1. Infusion: National Project on Career Education. Handbook on Career Education Infusion.

Abstract

The manual is intended to help educators of hearing impaired students interested in infusing career education into the existing curriculum. An introductory section explains the Comprehensive Career Education Matrix (CCEM), a model whose eight elements (self-awareness, educational awareness, career awareness, economic awareness, decisionmaking, beginning competency, employability skills, and attitudes and appreciations) provide a base for developing career education objectives. Three steps in implementing the model are then addressed: (1) establishing a goal statement, (2) establishing a learning activity, and (3) self-evaluation of teaching. Appendixes include sample evaluation instruments, infusion checklists, and infusion examples. (CL)

2. Library Information System Time-Sharing (LISTS) Project. Final Report.

Abstract

The Library Information System Time-Sharing (LISTS) experiment was based on three innovations in data processing technology: (1) the advent of computer time-sharing on third-generation machines, (2) the development of general-purpose file-management software and (3) the introduction of large, library-oriented data bases. The main body of the report contains: (1) purpose, (2) background and development of LISTS, (3) conduct of the LISTS experiment, (4) problems encountered, (5) results and (6) conclusions. The five appendices cover: (1) on-line circulation simulation, (2) LISTS system users manual, (3) LISTS system users manual for circulation control subsystem at Fullerton Junior College Library, (4) instructions for operating an on-line circulation system and (5) LISTS evaluation questionnaire. Based on this experiment, it appears that automation is an improvement over manual processing in some parts of the acquisitions process, for bibliographic searching of the Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC) records, for circulation control and for production of bookform catalogs. One of the most important results of this experiment was the understanding gained by the participants of what automation can offer for library applications. (NH)

Abstract

This book is designed to provide the basis for a teaching/learning process by which building administrators provide school-age youth with the appropriate social skills necessary for student success. Administrative intervention, an effective method for dealing with discipline problems, is comprised of a sequential set of instructional components and procedures for de-escalating disruptive behavior, obtaining and maintaining instructional control, teaching alternative behaviors, and preparing students for classroom re-entry. Individual sections offer techniques for de-escalating the crisis. stage, obtaining information from the teacher, conducting intensive teaching and teaching interactions, facilitating the student apology, creating behavior contracts with the student, supervising inschool supervision, and dealing with special cases. 4. Cooperating Teacher Remuneration: Where Are We? ATE Bonus Publication.

Abstract

Forty college and university directors of field experiences (from 40 different states) responded to a survey on their payment practices for cooperating teachers. A wide variety of payment practices exists among the states, ranging from no payment, tuition waivers, to various amounts of money. Most directors indicated that their system of payment was consistent with other institutions in their state. The majority of respondents, whose university operated on the semester system, said that there was no difference in payment for quarterly versus semester arrangements. Few changes were noted in the amount paid to cooperating teachers in the past ten years. Fifty percent of the directors knew of no impending pay changes among the institutions in their state. The state board of regents, state legislature, and state educational association were mentioned as having the most influence on payment practices. Sixty-five percent of the respondents said that school administrators were not paid for having a student teacher in the building. Eighteen percent of the directors indicated that they paid teachers for working with early field experience (pre-student teaching) students. It is concluded that, to ascertain if a trend is emerging to change present payment policies regarding cooperating teachers, a broader indepth survey should be made. (FG)

5. Adventures with a Compulsory Computer Literacy Course in the Practicum Year.

Abstract

This paper describes the problems and successes associated with the introduction of a compulsory computer literacy course to approximately 600 professional year students in the Faculty of Education Department at the University of Calgary (Alberta, Canada) during the fall 1984 and spring 1985 semesters. The events leading up to the introduction of the course are explained and descriptions are provided of problems encountered in implementing the course, including budget restrictions; insufficient staffing for course development; lack of available hardware and software; scheduling of professional year student classes; and limited classroom space. On the more positive side, the staff felt that that most course objectives were met, and the majority of students gave the course a favorable rating. It was concluded that: (1) the course should be piloted; (2) instructors must be prepared to spend a great deal of time for teaching and evaluating the course; (3) the course could be used for operational research; (4) the programming component should be reduced and more computer literacy content included; (5) learning theories should be used in course development; and (6) instructors should be prepared to be in a constant state of change. Data for the two semesters are compared for three dimensions of the evaluation: the time allotments for specific topics covered, number and weighting of assignments and examinations toward the grade, and student ratings of the course. 6. Dental Health Center Library and Information Center: A Plan of Action.

The report, based on information gathered by System Development Corporation in its role as consultant to the Division of Dental Health, defines the areas of need for planning an effective operational library and information center within the Division's proposed new Dental Health Center Building, San Francisco. A course of action is plotted that should result in obtaining the necessary information and achieving the coordination necessary to develop an outstanding information resource that meets the needs of the Dental Health Center and other potential users. 7. The Hiring Policies of Selected Iowa Businesses and Industries with Respect to Employment of Blind Persons.

Abstract

An investigation of the hiring policies of Iowa businesses and industries with respect to the employment of blind persons was one purpose of this study. A second purpose was to determine the opinions of blind clients of the Iowa Commission for the Blind concerning the industrial arts program at the Commission. Some findings are: (1) Over 97 percent of businesses and industries indicated a blind person could do more today than 25 years ago, (2) 80 percent agreed that blind persons could work in skilled and professional positions, (3) Over 70 percent felt blind persons could work at highly skilled jobs, (4) 75 percent were willing to hire a properly trained blind person, and (5) A majority of the clients indicated they were helped by the industrial arts program through building of self-confidence, changing of attitudes, and developing salable skills. Some conclusions are: (1) Business and industry pay lip service to the idea that blind persons can work in skilled and professional positions, (2) Blindness was a greater deterrent to employment than either education or training requirements, and (3) Blind clients are not aware of the real purpose of the industrial arts program at the school. Further study was recommended. This Ed.D. thesis was submitted to the University of Northern Colorado. (GR)
