1. Cold Atoms and Creation of New States of Matter: Bose-Einstein Condensates, Kapitza States, and '2D Magnetic Hydrogen Atoms'

Abstract

We have succeded in creating Bose-Einstein condensates with 2 million sodium atoms in a '4D' magnetic trap. We show the dynamic formation of a condensate as evaporative cooling proceeds. We also present a series of trap-release pictures clearly showing the distinctly different modes of expansion of condensate and thermal cloud. We further give two examples of wave guides for atomic de Broglie matter waves. One structure, the Kapitza wave guide, uses the interaction between an electrically polarizable atom and a charged wire. For stably bound orbits, a dynamical stabilization with time dependent potentials is necessary. This system, which can be tuned freely between classical and quantum regimes, shows chaotic behavior in the classical limit. The static counterpart of this wave guide leads to the introduction of the 'angular momentum quantum ladder' . The second wave guide structure is based upon the interaction between a current carrying wire and the magnetic dipole moment of an atom. 2. Near Resonant Spatial Images of Confined Bose-Einstein Condensates in the '4D' Magnetic Bottle

Abstract

We present quantitative measurements of the spatial density profile of Bose-Einstein condensates of sodium atoms confined in a new '4D' magnetic bottle. The condensates are imaged in transmission with near resonant laser light. We demonstrate that the Thomas-Fermi surface of a condensate can be determined to better than 1%. More generally, we obtain excellent agreement with mean-field theory. We conclude that precision measurements of atomic scattering lengths and interactions between phase separated cold atoms in a harmonic trap can be measured with high precision using this method., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures. 3. Library Statistics of Colleges and Universities in the Pacific Northwest, 1984-85.

Abstract

This 1984-85 statistical survey of libraries at four-year colleges and universities, two-year colleges, law libraries, and miscellaneous academic institutions in the Pacific Northwest provides relevant data for comparison and inventory purposes. A total of 98 institutions responded to the questionnaire, which was administered by the Pacific Northwest Library Association (PNLA). Although the current questionnaire follows past practice in order to provide comparable data, some changes have been implemented. Questions dealing with online interlibrary loan capability were omitted and several questions relating to usage were added; i.e., circulation figures, reference transactions, gate counts, bibliographic instruction statistics, database transactions, and hours of service. Divided by type of institution, data tables include but are not limited to the following topics: (1) rank by collection size; (2) volumes held as of June 1985; (3) volumes per full time student; (4) growth rate; (5) total microform units; (6) audiovisual units (broken into categories); (7) government documents; (8) number of items borrowed; (9) current serials; (10) total library operating expenses; (11) professional staff; (12) non-professional, non-student staff; (13) number of male/female professional staff; (14) number of hours in professional work week; (15) beginning professional salaries; and (16) director's salaries. The survey instrument, instructions for completing the questionnaire, and an index to respondents are included. (THC).

4. Automation and Reorganization of Technical and Public Services. SPEC Kit 112.

Abstract

This SPEC (Systems and Procedures Exchange Center) kit is based partially on the results of a fall, 1984 survey of the 117 Association of Research Libraries (ARL) members to determine the extent to which they have reorganized staff and the role played by automation in planning organizational change. Particular attention was paid to the integration of public and technical services functions. Of the 82 respondents, 46 indicate they are currently organized along traditional technical services/public services lines and 36 report some integration; no respondents report complete integration. The kit contains statistical survey results and a copy of the survey, as well as program descriptions, annual reports, organization charts, recommendations, and job descriptions. The following United States and Canadian institutions are represented: Boston University; Brigham Young University; University of British Columbia; University of California at Los Angeles; University of Illinois; University of New Mexico; New York University; Ohio State University; Pennsylvania State University; University of Texas at Austin; University of Waterloo; Wayne State University; and York University. 5. Integration of Public and Technical Services Functions. Observations on Organizational Change in Six Member Libraries of the Association of Research Libraries.

Abstract

This study explores current trends and practices in functional integration based on site visits to six Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member libraries selected on the basis of their responses to a Fall 1984 ARL questionnaire. The responses indicated that, for all six libraries, some integration of functions existed, staff reorganization was underway or complete, cataloging was taking place in public areas, and professional librarians were participating in both public and technical services functions. The current situation of the six libraries and their decisions to reorganize are summarized, and the following developments and issues are considered: (1) collection management and service to users; (2) impact of automation; (3) organizational climate; (4) flexible use of staff; (5) staff morale; (6) reporting relationships; and (7) recruitment and training. Increased information delivery and an expansion outward in client-centered groupings are identified as possible future trends for public service areas, along with the continuing compression of massive technical services departments, and it is concluded that leadership and staff participation, as well as a clear sense of where the institution is going, are vital ingredients in successful organizational change. Notes and a 61-item selected bibliography are provided, and a listing of the issues addressed is appended. (KM)
