analogs of the Asteroid Belt (mainly rocky) and Kuiper Belt (mainly icy) in our Solar System. Zodiac II will measure the size, shape, brightness, and color of a statistically significant sample of disks. These measurements will enable us to probe these fundamental questions: what do debris disks tell us about the evolution of planetary systems; how are debris disks produced; how are debris disks shaped by planets; what materials are debris disks made of; how much dust do debris disks make as they grind down; and how long do debris disks live? In addition, Zodiac II will observe hot, young exoplanets as targets of opportunity. The Zodiac II instrument is a 1.1-m diameter SiC (Silicone carbide) telescope and an imaging coronagraph on a gondola carried by a stratospheric balloon. Its data product is a set of images of each targeted debris disk in four broad visible-wavelength bands. Zodiac II will address its science questions by taking high-resolution, multi-wavelength images of the debris disks around tens of nearby stars. Mid-latitude flights are considered: overnight test flights in the US followed by half-global flights in the Southern Hemisphere. These longer flights are required to fully explore the set of known debris disks accessible only to Zodiac II. On these targets, it will be 100 times more sensitive than the Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys (HST/ACS); no existing telescope can match the Zodiac II contrast and resolution performance. A second objective of Zodiac II is to use the near-space environment to raise the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of SiC mirrors, internal coronagraphs, deformable mirrors, and wavefront sensing and control, all potentially needed for a future space-based telescope for high-contrast exoplanet imaging.

We carried out high-cadence (5 min) and high-spatial resolution (2deg magnetic latitude) observations of daytime OI 630.0 nm airglow emission brightness from a low-latitude station to understand the behavior of neutral dynamics in the daytime. The results indicate that the wave periodicities of 12.20 min, and 2 h exist over a wide spatial range of around 8deg-12deg magnetic latitudes. The 20.80 min periodicities in the dayglow seem to appear more often in the measurements closer to the magnetic equator and not at latitudes farther away. Further, periodicities in that range are found to be frequent in the variations of the equatorial electrojet (EEJ) strength as well. We show that wave periodicities due to the neutral dynamics, at least until around 8deg magnetic latitude, are influenced by those that affect the EEJ strength variation as well. Furthermore, the average daily OI 630.0 nm emission brightness over 3 months varied in consonance with that of the sunspot numbers indicating a strong solar influence on the magnitudes of dayglow emissions.

Particle energies and fluxes have predominantly been measured from instruments onboard satellites. In this study, we use daytime ground-based oxygen redline emission measurements, along with the ionospheric electron density, and electron temperature profiles measured from the incoherent scatter radar, and a physics-based modeling approach to derive the energy and flux of particles incident over Boston during the storm of 30 October 2003. We find that the characteristic energy and the associated flux vary between 0.07.5.7 keV and 0.5.130 mW/sq m, respectively, during the intense magnetic disturbance that brought aurora to midlatitudes. Such an approach not only offers another method to estimate the incident particle energies and fluxes but also enhances our understanding on the channels of energy deposition in the upper atmospheric region, especially during magnetic disturbances, about which database is poor.

We present a striking event that shows a prompt effect of an X-class solar flare (X6.2/3B) in the neutral optical dayglow emissions. This flare occurred on 13 December 2001 at 1424 UT and peaked at 1430 UT. The peak-to pre-flare X-ray intensity ratio as observed by GOES-10 was greater than 300 and the EUV flux observed by SEM/SOHO was greater by around 60%. As a response to this flare, the daytime redline (OI 630 nm) column integrated emission intensity measured from Carmen Alto (23.16degS, 70.66degW), in Chile, showed a prompt increase of around 50%. Our results show that this prompt enhancement in the thermospheric dayglow seems to be caused mainly due to an increase in photoelectrons due to a sudden increase in the solar EUV flux associated with this flare.

We report progress on a nulling coronagraph intended for direct imaging of extrasolar planets. White light is suppressed in an interferometer, and phase errors are measured by a second interferometer. A 1020-pixel MEMS deformable mirror in the first interferometer adjusts the path length across the pupil. A feedback control system reduces deflections of the deformable mirror to order of 1 nm rms.

This slide presentation reviews a method for planet finding using microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) Adaptive Optics (AO). The use of a deformable mirror (DM) is described as a part of the instrument that was designed with a nulling interferometer. The strategy that is used is described in detail.

Earth-based, fully automatic "robotic" telescopes have been in routine operation for a number of years. As their number grows and their distribution becomes global, increasing attention is being given to forming networks of various sorts that will allow them, as a group, to make observations 24 hours a day in both hemispheres. We have suggested that telescopes based in space be part of this network. We further suggested that any telescope on this network be capable of asking, almost in real time, that other robotic telescopes perform support observations for them. When a target of opportunity required support observations, the system would determine which telescope(s) in the network would be most appropriate to make the observations and formulate a request to do so. Because the network would be comprised of telescopes located in widely distributed regions, this system would guarantee continuity of observations This report summarizes our efforts under this contract. We proposed to develop a set of data collection and display tools to aid simultaneous observation of astronomical targets from a number of observing sites. We planned to demonstrate the usefulness of this toolset for simultaneous multi-site observation of astronomical targets. Possible candidates or the proposed demonstration included the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE), International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE), and ALEXIS, sounding rocket experiments. Ground-based observatories operated by the University of California, Berkeley, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and Fairborn Observatory in Mesa, Arizona were to be used to demonstrate the proposed concept. Although the demonstration was to have involved astronomical investigations, the tools were to have been applicable to a large number of scientific disciplines. The software tools and systems developed as a result of the work were to have been made available to the scientific community.

The Berkeley extreme-ultraviolet airglow rocket spectrometer (BEARS) made spectroscopic measurements of far and extreme UV, atomic oxygen emissions from a Black Brandt XII (12.041 WT) sounding rocket launched from Wallops Island, Virginia, on September 30, 1988. BEARS' primary instrument, a near-normal Rowland mount spectrometer, measured several atomix oxygen and molecular nitrogen dayglow features at high spectral resolution (1.5 A): O I (989, 1027, 1304, and 1356 A); and N2 Lyman-Birge-Hopfield (4, 0) and (3, 0) bands at 1325 and 1354 A. The instrument collected over 800 s of data spanning altitudes of 150 - 963 km with look directions between 95 deg and 125 deg from zenith. We have analyzed the data using electrons and radiative transport models in a forward modeling approach. The model and data are generally in good agreement. However, there are some discrepancies, which are discussed in terms of remote sensing capabilities and improvements to the models.

A sounding rocket measurement of the ultraviolet, atomic oxygen dayglow reveals an excess of emission compared to standard thermospheric model calculations at exospheric altitudes. We explore two explanations for this discrepancy: a breakdown of the radiative transfer model due to nonlocal thermal equilibrium (non-LTE) conditions above the exobase and a hot atomic oxygen geocorona. In particular, the effects of non-LTE on the 3P2, 1, 0 sublevel populations are modeled, and a hot O component in the upper thermosphere and lower exosphere is added to investigate the effects on the modeled emissions. For both cases, the data are reanalyzed and compared with the results using a standard LTE model. A hot O geocorona having a peak density of 10(exp 6)/cc at 550 km and a temperature of 4000 K is consistent with the data and appears to be the most reasonable explanation of the high-altitude enhanced emissions observed in the data.

The electron impact excitation cross section for the O I (1304 A) emission is enhanced in the terrestrial thermosphere owing to an optically thick cascade mechanism. Values for the contribution of the cascade have been calculated and deduced from measured 1304-A airglow emissions to between o and 200%. We have developed a model to calculate a large portion of the optically thick cascade contribution, including contributions from the radiative entrapment of the O I (1040, 1027, and 989 A) lines. High-resolution spectroscopic data from a sounding rocket experiment are analyzed using this model. The optically thick cascade contribution for the three lower lying states was evaluated to be 24.5% and compares well with recent calculations. The data, however, support a total contribution of 40%. The 15.5% difference is likely due to the contribution from higher Rydberg states.

A crude estimate for the current degassing rate of He-4 on of 2.2 x 10 exp 5/sq cm/s is obtained by scaling from the amounts of helium and argon on earth. Nonthermal escape processes of helium on Mars are discussed and a nonthermal helium escape rate is calculated for each process. The helium mixing ratio in the lower Martian atmospheres and the intensity of its airglow at 584 A are calculated.

The Far Ultraviolet Space Telescope ('FAUST') furnishes precise photometry for extended astronomical objects in the 1400-1800 A wavelength interval, and constitutes a part of the Atlas-1 mission. On several occasions during this flight, FAUST was turned toward the earth in order to obtain terrestrial nightglow, auroral and Shuttleglow emissions. It is found that auroral precipitation activity dominates in the high magnetic latitude; outside it, diffuse emission is seen to slowly vary over the nightside.

A network of ground and space based telescopes can provide continuous observation of astronomical objects. In a 'Target of Opportunity' scenario triggered by the system, any telescope on the network may request supporting observations. We propose to develop a set of data collection and display tools to support these observations. We plan to demonstrate the usefulness of this toolset for simultaneous multi-site observations of astronomical targets. Possible candidates for the proposed demonstration include the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer, International Ultraviolet Explorer, ALEXIS, and sounding rocket experiments. We are currently developing an instrument free from optical components to measure the full-disk solar spectrum in the extreme ultraviolet regime covering wavelengths from 75-500 A. The instrument, which will be launched aboard a NASA Black Brant sounding rocket in September 1992, consists of a windowless noble gas ionization cell followed by a toroidal electrostatic analyzer to spatially disperse photoelectrons as a function of their energies. A microchannel plate based position sensitive detector will be used to detect individual electrons, indirectly returning the solar EUV spectrum.

We review the current capabilities of high-resolution, spectroscopic, space-borne instrumentation available for both solar and stellar observations in the EUV and soft X-ray wavelength regimes, and describe the basic design of a compact, all-reflection interferometer based on the spatial heterodyne technique; this is capable of producing a resolving power (lambda/Delta-lambda) of about 20,000 in the 100-200 A region using presently available multilayer optical components. Such an instrument can be readily constructed with existing technology. Due to its small size and lack of moving parts, it is ideally suited to spaceborne applications. Based on best estimates of the efficiency of this instrument at soft X-ray wavelengths, we review the possible use of this high-resolution interferometer in obtaining high-resolution full-disk spectroscopy of the sun. We also discuss its possible use for observations of diffuse sources such as the EUV interstellar background radiation.

We describe an instrument package to remotely measure thermospheric, exospheric, and plasmaspheric structure and composition. This instrument was flown aboard the second test flight of the Black Brant XII sounding rocket on December 5, 1989, which attained an apogee of 1460 km. The experiment package consisted of a spectrophotometer to measure He I 584 A, O II 834 A, O I 989 A, hydrogen Lyman beta (1025 A), hydrogen Lyman alpha (1216 A), and O I 1304 A transitions, and a photometer to measure the He II 304 A emission. The optical design of the spectrophotometer was identical to that of the Berkeley Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) Airglow Rocket Spectrometer payload, flown on September 30, 1988 aboard the maiden flight of the Black Brant XII rocket. We present the initial data analysis and describe directions we will go toward the completion of our study.

We have constructed a high resolution imaging spectrograph for use as a payload in a sounding rocket experiment. The spectrograph employs a modified Ebert-Fastie design using a LiF predispersing prism and a replica of the E1 echelle grating developed for the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. The spectrograph is used as a focal plane instrument of the Jupiter Telescope, a Cassegrain telescope constructed exclusively for use as a sounding rocket payload. The telescope and spectrograph were launched from the White Sands Missile Range on May 4, 1991 to observe the H Ly-alpha line profile spatially resolved across the disk of Jupiter in the north-south and east-west directions, and to measure the H Ly-alpha emission line profile from interplanetary hydrogen associated with the local interstellar medium.

We have designed a multiple-layer coating which selectively reflects 834 A radiation and suppresses 1025 A and 1216 A radiation. The structure of the coating material consists of a very thin (50-150 A) metal (nickel) layer, on top of a semitransparent dielectric material (magnesium fluoride), over an aluminum substrate. Three such coatings were produced at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center using an existing coating facility which is not optimized for thin coatings. In spite of such fabrication difficulties, we have obtained encouraging results.

Ultrahigh resolution line studies can deepen insight into the excitation processes and structures of the upper atmosphere; attention is presently given to the possibility of a study of terrestrial atomic oxygen in the thermosphere through measurements of the O I 1304 A solar and terrestrial airglow emissions from a sounding rocket. These line profile studies of the airglow yield a relative contribution of the two main excitation mechanisms (photoelectron impact and solar-resonance scattering), as well as a verification of cross section and branching ratios.

We describe the WIDe-angle GEocoronal Telescope, or WIDGET. The telescope is designed to image the cold plasma constituent of the magnetosphere, the plasmasphere, by imaging the He II 304 A emission. It utilizes a spherical normal incidence f/2 mirror with a microchannel plate imaging detector positioned near the focal point of the mirror. The instrument has a 30-deg field of view with a .5-1-deg angular resolution. The mirror has a multilayer coating which, combined with an Al/C filter and the detector response, provides a peak sensitivity of approximately 0.5 ct/sec/Rayleigh/bin at 304 A with a bandpass of about 60 A. The instrument will be flown on a sounding rocket in the Fall of 1992 as a test of its capabilities. It can easily be adapted to different wavelengths (584, 834, and 1216 A) using suitable mirror coatings and filters. In this way, a series of WIDGETs could image different aspects of the inner magnetosphere simultaneously, thus providing a more unified picture of this complex region.

We propose to develop a set of data collection and display tools to support these observations. We plan to demonstrate the usefulness of this tool set for simultaneous multi-site observations of astronomical targets. Possible candidates for the proposed demonstration include the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer, International Ultraviolet Explorer, ALEXIS, and sounding rocket experiments. Ground based observations operated by the University of California, Berkeley; the Jet Propulsion Laboratory; and Fairborn Observatory, Mesa, Arizona will be used to demonstrate the proposed concept. Although the demonstration will involve astronomical investigations, these tools will be applicable to a large number of scientific disciplines. The software tools and systems developed as a result of our work will be made available to the scientific community.

Requirements for spaceflight optical instruments usually dictate that for the structures be rigid, lightweight, and thermally stable. In addition, for interferometric far ultraviolet (FUV) spectrometers, the requirements for torsional deflection are more severe than with conventional spectrometers. To meet the challenge for rigid and lightweight optical instruments, this paper explores the design of a high-stiffness structure for the support of an FUV spatial heterodyne interferometer where the torsional deflection of the instrument is on the order of 10 arc seconds. The structure is based on use of a thin, hollow section beam with weight-relieving between optical elements. The design also uses a modular and self-contained positioning mechanism that is removed after final optical alignment. Several specific material properties are presented as criteria for material selection. The parameters which affect the particular design requirements are identified with respect to the desired material properties and physical design features. Although large thin sections are susceptible to thermal gradients, this could be minimized by a trade-off for weight, where adequate margin exists. This paper describes the preliminary design for the structure and presents an analysis to verify compliance with the requirements.

A need has arisen for efficient, blazed, symmetric gratings for use as beam splitters in far and extreme ultraviolet interferometers. In particular, the development of an all-reflection, far ultraviolet spatial heterodyne interferometer can benefit tremendously from such a grating. To fulfill this need, we have manufactured a mechanically ruled grating with a V-groove profile blazed for H Lyman-alpha at 1216 A. We present the grating performance at Lyman-alpha in the context of its application to the spatial heterodyne interferometer.

Spaceflight optical instruments have two conflicting requirements. They need to be both rigid and lightweight. In addition, for interferometric far ultraviolet spectrometers, the requirements for precision positioning are more severe than for conventional spectrometers. To meet the challenge of lightweight optical instruments, a modular adjustment mechanism was developed to position two orthogonal axes of a universal three-axis gimbal support system with a positioning accuracy on the order of 10 arc seconds. The mechanism was designed as a self-contained assembly which can be removed after final alignment of a spacebound optical instrument to reduce its in-flight mass. To demonstrate the concept, a number of these assemblies were made and mounted on two of the positioning axes of a far ultraviolet spatial heterodyne interferometer. A shaft clamp was used on each positioning axis to retain the adjusted position. This paper describes the design of the mechanism and presents optical test results.

An all-reflection spatial heterodyne spectrometer (SHS) has been recently developed. The advantages over conventional high-resolution grating spectrometers are that the SHS requires no mechanical scanning, a self-compensating optical design permits easy alignment, and it is much smaller than other spectrometers of comparable resolution. Since all beam-splits and recombinations occur by reflection off of a diffraction grating, the interferometer is capable of operating well into the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and possibly into the soft X-ray region. A description of the design and the characteristics of the instrument is presented. Also, test results, including sample interferograms as well as their Fourier-transformed spectra, at both visible and UV wavelengths are shown. Finally, we report on future developments and possible applications.

We discuss a high resolution microchannel plate (MCP) imaging detector to be used in measurements of Doppler-shifted hydrogen Lyman-alpha line emission from Jupiter and the interplanetary medium. The detector is housed in a vacuum-tight stainless steel cylinder (to provide shielding from magnetic fields) with a MgF2 window. Operating at nominal voltage, the four plate configuration provides a gain of 1.2 x 10 exp 7 electrons per incident photon. The wedge-and-strip anode has two-dimensional imaging capabilities, with a resolution of 40 microns FWHM over a one centimeter diameter area. The detector has a high quantum efficiency while retaining a low background rate. A KBr photocathode is used to enhance the quantum efficiency of the bare MCPs to a value of 35 percent at Lyman-alpha.

The Berkeley Extreme-ultraviolet Airglow Rocket Spectrometer (BEARS), a multiinstrument sounding rocket payload, made comprehensive measurements of the earth's dayglow. The primary instruments consisted of two near-normal Rowland mount spectrometers: one channel to measure several atomic oxygen features at high spectral resolution (about 1.5 A) in the band passes 980-1040 and 1300-1360 A, and the other to measure EUV dayglow and the solar EUV simultaneously in a much broader bandpass (250-1150 A) at moderate resolution (about 10 A). The payload also included a hydrogen Lyman-alpha photometer to monitor the solar irradiance and goecoronal emissions. The instrument was calibrated at the EUV calibration facility at the University of California at Berkeley, and was subsequently launched successfully on September 30, 1988 aboard a four-stage experimental sounding rocket, Black Brant XII flight 12.041 WT. The calibration procedure and resulting data are presented.

The development of telescience methodologies for teledesign, teleoperation, and teleanalysis, and the possible verification of these concepts using the Extreme UV Explorer (EUVE) are discussed. The EUVE is a satellite payload scheduled for launch in 1991. The use of the Browse data base system (Star et al., 1987) is reviewed and its suitability for astronomy applications is evaluated. The possibility of adopting the Browse system for EUVE data analysis is considered.

It is shown how the contradictory goals of low-cost and fast data turnaround characterizing the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) mission can be achieved via the early use of telescience style transparent tools and simulations. The use of transparent tools reduces the parallel development of capability while ensuring that valuable prelaunch experience is not lost in the operations phase. Efforts made to upgrade the 'EUVE electronics' simulator are described.
