Search

Dirac showed that the existence of one magnetic pole in the universe could offer an explanation of the discrete nature of the electric charge. Magnetic poles appear naturally in most grand unified theories. Their discovery would be of greatest importance for particle physics and cosmology. The intense experimental search carried thus far has not met with success. In order to understand this lack of success we studied monopolium a monopole anti-monopole bound state with properties very different from monopoles in which monopoles could be hiding. In here, we propose another mechanism, namely that magnetic poles bind deeply with some neutral states hiding in this way some of the properties of the free monopoles. We study different scenarios of these systems and analyze their detectability. In particular, one scenario is very interesting because it leads to a light state, an analog of an electron with magnetic instead of electric charge, which we call magnetron., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

The well-known geometric phase present in the quantum adiabatic evolution discovered by Berry many years ago has its analogue, the Hannay phase, in the classical domain.We calculate the Berry phase with examples for quantum hermitian and non-hermitian $PT$-symmetric Hamiltonians and compare with the Hannay phase in their classical equivalents.We use the analogy to propose resonant electric circuits which reproduce the theoretical solutions in simulated laboratory experiments., Comment: 13 pages and 4 figures

An electric network whose dynamics is entirely equivalent to the Foucault pendulum is presented. This circuit allows one to measure in a simulation of the circuit, and eventually in a built circuit in the laboratory, the Hannay geometric phase. This phase corresponds, via the equivalence discussed in the text, exactly to the latitude effect on the rotation of the oscillation plane of the pendulum. We study the detection of particles with magnetic moment and no charge by using coils and solenoids. The detector uses the Faraday-Lenz law to create a current whose energy is measured. Our development can be applied to any particle with magnetic moment. The neutron is ideal to show our detector scheme for particles with long lifetimes and the result is encouraging. However, our interest lies in the detection of monopolium states which decays much faster than neutrons. The accelerator scenario with a relatively low monopole mass $\sim 1000$ GeV requires the generalization of the scheme to finite lifetimes. We use two descriptions, which we have called Dirac and Schwinger, (also $\beta$-coupling), schemes, in our study. The theoretical behavior of excited monopolia in coils teaches us many of their properties. However, their small production cross sections, given the achievable LHC luminosities, makes detection using coils difficult. Therefore, we generalize the discussion to cosmological heavy monopolium. Our scheme becomes useful for those and supplements detectors like MoEDAL and MAPP in distinguishing monopolia from other long lived particles., Comment: 22 pages and 19 figures

The Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) experiment has observed two air shower events with energy $\sim 500~{\rm PeV}$ emerging from the Earth with exit angles $\sim 30^\circ$ above the horizon. As was immediately noted by the ANITA Collaboration, these events (in principle) could originate in the atmospheric decay of an upgoing $\tau$-lepton produced through a charged current interaction of a $\nu_\tau$ inside the Earth. However, the relatively steep arrival angles of these perplexing events create tension with the standard model (SM) neutrino-nucleon interaction cross section. Deepening the conundrum, the IceCube neutrino telescope and the Pierre Auger Observatory with substantially larger exposures to cosmic $\nu_\tau$'s in this energy range have not observed any events. This lack of observation implies that the messenger particle (MP) giving rise to ANITA events must produce an air shower event rate at least a factor of 40 larger than that produced by a flux of $\tau$-neutrinos to avoid conflicts with the upper limits reported by the IceCube and the Pierre Auger collaborations. In addition, the sensitivity of ANITA to MP-induced events must be comparable to or larger than those of IceCube and Auger to avoid conflict with the non-observation of any signal at these facilities. Beyond SM interpretations of ANITA events can be classified according to whether the MPs: (i) live inside the Earth, (ii) originate in neutrino-nucleon collisions inside the Earth, (iii) come from cosmological distances. The results of high energy simulated experiments where a given hadronic particle impacts on a given target are statistically analyzed. The energy range of the projectiles goes from below the LHC scale up to the highest cosmic ray energies. This study was carried out by using the pre- and post-LHC versions of the hadronic interaction models QGSJET, EPOS and SIBYLL. Our analysis indicates that the post-LHC models present smaller differences in various quantities that characterize the secondary particles produced after the hadronic collisions, in comparison with the corresponding differences that are found comparing the respective old (pre-LHC) versions of the hadronic models. However, it is also found that there exist some discrepancies among models that persist even at the LHC energy scale, that call for further theoretical investigation. An additional analysis of the impact that different modeling of hadronic collisions has on air shower development is also included. It consists of a detailed study of the impact of the different pre- and post-LHC versions of the hadronic models considered, for relevant observables like the muon production depth distribution.

The complex phase present in CP-violating systems such as neutral kaons is shown to be of geometrical origin. It is also concluded that the complex phase of the Cabibbo--Kobayashi--Maskawa (CKM) matrix is a Berry-like phase., Comment: 7 pages and 1 figure

The equivalence between the $\mathrm{Schr\ddot{o}dinger}$ dynamics of a quantum system with a finite number of basis states and a classical dynamics is realized in terms of electric networks. The isomorphism that connects in a univocal way both dynamical systems was applied to the case of neutral mesons, kaons in particular, and the class of electric networks univocally related to the quantum system was analyzed. Moreover, under $CPT$ invariance, the relevant $\epsilon$ parameter that measures $CP$ violation in the kaon system is reinterpreted in terms of network parameters. All these results were explicitly shown by means of both a numerical simulation of the implied networks and by constructing the corresponding circuits.

We find that the ratio r_{mu e} of the muon to the electromagnetic component of an extended air shower at the ground level provides an indirect measure of the depth X_{max} of the shower maximum. This result, obtained with the air-shower code AIRES, is independent of the hadronic model used in the simulation. We show that the value of r_{mu e} in a particular shower discriminates its proton or iron nature with a 98% efficiency. We also show that the eventual production of forward heavy quarks inside the shower may introduce anomalous values of r_{mu e} in isolated events., Comment: 10 pages, version to appear in Astroparticle Physics

We study nuclear effects on the deuteron in the deep inelastic regime using the newest available data analyzing their $Q^2$ dependence. We conclude that precise EMC ratios for large $Q^2$ (> 30, GeV$^2$) cannot be obtained without considering these nuclear effects. For this purpose we use a scheme which parametrizes these effects in a simple manner and compare our results with other recent proposals., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We investigate the role of heavy quarks in the production of light flavored hadrons and in the determination of the corresponding non perturbative hadronization probabilities. We define a general mass variable flavor number scheme for fragmentation functions that accounts for heavy quark mass effects, and perform a global QCD analysis to an up-to-date data set including very precise Belle and BaBar results. We show that the mass dependent picture provides a much more accurate and consistent description of data., Comment: 5 pages, 3 eps figures

The total photoproduction cross section at ultra-high energies is obtained using a model based on QCD minijets and soft-gluon resummation and the ansatz that infrared gluons limit the rise of total cross sections. This cross section is introduced into the Monte Carlo system AIRES to simulate extended air-showers initiated by cosmic ray photons. The impact of the new photoproduction cross section on common shower observables, especially those related to muon production, is compared with previous results., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures, to be published in Physical Review D

The behavior of the nucleon structure functions in lepton nuclei deep inelastic scattering, both polarized and unpolarized, due to nuclear structure effects is reanalyzed. The study is performed in two schemes: an x-rescaling approach, and one in which there is an increase of sea quark components in the in medium nucleon, related to the low energy N-N interaction. In view of a recent interesting experimental proposal to study the behavior of the proton spin structure functions in nuclei we proceed to compare these approaches in an effort to enlighten the possible phenomenological interest of such difficult experiment., Comment: 11 pages and 5 figures

Very energetic charm and bottom hadrons may be produced in the upper atmosphere when a primary cosmic ray or the leading hadron in an extensive air shower collide with a nucleon. At $E\approx 10^8$ GeV their decay length becomes of the order of 10 km, implying that they tend to interact in the air instead of decaying. Since the inelasticity in these collisions is much smaller than the one in proton and pion collisions, there could be rare events where a heavy-hadron component transports a significant amount of energy deep into the atmosphere. We have developed a module for the detailed simulation of these processes and have included it in a new version of the air shower simulator AIRES. We study the frequency, the energy distribution and the depth of charm and bottom production, as well as the depth and the energy distribution of these quarks when they decay. As an illustration, we consider the production and decay of tau leptons (from $D_s$ decays) and the lepton flux at PeV energies from a 30 EeV proton primary. The proper inclusion of charm and bottom hadrons in AIRES opens the possibility to search for air-shower observables that are sensitive to heavy quark effects., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics

The construction of a gauge field theory for elementary particles usually starts by promoting global invariance of the matter action to a local one, this in turn implying the introduction of gauge fields. We present here a procedure that runs the other way: starting from the action for gauge fields, matter is gauge invariantly coupled on the basis of Lorentz invariance and charge conservation. An equivalence between the $\mathrm{Schr\ddot{o}dinger}$ dynamics of a quantum system with a finite number of basis states and a classical dynamics is presented. The equivalence is an isomorphism that connects in univocal way both dynamical systems. We treat the particular case of neutral kaons and found a class of electric networks uniquely related to the kaon system finding the complete map between the matrix elements of the effective Hamiltonian of kaons and those elements of the classical dynamics of the networks. As a consequence, the relevant $\epsilon$ parameter that measures CP violation in the kaon system is completely determined in terms of network parameters.

A comparative analysis of the secondary particles output of the main hadronic interaction packages used in simulations of extensive air showers is presented. Special attention is given to the study of events with very energetic leading secondary particles, including diffractive interactions.

We consider an infrared Lorentz violation in connection with recent results of PVLAS experiment. Our analysis is based in a relation that can be established, under certain conditions, between an axial-like-particle theory and electrodynamics with an infrared scale. In the PVLAS case, the conditions imply two dispersion relations such that the infrared scale $|\vec \theta|$, the inverse axion-photon coupling constant $M^{-1}$ and the external magnetic field ${\vec B}$ can be connected through the formula $|{\vec \theta}|= {|\vec B|}/M$. Our analysis, which only requires a non-dynamical (auxiliar) axial-like field leads to $|{\vec\theta}| \leq 5.4 \times 10^{-7}$ meV and $M^{-1} \sim 1.2 \times 10^{-3}$ GeV $^{-1}$., Comment: Revtex, 4pp

A model based on the local gauge group SU(3)_c x SU(3)_L x U(1)_X without particles with exotic electric charges is shown to be able to provide the quark mass spectrum and their mixing, by means of universal see-saw mechanisms, avoiding a hierarchy in the Yukawa coupling constants., Comment: 7 pages, 1 eps figure. A comparative study of commonly used hadronic collision simulation packages is presented. The characteristics of the products of hadron-nucleus collisions are analyzed from a general perspective, but focusing on their correlation with diffractive processes. One of the purposes of our work is to give quantitative estimations of the impact that different characteristics of the hadronic models have on air shower observables. Several sets of shower simulations using different settings for the parameters controlling the diffractive processes are used to analyze the correlations between diffractivity and shower observables. We find that the relative probability of diffractive processes during the shower development have a non negligible influence over the longitudinal profile as well as the distribution of muons at ground level. The implications on experimental data analysis are discussed.

We consider the analytical properties of the single-soliton solution in a Skyrmion-type Lagrangian that incorporates the scaling properties of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) through the coupling of the chiral field to a scalar field interpreted as a bound state of gluons. The model was proposed in previous works to describe the Goldstone pions in a dense medium, being also useful for studying the properties of nuclear matter and the in-medium properties of mesons and nucleons. Guided by an asymptotic analysis of the Euler-Lagrange equations, we propose approximate analytical representations for the single soliton solution in terms of rational approximants exponentially localized. Following the Pad\'e method, we construct a sequence of approximants from the exact power series solutions near the origin. We find that the convergence of the approximate representations to the numerical solutions is considerably improved by taking the expansion coefficients as free parameters and then minimizing the mass of the Skyrmion using our ans\"atze for the fields. We also perform an analysis of convergence by computation of physical quantities showing that the proposed analytical representations are very useful useful for phenomenological calculations., Comment: 13 pages, 3 eps figures, version to be published in Phys.Rev.C

Monthly averages of the sunspot number visible on the sun, observed from 1749, Zurich Observatory, and from 1848 other observatories, have been analyzed. This time signal presents a frequency power spectra with a clear $1/f^\alpha$ behavior with $\alpha\simeq 0.8 \pm 0.2$. The well known cycle of approximately 11 years, clearly present in the spectrum, does not produce a sensible distortion of that behavior. The eventual characterization of the sunspot time series as a fractal is analyzed by means of the detrended fluctuation analysis. We discuss the order \alpha_s^2 gluon initiated QCD corrections to one particle inclusive deep inelastic processes. The Landau distribution as well as its first and second momenta are well suited for describing the energy loss of charged particles traversing a thin layer of matter. At present, just rational approximations and asymptotic expressions for these functions were obtained. In this paper we present a direct calculation of the integral representation of these functions obtaining perturbative and nonperturvative solutions expressed in terms of fast convergent series. We also provide a simple numerical algorithm which allows to control speed and precision of the results. The testing runs have provided, in reasonable computing times, correct results up to 13-14 significant digits on the density and distribution functions and 9-10 on the first and second momenta. We analyze the order-$\alpha_s^2$ QCD corrections to semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and present results for processes initiated by a gluon. We focus in the most singular pieces of these corrections in order to obtain the hitherto unknown NLO evolution kernels relevant for the non homogeneous QCD scale dependence of these cross sections, and to check explicitly factorization at this order. We present the Generalized Borel Transform (GBT). This new approach allows one to obtain approximate solutions of Laplace/Mellin transform valid in both, perturbative and non perturbative regimes. We compare the results provided by the GBT for a solvable model of quantum mechanics with those provided by standard techniques, as the conventional Borel sum, or its modified versions. We found that our approach is very efficient for obtaining both the low and the high energy behavior of the model., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures

An interesting analog circuit for simulating a signal with fluctuations having a probability density function with a power tail has recently been proposed and constructed. The exponent of the power law can be fixed by tuning an appropriate circuit element. The proposal is to use the circuit as a simulator-generator of financial market fluctuations and as a tool for risk estimations and forecasts. We present a discussion of the stability conditions for multiplicative noise and an exhaustive analysis of the power law fluctuation generator in connection with the electronic components and their parameters. From our studies one can conclude that the proposal is not adequate to provide a confident experimental scheme to follow the fluctuations of the financial market due to both electronic implementation and to difficulties in parameter tuning., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures. We reconsider the Euler-Lagrange equation for the Skyrme model in the hedgehog ansatz and study the analytical properties of the solitonic solution. In view of the lack of a closed form solution to the problem, we work on approximate analytical solutions. We show that Pade approximants are well suited to continue analytically the asymptotic representation obtained in terms of a power series expansion near the origin, obtaining explicit approximate solutions for the Skyrme equations. We improve the approximations by applying the 2-point Pade approximant procedure whereby the exact behaviour at spatial infinity is incorporated. An even better convergence to the exact solution is obtained by introducing a modified form for the approximants. The new representations share the same analytical properties with the exact solution at both small and large values of the radial variable r., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures. 1 Reference added

The heavy quark potential and particularly the one proposed by Richardson to incorporate both asymptotic freedom and linear confinement is analyzed in terms of a generalized Borel Transform recently proposed. We were able to obtain, in the range of physical interest, an approximate analytical expression for the potential in coordinate space valid even for intermediate distances. The deviation between our approximate potential and the numerical evaluation of the Richardson's one is much smaller than $\Lambda $ of QCD. The $c\overline{c}$ and $b\overline{b}$ quarkonia energy levels agree reasonably well with experimental data for $c$ and $b$ masses in good agreement with the values obtained from experiments., Comment: 9 pages, 3 Table

These lectures include an introduction to the partonic description of the proton, the photon and the `colour singlet', as seen in inclusive and semi-inclusive DIS, in $e^+e^-$ collisions, and in diffractive processes, respectively. An analysis of the influence of the Landau-Migdal-Pomeranchuk (LPM) effect on the development of air showers initiated by astroparticles is presented. The theory of Migdal is studied and compared with other theoretical methods, particularly the Blankenbecler and Drell approach. By means of realistic computer simulations and using algorithms that emulate Migdal's theory, including also the so-called dielectric suppression, we study the behavior of the relevant observables in the case of ultra-high energy primaries. We compute the ratio between the direct and the resolved photon components of single jet and dijet production in $ep$ collisions for the kinematical range covered by the most recent ZEUS data. We analyse the phenomenological consequences of different models for the structure of virtual photons in these observables and compare them with the available data. We also comment on the correlation between the so called $x_{\gamma}^{obs}$ and the `true' $x_{\gamma}$, that can be inferred from the data., Comment: epsfig, 5 figures

We analyse the phenomenological consequences of target and current fragmentation contributions at next to leading order in semi-inclusive spin dependent deep inelastic scattering asymmetries., Comment: Latex, 5 pages, 5 figures in 5 ps files

We have computed semi-inclusive spin asymmetries for proton and deuteron targets including next to leading order (NLO) QCD corrections and contributions coming from the target fragmentation region. These corrections have been estimated using NLO fragmentation functions, parton distributions and also a model for spin dependent fracture functions which is proposed here. We have found that NLO corrections are small but non-negligible in a scheme where gluons are polarised and that our estimate for target fragmentation effects does not modify significantly charged asymmetries but affects the so called difference asymmetries., Comment: Latex, 14 pages, 6 figures in 4 Postcript files

The finite temperature and finite density dependence of the neutron-proton mass difference is analysed in a purely hadronic framework where the $\rho-\omega $ mixing is crucial for this isospin symmetry breakdown. The problem is handled within Thermo Field Dynamics. We calculate and analize the ${\cal{O}}(\alpha_s)$ one-particle inclusive cross section in polarized deep inelastic lepton-hadron scattering, using dimensional regularization and the HVBM prescription for $\gamma_5$. We discuss the factorization of all the collinear singularities related to the process, particularly those which are absorbed in the redefinition of the spin dependent analogue of the recently introduced fracture functions. This is done in the usual $\overline{MS}$ scheme and in another one, called $\overline{MS_p}$, which factorizes soft contributions and guarantees the axial current (non)conservation properties., Comment: 16 pages, figures included using FEYNMAN macro

We compare the $Q^{2}$ dependence of the polarized deep inelastic scattering proton asymmetry, driven by the leading order Altarelli Parisi evolution equations, to those arising from fixed order $\alpha_{s}$ and $\alpha_{s}^{2}$ approximations. A method is presented to extract the tau neutrino helicity, or equivalently, the chirality parameter $\gamma_{\mathrm{VA}}$, independent of any tau polarization which may be present. The method is thus well-suited to measurements using taus produced from the $Z^0$ and is complementary to analyses using tau correlations since it provides the sign of the chirality parameter which is otherwise unavailable without recourse to lower energy experiments where taus are unpolarized. We analyze spin dependent parton distributions consistent with the most recent measurements of the spin dependent deep inelastic scattering structure functions and obtained in the framework of the spin dilution model.
