This experiment will integrate a VBB (Very Broad Band) two axis seismometer, a three axis Short Period seismometer and a series of environmental sensors for pressure, infra-sounds and temperature. IPGP (France) has the overall responsibility of the experiment and is responsible for the VBB and environmental sensors. ETHZ (Switzerland) is responsible for the electronics of the experiment and JPL (USA) for the SP (Short Period) sensors. SEIS instrument was first proposed and accepted for NetLander mission (and will also be in charge of data acquisition for SPICE experiment). This seismic package should also be proposed for future missions.

The detection of liquid water is of prime interest and should have deep implications in the understanding of the Martian hydrological cycle and also in exobiology. In the frame of the 2007 joint CNES-NASA mission to Mars, a set of 4 NETLANDERS developed by an European consortium is expected to be launched in June 2007. We propose to use a second spacecraft going or landing to Mars to release near one of the Netlander a series of artificial metallic meteorites, in order to perform an active seismic experiment providing a seismic profile of the crust and subsurface.

The identification of fluvial deposits on Mars is impaired by modifying geological processes. An analysis of surface patterns of superimposed dunes and channels in paleoflood environments in Washington State and Australia can yield information on buried surfaces. Additional information is contained in the original extended abstract.

Geological and theoretical modeling do indicate that, most probably, a significant part of the volatiles present in the past is presently stocked within the Martian subsurface as ground ice, and as clay minerals (water constitution). In the frame of the 2005 joint CNES-NASA mission to Mars, a set of 4 NETLANDERs developed by an European consortium is expected to be launched between 2005 and 2007. The geophysical package of each lander will include a geo-radar (GPR experiment), a magnetometer (MAGNET experiment), a seismometer (SEIS experiment) and a meteorological package (ATMIS experiment). The NETLANDER mission offers a unique opportunity to explore simultaneously the subsurface as well as deeper layers of the planetary interior on 4 different landing sites. The complementary contributions of all these geophysical soundings onboard the NETLANDER stations are presented.

Our present understanding of the interior structure of Mars is mostly based on the interpretation of gravity and rotation data, the chemistry of the SNC (shergottites, nakhlites, chassignites) meteoroids, and a comparison with the much better-known interior structure of the Earth. However geophysical information from previous missions have been insufficient to determine the deep internal structure of the planet. Therefore the state and size of the core and the depth and type of mantle discontinuities are unknown. Most previous seismic experiments have indeed failed, either due to a launch failure (as for the Optimism seismometer onboard the small surface stations of Mars 96) or after failure on Mars (as for the Viking 1 seismometer). The remaining Viking 2 seismometer did not produce a convincing marsquake detection, basically due to too strong wind sensitivity and too low resolution in the teleseismic frequency band. After almost a decade of continuous activity and proposals, the first network mission to Mars, NetLander (NL), is expected to be launched between 2005 and 2007. One of the main scientific objectives of this four-lander network mission will be the determination of the internal structure of the planet using a geophysical package. This package will have a seismometer, a magnetometer, and a geodetic experiment, allowing a complementary approach that will yield many new constraints on the mineralogy and temperature of the mantle and core of the planet.

Magellan radar data show the surface of Venus to contain a wide range of geologic features (large volcanoes, extensive rift valleys, etc.). Although networks of interconnecting zones of deformation are identified, a system of spreading ridges and subduction zones like those that dominate the tectonic style of the Earth do not appear to be present. In addition, the absence of a mantle low-viscosity zone suggests a strong link between mantle dynamics and the surface. As a natural follow-on to the Magellan mission, establishing a network of seismometers on Venus will provide detailed quantitative information on the large scale interior structure of the planet. When analyzed in conjunction with image, gravity, and topography information, these data will aid in constraining mechanisms that drive surface deformation.

Recent work on the origin of wrinkle ridges suggests that they are compressional tectonic features whose subsurface structure is not understood. Some characteristics of Martian wrinkle ridges are reviewed which suggest that they are the surface expression of thrust faults that extend through much of the lithosphere.

The properties of freeze-dried dilute dispersions of dust in water ice are of considerable interest in studies of comet nucleus mantles. The formation of a rind residue produced by the sublimation of water ice containing various amounts of fine clay particles may be an important process. A simulation of the development of the dry dust rind on the surface of comets is presented. This rind is the result of preferential ice sublimation. The development and disruption of this rind and its subsequent levitation by water vapor flow is studied. The most interesting rind simulant is produced by dispersing 0.1 micron particles of montmorillonite in water in concentrations of 10%, 1%, and 0.1%. These dispersions are then sprayed into liquid nitrogen in the form of 100 micron droplets. The frozen droplets are then freeze-dried in a vacuum which prevents the ice temperature from rising above -30 C. Sublimation of the nitrogen and the water produced dry rinds. The most striking result was the development of large cohesive matrices of individual clay particles, and in some cases a continuous cohesive crust. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations reveal that the material formed by freeze-drying the 0.1% dispersion does not retain the original spherical shape of the sprayed 100 micron droplets; instead it consists of a continuous filamentary network, as shown in the SEM stereo micrographs.

The properties of freeze dried dilute dispersions of dust in water are of considerable interest in studies of sedimentary processes in the polar regions of Mars. The formation of a rind residue due to the sublimation of water ice containing various amounts of clay may be an important step in these processes. Such phenomena may occur as the result of seasonal or long term (climatic) sublimation of dirty ice caps on Mars. The development and disruption of dust residues on the surface of ice dust mixtures as a result of preferential ice sublimation were simulated in the laboratory. The characteristics of the resulting particles are described and a scenario for the formation of a Martian circumpolar dune field is suggested.
