The success of all students in schools, including students with learning differences, is contingent on how schools operationalize universally designed instruction, positive behavior support, and data-based decision-making for individualized and group-level interventions. When schools have fully functional multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) that center equity and focus necessary attention on academic conditions, student behavior, and social-emotional learning conditions, students are more likely to receive the instruction and interventions they need. Further, there is evidence of improvements in student outcomes, particularly those related to behavior, when MTSS is implemented effectively. To address the need for effective MTSS implementation, WestEd engaged in a research and technical assistance partnership in which WestEd subject matter experts provided guidance on designing and implementing effective MTSS. WestEd researchers simultaneously studied the short-, mid-, and long-term effects of these efforts on student outcomes. This interim report provides initial analyses of student-level impacts in one of the two school districts involved in this project.

We conduct an investigation of the differentiability and continuity of reward functionals associated to Markovian randomized stopping times. Our focus is mostly on the differentiability, which is a crucial ingredient for a common approach to derive analytic expressions for the reward function.

For the first time in an extragalactic source, we detect linearly polarized water maser emission associated with the molecular accretion disk of NGC 1068. The position angles of the electric polarization vectors are perpendicular to the axes of filamentary structures in the molecular accretion disk. The inferred magnetic field threading the molecular disk must lie within approximately 35 degrees of the sky plane. The orientation of the magnetic fields relative to the disk plane implies that the maser region is unstable to hydromagnetically powered outflow; we speculate that the maser region may be the source of the larger scale molecular outflow found in ALMA studies. The new VLBI observations also reveal a compact radio continuum source, NGC 1068*, aligned with the near-systemic maser spots. The molecular accretion disk must be viewed nearly edge-on, and the revised central mass is (16.6 +/- 0.1) million solar masses., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. This study presents a novel quantitative estimation method for total retinal arterial blood flow utilizing real-time Doppler holography at an unprecedented frame rate of 33,000 frames per second. This technique, leveraging high-speed digital holography, enables non-invasive angiographic imaging of the retina, providing detailed blood flow contrasts essential for assessing retinal health. The proposed quantitative analysis method consists of segmenting primary in-plane retinal arteries and calculating local blood velocity using Doppler frequency broadening. The analysis integrates a forward scattering model to achieve blood flow estimation. Our findings highlight the potential of Doppler holography as a powerful tool for diagnosing and monitoring the treatment of retinal vascular conditions, complementary to existing imaging methods.

Modeling atmospheric chemistry is complex and computationally intense. Given the recent success of Deep neural networks in digital signal processing, we propose a Neural Network Emulator for fast chemical concentration modeling. We consider atmospheric chemistry as a time-dependent Ordinary Differential Equation. To extract the hidden correlations between initial states and future time evolution, we propose ChemNNE, an Attention based Neural Network Emulator (NNE) that can model the atmospheric chemistry as a neural ODE process. To efficiently simulate the chemical changes, we propose the sinusoidal time embedding to estimate the oscillating tendency over time. More importantly, we use the Fourier neural operator to model the ODE process for efficient computation. We also propose three physical-informed losses to supervise the training optimization. To evaluate our model, we propose a large-scale chemical dataset that can be used for neural network training and evaluation. The extensive experiments show that our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance in modeling accuracy and computational speed., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures

In optimal stopping problems, a Markov structure guarantees Markovian optimal stopping times (first exit times). Surprisingly, there is no analogous result for Markovian stopping games once randomization is required. This paper addresses this gap by proving the existence of Markov-perfect equilibria in a specific type of stopping game - a general nonzero-sum Dynkin games of the war-of-attrition type with underlying linear diffusions. Our main mathematical contribution lies in the development of appropriate topologies for Markovian randomized stopping times. This allows us to establish the existence of equilibria within a tractable and interpretable class of stopping times, paving the way for further analysis of Markovian stopping games.

High resolution (0."037-0."13 [10-35 pc]) e-MERLIN ($\lambda6-18$ cm) and (0."024 [6.5 pc]) ALMA ($\lambda 1.1$ mm) observations have been used to image OH (hydroxyl) and H$_2$CO (formaldehyde) megamaser emission, and HCN 3->2 emission towards the nuclear (<100 pc) region of the luminous infrared galaxy Zw049.057. Zw049.057 hosts a compact obscured nucleus (CON), thus representing a class of galaxies that are often associated with inflow and outflow motions. Formaldehyde megamaser emission is detected towards the nuclear region, <30 pc (<0."1), and traces a structure along the disk major axis. OH megamaser (OHM) emission is detected along the minor axis of the disk, ~30 pc (0."1) from the nucleus, where it exhibits a velocity gradient with extrema of -20 km/s south-east (SE) of the disk and -110 km/s north-west (NW) of the disk. HCN 3->2 emission reveals extended emission, along the disk minor axis out to ~60 pc (0."2). Analysis of the minor axis HCN emission reveals high-velocity features, extending out to 600 km/s, redshifted on the SE side and blueshifted on the NW side. We propose that the high-velocity HCN emission traces a fast >250 km/s and collimated outflow, that is enveloped by a wide-angle and slow ~50 km/s outflow that is traced by the OHM emission. Analysis of the outflow kinematics suggests that the slow wide-angle outflow will not reach escape velocity and instead will fall back to the galaxy disk, evolving as a so-called fountain flow, while the fast collimated outflow traced by HCN emission will likely escape the nuclear region. We suggest that the absence of OHM emission in the nuclear region is due to high densities there. Even though OHMs associated with outflows are an exception to conventional OHM emission, we expect them to be common in CON sources that host both OHM and H$_2$CO megamasers., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures. Variational quantum algorithms (VQAs) have demonstrated considerable potential in solving NP-hard combinatorial problems in the contemporary near intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) era. The quantum approximate optimisation algorithm (QAOA) is one such algorithm, used in solving the maximum cut (Max-Cut) problem for a given graph by successive implementation of $L$ quantum circuit layers within a corresponding Trotterised ansatz. The challenge of exploring the cost function of VQAs arising from an exponential proliferation of local minima with increasing circuit depth has been well-documented. However, fewer studies have investigated the impact of circuit depth on QAOA performance in finding the correct Max-Cut solution. Here, we employ basin-hopping global optimisation methods to navigate the energy landscapes for QAOA ans\"atze for various graphs, and analyse QAOA performance in finding the correct Max-Cut solution. The structure of the solution space is also investigated using discrete path sampling to build databases of local minima and the transition states that connect them, providing insightful visualisations using disconnectivity graphs. We find that the corresponding landscapes generally have a single funnel organisation, which makes it relatively straightforward to locate low-lying minima with good Max-Cut solution probabilities. In some cases below the adiabatic limit the second lowest local minimum may even yield a higher solution probability than the global minimum. This important observation has motivated us to develop broader metrics in evaluating QAOA performance, based on collections of minima obtained from basin-hopping global optimisation. Hence we establish expectation thresholds in elucidating useful solution probabilities from local minima, an approach that may provide significant gains in elucidating reasonable solution probabilities from local minima.

(Abridged) Polarized emission from masers is an excellent tool to study magnetic fields in maser sources. The linear polarization of most masers is understood as an interplay of maser saturation and anisotropic pumping. However, for the latter mechanism, no quantitative modeling has been presented yet. We present a comprehensive model of maser polarization, including quantitative modeling of both anisotropic pumping and the effects of maser saturation on the polarization of masers. We extend regular maser excitation modeling with a dimension that describes the molecular population alignments, as well as including the linear polarization dimension to the radiative transfer. The results of the excitation analysis yield the anisotropic pumping and decay parameters, that are subsequently used in one-dimensional proper maser polarization radiative transfer modeling. We present the anisotropic pumping parameters for a variety of transitions from class I CH$_3$OH masers, H$_2$O masers and SiO masers. SiO masers are highly anisotropically pumped due to them occurring in the vicinity of a late-type star, that irradiates the maser region with a strong directional radiation field. Class I CH$_3$OH masers and H$_2$O masers occur in association with shocks, and they are modestly anisotropically pumped due to the anisotropy of the excitation region. Our modeling constitutes the first quantitative constraints on the anisotropic pumping of masers. We find that anisotropic pumping can explain the high polarization yields of SiO masers, as well as the modest polarization of unsaturated class I CH$_3$OH masers. We predict that the $183$ GHz H$_2$O maser is strongly anisotropically pumped. What does it mean for an algebraic rewrite rule to subsume another rule (that may then be called a subrule)? We view subsumptions as rule morphisms such that the simultaneous application of a rule and a subrule (i.e. the application of a subsumption morphism) yields the same result as a single application of the subsuming rule. Simultaneous applications of categories of rules are obtained by Global Coherent Transformations and illustrated on graphs in the DPO approach. We study the (weak) equilibrium problem arising from the problem of optimally stopping a one-dimensional diffusion subject to an expectation constraint on the time until stopping. The weak equilibrium problem is realized with a set of randomized but purely state dependent stopping times as admissible strategies. We derive a verification theorem and necessary conditions for equilibria, which together basically characterize all equilibria. Furthermore, additional structural properties of equilibria are obtained to feed a possible guess-and-verify approach, which is then illustrated by an example.

The use of high energy transients such as Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) as probes of the distant universe relies on the close collaboration between space and ground facilities. In this context, the Sino-French mission SVOM has been designed to combine a space and a ground segment and to make the most of their synergy. On the ground, the 1.3 meter robotic telescope COLIBRI, jointly developed by France and Mexico, will quickly point the sources detected by the space hard X-ray imager ECLAIRs, in order to detect and localise their visible/NIR counterpart and alert large telescopes in minutes. COLIBRI is equipped with two visible cameras, called DDRAGO-blue and DDRAGO-red, and an infrared camera, called CAGIRE, designed for the study of high redshift GRBs candidates. Being a low-noise NIR camera mounted at the focus of an alt-azimutal robotic telescope imposes specific requirements on CAGIRE. We describe here the main characteristics of the camera: its optical, mechanical and electronics architecture, the ALFA detector, and the operation of the camera on the telescope. The instrument description is completed by three sections presenting the calibration strategy, an image simulator incorporating known detector effects, and the automatic reduction software for the ramps acquired by the detector. Magnetic fields are predicted to have a crucial impact on the structure, evolution and chemistry of protoplanetary disks. However, a direct detection of the magnetic field towards these objects has yet to be achieved. In order to characterize protoplanetary disk magnetic fields, we investigate the impact of the Zeeman effect on the (polarized) radiative transfer of emission from paramagnetic molecules excited in protoplanetary disks. While the effects of the Zeeman effect are commonly studied in the circular polarization of spectral lines, we perform a comprehensive modeling also of the Zeeman-induced broadening of spectral lines and their linear polarization. We develop simplified radiative transfer models adapted to protoplanetary disks, which we compare to full three-dimensional polarized radiative transfer simulations. We find that the radiative transfer of circular polarization is heavily affected by the expected polarity-change of the magnetic field between opposite sides of the disk. In contrast, Zeeman broadening and linear polarization are relatively unaffected by this sign change due to their quadratic dependence on the magnetic field. We can match our simplified radiative transfer models to full polarization modeling with high fidelity, which in turn allows us to prescribe straight-forward methods to extract magnetic field information from Zeeman broadening and linear polarization observations. We find that Zeeman broadening and linear polarization observations are highly advantageous methods to characterize protoplanetary disk magnetic fields as they are both sensitive probes of the magnetic field and are marginally affected by any sign change of the disk magnetic field. Applying our results to existing circular polarization observations of protoplanetary disk spectral lines suggests that the current upper limits on the toroidal magnetic field strengths have to be raised., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures, accepted to A&A

Monographs are graph-like structures with directed edges of unlimited length that are freely adjacent to each other. The standard nodes are represented as edges of length zero. They can be drawn in a way consistent with standard graphs and many others, like E-graphs or $\infty$-graphs. The category of monographs share many properties with the categories of graph structures (algebras of monadic many-sorted signatures), except that there is no terminal monograph. It is universal in the sense that its slice categories (or categories of typed monographs) are equivalent to the categories of graph structures. Type monographs thus emerge as a natural way of specifying graph structures. A detailed analysis of single and double pushout transformations of monographs is provided, and a notion of attributed typed monographs generalizing typed attributed E-graphs is analyzed w.r.t. attribute-preserving transformations.

The cross-over from quasi-two- to quasi-one-dimensional electron transport subject to transverse electric fields and perpendicular magnetic fields are studied in the diffusive to quasiballistic and zero-field to quantum Hall regime. In-plane gates and Hall-bars have been fabricated from an InGaAs/InAlAs/InAs quantum well hosting a 2DEG with carrier density of about 6.8$\times$10$^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$, mobility of 1.8$\times$10$^5$ cm$^2$/Vs and an effective mass of 0.042$m_e$ after illumination. Magnetotransport measurements at temperatures down to 50 mK and fields up to 12 T yield a high effective Land\'e-factor of |g$^*$| = 16, enabling the resolution of spin-split subbands at magnetic fields of 2.5 T. In the quantum Hall regime, electrostatic control of an effective constriction width enables steering of the reflection and transmission of edge channels, allowing a separation of fully spin-polarized edge channels at filling factors ${\nu}$ = 1 und ${\nu}$ = 2. A change in the orientation of a transverse in-plane electric field in the constriction shifts the transition between Zeeman-split quantum Hall plateaus by ${\Delta}$B $\approx$ 0.1 T and is consistent with an effective magnetic field of B$_{eff}$ $\approx$ 0.13 T by spin-dependent backscattering, indicating a change in the spin-split density of states., Comment: New version, with minor correction and adaptions for submission

This article compares findings from two national surveys of remote learning for children 2-5 years old during school year one (2019-2020) of the COVID-19 pandemic to school year two (2020-2021) of the COVID-19 pandemic. The refined survey contains 45 closed-ended and five open-ended items covering seven domains: (a) demographic information; (b) preparation, guidelines, and materials for remote learning; (c) caregiver communication and engagement; (d) assessment; (e) instruction; (f) educators' levels of confidence before and after remote learning; and (g) access to services (i.e. wraparound and/or special education). Both quantitative (descriptive, regression, ANOVA, Wilcoxon signed rank test) and consensual qualitative research analyses were applied to summarize the results from 506 early childhood educators. Study results indicate that improvements in remote learning were made during the second pandemic school year. Remote learning has potential for young children if an infrastructure that allows for successful implementation is established. Improving and homogenizing time and space reference systems on Earth and, more directly, realizing the Terrestrial Reference Frame (TRF) with an accuracy of 1mm and a long-term stability of 0.1mm/year are relevant for many scientific and societal endeavors. The knowledge of the TRF is fundamental for Earth and navigation sciences. For instance, quantifying sea level change strongly depends on an accurate determination of the geocenter motion but also of the positions of continental and island reference stations, as well as the ground stations of tracking networks. Also, numerous applications in geophysics require absolute millimeter precision from the reference frame, as for example monitoring tectonic motion or crustal deformation for predicting natural hazards. The TRF accuracy to be achieved represents the consensus of various authorities which has enunciated geodesy requirements for Earth sciences. Today we are still far from these ambitious accuracy and stability goals for the realization of the TRF. However, a combination and co-location of all four space geodetic techniques on one satellite platform can significantly contribute to achieving these goals. This is the purpose of the GENESIS mission, proposed as a component of the FutureNAV program of the European Space Agency. The GENESIS platform will be a dynamic space geodetic observatory carrying all the geodetic instruments referenced to one another through carefully calibrated space ties. The co-location of the techniques in space will solve the inconsistencies and biases between the different geodetic techniques in order to reach the TRF accuracy and stability goals endorsed by the various international authorities and the scientific community. CAGIRE is the near infrared camera of the Colibr\'i robotic telescope, designed for the follow-up of SVOM alerts. It is based on the ALFA 2k x 2k detector, from the LYNRED French Company, operating in "Up the Ramp" mode. An observation consists in a series of short (1-2 minutes) exposures during which the pixels are read out every 1.3 second, while continuously accumulating charges proportionally to the received flux. (Abridged) Life is distinctly homochiral. The origins of this homochirality are under active debate. Recently, propylene-oxide has been detected in the gas-phase interstellar medium (ISM) (McGuire et al. 2016). The enantiomeric composition of ISM propylene-oxide may be probed through circular polarization measurements, but accurate estimates of the circular dichroism properties of the microwave transitions of propylene-oxide are not available. We develop a model of the circular dichroic activity in torsion-rotation transitions of closed-shell chiral molecules, such as propylene-oxide. With this model, we estimate the viability, and optimize observation strategies, of enantiomeric excess detection in ISM propylene-oxide. We present estimates for the dichroic activity of the torsion-rotation transitions of propylene-oxide, where we predict that the circular polarization fractions of emission lines of enantiopure propylene-oxide relevant to astronomical detection of propylene-oxide are on the order of 10^(-6). Due to the low predicted circular polarization fractions, we conclude that enantiomeric characterization of propylene-oxide in the gas phase of the ISM is impossible with current astronomical observation techniques. We suggest that only chiral radical species may be viably employed for enantiomeric excess detection. We estimate that laboratory experiments may be successful in detecting the enantiomeric composition of a mixture of propylene-oxide through microwave dichroism spectroscopy. Universal screening and progress monitoring are evidence-based practices in early intervention/ early childhood special education (EI/ECSE). Individual Growth and Development Indicators (IGDIs) for infants/toddlers are measures that programs can use for universal screening, progress monitoring, intervention decision-making, and accountability. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, IGDIs were administered and scored exclusively in person by certified early educators. Because of COVID-19, EI/ECSE practitioners could no longer conduct in-person assessments. We report how two early intervention programs implemented IGDIs using remote protocols that included (a) preparation of parents for IGDI administration at home, (b) session observation by program staff using videoconferencing, and (c) remote coding of the child's performance by program staff when interacting with a parent/caregiver play partner using the standard toy set. The remote protocols are described, and uptake by the programs is compared before and during the pandemic. Equivalence of children's scores from in-person versus remote protocols is reported, as well as caregivers' and program staff's preferences. This chapter focuses on the evolution of Human-Centered Design (HCD) in aerospace systems over the last forty years. Human Factors and Ergonomics first shifted from the study of physical and medical issues to cognitive issues circa the 1980s. The advent of computers brought with it the development of human-computer interaction (HCI), which then expanded into the field of digital interaction design and User Experience (UX). We ended up with the concept of interactive cockpits, not because pilots interacted with mechanical things, but because they interacted using pointing devices on computer displays. Since the early 2000s, complexity and organizational issues gained prominence to the point that complex systems design and management found itself center stage, with the spotlight on the role of the human element and organizational setups. Today, Human Systems Integration (HSI) is no longer only a single-agent problem, but a multi-agent research field. Systems are systems of systems, considered as representations of people and machines. They are made of statically and dynamically articulated structures and functions. When they are at work, they are living organisms that generate emerging functions and structures that need to be considered in evolution (i.e., in their constant redesign). This chapter will more specifically, focus on human factors such as human-centered systemic representations, life critical systems, organizational issues, complexity management, modeling and simulation, flexibility, tangibility and autonomy. We discuss the existence of elliptical polarisation in rotational spectral lines of CO and other molecules within the context of the Anisotropic Resonant Scattering (ARS) model. We show that the effect of ARS on the radiation field can lead to not only the previously predicted transformation of background linear polarisation into circular polarisation (i.e., Faraday conversion), but also the occurrence of Faraday rotation and the generation of elliptically polarised signals in an otherwise initially unpolarised radiation field. This is due to a collective behaviour between the large number of molecules acting as a diffraction ensemble that strongly favours forward scattering over any other mode. Our application to astronomical data demonstrates the dependency of the Stokes parameters on the strength and orientation of the ambient magnetic field, and suggests that ARS will manifest itself for a wide range of molecular species and transitions., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication MNRAS

(abridged) Magnetic fields are fundamental to the accretion dynamics of protoplanetary disks and they likely affect planet formation. Typical methods to study the magnetic field morphology observe the polarization of dust or spectral lines. However, it has recently become clear that dust-polarization in ALMA's spectral regime does not always faithfully trace the magnetic field structure of protoplanetary disks, which leaves spectral line polarization as a promising method for mapping the magnetic field morphologies of such sources. We aim to model the emergent polarization of different molecular lines in the ALMA wavelength regime that are excited in protoplanetary disks. We explore a variety of disk models and molecules to identify those properties that are conducive to the emergence of polarization in spectral lines and may therefore be viably used for magnetic field measurements in protoplanetary disks. We used PORTAL in conjunction with LIME. Together, they allowed us to treat the polarized line radiative transfer of complex three-dimensional physical and magnetic field structures. We present simulations of the emergence of spectral line polarization of different molecules and molecular transitions in the ALMA wavelength regime. We find that molecules that thermalize at high densities, such as HCN, are also the most susceptible to polarization. We find that such molecules are expected to be significantly polarized in protoplanetary disks, while molecules that thermalize at low densities, such as CO, are only significantly polarized in the outer disk regions. We present the simulated polarization maps at a range of inclinations and magnetic field morphologies, and we comment on the observational feasibility of ALMA linear polarization observations of protoplanetary disks., Comment: Accepted to A&A

Sentiment tasks such as hate speech detection and sentiment analysis, especially when performed on languages other than English, are often low-resource. In this study, we exploit the emotional information encoded in emojis to enhance the performance on a variety of sentiment tasks. This is done using a transfer learning approach, where the parameters learned by an emoji-based source task are transferred to a sentiment target task. We analyse the efficacy of the transfer under three conditions, i.e. i) the emoji content and ii) label distribution of the target task as well as iii) the difference between monolingually and multilingually learned source tasks. We find i.a. that the transfer is most beneficial if the target task is balanced with high emoji content. In order to define graph transformations by the simultaneous application of concurrent rules, we have adopted in previous work a structure of attributed graphs stable by unions. We analyze the consequences on parallel independence, a property that characterizes the possibility to resort to sequential rewriting. This property turns out to depend not only on the left-hand side of rules, as in algebraic approaches to graph rewriting, but also on their right-hand side. (Abridged) Astronomical masers have been effective tools to study magnetic fields for many years. In particular, methanol can be used to probe different parts of protostars such as accretion discs and outflows, since it produces one of the strongest and the most commonly observed masers in massive star-forming regions. We investigate the polarization properties of selected methanol maser transitions in light of newly calculated methanol Land\'e g-factors and considering hyperfine components. We compare our results with previous observations and we evaluate the effect of preferred hyperfine pumping and non-Zeeman effects. We run simulations using the radiative transfer code CHAMP. We find a dependence of linear and circular polarization fractions on the hyperfine transitions. Preferred hyperfine pumping can explain some high levels of linear and circular polarization and some of the peculiar features seen in the S-shape of observed V-profiles. Methanol masers are not significantly affected by non-Zeeman effects. Our models show that for methanol maser emission, both the linear and circular polarization percentages depend on which hyperfine transition is masing and the degree to which it is being pumped. Since non-Zeeman effects become more relevant at high values of brightness temperatures, it is important to obtain good estimates of these quantities and on maser beaming angles. Better constraints on the brightness temperature will help in understand about the extent to which non-Zeeman effects contribute to the observed polarization percentages. Magnetic fields play a role in the dynamics of many astrophysical processes, but they are hard to detect. In a partially ionized plasma, a magnetic field works directly on the ionized medium but not on the neutral medium, which gives rise to a velocity drift between them: ambipolar diffusion. This process is suggested to be important in the process of star formation, but has never been directly observed. We introduce a method that could be used to detect ambipolar diffusion and the magnetic field that gives rise to it, where we exploit the velocity drift between the charged and neutral medium. By using a representative classical model of the collision dynamics, we show that molecular ions partially align themselves when a velocity drift is present between the molecular ion and its main collision partner H2. We demonstrate that ambipolar diffusion potently aligns molecular ions in regions denser than their critical density, which subsequently leads to partially polarized emission from these species. We include a model for HCO+ and show that collisional polarization could be detectable for the ambipolar drifts predicted by numerical simulations of the inner protostellar disk regions. Context. Magnetic fields are important to the dynamics of many astrophysical processes and can typically be studied through polarization observations. Polarimetric interferometry capabilities of modern (sub)millimeter telescope facilities have made it possible to obtain detailed velocity resolved maps of molecular line polarization. To properly analyze these for the information they carry regarding the magnetic field, the development of adaptive three-dimensional polarized line radiative transfer models is necessary. Aims. We aim to develop an easy-to-use program to simulate the polarization maps of molecular and atomic (sub)millimeter lines in magnetized astrophysical regions, such as protostellar disks, circumstellar envelopes, or molecular clouds. Methods. By considering the local anisotropy of the radiation field as the only alignment mechanism, we can model the alignment of molecular or atomic species inside a regular line radiative transfer simulation by only making use of the converged output of this simulation. Calculations of the aligned molecular or atomic states can subsequently be used to ray trace the polarized maps of the three-dimensional simulation. Results. We present a three-dimensional radiative transfer code, POlarized Radiative Transfer Adapted to Lines (PORTAL), that can simulate the emergence of polarization in line emission through a magnetic field of arbitrary morphology. Our model can be used in stand-alone mode, assuming LTE excitation, but it is best used when processing the output of regular three-dimensional (nonpolarized) line radiative transfer modeling codes. The temperature dependence of the charge carrier density, mobility and Seebeck coefficient of melt-grown, bulk ZnGa2O4 single crystals was measured between 10 K and 310 K. The electrical conductivity at room temperature is about s = 286 S/cm due to a high electron concentration of n = 3.26*10^(19) cm^(-3), caused by unintenional doping. The mobility at room temperature is mu = 55 cm^2/Vs, whereas the scattering on ionized impurities limits the mobility to mu =62 cm^2/Vs for temperatures lower than 180 K. The Seebeck coefficient relative to aluminum at room temperature is S_(ZnGa2O4-Al) = (-125+-2) muV/K and shows a temperature dependence as expected for degenerate semiconductors. At low temperatures, around 60 K we observed a maximum of the Seebeck coefficient due to the phonon drag effect.

An Independent Parallelism Theorem is proven in the theory of adhesive HLR categories. It shows the bijective correspondence between sequential independent and parallel independent direct derivations in the Weak Double-Pushout framework, see [2]. The polarization of masers contains information on the magnetic field strength and direction of the regions they occur in. Many maser polarization observations have been performed over the last 30 years. However, versatile maser polarization models that can aide in the interpretation of these observations are not available. We aim to develop a program suite that can compute the polarization by a magnetic field of any non-paramagnetic maser specie at arbitrarily high maser saturation. Furthermore, we aim to investigate the polarization of masers by non-Zeeman polarizing effects. We aim to present a general interpretive structure for maser polarization observations. We expand existing maser polarization theories of non-paramagnetic molecules and incorporate these in a numerical modeling program suite. We present a modeling program that CHAracterizes Maser Polarization (CHAMP) that can examine the polarization of masers of arbitrarily high maser saturation and high angular momentum. Also, hyperfine multiplicity of the maser-transition can be incorporated. The user is able to investigate non-Zeeman polarizing mechanisms such as anisotropic pumping and polarized incident seed radiation. We present an analysis of the polarization of v = 1 SiO masers and the 22 GHz water maser. We comment on the underlying polarization mechanisms, and also investigate non-Zeeman effects. We identify the regimes where different polarizing mechanisms will be dominant and present the polarization characteristics of the SiO and water masers. We address the problem of defining graph transformations by the simultaneous application of direct transformations even when these cannot be applied independently of each other. Using $e^+e^-$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb$^{-1}$ taken at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, we determine the absolute branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(D^+\rightarrow K_S^0 K^+)$ = $(3.02 \pm 0.09 \pm 0.08)\times10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}(D^+\rightarrow K_S^0 K^+ \pi^0)$ = $(5.07 \pm 0.19 \pm 0.23)\times10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}(D^+\rightarrow K_L^0 K^+)$ = $(3.21 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.11)\times10^{-3}$, and $\mathcal{B}(D^+\rightarrow K_L^0 K^+ \pi^0)$ = $(5.24 \pm 0.22 \pm 0.22)\times10^{-3}$, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The branching fraction \wbrksk is consistent with the world average value and the other three branching fractions are measured for the first time. The temperature dependence of the Seebeck coefficient of homoepitaxial metal organic vapor phase (MOVPE) grown, silicon doped $\beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ thin films was measured relative to aluminum. For room temperature we found the relative Seebeck coefficient of $S_{\beta\text{-Ga}_2\text{O}_3\text{-Al}}=(-300\pm20)\;\mu$V/K. At high bath temperatures $T>240$ K, the scattering is determined by electron-phonon-interaction. At lower bath temperatures between $T=100$ K and $T=300$ K, an increase in the magnitude of the Seebeck coefficient is explained in the frame of Strattons formula. The influence of the different scattering mechanisms on the magnitude of the Seebeck coefficient is discussed and compared with Hall measurement results., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Pilots currently use paper-based documentation and electronic systems to help them perform procedures to ensure safety, efficiency and comfort on commercial aircrafts. Management of interconnections among paper-based operational documents can be a challenge for pilots, especially when time pressure is high in normal, abnormal, and emergency situations. This dissertation is a contribution to the design of an Onboard Context-Sensitive Information System (OCSIS), which was developed on a tablet. The claim is that the use of con-textual information facilitates access to appropriate operational content at the right time either automatically or on demand. OCSIS was tested using human-in-the-loop simulations that involved professional pilots in the Airbus 320 cockpit simulator. First results are encouraging that show OCSIS can be usable and useful for operational information access. More specifically, context-sensitivity contributes to simplify this access (i.e., appropriate operational information is provided at the right time in the right format. In addition, OCSIS provides other features that paper-based documents do not have, such as procedure execution status after an interruption. Also, the fact that several calculations are automatically done by OCSIS tends to decrease the pilot's task demand .

We tackle the problem of attributed graph transformations and propose a new algorithmic approach for defining parallel graph transformations allowing overlaps. We start by introducing some abstract operations over graph structures. Then, we define the notion of rewrite rules as three inclusions of the form $L \supseteq K \supseteq M \subseteq R$. We provide six conditions that parallel graph rewrite relations should ideally satisfy, which lead us to define two distinct full parallel graph rewrite relations. A central notion of regularity of matchings is proved to be equivalent to these six conditions, and to the equality of these two relations. Furthermore, we take advantage of the symmetries that may occur in $L$, $K$, $M$ and $R$ and define another pair of rewrite relations that factor out possibly many equivalent matchings up to their common symmetries. These definitions and the corresponding proofs combine operations on graphs with group-theoretic notions, thus illustrating the relevance of our framework.

Thin films of the wide band gap semiconductor $\beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ have a high potential for applications in transparent electronics and high power devices. However, the role of interfaces remains to be explored. Here, we report on fundamental limits of transport properties in thin films. The conductivities, Hall densities and mobilities in thin homoepitaxially MOVPE grown \mbox{(100)-orientated $\beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$} films were measured as a function of temperature and film thickness. At room temperature, the electron mobilities ((115$\pm$10) $\mathrm{\frac{cm^2}{Vs}}$) in thicker films (> 150 nm) are comparable to the best of bulk. However, the mobility is strongly reduced by more than two orders of magnitude with decreasing film thickness ((5.5$\pm$0.5) $\mathrm{\frac{cm^2}{Vs}}$ for a 28 nm thin film). We find that the commonly applied classical Fuchs-Sondheimer model does not explain the contribution of electron scattering at the film surfaces sufficiently. Instead, by applying an electron wave model by Bergmann, a contribution to the mobility suppression due to the large de Broglie wavelength in $\beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ is proposed as a limiting quantum mechanical size effect., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

User-generated content online is shaped by many factors, including endogenous elements such as platform affordances and norms, as well as exogenous elements, in particular significant events. These impact what users say, how they say it, and when they say it. In this paper, we focus on quantifying the impact of violent events on various types of hate speech, from offensive and derogatory to intimidation and explicit calls for violence. We anchor this study in a series of attacks involving Arabs and Muslims as perpetrators or victims, occurring in Western countries, that have been covered extensively by news media. These attacks have fueled intense policy debates around immigration in various fora, including online media, which have been marred by racist prejudice and hateful speech. The focus of our research is to model the effect of the attacks on the volume and type of hateful speech on two social media platforms, Twitter and Reddit. Among other findings, we observe that extremist violence tends to lead to an increase in online hate speech, particularly on messages directly advocating violence. Our research has implications for the way in which hate speech online is monitored and suggests ways in which it could be fought., Comment: 10 pages. Magnetic fields play an important role during star formation. Direct magnetic field strength observations have proven specifically challenging in the extremely dynamic protostellar phase. Because of their occurrence in the densest parts of star forming regions, masers, through polarization observations, are the main source of magnetic field strength and morphology measurements around protostars. Of all maser species, methanol is one of the strongest and most abundant tracers of gas around high-mass protostellar disks and in outflows. However, as experimental determination of the magnetic characteristics of methanol has remained largely unsuccessful, a robust magnetic field strength analysis of these regions could hitherto not be performed. Here we report a quantitative theoretical model of the magnetic properties of methanol, including the complicated hyperfine structure that results from its internal rotation. We show that the large range in values of the Land\'{e} g-factors of the hyperfine components of each maser line lead to conclusions which differ substantially from the current interpretation based on a single effective g-factor. These conclusions are more consistent with other observations and confirm the presence of dynamically important magnetic fields around protostars. Our current understanding of the chemistry and mass-loss processes in solar-like stars at the end of their evolution depends critically on the description of convection, pulsations and shocks in the extended stellar atmosphere. Three-dimensional hydrodynamical stellar atmosphere models provide observational predictions, but so far the resolution to constrain the complex temperature and velocity structures seen in the models has been lacking. Here we present submillimeter continuum and line observations that resolve the atmosphere of the asymptotic giant branch star W Hya. We show that hot gas with chromospheric characteristics exists around the star. Its filling factor is shown to be small. The existence of such gas requires shocks with a cooling time larger than commonly assumed. Negative emotional responses to the daily life stresses have cumulative effects which, in turn, impose wide-ranging negative constraints on emotional well being and neurocognitive performance (Kalueff:2007cp, Charles:2013eq, Nadler:2010hk). Crucial cognitive functions such as memory and problem solving, as well more short term emotional responses (e.g., anticipation of- and response to- monetary rewards or losses) are influenced by mood. The negative impact of these behavioural responses is felt at the individual level, but it also imposes major economic burden on modern healthcare systems. Although much research have been undertaken to understand the underlying mechanisms of depressed mood and design efficient treatment pathways, comparatively little was done to characterize mood modulations that remain within the boundaries of a healthy mental functioning. In one placebo-controlled experiments, we applied daily prefrontal transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) at five points in time, and found reliable improvements on self-reported mood evaluation. We replicated this finding in an independent double-blinded placebo-controlled experiment and showed that stimulation over a shorter period of time (3 days) is sufficient to create detectable mood improvements. Taken together, our data show that repeated bilateral prefrontal tDCS can reduce psychological distress in nondepressed individuals., Comment: 14 page, 3 figures

Terdiurnal atmospheric tides induce an S3 radiational ocean tide, similar to radiational tides S1 and S2 in the diurnal and semidiurnal bands. Although of small amplitude, the terdiurnal tide has some intriguing properties. The tide has an unusually pronounced seasonal variation, manifested by annual sidelines here denoted R3 and T3, which causes the tide to nearly vanish during times near an equinox. Forcing is generally largest in the winter hemisphere. Complicating matters, the two sideline frequencies coincide with those of nonlinear compound tides SK3 and SP3. Whether radiational tides or nonlinear tides (or both) are appearing at any given tide gauge can usually be determined by the relative amplitudes and phase differences of the two sidelines. The amplitudes of R3 and T3 are generally comparable; the amplitudes of SK3 and SP3 are not. Proper identification can lead to a small improvement in tidal prediction, but more importantly can lead to improved physical interpretation. An example from recent measurements under the Ross Ice Shelf bears on the role of nonlinearity in interactions between the ocean tide and the floating ice shelf.

Using hourly atmospheric surface pressure field from ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) and from NCEP (National Centers for Environmental Prediction) Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) models, we show that atmospheric pressure fluctuations excite the translational oscillation of the inner core, the so-called Slichter mode, to the sub-nanogal level at the Earth surface. The computation is performed using a normal-mode formalism for a spherical, self-gravitating anelastic PREM-like Earth model. We determine the statistical response in the form of power spectral densities of the degree-one spherical harmonic components of the observed pressure field. Both hypotheses of inverted and non-inverted barometer for the ocean response to pressure forcing are considered. Based on previously computed noise levels, we show that the surface excitation amplitude is below the limit of detection of the superconducting gravimeters, making the Slichter mode detection a challenging instrumental task for the near future.

With resurgent interest in individual differences in perception, cognition and behavioural control, as early indicators of disease, endophenotypes, or a means to relate brain structure to function, behavioural tasks are increasingly being transferred from within-subject settings to between-group or correlational designs. The assumption is that where we know the mechanisms underlying within-subject effects, these effects can be used to measure individual differences in those same mechanisms. However, between-subject variability can arise from an entirely different source from that driving within-subject effects, and here we report a clear-cut demonstration of this. We examined the debated relationship between the visibility of a masked-prime stimulus and the direction of priming it causes (positive or reversed). Such reversal of priming has been hypothesized to reflect an automatic inhibitory mechanism that controls partially activated responses and allows behavioural flexibility. Within subjects, we found an unambiguous systematic transition from reversed priming to positive priming as prime visibility increased, replicated seven times, and using different stimulus manipulations. However, across individuals there was never a relationship between prime discrimination ability and priming. Specifically, these data resolve the controversial debate on visibility and reversed priming, indicating that they arise from independent processes relying on partially shared stimulus signals. More generally, they stand as an exemplar case in which variance between individuals arises from a different source from that produced by stimulus manipulations., Comment: 31 pages, 8 figs, 1 table
