We have carried out a detailed analysis of the IUE archival high resolution spectra of the classical nova V1974 Cyg 1992. In addition to the P Cygni and emission lines, two shortward shifted absorption systems are present. Evidence is given that these absorptions originate in two separate expanding shells, outside the wind layers where the emission lines are formed. The outer main shell, containing most of the matter ejected at outburst, produces the so-called ``principal absorption line system'', and the inner faster moving second shell produces the so-called ``diffuse--enhanced absorption line system''. The outflow velocity of the two shells increases exponentially with time reaching a value of about 1750 km/s and 2900 km/s, respectively. We suggest that the acceleration of the shells is the result of increasing line-radiation pressure due to the UV-brightening of the star as the effective radius decreases. Around day 60 the second shell has overtaken the slower moving principal system shell, and merged with it. This explains: the sudden disappearance of the diffuse line system near that date, the upward jump of 240 km/s in velocity of the principal system and the first detection of hard X-ray emission on day 63. This velocity jump indicates that the main shell is about 4 times more massive than the second shell. The deceleration suffered by the diffuse-enhanced system after the shock provides a shock temperature of about 1.6 KeV, in fairly good agreement with the temperature of the observed hard X-ray emission., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures

We carry out an analysis of the Mg II 2796.34 A emission line in RS CVn stars and make a comparison with the normal stars studied in a previous paper (Paper I). The sample of RS CVn stars consists of 34 objects with known HIPPARCOS parallaxes and observed at high resolution with IUE. We confirm that RS CVn stars tend to possess wider Mg II lines than normal stars having the same absolute visual magnitude. However, we could not find any correlation between the logarithmic line width log Wo and the absolute visual magnitude Mv (the Wilson--Bappu relationship) for these active stars, contrary to the case of normal stars addressed in Paper I. On the contrary, we find that a strong correlation exists in the (Mv, log L) plane (L is the absolute flux in the line). In this plane, normal and RS CVn stars are distributed along two nearly parallel straight lines with RS CVn stars being systematically brighter by about 1 dex. Such a diagram provides an interesting tool to discriminate active from normal stars. We finally analyse the distribution of RS CVn and of normal stars in the (log L, log Wo) plane, and find a strong linear correlation for normal stars, which can be used for distance determinations., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, latex, to be published in A&A

An investigation is carried out on the Wilson-Bappu effect in the Mg II k line at 2796.34 A. The work is based on a selection of 230 stars observed by both the IUE and HIPPARCOS satellites, covering a wide range of spectral type and absolute visual magnitudes. The Wilson-Bappu relationship here provided is considered to represent an improvement over previous recent results for the considerably larger data sample used as well as for a proper consideration of the measurement errors. This paper discusses the overall quality of IUE high resolution data processed with the NEWSIPS software in terms of flux and wavelength accuracy. It also describes the processing of NEWSIPS high resolution spectra within the framework of the ESA ``IUE Newly Extracted Spectra'' (INES) System. This system provides the IUE high resolution data in two formats: the high resolution ``concatenated'' spectra, in which the spectral orders are connected, eliminating the overlap regions through a procedure designed to optimize the signal-to-noise ratio at the edges of the orders, and the ``rebinned'' spectra, i.e. the high resolution concatenated spectra resampled into the low resolution wavelength domain. Our study reveals the existence of a significant discrepancy in the wavelength scales of short and long wavelength NEWSIPS high resolution spectra. The INES processing applies a correction of +17.7 km/s to the wavelength scale of the high resolution SWP spectra in order to provide an internally consistent velocity scale. Similarly, suitable corrections have been applied to long wavelength small aperture spectra. In this paper we document the results of the study which led to the ripple correction and absolute calibration algorithms applied to the high resolution spectra processed with the NEWSIPS software for the Final Archive of the IUE Project. In this analysis, based on a very large number of spectra, we find that both K and the alpha parameters (not only the former as previously believed) vary with order number. This fact, together with the finding that the central peaks of the blaze function vary also as a function of the THDA temperature (for the SWP camera) and of the date of observations (for the LWP and LWR cameras), makes the ripple correction algorithm more complex than previously considered but, at the same time, considerably more reliable. As for the high resolution absolute calibration, the method followed is similar to the one implemented in IUESIPS. The internal accuracy of the high resolution calibration is about 4%. We note that the ripple correction and absolute calibration algorithms here described apply also to IUE data processed and distributed with the INES system., Comment: 11 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in A&A Supplement Series

We present the results of an extensive campaign of coordinated X-ray (ROSAT) and UV (IUE) observations of the symbiotic star AG Dra during a long period of quiescence (1990-1993) followed by two optical outbursts in 1994 and 1995. The hot component (i.e. X-ray emitting compact object) turns out to be very luminous during the quiescent phase: (9.5+/-1.5)*10^36 (D/2.5 kpc)^2 erg/s. This suggests that the compact object is burning hydrogen-rich matter on its surface even in the quiescent (as defined optically) state at a rate of (3.2+/-0.5)*10^-8 (D/2.5 kpc)^2 M_sun/yr. Assuming a steady state, i.e. burning at precisely the accretion supply rate, this high rate suggests a Roche lobe filling cool companion though Bondi-Hoyle accretion from the companion wind cannot be excluded. We have discovered a remarkable decrease of the X-ray flux during both optical maxima. In the UV these events were characterized by a large increase of the emission line and continuum fluxes. The anticorrelation of X-ray/UV flux and optical brightness evolution is very likely due to a temperature decrease of the hot component which could be the result of an increased mass transfer to the burning compact object, causing it to slowly expand to about twice its original size during each optical outburst., Comment: accepted for publ. in A&A, 17 pages incl. 5 Figs

The recent 1994-1995 active phase of AG Draconis has given us for the first time the opportunity to follow the full X-ray behaviour of a symbiotic star during two successive outbursts and to compare with its quiescence X-ray emission. With \ros observations we have discovered a remarkable decrease of the X-ray flux during both optical maxima, followed by a gradual recovering to the pre-outburst flux. In the UV the events were characterized by a large increase of the emission line and continuum fluxes, comparable to the behaviour of AG Dra during the 1980-81 active phase. The anticorrelation of X-ray/UV flux and optical brightness evolution is shown to very likely be due to a temperature decrease of the hot component. High and low resolution spectra of AG Dra taken in 1981 are analyzed. The UV spectrum of AG Dra is characterized by prominent high ionization emission lines superimposed on a strong continuum. At high resolution, several intense absorption lines of interstellar origin are seen, in spite of the low interstellar extinction. A similar situation is displayed by the high galactic latitude sd0 stars. The radial velocity difference between the emission lines and the i.s. lines is about -105 Km/sec in agreement with the optical observations. The He II 1640 A line appears much stronger than in other symbiotic stars and suggests the presence of a hot source which is variable according to the activity of the star. The line also exhibits broad emission wings which could be formed in a rotating disk. The NV resonance doublet displays a P Cygni profile and is probably formed in a warm wind. Two components in the UV continuum are identified: a steep component dominating the far UV probably associated with the hot source, and a flatter continuum in the near UV which cannot be accounted for by f-f and f-b emission alone, but which is probably emitted by an optically thick region or disk.
