The Atacama Cosmology Telescope Data Release 6 (ACT DR6) power spectrum is expected to provide state-of-the-art cosmological constraints, with an associated need for precise error modeling. In this paper we design, and evaluate the performance of, an analytic covariance matrix prescription for the DR6 power spectrum that sufficiently accounts for the complicated ACT map properties. We use recent advances in the literature to handle sharp features in the signal and noise power spectra, and account for the effect of map-level anisotropies on the covariance matrix. In including inhomogeneous survey depth information, the resulting covariance matrix prescription is structurally similar to that used in the $\textit{Planck}$ Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) analysis. We quantify the performance of our prescription using comparisons to Monte Carlo simulations, finding better than $3\%$ agreement. This represents an improvement from a simpler, pre-existing prescription, which differs from simulations by $\sim16\%$. We develop a new method to correct the analytic covariance matrix using simulations, after which both prescriptions achieve better than $1\%$ agreement. This correction method outperforms a commonly used alternative, where the analytic correlation matrix is assumed to be accurate when correcting the covariance. In this report, we introduce INTELLECT-1, the first 10 billion parameter language model collaboratively trained across the globe, demonstrating that large-scale model training is no longer confined to large corporations but can be achieved through a distributed, community-driven approach. INTELLECT-1 was trained on 1 trillion tokens using up to 14 concurrent nodes distributed across 3 continents, with contributions from 30 independent compute providers dynamically joining and leaving the training process, while maintaining 83-96% compute utilization and 36.2-41.4% model FLOPS utilization. We leverage PRIME, our scalable distributed training framework designed for fault-tolerant, high-performance training on unreliable, globally distributed nodes. Key innovations in PRIME include the ElasticDeviceMesh, which manages dynamic global process groups for fault-tolerant communication across the internet and local process groups for communication within a node, live checkpoint recovery kernels, and a hybrid DiLoCo-FSDP2 implementation. Using PRIME with DiLoCo and our custom int8 all-reduce, we achieve a 400x reduction in communication bandwidth compared to traditional data-parallel training settings while delivering comparable performance. Advanced Air Mobility aircraft require energy efficient flight plans to be economically viable. This paper defines minimum energy direct trajectories between waypoints for Lift+Cruise electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Energy consumption is optimized over accelerated and cruise flight profiles with consideration of mode transitions. Because eVTOL operations start and end in hover for vertical take-off and landing, hover waypoints are utilized. Energy consumption is modeled as a function of airspeed for each flight mode, providing the basis to prove energy optimality for multi-mode traversal. Wind magnitude and direction dictate feasibility of straight-line traversal because Lift+Cruise aircraft point into the relative wind direction while hovering but also have a maximum heading rate constraint. Energy and power use for an experimentally validated QuadPlane small eVTOL aircraft are characterized with respect to airspeed and acceleration in all flight modes. Optimal QuadPlane traversals are presented. Constraints on acceleration and wind are derived for straight-line QuadPlane traversal. Results show an optimal QuadPlane $500m$ traversal between hover waypoints saves $71\%$ energy compared to pure vertical flight traversal for a representative case study with a direct $4m/s$ crosswind. Energy optimal eVTOL direct trajectory definition with transitions to and from hover is novel to this work. The high electron temperature in galaxy clusters ($>1\,$keV or $>10^7\,$K) leads to corrections at the level of a few percent in their thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect signatures. Both the size and frequency dependence of these corrections, which are known as relativistic temperature corrections, depend upon the temperature of the objects. In this work we exploit this effect to measure the average temperature of a stack of Compton-$y$ selected clusters. Specifically, we apply the "spectroscopic method" and search for the temperature that best fits the clusters' signal measured at frequencies from 30 to 545 GHz by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and Planck satellite. We measure the average temperature of clusters detected in the ACT maps to be $8.5\pm 2.4\,$keV, with an additional systematic error of comparable amplitude dominated by passband uncertainty. Upcoming surveys, such as the Simons Observatory and CMB-S4, have the potential to dramatically improve upon these measurements and thereby enable precision studies of cluster temperatures with millimeter observations. We introduce ImmerseDiffusion, an end-to-end generative audio model that produces 3D immersive soundscapes conditioned on the spatial, temporal, and environmental conditions of sound objects. ImmerseDiffusion is trained to generate first-order ambisonics (FOA) audio, which is a conventional spatial audio format comprising four channels that can be rendered to multichannel spatial output. The proposed generative system is composed of a spatial audio codec that maps FOA audio to latent components, a latent diffusion model trained based on various user input types, namely, text prompts, spatial, temporal and environmental acoustic parameters, and optionally a spatial audio and text encoder trained in a Contrastive Language and Audio Pretraining (CLAP) style. We propose metrics to evaluate the quality and spatial adherence of the generated spatial audio. Finally, we assess the model performance in terms of generation quality and spatial conformance, comparing the two proposed modes: ``descriptive", which uses spatial text prompts) and ``parametric", which uses non-spatial text prompts and spatial parameters. We generalise Phinney's 'practical theorem' to account for modified graviton dispersion relations motivated by certain cosmological scenarios. Focusing on specific examples, we show how such modifications can induce characteristic localised distortions, bumps, in the frequency profile of the stochastic gravitational wave background emitted from distant binary sources. We concentrate on gravitational waves at nano-Hertz frequencies probed by pulsar timing arrays, and we forecast the capabilities of future experiments to accurately probe parameters controlling modified dispersion relations. Our predictions are based on properties of gravitational waves emitted in the first inspiral phase of the binary process, and do not rely on assumptions of non-linear effects occurring during the binary merging phase, Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

Additive manufacture (AM) involves creating a part layer by layer and is a rapidly evolving manufacturing process. It has multiple strengths that apply to space-based optics, such as the ability to consolidate multiple parts into one, reducing the number of interfaces. The process also allows for greater mass reduction, making parts more cost-effective to launch, achieved by optimising the shape for intended use or creating intricate geometries like lattices. However, previous studies have highlighted issues associated with the AM process. For example, when trying to achieve high-precision optical surfaces on AM parts, the latticing on the underside of mirrors can provide insufficient support during machining, resulting in the quilting effect. This paper builds on previous work and explores such challenges further. This will be implemented by investigating ways to apply AM to a deployable mirror from a CubeSat project called A-DOT. The reflective surface has a spherical radius of curvature of 682 mm and approximate external dimensions of 106 mm x 83 mm. The aim is to produce two mirrors that will take full advantage of AM design benefits and account for the challenges in printing and machining a near-net shape. The designs will have reduced mass by using selected internal lattice designs and topology-optimised connection points, resulting in two mirrors with mass reduction targets of 50% and 70%. Once printed in aluminium using laser powder bed fusion, the reflective surface will be created using single point diamond turning. Despite the established role of additive manufacturing (AM) in aerospace and medical fields, its adoption in astronomy remains low. Encouraging AM integration in a risk-averse community necessitates documentation and dissemination of previous case studies. The objective of this study is to create the first review of AM in astronomy hardware, answering: where is AM currently being used in astronomy, what is the status of its adoption, and what challenges are preventing its widespread use? The review starts with an introduction to astronomical instruments size/cost challenges, alongside the role of manufacturing innovation. This is followed by highlighting the benefits/challenges of AM and used materials/processes in both space-based and ground-based applications. Spaced-based mirrors are a developing use-case for Additive Manufacturing (AM), the process that builds a part layer-by-layer. The increased geometric freedom results in novel and advantageous designs previously unachievable. Conventionally, mirror fabrication uses subtractive (milling & turning), formative (casting) and fabricative (bonding) manufacturing methods; however, an additive method can simplify an assembly by consolidating individual components into one, and incorporating lattice structures and function optimised geometries to reduce the mass of components, which are beneficial to space-based instrumentation as mass and volume are constrained. Attention must be given to the printability of the design - build orientation and powder/resin removal from lattices and internal cavities are challenges when designing for AM. This paper will describe the design, manufacture and metrology of mirror prototypes from the Active Deployable Optical Telescope (ADOT) 6U CubeSat project. The AM mirror is 52mm in diameter, 10mm deep, with a convex 100mm radius of curvature reflective surface and deploys telescopically on three booms. The objectives of the designs were to combine the boom mounting features into the mirror and to lightweight both prototypes by 50% and 70% using internal, thin-walled lattices. Four final lattice designs were downselected through simulation and prototype validation. Prototypes were printed in the aluminium alloy AlSi10Mg using powder bed fusion and fused silica using stereolithography. Aluminium mirrors were single point diamond turned and had surface roughness measurements taken. The relationship between measures of stenosis and microvascular resistance is of importance due to medical decisions being based on these values. This research investigates the impact of varying microvascular resistance on fractional flow reserve (FFR) and hyperaemic stenosis resistance (hSR). Microvascular resistance is classified using hyperaemic microvascular resistance (hMR). Additionally, hMR using the upstream pressure value (hMRPa) has also been calculated and is compared to hMR measured conventionally. Tests were conducted at three different degrees of stenosis (quantified by percent area) in a coronary flow circuit with varying downstream resistance to simulate the microvasculature. Pressure and flow values are recorded across the stenosed section, allowing for calculation of the diagnostic indexes. Results indicate that for a constant degree of stenosis, FFR would increase with increasing microvascular resistance while hSR would remain almost constant. hMRPa was found to approach hMR as the stenosis severity decreased, and the pressure gradient decreased. In the results shown here, with sufficiently high downstream resistance, an 84% stenosis could produce an FFR value over 0.8. This result suggests that there is the potential for misdiagnosis of the severity of stenosis when combined with elevated microvascular resistance. Additive manufacturing (AM; 3D printing) in aluminium using laser powder bed fusion provides a new design space for lightweight mirror production. Printing layer-by-layer enables the use of intricate lattices for mass reduction, as well as organic shapes generated by topology optimisation, resulting in mirrors optimised for function as opposed to subtractive machining. However, porosity, a common AM defect, is present in printed aluminium and it is a result of the printing environment being either too hot or too cold, or gas entrapped bubbles within the aluminium powder. When present in an AM mirror substrates, porosity manifests as pits on the reflective surface, which increases micro-roughness and therefore scattered light. There are different strategies to reduce the impact of porosity: elimination during printing, coating the aluminium print in nickel phosphorous, or to apply a heat and pressure treatment to close the pores, commonly known as a hot isostatic press (HIP). This paper explores the application of HIP on printed aluminium substrates intended for mirror production using single point diamond turning (SPDT). The objective of the HIP is to reduce porosity whilst targeting a small grain growth within the aluminium, which is important in allowing the SPDT to generate surfaces with low micro-roughness. For this study, three disks, 50 mm diameter by 5 mm, were printed in AlSi10Mg at 0 deg, 45 deg, and 90 deg with respect to the build plate. X-ray computed tomography (XCT) was conducted before and after the HIP cycle to confirm the effectiveness of HIP to close porosity. The disks were SPDT and the micro-roughness evaluated. Additive manufacturing (AM; 3D printing) has clear benefits in the production of lightweight mirrors for astronomy: it can create optimised lightweight structures and combine multiple components into one. New capabilities in AM ceramics, silicon carbide infiltrated with silicon and fused silica, offer the possibility to combine the design benefits of AM with a material suitable for visible, ultraviolet and X-ray applications. This paper will introduce the printing methods and post-processing steps to convert AM ceramic samples into reflective mirrors. Aims: The presence of coronary tandem lesions poses a significant challenge for the accurate diagnosis and management of coronary artery diseases. This study set out to provide a deeper understanding of the haemodynamic interactions between tandem obstructive coronary lesions and their impact on different haemodynamic diagnostic parameters. Methods and Results: Using a computational fluid dynamic model, validated against in vitro laboratory experiments, we investigated the various combinations of moderate and severe stenoses interchangeably located in the proximal and distal segments of the artery. The investigation was conducted using two diagnostic parameters: one hyperaemic-based, i.e., FFR, and one rest-based, i.e., iFR, technique, both of which are commonly used to assess the physiological significance of coronary stenoses. The three main findings of this work are: (a) the recovery distance (the immediate local distance affected by the presence of stenosis) is much shorter for the rest-measured diagnostic parameter compared with the hyperaemic-measured diagnostic parameter; (b) pressure drop measurements immediately downstream of the stenotic sections overestimate the significance of stenoses, and (c) the presence of a moderate stenosis downstream of a severe stenosis increases FFR value (faster FFR recovery). Conclusion: These findings enhance our understanding of the diagnostic accuracy of hyperaemic-based and rest-based physiological diagnostic coronary assessments and the nuances of using these different techniques when assessing tandem coronary stenoses. This understanding can help inform tailored therapeutic approaches for the management of coronary artery disease.

Eigenmaps are important in analysis, geometry, and machine learning, especially in nonlinear dimension reduction. Approximation of the eigenmaps of a Laplace operator depends crucially on the scaling parameter $\epsilon$. If $\epsilon$ is too small or too large, then the approximation is inaccurate or completely breaks down. However, an analytic expression for the optimal $\epsilon$ is out of reach. In our work, we use some explicitly solvable models and Monte Carlo simulations to find the approximately optimal range of $\epsilon$ that gives, on average, relatively accurate approximation of the eigenmaps. Numerically we can consider several model situations where eigen-coordinates can be computed analytically, including intervals with uniform and weighted measures, squares, tori, spheres, and the Sierpinski gasket. In broader terms, we intend to study eigen-coordinates on weighted Riemannian manifolds, possibly with boundary, and on some metric measure spaces, such as fractals.

We present ConvoCache, a conversational caching system that solves the problem of slow and expensive generative AI models in spoken chatbots. ConvoCache finds a semantically similar prompt in the past and reuses the response. In this paper we evaluate ConvoCache on the DailyDialog dataset. We find that ConvoCache can apply a UniEval coherence threshold of 90% and respond to 89% of prompts using the cache with an average latency of 214ms, replacing LLM and voice synthesis that can take over 1s. To further reduce latency we test prefetching and find limited usefulness. Prefetching with 80% of a request leads to a 63% hit rate, and a drop in overall coherence. We conducted extensive experiments on domain adaptation of the Meta-Llama-3-70B-Instruct model on SEC data, exploring its performance on both general and domain-specific benchmarks. Our focus included continual pre-training (CPT) and model merging, aiming to enhance the model's domain-specific capabilities while mitigating catastrophic forgetting. Through this study, we evaluated the impact of integrating financial regulatory data into a robust language model and examined the effectiveness of our model merging techniques in preserving and improving the model's instructive abilities. A corporate bond trader in a typical sell side institution such as a bank provides liquidity to the market participants by buying/selling securities and maintaining an inventory. Upon receiving a request for a buy/sell price quote (RFQ), the trader provides a quote by adding a spread over a \textit{prevalent market price}. For illiquid bonds, the market price is harder to observe, and traders often resort to available benchmark bond prices (such as MarketAxess, Bloomberg, etc.). In \cite{Bergault2023ModelingLI}, the concept of \textit{Fair Transfer Price} for an illiquid corporate bond was introduced which is derived from an infinite horizon stochastic optimal control problem (for maximizing the trader's expected P\&L, regularized by the quadratic variation). In this paper, we consider the same optimization objective, however, we approach the estimation of an optimal bid-ask spread quoting strategy in a data driven manner and show that it can be learned using Reinforcement Learning. Efficiently post-training large language models remains a challenging task due to the vast computational resources required. We present Spectrum, a method that accelerates LLM training by selectively targeting layer modules based on their signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and freezing the remaining modules. Our approach, which utilizes an algorithm to compute module SNRs prior to training, has shown to effectively match the performance of full fine-tuning while reducing GPU memory usage. Experiments comparing Spectrum to existing methods such as QLoRA demonstrate its effectiveness in terms of model quality and VRAM efficiency in distributed environments.

Given the central importance of positive parent and infant-early childhood mental health to children's long-term mental health and development, it is important to examine a wide range of approaches that show promise for strengthening supports for parent and infant-early childhood mental health in home visiting programs, especially programs serving diverse families. This report provides a view of promising strategies from the perspective of staff in home visiting programs that span multiple types and models and serve families from different cultural, racial/ ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds. Following a brief discussion of the project's methods for identifying and learning from a sample of home visiting programs, the report examines key strategies for promoting parent and child mental health as described by home visiting staff and expert respondents. The report concludes with recommendations for policy, program implementation supports, and research that could help advance the field's understanding and use of the most effective strategies. Home-based child care (HBCC) providers are a varied group that includes listed providers and unlisted providers who do and do not receive payment. HBCC is especially prevalent in communities of color, communities with high concentrations of people from immigrant backgrounds, areas of concentrated poverty, and rural communities. Yet, research on HBCC lags behind research on center-based child care and early education (CCEE), and the least is known about unlisted providers who do not appear on state or national provider lists and work outside the formal systems supporting CCEE programs. This brief focuses on describing the characteristics of the communities in which unlisted HBCC providers live and, for many, where they typically care for children. It uses the 2019 National Survey of Early Care and Education (NSECE), the American Community Survey (ACS), and the Child Opportunity Index (COI) 2.0.

It is generally accepted that the Moon accreted from the disk formed by an impact between the proto-Earth and impactor, but its details are highly debated. Some models suggest that a Mars-sized impactor formed a silicate melt-rich (vapor-poor) disk around Earth, whereas other models suggest that a highly energetic impact produced a silicate vapor-rich disk. Such a vapor-rich disk, however, may not be suitable for the Moon formation, because moonlets, building blocks of the Moon, of 100 m-100 km may experience strong gas drag and fall onto Earth on a short timescale, failing to grow further. This problem may be avoided if large moonlets ($\gg 100$ km) form very quickly by streaming instability, which is a process to concentrate particles enough to cause gravitational collapse and rapid formation of planetesimals or moonlets. Here, we investigate the effect of the streaming instability in the Moon-forming disk for the first time and find that this instability can quickly form $\sim 100$ km-sized moonlets. However, these moonlets are not large enough to avoid strong drag and they still fall onto Earth quickly. This suggests that the vapor-rich disks may not form the large Moon, and therefore the models that produce vapor-poor disks are supported. This result is applicable to general impact-induced moon-forming disks, supporting the previous suggestion that small planets ($<1.6 R_\oplus$) are good candidates to host large moons because their impact-induced disks would be likely vapor-poor. We find a limited role of streaming instability in a satellite formation in an impact-induced disk, whereas it plays a key role during planet formation., Comment: Accepted for Publication in PSJ

Spatial variations in the cosmic electron density after reionization generate cosmic microwave background anisotropies via Thomson scattering, a process known as the ``patchy screening" effect. In this paper, we propose a new estimator for the patchy screening effect that is designed to mitigate biases from the dominant foreground signals. We use it to measure the cross-correlation between \textit{unWISE} galaxies and patchy screening, the latter measured by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and \textit{Planck} satellite. We report the first detection of the patchy screening effect, with the statistical significance of the cross-correlation exceeding $7\sigma$. This measurement directly probes the distribution of electrons around these galaxies and provides strong evidence that gas is more extended than the underlying dark matter. By comparing our measurements to electron profiles extracted from simulations, we demonstrate the power of these observations to constrain galaxy evolution models. We determine hidden conformal symmetries behind the evolution equations of black hole perturbations in a vector-tensor theory of gravity. Such hidden symmetries are valid everywhere in the exterior region of a spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat black hole geometry. They allow us to factorize second order operators controlling the black hole perturbations into a product of two commuting first order operators. As a consequence, we are able to analytically determine the most general time-dependent solutions for the black hole perturbation equations. We focus on solutions belonging to a highest weight representation of a conformal symmetry, showing that they correspond to quasi-bound states with an ingoing behaviour into the black hole horizon, and exponential decay at spatial infinity. Their time-dependence is characterized by purely imaginary frequencies, with imaginary parts separated by integer numbers, as the overtones of quasi-normal modes in General Relativity., Comment: 22 pages, no figures

Using the 2019 National Survey of Early Care and Education (NSECE), this brief focuses on unlisted providers' caregiving histories, motivations, and recent experiences with professional supports.

In 2019, more than 5 million providers cared for one or more children either in their own home or in a child's home. Home-based child care (HBCC) providers are a varied group that includes both listed providers and unlisted providers who do and do not receive payment. HBCC is especially prevalent in communities of color, communities with high concentrations of people from immigrant backgrounds, areas of concentrated poverty, and rural communities. Yet, research on HBCC lags behind research on center-based child care and early education (CCEE), and the least is known about unlisted providers who do not appear on state or national provider lists and work outside the formal systems supporting CCEE programs. Using the 2019 National Survey of Early Care and Education (NSECE), this brief focuses on the demographic, educational, economic, and health and wellbeing characteristics of unlisted HBCC providers.

We present tomographic measurements of structure growth using cross-correlations of Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) DR6 and Planck CMB lensing maps with the unWISE Blue and Green galaxy samples, which span the redshift ranges $0.2 \lesssim z \lesssim 1.1$ and $0.3 \lesssim z \lesssim 1.8$, respectively. We improve on prior unWISE cross-correlations not just by making use of the new, high-precision ACT DR6 lensing maps, but also by including additional spectroscopic data for redshift calibration and by analysing our measurements with a more flexible theoretical model. An extensive suite of systematic and null tests within a blind analysis framework ensures that our results are robust. We determine the amplitude of matter fluctuations at low redshifts ($z\simeq 0.2-1.6$), finding $S_8 \equiv \sigma_8 (\Omega_m / 0.3)^{0.5} = 0.813 \pm 0.021$ using the ACT cross-correlation alone and $S_8 = 0.810 \pm 0.015$ with a combination of Planck and ACT cross-correlations; these measurements are fully consistent with the predictions from primary CMB measurements assuming standard structure growth. The addition of Baryon Acoustic Oscillation data breaks the degeneracy between $\sigma_8$ and $\Omega_m$, allowing us to measure $\sigma_8 = 0.813 \pm 0.020$ from the cross-correlation of unWISE with ACT and $\sigma_8 = 0.813\pm 0.015$ from the combination of cross-correlations with ACT and Planck. These results also agree with the expectations from primary CMB extrapolations in $\Lambda$CDM cosmology; the consistency of $\sigma_8$ derived from our two redshift samples at $z \sim 0.6$ and $1.1$ provides a further check of our cosmological model. The Robotics Major at the University of Michigan was successfully launched in the 2022-23 academic year as an innovative step forward to better serve students, our communities, and our society. Building on our guiding principle of "Robotics with Respect" and our larger Robotics Pathways model, the Michigan Robotics Major was designed to define robotics as a true academic discipline with both equity and excellence as our highest priorities. Understanding that talent is equally distributed but opportunity is not, the Michigan Robotics Major has embraced an adaptable curriculum that is accessible through a diversity of student pathways and enables successful and sustained career-long participation in robotics, AI, and automation professions. The results after our planning efforts (2019-22) and first academic year (2022-23) have been highly encouraging: more than 100 students declared Robotics as their major, completion of the Robotics major by our first two graduates, soaring enrollments in our Robotics classes, thriving partnerships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities. This document provides our original curricular proposal for the Robotics Undergraduate Program at the University of Michigan, submitted to the Michigan Association of State Universities in April 2022 and approved in June 2022. We present a cross-correlation analysis between $1'$ resolution total intensity and polarization observations from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) at 150 and 220 GHz and 15$''$ mid-infrared photometry from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) over 107 12.5$^\circ\times$12.5$^\circ$ patches of sky. We detect a spatially isotropic signal in the WISE$\times$ACT $TT$ cross power spectrum at 30$\sigma$ significance that we interpret as the correlation between the cosmic infrared background at ACT frequencies and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission from galaxies in WISE, i.e., the cosmic PAH background. Within the Milky Way, the Galactic dust $TT$ spectra are generally well-described by power laws in $\ell$ over the range 10$^3 < \ell < $10$^4$, but there is evidence both for variability in the power law index and for non-power law behavior in some regions. We measure a positive correlation between WISE total intensity and ACT $E$-mode polarization at 1000$ < \ell \lesssim $6000 at $>$3$\sigma$ in each of 35 distinct $\sim$100 deg$^2$ regions of the sky, suggesting alignment between Galactic density structures and the local magnetic field persists to sub-parsec physical scales in these regions. The distribution of $TE$ amplitudes in this $\ell$ range across all 107 regions is biased to positive values, while there is no evidence for such a bias in the $TB$ spectra. This work constitutes the highest-$\ell$ measurements of the Galactic dust $TE$ spectrum to date and indicates that cross-correlation with high-resolution mid-infrared measurements of dust emission is a promising tool for constraining the spatial statistics of dust emission at millimeter wavelengths., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, submitted to ApJ

Observations of the millimeter sky contain valuable information on a number of signals, including the blackbody cosmic microwave background (CMB), Galactic emissions, and the Compton-$y$ distortion due to the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect. Extracting new insight into cosmological and astrophysical questions often requires combining multi-wavelength observations to spectrally isolate one component. In this work, we present a new arcminute-resolution Compton-$y$ map, which traces out the line-of-sight-integrated electron pressure, as well as maps of the CMB in intensity and E-mode polarization, across a third of the sky (around 13,000 sq.~deg.). We produce these through a joint analysis of data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) Data Release 4 and 6 at frequencies of roughly 93, 148, and 225 GHz, together with data from the \textit{Planck} satellite at frequencies between 30 GHz and 545 GHz. We present detailed verification of an internal linear combination pipeline implemented in a needlet frame that allows us to efficiently suppress Galactic contamination and account for spatial variations in the ACT instrument noise. These maps provide a significant advance, in noise levels and resolution, over the existing \textit{Planck} component-separated maps and will enable a host of science goals including studies of cluster and galaxy astrophysics, inferences of the cosmic velocity field, primordial non-Gaussianity searches, and gravitational lensing reconstruction of the CMB., Comment: The Compton-y map and associated products will be made publicly available upon publication of the paper. Statisticians and data scientists find insights that help lead to better understanding and better outcomes. When clients and managers come to us for help (and even when they don't), we want to share our advice. While we should be free to share our recommendations, we need to be clear about what the data is telling us and what is based "only on our judgment". Gelman, et. al. wrote "As we have learned from the replication crisis sweeping the biomedical and social sciences, it is frighteningly easy for motivated researchers working in isolation to arrive at favored conclusions-whether inadvertently or intentionally." One senior business leader I know said, "if you have data, great; if we're just going on intuition we can use mine". However, having data isn't enough. We need to be rigorous in our analysis to avoid finding insights that aren't supported. Early Head Start is a comprehensive, two-generation federal initiative for low-income pregnant women and families who have infants and toddlers ages 3 or younger. The Head Start Program Performance Standards (HSPPS) require center-based and family child care Early Head Start programs to "provide responsive care, effective teaching, and an organized learning environment that promotes healthy development and children's skill growth…" (45 CFR §1302.31). The goal of this report is to provide a descriptive snapshot of overall quality in Early Head Start classrooms, with a focus on the quality of the teacher-child relationship. In addition, it examines how classroom practices and other features of the classroom are associated with teacher--child relationships, and whether teacher-child relationship quality in Early Head Start is associated with infant and toddler outcomes. The findings broaden the knowledge about the quality of teacher-child relationships in early care and education settings and how it might be improved to better support infants and toddlers. Understanding quality in Early Head Start classrooms can help inform training and technical assistance, professional development, and other quality improvement efforts. This report uses data collected from the 2018 round of Baby FACES. Baby FACES 2018 is a nationally representative, descriptive study of Early Head Start programs, centers, teachers and classrooms, and enrolled families and children. The study, conducted at a single point in time, explored classroom processes and teacher-child relationships in depth, using multiple observation-based measures of classrooms and teachers and teacher-report measures. This report includes data from surveys of children's parents, teachers, and center and program directors, as well as teacher reports on children's development.

In spring 2020, in response to the COVID-19 (for coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic, many early care and education centers, including Head Start centers, closed their physical buildings and changed their operations to virtual. Because of health and safety restrictions, OPRE was unable to directly assess children's skills in spring 2020 for the Head Start Family and Child Experiences Survey (FACES 2019). However, teachers did complete reports about individual children in their classrooms, as has been done in prior rounds of FACES. This report explores whether teacher reports of children's approaches to learning and literacy skills offer a reliable, valid, and nonbiased way to measure aspects of children's early learning skills as a proxy for the skills measured in the direct child assessment. Overall, teacher-reported approaches to learning and literacy skills have strong measurement properties among Head Start children. Therefore, these teacher reports could be used as outcome measures in analyses using FACES data when the direct child assessment is not available, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We present cosmological constraints from a gravitational lensing mass map covering 9400 sq. deg. reconstructed from CMB measurements made by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) from 2017 to 2021. In combination with BAO measurements (from SDSS and 6dF), we obtain the amplitude of matter fluctuations $\sigma_8 = 0.819 \pm 0.015$ at 1.8% precision, $S_8\equiv\sigma_8({\Omega_{\rm m}}/0.3)^{0.5}=0.840\pm0.028$ and the Hubble constant $H_0= (68.3 \pm 1.1)\, \text{km}\,\text{s}^{-1}\,\text{Mpc}^{-1}$ at 1.6% precision. A joint constraint with CMB lensing measured by the Planck satellite yields even more precise values: $\sigma_8 = 0.812 \pm 0.013$, $S_8\equiv\sigma_8({\Omega_{\rm m}}/0.3)^{0.5}=0.831\pm0.023$ and $H_0= (68.1 \pm 1.0)\, \text{km}\,\text{s}^{-1}\,\text{Mpc}^{-1}$. These measurements agree well with $\Lambda$CDM-model extrapolations from the CMB anisotropies measured by Planck. To compare these constraints to those from the KiDS, DES, and HSC galaxy surveys, we revisit those data sets with a uniform set of assumptions, and find $S_8$ from all three surveys are lower than that from ACT+Planck lensing by varying levels ranging from 1.7-2.1$\sigma$. These results motivate further measurements and comparison, not just between the CMB anisotropies and galaxy lensing, but also between CMB lensing probing $z\sim 0.5-5$ on mostly-linear scales and galaxy lensing at $z\sim 0.5$ on smaller scales. We combine our CMB lensing measurements with CMB anisotropies to constrain extensions of $\Lambda$CDM, limiting the sum of the neutrino masses to $\sum m_{\nu} < 0.13$ eV (95% c.l.), for example. Our results provide independent confirmation that the universe is spatially flat, conforms with general relativity, and is described remarkably well by the $\Lambda$CDM model, while paving a promising path for neutrino physics with gravitational lensing from upcoming ground-based CMB surveys., Comment: 32 pages, 17 figures, replaced with version accepted in ApJ (Feb 2024). We present new measurements of cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing over $9400$ sq. deg. of the sky. These lensing measurements are derived from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) Data Release 6 (DR6) CMB dataset, which consists of five seasons of ACT CMB temperature and polarization observations. We determine the amplitude of the CMB lensing power spectrum at $2.3\%$ precision ($43\sigma$ significance) using a novel pipeline that minimizes sensitivity to foregrounds and to noise properties. To ensure our results are robust, we analyze an extensive set of null tests, consistency tests, and systematic error estimates and employ a blinded analysis framework. The baseline spectrum is well fit by a lensing amplitude of $A_{\mathrm{lens}}=1.013\pm0.023$ relative to the Planck 2018 CMB power spectra best-fit $\Lambda$CDM model and $A_{\mathrm{lens}}=1.005\pm0.023$ relative to the $\text{ACT DR4} + \text{WMAP}$ best-fit model. From our lensing power spectrum measurement, we derive constraints on the parameter combination $S^{\mathrm{CMBL}}_8 \equiv \sigma_8 \left({\Omega_m}/{0.3}\right)^{0.25}$ of $S^{\mathrm{CMBL}}_8= 0.818\pm0.022$ from ACT DR6 CMB lensing alone and $S^{\mathrm{CMBL}}_8= 0.813\pm0.018$ when combining ACT DR6 and Planck NPIPE CMB lensing power spectra. These results are in excellent agreement with $\Lambda$CDM model constraints from Planck or $\text{ACT DR4} + \text{WMAP}$ CMB power spectrum measurements. Our lensing measurements from redshifts $z\sim0.5$--$5$ are thus fully consistent with $\Lambda$CDM structure growth predictions based on CMB anisotropies probing primarily $z\sim1100$. One of the new developments in chit-chat bots is a long-term memory mechanism that remembers information from past conversations for increasing engagement and consistency of responses. The bot is designed to extract knowledge of personal nature from their conversation partner, e.g., stating preference for a particular color. In this paper, we show that this memory mechanism can result in unintended behavior. In particular, we found that one can combine a personal statement with an informative statement that would lead the bot to remember the informative statement alongside personal knowledge in its long term memory. This means that the bot can be tricked into remembering misinformation which it would regurgitate as statements of fact when recalling information relevant to the topic of conversation. We demonstrate this vulnerability on the BlenderBot 2 framework implemented on the ParlAI platform and provide examples on the more recent and significantly larger BlenderBot 3 model. We generate 150 examples of misinformation, of which 114 (76%) were remembered by BlenderBot 2 when combined with a personal statement. We further assessed the risk of this misinformation being recalled after intervening innocuous conversation and in response to multiple questions relevant to the injected memory. Our evaluation was performed on both the memory-only and the combination of memory and internet search modes of BlenderBot 2. From the combinations of these variables, we generated 12,890 conversations and analyzed recalled misinformation in the responses. We found that when the chat bot is questioned on the misinformation topic, it was 328% more likely to respond with the misinformation as fact when the misinformation was in the long-term memory., Comment: To be published in 21st International Conference on Applied Cryptography and Network Security, ACNS 2023

This paper develops a high-density air corridor traffic flow model for Uncrewed Aircraft System (UAS) operation in urban low altitude airspace. To maximize throughput with safe separation guarantees, we define an airspace spatiotemporal planning problem. For the spatial planning, we propose a multi-floor UAS coordination structure divided into a finite number of air corridors safely wrapping buildings and obstacles. We use the USGS Lidar data to map buildings and in turn generate air corridors by modeling UAS coordination as ideal fluid flow with the streamlines obtained by solving the Laplace partial differential equation (PDE). Proper boundary conditions for the differential equations are imposed to direct air corridors along the floors desired motion direction. For temporal planning, we use 4-dimensional path-finding through the corridor network with A* search to maximize airspace usability given each UAS initial and destination waypoint pair.

Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) are being increasingly adopted for various applications. The risk UAS poses to people and property must be kept to acceptable levels. This paper proposes risk-aware contingency management autonomy to prevent an accident in the event of component malfunction, specifically propulsion unit failure and/or battery degradation. The proposed autonomy is modeled as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) whose solution is a contingency management policy that appropriately executes emergency landing, flight termination or continuation of planned flight actions. Motivated by the potential for errors in fault/failure indicators, partial observability of the MDP state space is investigated. The performance of optimal policies is analyzed over varying observability conditions in a high-fidelity simulator. Results indicate that both partially observable MDP (POMDP) and maximum a posteriori MDP policies performed similarly over different state observability criteria, given the nearly deterministic state transition model.

The increasing statistical power of cosmic microwave background (CMB) datasets requires a commensurate effort in understanding their noise properties. The noise in maps from ground-based instruments is dominated by large-scale correlations, which poses a modeling challenge. This paper develops novel models of the complex noise covariance structure in the Atacama Cosmology Telescope Data Release 6 (ACT DR6) maps. We first enumerate the noise properties that arise from the combination of the atmosphere and the ACT scan strategy. We then prescribe a class of Gaussian, map-based noise models, including a new wavelet-based approach that uses directional wavelet kernels for modeling correlated instrumental noise. The models are empirical, whose only inputs are a small number of independent realizations of the same region of sky. We evaluate the performance of these models against the ACT DR6 data by drawing ensembles of noise realizations. Applying these simulations to the ACT DR6 power spectrum pipeline reveals a $\sim 20\%$ excess in the covariance matrix diagonal when compared to an analytic expression that assumes noise properties are uniquely described by their power spectrum. Characterizing critical current IC of Nb3Sn strands as function of a strain is very important for large high field superconducting magnet applications such as the superconducting outsert coil of the series-connected hybrid at the NHMFL and the ITER magnets. Apparatuses for measuring IC versus longitudinal strain and transverse stress have been developed and used at the NHMFL. We have characterized the IC strain sensitivities of a few candidate strands for the series-connected-hybrid. In addition, IC irreversibility strains are measured for the recently developed ITER high JC strands. The Head Start Family and Child Experiences Survey (FACES) and the American Indian and Alaska Native Head Start Family and Child Experiences Survey (AIAN FACES) are separate studies done successively over time. One goal for these studies is to provide a national picture of children's readiness for school. In this research brief, the authors use data from the most recent round of FACES and AIAN FACES in fall 2019 to evaluate the performance of direct assessments of children that were used to provide that national picture. The authors conducted similar analyses using FACES 2014 and AIAN FACES 2015 data (Malone et al. 2018) and are replicating the previous analyses because the current FACES studies have new direct assessments--one added to measure executive function and three reflecting the latest editions of those direct assessments. The current analysis focuses on these new direct assessments to understand whether they are a fair estimate of children's skills and knowledge in the domains being measured. Specifically, the authors answer two key research questions: (1) How valid is the Minnesota Executive Function Scale App (MEFS App™) as an assessment of executive function for Head Start preschool children? and (2) Do the latest editions of the cognitive assessments used in AIAN FACES 2019 show any systematic item bias against AIAN preschool children compared with White, non-Hispanic children in FACES 2019?

This work presents a number of techniques to improve the ability to create magnetic field maps on a UAV which can be used to quickly and reliably gather magnetic field observations at multiple altitudes in a workspace. Unfortunately, the electronics on the UAV can introduce their own magnetic fields, distorting the resultant magnetic field map. We show methods of reducing and working with UAV-induced noise to better enable magnetic fields as a sensing modality for indoor navigation. First, some gains in our flight controller create high-frequency motor commands that introduce large noise in the measured magnetic field. Next, we implement a common noise reduction method of distancing the magnetometer from other components on our UAV. Finally, we introduce what we call a compromise GPR (Gaussian process regression) map that can be trained on multiple flight tests to learn any flight-by-flight variations between UAV observation tests. We investigate the spatial density of observations used to train a GPR map then use the compromise map to define a consistency test that can indicate whether or not the magnetometer data and corresponding GPR map are appropriate to use for state estimation. The interventions we introduce in this work facilitate indoor position localization of a UAV whose estimates we found to be quite sensitive to noise generated by the UAV.

Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) vehicles will open new opportunities in aviation. This paper describes the design and wind tunnel analysis of an eVTOL uncrewed aircraft system (UAS) prototype with a traditional aircraft wing, tail, and puller motor along with four vertical thrust pusher motors. Vehicle design and construction are summarized. Dynamic thrust from propulsion modules is experimentally determined at different airspeeds over a large sweep of propeller angles of attack. Wind tunnel tests with the vehicle prototype cover a suite of hover, transition and cruise flight conditions. Net aerodynamic forces and moments are distinctly computed and compared for plane, quadrotor and hybrid flight modes. Coefficient-based models are developed. Polynomial curve fits accurately capture observed data over all test configurations. To our knowledge, the presented wind tunnel experimental analysis for a multi-mode eVTOL platform is novel. Children's early interactions with adults during the first three years of life are instrumental in the development of their language, cognitive, and social skills, which in turn are strongly related to later achievement and success into adolescence. Early childhood professionals working with infants and toddlers need to understand children's capacity to learn and how to promote young children's development and learning. Prior research about how professional development (PD) can change teacher beliefs, knowledge, and practices has mostly focused on preschool and school-age children. Those caring for infants and toddlers often have less access to and fewer opportunities for sustained and systematic PD. The first few years of a child's life are especially important in brain development. Thus, there is a clear need to examine the potential benefits of different forms of PD specifically for caregivers serving infants and toddlers. The goal of this brief is to describe differences in beliefs, knowledge, and practices of infant and toddler caregivers from fall 2018 to spring 2019--before and after implementation of the We Grow Together (WGT) PD system.
