We present an experimental determination of the $4 \: S_{1/2} \rightarrow 6\: S_{1/2}$ transition frequency in atomic potassium, $^{39}$K, using direct frequency comb spectroscopy. The output of a stabilized optical frequency comb was used to excite a thermal atomic vapor. The repetition rate of the frequency comb was scanned and the transitions were excited using step-wise two-photon excitation. The center of gravity frequency for the transition was found to be $\nu_\textrm{cog} = 822\, 951\, 698.09(13)$ MHz and the measured hyperfine $A$ coefficient of the $6\: S_{1/2}$ state was $21.93(11)$ MHz. The measurements are in agreement with previous values and represent an improvement by a factor of 700 in the uncertainty of the center of gravity measurement., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Experimental searches for the electron electric dipole moment (EDM) probe new physics beyond the Standard Model. The current best EDM limit was set by the ACME Collaboration [Science \textbf{343}, 269 (2014)], constraining time reversal symmetry ($T$) violating physics at the TeV energy scale. ACME used optical pumping to prepare a coherent superposition of ThO $H^3\Delta_1$ states that have aligned electron spins. Spin precession due to the molecule's internal electric field was measured to extract the EDM. We report here on an improved method for preparing this spin-aligned state of the electron by using STIRAP. We demonstrate a transfer efficiency of $75\pm5\%$, representing a significant gain in signal for a next generation EDM experiment. We discuss the particularities of implementing STIRAP in systems such as ours, where molecular ensembles with large phase-space distributions are transfered via weak molecular transitions with limited laser power and limited optical access.

Experimental data from spacecraft providing impact penetration rates and cratering for metallic targets is reviewed. Data includes NASA Explorers 16 and 23 and the Pegasus series, the second US-UK satellite Ariel 2, Space Shuttle STS-3 (MFE), recovered surfaces on Solar Max Satellite, The Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) and EuReCa TiCCE. Factors concerning exposure to the environment are considered and, especially, material properties which affect the penetration resistance. Reference to a common material, Aluminum alloy 2024-T3, is effected and the data then compared to define firstly an average impact flux over the period. The data is examined, in the context of possible satellite and space debris growth rates, to determine the constancy of the flux. This also provides strong constraints on the current space debris component. It is found that the impact data are consistent with domination by natural meteoroid sources. Growth rates are not evident within the period 1980-1990 and Eureca TiCCE fluxes in 1993, for particles penetrating foils of around 10 microns thickness, supports the constancy of the flux. At larger dimensions the 1993 Eureca TiCCE fluxes show an 8-fold increase but this is considered not inconsistent with the selective exposure to meteoroid streams of a satellite stabilized in heliocentric co-ordinates for an 11 month period.

Solution of the steady 2-D Euler equations using mesh embedding, or local grid refinement, with a cell-centered finite volume scheme is investigated. Embedded regions which are topologically similar to the global grid are considered. An isoenergetic model for the governing equations is used in Jameson's finite volume multistage scheme with modifications to the boundary conditions and smoothing. A detailed study of the embedding interface flux and smoothing formulations is conducted. Taylor expansion analysis reveals that local second order spatial accuracy is not possible if a conservative interface flux formulation is used. The analysis also gives constraints for local first order accuracy. An energy stability analysis indicates that downwind weighting of interface fluxes causes local instabilities. Analysis shows that conservative interface smoothing formulations must have a locally convective component, but that correct interface formulations allow globally dissipative smoothing. Embedded mesh solutions obtained with this scheme are presented for a transonic airfoil. They show that if embedding interfaces are close to the shocks, then small modifications in the interface location can have large effects on converge and solution accuracy.

A technique for the solution of the conically self-similar form of the Euler equations is described. Solutions for the flow past a flat-plate delta wing at angle of attack are presented. These solutions show strong leading edge vortices with large total pressure losses in the cores. A study of the effects of various computational parameters on the total pressure loss is made. An explanation for the cause of the total pressure loss is presented. It is shown to be consistent with the results for both a quasi-one-dimensional model problem and the conically self-similar flow past the flat-plate delta wing.

Two interpretation aids, 'The Image Analysis Guide for Wheat/Small Grains Inventories' and 'The United States and Canadian Great Plains Regional Keys', were developed during LACIE phase 2 and implemented during phase 3 in order to provide analysts with a better understanding of the expected ranges in color variation of signatures for individual biostages and of the temporal sequences of LANDSAT signatures. The keys were tested using operational LACIE data, and the results demonstrate that their use provides improved labeling accuracy in all analyst experience groupings, in all geographic areas within the U.S. Great Plains, and during all periods of crop development.
